Smooth wooden phallus found at a Roman fort was likely a sex toy
Tumblr media
A wooden phallus found in a ditch at Vindolanda, a Roman auxiliary fort in central England, may have been used for sexual purposes, new research suggests.
Archaeologists unearthed the roughly 7-inch-long (17 centimeters) phallus in 1992 and suspected that it could have been used a number of ways, including as a pestle or a good-luck charm to "ward off evil." However, a more recent analysis using 3D scans of the object revealed that both ends were worn smooth compared to the rest of the piece, indicating that it had been touched repeatedly over time, according to the study, published Feb. 20 in the journal Antiquity.
The object is likely the "first known example of a non-miniaturized disembodied phallus made of wood in the Roman world" and was one of numerous items discarded in a second century A.D. ditch, including shoes and dress accessories, small tools, and craft waste items, like scraps of leather and worked antlers, according to a statement. Somewhere along the Limes Britannicus… 🌲❤️‍🔥🌨️
I drew this piece last year for my December 2021 patrons! It's of a Roman couple gathering materials for their Saturnalia decorations in Hadrians Wall country 🧡

1,700-Year-Old Graffiti Found at Vindolanda
Tumblr media
Archaeologists have unearthed an ancient carved stone with the image of a phallus and graffiti at the site of Vindolanda, an ancient Roman military fort and settlement on Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, England.
The ancient carved stone measures approximately 40 cm (15.7 inches) wide by 15 cm (5.9 inches) tall.
It was found by Dylan Herbert, a Vindolanda volunteer and a retired biochemist from South Wales, on May 19, 2022.
“I’d been removing a lot of rubble all week and to be honest this stone had been getting in my way, I was glad when I was told I could take it out of the trench,” Herbert said.
“It looked from the back like all the others, a very ordinary stone, but when I turned it over, I was startled to see some clear letters.”
“Only after we removed the mud did I realize the full extent of what I’d uncovered, and I was absolutely delighted.” Read more.

11 September - Happy Birthday Claudia Severa :-)
A sort of repost, but it was nice to see this famous letter in person at British Museum.
Number 11 is the Birthday party invitation letter from Claudia Severa to Sulpicia Lepidina and number 12 is an another letter from Severa to her friend. Closures are written by herself and they are the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman. (late 1st / early 2nd century CE)
London, July 2022

This is wonderful! Women in Roman Britain, and their lives also show the nature of the multi-racial society they lived in. One was a rich woman born in Africa, another was a British freed woman married to a Syrian, and Claudia Severa herself sent the Vindolanda Tablet (basically a Roman postcard) to her friend, inviting her to her birthday party.
