2021: Florida Road Trip - Crafty Crab and Sand on the Beach
After spending two days at Disney World my son and I travelled south to the Palm Bay, Florida area where he lives. There are several scrapbook spreads that will follow that share the other adventures that we had during this week. This spread showcases photographs from two restaurants that we really enjoy in the area – Sand on the Beach and Crafty Crab Seafood. I chose an orange and yellow theme…

Which of the TR guys would enjoy a seafood boil/get mad at their girl for getting crab legs without them ?
Oh interesting one! Ok as usual these were the first 6 that came to mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mikey- Ok is anyone really surprised about this one? Mikey loves food and he loves you so of course he's gonna pout when he finds out you went without him. Probably demands you to go out all over again and don't worry if you're too full then he'll just eat enough for the both of you (only if a flag is involved though).
Kazutora- Honestly the seafood isn't the most important thing to him here, he's just disappointed you ate without him. After having to eat alone for years as a child and then as a teen in juvie he really values meals with you. Will need plenty of affection to make him feel better.
Koko- He's a big eater, it's his special skill so he clearly enjoys a good meal. Frowns when he found out you went somewhere to eat without him, he wants the seafood too and especially if it's with you. Stops frowning when he realises you brought some back with you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wakasa- His hobby is fishing so he gets a bit disappointed that you didn't ask him to catch and cook something for you (ok he's never actually cooked before but hey he could figure it out for you). He just wants a chance to share his interest with you. (Also he's clingy in the character book so of course he wants to spend plenty of time with you).
Smiley- He has an interest in cooking (particularly ramen) and part of that involves wanting to go to different restaurants to enjoy different meals. His smile drops for a second when you mention it before he playfully threatens to "take you down" (tickle you). You quickly promise to take him next time.
Rindou- Likes to eat healthy and seafood is a good source of protein as well as various vitamins. So he's a little pouty that you didn't invite him, wants to know why you didn't ask him but won't ask outright so tries to hint towards it. Just wants to make sure you still like going out to eat with him.

I'm only in Macau for one night, and to be honest it's not popular for visa runs because there's no budget accommodation. I came here for the day when I was living in China in 2017, and went back in the early evening for this very reason. As such, I had never seen Macau properly in the dark (the quest for McDonald's with the Taiwanese kid at 3 am in October doesn't count), and was very curious. Man, it is shiny.
I took the public bus from the airport because the fare was 6 MOP and I had exactly 6 HKD in coinage lurking in my closet from previous voyages (they're interchangeable in Macau). My fellow bus-riders did not appear to be tourists. I took the risk of trusting google maps regarding the bus route, and only felt betrayed for a moment before I realised it was making a detour because of construction, and still headed in the general correct direction, even if it took a bridge that didn't seem to exist on the map yet. Spellbound by the glittering lights and the thrill of being somewhere new, I was finally enjoying myself (having been anxious for days previous already).
Between my hotel and the bus stop was more neon signage than you could shake a stick at, I was enthralled. Check in went smoothly, and I hastened back out to walk around and take pictures. The old city side of Macau was quite hopping considering it was nearly 10 pm on a Tuesday night and cold out, Taipei feels a bit sleepy in comparison (or maybe I'm not going to the right places). I had very sensibly looked up a bunch of restaurants in advance in an attempt to divert for once my usual fate of walking around forever and not eating (although I had brought a lot of bananas with me to the airport after realising they weren't going to survive a week at home, so at least I wasn't running totally on empty). As usual, even the best laid plans can go awry when there are too many things to look at (by things I mean giant crabs in the window of the seafood restaurant). Somewhere around 22:30 I realised I needed to consume something before bed.
The go-to late-night food in Macau appears to be...beef offal. Now, I'm not opposed to offal, I like some grilled intestines at the izakaya, but this was a boiled affair and there were an intimidating amount of bits on display at the kiosks. Afraid I was running out of options before reaching my hotel again, I stopped at a takeaway stand that had a picture of a 煎餅 (fried pancake wrap thing) and inquired with the guy as to whether it could be obtained. (All the signage and menu was in Chinese, so I had started with Mandarin from the get-go.) There was no 煎餅 to be had. I could, however, have a box of rice accompanied by...[here we had many of those silver trays in a bain-marie, filled with various soupy things]. I asked him what one was. He told me "Lú lòu". I was baffled and told him I didn't understand. He said it again as if I'd misheard him. No, I really don't know what that is, I insisted. He said it again more loudly as if I were daft. Finally I remembered that [n] often becomes [l] for Cantonese speakers and he was saying niú roù 牛肉...beef 😑 Well then. I asked if he had any vegetables, which appeared to be an offensive request, so I resigned myself to 50 HKD of rice and meat chunks. Shortly after I discovered if I'd just kept walking, there were plenty of other options, but either way, I had dinner. When life gives you meat chunks...you start chewing.
Tomorrow my return flight is not til 4, which means I should mosey to the airport a bit prior to 2, so if I go to bed within the next 15 minutes I might make it for breakfast and some more trotting around looking at things (an activity that was cut short in 2017 on account of it being mid-summer and the heat rendering me somewhat delirious). These days going places often feels like a heinous exertion while in the planning stages, but once I'm out there I start getting into the spirit of it. Enrichment. Outside of my enclosure, even!

Top 5 Meals you have ever had. Either the food, the company, the experience or any mix of those things.
It’s going to be hard to limit this to just five — and it’s gonna get long — but here goes . . .
1) Best meal of my life was at a Moroccan restaurant in Paris the year before the pandemic. (I recommended it recently to one of you, but the name is escaping me at the moment.) It was a dark, cozy little place with gorgeous tile work. I had a black cherry pigeon tajine — my first time eating pigeon — that was SO good. We shared a bottle of the most delicious wine that, sadly, they don’t sell here. We asked the owner to pick out a dessert for us to share, and she brought out a plate of something we didn’t get the name of at the time, but I’ve since googled it and I think it was Ktefa. It was somehow both rich and light. The pastry stayed crisp under the cream/custard, which had a delicate hint of both orange and what you’d probably think of as Christmassy spices. We were SO full by the time we left. But I think about that meal every few months, it was so good.
2) Thanksgivings with my mother’s extended family, which we call “Chrisgiving” because we celebrate Christmas together at the same time. My mother is the eldest of 6 and all of her siblings have between 2 and 4 kids, most of whom have their own spouses and kids as well, so it’s a HUGE group. Very loud. It’s buffet style, with the food filling at least three of those long fold-out tables you can always find in church basements. Almost all of it made from scratch. The food is always good, but obviously this one is more about the company/atmosphere.
3) When Adelaide was still in Montessori, one of her friends’ mothers was from Argentina and we were invited to an empanada-making party. It was supposed to be for the kids, but they were maybe kindergartners, so they were into it for about ten minutes before wanting to run around outside. So it became about the moms all standing around in the kitchen peeling hard boiled eggs and learning to stuff and crimp empanada skins. One from Argentina, one from Russia, one from Bosnia, one from the MidWest, and me. We talked about work and kids and dating/spouses and now I can make (the Argentinian version of) empanadas.
4) Trattoria Al Gatto Nero in Burano, Italy. We’d spent the morning at a glass factory in Murano and the tour guide knew we were heading to Burano, so she got us a water taxi and told us we HAD to have lunch in this place. It’s a Michelin star restaurant and mostly specializes in seafood (no surprise, considering we’re talking about an island). I had these delicate little crab claws that were SO fresh and perfectly seasoned. We sat outside by a canal and rows of brightly painted houses/shops with church bells ringing from the square nearby. It was drizzly and a little cold, so the waiter brought blankets out to wrap around all of our shoulders. It was just a lovely experience from start to finish.
5) I think I’ve told this story here before, so forgive me if a second telling seems like bragging. I dated a very successful lawyer in DC for a hot minute who had a real Alpha Business Guy vibe and looked a bit like a much taller Bruce Willis. He’d taken me to a romantic restaurant in Baltimore, where we’d had a great meal and were enjoying some wine. I was feeling slightly tipsy from mine and thoroughly enjoying his company, so in the middle of his work anecdote I gave him The Look. (You know what look I mean.) And this incredibly powerful, intimidating man actually blushed and got momentarily shy. That was such a heady experience, especially because it wasn’t long after my divorce and I was deep in rejection AND mommy mode and not at all confident in my desirability. One of the biggest power trips of my life.

something that makes mooch feel even more guilty about being with kj is that she’ll keep comparing him to tyler. kj brings her roses (and tyler always knew to bring daisies), kj brought her sushi rolls with avocados in it (but tyler knew she hated the texture), kj tried to take her to a seafood restaurant (and tyler knew she was allergic to crab), etc. she just keeps drawing comparisons, and it makes her feel terrible because she ended things with tyler, so she should be moving on… right? but she wasn’t good enough for him, and now she feels like she’s not good enough for kj. so i feel like all of the instances like that boil over, and mooch just breaks down and kj is finally like “maybe she’s not ready” and just has to console her that she is good enough, for him and for tyler, but she’s still tyler’s in her heart, and she probably always will be.
-🫂
the guilt literally makes her sick. she finds herself wanting to throw up every time she compares them. she feels like the shittiest person ever.

Food question!
If someone made birthday meals for everyone on their special day, what would they want to eat + desserts?
What's your favorite food and dessert?
Mori really likes Mexican food, right now he's a huge birria tacos slut so a big plate of that would probably be a first request. He doesn't have the biggest sweet tooth in the world but he's weak to a good brownie and will steal all the edge pieces. This will put him into a food coma.
Amir is SUPER into trying new foods and honestly he'd probably request to eat YOUR favorite food for the experience. That being said if pressed he has a list of weird food he's dying to try to pick from (1am Denny's Moons Over My Hammy, the sloppiest cheeseburger fries and chocolate shake, texas style bbq, carolina style bbq, roll ice cream, chicago pizza, Tim Horton's, etc etc). His favorite dessert is actually something from his childhood- shocking since he didn't have a great one- but he loves rice pudding flavored with orange blossom and cardamom.
Akello is a seafood fiend and also grew up with a family very inclined to cook. His go to special occasion meal is probably shrimp or crab either grilled or done in a big pot-boil style with a metric ton of hot sauce. Bonus if you can get your hands on any of his family's homemade stuff. Akello lies about having a sweet tooth too, get him a big slice of cheesecake, he will destroy it.
Kazu will eat literally anything happily for the most part but his favorite food is steak. Specifically big, aged, high quality steak that he rarely treats himself to. A big fat aged ribeye or if you got the dollars Miyazaki Wagyu will make a lasting impression. He doesn't have a super strong sweet tooth but a big ass parfait with lots of fruit is impossible for him not to enjoy. He esp likes strawberry and kiwi.
Raath doesn't get birthdays enough to make the request but his favorite food is lamb, especially grilled or spit roasted and especially with a ton of lemon and flatbread to eat it with. You can tell he's enjoying it because he's too focused on eating to make his normal petty banter. His sheltered and kinda utilitarian upbringing leaves him less knowledgeable about desserts but he'd be surprisingly into lemon or orange sherbet.
Marcel wants to go out, for sure, instead of relegating you to cooking for him. He's not picky but tends to favor Experience restaurants instead of of going to favorite standbys. Korean barbecue has been a big hit with him lately so he'd probably want to get in on that. Also he loves sugar in general but a birthday demands birthday cake and he likes the basic kind you make with funfetti box mix absolutely best of all.
ALSO UH 👉👈 idk I'm not a picky eater and like almost everything. My birthday was actually last week and I requested ceviche from my absolute favorite shop. My partner and I ate it with tortilla chips, extra lime, and a really dark, thick hot sauce the shop's owner makes. Its so good and its nice not to have a hot heavy meal when its so balls hot out this time of year. As far as sweet stuff goes, I'm usually really partial to cheesecake but for a change of pace my partner got me a strawberry flavored birthday cake with chocolate frosting and it was super good.

Nine Mutuals I’d Like to Know Better
Tagged by @stormbeyondreality
To quote Nin:
Tumblr media
3 Ships
The DC Trinity. I will forever support Batman x Superman x Wonder Woman. ALWAYS.
Ralof and Hadvar. I just like it. A lot.
Stucky. Bucky Barnes and Steve Rodgers FUCKED. I will not elaborate.
First Ship
Probably Tasha and Tyrone from Backyardagains. That was my favorite show as a kid, and I saw their similar head shapes and went “yes. Head shape = love.”
Last Song
What Else Can I Do? (Isabella’s Villain Song) by Lydia the Bard. I love her Villain rewrites, and my favorite has to be Tale As Old as Time, or We Don’t Talk About Bruno. She’s an amazing singer and vocalist.
Currently Reading
I’m in between books right now (as in, I saw the notification at the exact moment I was about to open a new book). But the book I just finished was Electric Idol by Katee Robert, and the one I’m about to read is Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert.
I’m also reading Keeping Count by @nerevar-quote-and-star on Ao3 and Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe on WEBTOON
Last Film
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 2. I only watched to the halfway point then started doing stuff. I got bored, and Gale pisses me off a lot.
Currently Craving
Tea. Peppermint tea to be specific, with 1/2 cup of sugar and 3 drops of lemon juice. Food wise, a seafood bag boil from this one restaurant in the city, which has crab, shrimp, lobster, potatoes, and corn. And it’s really spicy🤤

Hi, happy WBW Bug! What are popular snacks to-go in your universe? Are they sweet or savoury? Maybe eating in rush is seen as a lack of manners?
Hello, happy WBW & Thanks for the ask!
I will use my wip The Mice Come Out at Night for this ask because I'm feeling Extra Spicy today. I decided to delve a bit into Morgana's background with a few Snacks one could find in his home state, Louisiana (but of course mileage may vary per Region).
Beignets
The little pocket-shaped fried treats typically dusted dumped in powdered sugar! Or cinnamon sugar! Or what have you! They smell/taste like funnel cakes and remind Morgana of his fun family trips to New Orleans. These are usually a sit-down-and-enjoy-your-time-eating treat!
Fried green tomatoes
They're really just as the name implies! There's also a movie that goes by the same name. Morgana has fond memories of eating these at his aunt's house, where she also grows the tomatoes!
Po-boys
Sandwiches made with that Thick sub bread! I suppose you could eat them anywhere because they're sandwiches. You can find them in restaurants and gas stations. They usually contain fried seafood + lettuce + tomatoes!
Bonus content:
Crawfish/crab boil
Not your typical "to-go" snack, but I stuck it on this list because I felt like it! Crawfish boils are typically used as a means of family get-togethers, tailgates (hehe pun), after school/church events, or what have you. It's like getting everyone together for a BBQ, but you boil shellfish and gossip about the neighbors down the street! You definitely Don't want to rush eating through this "snack" or you'll be the target of gossip for the next boil!
