New AU concept just dropped: 1930s Pulp Detective Prowl 

I realised I hadn’t done any fashion plate mood board TF AUs in a while, so I figured what the hell, been thinking about this one for a while lmao 

Concept Notes: 

1) My grandfather smoked Wings Cigarettes in the 30s every now and then. Apparently they were cheap, lmao. I picked these because obviously, door wings = Wings Cigarettes!

2) The police vehicle I used here is a 1936 Buick Special! 

3) As usual, the illustrations are from fashion plates and advertisements. 

I picked a tuck waist double breasted suit jacket illustration for the full body image here, because the way the chest is emphasised reminds me SO MUCH of Prowl’s actual root mode design, lmao. The double-flared pocket square also reminded me of the wide set double headlights on certain Prowl designs. 

4) I cheated a little and used a wallpaper design for the second fabric swatch, but to be fair those ovular arch designs were very popular on fabrics as well, so it’s not too much of a stretch! 

Any metallic thread would have been VERY expensive, so it’s more likely that such a pattern would either have simply been printed in yellow/gold onto the fabric (rather than embroidered etc.), and would not have been reflective or shiny. 

Of course, my grandmother used to get cheap sequins back in the 30s and just stitched them over an existing pattern on any fabric to make a shiny dress, because sequins were very popular! Beading too. But these supplies were still costly, so most people only had one or two decorated garments. 

Men styled themselves for “fancy” occasions with tie clips, a pocket watch, and cuff links, sometimes also using a particular pocket square or tie/neckerchief for added style points. 

5) The top fabric swatch is printed on a linen-cotton blend; This mixed fibre fabric was cheaper than 100% cotton or 100% linen during the Great Depression, and these simple geometric designs were also cheaper to manufacture, so this is essentially a firmly middle-class affordable fabric pattern for the time period; Someone working as a police officer was in the marketing range for such a fabric/design. 

It wasn’t the cheapest, but certainly wasn’t considered overly elaborate, and likely would have been used to make a women’s dress or a men’s tie and pocket squares. 

This fabric could also have been used as “repair fabric”, to replace a worn down hat band, or to create a neckerchief to hide a lost button or stain on someone’s collar. It could also just be cut into a strip, hemmed, and used as a scarf or fabric belt. 

This type of fabric was also often used to make various items, such as jewellery rolls (to protect valuables with a softer fabric lining inside), curtains, coin purses, and so on, because you could get a nice pattern in large amounts for relatively cheap. 

Because it is a multi-purpose practical fabric with a very distinctive pattern from the era, I picked it because I think Prowl would certainly have a few handkerchiefs or pocket squares/ties in a fabric like this, for special non-uniform department events! 

6) Some more garment notes because I went to fashion school: 

-Note how the sleeve tapers from a wider base at the shoulder to a narrow fit around the forearm and wrist. This was to increase the illusion of a large chest and broad shoulders. This sleeve tapering also means a sleeve cuff wasn’t needed, as the tapering helps prevent baggy sleeves past about the mid-upper arm, and sleeves could be rolled up smoothly and flatly if needed. 

-The pant legs are baggy, because this suit was designed around the transition from zoot suits to the more commonly recognisable 1940s double-breasted streamlined designs; This style pictured here was actually very popular right in that time period, but World War 2 resulted in fabric and manufacturing capacity shortages, which limited fabric availability. As a result, baggier suits went out of style, because they used more fabric and were more expensive.

-Note the cuff at the ankle for the baggy pant legs! This was also a stylistic change from the zoot suit era, which retained the baggy zoot style trouser while allowing for a tidier look-- It also showed off someone’s shoes, and prevented any baggy pant leg fabric from being stepped on or getting dirty. (Which was a common problem with the loosely rolled long pant legs on zoot suits!) 

-The extreme waist tailoring is also a call back to Edwardian dining suits and Victorian men’s suit jackets, so there’s a clear stylistic influence there. 

-The double-breasted lapels have points that are cut fairly sharply; This is to ensure a sleek streamline appearance, despite the relative bagginess of the top of the jacket. The angular lapels create a visual line that helps hide the extra gap between the jacket and the chest, as the extra fabric in the jacket (which creates the large chest appearance) results in most of the weight of the fabric resting on the shoulders, which then naturally results in a fit that doesn’t rest flat against the actual chest. The lapels help prevent it from looking baggy around the mid-chest level when the jacket is buttoned. Very clever! 

-The tapering on the pattern for that jacket must have been hell to get just right. I’m assuming they made the pattern by working it out in calico first, then marking it on a dummy or model, then creating a paper pattern from the fabric pattern. In my experience, that’s the best way to do shit like this!

For @nonasuch‘s Fancy Tuesday, my Fluevog 7th Heaven Derby Swirl boots in Purple with Dots. As you can see, the soles have treads in the shape of angels (with trumpets!) and the words “Resists alkalai, water, acid, fatigue, Satan” are written on the arch.

for @nonasuch -- new shoes for Fancy Tuesday. Fluevog Modvog Ace Face in Snake! When these came out in 2019, I decided to wait until they went on sale, because as much as I thought this was an interesting pattern, I was pretty sure it wasn’t going to be popular enough to sell out quick.

“Don’t Gamble With Your Sole” is imprinted on the soles of the Modvog line shoes -- Fluevog puts different text or graphics on the soles of different lines. My 7th Heaven line shoes all have treads in the shape of angels and the text “Resists alkali, water, acid, fatigue and Satan” on the arch.

zoot how do you make time to write and be active on here? im trying to start writing and be more active in fandoms but its hard

Bby genuinely before the past like two months i was on a long ass hiatus bc i was so busy and i burnt myself tf out to the point that i couldnt enjoy my hobbies, dont try to force your hobbies into your schedule bc they turn into a job and a hassle rather than something fun that you love. Rn i have the time to be more active ans do shit bc i made the choice to transfer my degrees to a dif institution and pursue a new degree path as wel (im still graduating w 2 degrees, maybe 3 who knows) but i took a semester off bc i was so burnt out that i physically couldnt do anything and it was a bad time for me. I decided to take care of myself first and that allowed me the time to actually enjoy my hobbies like writing again or spamming the dash (bc i acc enjoy screaming into the void) and giving yourself the time to have hobbies is how you find the time to write. Dont force yourself into things and dont force yourself to write bestie, thats how i found my flow again. Also don’t be afraid to put yourself out there on your blog or in ppls askies bc even if you arenr active 24/7 i gaurantee ppl will remember you based on the impression you make and how genuine you come across :)) if you ever start writing and being active pls lmk id love to be your friend (off anon ofc).
