Rate the Champions

Based off of and inspired by @gale-of-the-nomads and @nerdasaurus1200 rate the akuma,for @beebeebombam Lady Fairy AU,or in this case,the blind butterfly girl herself and her champions. According to wha I’ve learned from posts in bee’s posts on the tag,many of the champions like Alya as Lady Wifi,Max as the Gamer,and Nate as Illuscreator aren’t all too different from canon in tems of their abilities and design. mostly just my way of giving some attention and notice to this AU,which for a guy like me who’s pretty recent into coming into this fandom,but coming to know enough,it’s a fun and sweet AU especially for the fact it gives poor Nooroo much better than what he’s got in canon.

Marinette Dupain-Cheng,blind but as in canon,a girl with a big heart and a deep sense of empathy,wielder of the moth/butterfly Miraculous,Paris’ maker of heroes Lady Fairy

Design: A+ it really plays up th butterfly theme and motif,her mask being a blindfold is a very nice touch that serves to highlight and remind of her condition. The shades of purple and indigo work well to give a outfit that is as graceful,elegant and posied as the animal its based on and suits her name,coming off like a figure out of a fairy tale plus such glitter and sparkle

Powers: A,it’s the butterfly/moth brooch,as in canon it grants the wielder the ability to empower others and make them superheroes. Of course in this AU it’s made to be used as intended,unlike Gabriel’s selfish,wreckless evil purposes. Especially as unlike Hawkmoth,lady fairy serves more to focus on her champions’ positive emotions,guide them and motivate them rather than force control and obedience into being her puppets and twist and manipulate them at their lowest points. while it’s stated that the moth miraculous can utilise both positive and negative emotions,I feel focusing on the positive makes for a better contrast to how Hawkmoth always seeks out the negative. Bee of course adds a sweet touch to how the wielder can see through their chosen’s eyes,allowing the blind marinette to see the world she normally wouldn’t be able to due to her blindness,giviing her a growing appreciation and love for her city,her loved ones and the colours of life.

theme (As in their gimmick):A.the name,motif and design of the outfit all work together,making her seem like a figure from a court of nobility from a fairy tale

Effectiveness:A.when all seems grim,always know if you have a strong heart,this sweet soul will give you the means to do what’s right,because she believes in you. as a true butterfly wielder should.

Personal enjoyment: A I’ve seen maybe one or two,if not near half a dozen fanarts based on kwami swap with Mari as the butterfly miraculous wielder. This is my personal favourite of the bunch in terms of concept and design.

next we come to the villain of the story,grand iceking douchebag and shitty parent,the socially reclusive bastard Gabriel Aggreste,aka Le Paon,wilder of the peacock miraculous,which I assume isn’t as damaged as it is canon Design- A,very sinister and classy,but different and unique compared to his hawkmoth outfit,but just as enigmatic. has a somewhat sens of style and class to it,which makes sense given peacocks and their natural flamboyance and Gabriel’s status as a fashion designer

Powers- A.as in canon,the peacock brooch is similar but different to the buttefly in that rather than use someone’s emotions to empower them,it takes a partciular emotion they’re feeling and gives it a shape and form,granting the wielder a soldier they can command and control. making it range and very in terms of its shape and form. And unluckily,one needn’t be willing for gabriel to create a sentimonster,not that he cares,fitting given his self serving goal.

Theme- A,sinister yet classy looking individual,with an ability to enforce his will on others,much like he enforces and exerts control over his own’s son’s life. it’s one thing when hetting akumatised twisted you into being evil,but one can barely imagine the horror of being taken advantage of at your emotional low,watching as your anger,or sadness,etc are given the form of a monster that will tear all of paris apart to fulfill a mad man’s goals

Effectiveness - A. like in canon,gabriel is just hiding away,unseen by all of Paris as he keeps his sense tuned for someone at their emotional low,looking to control them much like how he controls his own son’s life. because what he believes in and thinks are right matter most,and for the ones he loves,or passes for love,all of Paris will suffer long as he gets what he wants

Personal enjoyment of the akuma-Be it the moth or the peacoc,Gabriel is as he will always be,a cold distant selfish man whose misguided sense of love and family will burn the world.

Nathalie Sancoeur,personal assistant to the villain himself,in this Au for the heroes day battle,wielder of the ladybug,which garbriel has in his possession. yes he’s halfway to this goal,which raises the stakes Design- A,similar but different to canon,a more villainouse edge thanks to the black sections,and seems to hide nathalie’s identity

Powers- A,it’s the ladybug miraculous,one can only shudder to think hw it works when not wielded by a non heroic wielder.

Theme- Unlike in canon,this is not a heroic ladybug. I’ts Nathalie doing what she thinks is right,which is helping her boss achieve his goals. not helping that she seems to love him and all

Effectiveness - hard to say as we will only see her once in the finale arc,but the ladybug miraculous on the side of devils? weep for paris

Personal enjoyment-n/a

Sabine Dupain-Cheng,Mari’s wonderful mama,aka Scilla Design- A,an elegant look and design that fits and suits the motfi of her daughter,fitting given what her powers in this form do.

Powers- A. simple but effective,she can boost and enhance others’ powers,in this case able to increase Mari’s Miraculous’ abilities as catalyst did with scarlet moth,enabling her to create multiple champions. from a lady to a queen fairy,now able to lead and command her warriors on the field of battle.

Theme- A,really plays to the sparkly classy fairy tale motif of her daughter

Reason for Akumatization-Aor championisation in this case,as bee establishes Sabine’s always known her daughter has been a hero,and given the situation in heroes’ day,how could she not want to help

Effectiveness as an akuma- A,the results speak for themselves

Personal enjoyment of the akuma-A,compared to Nathalie and Hawkmth,it’s a nice little take in reminding us how like in canon,Mari has a wonderfu bond with her parents.

Luka,Kagami,Rose and Juleka,aka Distorter,Riposte,Princess fragrance and Monster Witch

Design- A+,very more heroic takes or twists on Luka,Kagami and Rose’s canon designs,while Juleka’s is very suiting and fitting for her given her goth vibe and motif,with the eyees of coruse referencing Reflekta. makes sense esp as reflekta was more about standing out and getting attention.Rose’s and Luka’s looks are tweaked just enough to not seem like palette swaps whie Kagami’ is less silver samurai,more superheroic samurai knight

Powers- A,Riposte’s hardly needed changing or tweaking compared to her design.Distorter meanwhile is more about using sound as a weapon which can have some unique applications. Juleka’s abilities obviously needed an overhaul,as there would’ve been no way of making a heroic take on reflekta’s powers. here of course it’s more about a means of combatting a sentimonster that creates its own army,while Rose’s is more about helping out and aiding others,akin to healer type chars in rpgs and games like overwatch and team fortress 2

Theme- A,you got a heroic samurai magical girl,a disney princess with a perfume gun,a musician who can truly make music a weapon,and his perky goth sister witch,what’s not to love

Reason for Championization-can’t rate per se,but given this Au and the nature of th buttrfly,Marinette wouldn’t pick just anyone to be her champions

Effectiveness as a champion- A,chat is lucky to have this backup no doubt

Personal enjoyment of the champions-A,be it simle tweaks and overhaul of the designs,to whole new design and powersets,creative aspects like this are what I love about this AU

Nino,Alix,Sabrina,Ondine,Ivan,Mylene,aka Bubble Boy,Timestealer,vanisher,syren,stone warrior and braverator

Design- A,Nino’s is a very welcome change of pace compared to the sentient popsicle blowup clown doll from canon and play to his own personal music hobby,Alix’s is more heroic take on her canon form that still playsup the futuristic rollerblader,Sabrina and Ondine’s hardly needed much changing,though Ondine does have some tweaks here and there,like an additonal fish feature or accessories. Ivan’s livesup to the name,making for an opposing contrast as Stoneheart,while Mylene obviously needed something different,as Horrificator is likely more sentimonster material design wise.

Powers- A+,bubbler’s design was whack,but the powers as seen were definitely something,vanisher and syren’s hardly needed much adjusting either. Stone warrior of course,basically takes his stoneheart’s powers and applies them more to a heroic means.mylene’s of course is very suiting for her,an inverse to how horrificator gained more pwer and size from others’ fear of her,she takes others’ fear and inverts it into bravery.which as bee mentions,is very handy for heroes’ day. Alix’s powers of coruse,are more about taking someone’s speed to add to her own,rather than taking someones life to able to go back in time.

Theme- A,vanisher needn’t be said,but the rest are either simple but effective tweaks and adjustments on familiar designs,or something more original and memorable in its own right

Reason for Championzation-see above for previous champion pic set.

Effectiveness as champions- same as above

Personal enjoyment of the champions-same as above

Doll Angel,the Lady fairy Au’s equiv to the Collector,combining aspect of the Puppeteer akuma.

Design- A,it plays to the same soft color palette and elegant classy fairy tale design of Mari’s outfit as Lady Fairy,minus the butterfly motif. Which makes sense of course as the goal of this form is throw off any traces or connection to her secret identity. The wand of course adds to the theme,and like with her lady fairy outfit,the masks adds a nice hint of mystery and highlights as a reminder of her blindness in this au. Given this is her equivalent to collector,it does the job.

Powers- A. As bee states,it’s similar but different to puppeteer,as well as her miraculous powers. It has the personal touch of utilizing a set of items that are very personal to Mari,in many ways representing how much she cherishes and values the friends in her life,many of whom have been made her champions,so unlike puppeteer it doesn’t force them into their forms and be controlled by her. But rather uses the dolls themselves,who serve as her sort of,rpg companion team. The detail of being able to see brought her dolls’ eyes serves a nice callback to how as lady fairy she sees through her champions eyes

Theme- A,as mentioned in design,it plays to the fairy tale motif,but like collector it’s different enough 8n terms of ability and design in throwing off the fact she is the butterfly miraculous wielder.

Reason-A,obviously as well as helping out her favourite cat,the reason for making herself a champion is key to throwing off that feathered bastard off of her scent. After what Gabriel pulled in canon as the collector,what’s good for the goose and all…

Effectiveness - A. Like with the collector,it clearly serves its goal and purpose.

Personal enjoyment of the champion-A+ the sweetest design for the sweetest girl in all of Paris.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Other than a Roman god? No. However, my birthname used to be the family name a few generations back on my mother's side.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Today. @zebraljb knows what she did. That cliff hanger was not appreciated!!

3. Do you have kids?

Nope, and I don't plan to, but who knows what the future will bring.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Way less than i used to but yes i do.

5. What's the first thing you notice about people?

Odd as it sounds, their clothing. I notice peoples outfits before anything else.

6. What's your eyecolour?

My eyes are a bluish gray with a bit of green around the pupils. People tend to say my eyes are green or blue or yellow but they're grey.

7. Scary movie or happy ending?

Happy endings all the way. Scary movies tend to react with my vivid imagination and create horrible nightmares for months so no thanks.

8. Any special talent?

Does answering a question whilst singing a song and not missing a beat or running out of breath count? If not then I'd say drawing because i love drawing and am told I'm good enough at it to be a tattoo artist.

9. What country were you born in?

10. What are your hobbies?

I have so many hobbies! Including drawing, singing, reading, writing (fanfiction, my own stories, poetry, ect), playing guitar, rollerblading, swimming, sewing, and many others that I'm forgetting at the moment but will mentally kick myself for not mentioning later.

11. Do you have any pets?

Does my sister's guinea pig Peanut count? I named her, so that counts for something.

12. What sports do you play/have you played?

The thought of me playing sports is laughable. No thank you, sports are not for me! I don't watch 'em, I don't play 'em, I don't care about 'em.

There's nothing wrong with liking sports, it's just not for me. I am the farthest thing from athletic you'll ever meet.

13. How tall are you?

I'm 5 foot 1 and a half.

Art and Drama and Creative Writing (yeah that was a class in high school and i loved it)

15. Dream job?

Graphic Designer because i love art and design and have experience doing graphic design (my grade 12 com tech teacher had me be the school's graphic designer for a semester and i loved it) and it's really fun!

Birds of Prey Thoughts while I’m still Fresh (Soilers, Duh)

I love the lil animation to start off, very cute style

the narration was not my favourite, It’s just not something I enjoy anytime and feels like there was too much of it for my liking

plot was a lil all over that place, in the beginning, I get we have lots of characters with backstory and i appreciate that but the back and forth was tiring

I mean it was a shit tone better than Suicide Squad and it’s hour long introduction of its characters

still out on whether i like the writing on screen and that ehh

Harley was a delight to watch in this she really get the mood up with so many dark characters around her and the detail in her outfits was amazing

Dianah was impeccably dressed but I wanted to know so much more about her character and her mum and now Renee knows her mother? how did she get into all this exactly?

with Renee I loved seeing a more mature woman as a main character, she isn’t some uptight mistress bitch or anything’ she’s an on the ground cop that wants things to get done and I respect her for that

honestly, I stopped paying attention to the whole movie at a point because I was to busy daydreaming about dating Huntress

shes tall and has strong arms, and that crop top, and the lil social awkward moments ugh find me a woman like that

but shouldn’t she have a italian accent if she grew up in Sicily was it?

dear lord Ewan McGregor did a good job with that character - shout out to the writers as well - love to hate this weirdo rich turned mob boss

sad Cassandra Cain wasn’t as close to how we know her in the comics

that being said I love that a child had a background and good characterisation because so often children are so flat and terribly written

Cass even got her moment to shine when she grabbed the gun and they were all standing there like yeah she could stand on par with these women on day

can a fight scene be described as whimsical? because that how they felt

with Hollywood making superhero movies more “realistic” I feel like we have lost so much of the wacky hijinks that really make and separate the “action” and “superhero/comic book” genre

like the chemical plant blowing up like pretty fireworks

and Dianah’s canary cry propelling Harley on rollerskates followed by that rollerblade/car chase scene *chefs kiss* fantastically silly

i did love the sudden death of black mask at the end, like it wasn’t some dramatic Voldemort death, just bam and he’s gone like all the other garbage people in the movie, he ain’t special, like an anti-climax, brilliant

Tales of Chloix Chapter 2: The First Kiss

Authors Note: I want you to know that the Tales of Chloix is not set in chronological order of the events that happen. They happen as I gain ideas for the story. It is only five chapters long so there are only 5 events. The wedding may have been first, but that is what I came up with first. What you are about to read now is the first time they discovered the feelings for each other as two 16-year-olds. Enjoy!

10 Years In the Past

Chloe Bourgeois was walking down the street, texting on her phone as her short companion was beside her. Alix was chewing some gum, her rollerblades thrown over her shoulder as she walked with Chloe. She couldn’t stop herself from glancing over at her every few moments. The way her blonde hair reflected the sunshine, giving it a heavenly glow. Her confident stance, how she didn’t take any bull from anyone. Sure Chloe was a bitch, but Alix kinda liked that about her. And hoped that she could help change her.

“Ugh, so where is this shoe store again? They better have those Gabriel brand shoes for that lower price like you said or I am so out of here!” Chloe snarked at Alix, causing the girl to flinch.

Truth be told, she had no idea if the shoes were there. She just saw a pair that looked expensive and had a cheap price. Her real plan was to woo this girl, hopefully, get a genuine hug out of the deal.

Chloe looked down at her, trying not to blush a bit as she looked in those dark blue eyes. She had no idea why Alix was different than her other classmates. She didn’t hate her as much and actually thought that they could be friends. If she wasn’t hanging out with that loser Kim. She just groaned to herself, not wanting to be caught staring. One thing that she did admire was that Alix was a free spirit. She didn’t care about what others thought and was very expressive. If she played her cards right she might have been in a trio with her and Sabrina.

They arrived at a small shop, it was a one-story building that looked cosy and had a light brown exterior. The only window to the shop was a single large window that had a door to the left side of the building. The logo was a giant shoe with the text, “Right Sole for You.” The two walked in the store, several people inside as it seemed fairly busy.

Alix sat down on a small bench, taking off her shoes and revealing her bumblebee socks underneath. She wiggled her little toes to stretch them out, letting out a breath. Chloe covered her mouth to hide her laugh.

“Wow, nice socks that you got there. What did your mom get them for you?” Chloe smiled her little evil smirk, looking at her as she had her hand on her hip.

“Actually, yes. I wanted them because my favourite superhero is bee-themed” She stuck out her tongue and ran her way down an aisle of shoes. She looked back, seeing the blushing face of Chloe as she tried to process what she just said.

Chloe covered her face, feeling how hot it was as a smile crept up her face. No one had told her before that she was a favourite. Except for her father, but she was also his only child. She hoped. She just shook her head and began to go around and inspect the shoes.

Most of the shoes were nothing special. Sure there were some ones that were cute, but she didn’t have outfits to match them though. She grabbed a pair of yellow flats, putting the box with her shoe size between her arms. She looked around only grabbing two more pairs of shoes. She grabbed some red heels to be about 4in and a pair of black stilettos.

She looked up and spotted a couple, two girls who were giggling to each other at the counter. Chloe just stared, looking down a bit as she felt envious. She had never been in a relationship herself. She was always jealous of couples who showed their affection to each other in public. It made her feel lonely.

“Wow, those two are so pretty,” Alix said as she sat down, a big smile plastered on her face. “You know that blonde girl looks like you but older.”

“What! No she doesn’t! She is like forty! I am way prettier than her.” She crossed her arms and turned away. “Whatever. I found some shoes and I am gonna try them on.” She began taking off her shoes, throwing her socks in them as she slipped on the red heels.

“What, you got something about calling girls pretty? Because that would be pretty sucky if you did.” Alix crossed her arms as she looked at Chloe, her fingers crossed that Chloe wasn’t actually one of those people who hated anyone who wasn’t as straight as a line.

“Why would I have a problem with two consenting females getting in a relationship with each other? What is this the 70s? Who cares what your sexuality is. Just be happy but don’t be a super creep about it.” She finally slipped her heel inside the tight shoe and smiled triumphantly.

A giant smile plastered on Alix’s face, her cheeks gaining a hint of pink at this response.

She stood taller, being about 6’ tall now as she walked around the bench, doing her best to not trip over herself. She straightened her jacket, looked down at the blushing Alix.

“Damn I look good in these shoes. I don’t know why I don’t wear heels more often.” She said with a giggle as she stood in front of Alix. The red-headed girl looked up, staring up at Chloe as she gulped visibly. “W-Why are you staring at me? Do you think that I look ridiculous?” She looked down, balling up her hands as she scoffed toward the ground.

“What! No I think that you look beautiful. You always look beautiful. No matter what you wear.” Alix darted her eyes away, rubbing the back of her neck gently as she began to tap her foot. She felt nervous all of a sudden. Chloe just showed a bit of vulnerability and it wasn’t something that anybody ever saw.

“You...you think that I am beautiful? The only person who has told me that is my father.” Chloe looked down, taking off the heels and sitting down next to Alix. She sat very close, to a point where their thighs were pushing against each other. “Why did you really take me out here? I know that this place wouldn’t be able to even afford to get Gabriel brand shoes.”

Alix flinched at these words, looking at Chloe who kept her eyes to the ground. The tension around her was tangible, and it was only going to get worse. She needed to say something that will bring Chloe back to her usual self. The one she...fell for…

“I-I brought you out here so I could spend some alone time with you. I have been watching you for a while now. I have been wanting to talk to you, do something with you but you were always with Sabrina or you had your own thing going on. I felt like..if I did tag along then I would just be some third wheel. So alone was the best shot I had at being with you.” She took a breath to let everything settle in. Then she thought about the last thing that she said. ‘Crap I didn’t mean it like that. Well I did but she doesn’t know that. I better fix what I said before she gets the wrong idea.

“What I meant was-”

“A shot at being with me? A shot at being with me, Chloe Bourgeois?” She just chuckled and held her sides.

Alix looked away, closing her eyes tight as she felt tears sting the corners of her eyes. ‘I am such an idiot! Why would I say that! Of course she doesn’t like me! I never had a chance in hell to be with someone as amazing as her!’

“No one has had a shot at me. The only person who tried to shoot their shot was Kim. But he is...Kim. Not someone I could see myself dating. Though…” She lifted the head of Alix, who opened her eyes with a look surprise in them.

“You probably think I am going to be dumb for saying this. But I have watched you too. That day you became Timetagger was kinda horrible for me. I never wanted to see you Akumatised and it was my fault. But you never blamed me. And I just wanna say.” She let out a shaky breath, grabbing Alix’s face and kissing her cheek. She quickly let go of her, turning away as her face was beet red.

Alix held her cheek and tried to process everything that was just told to her. Was this really happening? And if it was she did not want this to be over. She quickly grabbed Chloe, pulling her toward her and kissed her lips. She closed her eyes, not caring about what anybody might say about this PDA. She was kissing her crush right now and she was so happy.

Chloe just went wide-eyed, looking at Alix. She didn’t take long to recover though, as she threw her arms around the short girl’s shoulders. She melted into the kiss, pulling her in close. After about a minute of embracing each other’s lips, they pulled apart, both panting and pressing their foreheads together.

“We have a lot to talk about don’t we Chloe?”

“Yes. Yes we do.”

The older couple left the store, the blond girl wearing a dark blue jacket with a white undershirt clenched her fists. She wore black pants with ankle-high brown boots. Her hair was let loose and hung to her lower back. She was grumbling to her self, shaking her fists in anger as she walked.

Her companion, a redhead who had her short hair tips dyed black chuckled at her wife’s flustered state. She had a yellow sweatshirt on, blue jeans and a pair of black converse style shoes. Her hands were in her sweatshirt pocket as she shook her head.

“Can you believe the nerve of that nappy-headed little twat? Calling me forty! I am only 15 years older than her. If she was only two years older I would have kicked her ass for sure.” She sighed and dropped her hands to her sides.

“Well besides that, did you like your anniversary gift my dear?” The redhead wrapped her arm around the blonde’s shoulder, kissing her jawline as she gave a coy smile.

“Yeah I did. It was nice to see our first kiss happen all over again. Even if I was super rude to myself. Little brat.”

“Well hey, just goes to show, that if it not had been for us being in the past, I might not have had the courage to go and talk to you on that bench and kiss you.

“Speaking of which, how does that even work anyway? Not like you knew that it was you when you were 16.”

“If time travel has taught me anything, it is you do not question it and go with the flow. Happy 5th anniversary Chloe Kubdel.”

“Happy 5th Anniversary Alix Bourgeois.”

RWBY Squiggle Scripts #010: The Beauty of Dance.

miggy97 asked “ I’m starting to think that Oscar’s love for Ruby will be similar to Uraraka’s love for Midoriya: he’ll be in denial of it for a while, but then once he realizes it, he’ll try to conceal those feelings entirely, because he believes it will result in pain for both Ruby and him since he expects to merge with Oz soon

@miggy97 That’s not a bad theory Miggy. I actually have the opposite hunch where it’s Ruby who is the one to slowly realize how she feels around Oscar but would be reluctant in pursuing those feelings knowing Oscar’s fate while combatting with her own reluctance to trust Ozpin again. A lot of fans’ impressions of Ruby Rose is that she isn’t the type to focus on romance and relationships. As always, this squiggle meister has a differing opinion. I actually do think that deep down Ruby wants that romantic life---the fairy tale that’s full of charm. She just hasn’t really been given much of an opportunity where she can express that type of interest, y’know what I’m saying?

This is why I shared this RWBY Remark once upon a time. As I said in my last response, Ruby has never had any romantic suitors. It’s hard to tell how Ruby would truly react in a romantic situation when the series hasn’t really put her in that type of scenario before. The closest thing was the ball back at the Vytal Festival but even then, Ruby’s involvement in that was completely omitted. I feel like when it came to the dance episodes, only her teammates: Weiss, Yang and Blake were given subplots as part of those episodes.

We had Weiss pursuing Neptune as her potential date to the dance. We had Blake be approached by Sun and ended up going with Sun. And while Yang didn’t have a date, she still had her important role of that subplot by helping Blake through overcoming her stress induced insomnia over Torchwick and the two even ended sharing a dance together at the ball as a result of their talk which I think is what sparked folks to start shipping them.

But Ruby. Ruby in the dance episode was more akin to a young child being dragged to a social gathering by their older peers or an adult. And since she’s not used that type of environment, she mostly just spends her night alone in the corner or in the company of her comrades when they’re free enough to come talk to her.

As a matter of fact, that is exactly how it was. Ruby just stood mostly in the corner for most of the dance episode. No one asked her to dance nor did she herself seem interested in joining the festivities. Till this day, that still kind of bums me out. All the more reason why I appreciated Professor Ozpin approaching Ruby and talking to her. I always enjoyed when Oz would approach Ruby with words of wisdom and his advice to her in V2 will always be my favourite moment between them.

I mean, we still didn’t get to see Ruby loosen up and bust a move with anyone or even by herself but…I guess you could say she was a little less apprehensive of the joining the festivities after Oz talked to her. Or so I’d like to think.

All the more reason why I’m looking forward to the Atlas Arc from V7. I feel like Atlas will give us a second opportunity for the heroes to have some well-earned downtime. I am still holding onto the prospect of the heroes reuniting with Team FNKY. Neon invited Yang and Weiss to go partying with her and Flynt back in V2 so I’m hoping the CRWBY didn’t forget that detail and we’ll get an episode of V7 dedicated to the heroes just dressing down and going clubbing in Atlas with Flynt and Neo.

Let FNKY treat RWBY and JNPR to a night out and take our heroes to FNKY town so that they can have some fun with FN!

I want another episode where we get to see our heroes change outfits again. Not just Team RWBY this time but JNPR as well inclusive of Oscar with a nice causal look.

Do you know what could be super cool? What if…Flynt and Neon end up taking RWBY and JNPR to a roller disco club in downtown Atlas or something? With roller-skates being part of Neon’s design, I figured second to raves, she and Flynt must enjoy going rollerblading as well and what better place to combine rollerblading with music and dancing than a roller disco?

If my memory serves correctly, I also remember Neon pointing out that Weiss and Yang should try out rollerblading since it’s super fun. I mean, yeah sure, she was only saying that to partially taunt Yang but…I’m still holding her to that. Rollerblading + Partying = Roller disco.

The CRWBY could even have that as a future episode of V7 and fittingly title it ‘Panic at the Disco’. Boom! C’mon CRWBY! I just would love to see an episode where FNKY invite the heroes out to dancing and rollerblading but while her teammates and friends are having fun, Ruby is rather reluctant about joining them. As a matter of fact, she’s the most abrasive about dancing. Even Oscar is surprisingly eager to join in on the dancing.

By my Pinehead headcanon, Oscar Pine is an astonishingly good dancer and even though he’s never skated in his life, he picks up on it really quickly and makes a positive spectacle of himself wowing everyone on the dance floor with his impressive footwork. He and Neon even share a dance at some point and while this is going on, Ruby just watches on alone in the corner. She’d been pretty reluctant to come onto the dancefloor no matter how many times her friends tried to sway her into it.

And somehow spotting Oscar laughing while dancing with Neon made her feel even more out of place. So Ruby just retires from the dance floor room just in time for Oscar to spot her leaving. This of course, encourages him to go after the Silver Eyed Girl. I would love for a moment like this to be done in a future episode of RWBY because it’s another golden chance for our Rosebuds to bond. Picture a scene like this:

JNPR and WBY are out on the dance floor with Flynt and Neon having a blast. Meanwhile Ruby is sitting out in the corner watching her friends enjoy themselves without her. At some point, Oscar skates over to join her in the stands after spotting her leaving.

Oscar: Hey you. *takes a seat next to Ruby* So…I…couldn’t help but…uh…notice you sitting here all by yourself.

Ruby: Yeah well…I…couldn’t help but notice you on the dance floor back there. Didn’t know you were such a great dancer.

Oscar: *bashfully* Thanks but…I wouldn’t exactly call myself a great dancer. My aunt was the real great dancer.

Ruby: Oh? *smirks amusedly* Was she the one who taught you all your moves?

Oscar: Well…not all my moves. *chuckles lightly* But yeah, Aunt Em and I used to dance a lot back on the farm. After my uncle passed away, it… broke her heart and... Em was really, really depressed for a while. She used to say dancing was what brought her and Uncle Henry together so dancing solo just made her feel...lonely.

I actually didn’t like dancing at all at first. Didn’t think it was for me. But I changed my mind soon after I saw how happy it made Em feel to have a dance partner again. I'd never forget the night I told her I wanted to learn how to dance. It's the brightest I saw her smile since my uncle was alive.

Ruby: That's really sweet of you.

Oscar: *bashfully* Hey… it's not that big of a deal. The least I could do after she took me in, right?

Ruby: Do you miss her a lot? Your Aunt Em?

Oscar: Every day. But Em's always been a tough ole gal who could take care of herself and she taught me to be the same way. But, being here tonight just reminded me of all those times we would just...get together and dance till the cows come home. Makes it feel a bit like home.

Oscar trailed off smiling to himself. But when he noticed Ruby looking at him, he blushed and looked away suddenly feeling embarrassed.

Oscar: *nervously* Ah---sorry if I'm rambling. *clears his throat and laughs awkwardly* I'm surprising chattier tonight.

Ruby: No, no it's ok. It's nice to hear you talk about your family for a change. *smiles at Oscar, resting her hand on his shoulder* I'm glad you're having fun, Oscar.

Oscar returns the small smile but then frowns as he remembered Ruby’s reluctance for the evening.

Oscar: But...you're not, aren’t you?

Ruby: *frowns sadly* No. I'm completely out of my element here. Why'd we have to come to a roller disco of all places? How is dancing going to help us on the battlefield?

Oscar: Well…dancing is actually good for team building. Two or more partners learning to trust each other and move in sync. When you look at it like that, it actually makes dancing the perfect exercise, don’t you think?

Ruby says nothing. She knows Oscar is right in his words however doesn’t admit it. She just continues to pout grumpily while avoiding his eyes. Oscar presses on.

Oscar: Listen Ruby, I know we're huntsmen trying to save the world but there's more to life than just fighting, y'know. We just spent the last couple of weeks fending off villains and Grimm and it's only going to get harder from here. Which is…all the more reason for us to appreciate the smaller, quieter moments like this, right? Who knows when we might get a chance at some actual downtime again? I know it's not your element but...I hope you can still have some fun at least. Maybe we can even dance together.

Finally Ruby looks up at Oscar, her expression incredulous.

Ruby: You mean…you and me? Dancing? You’re asking me to dance?

Oscar: *a little too eagerly* Yes! I---I mean…*blushing slightly* Only if you want to.

Ruby: I…

Ruby bit her lip nervously.

Ruby: *talking softly* ...I…don't know how to dance.

Oscar: What?

Ruby: I don’t know how to dance. I've...never done it before. Well...actually I tried it once. Back at combat school. But I didn’t know what I was doing and I ended up twisting my ankle and falling flat on my face. The guy I was dancing with started laughing at me and then everyone laughed at me. It was the most embarrassing moment of my life and I never danced again after that.

Oscar: Well… that changes everything. Now you're definitely getting up and dance.

Ruby: *shocked* WHAT! Didn’t you hear me? I'm not a dancer! I'll make a fool of myself!

Oscar: *enthusiastically* No you won’t. I can teach you how to dance. Besides if a 14 year old farmhand like me can become a huntsman, you, Ms Rose can definitely dance.

Unfortunately, Oscar’s eagerness is still not enough to sway Ruby who still appears apprehensive. So Oscar tries a different approach. He looks Ruby square in her face with a boldness she has never seen from him before. Oscar then smiled at Ruby, his hazel eyes radiating a genuine kindness and sincerity that left Ruby strangely fixated.

Oscar: Hey, you’ve helped me out so many times during our battles. Let me return the favour this time. All I’m asking is that you trust me. Please?

Oscar then extends his hand in a gesture for Ruby to accept his proposal. For a moment, Ruby just stares blankly at Oscar’s outstretched hand. She’s still very much reluctant but when he eyes returned to meet Oscar’s face still radiating that kind willingness, alas, the red rose conceded.

Slowly, Ruby accepts Oscar’s hand and he cups it gently as he slowly began to lead her onto the vibrant dancefloor with its multi-coloured lights and blaring music. To further prove that he was willing to accommodate for Ruby’s anxiety, Oscar moved extra slowly as he helped Ruby onto the floor, careful not to pull her too hard so she wouldn’t think he was dragging her.

Eventually the two managed to blade their way onto a nice quiet spot, far from the other dancers but still close enough that they can hear the music. Oscar stood facing Ruby. He still held her hand and gave it a small reassuring squeeze when he noticed that Ruby was still looking very self-conscious. It was admittedly little odd for Oscar seeing Ruby this tense especially since he had grown so accustomed to her righteous bravado.

Ruby: *very nervously* I…promise me you won’t laugh if I fall down, okay?

Oscar: *reassuringly* Aunt Em used to say this about dancing. The job of a good partner is to be a great support. If you fall, I'll just catch you. Besides I plan on laughing with you, not at you.

Oscar flashes Ruby a warm smile. Ruby had to cup her cheeks a little bit as she felt a sudden warmness creep up on her. It was weird but all that nervousness soon washed away as she returned to smile to Oscar. With Oscar taking the lead, the two then started.

And scene.

What do you think Miggy? Also, hey @xstonehill, would a scene like this work for you as well? I remember you pointing out Oscar reaching out to Ruby a lot throughout V6.

I think dancing---especially the Rosebuds dancing together is the perfect chance to help build trust between them. Part of dancing is about synchronization. Learning to follow your partner’s lead and/or move in complete unison with them as part of the performance. Dancing is a terrific way to build closeness in a relationship---be it platonic or romantic since it encourages intimacy. Growing closer to your partner and getting more in tune with them to better build on your trust with them which aids in the dance.

I think dancing could be a surprisingly great thing to have Ruby and Oscar bond over. We never saw Ruby dance before. As a matter of fact, we know of her apprehension towards dancing from V2. All the more reason I’m hoping the CRWBY Writers make Oscar a good dancer---or at least a more confident dancer so that he can help encourage Ruby to loosen up and trust in him to be Ruby’s partner; both in and off the battlefield

Think about it this way. Oscar has proven himself to be very good at breaking down some of the walls that Ruby likes to place herself behind when she’s attempting to be all nonchalant about the issues that plague her.

Oscar is always eager to reach his hand out to help Ruby. That's actually good since it's a nod back to what Oz told him back in V4.

As we saw in V6, Ruby's happiest memory with Oscar is the time he helped her back in V5. That dojo scene meant a lot to Ruby and was what solidified her liking of Oscar. I would love for another opportunity where Oscar once again helps Ruby through a moment of insecurity and gets her to open up to him.

Having Oscar and Ruby dance together and learn to trust through dance is an interesting way to help them grow as a team. We're used to seeing Ruby take leadership a lot especially after V6.

It'd be great if through dancing, Ruby learns to let Oscar take the lead for a change and trust in him. Perhaps Ruby trusting Oscar's leadership through dance will encourage her to trust his guidance on the battlefield. Not saying that Ruby doesn’t trust Oscar. However I have noticed some minor moments that made me think that Ozpin’s isolation might have soured Ruby's bond with Oscar. Not a lot but enough that it's a bit noticeable in her expressions especially compared to last season and the start of this season.

Ruby learning to open herself up more to Oscar and trusting him through an unorthodox activity like dancing, using that a metaphor for their friendship could be surprisingly brilliant if executed.

Plus imagine if, dancing is what inspires Oscar and Ruby’s tag team move on the battlefield. Picture this:

Ruby and Oscar are cornered against their enemies. As their foes close in on them, Ruby turns to Oscar at some point and says "You ready to try our new move, partner?"

Oscar smirks knowingly as he offers Ruby his hand and replies "May I have this dance?"

And just like that, the Rosebuds execute their tag team move which is literally a dance. A duet of perfectly timed movements moving in sync to an imaginary beat that only Ruby and Oscar are in tuned to. After all, it is their dance. Their Petal Dance.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know Pokémon did it first but…but C’MON! I swear if we ever got a RoseGarden tag team move and it's pretty much a dance between Ruby and Oscar inspired by them learning to trust each other through dancing for the Atlas Arc, happy would not even begin to describe how ecstatic I'd be to see something like that done canonically.

But as always, these are only just my ideas. A squiggly Rosegardening Pinehead can only dream.

Game Development 2 - Part Three

I don’t think character design is a particular strong point of mine, so I really wanted to take the time to assemble something I would be really proud to sculpt. When we initially began, most of the focus was on anatomy of the character - so we began looking up research and references of faces that we would want to reference.

I began looking at references of girls that were a bit younger. With the thematic of my project, I think this is an important aspect that needs to be communicated to the player - both through anatomy and through style. I collected some imagery of woman that had very “young” features like large eyes - such as Mars Argo and Frances Bean Cobain - as I thought they communicated this idea really well in their anatomy. Despite being 32, you would probably guess from her facial proportions that she’s in her early twenties.

I think that she has a really interesting face that would be nice to play around with - but at the same time, I wouldn’t want my model to fall intro the trap of feeling too animated against realism - so I’m really going to have to play to find a nice medium.

Another thing that is notable about her face is the way she sometimes applies her makeup - sometimes applying things like white to her waterlines to make her eyes appear larger. This got me thinking about the way that I will need to apply makeup to the model. While sculpting will be really important, makeup can really offset facial features, so I’m going to need to really pre-plan the way I do this long with the rest of the characters outfit.

So because of this, I began looking at different makeup looks and styles to try and compliment the themes I want to show in my game.

When I began thinking about the way I wanted to show the makeup and the outfit of the character, I knew I wanted to do something stylized and dated. The idea with the game will more be a retrospective on idolization of the past and times shifting, so I wanted the way the character looks to represent this. I began looking at makeup that felt very graphic and fun, but dated. Things that are very iconic and recognizable - I began looking at face makeup from the 60′s and 70′s.

In terms of the design of the makeup, I wanted it to feel like a nice medium between the past and the present. As someone who does their own makeup daily, I designed a few looks I wanted to try and then tested them out on myself. I thought that it would probably translate better onto a 3D model to practice the designs in 3D rather than in 2D so I had a better understanding of shape and what the makeup was doing to my features.

I think I liked the first look the most as it was really graphic and fun. Interestingly, the way that the eye-shadow is blocked in and the eyeliner is shaped basically creates a new lid, which creates a very large and unnatural looking eye. I thought that this would be really fun to play with. I like the softer looks as well, but I felt the more graphic look was more impactful - but most importantly, it feel the most obvious. In the other makeup looks, I was changing my anatomy with more subtly - redrawing my crease, blending and giving the look an overall more natural feel. With the graphic look it becomes heavy and unnatural, which makes the makeup easier to read in terms of knowing that is real and what isn’t when you come closer to it. Ultimately, I’ll just have to see how this translates when it comes to the final model.

At the same time, I also began looking at some of the fashion styles I wanted to replicate. I think with the ideas I had in the basis of my story - being set in California and kind of having a surf vibe to it - I thought it would be most appropriate look at a time period when this kind of culture was iconic - so I began looking for inspiration from specifically the 70′s and the 90′s - which are both iconic and unique in two separate ways.

I began looking at all kinds of things - t-shirts, bombers, shorts, skirts, patterns, rollerblades - everything I could to bring together the kind of style I wanted so that I could reference these for a board of sketches. Once I collected a good level of inspiration I really wanted to just begin sketches.

I often find when I’m doing these initial sketches I get really frustrated at the way I draw versus what I would like to accomplish. When I first began work trying to create a template for the fashion I found I was getting really frustrated, so I looked into some of the concept work in some of the video game art books I already have for inspiration.

A lot of them began with using silhouettes and colourless sketches to create a baseline aura for the character. Using these as a reference helped me create ideas on paper that were similar to what I wanted to accomplish from a character sheet and helped me feel more confident. It was really good to see how these ideas were started in industry and helps me get to a point where I wasn’t frustrated with every detail.

As I kept practicing, I finally got to a place where I created a template that I was happy to work from that didn’t feel too stiff or rigidly referenced while maintaining the seven-and-a-half-head anatomy that I needed. It helped me feel a lot more confident in the work and allowed me to create a wider range of designs and really experiment with different looks.

I wanted to work with a range of different styles and fits to the clothing, including in some ways that I wouldn’t consider wearing clothing. I think one thing that’s really important when considering clothing female characters is the fit of the clothes, and how you want clothes to wear and rest to meet an aesthetic. Luckily, as a woman (and an avid fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race!), I’ve had more than enough experience in this. When I did my character sketches, I really wanted to break down the look and feeling - so I went into annotation of what I was trying to accomplish with each look; why are some aspects oversized, why I specifically specify a men’s fit, why I used certain fabrics and what cultural aspects they come back to.

I felt very inspired by some of the reference imagery of the cultures of California, so I didn’t limit it to cute-skirt-and-a-totally-rad-top-I-found-on-depop. I also began looking at things like Chicana culture and other forms of fashion and expression used by minorities in California (as at this point, my character didn’t particularly have a set ethnicity or style).

Because a lot of the fashion was very graphic back then as well, I also coincided some of my designs with some graphic designs as well that I would hopefully be able to use. I referenced a lot of graphic designs, fonts, quotes and lyrics that I felt appropriate for the designs I wanted to produce:

These decals were intended to be able to be used in a few different areas if I wanted to - on shirts, as patches for jackets or for jeans and skirts too.

Some of these designs were intended to be for either a front patch or a shirt design, other were things like back patches for jackets and other. I also created some designs and quotes that ran off of the backs of each other, so that I could use multiple patches with the same theme in one outfit (”some things just change in a day” / “or even in an hour”).

I referenced a lot of Californian and surf culture inspired typography. I used typefaces from different cultures as a means of getting in that “melting pot” Americana aspect that I discussed in one of my previous posts - if I don’t end up using it, I’ll definitely use it somewhere - like on environmental signage. I do really like the way it looks up against things like the surfboard so it’s definitely something to keep in mind.

In the end, I created a big large board of designs that I was considering - each with annotation and explanations to the style, fit and design choices.

I then took some of my favourites and went into more detail - did a back and a front and really tried to develop my idea and sow what I was really trying to do with the fabrics and break everything down. I was inspired by some of the concepting done in the second Alice game, where they did very specific breakdowns of everything that was relevant to the design process and referenced everything. I also think by having boards in this style, I’ll be able to communicate my design work a lot more clearly and effectively and hopefully it will look a lot cleaner in a portfolio.

I then made a final render of the front and back of my design just for the clarity of having a definitive design.

To help me get the project on it’s feet, Danny scanned my face so that I can work from it as a base in ZBrush. I’m really excited to be able to work with the data and manipulate it. I’m not sure how it’s going to go, but I’m just going to fire through it and hopefully it’ll be an easy process.

Although, I have struggled with learning ZBrush - but I really want to push myself this time to create something I can be a lot more proud of.
