Cine: Sam Burdette

Eddie Palmer (Justin Timberlake) acaba de salir de prisión tras una condena por tentativa de homicidio y robo, nada menos. Ha recibido la libertad condicional, por lo que debe cuidar mucho sus pasos, y recala en casa de su amada abuela Vivian (June Squibb), una mujer de fuertes convicciones cristianas que lo ha criado desde la muerte de su padre. Una vez establecido, nota la presencia de un remolque vecino (lo que en Estados Unidos llaman RV) en el que una mujer y una niña parecen jugar. Más pronto que tarde, descubre que la mujer se llama Shelley (Juno Temple), es una drogadicta que convive con su pareja abusiva (Dean Winters) y la niña... es su hijo Sam (Ryder Allen), a quien su personalidad no muy masculina (es fanático de una serie animada sobre hadas y princesas voladoras a tal punto que sueña con formar parte del club que el programa ha lanzado) le depara muchas experiencias fatídicas con sus compañeros de escuela.

El pequeño suele pasar un tiempo con Vivian, lo que, en presencia de Palmer, comienza a desarrollar una relación cada vez más filial entre ambos. El hombre, que al principio lo miraba con algo de recelo, llega a convertirse en una creciente figura paterna capaz de arriesgar su libertad con tal de defenderlo del bullying de sus compañeros... y de otros adultos. Y no es para menos: el pequeño, que suele pasar tiempo "tomando el té" con su mejor amiga Emily (Molly Sue Harrison), es un derroche de ternura, inocencia y simpatía. Alguien capaz de incentivarle para intentar adoptarlo y así salvarle de un muy posible destino trágico; al ex convicto le acompaña Maggie (Alisha Wainwright), maestra de Sam, a quien conoce debido a su trabajo en la escuela y de quien llega a enamorarse.

Dirigido por el también actor Fisher Stevens, el relato es un abierto llamado de atención sobre los prejuicios, algo justificados en alguien con el historial de Eddie e inequívocamente crueles en el caso del dulce Sam, la intolerancia y los abusos de todo tipo.

So after all 9 episodes and a couple of hours to dissect all the evidence, I believe that “Raising Dion” has a lot untapped potential beneath its glaring instability. Outside of it’s action scenes being semi-effective, the overall mystery elements being well-teased even if they aren’t executed well and it’s episodic structure fluctuating from average to pretty sound, it’s acting is impressive specifically from its main lead, it’s dramatic moments are really convincing, it’s direction, while conventional, does give the leeway for some neat ideas and it does touch up some challenging themes around being overbooked as a single mother, discipline and self-control. While it’s easy to dissect what the show gets right, it’s flaws however are just as noticeable. It’s special effects are dodgy, most of the characters even the leads don’t feel believable or fleshed out, the family drama mixing in with the superhero theatrics just didn’t have a concrete flow even with a consistent tone and it lacks heavily in originality, for this show isn’t subtle at all at trying to mask itself as Stranger Things 2.0, which in turn makes many of its memorable moments all too familiar. Seriously, I haven’t even watched every episode of every season of Stranger Things and even I KNOW it wants to be Stranger Things! I can definitely see how these problems could carry over into the second season and squander the shows content of quality but I can also see how their ideas can be improved or tweaked upon to make this show a potential Netflix staple for the new generation. Today we say goodbye to a series that I hold very dear to my heart. I remember after I found out there weren’t going to be be any more movies after city of bones I was crushed (no pun intended) and then I found out they were making a series on what was back then called abc family and i got SO EXCITED that i was going to see the whole story on screen still. For the past 4 years and 3 seasons we have seen some badass and some emotional moments and I cannot believe our beloved Shadowhunters is coming to an end. We get 2 and a half hours more of the story but we will always have these characters to go back to whether it’s by book, by movie, or by show. Thank you Clary Fray for showing us how a girl who knew nothing about the shadow world turned into the most badass shadowhunter there is and just all of these characters mean so much to me and the actors who portrayed them as well.
