Off-roading is more than a simple hobby; it is an amazing experience that opens many new doors full of adrenaline. However, there are many aspects when it comes down to off-roading ranging from overlanding, 4x4 vehicles, All Wheel Drive (AWD), the correct tires and most importantly remembering that this is a game of inches.
Overlanding can be noted as one of the most unique off-roading experiences because it is extremely eye catching with the amazing views. Unlike traditional off-roading trips where the focus is on conquering all the terrains, overlanding is an extended trip typically covering great distances and remote landscapes. This kind of experience can test oneself reliance and connect one with nature. Would this be a journey you would be up to?
Although, to complete such a journey one must understand the difference in driving systems and decide for themselves. I like that I was able to find a post and repost it, where it explained the difference simply. A 4x4 system works by controlling the power of each wheel independently, having the ability to switch from 4x4 to rear wheel drive (RWD). This feature along with low-range gears (the L gear in a truck) and differential locks provide great traction in many terranes. On the other hand, AWD (All Wheel Drive) provides power to all the wheels at the same time all the time. This makes it great for moderate off-roading trails and various weathers.
When looking for the right tire one must look for traction and durability. Something to remember is having the correct tires on a vehicle can truly improve performance and safety. Off-roading tires are designed to have thick sidewalls to prevent any punctures and rugged threads to handle rough terrain. Nevertheless, there are specific tires for specific terrains known as All Terrain (AT), Mud Terrian (MT), and even hydride design (AT/MT). On a side note, the tire size and air pressure are also extremely important. With a larger tire there is more clearance and traction making it harder to get stuck straight on. In addition, adjusting air pressure provides the tire to have more surface on the ground allowing better traction. Traction may be the most important word when it comes down to off-roading because when inches away from an edge, traction is what is saving you.
I say this is a game of inches because when off-roading skills like precision are displayed. Navigating and maneuvering through tight spaces is extremely challenging because not many people want to end up needing to call for help because they got stuck or worse. Off-roading is not just about driving over obstacles, it’s about the exploration with friends or solo at the same time connecting with the outdoors. It does not matter how experienced one is, there is always sometimes new and exciting to discover when off-roading.
