Brazil's real slips to near 1-week low in thin Latam holiday trade
Tumblr media
Brazil's real slipped to a near one-week low against a muted dollar in thin trading volume, dragging the Latin American currencies index, while investors awaited a key U.S. inflation test for more clues on the Federal Reserve's policy outlook.
The MSCI index tracking Latam currencies .MILA00000CUS fell 0.2%, on track for only slight gains this quarter, losing steam following the previous quarter's near 6% jump, with the dollar index =USD set for a strong quarterly advance, owing to doubts over U.S. rate cuts this year.
"Some Fed members believe that rate cuts can be delayed and that perhaps only two are needed. This puts renewed downward pressure on all Latam and EM which now face a bit of central bank policy divergence after committing to slashing borrowing costs," said Juan Perez, director of trading at Monex USA.
All eyes will be on the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, the so-called core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index data, due on Friday. Any negative surprises could further blur the U.S. rate cuts picture.

Unfinished Timeline for an Untitled Setting
Critique and advice is more than welcome, though please be nice about it. Goes up to about 2081 rn, though I plan to get at least another 50 years further in before I get to the time I want the bulk of the setting to be set in.
Timeline:
2022: First controlled break-even fusion reaction, followed by first controlled net-gain fusion reaction.
2025-2026: Increasing unrest in USA leads to mass riots outside the white-house. Sweeping reforms after growing revolts threaten to become a major armed rebellion. NASA miraculously left untouched, general increase in standard of living. Economic crisis narrowly averted.
2027: First nuclear thermal rocket (NTR) tested in orbit by NASA and DARPA. GPT-style language modeling declared “dead end” for self-aware AI.
2030: First Lunar base established under NASA Artemis program. Suez Canal temporarily blocked by a poorly driven cargo ship again. Evergreen Shipping goes bankrupt.
2034: Lunar Gateway established under joint NASA, ESA, JAXA, DLR, ASI, and CNSA. Lunar helium-3 mining declared officially nonviable. Radial detonation engines become standard for lower ascent stages, SpaceX Starship, NASA SLS, and Roscosmos Soyuz phased out. Drop in launch prices.
2034-2036: Additional modules added to the Lunar Gateway from SpaceX, KARI, ISRO, and Roscosmos. Lunar Gateway Collaborative Group (LGCG) established consisting of all current contributors to the station.

Asteroid mining corporations begin formation. Establishment of Nigerian Organization for the Development of Space (NODS). Ecuador experiences communist revolution.
2036-2037: First manned martian mission under LGCG, first human footsteps on another planetary body.
2037: Elon Musk assassinated. New SpaceX leadership declares plans for space elevator. North Korea collapses, Korean peninsula unified under South Korean leadership, becoming simply Korea. Indian nuclear stockpile secretly surpasses 50000 Gt. First baby born on the moon.
2040: Artemis base becomes semi-self sufficient, producing it’s own food and air from hydroponics, and water from mined lunar ice. Lunar LH2 and hydrolox production begins. Lunar population passes 100.
2040-2042: First commercial fusion power plants established in the US, UK, Australia, Korea, and Japan.
2042: A joint US Government and SpaceX black operation destabilizes Ecuador, leading to a corporate takeover of the territory.
2044: Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand form West Pacific Trade Organization (WPTO). Construction of the base of SpaceX’s planned space elevator begins off the coast of Ecuador.
2047: LCC completed at CERN. Mission for permanent martian base declared. Major economic crisis in China, intervention from several megacorps results in a decrease in Chinese government power and increase in corporate control in the region. SpaceX space elevator counterweight construction begins in geostationary orbit.
2048: Major revolution in quantum mechanics brought on by new data from the LCC. Lunar population passes 250.
2050: China splits into 4 corporate states, Amazon Corporate Territory (ACT) with its capitol in Chongqing, Samsung Independent State (SIS) with its capitol in Shanghai, Territory for Electronic Developments (TED) made up of Apple and Microsoft with its capitol in Yinchuan, and the Chinese Corporate Union (CCU) made up of several formerly state-owned corporations with their capitol in Wuhan and possession of the Three Gorges Dam. Any more thoughts about the whole Twitter situation? What do you think will happen to that site over the next while?
Hi Anon, thank you for the Ask!
By the gods, what to even say now?
I wish that I had the wit to voice my thoughts with brevity and good humor. The Twitter Musk situation is hilarious-but-also-serious, and alas, I am verbose in my thoughts and not very funny.
I'm not sure that Twitter will survive, if I have time I'll post more deeply on what I think will happen with that.
I don't follow much outside of USA Twitter, so I can see all of this going in a lot of directions, such as the platform being irrelevant in the US, while remaining utilized outside of the USA.
We can still use Twitter and curate our experience by muting every slur that ever existed while using mega block on shitty tweets to expand our block lists, but that's not gonna change the fact if Twitter survives—without Furry Musk-gland backtracking on moderation—then the winners will be authoritarian regimes and con artists. Both rely upon sowing disinformation, distrust, propaganda, and conspiracies.
There are many choice threads on Twitter that reveal the convergence of serious issues, and I don’t even know where to begin summarizing them all. I’ve included a list of URLs to a variety of threads that might be of interest. What's happening here is not a simple thing, it's bigger than one spoiled mediocre man's ego.
Content is king, and Black people did a lot of labor in creating the kind of content that draws users to Twitter. Michael Harriot of The Grio has some words.
Hark! A graph showing Mastodon new user sign up spikes plotted against new user sign-ups on Twitter
A kind and thoughtful thread by Gerard K Cohen about his team members. Their entire team (Accessibility Experience Team) was among the mass firings at Twitter last week.
Of which, the unsurprising firing of thousands of employees (not all of them whom are software engineers) potentially poses as serious legal issue for Twitter due to California’s WARN law.
Also in Ireland (though small potatoes I suppose).
Apartheid Clyde (thank you Black Twitter for this most excellent name for Elon Musk) tries to blame advertisers bailing on the platform on activists. Gets called out by the president and Chief Operating Officer of MMA Global (a multi-national marketing trade association) whom he had just had a call with.
On the value of experts discussing in an open public forum
Concerns from a Chinese dissident
Discount Stark is fact-checked on his lie about advertising
Profoundly bad business decisions. There is no 5D chess here folks. There may well be a case for Tesla stock-holders to sue for breach of fiduciary responsibility.
Being an asshole to everyone and then firing the security team (who were already pissed at you very likely) as you’re rolling out a feature that requires both financial and personal data to be transmitted and stored is beyond foolish.
Ohhhh, hmmm about those critical employees…
Some of the fired employees are here on work visas
Potentially disruptive for upcoming elections in the USA.
Listen, I work in tech. I co-founded a startup back in 2013. No job is worth a 9:30pm stand-up while your colleagues are being fired by a useless billionaire.
Does Twitter really matter though?
Learn to host your own content.
Make a list of your fave Twitter artists, authors, etc.
When parody is only comedy if it comes with a disclaimer
Comedy as a venn diagram
Use lists to get around shadow banning of un-verified accounts
Paying for verification reduces identity to a trademark. The average person does not have the resources to continuously litigate their identity, such people who are recognized experts in their field, journalists, government officials, etc will be the ones impersonated.
A must-read thread about Twitter and counter-convergence (spoiler, Harry Potter was a counter-convergence)
Faith and trust rely on knowing that people are who they claim to be when they speak on subjects with authority and expertise. Undercutting the ability of such people to verify themselves is a form of discrediting, and when that happens systematically to scientists, educators, and public servants, then we have fascist propaganda tactics on our hands.
I hope you find these useful Anon!
(Y'all give me some reblogs because I'm not sure if this post will show up organically since it has links in it.)

The trucking industry is one of the most regulated in the U.S. and Canada, which means compliance is always a top concern for transportation industries. This is especially true when it comes to cross-border freight. These days, border officials rely on digital documents to make the customs process smoother. Having the right software can make this process easy and reduce the risk of errors. Here are a few ways AVAAL eManifest software can make border crossing easy for your business.
Compliance Made Simple
To run a successful trucking business, compliance always needs to be a top priority. Not following the required customs process or accurately filling out documentation can result in lost time, reduced profits, and even legal consequences. Both Canada and the U.S. require carriers to submit their eManifests one hour prior and send their paperwork to customs brokers two hours prior to a driver’s arrival at the border. With AVAAL’s eManifest software, submitting this has never been easier. Our software is tailor-made to meet all the requirements so that you can cross the border without any hassles and be confident that you’re complying with all regulations.
Easy to Use Platform
Both the U.S. and Canada currently offer their own free eManifest portal. Unfortunately, these are difficult to use and not designed to support carriers that regularly cross the border. These platforms also don’t share data between ACE and ACI, creating issues for cross-border trucking companies. AVAAL eManifest is easy to use and reliable. It’s web-based software, meaning you can submit your manifests at any time and from anywhere. Our software also comes with 24/7 support, so we will be available to help you if any issues arise.
Tailored to Your Business' Needs
Not all trucking companies have the same needs, even when it comes to border-crossing. One thing that sets our eManifest software apart from others is that it can be tailor-fit to meet your company’s needs. Whether you’re a single operator or a multi-national company, we offer the greatest level of flexibility and have an eManifest plan to suit your requirements. We have a team of experts on hand ready to help you with all your businesses’ needs.
PAPS and PARS: How to Speed Up Your Cross-Border Shipments
PAPS (Pre-Arrival Processing System) and PARS (Pre-Arrival Review System) are essential components in cross-border trade between Canada and the United States. Let’s explore what they are and how they facilitate the movement of commercial goods across the Canadian and U.S. borders:
PARS (Pre-Arrival Review System):
Designation: PARS is used by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) to clear commercial goods through customs.
Functionality: It involves bar code labels placed on commercial invoices. CBSA agents scan these labels to determine whether goods need immediate release or further inspection.
Integration: PARS works with the ACI (Advance Commercial Information) electronic manifest system in Canada.
PAPS (Pre-Arrival Processing System):
Designation: PAPS is the U.S. counterpart of PARS.
Functionality: Similar to PARS, it allows U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to process goods as they cross the border.
Integration: PAPS operates within the ACE (Automated Commercial Environment) electronic manifest system in the United States.
Similarities and Differences:
Both PARS and PAPS serve the same purpose: facilitating the movement of goods.
The main difference lies in their geographical scope: PARS for Canada, PAPS for the USA.
Having similar systems streamlines importing and exporting between the two countries.
When Do You Need PARS or PAPS Numbers?
Any commercial shipments entering Canada or the U.S. by truck use PARS or PAPS numbers as the default shipping type.
The PARS/PAPS process involves carriers, shippers, and customs brokers working together to ensure smooth border crossings.
Here’s how it works:
A carrier assigns a PARS or PAPS number to a shipment.
The customs broker uses this number to request the release of the shipment from customs.
The carrier prepares an eManifest listing using ACI (Canada) or ACE (U.S.), referencing the PARS or PAPS number.
Only when both the broker’s entry and the carrier’s eManifest listing are accepted can the goods proceed to the border.
Customs officers verify the PARS or PAPS number to release the goods or refer them for inspection.
In summary, PARS and PAPS play a crucial role in expediting cross-border trade, ensuring compliance, and enhancing efficiency for carriers and importers.

The CDC has quietly released a new report confirming what independent journalists have been warning for years: the sharp increase in children’s deaths is a direct result of the COVID vaccine rollout.
The disturbing report reveals that over half a million children and young adults died within a year being injected with the toxic mRNA jab. Expose-news.com reports: The CDC report should spark widespread outrage and be on the front page of every single major newspaper. But instead, it has been and will continue to be met with a deafening silence. Despite the staggering death toll the report will be buried and swept under the carpet.
The mainstream media, consumed with working overtime to distract the public with propaganda on the war in Ukraine, alleged climate change and the cost of living crisis, has paid and will pay no attention to the devastating consequences of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s deception.
The public will continue to be kept in the dark, and the U.S. Government will move quickly to cover up its own involvement in the tragedy. With Dr Fauci quietly announcing his “retirement” in August 2022.
It’s all business as usual and simply just another day at the office. But it is also a shocking failure of transparency and accountability, and the people of the United States should be forever haunted by the lives lost due to the Covid-19 vaccine scandal.
Compared to other countries, the U.S. Government has been terrible at publishing relevant and up-to-date data allowing us to analyse the consequences of rolling out the Covid-19 injections. However, we have finally managed to stumble upon it thanks to an institution known as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OEC).
The OEC is an intergovernmental organisation with 38 member countries founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade. And for some reason, they host a wealth of data on excess deaths. You can find that data for yourself here.
The following chart has been created using the figures found in the OEC database. Figures that have been provided to the OEC by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). And it shows excess deaths among children and young adults aged 0-44 across the USA by week in 2020 and 2021.

In 1971, the USA unilaterally decided to abandon the gold standard and move to fiat currency in response to high inflation and their trade deficit. By 1974, the US struck a deal with OPEC to make the US Dollar the standard currency for global trade in oil. This gave rise to what is now known as the petrodollar, as global oil transactions helped prop up the value and stability of the US Dollar despite the USA’s own yawning trade deficit. This also gave the US power to print large amounts of its currency to prop up financial markets while outsourcing manufacturing.[...]
Sri Lanka today is in a crisis that is dollar-denominated. As a former plantation economy, Sri Lanka specializes in the production of a handful of agricultural products. Deteriorating terms of trade in the 1950-60s are the origins of the country’s trade deficit, which in turn pushed the country into to external debt. While the Covid-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine have certainly exacerbated the problem through losses in tourism revenue, and soaring prices of grain, energy and logistics, these external shocks have only revealed pre-existing weaknesses in Sri Lanka’s still woefully unindustrialized economy.
With de-dollarization gaining momentum, one could ask why Sri Lanka needs US Dollars at all. Why can’t we simply switch to Yuan? Why can’t we find a rupee-ruble mechanism to buy oil at a discount from Russia? Indeed, Sri Lanka has strong diplomatic ties with the de-dollarizing bloc. The former Soviet Union provided much of the hardware that set up Sri Lanka’s heavy industry in the 1950s and 1960s. China has financed and built much of Sri Lanka’s contemporary road, port and energy infrastructure. Sri Lanka’s biggest import origins are China and India. The problem lies, not in where Sri Lanka imports are from, but where it exports to.
Sri Lanka’s largest export markets are the USA and the EU. This is partly because the country’s only significant manufacture – garments – was developed through the Multifiber Agreement, making it uncompetitive and dependent on Western markets. This garment sector, while being a major foreign-currency earner, also represents a geopolitical weakness for Sri Lanka, as the country cannot maintain strategic autonomy without the threat of losing perks such as the GSP+ which keeps it locked into Western markets and the US Dollar.
Sri Lanka’s exports to the likes of Russia and China are still predominantly agricultural products, such as tea and coconut. To diversify its reserve currency basket, Sri Lanka would have to first diversify its export manufactures, which in turn requires a progressive industrial policy to develop its domestic manufacturing. Sri Lanka must boost two-way trade within Eurasia, for de-dollarization to be a serious option. Failing which, the country risks losing an opportunity to be an innovative first mover in the growing international trend of de-dollarization that is likely to drive the next business cycle.

Facebook's right, Apple is too powerful
Tumblr media
On the one hand, Facebook’s comments to the NTIA on Apple’s market power are supremely ironic. Facebook, complaining about excessive market power?
https://downloads.regulations.gov/NTIA-2022-0001-0145/attachment_1.pdf
Even worse is what Facebook is complaining about: Apple’s App Tracking Transparency update to Ios devices like the Iphone, which allowed users to comprehensively and easily block all the apps on their phones from spying on them. When Apple gave users this choice, nearly all of them chose privacy.
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/96-of-us-users-opt-out-of-app-tracking-in-ios-14-5-analytics-find/
Facebook says this cost them $10b (no wonder they’re mad). Nothing Facebook did — neither deceptive messages about why users should choose to be spied on, nor astroturf campaigns from small businesses extolling the value of submitting to surveillance — worked:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/02/facebook-makes-the-case-for-activity-tracking-to-ios-14-users-in-new-pop-ups/
So on the one hand, Facebook’s motivations here are straightforward. Facebook profited from depriving its users of the right to decide how they used its service. Apple gave users more control. Facebook lost money, and complained.
But on the other hand…they’ve got a point.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/06/facebook-says-apple-too-powerful-theyre-right
Not about why it’s bad that Apple gave its customers the ability to choose privacy — but that those Apple users had to wait for Apple to decide that they deserved that protection. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining about Apple deciding to protect its users — but I am complaining about Apple preventing its users from protecting themselves.
As far as Apple -and Facebook, and Google, and other large tech companies — are concerned, we’re entitled to just as much privacy as they want to give us, and no more. For example, Google and Apple kicked the worst location data brokers out of their platform — but left dozens of nearly equally terrible ones to ply their trade:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/03/apple-and-google-kicked-two-location-data-brokers-out-their-app-stores-good-now
Apple argues that preventing its users from choosing rival app stores is just a manifestation of the company’s sense of duty and commitment to caring for its users. But Apple, like all other tech giants, has conflicting priorities here. The company’s decision to take a 15–30% cut of every penny you spent using apps means that its motives are, at best, mixed.
As Apple fights laws in the EU (Digital Markets Act) and USA (Open Apps Market Act) that will force it to allow its customers to choose other app stores, it continues maintain that it objects to these purely on security grounds. Apple makes that argument, but doesn’t acknowledge the possibility that a third party app store might increase security:
https://www.eff.org/document/letter-bruce-schneier-senate-judiciary-regarding-app-store-security
The pretense that Apple objects to competition on purely altruistic grounds is absurd. Apple’s decision to take a 30% commission on in-app sales means that its own products have a 30% advantage compared to its competitors. Think of audiobooks, which Apple sells through its media player, and also lets Amazon sell through its Audible app, on preferential terms. The retail margin on audiobooks is 20%, which means that a competing audiobook store on Apple’s platform loses money on every sale (that’s why indie alternatives to Apple/Amazon all make you buy your books using a browser).
But even if you take Apple at its word and stipulate that Apple wants to protect its customers (which it often does!), the company has made it clear that it shouldn’t have the last word on this. Yes, it has stood up to governments that tried to force it to weaken the privacy protections in Ios:
https://www.eff.org/cases/apple-challenges-fbi-all-writs-act-order
But the company also caves in when some governments order it to weaken security:
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/17/technology/apple-china-censorship-data.html
And sometimes Apple weakens its security even when no government tells it to:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/08/apples-plan-think-different-about-encryption-opens-backdoor-your-private-life
In Facebook’s complaint, they accuse Apple of intentionally raising the “switching costs” of leaving Ios for Android, by refusing to improve Safari so it can run web apps that work equally well on any platform, and by blocking users from installing non-Safari-based browsers on Ios:
https://open-web-advocacy.org/
Facebook is a world authority on the abuse of high switching costs as a means of locking users to its platform, even when they’d prefer to leave. After all, that’s what Facebook does. Internal FB memos, published by the FTC, expose a parade of mustache-twirling Facebook execs discussing how to make leaving Facebook as painful as possible:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/08/facebooks-secret-war-switching-costs
Many of the proposals to address Apple’s inconsistently benevolent dictatorship of Ios customers’ apps have toyed with the idea of forcing Apple to include apps it doesn’t like in its App Store. This is…not great. I don’t believe in corporate personhood, but you don’t have to be a Citizens United megafan to worry that the federal government maybe shouldn’t be allowed to order companies to publish things they don’t think are worth publishing.
By contrast, rules that allow Apple customers to choose other stores, ones they trust more, are pretty great. The reason we cheer when Apple lets Facebook users choose to use some parts of the service (talking to their friends) but not others (being spied on) is because people — not corporations — should have the final say over their technology.
That’s true of Apple, too.
Again, it’s great when Apple protects its customers’ privacy. It’s great when Facebook does it (as they did when they turned on end-to-end encryption for billions of Whatsapp users). But the final word on whether a privacy measure is legitimate shouldn’t rest with Facebook or Apple, or any other tech giant.
That word should to to the public, through a national privacy law with a private right of action, one that sets the floor on privacy protections on all platforms, app stores and services:

Marketing case study: iM4U drives logistic business to the top USA companies
Tumblr media
Success in trucking depends on how well logistics and marketing work together, not just transportation. This specialized niche, a linchpin of global trade, necessitates innovative approaches to carve out a distinctive identity. One of our clients began with a single truck and a garage. They grew by treating customers well and being fair to employees, fueling their success story. A pivotal partnership emerged in November 2018 when our agency collaborated with them. Together, we bolstered their marketing strategies and harnessed their logistical expertise. The outcome? A notable placement among the top 5000 US companies, with a strong rank of 1910. This is all about demonstrating how good marketing and strong logistics can come together to bring success.
iM4U plan for marketing promotion
We created our marketing plan to elevate our client's integrated marketing strategies and attract more drivers to their company. The primary goal was to enhance the effectiveness of these strategies. The strategy focused on gaining insights into creating effective marketing tactics for a logistics company, including selecting appropriate channels for implementation. The plan's implementation encompassed several key steps:
devise a structured plan to boost the marketing team's performance;
achieve essential metrics;
analyze the logistics market in the USA;
conduct competitor analysis;
formulate a brand promotion strategy;
enhance brand reputation;
identify suitable promotion channels;
sett a marketing budget for the year;
craft a roadmap for brand promotion.
Concurrently, the marketing consulting aspect of the plan aimed to make important processes in our client's company more organized and efficient. This involved optimizing team performance and creating mechanisms to monitor departmental efficiency indicators, resulting in an overall enhancement of operational efficiency.
More information in our article “How to find your target audience for your business”.
Challenges we faced and how did we overcome them
In the context of the trucking and logistics industry, our client faced a series of distinct marketing challenges that required strategic solutions.
To stand out in fierce competition, they needed a special value proposition. They achieved this by highlighting advantages like quick deliveries and round-the-clock support.
Overcoming driver recruitment hurdles involved highlighting a family-like atmosphere and driver-centric policies.
To gain trust, they showed their no-damage guarantee and a track record of successful deliveries.
They managed to adapt to changing technology and cover vast areas by showing their tech expertise. They tailored messages for different regions.
They tackled complex services and followed regulations by using clear messaging and prioritizing safety.
Despite cost constraints, a judicious budget allocation ensured high-impact integrated marketing campaigns. Through collaborative efforts, our IM4U Digital Marketing Agency assisted the client in surmounting these challenges, creating a robust marketing strategy tailored to the unique demands of the industry.
Tumblr media
Implementation stage
We developed a comprehensive marketing plan and then executed it effectively.
Our strategy included showcasing successful deliveries through engaging social media posts and informative blog articles on the company's website. By using data-driven insights, we created personalized email campaigns that generated valuable leads. We met clients at events, used testimonials, and case studies to build trust.
All of this made our client more well-known, trustworthy, and appealing to drivers. We also enhanced the company's reputation and attractiveness to potential drivers, positioning them as a top choice in the competitive market.
These multifaceted tactics collectively positively impacted the client's business growth and success.
Results and achievements
Our collaborative marketing endeavors have yielded impressive outcomes and accomplishments within the trucking and logistics industry. Through careful execution, operational expenses decreased significantly by 22%, driven by a more organized structure. Notably, cost per lead reduced impressively by 30%, showing strategy success.
A year-long plan optimized the budget, while a defined marketing department structure improved efficiency. These accomplishments relied on consistent growth, expanding the company's scale by 1.5 to 2 times each year, even during US economic challenges. Additionally, a monthly influx of 10 new drivers underscores our prowess in driver attraction.
Recommendations for logistic businesses
In this situation, our campaign excelled by efficiently organizing operations, reducing costs by 22%. Additionally, we lowered lead costs by an impressive 30%.
From this case study, we learned valuable lessons, especially about tailoring personalized marketing for clients and drivers. We created and implemented data-driven email campaigns, showcasing the strength of our integrated marketing strategy. Equally important, this approach consistently drove business growth, even during economic challenges, due to our operational excellence.
Conclusion
The success story of a truck driving company exemplifies the fusion of marketing and logistics, fortified by a meticulously crafted and executed integrated marketing plan. By emphasizing swift deliveries, driver-centric policies, and damage-free guarantees, they stood out. Personalized email campaigns, engaging content, and trust-building tactics elevated their reputation. Remarkably, operational costs fell by 22%, lead costs by 30%, and the company scaled 1.5 to 2 times annually despite economic challenges. This case showcases the power of strategic collaboration between marketing and logistics, driving growth and resilience through a well-devised marketing plan.

I read Peter L. Berger's Introduction to Sociology a few years ago and picked it up this week bc I was concerned by how little I remember from it and also, from the 2-3 years I spent "studying" sociology. the first few pages were unobjectionable (except for a hint of contempt for psychology--he disparages social workers for "descending into the mythological depths of the 'subconscious' to explain matters that are typically quite conscious, much more simple, and indeed, social in nature") but I paused to look him up and get a feel for how his work evolved / is perceived now...and jesus christ! this is from a fascinating review of his 2011 memoir
Berger noted, rightly, that all economic development is a trade-off between traditional forces of meaning (community, religion, tribal family bonds) and that of increased material standards of living. His general view (where, he claimed, the raw data led him) was to see that while both the capitalist and socialist models of development more or less equally undermine and destroy traditional forces of meaning, the capitalist model at least delivers the promised material goods, a rising standard of living for the vast population; meanwhile the socialist model succeeds here barely at all or is even counter-productive, leaving people both without traditional sources of meaning and further impoverished materially to boot.
To put it mildly, Berger found no trouble lining up sources for continued funding of this work, which simply restated this basic formula repeatedly. It is highly doubtful, however, that any of this work will be of lasting value to the profession. In the first place, that we would even think of ‘socialism’ as a model for development is a relic of the Cold War competition between the USA and the USSR. It has little or no organic roots in the way people actually cooperate to create wealth. Secondly, the particular model, whether socialist or capitalist, is vastly overridden in the results it produces by such factors as whether or not there is an established and functionally autonomous and independent judicial system in the countries undergoing development (certainly one would think that for a Weberian, such as Berger, this factor of social analysis would be front and center.) Berger and his contributors perhaps have argued that an independent judicial system is more compatible with the capitalist model. However, I hardly think this could be empirically demonstrated. If anything, our current experience in the USA suggests that the highly skewed distribution of wealth inherent in the capitalist model tends to undermine judicial independence and autonomy.
The vast majority of that work is also unlikely to have any lasting value to the profession because so much of it was simply intellectual window dressing, academic fig leaf, for political leaders intending to do what they wanted to do anyway, regardless of what the ‘studies’ indicated, up to and including the use of economic coercion backed by military force. At one point, Berger seems aware of the role he willingly played during those years. He relates being invited by very well-funded sources to attend a planning meeting at a private location in Texas, supposedly focused on economic development in the Caribbean. It was all a bit confusing to him, because while the generous money was there for just about any study he wanted to pursue, no one really seemed to care what he chose to study, nor was anyone particular interested in the results.
In retrospect, even Berger himself cannot escape the sneaking realization that his real function there was to provide a known public name as fig leaf for a meeting, the actual purpose of which was to plan out strategy (clearly illegal) for getting funds and probably weapons to the Contra movement in Nicaragua. I am not impugning Berger’s motives, nor suggesting that he himself took part in illegal activities in relation to Contra support. I am saying it is unlikely that the comfortably funded report he produced as part of this venture will have any lasting value. I also must say that I would at least hope that such an experience would have led the author of The Social Construction of Reality to engage in some very deep introspection about current power relationships in our society and his own place within that structure. We might imagine him pondering the question, “If that is what they had in mind, why did they feel so confident inviting me of all people to be the beard?” There is little evidence here that Berger was led to engage in such introspection.
