USS Intrepid (museum) - Pier 86, New York City by Andreas Komodromos
USS Intrepid (CV/CVA/CVS-11), also known as The Fighting "I", is one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. She is the fourth US Navy ship to bear the name.
Commissioned in August 1943, Intrepid participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
In August 1982, the ship opened at Pier 86 on the Hudson River in New York City as the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Four years later, Intrepid was officially designated as a National Historic Landmark.

The flight deck layouts of the four significant U.S. Navy carrier types over the decade from 1945 to 1955 are shown to scale. From top are the Essex-class USS Intrepid (CV-11) of 1945, Midway-class Midway (CVB-41) of 1946, the never completed USS United States (CVA-58) of 1949, and the Forrestal (CVA-59) of 1955. Note that the angled extensions on the United States do not represent a true angle deck. They only served to launch aircraft, preventing landings during the process. The Forrestal deck, on the other hand, could support simultaneous launchings and landings.

"A practice space capsule on a forklift. The capsule was used for practicing the recovery of astronaut Scott Carpenter and his Mercury capsule as part of the Mercury-Atlas 7 NASA mission. The forklift and capsule are on one of USS INTREPID's aircraft elevators. The capsule is black and white, and the forklift is yellow. There is a large pulley hanging in front of the capsule, and two officers in khakis stand near it. Both officers are wearing yellow cloth helmets with thick, yellow protective ear muffs and goggles on top of their heads. There are other crew members in dungarees surrounding the cart. In the background crew members in various uniforms are watching the events. Captioned by photographer/donor, 'Practice for Scott Carpenter recovery.'"
