Hello-! this question has bugged me for the better part of almost a week now, and your recent answers have made it claw its way back into the forefront of my mind.
Lilith and Cobalt were part of the military before settling in Fontston (correct me if im wrong with the spelling) for permanent residency where they grew their family, yes?
Ok- this is a big one, I hope it answers your question. Sorry in advance!
**CW: mentions of Abuse, violence, and death.**
Yes. For about 10 years. They were in their late 20s (27-29) when they got married and retired. This happens about two years after the Fonston Freeze. So in the timeline the last time Lilith and Rose see each other is when they are in their 20's.
Mr. Marigold is hitting the girls as children and Lilith is the younger sister. She and Rose are terrified of what their father has planned out for them in regard to overhearing their prospective fiancés are going to be old businessmen and rather horrid people.
Lilith heard her father outside of his office talking on the phone about how "I have two daughters and I'm sure you can find a use for one of them. You may just have to smack them around. Works fine for me!" Then laughter.
Lilith tells Rose and they are horrified and make a plan to escape this life of abuse. Lilith is about 17 at the time and Rose is 18. Rose needs to find a husband and seeks out the help of a new fling in the form of Goudy, who is actually really sweet, kind, and loving to Rose.
They are smitten and head over heels for each other, but Rose knows Goudy needs to appear 'strong-willed' to her father to gain his approval for their marriage. So, in public, he adopts a very anal, and strict personality which we see become is actual personality at the time the fic takes place. (Really, Rose and Edward 'Goudy's first name' (Edward Goudy) trick Mr. Marigold to get Rose out of a bad situation.
Lilith is still a year too young to find a husband, so is put on a cart at night with materials and stows away with supplies to last her a while. And for her own safety, she is dressed as a man. It works and eventually she is mistaken for a soldier by a general who scolds her for losing her uniform and they 'adopt' her into the unit where she meets Cobalt, who at first is suspicious of her and doesn't trust her nor like her. Eventually she spills the truth to him about where she came from and the fact she's a woman.
He helps her hide her identity and eventually they fell in love and moved into Old Centry, where they were off duty and still active in the war effort. They have three children during this time, which is in the order of Jett, Buck, and the reader. Old Centry is burned to the ground and the family flees.
Lilith is badly injured during the siege of Old Centry but manages to escape with her husband and children. Having nowhere to go, Cobalt takes them back to Fonston where they buy the current land and built the house that we have in the story. The Fonston Freeze happens the winter before Old Centry is burned to the ground and Rose dies due to this. (Old Centry burns in the following spring.)
Lilith and Cobalt have one final child, which makes Lilith weaker due to a chronic illness caused by her injuries from the Siege. She dies a few weeks after giving birth to Whip.
Rose and Lilith never saw each other again before they died. They did write letters as often as they could to each other, though.
Point being, the Golden girls had it rough.

Author's notes under the cut (meta as hell, bear with me):
i. It was unintentional, but I ended up swapping the Mind and Soul Stones' colors. ii. I began with "Once upon a time" because I am better at fairy tales than I am at action adventures. iii. As it turns out, the Spectators' World has to learn to get on under 616's present conditions through canon while still maintaining stories of their own.  "You can wear the mask," and WE can be the Pre-vengers to save our faves from their terrible fates--we were sent a "premonition" (a movie detailing the events of 2023) by Heimdall.  These characters remember the Snap/Decimation, but it's not part of their world now (both facts are important). iv. If you notice any blotchiness in an otherwise clean panel, rest assured that it's probably just my actual tear-stains. v. Read the contents of my tag, Endgame Critique, if you'd like a generalized taste of the ideology & motivation behind "Fixing Ekko." vi. I'm using multiple non-MCU characters because Ekko represents the "Gate" (specifically, the one I use, though I'm sure others have also stumbled upon & used it before) for entering fictional worlds.  It is with their collective assistance that a kinder version of the "Broken Timeline," burdened by loss and inconsistency (wreaked upon it by a corrupt, four-headed god? lol, that's probably a bit too far), is restored.  I realize with all of these extra characters, this might not be a proper fix-it by most people's standards, but I needed to get it out of my system.   vii. I'd like for this to eventually incorporate pieces from other movies and perhaps even the comics--I've seen all of the former several times over.   viii. This will be my very first fanfiction/comic.  As such I recognize my lack of transitions because this is starting out as both a "Big-Picture" and a "Starting" piece. For this reason, I was hoping to begin a collab with any number of IronDad fans who wanted to hijack this story--you can tag your favorite fic writers/artists in the fandom if you know of anyone among them who might be interested. We could even just tack on pieces/snippets, whether new or pre-existing, that we'd like to see incorporated. Additionally, I can contribute the raw art I’ve created for this work to a different story, so long as a link is provided to this one. I'm also opening this up to criticisms and suggestions for changes.  To ease your conscience, any criticisms you bring up I'll probably agree with and be completely on board with changing because I'll likely have entertained them, myself.  It's just that, had I waited for this project to be perfect, I'd never have posted it. ^_^  The backbone to these works, however, must maintain that characters ("Key Figures") systemically removed in both Infinity War and Endgame be restored and/or kept, that they may, in their respective futures, be developed to their fullest potential--Loki-fans become Loki's writers ("guidespirits," if you're into that), Cap-fans become Cap's writers, Tony-fans become Tony's writers, etc.  Wouldn't want to repeat the mistakes of a corrupt, four-headed god, now.   If it's not our job to patch together the logistical mistakes we picked up on in that movie (and it really isn't), then we're free to spend our energy on preventing the whole catastrophe from the beginning.  @stark-eftychia  @and-i-am-iron-man  @ofhismerchant  @mcurewrite  @irondad-loves-us-3000  @antiendgame  @anti-endgame-ending  @kitcat992 @losingmymindtonight @parkrstark @keep-a-bucket-full-of-stars @irondadfanfics @starkaroos2034 @ellisper @dragonnan @spidey-art @renegadesandkotlc @irondadzine @celestial-irondad ix. I find myself a bit of a tactless animal at certain high points of each page. x. Any bear-imagery you might come across symbolizes love or prophecy.  In fact most of the pieces are saturated with symbolic imagery--if you pick up on it, it's likely that you're not imagining it.  I'm a sucker for "easter eggs." xi. I am eventually going to post an image focusing on just Tony & Peter (connected to this story), but I'm not sure when.  My IronDad heart is the central force behind this work, IronDad was the central force behind Infinity War, and Tony Stark was the central force behind the entirety of the MCU. xii. The Spectators (us fans) have multiple, slightly different worlds (collectively referred to as "Spectator Prime," while my specific version is referred to only by its gate, "Ekko") because we each have our own version of these characters & the stories we've built around them. xiii. There was another scene in Iron Man 2 wherein a plane was hijacked and Tony saved everyone who fell from it by linking them together.  I wanted to find a way to reference it to the Guardians' hand-holding scene/final battle against Thanos, but I wasn't sure how.   xiv. I'm a bit conflicted to begin with, having made this--I don't like feeling that I've spat on the hard work it took to create the movie. xv. I "managed" this comic with traditional media and MS Paint, so it's going to have a few sloppy features, as I lack the software to make a Proper, Modern Comic. xvi. I threw out both traditional and movie-based time travel rules and substituted my own (if it wasn't blatantly obvious, lol). xvii. The playlist is very earnest and dramatic.  Feel free to add to it, too. xviii. I didn't want to take all of the flaws and trials from their lives; I just wanted a future.  Both Tony's and Steve's endings removed "Future" from the picture.  "Future" exists with other characters, including the new heroes/faces of the MCU, but the human race is no hivemind; individuals die, regardless of their legacy.  So what's essentially happened in Endgame and movies to come, in my eyes, is not the sacrifice of one good thing for the sake of another--it was ONLY a loss.  My skill lies in creating a bridge for characters to cross naturally, should they choose.  I don't have any solid plans for them to live out.  I wanted to find a way for them to receive their deserved endings without feeling that I'd just abandoned the versions of them that got the short end of the stick for someone happier.  It would be unfair to prioritize the fretless over the burdened, but what happened to most, if not all, of the Original 6 was also unfair.  For this reason, also, the possibility of the MCU's future becoming accessible over time (to Spectators who use Ekko/believe the characters deserved better) also works with the idea that timelines, and even universes, can eventually be collapsed and merged, given time or similar-enough elements.  As long as the new endings we conceive follow consistent arcs, they will be acceptable.
Soundtrack: 1. Heaven's Not Enough 2. Towards The Sun 3. Go To Rakuen 4. Music Box 5. Scared Of The Dark 6. Airplanes 7. Imaginary 8. Unreleased Track 9. Short Hair 10. Somewhere Out There (Piano) 11. I'll Find You 12. Breathe 13. The Land Before Time Piano Suite 14. Set It All Free 15. I Dreamed A Dream 16. It's Over, Isn't It? “Rejection”; Chapter Three
NOTES: Once again, (Y/N) means “Your Name”. A heads-up for the future chapters, this fanfiction will have some parts where it mentions that you have “an illness”. This can be asthma, eczema, whatever. When I wrote this book for myself, I always incorporated my severe scoliosis in one way or another; so, uh, yeah. Just a warning.  ヾ| ̄ー ̄|ノ Enjoy!
______________________________________________________________
His permanent smile had lost all warmth to it, and you sweat nervously. Where would I begin? As you tried to find your words, the silence seemed to be eating you from the inside out. Minutes passed by, and you hadn't said anything useful to Sans. His “brow” furrows in slight aggravation, and he chuckled.
“if you're not gonna talk the easy way, you are really not gonna like what happens next, bucko.” Venom was spilled with his last word, and you finally decided to say something, anything, before you were skewered. “Y-you're right. I'm not from around here. I-” You sighed, and the whites in his eyes returned. “I know it's hard to believe-” “at this point, i’ll believe anything.” The hair on your neck rose, and you twiddled your fingers. “I know it's hard to believe, but I already know who everyone in the entire Underground is, was, and will ever be. Without even meeting them.”
His eye sockets widened with shock, but he remained quiet as if to say, “keep going…?” Burying your face in your hands, you planned carefully on what words to say next. When none came to mind, you just blurt out the first thing on your tongue. “I know about the resets, Sans. And I know you do too. Because I know you.”
You glanced over at the skeleton to see what he made of this, but his expression was blank. As if he's heard all this before. However, in a way, the surprise in his facial features made its way out by the shaking of his pupils. The small action made you wonder if he were going to cry. “I know how much you hate the timeline resetting, and how you always pray to Asgore that this time Frisk will do a Pacifist run. I know what happens when Frisk decides to go through a Genocide run, and how it's really Char-” “stop.”
You paused, and bit your lip. Sans was trembling violently now, and gripped his hands on his head. It seemed like he were on the verge of having mental breakdown, which concerned you so much that you turned to face him completely and even risked stretching out your hand towards him. He scoot away from it immediately as if it were poison, and you retracted it harshly. There you go again, (Y/N). Acting like the desperate scum you are.
His breaths were shaky, and obviously very difficult to take in. “how…?” He snapped his gaze back to you, and you saw a hint of blue streak through his left eye. “You wouldn't understand me even if I told you. That's why it's so difficult for me to explain; I don't know of a way to put this gently.” “just spill it. i can take it. i just want answers.” Sans tried to regain his composure, and slowed down the rattling of his bones.
“Are you sure? What I'm about to say might be… intense.” You sucked in a breath through your teeth, and you could see how Sans was bracing himself. He nodded confidently, and his cool attitude returned. “Alright, here goes nothing… Sans. Are you aware of what a videogame is?” He tilt his head sideways, and his grin faltered. “uh...yeah? why?” You winced, and continued.
“What if were to tell you… that everything you do and say is programmed into a video game? That your entire reality is already pre-determined and is used as an entertainment purpose for humans like me?” Silence. Sans remained still, and processed the huge piece of information given. “are..are you trying to say that our universe has several copies to it that people like you use everyday? for fun? that there are several ‘sans’ and ‘papyrus’s’ out there?”
You smiled slowly and nodded reassuringly. “Yep.” Sans stared right through your complexion and began to laugh. You laughed along too, confused that he was taking this so well. He stands up, and begins pacing back and forth in front of the TV. “tibia honest with you… i kinda already knew that too.” It was your turn to be bewildered, considering that he was warming up to you by using puns during a time like this.
“my dad… that's the one thing i can't remember. i don't remember his name, or what he did for a living, but i know that he was on the verge of telling everyone about this sorta thing. at least, that's what some people say. there were these timelines where it felt like the kid was acting odd, and new people just sprung up outta nowhere. the kid told me what those monsters said, and how they were ‘void of all color’... how they said to never speak of the man who ‘spoke in hands’.”
You knew of the man Sans was describing, and the characters that you had to hack into the game’s files in order to find out more of Undertale’s secrets. However, for some odd reason, you just couldn't place a name on him. “I know who you're talking about.” You point out, and rubbed the back of your head sheepishly. Sans whipped his gaze back onto you, and stood still in astonishment.
“you do? then who is he? what's his name?” Sans demanded, taking a step closer in your direction with every question. You raised your hands up quickly, shaking them to ward the intimidating skeleton away. “I-I mean, I know him! I know how I know of him! I just can't place a name, which is weird, because I know this whole game like the back of my hand…” You whispered that last part, and refused to look back into Sans’ deep eye sockets.
Disappointed that he couldn't get a response more than that out of you, he shoved his hands back into his pockets and glared back down at the floor in thought. “how did you find out who he was?” Sans inquired, and raised a non-existent brow curiously. Your heart raced, and mind pondered. I can't tell him that I was controlling Frisk! I can't tell him how I was a user of this game; he'd hate me! He has always been the one to ask Chara if she liked using his friends like pawns in a game…
“I'm afraid some things must remain private.” You simply stated, crossing your arms boldly. Sans took a step back, surprised by your sudden courage. He scowled, and pointed a finger at you accusingly. “that's not fair! you know everything about me, apparently, but i know nothing about you! like how i don’t know if you're a human from ‘beyond the surface’, or how you got here! how your soul is more than one color, and how you already know about the resets! it's like you're a god from another world or something; a being so powerful that you know how to manipulate the timelines in order to find out every little thing about them, and how to solve every problem within them!”
Your cheeks burned slightly from him calling you a god, but you forced the feeling to go away quickly. “Life isn't fair, Sans. You already know that. I don't even understand most of your questions either, and that's what I've been spending my whole day mulling over! Yes, I may know what will happen in every timeline, but this one is different. Never before has two humans been in the Underground at the same time. Especially not one where one of the humans has got a butt-load of issues like me.”
Sans groaned, and scratched his skull frustratingly. A idea seemed to pop into his head, and he glared at you menacingly. “knowing what has or ever will happen is a big responsibility. and with a responsibility like that, there's gotta be a great deal of power there too. so the question is-” His pupils went dark, and the atmosphere around you went cold. “-will you use that power for good or evil?”
He stepped close to you, and a blue light began to shine from his left eye socket. You started freaking out, and stood up straight. You tried backing away from the terrifying skeleton now approaching, only to run into a wall. “I-I-I don't know if I have any powers like the ability to reset! Frisk-” “frisk already gave me their answer; and depending on what kind of ‘run’ they were doing, it varied. so how about you?”
He raised a hand out of his pocket, and you felt your chest be put under so much pressure that it was like an elephant sitting on top. You pressed your back as far into the wall as you could, wishing you could disappear. Why couldn't you just say that you would never use your power, whatever that may be, for evil? Because you were Chara at one point, (Y/N). You chose to make Frisk go down the Genocide path and slaughter all those innocent monsters. Like Sans. You can't promise that you won't go down that route again, knowing you and your emotions. How crazy they can tend to be when you’re put in the right situation.
You gripped my shirt, and pant heavily. The air was being crushed out of your lungs, and the blue embers in Sans’ eye were growing stronger and more impatient. His hand was clenching into a fist harder and harder each second, which meant he was getting ready to kill you if you didn't give a satisfying answer. As you lost control over your own body, your legs slumped to the floor and wound up with Sans towering over you. You weakly gazed upwards to see that your soul was turned a royal blue and beating very slowly but steadily. Your head felt like lead, so you dropped it to the floor limply.
As if that were a bad move, you felt your soul get tugged upwards and slammed into the wall behind you. You were raised up to eye contact level with the short skeleton, and his eye was completely flashing now. He had his hand raised, where his telekinesis was keeping your soul in place. “kid, i’m gonna need an answer soon. papyrus will be home any minute, and i can't risk a possible threat living in the same home with my bro.”
He doesn't even care about his own safety, just Papyrus’s. You would find that admirable, except for the fact that you might be killed any second now; from either suffocation or impalement by bone. Making up your mind, you choked out a soft response. “what?” Sans grasped the front of your shirt, and brought his face so close that you could feel his breath on your face. “i couldn't hear you. then again, i don't have ears.”
You wanted to laugh at his pun, but now wasn’t the time. Obeying his command, you repeat yourself anyways. “I said that I would never use my power for evil.” Sans smirked, but didn't back off. “and?” You winced, and gasped for a breath. “And what?” He snickered, and winked. “and that you'll never treat papyrus poorly?” You rolled your eyes to the best of your ability. “Of course, your majesty.” You scoffed sarcastically, and he let you go. Thumping to the ground, you wheezed like an old rubber toy. You clutched your chest, not caring that your soul was back to its normal array of colors. He shoved his hands in his pockets, and his pupils returned to their normal appearance.
“good. because if you do, i will not hesitate to show you my full capabilities.” He shrugged playfully, but you could tell he was not joking. “oh, and by the way-” he strolled over to the couch, and plopped back down causally, “don't be afraid to call me that from now on. ‘kay, sweetheart?” He called mockingly, and you grumbled a “pfft, yeah right” under your breath whilst your cheeks lit up brightly once more.

Ten UNDERTALE Fanworks Every Fan Needs to Check Out
It’s February 15th, time once again to celebrate International Fanworks Day! Seriously, how great is that? Whether it’s books, movies, comics, games or television series, fanworks make up a huge part of their communities. This year I’m tackling UNDERTALE, the game that most people (myself included) fell in love with and whose fandom is still going strong more than a year later.
Tumblr media
Some of them have been completed, some of them are only partially done, and some of them have been forgotten. Regardless of their status, I think they’re special and amazing and I hope you will love them as much as I do. I’ll do my best to leave out any spoilers.
Death by Glamour
Tumblr media
Here’s a neat animatic featuring our favorite human and robot. Animated by Alyssa Gerwing, this video makes their battle look really cool, bringing the fight sequence out of the box and into UNDERTALE’s real world. You have to love the pacing and timing, which is perfectly in sync with the boss music. The facial expressions really give it something extra, whether it be humor or drama. What a stylish video! @walkingmelonsaaa
Papyrus Finds a Human
Tumblr media
This animation was an unexpected delight. This was not the cutesy video I thought it would be. With it’s mild swearing and cartoon violence, Mike (a.k.a. Piemations) created a brilliantly funny video. The voice acting is flawless. The punchlines hit home. Papyrus is the best. I can’t write much else without giving all the best bits away. Just go experience it for yourself. As an added bonus, I highly recommend turning on the subtitles while watching the video for the second time. You will not be disappointed.
UNDERTALE ANNIVERSARY
Tumblr media
This animation blew me away. I was a fan of iscoppie’s Game Grumps animations before this, but wow. This six-minute video depicts a moment I rarely see people tackle: how Undyne and Alphys met. It’s a bittersweet meeting when you really think about it, and this animation captures and balances all of the emotions involved: fear, hope, resignation, awe. The colors are gorgeous, the voice talent is wonder, and the music is beautiful. This is the best UNDERTALE tribute to date. @iscoppie
The Sons of Gaster
Tumblr media
There are many theories as to how, or even if, Sans and Papyrus are connected to W.D. Gaster. One popular theory is that they were created by the doctor. This two-part comic series by sansybones depicts the skeleton brothers’ beginnings: their time with Gaster, growing and gaining independence, and how the two bros become family. The black-and-white style–with the occasional blue–is very effective and looks really nice. I especially love Papyrus’ facial expressions; they capture his personality perfectly. One thing I do appreciate is that this isn’t just a Sans story. Papyrus is just as important and has just as much focus and growth. Sansybones’ depiction of the UNDERTALE characters is fantastic. Their feelings, struggles, and personalities feel genuine and sincere. It’s an emotional roller coaster well worth the ride. @sansybones
They Say He Shattered
Tumblr media
I’m a big fan of the multiverse theory. I’ve talked about it extensively in regards to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If you’re like me, then this comic is right up your alley. Emily plays with the idea of timelines collapsing and converging in They Say He Shattered, creating the best kind of mess. It’s a fascinating story that balances humor and seriousness very well. Each game ending results in another dimension, but it seems the very fabric of time and space has been broken. Characters come face-to-face with different realities or feel the effects of forces on their other selves. Some things happen out of order. Some things that never should have been are now possible. It’s really hard to explain, but well worth a read. I’m really excited to get to the bottom of this mystery. @theysayheshattered
A CHARActer Analysis
Tumblr media
Normally when we think of “fanwork” we think of art, music, fanfiction, cosplay, videos, and animation. However, this thesis bears recognition. Toby Fox created a cast of characters rich in personality and full of life. Chara is one of the only characters in UNDERTALE to be almost unanimously revered and portrayed as one-dimensional. They’re evil and hate humanity and that’s the end of that. Only it’s not. In this analysis we are shown every detail we may have missed. Chara’s story is scattered throughout the game. There are so many subtle hints and clues that most people wouldn’t notice or even think twice about. This in-depth thesis is by far the best explanation of who/what Chara is, who they were, and their role in the overall game. With all of this evidence, you may find yourself viewing Chara in a completely different light. @thefloweryfanclub
Never a Lovely So Real
Tumblr media
The artwork shown above was created by theslowesthnery.
Of all the UNDERTALE AU’s, the Gangster/Mob AU is my big favorite. I adore this AU, and this fanficiton was heaven-sent. Kaesa’s Never a Lovely So Real is loosely based on Hnery’s neat headcanons and spectacular art surrounding the Gangster AU. This story is told from Sans’ point of view as he tries to keep the family safe. You have all of your favorite major characters playing their roles in the operation, while a lot of minor characters show up frequently as well. I really appreciate that Sans and Alphys are science bros and have to work as a team. I normally don’t like a who lot of new characters being added into fanfictions, but here it works. Getting to know the rival gang members goes to show that not everything is black-and-white, especially in these types of situations. Much like the game, the “bad guys” aren’t always bad guys. One of the greatest things about this fanfiction is how much research and knowledge went into it. I was impressed by how authentic this story felt the first time I read through it. Kaesa did her homework and it shows. There’s mystery. There’s action. There’s romance. There’s suspense. This is a great work. Did I mention the Gangster AU was my favorite? @kaesaaurelia
Under Shield
Tumblr media
The artwork shown above was created by hamstermastersamster.
Here we have my favorite post-true-pacifist story. Under Shield by Fantasia Wandering is a series of fics told out of order telling of Frisk growing up and growing into their role as ambassador, as well as dealing with their past and becoming part of a family again. Frisk is given a lot of character and background, but it never seems like too much. Frisk is a person with big feelings and big thoughts, and sometimes they can weigh too heavily on their mind. These feelings, accompanied with the struggles of growing up, are relatable to everyone and make it easy to slip into Frisk’s shoes. Although Frisk is the main focus, some of the main cast have important developments as well. One of the most powerful chapters in this series is the eighth part: Penance. Asgore’s redemption arc is a prominent theme throughout the series. He’s not immediately forgiven for his sins by Toriel, or even himself. This in turn affects his relationship with Frisk. It’s a process that takes many years and the reader is there for each important step. This fic’s strongest suit is its stunning imagery. The environments Fantasia has created are painted so vividly. Any reader can picture the settings in great detail. Overall, this is one well-written series. @fantasiawandering
Blood of the Covenant
Tumblr media
The artwork shown above was created by donidoodles.
Remember when PTA Sans was a thing? Well, this is the PTA slice-of-life UNDERTALE story the fans deserve. Blood of the Covenant takes place nearly a decade after the game. Everyone has grown up–and it shows–but they still retain their character. Doni’s characterization is so on point. This fic has the most realistic high school you’ll ever find. None of that Lifetime or Disney Channel nonsense here. The history teacher coaches the football team, the PTA is a hot mess, and aside form a few ass-hats the kids are generally nice and friendly. (Is this my high school? I feel like this was based on my high school.) The story’s strongest appeal is that every character’s time is balanced and utilized effectively. This cast is huge and yet every single one of them has their time to shine. I’ve read a lot of UNDERTALE PTA fics and most of them are a lot of fun, but a common trend in those stories is that the human members of the PTA (Linda, Helen, etc.) are usually so cartoonish and two-dimensional, like their only purpose is to be ignorant evil villains. Here our antagonists are fleshed out. They have feelings, struggles, even arcs of their own. They learn and grow just as the protagonists do. This is a fantastic, well-rounded story. I lost so much sleep the first time I read through it because I could not stop. It was all worth it, though. I promise. @doniblogs
The Scientist
Tumblr media
The link provided leads to AO3, but you can also read it on Tumblr. The artwork shown above was created by hamstermastersamster.
This is my favorite pre-game scenario. Out of all the fanfictions I’ve read, this two-part series written by Pen has the best portrayal of Dr. W.D. Gaster and his backstory. The first part of the series, The Scientist, revolves around the life and times of the royal scientist before Dr. Alphys got the job. The passage of time feels seamless, from the point of monsters’ imprisonment to the end of Gaster’s existence. It makes sense and goes right along with UNDERTALE’s timeline. Everything fits together like a puzzle. I could go on and on about the relationship between Gaster and Sans. It is just so strong and told very well. They are co-workers instead of father and son as I’ve seen in many fanfictions. (I prefer the colleague dynamic, actually.) The audience can get a real sense that their bond teeters between healthy camaraderie and toxic friendship, eventually falling to the side of the latter. The second part in the series, Entropy, shifts the focus onto Sans and how he deals with the aftermath of Gaster’s disappearance. It shows Sans’ own decline; he is deteriorating into the character we see in-game. This story is as well-written and intriguing as its predecessor. It paints by far the most natural, realistic relationship between Papyrus and Sans. Their situation, their dialogue, and their banter is so believable. There’s something really pure about it that just makes me smile. This series, you guys. This series. @talkingsoup
So there you have it! I had so much fun making this list. I can’t believe I’ve been working on this post for a whole year.Shortly after I made a similar post about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fanworks last International Fanworks Day, I got right to work on this one. Thanks as always to anyone who read this. If you’d like to discuss anything you read here today or have recommendations of your own, please feel free to reply to this post or drop something in my ask box. Have an awesome day, friends! @undertale
