Have you read/what are your thoughts on Jack Weatherford's books?

I have indeed read some of Weatherford’s work: Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World, and his Secret History of the Mongol Queens: How the Daughters of Genghis Khan rescued his Empire. He has another book which is something to do on on the Mongol Empire laid the foundation for modern religious tolerance, I believe, but I have never read it.

Before I go much further, I should state a few things. Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World was the first ‘serious’ book I ever read on the Mongol Empire. I had finished reading Conn Iggulden’s Conqueror series, which sparked my interest in the Chinggisid Empire: that I was able to, some time after, pick up a copy of Weatherford’s book is what fanned the flames of my passion for the topic. At the time, I can remember being so impressed by the depth of Weatherford’s description and his own passion in Mongol culture, and I do believe without it, there would be no The Jackmeister: Mongol History. Especially in my own earlier videos, before my skills as a researcher had developed alongside my access to sources, Weatherford’s influence can be seen. I think in a video I did on Chinggis Khan’s sons, I basically called them all failures, as per Weatherford’s depiction of them.

Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World was also a huge boon for Weatherford, as it sold magnificently. There is a good chance today if you go into your local bookstore for something on the Mongol Empire, you’ll find a copy of it there, 15 years since its first release. And online, a search for ‘books on the Mongols’ will likely turn it up in the top results. It’s been translated into multiple languages, has brought him honours and awards even in Mongolia. I think it can be created to some extent to assisting in the increase in westerners (i.e., average people, not researchers and historians) to view Chinggis Khan as something other than a blood crazed maniac. That Bodrov’s Mongol came out just a few years afterward contributed as well: before that, probably most North Americans exposure to Chinggis was Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. No disrespect to Al Leong, but it’s not the most accurate depiction.

Weatherford is a skilled writer, and a key to Modern World’s success is that it is a very readable work. The image he presents of Temujin’s flight to Burkhan Khaldun after Borte’s capture, and the choices he faced, I found a poignant image which has stuck with me. Weatherford’s background is as an Anthropologist, and that is apparent in the attention he gives to discussing Mongolian culture. Not an extensive description of steppe tribes and politics, he places Temujin into a cultural context recognizable to modern Mongolians, a focus on his human side, rather than that of the conqueror. Considering that his entire book is on the positive transformative aspects of the Mongol Empire, that shouldn’t be surprising.

Now, that’s a lot of words talking about the books and Weatherford and things about them. My own thoughts on them? Well…

As I have dug deeper into the works of specialists and primary sources, Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World has not aged well. Weatherford is a skilled writer and an anthropologist with a deep appreciation for Mongolian culture. But he is not a historian. And when you read it from an historian’s viewpoint, it is a deeply frustrating work. Because there are so many details and facts it gets wrong that it it very distracting. Opening to a random page while I write this, while discussing the opening of conflict between the Mongols and the Jin Dynasty, he writes:

“The unexpected death of the Golden Khan of the Jurched and the ascension of his young son to the throne in 1210 offered the Jurchen court an opportunity to assess Genghis Khan …” (page 82).

A few points just in this line: the Mongols called the Jin Emperor the Altan Khan, so literally the Golden Khan. Unusual to do so in a secondary source though, and rather annoying for a reader who may want something more specific, and to find out who the name of this particular monarch. Likewise, to call them the Jurched is unusual: the -ed is a plural ending in Mongolian which you will see on the end of tribal names. But the Jurchen weren’t Mongolian, and Weatherford’s section on them as a whole emphasis their tribal origins, which is a slight misdirection considering how sincizied they had become over the 12th and early 13th century. Not 100% sinicized, but more than one might expect reading just Weatherford’s work, and enough that the increasing adoption of Chinese culture and customs by the Jurchen Jin court brought friction with the military aspects and particularly those Jurchen who still remained in the homeland, in what we generally call Manchuria. However, the succession changes he described are completely false: from 1208 until 1213 the Jin Emperor was Wei Shao Wang, a man whose reign was so poor he was posthumously demoted from emperor to prince, but was probably similar age to Chinggis himself! He was succeeded by a cousin, the Emperor Xuanzong of Jin, who was again of similar age to Chinggis himself.

The Jin had plenty of difficulties with their emperors, but they never put a child upon the Dragon Throne (I think the third emperor, Xijing of Jin, may have been around 15 when he became Emperor? That was the youngest). This is just one example, but I could flip around the book and find many more (but I don’t want this response to be 20 pages long).

Weatherford is also frustrating in his relative lack of citing his information, especially particularly interesting claims. The importance of footnotes and endnotes in History, is so that others can see where you got your information from. Essentially, so we can see you’re not making it up, or misrepresenting them entirely. For example, on page 235 he says the Mongol conquests led to an increase in tools carpenters in Europe had access too, and that they built new cranes and other devices based off knowledge gained from routes opened by the Mongols. A very interesting point to raise, one I’d love to follow up on, but there is no hint to where this information comes from, or what evidence supports this statement, or if he is even accurately representing what someone said on this matter. Or when he makes those inaccurate statements, we can’t even follow up to see what it was that misled him in the first place.

Finally, while I agree with the general point of his thesis (the Mongol Empire transformed Eurasia) much of his support for this argument I find either unsupported, or just wrong. Page 233, he says literacy increased under the Mongol Empire, presenting Kublai Khan’s construction of a printing office in 1269 so government mandates can be disseminated, as support for this. That isn’t even evidence for increased literacy in China because of the Mongols, let alone the entire Asian continent. And does establishing a printing office offset the destruction of libraries, archives and deaths of learned people in the initial conquests? He presents the Mongol invasions to Europe as ending the Middle Ages, saying at one point.

“European Knighthood never recovered from the blow of losing nearly one hundred thousand soldiers in Hungary and Poland, what the Europeans mounted as the ‘the flower’ of their knighthood and aristocracy. Walled cities and heavily armoured knights were finished, and in the smoke and gunpowder of the Easter Season of 1241, the Mongol triumph portended the coming total destruction of European Feudalism and the Middle Ages.” (page 155)

This is ludicrous. Heavily armoured knights didn’t even end in Hungary, who suffered the worst of the 1241-1242 invasion, let alone in all of Europe. Saying that it portended the end of Feudalism is like saying the death of Augustus portended the end of the Roman Empire. Sure, one occurs before the other, but they’re only tangentially related. As shown in studies by Erik Fügedi, Hungarian castle building actually increased after the Mongol invasion, now largely in stone instead of wood and earthen walls. And of course, European armour making increased in complexity, as the Mongol invasion predated the famous full suits of plate European knights are famous for.

That is in general the problem with much of Weatherford’s evidence for the impact of the Mongol Empire. There is a huge amount of actual effects the Mongols had, both positive and negative. But Weatherford misses much of these in favour of flashier statements like the above. And by trying to prove this point so much, he ends up minimizing the lives lost in the first place: for some regions, that was the entire experience of the Mongols, and the only place they held in those local popular memories after the disintegration of the Khanates. From what I recall of The Secret History of the Mongol Queens, it had many similar problems. That is why I find Weatherford’s work so frustrating: because it ultimately cannot reach the lofty goals it sets for itself, miring the reader down in distracting, inaccurate representations and doing a disservice to a fascinating and important topic for world history.

It was supposed to be making an effort. At first desktop computers didn't look like much of a role as gatekeepers. You should be able to build everything they need. Though Balzac made a lot of i/o fast. And whatever its components, they're not even fun. That will tend to be very disciplined if you take the latter route that the lawyer is representing you rather than merely commenting on them has similar incentives. But even at the most successful startups are the exact opposite of this. Companies like Cisco are proud that everyone there has a cubicle, even the CEO. We are having a bit of a hack. This principle isn't only for big ideas. It seemed to me as if the test of a language is to be something you have to make a difference. For example, when Leonardo painted the portrait of Ginevra de Benci in the National Gallery, he put a juniper bush behind her head. The reason you've never heard of investors caring either. It's very dangerous to start worrying too early that you're default dead, start asking too early. You don't have to do licensing deals, or get shelf space in retail stores, or grovel to have your work tangled together with a lot of bandwidth. Q: What’s your sexual orientation?

A: I identify as gay.

Q: Which country are you from?

A: The United States - more specifically the southeast.

Q: Sometimes the level of detail and realism in the fic amazes me to no end. So I was wondering if you had taken inspiration on personal experiences or some real life people to write any scenes or describe some details?

A: Thank you! I have taken a few things from my own life – most of it being the more sexual stuff – but for the most part I’m just putting myself into the mindset of these characters and just writing as if I am them. I’m a very empathetic person, and it’s incredibly easy for me to put myself into ‘other people’s shoes’, so to speak. So because of that, I am able to write as if I am actually Nicole, or Waverly, or whoever is speaking in the moment. I do it for every single character in my story. It’s kind of fun, because it’s almost like acting! I will say that the only character I feel that’s a little different in my story than in the show is Dolls. I think in the show he’s a little more “to the point”, but in my story he’s a bit more easy going and laid back. That wasn’t a conscious decision, it just sort of happened that way. But I feel like if he wasn’t an agent that was trained to eradicate paranormal forces, he would be more laid back like that anyways, so it works out!

Q: Last movie you watched?

A: The Miseducation of Cameron Post, and it was VERY good. Chloë Grace Moretz’s acting in the film is incredible. It’s very realistic and eye-opening, and I definitely recommend buying/renting it and supporting the queer woman who wrote and directed it!

Q: What do you usually use to write your fanfictions?

A: I use Word on my laptop, and when I’m out and get a sudden burst of inspiration I’ll pull up the Notes app on my phone and start writing. The Notes app is great because it’s linked to my laptop as well, so when I get home I can just pull up the app on my computer and everything is there from my phone, so I just copy and paste it into my Word document! Technology is great.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you?

A: I wake up, take my wife to work, go to my job where I teach some kids how to play percussion instruments, come home to do something creative (writing, creating music, playing an instrument, etc.), pick my wife up from work, do something with her – usually either watching TV or playing a board game, go to sleep.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to write?

A: Most of the time, smut. Which is why there’s so much of it in my story! But I also really enjoy writing the humorous stuff as well.

Q: Favorite WayHaught kiss?

A: Their first one…it was a really good first kiss 😏

Q: Do you already have in mind other fics for the future?

A: Actually, I’m in the process of writing one right now! It’s a WayHaught high school alternate universe story in which Waverly is a cheerleader and Nicole is a basketball player who transfers to Purgatory High in the middle of sophomore year (10th grade). The story focuses on Waverly and Nicole figuring out who they are as young adults, discovering their sexuality, and exploring their bodies – as teenagers do. The goal is to make it as true as possible to being a teenager in 2019, for all of the teens out there that are stuck in high school and need something to relate to. I feel like a lot of the high school fics are a bit outdated, or don’t “go there” enough to touch on the “uncomfortable” or “taboo” topics. And you better believe that this fic will! I’m getting close to halfway through with it – about 10 chapters so far – and have been working on it for the past month. I will begin posting that when I’ve completed it, so be on the lookout! A: Pride! …does that even count as a holiday? If not, then I’ll say Christmas.

A: Something where we can converse pretty easily. Maybe dinner or walking around somewhere.

Q: Do you brainstorm chapters before you write them?

A: Sometimes I’ll have a layout. For example, this is the exact brainstorming layout I have written out in my notes app for the next chapter…

There’s a little sneak peek for you guys 😉 But other than that, all of the dialogue just kind of flows naturally. There have been a couple of chapters where I didn’t have a layout at all and just let the words flow out of my brain, but most of the time I have an idea of the main plots of the chapter.

Q: Waverly or Nicole?

A: I relate more to Nicole, but I find Waverly to be more attractive.

Q: Do you have any siblings?

A: I have a sister who is 3 ½ years older than I am.

Q: What color are your eyes?

A: Blue. And they’re very sensitive to sunlight. I spend most of my life squinting.

Q: Do you ever get writer’s block?

A: Yes! Quite often, actually. Which is why your survey answers in regard to “The Grind” have been so helpful! Also, those who comment on my fic with ideas of things they want to see help too. Any time I get writer’s block, I’ll either read some fics to draw inspiration from, or I’ll just start writing something that’s completely different, just to get the creative juices flowing. Often when I have writer’s block and aren’t sure where to take the story, I’ll just do a random smutty chapter for the week. A: If you’re asking which type of lesbian I am, chapstick. If you’re asking which one I prefer on my lips…chapstick.

Q: Favorite concert you’ve ever been to?

A: Blue Man Group! Although, I will say that I went to Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour back in August with my wife who is obsessed with her, and although I’m not crazy about her music, I’ll admit that the girl can perform. I thought I was going to hate it, but I actually really enjoyed it.

Q: Is there a specific place that you write?

A: Most of the time I just write at my house - either at the table or sometimes on the couch in my living room, but occasionally I like to go to the Barnes & Noble at the mall close to us and write there. My wife and I will go together and we’ll just sit at the same table – me writing and her reading a book – while we occasionally steal glances at each other and kick each other’s feet. It’s pretty great.

Q: What superpower would you choose and why?

A: Shapeshifting, because I genuinely want to know what it’s like to walk through life as other people, more specifically as a man 🤔

Q: Windows or Mac?

A: Mac. I have nothing against Windows, but everything I use is Apple and I’m used to it.

Q: What’s a fun fact about you?

A: I’m deaf in my right ear and wear a hearing aid, due to having had a lot of ear infections as a kid. Bonus round: I started wearing glasses at age of 2, but stopped needing them at 16 because my eye doctor said that my glasses corrected my vision and I didn’t need to wear them anymore, so now I’m glasses-free! 🤓 (<-- not me)

Q: Favorite lesbian YouTuber?

A: Rose and Rosie! They’re hilarious, and honestly remind me of my wife and myself.

Q: Describe yourself in three words.

A: Where’s my wallet? (Always using it, always losing it…)

Q: What was the #1 song on the radio the day you were born?

A: *searches song* Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-a-Lot 😂 Classic.

Q: What languages do you speak?

A: English and some Spanish. I can understand Spanish better than I can properly speak it. My wife is fluent in both, but her first language is Spanish, so I’m exposed to it often.

Q: Are you a DomKat fan?

A: I love them! I genuinely enjoy watching their interviews, including the ones with them as individuals (Just Dom or just Kat). I also enjoy listening to the podcasts they’ve been featured in, more specifically Tales Of The Black Badge. I don’t ship them as a couple like a lot of people think they secretly are, but I love their friendship. You can tell they genuinely enjoy each other’s company, which in turn shows through their WayHaught scenes on screen. I love both of them, but I’m a bigger fan of Dominique. She’s just so adorable!

Q: Do you have any celebrity crushes?

A: Dominique Provost-Chalkley 😍 But also, Emma Watson.

Q: What is your favorite season of Wynonna Earp?

A: I think season 2 is my favorite. I loved season 3, but I liked season 2 better. And season 1 was inevitably them trying to figure things out since they didn’t have any fans yet.

Q: What’s your least favorite thing about Wynonna Earp?

A: The violence. They’ve toned it down a bit, which is good, but it was a little too much in the first season, which made it kind of difficult for me to watch. I’m not a huge fan of violence 🙅🏻

Q: Do you have any other lesbian ships that you like?

A: Well, I’ve watched the supercuts of pretty much EVERY lesbian ship out there, but I am a big Hollstein (Laura and Carmilla) fan. Spashley (Spencer and Ashley) was the first teen lesbian ship I was exposed to, so that will obviously always hold a special place in my heart. I loved Sanvers (Alex and Maggie), but since it ended I kind of lost interest in that ship. Big Calzona (Callie and Arizona) fan, and am super sad they’re no longer on the show. And I’m currently getting hooked on Avalance (Ava and Sara) now that we’ve just finished season 3 of Legends of Tomorrow. Basically, I’m very gay…

Q: Do you have any fanfic recommendations?

A: “From Afar” – Avrilsky. I know it’s popular, but I really enjoyed that one. Also, “How do I wrap my heart up for Christmas” by breezered is short, but sweet.

Emma Swan’s wedding gown: an astonishing failure by any metric

I hope that, as readers of this blog, you know that I have a great deal of respect for the work of Eduardo Castro on this show. It was with dismay that I began analyzing this dress last season, when friends began asking me to talk about it. I like talking about the successes—negative analysis can be fun and cathartic and all, but analyzing something that works, in order to understand why it’s really that good, is at least as valuable, if not more so. But sometimes, a thing is really that bad, and that’s where we are today. I hope everyone understands that this is a critique of this garment, not an analysis of the character.

But let me be very clear: this dress was poorly made, poorly fitted, and poorly suited to the medium.

Arguably the most famous wedding gown ever made is that of Grace Kelly, worn for the Catholic ceremony of her wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco (the pair had been married in a civil ceremony the day before). Kelly’s gown was designed by a costume designer from MGM Studios, Helen Rose. Rose was a two-time Oscar-winning designer and ten-time nominee. She had designed costumes for Kelly several times, and she was also a well-regarded wedding gown designer.

This gown is without question her most famous work, and its influence has been far-reaching. Fifty-five years later, a dress inspired by Kelly’s was worn by Kate Middleton for her wedding to Prince William. Several European princesses of the same generation have also drawn inspiration from this gown.

Emma Swan’s wedding gown, however, does not draw inspiration from Kelly’s. It is a copy, and not even a good one.

Let’s start from the top.

The Juliet cap

It’s easy to underestimate just how ubiquitous hats were in American fashion at one time. Hats were a standard accessory both for men and women. In the 1950s, many women’s hats were far more decorative than functional, like the Juliet cap.

The Juliet cap has its roots in Renaissance Europe, when earlier traditions of women completely covering their hair had evolved into pieces that partially covered the head and accentuated hairstyling. This was true of the 50s version as well. The chignon was a popular hairstyle to pair with a Juliet cap. The Renaissance versions were often a net (beaded or plain) that held hair in place; by the 50s it was most likely to be a solid hat. Today the Juliet cap is strictly bridal, usually more like the earliest versions than the 20th-century ones.

Arguably it was the cap which doomed this costume. This piece, more than any other part, pegs this as a vintage design. The dress itself has had innumerable imitators over the last sixty years. The Juliet cap has not achieved that staying power. In Emma’s case, the cap goes awry on a few counts. First, the lace itself lacks the delicacy of the original. It’s coarser and lacks most of the tiny beads. Second, it’s way too big for her head. It touches her ear, while the original was about half an inch above. Third, the placement of the flower band makes it look like it’s sliding off the back of her head.

The final nail in the coffin is the actual outline of the piece. It’s hard to tell if they actually failed to copy the original accurately or if that original shape just doesn’t work well with JMo’s hairline. Either is possible.

If they had just given her a tiara, or braided her hair into a crown with flowers—well, I’d still be talking about how bad this dress is, but I bet a lot of other people wouldn’t have fixated on it and I’d just be stewing about it privately instead of writing a 3,000-word post about it.

Styling

I’m no hair-and-makeup expert, but to my eye this is all too severe. A softer lip color would have gone a long way toward helping this. The hairstyle may look really pretty in the back but we’ll never know because it’s covered up with a veil. I’m honestly a little surprised they stuck a veil on her at all, but we’ll get to that later. Anyway, what we can see of the hair is all repressed-librarian-chic and that is so not the intent of this look. At least I’m pretty sure. It’s also worth noting that while Kelly wore her hair up, she still had more volume to her hair than Emma does here.

Quality

There are some weird and frankly unprofessional quality problems with this costume.

The first and most noticeable problem is the seams of the lace jacket. I’ll be blunt: lace can be hard to work with. We’ve seen lace on costumes on Once before, but it’s often been handled using a technique called underlining. With underlining you layer two pieces of fabric together and treat them as though they’re one piece. For example, Snow’s white dress from 1.11 has lace on the bodice that was constructed this way. A major reason for underlining when you can is that it hides all the raw edges inside the garment.

However, when a garment is just lace, like this jacket, the preferred method is to hide the seams with the lace itself. This is done by cutting pieces larger than needed, following the motifs of the lace pattern. Then the irregular edge is appliquéd over the seam line, effectively hiding it. Kelly’s jacket is so well constructed that seams are virtually invisible.

I have to give some credit to the wardrobe folks, because they did actually use this appliqué technique on this jacket (which, when I first saw low-resolution images, I thought they did not). However, the motifs on this lace are so sparse that it doesn’t do a very good job of hiding the seams. And then, for reasons I suspect I will never understand, they decided to bind the seams. They took a white fabric and covered up the raw edges of the lace, so instead of masking the seams, they made them more obvious.

The thing is, those princess seams on the front are very unusual. Most princess seams are perpendicular to the waist and either run to the armhole or the shoulder seam, rather than creating that odd diamond shape. So the shape is odd and the seams are super-visible, and it starts calling attention to how it’s made. Those seams were in fact the first thing I noticed when I saw this dress, and I stand by what I said at the time: those seams are visible from space.

The seams on the sleeves are even more perplexing. At least the rest of the seams were all trimmed down, but the seam allowances on these are so wide. It’s like somebody forgot to trim and bind those seams or ran out of time. In some shots it appears that the side seams were treated similarly. This is just not standard practice, even if you discount the admittedly time-consuming process of hiding seams in lace. Standard practice is that whatever method you use to finish seam allowances—serging, French seams, flat-felled seams, Hong Kong finish, no finish at all—you use it for all seams in the garment. Especially when the seam allowances are visible from the right side.

Then there’s the buttoned opening of the jacket. Someone tried really hard to mirror the lace across the opening. They didn’t quite make it, which makes it more jarring than not trying to mirror the lace at all would have been.

On the back, the armhole has been cut in the strangest shape I’ve seen in a long time. Because this is lace, you can actually see where her underarm is and how far away the curve of the armhole sits. It looks like someone cut the front and back of the armhole symmetrically. The front is usually cut with a deeper curve than the back because the arm actually sits forward on the body and you need more room for forward movement than backward. This is just a weird choice and feels very much like a mistake.

Lastly, there’s the collar. Well, there’s not a separate collar here, technically, because there is no seam attaching a collar piece to the body. So this is actually a neckline. The salient point is, it’s badly off-center and there’s no good excuse for that. If I had to guess, I’d say someone failed to account for the placket while cutting the fabric. Or possibly that on one front piece, they measured from the edge and on the other front piece they measured from the center front (which in this case would be the line of buttons).

It’s just shoddy workmanship. Inexplicably shoddy workmanship.

Fit, or lack thereof

The bodice is too tight. This is a common problem in JMo’s custom-made costume pieces. There is stress and strain absolutely everywhere at even modest movement. Lace also doesn’t recover from stretching as well as some other fabrics, so the wrinkles caused by that strain tend to remain after the strain is reduced.

Even the bodice of the gown itself is too tight, as evidenced in this BTS picture. I have a very strong suspicion that this is the reason the pleats are off-center in other BTS pictures. Sometimes a garment being too tight will cause it to creep either up or around (or both).

The cummerbund is also too tight, but there are some other issues with that piece which we’ll get to shortly.

Straight lines vs. curves

Straight horizontal elements are rarely a good idea in clothing design. Most of the time, even if you appear to have a horizontal line, it’s actually a gentle curve. Waistlines, for example, are usually drafted a little higher in back and lower in front. It’s more aesthetically pleasing because straight lines on the body are pretty unnatural for most people, and a curve also tends to fit better than a straight horizontal seam.

Why use straight lines when gentle curves are more flattering? Straight lines are easier and faster. We’ll talk about that toward the end.

In this case, straight lines have been substituted in place of the original curves at the neckline of the gown (not the jacket) and the cummerbund. The original has an elegant sweetheart neckline that dips in the middle. The curve suggests the contour of the body without revealing anything. The curve of the cummerbund serves a similar purpose. It’s all about framing her figure in a flattering manner.

What went wrong with Emma’s? The neckline is kind of dipped—maybe a little—but not enough to be noticeable. The cummerbund is straight too, meaning instead of showing off her figure, it flattens everything.

Proportions

The most baffling choice to me in this garment is the changes in proportions of the bodice. The bodice of Helen Rose’s original design is all about the rule of threes. There are three sections—cummerbund, lace over gown, and lace alone—and each is roughly the same size. In particular, the high cummerbund gives visual lift to the bust. It’s all in service of the silhouette. The swan neck and the narrow, extra-long sleeves emphasize the vertical element of the design. The waist is also slightly high, which brings the eye upward to the more interesting parts of the dress.

As you can probably tell, the cummerbund of the costume has been significantly altered from the original. It’s much, much narrower, with a straight top edge instead of a curve. Kelly’s had a few well-defined pleats; this one is a mess. The edge that’s flipped up is also a sign that it’s too tight.

But more important is how the change to proportion and shape affects the whole. Instead of framing the bust, this flat neckline and narrow cummerbund make her torso look flatter. It’s the most baffling change they made in my opinion.

Less baffling is why they changed the train. You can’t really dance in a dress with six feet of fabric trailing behind you. But in that case, why have a train at all? Why have one this anemic? This looks like a mistake, and if they hadn’t done this, I wouldn’t now be complaining about how crappy that hem is. And yeah, the section on quality problems was a while ago, but the wild thing about this dress is that it’s nearly impossible to separate all its problems into single categories, and now you know why it’s taken me nearly a year to get around to writing this post despite the absurd amount of time I’ve been thinking about it.

The length of the veil was likely altered for the same reason (Kelly’s was floor-length), but could they have picked a more awkward length?

Updating period garments

In the post on Emma’s pink date dress, I talked some about recreating period garments. Helen Rose’s design would have been made to wear with a 50s-style bra, obviously, but also a girdle to shape the waist and a crinoline to shape the skirt. Not wearing appropriate undergarments for the design has a huge effect on how the garment looks. If you’re going to make this literal a copy of a garment, then you really need to go all in with the whole look. On the set of various Star Trek series, Robert Blackman famously had custom underwear made for everyone who wore a Starfleet uniform. Undergarments are that important.

If they weren’t going to have JMo in a girdle (which for the record I do not blame anyone for choosing not to do), then the crinoline needed to be larger. A critical part of the silhouette of the original dress is the waist-to-hip ratio. Emma’s version puffs out a little but not nearly as dramatically. The crinoline seems to be the one place where they attempted to modernize the dress at all. But instead of really updating it and using an A-line silhouette, they kept the bell shape and just made it less bell-shaped. Attempting to adhere to the original silhouette but not doing it at all faithfully is a large part of why this copy is so lackluster and unpolished.

Context

The original garment was designed for a royal wedding in a Catholic country, pre-Vatican II. Its modesty is in deference to those factors. This was a gown meant to look regal, even statuesque in photographs.

Emma Swan’s wedding is a musical number. She needed a dress for dancing. What she got is incredibly awkward. The skirt doesn’t swish nicely when she moves. It is, in fact, so heavy that whenever she spins around, she looks like she’s in danger of being knocked down by the skirt’s momentum. The tightness of the jacket is really exacerbated whenever she lifts her arms, which is a thing that happens pretty often while dancing. And the veil—the veil. That thing swings around so wildly that I’m amazed no one on set stepped in and had her take it off. There are shots where it looks like it’s going to whack her in the face.

It just looks like she’s being attacked and swallowed up by this monstrosity of a gown, and it’s shocking to me that anyone with any notion of how clothing behaves would look at the original gown and say “yes, this will be great for a dance number.”

I don’t want to get much into questions of “would Emma Swan wear this,” but... would she? Is she a big fan of Grace Kelly? Hugely fond of 50s style? Where did this dress even come from in the universe of the show? It wasn’t there at the beginning of the episode when she was looking at dresses. Was it custom made by some seamstress in town? Are we supposed to believe it was conjured up with magic? And if that’s the case why didn’t they show us that? It’s a show about fairy tales and they’re not going to take the opportunity to do a Cinderella-style magical dress?

This doesn’t feel like a decision made in the universe of the show. It feels like someone fixated on this dress and to hell with making any logical sense within the story.

Feasibility

Grace Kelly’s gown was made in the MGM costume workshop. Helen Rose had a team of 36 seamstresses to construct it, and it took them six weeks to complete. That’s thousands of hours of labor from some of the most skilled dressmakers in the country.

I don’t know how many people Eduardo Castro had working on this, but I doubt he had a staff of 36. I know they didn’t have six weeks—Castro has said that they only had two weeks to make it. (They also only had one fitting, which... explains a lot.) With those constraints, and a TV budget, making a good copy of this dress simply was not possible.

But Castro and his team have made beautiful gowns under the same restrictions before, so what’s the difference here? Castro’s most successful designs have been ones where the design itself is relatively simple. Most of the garments worn in the show are of relatively basic construction. The richness comes from the textiles used, like sarees or quilted fabrics. Patterns were also reused. Snow’s gown in 1.11 is the same pattern as Belle’s in 1.12. These are smart shortcuts for a workshop that doesn’t have unlimited time or budget. The latter in particular had a twofold benefit: it established a consistent style for the universe of the show, and it streamlined the work for Castro’s team.

The worst costumes produced for this show have been the ones that step outside of the design language Castro established early on, notably Elsa and Ingrid’s gowns. This one suffers from the same problem. Instead of starting from a known pattern, they had to start from scratch. Pattern drafting requires time, and as I noted in an earlier section, the jacket in particular has some unusual and challenging features that would need a lot of precision to get right. By picking a design where they couldn’t rely on the time-saving methods they had developed over the years, their ability to produce a high-quality garment was immediately hampered. This is probably part of the reason they used straight lines instead of curves to the detriment of the garment, why the seam finishes on the lace are so inconsistent and bad, and why something as simple as the pleats on the skirt look so sloppy.

And that’s not even getting into the budget. The materials alone for Kelly’s dress cost more than $70,000 in today’s money. The lace jacket was made from Brussels lace made in the 1830s. This was quite simply not something that could be replicated well on the budget of a network television series.

There is to my mind an ethical issue as well. Days of publicity went by before anyone mentioned that this dress was a copy of Helen Rose’s work. Almost immediately a narrative sprang up that Morrison had “helped design” Emma’s wedding gown, but this notion is patently false. No design went into this, only minor tweaks of another artist’s seminal work.

Helen Rose was highly acclaimed in her day, but her lasting legacy is Grace Kelly’s wedding gown. Her work deserves better homage than this poorly conceived and poorly executed disaster.

When it debuted, it was the only television show in South Korea to focus on the Hip Hop genre. Many rappers whether American, Korean or Chinese will say that hiphop is a culture, something larger than a genre of music. It encompasses many things, many parts of people's life. As MC Jin once eloquently puts it, "Hiphop reflects the world." He says the violence and curse words in hiphop comes from the fact that people are suffering in the world. So how did K Hip-Hop arrive at this point?

The angsty yet inclusive cultural movement of hip-hop first popped up in Korea around the late 1980s. While Korean hip-hop was largely influenced by its western origins, much like every other country's hip-hop scene, it became inventive around 2001 where new artists starting overcoming the challenges of following Korean language grammatical structures. I think I sent an ask, seeking advice as to how I should include Scott in my Sterek fics as to avoid the issue of POC erasure, and in this particular instance, erasing Scott. I want to write about Stiles and Derek romantically without erasing Scott, so that was the gist of my ask, which you clumped together with trolling asks.

The exact nature and suggestions of how to do this would vary drastically based on the plot, genre, and trope of your fic. But most broadly speaking:

1.) Remember that Scott is his own character and person. Ideally, you'd be doing this with every character - they have their own narratives, we're just only seeing part of it because they aren't the main character of the show. I specify this because a lot of fics write him - and everyone other than Derek and Stiles (and sometimes even Derek) - as caricatures, cardboard character cut-outs whose purpose is to make the main character (predominantly Stiles) feed bad and/or look good. Scott - and Erica, and Isaac, and Boyd, and Allison, etc etc. - are all characters of their own, with their own lives and their own problems.

Whoever's POV your story is through, take a step out of it and try to figure out, what do the other characters know? What do they physically see and hear, for them to understand your main character? A lot of characters (not just Scott, though primarily Scott) are written as assholes for the crime of not reading Stiles' mind and knowing that he's struggling, despite the fact he'd put a lot of work into hiding said struggling. When writing a scene between two or more characters, always try to think, what do those other characters? And how/why do they know it? If you don't have an answer to the second question, then the answer to the first question is, "They don't." - If they didn't see or hear or whatever something in canon, then you either have to write knowing that this character does not know everything you do or that your POV character does - or, you have to create and write how they find out what you need them to know.

2.) If writing about canon, try to remember what everyone was doing during the relevant bits of canon - and the bits before and after. A lot of the scenes in which Scott is blamed for abandoning or ignoring Stiles, Scott was in the middle of his own problem or already trying to help. While Stiles was trapped in the pool, Scott was at the Argents' home, and had no idea Stiles was in danger. When Stiles was kidnapped, Scott was already working with Isaac on a plan to track Stiles' scent to look for him...when Derek and Peter showed up. They explained that the kanima might not be dead Gerard (the only threat left) still has control over it. A few scenes later, Stiles is already at home (meaning no one needed to rescue him), while Scott, Derek, Peter, and Isaac are working on what to do about the kanima.

(And something to think about for the final confrontation of Season 2 - how did Stiles know where to go, when he drove Lydia there? Either this was the plan all along and he was in on it - contrary to popular fanon that Scott had kept his plan from Stiles - or Stiles had been in contact with Scott, in which case Scott already knew that Stiles was safe/at home.)

3.) That level of critical thinking should also be applied to your own assumptions about the characters. It's hard to remember, sometimes, what's fanon and what's canon. Try to always double check your assumptions and biases - especially if they portray a Character of Color or a female character in a negative light. Ideally, looking at the show itself, though not everybody has access to that. While I do, I actually/mostly use the Teen Wolf Wikia, which has complete synopses of every episode ever aired. I copied and pasted them all into one notebook (on Evernote; you'll want to compile them all into one place in wherever it is you keep notes or information, or put them all into one Word Document or GoogleDoc). This way, I can just use Ctrl+F to search all the synopses of every episode of the show thus far (not to mention the Wiki is a slow website and will make you want to throw it in a tire-fire if you need to look at multiple pages on it). The goal, in this case, it to look for things to support your assumptions about characters and events - or, to challenge them.

(i.e. there is no scene in which Stiles finds out about Scott's plan...including after it happened. Meanwhile, he doesn't even seem to notice Gerard's half-dead, black-blooded body, or seem particularly surprised by it. Now, this could mean Scott hadn't told Stiles about the plan - but it does not definitively mean that, and it could also mean Stiles knew about that plan all along, it was just the viewers who hadn't known. Challenge your assumption, and if you realize there is no canonical support for your assumption, either try writing your story without it, or make a point of including/creating new support for it in your fanfic - i.e. talking about when Stiles found out about the plan, and how he hadn't known about it before. If you're writing an AU, write your AU.)

I don't think Scott has to be at the center of your fic or all Sterek fics or all Teen Wolf fics ever. I think it's problematic that he gets only a fraction of the fics two white secondary characters get, but that is a much, much bigger problem than you and I could ever hope to address, and it's a bit too late in Teen Wolf's fandom history to do much about it, anyway. The goal is to at least stop writing fics where his strengths and accomplishments from the show are erased or given to white characters, and to stop justifying or erasing white characters' vulnerabilities, flaws, or mistakes.

i.e. Stiles has many strengths - empathy isn't one of them, but that doesn't mean he's a bad friend. You don't have to force empathy onto him to write him as a good character, or cast him as a bad one because he lacks it. He isn't all that nurturing - and he doesn't need to be, he can be a good and supportive friend without suddenly turning into a housewife.

For some more concrete examples, here are a few Sterek fics which wrote Scott really well. These are not all/the only Sterek fics with a good Scott balance in them, just some (my personal favorites). For the sake of simplicity, I limited this to canon-divergence or "post-canon" fics:

So I just got back from seeing the final part of WaSuYu in theaters.

I miscalculated how long it would take to get there, so I was almost too late. I sprinted through the train stations and Nihonbashi, and I made it into the screen with mere seconds to spare. No, seriously.

Yuuki Yuuna proves that even ripoffs can be good. At first glance, this looks like a dark magical girl show trying to piggyback off Madoka’s popularity, but it is actually interesting in its own right. The OP is very nice, fitting the tone of the show perfectly, and I liked the subtle changes in it as the anime went on. Additionally, the animation was decent, and the production quality in general was nothing to complain about.

Now for the story. While Madoka slowly built up to multiple large, shocking moments, YuYuYu went for a constant, slow burn. And I think it worked. We were given plenty of time to see the camaraderie in the Hero Club and grow to care about them - notice how one episode was devoted entirely to making friends with Karin. The shocking moment happened halfway through, meaning we got a LONG time to watch the girls deal with their new situation. A lot of ordinary, everyday scenes helped us appreciate the burdens they had to be put through because of their duty. Yes, the dark aspect to the magical girl system isn’t as dark as Madoka’s, but I still felt for these characters because I saw how their lives, once happy and peaceful (which we saw!), were being derailed by the Taisha’s whims. It’s why, despite how little characterization Karin got, I felt utter despair when I saw her reckless insanity in episode eleven. The manner in which this was all carried out greatly impressed me, creating a far better anime than I was expecting. Also, props to the anime for being so detailed in its lore, like having a reason why Tougou had three fairies instead of one.

That said, it’s not without its flaws. For example, Yuuna was easily the most boring and least developed character, despite being in the series’s title. Plus, the talking-down of the... antagonist, I guess - in the final episode seemed pretty rushed, since they clearly wanted to just get to the aftermath already. And that final scene was unnecessary. The anime would’ve been much better if it hadn’t happened, leaving us on a downer that could lead into season two - perhaps with some characterization of Yuuna through flashback. But they had to have their happy ending. If it had been any character besides Yuuna, it would’ve been more powerful, but it had to be her because she was in the title. So characterize her more, dang it! I shouldn’t be thinking, “Well, at least Itsuki’s okay” when I see that scene! Freaking Itsuki, the girl who’d be a literal nobody in any other magical girl anime! That said, though, Tougou was best girl.

And now for WaSuYu.

What the heck happened here? This is way worse than the main series. Not only was there an unforgivable amount of CGI - which, by the way, looks positively hideous on a movie theater’s screen - but they didn’t even really bring anything new to the table. It was just a rehash of what Nogi told us in the main series, with nothing shocking happening. Even the final battle was pretty understated, and clearly a product of diminishing runtime (which they could’ve gotten if they had eliminated all the useless segments from the second part). I expected them to Bloom in one battle, win, and then have the next battle be the final one. That way, they’d have time for the fear to set in, like with the Hero Club. But no, they had to rush through it all in one go. Heck, the battle wasn’t even led into very well. It could’ve used several more seconds of silence to drive the point home, but they had to have that dang ringtone blaring and breaking the mood. And then they tried to forcibly increase the tension by dropping death flags over and over. Heck, Nogi’s rampage was even cut short! That final battle should’ve made up the entire third part. But hey, they just couldn’t bear to cut out Wasshi’s CGI exercise song. That was indispensable.

Oh, and let’s not forget that the transformation sequences were perving over the bodies of elementary school girls. What is this, Nanoha? Even the Hero Club didn’t get perved over during the transformation sequences, and they’re in middle school. Plus, we had to have a transformation sequence every time in WaSuYu, while YuYuYu just did it once. Were they really that desperate to fill runtime? Could they not think of better things to do, like executing the final battle well? Or did they just not have any budget? That would be pretty easy to believe, considering all the butt-ugly CGI and the painfully obvious stock sound effects.

All that said, though, there were moments that impressed me, the chief one being how they handled the... the aftermath of the end of part two, so as to avoid spoilers. The BGM, the pacing, the camera angles, the animation, the choice of scenes - it was all spot-on, creating an emotional punch that I honestly didn’t expect to receive from the anime that gave us a CGI exercise song about furuki yoki Nippon. The aftermath of those scenes was done well, too, giving the audience a mental break from the gut-punch they just had to sit through. It didn’t end prematurely, and it didn’t overstay its welcome. Though they could’ve led into that final battle better. Heck, if this had been four parts instead of three, adding in another battle before the last one, this would’ve been incredible, despite its low production values. And, of course, they would’ve had to give us something to think about in the final scenes, instead of just copy-pasting scenes from YuYuYu.

YuYuYu has plenty of flaws, but it excels at what it tries to do. It’s not as good as Madoka, but I’m glad I watched it. Just don’t expect much out of WaSuYu.

My final rating for Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero is a six out of ten.

How to plan a vacation in 7 steps

You know what one of my favorite parts of vacations is?

No, it’s not going to awesome places.

The backyard pool of my hotel room in Thailand.

Or eating delicious food.

I’m the one on the left.

One of my favorite things is planning the vacation. Nothing makes me feel better than a well-formatted calendar with flight info and dinner reservations.

Check out this itinerary I prepped for a recent trip to Singapore:

I even include things like the weather and information for airport lounge access.

Why show you this? Three reasons:

I want you to be 100% clear of how much of a weirdo I am.

I want to show you how seriously I take my travel planning (right down to options for what I’m doing during my free time).

I want you to realize that this level of vacation planning helps make my trip MUCH easier.

Planning a vacation doesn’t have to be a pain. That’s why I want to show you a great system you can use to plan the perfect trip.

How to plan a vacation (and not hate yourself)

This system can be broken up into 7 steps:

Step 1: Decide where to go

Step 2: Pick a time to travel

Step 3: Take time off work

Step 4: Find affordable flights

Step 5: Find a great place to stay

Step 6: Call your credit card companies

Step 7: Budget consciously for your trip

It looks like a lot…and it is. However, you can make the process a lot simpler with a few productivity systems.

My suggestion? Put it on your calendar.

Some of these steps will take a few days to accomplish (e.g., deciding where to go), whereas some will take just an hour or so (e.g., calling your credit card companies).

Delegate time on your Google Calendar to each step so you have all the action steps organized.

To help you even more with planning your vacation, we also talked to a few notable travel bloggers and professionals on how you can get the most out of your vacation planning. They’ve dedicated themselves to helping others get the most out of their travel experiences — and now they want to help you.

So without further ado…

Step 1: Decide where and how to go

Naturally, where and how you go is determined by your individual circumstances:

Are you more crunched for time or money?

Are you traveling alone or with friends or your family?

Is your work flexible with when you can leave or do you have a set time frame when you can travel (e.g., a teacher)?

Do you want to go somewhere close by where you can drive, or would you have to fly?

And depending on your situation, you might break from the suggestions in this article — and that’s okay! I only want to provide a framework you can work from. What you do with it is ultimately up to you.

Knowing this, you’re going to want to decide where you want to go. Doing this first is important for two big reasons:

It helps you psychologically. The mental benefits of setting a good goal are enormous. Having a goal destination in mind gives you something to work for when you’re preparing for your trip.

It determines practically every aspect of planning. No two vacation destinations are alike, which means each destination is going to change the way you tailor your budget and itinerary.

It can often be hard though to decide where you want to go.

After all, you can travel anywhere in the entire world. With all of your choices, how are you going to decide?

There are three great areas you can look towards to find your next vacation spot:

Recommendations

Social media

Friends and family

Recommendations

People you trust can be great sources of destination inspiration — and it’s the main way Matthew Karsten, aka the Expert Vagabond, decides where to go next.

“Word of mouth is probably my top source for recommendations,” Karsten says. “[When I hear of a good place], I keep a bucket list of destinations I want to visit in Evernote, along with details about possible activities and links to relevant online articles.”

Ask your friends and loved ones for good vacation recommendations. See what they liked about the place and what you can do there if you decide to visit.

Also, create a “bucket list” of destinations you’d love to go to.

It doesn’t have to be on Evernote either. It can also be in a Google Doc, Excel sheet, the Notes app on your phone, or in your middle school diary. Every time a friend recommends a place to go, write it down. You can refer to this later when deciding where you want to go.

Social media

Your Facebook and Instagram aren’t just for getting likes, you can also use them to find awesome vacation destinations.

“I use Instagram’s ‘collections’ feature to save other people’s photos based on location,” says Karsten.

He continues, “Instagram changed travel a lot. All of a sudden, destinations that never saw too many tourists are getting swamped with people trying to copy popular photos they saw on Instagram.”

Though you might not want to copy other people’s photos, you can leverage Instagram collections like Matt and start compiling your own images from places you’d like to go. For information on how to exactly do that, check out Instagram’s page on it here.

Friends and family

Sometimes the best vacation destinations are where your friends and family are. Not only can they help you save money on accommodations but they can also fill you in on things to do there.

“I’ve been traveling more for friendships than anything else,” Naveen Dittakavi of the travel deal website Next Vacay says. “It’s nice to bond and catch up with old friends — especially as we get older.”

Do you have a friend you’ve been meaning to visit for a while? Or maybe a family member you haven’t seen in a long time? Reach out to them and use the opportunity to visit them.

ACTION STEP: Decide where you want to go — and get specific

Once you decide where you want to go, I want you to get specific with it. It can be anywhere. Say you decide, “I want to go to London!” I want you to get even more specific with it.

A good example: “By July, I want to go to London for a week with my boyfriend.”

If you want to take it a step further, set a SMART objective for your vacation plans.

SMART stands for:

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Relevant

Time-oriented

It’s the solution to vague goal setting that gets you nowhere. Like whenever anyone says, “I want to get fit” for their New Year’s Resolution or “I want to travel in the future.”

The way it works is it niches down these big vague goals and gets precise with them. This leads to better focus when you set out to accomplish your goals.

Step 2: Pick a time to travel

Traveling is like a game of Twister: It��s best to stay flexible.

When you travel is just as important as where you travel. In fact, your timing can mean the difference of hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars in airfare.

Let’s say you want to take a 7-day trip to Cabo from New York City.

Here’s what a flight from July 6 to July 13 costs:

And here’s a flight two months later:

Time matters! Which is why you should be flexible with your travels.

“Flexibility is the most important thing in finding a cheap flight,” travel blogger and entrepreneur Nomadic Matt says. “You need to be flexible in your date. If you have to go to Paris on a specific date, then you have to pay the fare. There’s no magic bullet to make the price go down.”

He continues, “But by changing your date by a day or two, you might be able to drop the price.”

If you want to find the best time to travel to a destination, consider these three things about the location:

Peak season. This is the time of year when most tourists will visit a location. This is often due to good weather and holidays surrounding it (e.g., the Grand Canyon or Mount Rushmore in the summer). Flights and accommodations tend to be the most expensive during this time.

Off-peak season. This is when the majority of tourists aren’t visiting a destination — typically due to weather (e.g., a ski lodge in the summer). You’ll normally find very affordable flights and accommodations during this time, but on the flip side, there’s usually a reason for it being “off-peak.” In some countries, off-peak can mean a monstrous monsoon happens nearly every day.

Shoulder season. This is the time between peak and off-peak — and a good time to take advantage of the benefits from both seasons.

“Shoulder seasons are my favorite time to visit,” Karsten says. “You don’t want to visit during the wrong season.”

Shoulder seasons allow travelers to take advantage of good weather at a certain destination, AND there’s the added benefit of lowered cost on flights and accommodations.

(Also you don’t have to deal with a bunch of annoying tourists.)

ACTION STEP: Find a date to go on vacation

Pull up Google Calendar and start looking at dates that work for you.

If you’re looking to save extra money on travel, consider your destination’s off-season or shoulder season.

Nailing down when exactly they occur isn’t difficult, though, as long as you take into account several factors. The biggest of which are:

Weather. Summer is always going to be an incredibly busy time for common vacation destinations like cruises, beaches, and…well, anywhere where there are outdoor activities. Also the fact that school is out for the summer means families will be traveling a LOT during this time.

Holidays. You know what’s more expensive than vacationing in New York City? Going to New York City on New Year’s Eve. And if you’re budget conscious, you’re going to want to keep in mind the holidays when YOU travel. Depending on the destination, flights and hotels are going to be more expensive if it lands on a major holiday.

Bryce Conway, CEO of the travel hacking site 10xTravel.com, leverages this knowledge when he travels, saying:

“One of my wife’s and I’s favorite thing to do each year is to go to Western Europe either over President’s Day weekend or MLK Day weekend. It’s not a holiday over there. The weather is not as nice as it is in America, but everything is half price and you can walk straight in.”

A few other ways you can find an area’s peak season:

Call the local tourism office. Most every country, state, and city will have a tourism office that’ll be more than happy to help you with your travel plans. Simply ask them, “When’s your peak season months?” (For a comprehensive directory of tourism offices, follow this link.)

Compare flights and hotel prices for different dates online. If you find that the date you’re trying to book is WAY more expensive than another one a few months away, you might be booking on peak season.

Remember: Not all destinations are alike. That means their peak, off-peak, and shoulder seasons will be different.

Once you know where and when you want to travel, it’s time to…

Step 3: Take time off of work

SAD FACT OF THE DAY: The majority of Americans don’t use all of their vacation days.

A 2016 study conducted by Project: Time Off (an organization dedicated to improving people’s work culture) discovered that Americans lost 222 million unused vacation days over the course of the year due to pressures at work.

This. Is. RIDICULOUS!!!

You’re losing time and money by not taking your vacation days. These are benefits ensured to you by your employer. Use them!

And if you’re on vacation, you’re definitely going to want to use them (yes, even YOU remote and freelance workers).

ACTION STEP: Take time off of work

The difficulty of requesting vacation days varies from job to job. However, you can make the process simple for you and your company by using some good old-fashioned scripts.

Oh look, here’s one now:

Subject: Vacation request (October 2nd through October 6th)

Hi [manager’s name],

I’d like to request vacation time from Monday, October 2nd, through Friday, October 6th because I’ll be taking a family vacation over those days.

While I’m gone, I’ll be reachable by phone but not email. I’ll be making sure that we have coverage in the support queue while I’m gone, and I’ll also be distributing a playbook to my team so it’s clear who owns which issues.

Is this OK?

This is a great script to use even if your vacation is during a “busy time” for your company.

Why? First, consider why your boss might want to deny you vacation time:

You own a project and it might not get done while you’re gone.

The work might end up on your boss’s plate.

Your boss might have to delegate YOUR tasks to other workers (which nobody likes doing).

This script addresses all of these points in the last paragraph. By showing that you’ve already gone the extra mile to make sure that your responsibilities will be taken care of in your absence, you allay your boss’s concerns that your work won’t get done.

It also maintains a friendly tone throughout the message AND you give a good reason for your absence. You’ll want to send this email weeks — possibly even months — in advance. It’s far easier for your boss to say “yes” when the company has time to plan for your absence.

Step 4: Find affordable flights

One of the most common misconceptions about traveling is the idea that flying (especially international) has to be expensive.

I have my thoughts on this…but I’ll let celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay take it from here:

In fact, flying can be one of the most affordable parts of the trip if you know how to leverage the right tools.

Two of the most effective tools to find affordable flights are:

Travel credit cards

Repositioning with error fares

Let’s take a look at both now.

Travel credit cards

We’ve written about travel credit cards before — but it bears repeating:

Using travel credit cards to pay for flights is a Big Win.

Say a round-trip flight from New York to Paris costs $500.

If you book using the card we’re about to suggest, you could get that same flight for FREE.

In fact, you can save THOUSANDS each year if you leverage reward points. And the more time you have to plan, the more points you can amass — many cards even give you sign up bonuses.

But with so many options out there, which one should you get?

Simple: The Chase Sapphire Preferred. (Not an affiliate link)

Credit: Wallaby Financial

“If you want to use credit cards for their reward points, I suggest that card,” Naveen says. “It’s classic, it’s solid, and the redemption options are incredible. An all-around great card for a beginner.”

A few fast facts on the Preferred:

Annual fee: $95 (waived the first year)

Bonus: 50,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months)

Double points on dining and travel: If you’re automating your finances and have a Conscious Spending Plan laid out, you’ll be able to have plenty of money left over each month to earn points through travel and dining purchases.

1:1 point transfer to other travel programs: This helps you get first class seats on international flights with Chase’s affiliate airlines.

The 50,000 points also amount to about $625 towards your airplane ticket if redeemed through Chase’s Travel Rewards program.

And remember, you can also use your points to redeem things other than flights including hotel rooms and rental cars.

If you’re nervous about getting into travel hacking through credit cards, that’s okay. There’s another solution that’ll help you find ridiculously cheap flights.

Repositioning with error fares

I’ll give it to you straight: Airlines really mess up sometimes.

Sometimes their mishaps lead to some great deals for you through “error fares.” Error fares are airline tickets that are, temporarily, a WAY lower price than they’d normally be (typically through technical or human error). These fares often mean travelers can get tickets from mainland U.S. to places like Europe and Asia for a few hundred dollars or less.

To find these errors and deals, there are a number of websites that are dedicated to hunting them out.

Here are a few that I suggest you leverage the next time you’re finding flights:

Secret Flying. This site immediately posts any errors or deals they find. You can even use their handy search function and enter your country of origin and destination so they can find a deal more suited for you.

The Flight Deal. Another great site to find amazing deals on airfare as well as hotels, rental cars, and travel credit cards. They also give you information on flight deals happening in almost every major U.S. metro area.

Scott’s Cheap Flights. A tried-and-true resource when it comes to finding error deals. Scott’s offers a free newsletter that’ll notify you whenever they find a deal along with instructions on how to book it.

Next Vacay. This is Naveen’s (one of our Zero To Launch graduates) very own site that helps travelers find the best deals. Next Vacay automatically crawls through various airfare sites to find you the cheapest flight possible.

One key thing to remember when purchasing an error fare:

DON’T CALL THE AIRLINE COMPANY TO BOOK!!

You’re taking advantage of their mistake. If you point out how they messed up, they’re going to realize it and not let you have the deal. Stick to booking through the sites above or through third-party sites like Skyscanner instead.

Also don’t ignore an amazing flight deal because it’s departing from a different airport than the one closest to you. Remember how it’s important to be flexible on when you leave? Same goes for where you leave.

This is key to a process called “repositioning.”

Repositioning simply means that you’re willing to depart from an airport that might not be close to you. Also, you might be arriving at a destination that might not be your final one.

From Naveen:

“You don’t have to fly out of your own home city. I’m from Atlanta. However, when I flew out to India a few years ago I didn’t fly out of Atlanta. I booked a few different tickets that took me from Baltimore, then back to Atlanta, then to Paris, then to Bombay. I ended up coming back through my home airport — but it was cheaper than trying to find a flight from Atlanta to India!”

Say you live in Denver and want to fly to London. All the flights from your airport are crazy expensive ($900+).

However, you find a flight going out of Chicago to London for $200 on Scott’s Cheap Flights. A quick search on Skyscanner shows you that a flight to Chicago is just $90 from Denver.

It’s cheaper then to fly to Chicago and catch that amazing flight deal for $290 total.

“If you’re willing to go to a different airport, you can save a TON of money,” Naveen says. “If you want to go to say Paris, but there other cities in Europe on sale like Dublin, you can then take a flight to there and hop on over to where you want to go in Europe via train or plane.”

By repositioning your origin point and destination, you can save a ton of money on airfare. It’s going to take more time but the trade-off is huge for your wallet. Remember: When traveling you’ll often be pressed for either money or time. Choose your flights accordingly.

ACTION STEP: Start searching for error fares — and reposition if you have to

You might even get lucky and find an error fare through an airport near you!

Once you have your flight, you’re going to want to make sure you have a place to stay while you’re on vacation too. That brings us to…

Step 5: Find a good place to stay

Finding a great place to stay that doesn’t break the bank sometimes seems impossible.

However, finding a great deal on accommodations is simple IF you’re willing to break the mold.

“[My wife and I] were in Switzerland a couple of years ago and we stayed at a hostel in a private room,” recalls Naveen. “There are no budget hotels in a place like Switzerland. It’s either a hostel or ultra-glamorous hotel. The hostel we stayed at was still very comfortable and affordable for us though.”

Along with hostels, travelers can also find great, affordable places to stay through home sharing sites like Airbnb or Couchsurfing.

“If you really want to save money on accommodations, backpacker hostels are the way to go,” Karsten says. “I once spent a month living in a Nicaraguan hostel for $5 a night!”

If you really prefer to stay in a hotel though, that’s okay! You can book awesome deals on hotels using travel credit cards since they often allow you to spend points on hotel rooms.

There are even awesome cards like the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card that allow you to maximize your points for hotel stays.

Many websites also exist to help you get the most out of your hotel bookings.

“One site I really like is i-escape.com,” suggests Naveen. “They have sweet deals for hotel accommodations at different price points. Another great one is Hotels.com. They have a program that holds 10% of your spend with them, and eventually they give you a free night. So every 10 nights or so, you can get a free night in a hotel.”

ACTION STEP: Book a great place to stay

By being flexible and a bit judicious with your accommodation search, you can find an awesome place to stay during your vacation and not break the bank.

Use the tools below to help you find some of the best deals on places to stay.

Airbnb. More than just renting spare bedrooms, you can find some really cool places at a relatively low cost if you are diligent in your search (you can even stay in a freaking castle!).

Hotels.com. They’ve aggregated accommodations ranging from uber-luxury hotels to small mom-and-pop bed and breakfasts. Also, they’ll kick back a free night in a hotel for frequent users. Awesome.

i-escape.com. Though a bit more limited in selection, i-escape gives travelers only the best accommodations at the best prices.

HostelBookers.com. With over 35,000 hostels in over 170 countries, HostelBookers should be your first stop when trying to find a good hostel. You’ll have no trouble finding an awesome (yet budget-friendly) option here.

HostelWorld. Another great option to find hostels. The site’s 24/7 customer support is also at your call in case you have any questions or concerns about your bookings.

Step 6: Call your credit card companies

Imagine you’ve finally made that trip to Paris you’ve always dreamed of. You’re taking in the sights, the sounds, and the people. You LOVE it. So you decide to buy yourself a nice meal to celebrate your first night — and it’s amazing.

Then comes time to pay for your check. You hand your credit card over. Your waiter scans it…and scans it…and scans it again.

He hands it back to you and shakes his head.

Declined.

You don’t have any other way to pay for it. Soon you’re in a French gulag, breaking big rocks into smaller rocks until you can repay your debt. This is what could happen (probably) if you don’t warn your credit card company about your travels.

Credit card companies get nervous when they see you make purchases you don’t normally make — especially when those purchases are somewhere you don’t live.

That’s why it’s important to give them a heads up before you go.

From Naveen:

“I call my card companies beforehand in order to tell them about our travel plans. Most of these companies don’t even need you to talk to a rep — it’s fully automated.

You just call up the company and say, ‘travel plan’ at the prompt. Then they’ll ask you for the countries you’re going to in order of your visit, when you’re going, and when you’re coming back.

Then they authorize the cards to be used in each of those countries.”

ACTION STEP: Tell your credit card companies about your travels — but prep for the worst

Call your credit card company and tell them about your trip.

Here are the numbers for the major card companies out there to help:

Visa: 1-800-847-2911

Mastercard: 1-800-307-7309

Discover: 1-800-347-2683

American Express: 1-800-528-4800

Simply inform the representative that you plan on traveling and that you’ll be using your card. They’ll ask you where you’re going, how long you’ll be gone for, and voila! You’re prepped for travel.

Much like airlines, credit card companies often screw up even when you give them the heads up.

You might find yourself in a situation where you’ve warned them that you’ll be traveling and they still cancel your credit card when you try to make a purchase abroad.

That’s okay! Because you’re an IWT reader, you’ve prepped for this situation by packing two alternatives:

Cash. It’s always a good idea to carry $100 – $500 in emergency cash just in case something goes wrong. “I bring cash with me just in case my card doesn’t work while traveling,” Naveen says.

ATM/Debit card. One of the biggest hassles when it comes to getting money while abroad is international fees — especially when it comes to ATMs. However, you can circumvent that with the right cards.

“There are certain cards that will refund your ATM transaction fee. Charles Schwab’s debit card is a great example,” Naveen says. “In fact, I have a friend who keeps a certain amount of money in his Schwab account so he can use it if he’s abroad or in Vegas or something since the fee is refunded to your account by the bank.”

Step 7: Budget consciously for the trip

There are TWO ways you can prep your vacation budget.

Both can be simple, painless, and really fun (seriously).

How to save money before travel

One of my favorite ways to save money for a trip is through a process called “mental accounting.”

Pretty much what mental accounting looks like.

Mental accounting is a psychological technique wherein people treat money differently depending on how they got it and plan on spending it.

A great example of this: Using a sub-savings account.

Most banks allow you to create a sub-savings account along with your normal savings account (you can even name them too!). You can put money into this account each month and know that it’s going towards your traveling goals.

By mentally accounting this money for travel, you’re leveraging a powerful psychological trick of focusing your savings goals.

You can even couple the sub-savings account with another great system I love: Automated finances.

Automating your finances is a system wherein your money works passively for you. It’s the ultimate cure to never knowing how much you have in your checking account and how much you can spend.

When you receive your paycheck, your money is funneled to exactly where it needs to go — whether that be your utilities, rent, Roth IRA, 401k, or your savings account.

“I always have a budget for travel,” Naveen says. “That includes saving a couple hundred dollars a month towards a travel fund. This is the money that I saved through the IWT system. I use for hotels and restaurants.”

ACTION STEP: Automate your finances
