Books read in 2024: The Whispering Muse by Laura Purcell
Rating: 5/5
Jenny is down on her luck when she receives a great deal from a lady called Mrs. Dyer. In exchange for money and other favors, she has to spy on an actress called Lilith while taking care of her makeup and wardrobe. The theatre is full with people that believe in superstitions and there is a mysterious clock said to whisper to someone who is in possession of it while tragedy follows.
This was one of the most engaging reads I experienced in a long time. The writing style made everything flow so naturally, the characters were interesting and the different mysteries kept me wanting to read a chapter immediately one after the other.
The book is divided into five acts and, even though I don't think it's necessary to have read the plays presented here, some knowledge about them is helpful in order to notice all the details. The author makes a good job at stating what the plays are about and their themes for the most part and someone that is familiar with them might even find the few repetitions annoying at times. The plays presented are Faust, Macbeth, The Duchess of Malfi, Antony and Cleopatra and Romeo and Juliet. The plot has strong connection to these plays.
The main themes presented are family, superstition, jealousy, revenge and fame while adressing the struggles for women in Victorian London. The three major female characters have really strong personalities and are interesting in their own way. Lilith intrigued me from the start, but Jenny ended up being the best for me because I liked to see her development when it comes to her initial judgements and the care for her family while learning to take care of herself too.
The ending went on for a little too long. Near the end I caught myself thinking "it isn't done yet?" but the finale made sense and it closed with a bang.
I only read two books by this author, this one and The Silent Companions, and so far this one is my favourite. I definitely want to read more of her works.

I’ve just started reading The Whispering Muse by Laura Purcell. So far it’s fantastical, atmospheric, and dark with lots of little nods to The Phantom of the Opera!
The leading actresses’s surname is Erikson and the play we’re introduced to us is Faust.

The Whispering Muse by Laura Purcell - ARC Review!
Today on my blog I have a review for #TheWhisperingMuse by Laura Purcell! A dark, atmospheric and wondrously gothic tale that deals in obsession, mythology and death! #BookReview
Be careful what you wish for… it may just come true.
At The Mercury Theatre in London’s West End, rumours are circulating of a curse.
It is said that the lead actress Lilith has made a pact with Melpomene, the tragic muse of Greek mythology, to become the greatest actress to ever grace the stage. Suspicious of Lilith, the jealous wife of the theatre owner sends dresser Jenny to spy on her, and…

I started reading Whisper Me a Love Song last year and it's been neat! I picked a pretty good time to jump in given that the anime has finally started after a little delay, and the main Shiho arc of the manga has concluded. To celebrate all that here's a little relationship chart I made for the series.
Technically Aki and Shiho's relationship needs updating but this is a pretty good overview of the main vibe the manga has had for a while

I keep thinking that King Laios is gonna have a real hard time, politically, with dwarves post canon. I think it's established that dwarves have the most beef with elves (though this might also apply to gnomes to a lesser extent, given Tansu's opinions) and I'm sure they would have their hackles raised over the continent chocked full of concentrated mana that suddenly appeared from the depths due to ancient magic right after the Canaries went in and fucked around.
Worse, the king's court magician is a half elf, and his royal advisor, once they get intel on him, will turn out to be some tallman elf pet straight from the elven capital. And their court was established with a live-in elven ambassador (Pattadol) from day one. Just like in the canon timeline, a bunch of completely innocent circumstances have converged to paint a horribly suspicious picture. The Golden Country folks are gonna have a hell of a time convincing the world that they're not an elven puppet-state. This is designed to give Kabru a chronic migraine.

You know, I was kinda robbed of a Halsin and Minthara surface enemies to tentative alliance under the player character arc, and that the two of them will likely never see fully eye to eye on anything, and primarily seem like complete opposites of one another, but fundamentally they are both born of tragedy and shaped by a robbery of agency and loss, and their similarities ghost begrudgingly in and out even as their differences scream the loudest - Son of the Sun and Daughter of Darkness and all that.
And they both think Baldur's Gate is the pits so they could have just been mad about that together.

" nightmares no longer wait for sleep. " a sigh drifted past his parted lips, brows narrowing slightly at his own words. his natural easy-going, chill demeanor was replaced by a broody one as he sat back on the couch, the back of his head resting against the cushion, eyes pointed towards the ceiling. if anything, he was exhausted and just needed some sleep. but, sleep was hard to come by with the amount of jobs he had been throwing himself into lately. " is this the bit where i grumble that i need a vacation or is that too much? " too normal.
@miidnighters liked for a small thing.
