I asked ChatGPT to
"Write a song that the character Davey would sing by himself in the Newsies broadway version"
Verse 1: I'm just a newsie, living day by day Trying to make a dime, chasing headlines away I've got a dream, that one day I'll be free From the streets, where I'm just another face to see
Chorus: I'm a newsie, with a pen and a heart I'll write my own story, and make a brand new start I'll make a name, that they'll all know I'm Davey, and this is my show
Verse 2: I've seen the world, through the eyes of a child The struggles and the pain, the laughter and the smiles I've got a fire burning, deep inside my soul I'll fight for what's right, and make my story whole
Chorus: I'm a newsie, with a pen and a heart I'll write my own story, and make a brand new start I'll make a name, that they'll all know I'm Davey, and this is my show
Bridge: I'll break the chains, and I'll rise above I'll make a stand, for the ones I love I'll sing my song, and I'll shout it loud I'm Davey, and I won't back down
Chorus: I'm a newsie, with a pen and a heart I'll write my own story, and make a brand new start I'll make a name, that they'll all know I'm Davey, and this is my show
Outro: I'll keep on fighting, till the end of the line I'll make my mark, and shine I'm Davey, and this is my time
Note: The song is written in the style of Newsies, a musical that tells the story of a group of teenage newsboys who strike against newspaper publishers in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. The character Davey is one of the main characters, who is portrayed as a leader and a creative figure, who uses his writing skills to express his feelings and aspirations.

Concept Art Association has begun a fundraiser to begin lobbying for artists protections within AI tech in DC. Per their campaign statement:
“We urgently want to take this conversation to D.C. and educate government officials and policymakers on the issues facing the creative industries if this technology is left unchecked. The speed at which this is moving means we also need to be moving quickly. Working alongside a lobbyist some potential solutions/asks would be:
Updating IP and data privacy laws to address this new technology.
Updating laws to include careful and specific use cases for AI/ML technology in entertainment industries, i.e. ensuring no more than a small percentage of the creative workforce is AI/ML models or similar protections.
Also update laws to ensure artists Intellectual Property is respected and protected with this new technologies.
Requiring AI companies to adhere to a strict code of ethics, as advocated by leading AI Ethics organizations.
Requiring AI companies to work alongside Creative Labor Unions, Industry coalitions, and Industry Groups to ensure fair and ethical use of their tools.
Governments hold Stability AI accountable for knowingly releasing irresponsible Open Source models with no protections to the public.”
This is direct action we desperately need. The creators of AI models and those that use them have made it abundantly clear that they do not care about the concerns of artists and will not stop unless forced. Laws need to be created/amended to include this kind of industry-shaking tech. If regulated appropriately, it could become an amazing tool. I, for one, advocate for the ethical development of AI, and I look forward to a future where it is used alongside creators instead of at odds with them.
In the meantime, give CAA a donation and help spread the word.

I'm so glad that generative AI is dying, but please please please understand that chatbot AIs and art generation AIs and voice replicating AIs are not the ones I'm scared of, they're just the most gimmicky, and the easiest to fight in a court of law.
You should be concerned with facial recognition software being used in policing. Many of these AIs are trained on datasets of majority white males, meaning they become less accurate and less effective when used on someone outside of those demographics, meaning more innocent people of marginalized communities being accused and harassed by police.
You should be concerned with resume-reading AI. Amazon created an AI model that was trained on previous hiring data and used to filter out applications. The software recognized a pattern of applicants with non-white names being rejected and thus filtered out every applicant with any non-white name. This software was deemed a failure by Amazon and was scrapped, but highlights a big issue with AI in general. If there's a shred of bias in a testing dataset, that bias will be amplified by the software.
You should be concerned with autonomous weaponry used in warfare. See, when I say "I want fewer people to die in war", it's because I want less war. What I don't want is for large wealthy imperialist countries to be putting lethal weapons with little to no human oversight into warzones where they can 'identify enemy combatants' and 'eliminate targets' at the discretion of a computer program. You know it's bad when even Elon Musk has publicly supported a ban on autonomous weaponry.
You should be concerned with AIs being trained to diagnose medical problems. These AIs are being trained on diagnosis data of previous medical cases. Meaning using patient data for a testing dataset (HIPAA/PIPEDA/GDPR etc. violations??). Anyone who's been tossed around the medical system could tell you that removing the humanity from healthcare will only lead to more suffering.
These are only a few examples I know off the top of my head as someone studying computer science in undergrad. This isn't to say that all AI is bad. AI is such a huge category of software that lumping it all together is irresponsible. AI is used in maps and navigation, spellcheck, translation software, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, online banking, malware detection, hate speech filtering, and so many assistive technologies for disabled people.
I'm glad that chatGPT and AI art generators are dying, but they're barely even on my list of concerns when it comes to AI technology.

AI Technology for Concept Development
Tumblr media
Every single one of these photos were created using an AI system that “creates realistic images/art from a description in a natural language.”
Last night was the first time trying it for myself after hearing about it from friends/online and avoiding it for weeks (if not months.) I know there is a lot of negative things to say, think, and feel about using AI to create art like 3D renders, cartoons, and poetry even; but hear me out 🥴
Tumblr media
My initial feelings when hearing about Open AI Dall-E was fear (obvs) but also curiousity. “HOW TF???” 🤯
I don’t know enough about the technology yet to understand how these images are generated but after using it to create a couple batches of images from just written descriptions of what I want, I’m ready to learn more.
I chose to try this system out at a coincidental (I think not) moment in my creative journey. I’m currently developing animated series concepts with the intention to pitch them to larger studios. As soon as I tried to create a “3D render of a kawaii pastel punk girl with a “Lucky” face tattoo” using Dall-E, I squealed with uncontainable excitement realizing I could use this to help with character design, story conceptualizing/developing, and creating pitch deck materials.
Tumblr media
This could usually be a daunting task especially for anyone creating a show/movie who isn’t also an illustrator/designer. Using AI technology as a tool for this conceptual phase in the writing process can save time, money, and energy for creators. All we need to do to generate images for this purpose is describe the character we want to see (e.g. expression, style, personality) and in what environment and lighting! Apparently you can get really specific with your descriptions.
Tumblr media
AI would not necessarily take the place of traditional character designers either. Again, it could be another tool to help guide them and the rest of the creative team in the same direction. It’s like using a mood board on Pinterest or Google Slides but with more customized images.
Don’t knock it til you try it! You get a couple generated images free a month using an account on Open AI Dall E  *not sponsored*
Have fun! I definitely did haha
Feel free to share your experiences ~
Xoxo,
✨ Lola Menthol ✨

Hey all, you know how internet searches suck now? When the results are awful, full-of-AI, death-of-the-internet levels of bad?
Start appending date constraints to your searches - "before:2023".
My results have gone from 90% AI bullshit to ~60% usable - which frankly at this point is a huge improvement.

*raises my hand to ask a question* what if we collectively refused to refer to AI as 'AI'? it's not artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence doesn't currently exist, it's just algorithms that use stolen input to reinforce prejudice. what if we protested by using a more accurate name? just spitballing here but what about Automated Biased Output (ABO for short)

AI co-worker refers to an artificial intelligence system or tool that collaborates with human employees in a workplace, contributing to tasks, decision-making, and overall productivity. The concept of an AI co-worker is to augment and support human workers rather than replace them. In this video, we'll be exploring AI co-workers and why your next colleague will be an AI.
As technology continues to advance at an unprecedented pace, it's becoming increasingly evident that artificial intelligence (AI) will play a pivotal role in the workplace of the future. The notion that AI will be your next colleague is no longer a distant futuristic concept; it's a reality that's rapidly unfolding. Here's a long description of why your next colleague will likely be an AI:
Efficiency and Productivity: AI is a game-changer when it comes to efficiency and productivity. It can automate repetitive, time-consuming tasks, freeing up employees to focus on more creative, strategic, and high-value tasks. This means that AI isn't just a tool but a collaborator that enhances your work.
Rapid Technological Advancements: Over the past few decades, AI has evolved from being a theoretical concept to a practical tool. With advancements in machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, AI has become more capable and versatile. It can perform tasks that were once exclusive to human workers.
