Nancy’s Feelings for Ace
Nancy told Ace that the first time she realized she had feelings for him was during the dreamscape with the wraith, because that was her official “oh” moment, but as a viewer we know she had feelings for him long before that, even if she didn’t know it. The first real signs for us were her obvious jelly feelings as she watched Ace flirt with Amanda in 2x07 and her mind immediately jumping to Ace when she heard the sentence “the one with the pretty eyes” in 2x08. But really, it goes even further back than that.
Nick asking Ace in the last episode if it was ever really only friendship and nothing more between him and Nancy got me thinking back to the very beginning. And to be honest, I don’t think it ever was only friendship. For either one of them.
We know now that Ace had a crush on Nancy in high school. So naturally, when she started working at The Claw, that crush returned right away (even if he also had a crush on Bess at the time). And we know Nancy met Nick and it was lust at first sight and she immediately embarked on a physical relationship with him soon after. This all happened before the show began. What else happened before the show began and it’s one of the first things Nancy tells us about Ace when her narration introduces us to him?
The smoke break.
Upon first viewing, it feels like an unimportant throwaway line. A piece of information that could just as easily have been left out. But it wasn’t. Why? Because I think that smoke break, a moment we’ve never gotten to see, was when Nancy’s feelings for Ace actually started.
Think about it for a second. We know that Nancy has always found Ace attractive. When she hears the term “pretty eyes”, she’s like “Who, Ace?” When she’s under the spell of a lust dress, she lets it slip out that she’s always imagined how soft his hair would be. In as early as episode 1x02, she’s placing a hand on his shoulder for no reason while she talks and she doesn’t let go until she’s done. He may not have necessarily been on her radar in high school like she was on his, but he certainly was as soon as she started working at The Claw.
So, now that we have obvious physical attraction out of the way, that smoke break. We know very little about it. The most of what we do know about it is made up from the minds of countless fans who’ve written their own fan fic version of it (myself included). But the one canon thing about it, the thing Nancy told us herself, was that he didn’t judge her for tanking her grades after her mom died. And how did he even know about that? Because she told him.
Nancy Drew, who at the start of the show was the queen of high emotional walls who didn’t like divulging personal information to anyone, divulged some pretty personal information to this boy she barely knew (and even though it’s never discussed again, there’s a pretty good chance that wasn’t the only smoke break they ever spent together). Meanwhile, she was hooking up with Nick and even sorta calling herself his girlfriend, but any time he tried to get her to open up and talk about anything, she shut him down immediately.
I feel like this is something that should be discussed more. The fact that she was able to so quickly and comfortably share stuff like this with Ace and nobody else is a huge deal. And in the beginning, it’s completely overlooked because Nancy’s love interest was Nick, and then after they broke up, Owen was next in line. For most of season one, she did not outwardly show any significant interest in Ace as anything more than a stranger–turned–co-worker–turned–sleuthing buddy–turned–close friend. But that interest was there.
And why wouldn’t it be? As I already mentioned, Nancy was always physically attracted to Ace. She knew from before the show began that he was a good listener and easy to talk to. And then early on when she learned about his hacking abilities, she saw how smart he was. Soon after that, she learned how loyal and dedicated he was. The boy risked his entire future to break her father out of prison, and he did so without her even asking him to. He willingly drank what could’ve been poison to prove she was right and to keep her from getting arrested. Every time she called, he answered. Every time she needed help or needed a favor, he delivered. How could she not possibly fall for him?
So, she did fall for him. Most likely even in season one. It was evident during the library scene where they were reading Ryan and Lucy’s emails out loud. Hearing Ace say things like “I think I love you too” and “I want to be with you, I don’t care what anyone else says” made her feel something, hence the look the two of them share afterward. But here’s the thing: if Nancy recognized that feeling at all, she would have shoved it down so far and so fast because that feeling was something real. Something more than she was used to feeling. And that scared her.
Nick was a distraction from the grief over her mother’s death. Owen was also a distraction from that grief, as well as from her break-up with Nick. Ace wasn’t a distraction. He was a friend. A confidant. Someone she could rely on. Someone she could count on under any circumstances. This kind of relationship with a guy was one she wasn’t accustomed to. And she knew that it could someday lead to something more serious—something she most definitely wasn’t ready for.
In 2x10, while under the spell of the lust dress, Nancy theorized out loud that perhaps the dress was intensifying feelings of attraction she already had but was repressing, and she said it while turning and looking directly at Ace. Keep in mind that (somehow) 2x10 in the timeline is not that far from where they were in season one, so to assume those repressed feelings started in season one is not that much of a stretch. And looking back, even starting within the first few episodes of the series, you can clearly see she has always been drawn to him in a very subconscious way. She would always stand so close their arms would almost touch. She would lean closely over his shoulder when he was on his laptop, their faces sometimes only mere inches apart. She would practically bump into him while walking side-by-side. She’s always had this unrealized need to be near him. To be close to him. And he’s the only one. I challenge anyone to find scenes that show her casually existing so closely next to Nick, Owen, Gil, Park or even now Tristan. You can’t. Because they don’t exist.
And this makes sense. Canonically, they are soulmates. And that would explain why Ace could simply see her make a volcano erupt in high school and develop feelings for her. It would explain why since day one, Nancy has had a bond with Ace that she’s never had with anyone else. And I know the writers say that Nace wasn’t the plan from the beginning, and I do believe that, but somehow, they inadvertently set it up perfectly for these characters to end up in the situation they’re in right now: desperately in love and desperate to be together. They are each other’s person. And they always have been from the very start.
To go back to what they were before would just be staying the same. They’ve never been just friends. And the sooner Ace can admit that to himself, the sooner they can get back to trying to break that curse and securing their future together.

Realized something while being very normal about nace gifsets - practically the only times Nancy can keep her distance from Ace are the times when her self worth is lowest. Ace beats himself up for not living up to the Ideal Boyfriend For Nancy he has invented in his head and she denies herself his warmth and comfort for not living up to the Ideal Nancy she knows he sees in her and I just 😭
“Very normal” you say? Here is my “very normal” response, complete with a cut because it got long 🥺🤷‍♀️ They make me insane, what of it?
I’m assuming these thoughts are inspired by that 3x01 moment I reblogged and I think it’s so interesting that you use the phrase “keep her distance”, because as you said that, all I can think about is the difference between physical distance and emotional distance.
Tumblr media
Nancy’s always touching Ace. That’s a fact, and I have long been much feral about the *prolonged* shoulder touch. And I think in terms of physical distance, you are absolutely correct. Nancy touches Ace when she’s in control—she’s in the middle of solving a case, she has a question or a direction, and she’s acting on it. Shoulder touches like 1x02, 1x15, 1x18, 2x15 etc. come to mind.
Tumblr media
It’s a bit of an inverse relationship: Physical distance decreases when emotional distance increases. Physical distance increases when emotional distance decreases.
We see this in the times when Nancy is emotionally vulnerable. When she’s more emotionally open—that emotional distance is decreasing/she’s more emotionally intimate—that’s when she keeps her distance physically. In 3x01 when Ace steps toward her, she pulls away, or how they stand apart and just head tilt during ‘If I find the words, I will share them with you’, and the 3x05 hallway conversation where Nancy opens up that she feels it’s her fault about Trott dying. Think about her careful distance from him in 3x04 and 3x12—that emotional intimacy is increasing so she’s keeping her distance physically. And of course, in 2x01, they way they circle around each other in ‘Just because I’m mad at you, doesn’t mean I want to lose you.’
Tumblr media
And I think this plays into your comment about her “denying herself his warmth and comfort”. I think it’s less about her feeling that she doesn’t live up to his ideal of her, but that she feels like she doesn’t live up to what she would like herself to be—like you said, when her self-worth is lowest. And I think she knows that were she to touch him, were she to lean in and receive that comfort, allow herself to receive that comfort, it would put her so fully over the edge that she would crumble. (And as much as she has earned and needs and deserves a moment to crumble, Nancy and I both agree that she maybe doesn’t really have time for that right now, or just wouldn’t allow herself to do that )
So she compartmentalizes, and almost prioritizes her emotional need over her physical one (which like!!! That’s huge for her!!!). Like in 3x12 when Ace says ‘You’re not alone in this’ and the tension just drains from her. She needs the emotional support, so she holds back the physical. And when she seeks him out emotionally—‘About what you told me last night?’/‘I’ve been avoiding talking to you’—she keeps her distance physically. She can’t handle both, so she chooses.
Tumblr media
(The AU is really the only moment that we see both—‘I was gonna tell you something’ combined with her reaching for his hand—she is both physically and emotionally intimate, which is a huge moment for Nancy and her relationship with Ace but perhaps more importantly a huge moment for Nancy and her character development as a whole. And thus even more depressing that it ISN’T REAL)
Tumblr media
Interestingly, I feel like in those moments when she is physical, it’s not really a conscious choice, it’s just how she is around him. It’s her baseline, she doesn’t even think about it. It’s only when that emotional intimacy comes into play that she has to balance it a little in order to keep it together.
Which makes it perhaps even more interesting to compare (contrast?) this with the big hugs from 2x12/3x10, because Nancy is decidedly not in control at those moments. She’s in that rapid fall of relief after being scared out of her mind that she was going to lose him and so she just acts.
Tumblr media
On the surface it looks like a moment of increased emotional intimacy, which should equal decreased physical intimacy, but actually I would argue that the emotional intimacy isn’t that high because Nancy is so firmly in denial about her feelings and/or being held back by the wraith. Therefore, it’s a bit of an exception to the rule, but emotionally she still feels in that ‘safe zone’ so she feels comfortable embracing him. I would also argue that these moments are mostly about Ace and not about Nancy’s feelings much at all. It’s about him and his safety, and so the physicality is her natural response.
Now let’s talk about the flip side that is Ace. You talk about his wanting to be the “Ideal Boyfriend for Nancy”, (which he so is, even if he doesn’t see it!) and Ace is honestly more physical in the moments when Nancy is more vulnerable! He doesn’t touch her as often, obviously, but when he does, it’s at significant moments: Protecting her in the Whisper box, or in 3x01, when the whole town is basically putting the pressure on her to solve these murders (Darlene, ILY, but give my girl a break), he touches her back and says ‘Let’s get out of here’. He touches her back again in 3x05 when she thinks it’s her fault that Trott is dead, and in 3x07, her arm/leg when she’s stressed in the car and his touch calms her down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps the most important is 2x18 AS A WHOLE. He grabs her arm/elbow to comfort and reassure her after Gil leaves, holds her up getting in/out of Florence (drives her to NY, *alone*), pulls her up in the woods, holds her hand, rubs her back, and just generally acts like her concerned boyfriend. That episode is arguably when Nancy is her most vulnerable—physically, mentally, emotionally—and Ace steps in to greatly pick up that slack and meet her needs.
Tumblr media
(And Nancy leans in and allows it because she physically can’t fight it. She desperately needs it.)
Ace really just continually increases his support for Nancy as the seasons progress, generally through acts of service/words, but also through his touch! Sparing but very significant!
So perhaps our equation is: When Nancy’s emotional intimacy increases, her physical intimacy decreases, and in response Ace’s physical intimacy increases.
They provide each other that balance, and always read what the other needs so they can fill that gap.
Basically they are perfect and they should just let themselves love each other and be loved. (All my love to @bethanyactually for meeting all of my sudden screenshot needs 😘)

I am curious to see if there is any interest in the continuation of this series. I left off at 3x01 and due to my complicated feelings regarding this show, I haven’t had much motivation to finish. However, if enough people want it, I will keep going…especially since I’m a completionist at heart. I really need to make this decision soon in order to catch up before S4. I will leave this poll up for one week. Feel free to reblog this post if you want. Thank you for your support!

15x05 I can’t decide if the “Dean looks way older now” jokes are a double joke, because it’s clearly Jared who looks different/older playing Sam in 2019 than he did in 2005, or if because Dean is the more comedic character they used him for this joke despite Jensen looking more similar to his 2005 self. Again, they’re going for the old school references in bringing back Ford and Hamill as alias, pulling from 1x02 (which isn’t technically a werewolf ep but features a creature similar to it, and one they were right not to reuse and use werewolves instead).
We’ve got three dark mirrors for Sam & Dean in this ep – two dreams from Sam, first of Dean drying to kill Lucifer!Sam with the colt, failing, and Lucifer!Sam killing him; then demon/MoC!Dean killing Sam, and then the werewolf brothers, who have taken to killing humans, and eventually ending in a murder suicide, as the younger bro, tormented by his and his brother’s killing of people, kill his older bro and then himself. Given the discussion of the werewolf bros as “foreshadowing,” there’s also perhaaaps a link to 15x17, in the older bro werewolf being the one who wanted to kill people/wouldn’t stop, and being taken out by his younger bro, and then Dean being willing to sacrifice everything & everyone to kill Chuck… except, ultimately, Sam, who convinces him to stand down and ‘stops him’ without having to kill him. Or perhaps linking to Kripke’s “Sam goes dark, Dean has to hunt him down” ending which one could imagine ending in a murder-suicide, if they’d wanted to go the really tragic route.
Lilith’s return – and the first person to be killed through the randomly stabbed through the back this season, pretty sure. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say she acts as a dark foil to Dean in the ep? Dean’s worst impulses are often brought out by his following the script, being the unquestioning loyal soldier, similar to how Lilith is still following Chuck’s script even though she hates him. (They even get somewhat similar cuts on their cheeks.)
LILITH Wouldn’t it be great if everything was just planned out for you? [She laughs.] DEAN Let me guess, one of Chuck’s lines? LILITH Word for word. God… he is not exactly Shakespeare. He’s more of a low-rent Dean Koontz. I had to listen to his whole, quote “writing philosophy”. And his very weird, very pervy obsession with you. Then it always ends the same. One brother killing the other. I mean, this world… he could’ve ended it in so many ways, and… he likes that one. You know, I guess that’s why you had to see the werewolf brothers die the way they did, ‘cause… foreshadowing.
I thought the “pervy obsession with you” line was going to refer to both Sam and Dean, but the way it’s played it definitely sounds like Lilith is referring specifically to Dean. The ‘Dean gets creeped on by quasi-mentor/father figures’ thread drops off almost entirely in Dabb’s seasons so it’s curious to see it pop up now, although given this ep was written by Yockey, who joined in S12, I’m hesitant to declare it’s intentional. If I had to guess, it would be more that it’s balancing out the ‘Dean looks old’ jokes at the beginning, as well as just making Chuck seem weird & obsessive. (Like the awkward, invasive fans who are obsessively attracted to Jensen/Jared/J2? Idk how many were around by this point in this show but the writers had to be somewhat aware of them historically.) We’ll see if there’s more of this thread thru the rest of the season tho.
SAM Where’s Chuck? LILITH Why would I ever tell you anything? SAM Because I’ve killed you before… [he takes out the demon blade.] and I can do it again. LILITH See, you keep saying that, but you killed me because I let you. Now I’m feeling… less generous. [LILITH’s eyes flash white. The room starts to shake as lights start breaking and falling.]
This dialogue isn’t a retcon per se, as S4 implies that Lilith knew all along she was the last seal, but it certainly does give a certain... framing to Sam and his actions in S4. Definitely an implicit passivity in Lilith “letting” Sam kill her.

There is no way that Matthew Crawley died at the end of the S3CS. There are several reasons for this.
Knowing Matthew's character, and given what happened to Sybil, he'd have worried himself sick about his Mary all the way back from Duneagle. I mean, he literally saw Sybil DIE right in front of his eyes. Childbirth was still risky, even in 1921 - surely he'd know the possible life-threatening dangers that might occur even after the birth of the baby, such as haemorrhage? There's also the fact that Clarkson helped Mary give birth. He misdiagnosed Matthew's spinal injury, and misdiagnosed Lavinia. Matthew certainly wouldn't have wanted to take any chances with his wife's health. Why would he ever leave her?
2. The hospital at Downton HAD A TELEPHONE. Carson tells Anna earlier in the episode "if you need anything at all, just telephone". At another point, Mary tells Isobel "We need to ring Carson" or something along those lines. This clearly points to a telephone being installed at the hospital. Any normal person with common sense (and Matthew is certainly that) would simply have gone down to use the hospital telephone and called the family at the Abbey, asking them to come to the hospital.
3. Thirdly, the family has TWO cars, as seen in a previous episode. It makes no sense for Matthew to go all the way back and bring them back with him, because his AC Six does not fit more than three people at most, including the driver.
4. Matthew tells Mary, "I've sent Mother to keep them at bay." That means Isobel is at Downton, and the family already KNOWS Mary has given birth to a baby boy. Where is the sense in Matthew driving back to the Abbey to excitedly announce the news to them if everyone already knows?
5. Matthew, as we know, has a guilt complex. He's hard on himself. He has trouble forgiving himself even when things are not his fault. In 1x02, when he realises he's been depriving Molesley of his purpose in life, Matthew immediately rectifies it by asking him to attach his cufflinks. He tries to make amends for his mistakes. Here, Matthew has just let his pregnant wife travel all alone from Scotland back to Downton, and give birth without him. Anything might have happened to her. It's inevitable that Sybil's death would have traumatised him, and he would have feared the same thing happening to his own wife. It's only natural. Presumably, he has been berating himself all the way home for letting her go without him. To make amends for that, it's only logical for him to refuse to leave her side, given the kind of person he is.
6. To think that Matthew could bear to leave his wife and son after about five minutes of them is to underestimate his love for them. This is a man who spent four years of hell in the war while dealing with his broken heart, and then suffered a horrific injury, and was then told he could never have children, leaving him depressed for months. After he married Mary, doubts of their ability to have children still relentlessly plagued him since he blamed himself. After everything Matthew and Mary have been through together, George is a positive miracle, when not so very long ago Matthew thought he would never be a father. Any new father would want to stay with his family. There's no question about how incredibly devoted Matthew is to his wife and son.
