Christine Canigula was socially ostracized & developed a complex to protect herself: an essay
(suddenly i NEED to infodump about Christine actually so here)
Something I only noticed on rewatch: the way Christine will say something silly and then just kind of gingerly wait to see if Jeremy reacts well to it before continuing, almost like she's asking permission?? (e.g. the gap after the first stanza of "Play Rehearsal"). And it's only after he riffs off her bowling alley bit that she feels comfortable talking about her personal feelings with him (right before "Guy that I'd Kinda be Into"). The same happens with their "weird noise" exchange immediately before "It's pretty killer to sit and chat with you." I know theater relies on being succinct, and that 'bonding over shared quirks' and 'feelings talk' are both just crucial parts of relationship development... but I don't think it's a coincidence that it always goes in that order!
It's like Jeremy has to pass these *trials of weirdness* before she feels safe opening up to him and it drives me BONKERS so I wrote a whole 1000 word thing about it under the cut and this got too massive and I'm sorry. Also some autistic Jeremy meta at the end if that sweetens the pot hehehe
Table of contents:
Why she was ostracized
How she was ostracized
How that might inform her pattern of relationship development with Jeremy and Jake
How gender caused Jeremy's experiences to differ from hers, and how that affects their current relationships with "popularity" and peer acceptance.
1. Why she was ostracized
I am just so certain that Christine has been bullied or at least majorly outcast for a lot of her life. She's very obviously neurodivergent and because of that she can have these obnoxiously deep and repetitive interests, she can't judge if a piece of information will be genuinely interesting to someone, and she doesn't take social cues very well.
She frequently interrupts people when they're talking (an ADHD symptom btw), even when they're literally talking to her about the thing she wants to hear!
(C: "Do you find that? Because I totally find that!" J: "Uh, yeah, I-" C: "-And no matter how hard I try....")
(J: "I know the last thing I deserve is another shot, but-" C:"Jeremy, just... say what's on your mind.") (girl I'm sorry but that's what he was doing..... I have a whole other thoughtpiece on how this particularly fucks with Jeremy while they're dating but thats another thing...)
She doesn't seem confident in her interpretations of people's emotions and she'll ask/talk about them point blank (both theirs and her own) in a way a lot of people would find rude
("Uh, you seem really nervous...") ("Popular people are fucked up! *mutual laughter* …I mean, you're one of them!") ("I am flattered, this is new / still I'm not sure what I should do" <- as a response to getting asked out, that's pretty bold! Plus the entire part where she laughs at Jake's "rich boy routine") (also compare and contrast to Jeremy's "I don't know what I'm supposed to say right now." idk. are your allistic stage dorks in the room with us right now motherfuckers)
I'd go on about her hyperfixations/special interests too but I think Play Rehearsal pretty much sums it up lol
2. How she was ostracized
All this to say that I am CERTAIN she spent a lot of her schooling having "nice girls" patiently let her sit with them at lunch for weeks at a time until they finally get sick of her rambling and faux pas. Only when they leave does Christine realize that they didn't actually care about anything she said... And this happens over and over and over. (I know this seems hella specific but I swear it's an actual phenomenon... at least I'm pretty sure? sdjflksjf)
But anyway, it's clear that by the time they're juniors, Christine has kind of (and I do only mean kind of) figured out what behaviour other people respond poorly to. And from evidence I stated in the intro, I think she's become really careful about which people she lets herself get attached to. She doesn't want this to ever happen again - which means if she's going to hang out with someone, she has to know that they actually care about her, that they know she will sometimes be obnoxious or blunt, and they'll still be okay with that forever.
3. Applying this to her canon relationships
You can extend this to Jake, someone who sees her in her element in drama rehearsal (the thing everyone finds annoying about her because she won't shut up about it) and STILL likes her. I think it's a totally valid reading that her bluntness with him later ("Upgrade") is just because she misreads him / doesn't quite get the social standard that she should be white lying instead. But I think you could also read her as testing the waters. If she's really going to commit to dating this guy, she's gotta know he's okay with her being herself. And the fact that this guy (and I think it's significant that he is a boy, for reasons I'll explain in the end note) genuinely seems to like her is a whole new level of peer validation ("I am flattered, this is new") -- so of course she's gonna fall at least a little! It doesn't hurt that he's "tired of being the person that everyone thinks that I am..." just like her!
Her history with being pity-liked makes Chloe's "advice," that Jake's just toying with her and is going to move on soon, even scarier, because that's genuinely happened to her (on a platonic level) so many times before.
Jeremy is also a good candidate from the beginning because he's weird he's a weirdo he doesn't fit in and he doesn't wanna fit in you ever see him without this stupid cardigan on? that's weird! And she keeps warming up to him not only because they're getting to know each other but because he gets progressively more willing to not only tolerate (as Jake does) but *participate* in her weirdness!
First, she does something weird and he tolerates it ("Play Rehearsal"); the next time she's weird, he participates! (bowling ball before GTIKBI). Then finally finally finally he initiates the weirdness and lets her join in! ("weird noises" exchange before GTIKBI reprise).
And notably, it is THIS moment that canonically signifies that they've hit the apex of their canon relationship development. If there was an achievement called "Befriend Christine," it would have popped up right then and there!!!
IN CONCLUSION: YOUR HONOR I LOVE THEM T_T
4: Christine vs. Jeremy: Gender differences & how that ultimately impacts their social goals
I also think all of this would have happened to Jeremy too if he'd been a girl. But because, generally, young boys feel less social obligation than girls to take pity on the autistic kid (and because boys tend to be more quickly recognized as autistic) he just ends up completely alone for most of his school life (Michael nonwithstanding - and yeah there's an important distinction between your childhood friend putting up with you and knowing that, woah, I guess literally nobody else ever will).
Meanwhile, Christine has had people "put up" with her, and she's SICK OF IT!
That's part of why their complexes are so different, because Christine is trying to check everyone she meets to make sure they'll be okay with her weirdness before she gets attached, Jeremy is trying to eliminate his weirdness altogether because he's never even experienced his peers listening out of *pity* so how the hell can he expect someone to ever listen to him out of *interest?*
Jeremy has never had someone pretend to like him before, so he completely lacks Christine's fear of befriending someone who secretly hates you. He doesn't realize how bad it'll hurt him if he destroys his real self for popularity, if he befriends people who would have bullied his real self. He doesn't know what disingenuous friendship feels like, so like a very young Christine he's still actively trying to get there because he thinks it's the only kind of validation he'll ever get.
Do you see what im saying? Do you see it???? AUAUGUGUUGGH

16 + jeremy heere :)
Oh my gosh you’re a genius.
Jeremy blinked. Then blinked again. The image in the bathroom mirror didn't change. At first he didn’t even notice anything was wrong, until he took a closer look and realised his reflection was taller than him, that it was wearing a cardigan he hadn't touched in weeks, and its hair was messy in a way the Squip would never allow. The reflection blinked - and wasn't that a weird sight - it tilted it’s head slightly in way that reminded Jeremy of a confused puppy; something he very much didn't do.
“Is this a Squip thing?” he asked after a moment of silence, no other explanation could make sense of this weird hallucination. The reflection pursed its lips, staying quiet. It scanned him up and down, eyes roving from his styled hair to the form-fitting shirt it lacked. It looked back at him, head tilted down slightly to make direct eye contact. “You still have the Squip?” It asked.
Jeremy suppressed a flinch when his reflection spoke back with his voice, he had been expecting it, sure, but that didn't make it any less weird. Instead, he stood up straighter, puffing out his chest like he was instructed to “Yes” he answered.
The reflection looked crestfallen, which didn't make any sense. It took a deep breath, clenching and unclenching its fists - something Jeremy wasn't allowed to do anymore, and let it out in a heavy sigh. “Look” it said “You’re not going to believe me- I know because I wouldn't believe me, but I’m you. I’m Jeremy Heere, a couple of months in the future”.
Jeremy blinked. Then blinked again. Then he laughed “You expect me to believe that?” he asked incredulously “Dude, I know my brain is weird but this is just insane”.
The reflection made a frustrated noise “It’s true!” it insisted “I’m you- just - look, ask me a question only you would know the answer to”.
Jeremy crossed his arms smugly “Trick question” he said haughtily “You’re from my brain, so anything I know-”.
“I automatically know too” the reflection finished with a smug expression “Isn't that what you were going to say?”.
Jeremy scoffed, ignoring the seed of doubt that lodged in his throat “That’s barely proof” he deflected “If you’re really me in the future, then tell me if you’re dating Christine Canigula yet”. If by some chance this really was him in the future- the Squip had definitely succeeded by then, right?
The reflection’s lip twitched, like it was laughing at a joke he didn't understand. “I’m in a committed relationship if that’s what you’re asking” it said vaguely.
Jeremy frowned “With Christine, right?” he pressed. The reflection smiled, saying nothing.
The boy sighed, massaging his forehead aggressively “If this is my psyche trying to tell me something” he grumbled under his breath “You’re not being very clear about it”.
The reflection laughed - that ugly wheezing sound that Jeremy detested. “I know you don’t believe it, but I am actually you from the future” it said softly. Jeremy looked up to see its mirthful smile had shifted to something more melancholic, something that looked disgustingly like pity “And there’s something I want to tell you so bad… but we’ve seen enough time travel movies to know that knowing the future changes it”.
“If you’re from the future” Jeremy said haltingly, tendrils of doubt slowly climbing up his throat “How are you here?”.
The reflection shrugged “Your guess is as good as mine, dude. I don’t remember this happening at all”. It looked him up and down again, frowning at his appearance (not that he could tell why considering he looked leagues better than the wanna-be in the mirror). It hummed contemplatively, giving him a sad smile.
He had officially had enough of this hallucination / fever dream / actual science-defying act of time travel. “I’m going to bed,” he announced.
The reflection nodded “Okay. You do that”. Jeremy turned around, fully intending on forgetting this entire interaction. A voice called out for him just as his hand reached the bathroom doorknob “One more thing. Just some advice? Don't lose Michael”.
Jeremy recoiled like he’d been slapped “What?” he demanded, whirling around to meet his reflection. Only, it looked normal. Styled hair, tight shirt, haunted expression-
God he looked like a mess, Squip would kill him for letting his appearance be so flawed. It was only then he noticed that the supercomputer hadn't said anything at all during that entire exchange. He shook his head, he was way too tired, he was going to bed.
He didn’t think about it at all the next morning.

Trey: *Trying to explain Riddle is that way because of his mom*
Me: Give me a minute as I pull up my ‘Trauma Doesn’t Excuse Sh*t Behavior’ PowerPoint.
Say it with me, everyone: an explanation is not an excuse 😊
You know, the other day I was watching one of Ryan George's Pitch Meetings and when Producer Guy asked Writer Guy how the audience would root for the villain of the franchise and the response was "he's handsome" which basically explains most people's reactions to fictional men.
Prepare for incoming rant that has little to do with the ask
This probably might come as a shock because one of the main appeal of twst would be the whole villainous aspect/Disney Villain fanbase but I don't really like villains that much, at least, not romantically. Like don't get me wrong, I think that they're incredible characters and it would be so fun to sit down with one and have a conversation with one. Villain songs are so fun (I was literally singing ‘This Day Aria’ to myself the other day I haven’t heard that song in like a decade) and you can tell that that characters like Scar or Hades or Shere Khan or Jafar or Maleficent are having so much fun being deliciously evil and even the more serious, complex ones like Loki or Frollo are fun to pick apart so yeah I understand the hype. I just always rooted for the heroes and I guess heroic characters have always been more my type.
My mother absolutely loves Erik Destler and is forever salty that Christine chose Raoul (despite my many many attempts at arguing why Raoulstine is the superior couple - smol primary school me could not understand why my mum liked the chandelier dropper and was deeply concerned), my best friend has been in love with Heathcliffe since we were eleven, and my little sister has literally told me that her type of fictional men are the toxic red flags (not exactly word for word but she did explain why she likes bad boys over good boys when I was complaining about how my type (wholesome soft boys) always get sidelined for the arrogant, snarky bad boys - we're also very diametrically opposed on our views of friends to lovers (my s++ tier all time favourite and her loathing) vs enemies to lovers (I can't really stand it - Pride and Prejudice is the only exception - and that's literally all she consumes) so that might also be a reason).
Like, I understand the appeal of a Byronic hero (Mr Darcy has far too much power) - a closed off, broody man that hates everything but you? And will burn down the world to keep you warm? I can respect that there are people who dig that. But their not really for me.
The mild bout of insanity thirteen year old me had where I spent two months attracted to Edward Rochester is an outlier and should not have been counted (though that was during my wattpad phase so...)
But I can admit that I have yet to shake off my feelings for Dr Henry Jekyll, Victor Frankenstein and Dorian Gray (though to be fair, Mr Gabriel John Utterson the lawyer and cinnamon roll artist boy Basil Hallward do own my heart). And yes, Jeremy Jordan did make me question my morality as he did make my feelings for Light Yagami be too positive to be sane for a brief moment (Touta Matsuda is still my man, don't worry). But apart from them, literally all of my faves are what you'd call your traditional, morally upright heroes.
Basically what I'm saying is that my perception might be skewed because I've never had the whole 'villains are cooler' mindset when it came to stories. Yes, I love the villains as characters but I always liked their heroic foils more (goodness is just so attractive to me). You get lots of amazing heroic protagonists that have horribly tragic backstories and they're the ones I always fall for because the idea of being a kind sweetheart despite the world being anything but is just *chef's kiss* that's a kind of strength that's so swoon-worthy.
I guess that's why it's harder for me to look past the characters' actions in twst is because, well, they chose to do everything they did. They made a conscious choice to be terrible, despite understanding the consequences. Riddle may have been brainwashed into becoming a tyrant by his mother but he still admitted that he knew he was being horrible - he understands the concept of morality, of good and bad, and he willingly and deliberately did everything he did.
I suppose this text post I found on Pinterest would explain my point better:

i don't think i've posted about this before so here is my completely nonsensical theory/overanalysis on The Play
let's take a look at the squipped characters' lines in the play, shall we? starting with mr. reyes. "You needy, pathetic, self-centered students. You think I wanted to teach high school drama? In New Jersey? My Squip says I can go all the way to Broadway. I just have to make sure you don’t ruin my big night."
lot to unpack here. could be true that mr. reyes does indeed think this but we've seen him interact in a very friendly manner with the students before- asking about the jake-madeline scandal, (in the broadway version) hanging out with the students, overall just being nice to the Popular Kids even if they objecticely suck at acting. in some productions he even hugs christine when she shows disappointment about the play being changed. personally i think it's unlikely he thinks of his students as 'needy, pathetic, self-centered'- whether he hates teaching drama in middleborough or wants to go to broadway we can't know for sure, but still.
next up, jake. "I was already pretty boss before / now I'm totally boss and then some more / I'm living the upgrade / God, I love me!"
now. you already know how unhealthily obsessed i am with jake and how much of his character i fleshed out in my head with close to zero canon basis lol. i'll try my best to stay within canon here- after play rehearsal jake admitted to christine that "When I saw you die in the play last year... That was like the saddest I’d felt in a long time. It was like everything in my life, all the pressure I feel to be the best, at everything, all the time... Suddenly felt so small." basically he's saying that he's been pressured to be perfect at everything his entire life but implying christine's acting made that pain feel small in comparison because y'know, flirting tactics. he's got some self-esteem issues, he did not think he was 'pretty boss before', fight me. wouldn't be a stretch to say that he doesn't really love himself either, then.
alright, mr. reyes and jake's lines are a little bit ambiguous. but brooke and chloe make it very clear they're being controlled by their squips. "I just want you to know, I’m not mad you broke my heart and slept with my best friend." "And I’m not mad you dated my best friend and wouldn’t sleep with me."
really? the brooke who was crying at the halloween party because she thought jeremy cheated on her and ignored chloe's call the next day isn't mad? the chloe who did oh you know, all of do you wanna fucking hang wasn't mad or jealous jeremy was dating her best friend? bullshit. this is why i have mixed feelings on the changed lines in the broadway production- while it adds depth to the girls' characters instead of just reducing them to their relationship with boys it completely throws off my entire theory that nothing the squipped people say during The Play is true. (tbh which is likely the case & i'm overanalyzing all this but whatever it's just a fun little theory i have)
because see- in the first draft of the script christine's lines are "I hate play rehearsal / so says my voice that comes from within / I am perfect sans rehearsal / because I don't need to practice to win"
we've already established play rehearsal is christine's coping mechanism and an escape for feeling lost in life as well as a metaphor for her not being able to find her true identity. what do you mean she thinks she's 'perfect sans rehearsal' and 'doesn't need to practice to win'. that goes against her entire character. even the finalized changed lyrics where she admits "You are the person I want to be with every day / And this is something that I've been afraid to say / You're the guy I am so kinda into / The guy I am totally into / This feeling is new / Jeremy, I love you" are... debatable. christine had previously shown little to no romantic interest in jeremy, even turning him down at the halloween party that she needed to find herself before dating someone. she did agree to go out with him in the end but that was most likely because she thought highly of his actions during the play and because she got to know him better. and even if we presume she did have feelings for jeremy all along, the line 'this feeling is new' still wouldn't make sense. most importantly jeremy himself says 'that's not christine'. he recognizes her being controlled by her squip, she doesn't really mean what she's saying.
so. basically what i'm saying is my theory is that what the characters say while squipped during the play are all contradictory to what they actually feel, because the squip's goal is to manipulate jeremy by making it seem like everyone's happy with the squips when they all have their own problems in reality. the implication is that the squip is supposed to be the solution to all those problems but as we know through jeremy and rich that isn't exactly the case. especially not during The Play, aka its epic villain moment.
that's about it thanks for coming to my ted talk

So here are my thoughts on my first time seeing a live BMC production!
Making this non-rebloggable, I am not a real theater critic and I do not want to draw any attention to this actual cast on an anonymous blog to strangers on the internet
For starters, casting!
I respect the variety going on here and the degree of diverging from famous character appearance-tropes. Tiny Latino Jeremy who's as fit as a gymnast and can (and does) do acrobatic spin kicks sometimes? Love it. Plus-size butch-esque Brooke? 10/10. Genderfuckery long-haired Michael who gesticulates with a huge fan through most conversations? Hell yeah. Pink-haired Nirvana-grunge-style trans guy Jake? Now we're talking. Christine a head taller than Jeremy? Awesome.
I will not get too into describing actual real people on here much more than that but in general it was wonderful to see a wide range of character-actor types inhabiting these roles. As someone involved in The Fandom, even though I have frequently expounded upon the mutability of character traits per the text, you do still absorb a general idea of what the characters "look" like; so it was a fun twist to have literally none of the performers fall into those tropes.
I will also say - and this is not a read - that I am no longer going to assume I'm too old to play any of these characters, because I guess that's the magic of community theater lol
On to Thoughts, which I will loosely group by characters:
Rich was fucking awesome. Like I was impressed by the singing skill across the board, but this guy fucking killed it at every turn. I looked at my friend I went with after The Squip Song and we both were like OH OK. Rich also wore mostly KISS T-shirts? Like the shitty glam rock band? But yknow, work. Excellent voice (if casting were a little more 'stereotypical,' he probably would be an excellent Michael). Emotionally, he was on the more explosive side while SQUIPped, melting toward just charmingly cute once in 'real Rich Goranski' mode.
The aforementioned Jake was an interesting take on the character. Definitely leaned more into the kind of douchey side of things, but did at least at one point seem genuinely into Christine (although the actor was very much leaning into the interpretation 'yeah he has multiple interests and he honestly likes them all in the moment but gets bored quickly, and that includes girlfriends'). Is that kind of shitty? Yes. Is that a realistic take on what a rich popular 17 year old might be like? Also yes. Nirvana-fan Jake was not a concept I thought of before but I was down for it (though I discovered later on the cast instagram page that the guy playing Jake said that his version of Jake thinks Nirvana is a clothing brand which, like, galaxy-brain take lol).
THE SQUIP!!!!! Actually cycled through Keanu Reeves costumes, which I loved. Started out in Bill & Ted, then Matrix, then POINT BREAK of all things, before landing on a pretty-impressive-for-the-budget version of the light-up circuitry priest robe thing from the Broadway style. He had the hair and beard pretty close to present-day Keanu too, which made him both line up with the resemblance and seem significantly older than the other characters; voice-wise, this guy was clearly a skilled baritone, which meant his delivery on some of the more rock-style songs was a bit unusual, but not bad. This SQUIP was suave at the right parts but did NOT shy away from being scary: the 'take me inside you' part with Brooke during Upgrade was staged very menacingly with regards to how he was physically moving around/behind Jeremy. The Play was delightfully sinister, leaning HARD into the SQUIP as literally puppeteering everyone: saying their lines and moving his hands like marionnettes throughout, keeping things very creepy and villainous.
On the topic of the play, the fight choreography kicked ass. Mr. Reyes's ALL THE WAY TO BROADWAY rant was delivered while he yanked Jeremy off the ground by his shirtfront and then threw him furiously across the stage, genuinely concerning and upsetting to watch (especially as the SQUIP was miming the same actions and lines behind him, obviously in control of Reyes's body) (I literally said 'oh fuck' out loud when it happened and got a Look from the presumably-grandma in the row ahead lol). The fight choreography during Two Player Game Reprise was also solid: the guy playing Jeremy was FIT and did a lot of impressive acrobatic kicks and such, and the person playing Michael being a lot taller and larger worked well with letting him like bounce off, lift him up for spin kicks, etc.
And in general, I respected how much this production was willing to let certain moments be dark. The Play in general was pretty horror-movie-climax; I also respected that the costuming did indeed look like so-so high school mockups of a modern zombie movie. But the whole number was eerie, SQUIPPED character movements and voices became unnervingly smooth and robotic, and positioning the SQUIP as the puppetmaster in the middle, literally moving the characters around, just sold the whole thing wonderfully. Very appropriately leaning into the horror part of horror-comedy.
Similarly, Do You Wanna Hang? was scary. AS IT SHOULD BE. My friend who came with me compared it favorably to the car scene in the movie 8th Grade, where you're just On Edge the whole time you're watching. The actress playing Chloe did a good job with it, that's an uncomfortable thing to portray but she went for it and it paid off in the moment.
Chloe and Brooke had a fun dynamic: the styles of the costuming/performers did add some interesting dimensions. Chloe was, as usual, pink and perfect and feminine, head-cheerleader vibes; Brooke was short haired and dressed a lot more masculine. Brooke had a very earnest sense of vulnerability to her, and excellent comedic timing during Do You Wanna Ride and The Smartphone Hour, as well as just the minor background-acting moments. They leaned pretty hard into the 'Chloe will take things just because Brooke wanted them, because she likes that Brooke is always a little jealous of her, and thinks that that's friendship' and, like the portrayal of Jake: is that a shitty thing to do? Yes. Is that a realistic thing teenagers might do, especially poisoned by toxic ideas about femininity and power? Also yes.
Which is a good spot to add, the ensemble was small (4) but they were serving it. The band appeared to be octogenarian church volunteers (oh, yeah, this was at a church??? Wesleyan Methodists, so the cool liberal branch of American Christianity) so I will say that with what they had, they were making it work. It would have been served well by a second keyboardist and/or guitarist to do the trumpet parts (it was drums, bass, guitar, and piano). One of the ensemble members, a tall goth-femme person with hot pink hair, played the role of the theremin by doing the melodies in remarkable and ethereal bel canto. And honestly, work.
Jenna Rolan was fun: could belt for the gods, had some pretty-intense Crazy Eyes thing going on that really sold the comedic moments and made her appropriately frightening as the Final Boss in the squipped battle at the end, styled like an early 2000s-lesbian-coded-soft-goth best friend archetype. No notes, 11/10.
The actor playing Mr. Heere/Reyes/Stockboy did a fantastic job of making those three seem separate, and as I mentioned above, really made Mr. Reyes come to life in a dynamic way. Sidenote, this production changed all references to Hobby Lobby to Michaels, which I found both funny and appropriate. Fuck Hobby Lobby, we all hate Hobby Lobby.
Back to characterizations, Christine was sweet and straightforward. Not as quirky or dynamic as Stephanie or a lot of other actresses make her, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Very gentle and smooth voice, she just really likes theater and wants someone to like the real her. They went with ballet-style choreography to introduce her during More Than Survive, which is always a wonderful touch for the way the music swells. There were points where I think a little more creative movement or a wider emotional range might have worked well, but the take on the character was consistent.
I am going to keep that positive thread through the next sections: while I might not have agreed with the interpretation through the text, I do respect going in a starkly different direction to how most productions and fans usually take such things.
I have enormous respect for the performer playing Michael for radically making it their own. The cast bios had pronouns, and Michael's performer was they/she/he, which as a fellow they/she/he who would love to play Michael someday was rad to see. They kept the CREEPS shirt and a hoodie with a lot of patches (albeit a black one with red accents), but that was about it. Michael had light-up cat ear headphones and a huge black fan which he used throughout, alternated between baggy sweatpants or just a floor-length hippy skirt, usually high-heel ankle boots, and some kind of green bathrobe thing for The Pants Song? Characterization, again, respect for making such an iconic character so heavily different. This Michael was not....very emotional. He was usually snippy and sarcastic in a very erudite and matter-of-fact way, at pretty much all points in the show. Not a lot of emotional range going on: this is a Michael who is in some combination of 'doesn't give a shit' and 'not going to let this bother me,' which came off....interesting. The chemistry this created with Jeremy was a starkly different one than we usually see. The original productions - and most since, and the majority of fandom depictions - imagines a Michael and Jeremy who, at their core, love each other a lot. However that manifests of course varies, but you Usually get the impression that (even with a little bit of codependence), these two genuinely love each other and spending time together, which makes moments in the show either heartwarming or devastating to see happen between them.
Not these versions of the characters.
Which didn't make it bad, but it did shake things up. This Michael and Jeremy didn't give deep-love-friendship so much as they gave 'we sat next to each other in 1st grade and don't have other friends. so. I guess we're best friends, huh.'
Which is an INTERESTING and somewhat bleaker, but not unrealistic, take on them. That, sadly, summarizes a lot of friendships, especially at that age and with the sort of vacuum of suburbia on your social sphere (nevermind how a lot of society discourages boys from emotional connection with their friends; if anything, the fact that this Michael was definitely queer might suggest that Jeremy even pulled back emotionally because he didn't want to seem gay or give this Michael the wrong idea). It definitely sells Jeremy feeling lonely, even with his best friend hanging around. Two-Player Game came across a LOT better than I was prepared for - I have waxed about how it's a hard number to pull off - not in spite of, but almost because of this. Like, sure, they've played through this game a million times before, they know every beat, they love it like they love each other, right? even though they seem.....kind of bored. Or at least like they're waiting for something else to happen. College? Girlfriend? Different friends? Just wait two years. Whatever.
To get critical, I will say that this dynamic did not really help Michael in the Bathroom. The fight beforehand and the song itself did.....not really lend themselves to a not-very-emotional friendship between them. The singing was perfect, so not faulting that: it's THE big song of the show, so that's a lot of pressure and the performer had a splendid voice, but the snarky-not-caring-that-much attitude didn't quite do it for me - Michael didn't seem sad or upset so much as pissed off, but still fully keeping it together (despite the lyrics saying otherwise). Tonally, the 'wish I'd offed myself instead' just sounded sarcastic ("wow, SORRY I CARED AT ALL, could've just killed myself for all you seem to care" kind of vibes) THAT SAID, it was consistent with the rest of the characterization, so I admire it as a very specific acting choice. There were also characters on stage - presumably outside the bathroom door, listening in - that turned a good portion of MITB into a comedic number; as I have said before, not my personal take on how that should go, but the audience was laughing along with it! So that's the wonderful mutability of theater.
Strangely enough, this actually made Michael and Jeremy's relationship at the end of the story work out just fine? The SQUIP experience kind of sparked a "wow we really do care about each other, huh" realization from both of them. Again, mad respect for taking such a different approach to such a well-worn character relationship.
So, overall, I am very happy I got to see this. Love to support live theater, love to be surprised by a story that I thought I knew pretty well inside and out, came away with plenty to think and talk about. If you can, go support your local community theater!

(Belated) Notes - Phantom Broadway - Saturday, March 11 - Matinee
These are so late, but better late than never, right?
The main trio was Ben Crawford, Julia Udine, and Paul A. Schaefer, and this was my first time seeing the show on Broadway! The only other time I've seen it was the restaged tour in Toronto in January 2020, so I was so excited to see the brilliant original
I loved Julia's Think of Me, so beautiful. She hadn't been my favourite Christine purely based on audio, but seeing her live, I now have a newfound love for her
I've seen some people say that Paul looks really bored during Think of Me, but to me, at least at my show, it seemed like an intense focus. People complain about him being more focused on his program than on the show, but it definitely came across as an intense focus on Christine before he checked his program, then scrambled for his opera glasses to see if it was indeed her. A detail I very much enjoyed
Ben's acting during the descent to the lair did it for me (and this might be blocking, but I loved it). The way he held the lamp closer to Christine for her to see better, the reassuring hand squeeze. Good stuff
He also stroked his hand down Julia's arm just before they exited the ramp. I lost it.
Three good almost kisses during MOTN - the first one, on "turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light" came very close, Ben ducked away so last minute.
Ben did a thigh stroke. That's all I can say. I have no words.
He may as well have been singing into her mouth at the portcullis, their faces were VERY close together for a moment before Julia ran off.
Ben's reaction to STYDI honestly looked almost more frustrated that she had disturbed his composing initially - there was no shout, he just seemed a bit startled before he begrudgingly stood up, and he didn't run, but walked with purpose. Still threatening, though.
I'm pretty sure I could see the top of Ben's fedora when he was hiding in the angel during AIAOY from where I was sitting. Almost 99% sure.
Julia's Wishing was just as gorgeous as people had said it was. Her voice, her acting, the desperate clutching of the scarf and the kisses she pressed to it were all just beautiful.
Wandering Child was great, so surreal to hear that live, it's one of my favourite songs. That trio did such a lovely job - Ben definitely dominated vocally.
Also, people laughed when the Phantom came out of the cross? I had been so relieved when they didn't laugh at him in the angel, but then they laughed as he appeared at the mausoleum and I was very confused.
PONR was great and very sexy. Ben's crotch grab seems to be a thing for him these days; he did it just before Julia put a hand on his mask, his hand practically flew to his crotch. No hovering, there was definite contact.
The kiss in Final Lair did me in. Ben's hands just sort of hovered with the first one, then he pressed the deformed side of his face against her hair during the hug. He cupped her face for a second during the second kiss—again, contact, not just hovering—and then touched her waist briefly before pulling away.
The "take her, forget me" etc, etc portion definitely came across as Ben just barely holding it together and managing not to break down crying while they were still there - he sounded choked up, his voice was a little strained, etc.
Julia hesitated for a couple of seconds after she let go of Ben's hand at the ring return. She thought about staying for a solid second before leaving.
Ben directed "you alone can make my song take flight" towards the boat while they rode away, then turned to the audience for the last line.
I went to stage door after the show and ended up meeting Paul, Julia, Nehal, Carlton, and Howard McGillin, as well as Rory (coneyislanddesigns on Instagram), Raquel Suarez Groen's dresser!
Overall, a totally beautiful show that I'm so grateful that I got to see!
My friend also made some notes on Jeremy's show, so I will likely be posting those for you all to enjoy, along with the art that she did for him since everyone loved seeing that last time!

im actually gonna liveblog my own thoughts about those last few chaps of my fic, which are basically always going to be "i'm hilarious actually" but yknow. specific lines. minor spoilers ig
>be jeremy >tell rich about how you fixed the giant issue where yelling at a squip can turn off every squip in the network >by telling him this aloud, you just alerted the squips to this security flaw >mfw i destroyed the easiest way to save the world without a second thought: :) >still smilling at rich, ready for praise >rich short circuits.
plus with the shutdown that christine mentioned this chapter. it's almost like ? jeremy isn't coming at this from a perspective of wanting to turn squips off???? and never even bothered researching that option??? 😂 bonkers. who'd have thought
i fully recognize that having a coder POV say "The bugs, miraculously, became rarer and smaller" is the biggest ask in the fic in terms of suspension of disbelief. maybe when jeremy is better at this they'll realize they were wrong about that. not in a "this update is secretly a time bomb" way but in a "holy shit i can't believe i used to think this was good programming" way
i still think it's funny whenever i reference jeremy muting themself after the FIRST TIME it came up where jeremy acknowledged that "muting themself wasn't any different from a human just choosing not to speak." i love my weird robot child.
i still like the "C-c-c-c'mon, Jeremy, can't you see, we've got a date, so concentrate! We'll start with us, just me and you, some deja vu, and then ensue: your microchip plus our friendship-" implying "the squip" being sung in the same lovestruck voice as the chorus usually sings "christine."
^ i usually pick a song to write the summary from based solely on vibes and character focus. the fact that this was from Upgrade rather than two player game was a dead giveaway regarding michael's intentions btw.
writing michael after that last mall scene has been so weird. on purpose. but like everything he says is a catchy line ending on a discordant note. the sudden pivot from slowburn to joking about having sex and humanity = romance. every time michael interrupts or talks over jeremy instead of going out of his way to set a good example, i wince lol. encouraging them to stop thinking so much. ignoring every one of jeremy's soft "no"s because they're inconvenient. Here Are Our Stereotypical Nerd Spots and Here Is Your Mandated Giant Teddy Bear and Here Is My Secret Condom. (jeremy sprinted into the sunset before we got to that part and we all thank them for it.) jeremy never once having indicated that they wanted to actually have sex any time soon but michael did everything in his power to make sure the date would end that way without a single worry about what jeremy told them about chloe.
i don't think it's spoilers to clarify that michael was in the driver's seat for all of that, but was in a situation where he was very incentivized to listen to the SQUIP. and jeremy looooves squips so obviously the SQUIP is the expert on this, not michael :P
madeline offscreen: constant orgies, pretending to be from paris, scheming femme fatale madeline for the 2.3 seconds she was onscreen: i swear quebec is better than people give it credit for wait don't go-
jeremy's definition of breaking up with someone is, consistently, running away from an emotionally charged moment and convincing themself that they hate them. lol.
christine accusing jeremy of talking at her was also a direct response to the author trying to get on their wikipedia-level-of-philosophy-knowledge soapbox again. btw on that note, observation selection effect seems to only be mentioned in places as a synonym for the anthropic principle. it is more specific than how jeremy defines it, being an existential thing about how "the range of possible observations that could be made about the universe is limited by the fact that observations could happen only in a universe capable of developing intelligent life" (~ wikipedia <3). i get away with a lot of bullshit claims, some of them even intentionally bullshit, bc the character making those claims is reading even less of the wikipedia article than i am.
but that was transparently just a nod to the book being one of the many parallel universes that are foundational to how the squip works in canon
speaking of references that delight me and me alone, in-character phantom of the opera reference re: pageboy
i think all the main/supporting cast all think they're the main characters. except jeremy! not because of jeremy 1.0's insistence that he's not a leading man, but because they have been so busy with observing themself that they haven't even considered anyone else observing them and coming to different conclusions. (see: the PA system joke with michael which alerted the ENTIRE SCHOOOOooool 🎶 to their situation, which in jeremy's narrative, was just a gag as part of a longer fun flirty convo with michael, brought up for laughs and then forgotten.) (it's not like it's plot relevant as in that it doomed them or anything, but just a signal that not everyone perceives the fic events like jeremy does!!)
they're trying to learn to be less self-absorbed (and i'm not saying that as an insult so much as an accurate description of their default thought patterns) but it IS a learning curve. for all their self-reflection, i would describe them as a very reactive person, which is also probably why they (along with jeremy 1.0 and keanu squip) constantly struggle/d with needing a sense of control
im aware that despite christine's in-character criticism of the narrative i wrote 🙃 that she's here for exposition and emotional closure. she knows and she's not happy about it. it's a consequence of writing the story i wanted to tell but that doesn't make it immune from criticism. it's a good question for me, that the story i wanted to tell DID involve removing her agency so much. but i don't see that as a question that needs a direct answer or for me to defend so much as something to reflect on after it's over. in the meantime christine ma'am i'll give you something good in the epilogue i prommy, and i'll add something about this to my notes now that i think about it.

🤲 be vore chill thoughts, hand 'em over
Okay so it’s been a hot minute since I last saw the show so bare with me on this one lol. It might be a little all over the place
Jeremy...oh sweet Jeremy
He’s a pred through and through
I think that might be one of the reasons he got the squip actually
Because let’s face it, high schoolers would...not be kind about that sort of thing
I wanna say he might even be a shifter too cause that would just be cool lol
Boy can get big if he wants
It’s not something that happens often because he just doesn’t like doing it
But under large amounts of stress or other high emotions his hight might start to fluctuate a bit
As a pred he’s an absolute mess
Lots of fidgeting with whoever he’s got in his hands and non stop talking in an attempt to make things less awkward
King of mouthplay
Like, he doesn’t realize he’s doing it half the time, but he has this tendency to swish someone around in his mouth quite a bit
Doesn’t do much in the way of nibbling just cause that makes him nervous
But he’ll squish them to the roof of his mouth and suck on them a bit like candy
He also tends to swallow without much warning just because he forgets he should probably give one
His stomach is actually surprisingly roomy and not very loud or active
So it makes a great spot to hang out
Unless he’s nervous of course
Then it gets super loud and might squish whoever’s inside because of how tense he gets
I love Christine so much and defiantly think she’s a prey
Just, full prey through and through
And a really enthusiastic prey too
With friends she trusts she won’t hesitate to practically dive down their throats if she so desires
She’ll ramble on and on for ages about someone’s insides which greatly embarrasses poor Jeremy
Michael thinks it’s hilarious
I can see her as someone who really likes foodplay tbh
It’s gross and messy sure
But it’s fun too!
She especially likes being eaten with sweets like pudding
And drinks too
Catch her chilling in your cup of cocoa or coffee after you left it unattended for five minutes
She’s very good at calming down whoever she’s eaten by if they start stressing
Gal is a master of soft belly rubs and very sincere rambling encouragements
This is especially effective for cheering up Jeremy
She also loves spending time inside during sleepovers and you just can’t say no to those puppy eyes
Michael is the most chaotic switch in the world
But he prefers being eaten when it comes down to it
He spends so much time in Jeremy tbh
Especially in his mouth
He likes being fidgeted with and squished around for as long as Jeremy wants
He doesn’t like being swallowed before he’s had a chance to situate himself though so when that happens he’ll usually give Jeremy a little a kick once he’s down
Nothing hard, just a playfully annoyed action
He’s been known to hotbox when eaten lmao so if you wanna eat him maybe check to make sure he doesn’t have anything stashed on him
It makes Jeremy hiccup up smoke every time
He loves vibing with Christine inside Jeremy and they’ll team up to give him practically incapacitating belly rubs
It’s also prime hangout spot during sleepovers
I mentioned Michael is a switch and boy is he
He quite enjoys eating Christine from time to time and he’ll tease Jeremy about it
He’s very unembarrassed as a pred around close friends
Lots of lounging around with a visibly full belly and openly talking with whoever’s inside
He’s more prone to eating someone when he’s high just because
Well
He’s hungry lmao
He would eat Jeremy but since he’s a pred Christine becomes the primary snack
And she really doesn’t mind at all

a compiled list of all my best Jeremy Heere headcanons
hes ginger. if I wanna be closer to canon, I say he dyed it brown bc he was made fun of as a kid. if I'm not I just say he's ginger in the musical and they forgot to let him be ginger
he always likes playing characters with long range weapons in video games. he's less of a "go in fight this dude with a sword and bare hands" player and more of a "I have damn good aim and will nerf you from ten feet away" player.
his main thing he likes in a partner is confidence in themselves. he sees someone being unapologetically themselves and he's a goner
he gets crushes really easily, but usually they go away just as easily. if he likes a person more than three months he just realizes that no, this is A Thing Now and he has to deal with it
he had a tiny crush on michael when they were kids, but nothing ever came of it and they've both pretty much moved on from it. they kissed once just to see how it felt and then got too awkward. now they joke about it incessantly but it's not a real thing that would happen between them.
after the squip, jeremy doesn't like mint flavoured things. he didn't particularly like it beforehand, but he really, really hates it after.
him and jenna send each other terrible memes. they have a streak of a few months going.
a lot of his nerdy shirts from presquip got nerfed with his wardrobe change. he still tries to find them at the charity shops around, but he's kind of not hopeful about finding them all
his cardigan was the last decent gift from his dad before his mom left. after that, his dad started forgetting days of the week, much less when Jeremy's birthday was. they're better now, though.
jeremy has a very active fanfiction account dedicated to apocalypse of the damned. it's kind of impressive.
he played piano as a kid because his mom wanted him to, but he still uses his knowledge to learn video game soundtracks and other fun things
he has colour sound synesthesia, but he just didn't realize that's not how most people see things. when he got the squip, it got rid of that and he hated every second of it. he had a huge breakdown in the hospital because his synesthesia came back and it was a bit overwhelming.
once he hit college, he's kissed almost the entire friend group, except jenna. he definitely has preferences of who he likes
christine is one of his closest friends, and they love confusing the hell out of everyone else with musical talk.
he's always cold. even in summer. he usually has at least a long sleeve shirt on.
horror movies freak him the hell out, but he watches them with his friends and just pretends he doesn't absolutely jump at every scare.
he turns into absolute mush at the slightest pet name from any of his friends or crushes. christine called him jer One Time and he was blushing for hours.

Player 2: OMFG ***LOSERS
Ffs even autocorrevt thinks we're together
Michael snorted at his phone. Over two years of random classmates asking him if he and 'Anxious Twig' were dating and giggling in the halls whenever he'd throw his arm around Jeremy's shoulders and now predictive text was shipping them.
How funny. How cruel.
Player 1: Damn auto-correct... it's tryna keep ya on your toes
Player 2: Clearly
You know how many times I've almost typed thongs instead of things??

Player 1: Lmao hurry up in there your Sev Elev pizza is getting cold and you slushee is melting
It's in the cup holder getting blasted by the ac but that's only gonna keep it alive for so long
Player 2: Yeah yeah I'll be out in a few I need to run to the bathroom and very calmly Not drown myself in the sink
Player 1: Aight have fun don't die
Player 2: No promises

really it’s remarkable how much it’s like, my god, bmc’s doing all that & giving so much of [exactly what you could want] wherein it’s generally so rare to find / difficult to wring those things from just anywhere else, but here it’s so straightforward & permeating & Deliberate like well im overwhelmed & like
just one thing to touch on re: that sort of thing is bway agtikbi like, dear god. what a fun song, first of all, just on its own. the fact that jeremy & christine overall are So good which is an opinion but i’m right, and regardless of my also being right, i’m Discerning lol, like you Can Naught just throw a gesture at [romance] at me out here, swatting that shit away like cmon. don’t make me sit through this. but that we have these Displays of how like, this isn’t the sk8r boi [he was a boy she was a girl what more can i say] setup for like, why’s jeremy like this particular girl?? who knows??? & who cares b/c he’s some boy & she’s some girl so can i make it any more obvious???? like, she is Individually Characterized immediately like, she’s not the generic anygirl next door nor like oh the peak [performing femininity Correctly] girl anyone would be in love with, she’s also not even simply the like manic pixie dream girl(tm) situation when she’s really not even doing things “correctly” enough for that either, but even if you loosely categorize it thusly, here’s jeremy actually immediately being her mpdg in return lmao like she notices him, he’s immediately behaving in an elevated & dramatic way too, making a noise & fleeing the scene, like there’s Your attention-grabbing interest-capturing little weirdo too lmfao. the fact that in ilpr it’s a solo character portrait song but it’s also v relevant that jeremy’s there, jeremy has a role in christine’s arc the entire way here rather than like oh christine forever Simply Does Her Own Thing and jeremy gets to hitch his arc to this & get pulled along, like, she would’ve retreated to reading & waiting for rehearsal to actually start & then focused on going through that rehearsal, but it’s b/c of jeremy’s clear Interest & participation that she starts and then continues this song & gets increasingly fully Enthused & Expressive with it, she never is Just Being Herself(tm) fully, especially if there’s anyone else around and/or it’s not in the context of rehearsal or wherever else it’s safe to be so theatrical & enthusiastically so. and that they’re both just having a fantastic time lmao, the acting kills it so hard. like i’m always saying, if you can see those ilpr rehearsal / press day antics & Not be like “omg. them” then well alright but i don’t know how you manage it lmao
and i love how agtikbi is like, clearly a love song, and it’s a love song between christine and jeremy except also it’s Not, b/c christine’s singing about jake, except for the Very Straightforwardly About Jeremy “guess there’s a part of me that wants to / who knew??” section which, i like have to sit down, it’s So sweet lmao. and it’s that like, just like in ilpr there’s really still this indication that christine already Likes jeremy as well to a nonzero/increasing degree, but here she’s not even like engaging with the concept of “oh i guess i’m In Love With jeremy” b/c she’s instead engaging with “oh i guess i’m In Love With jake maybe possibly,” but the element of that closeness & affection & interest b/w her and jeremy organically manifests anyways, without a required conscious Romantic Narrative to it, actually (and stuff like this wherein it’s like, it’s already not the point of anyone’s arc that Being Eternal Romantic Soulmates saved the day rather than Being Ourselves Together / Via Mutual Support, but b/c it’s the latter that’s True throughout this story & is what matters, it doesn’t make sense to assume that jeremy & christine’s relationship is Nothing, or something superficial & insignificant at least, if for whatever reason they aren’t dating) like, that this Enthusiasm isn’t contingent on consciously focusing on one’s crush, and the enjoyment of their interactions isn’t either, when jeremy obviously v much knows he Likes christine, but she’s considering Liking jake, since that’s her way of venturing outside what she already knows & what she considers to be the rules & bounds by which she can remain safe enough / socially tolerated and maybe sometimes even move beyond to enjoying herself & being accepted. the Bowling Alley Performance Art interaction that leads into the scene like, my god. the moment when christine hugs herself to jeremy while singing about how she guesses a part of her likes to hang with him. i’m flipping out.
all this and the way that, of course, this is reprised as what’s now a straightforwardly romantic moment b/w christine and jeremy at the halloween party on the couch, when it’s this bookend of how like, okay, their forays into connecting with Popular People that followed agtikbi are fairly in shambles rn & they’re sure feeling worse for wear about that, but not yet fully [i suppose i’m having a crisis] about it, and of course this reprise Begins as specifically a reprisal of the “guess there’s a part of me that wants to / who knew?” sections of the original number, but wherein by contrast, with christine now more conscious of Liking Jeremy as well, the first line “it’s kinda killer to sit and chat with you” is now applying that word “Kinda” towards jeremy, like, now definitely actually considering how she might feel about him, romantically, rather than the titular Guy That I’d Kinda Be Into being jake, and of course that “kinda” then turns into “pretty” for the rest of the verses, and there’s no Guessing or “who knew?” tempering (addendum: that “who knew?” becomes “it’s true” in the reprise =‘] ). and of course the more downtempo & quiet execution, just like, in awe of that switch b/w off bway and bway where instead of getting bolder and more dramatic via a volume increase, jeremy stays as soft & downtempo when asking her out, like, help....that this Very Much Peak Love Song moment between the two, who have obviously been bonding over like, higher energy elevated spontaneity together, which is fantastic and which has already involved Vulnerability b/c neither of them are Just Like That with Just Anyone, as well as has been Real & Genuine since behaving in ways that seem weird / noticeably theatrical to others can sure be like that, but they also can have these moments of being vulnerable while very outside of both their elements or any guiding rails within a particular Situation, and they did just manage to again totally naturally have one of those especially spontaneous, elevated moments, despite both being unhappy & hiding out on this couch & uncertain where to go from here long term or short term, i don’t know what i’m supposed to say, just say what’s on your mind....and the Nd Communication / Socializing moments lmao, express yourself through some weird noise that’s improvised every afternoon or night, echo & build on that together & enjoy that completely, despite that it clearly doesn’t Fit In, but even once that moment of connection / particular exercise of that particular way of expressing themselves subsides, they’re able to have this interaction of even increasingly vulnerability / intimacy Within that subsided vibe, not propelled by peak spontaneous enthusiasm, but where like, the Emotional aspect is one that just as real & as close as ever even though it’s not happening with this peak Passionate Effusion of like, oh what must be Realest must be what’s most unfiltered & spontaneous & elevated, filters & hesitation / restraint / second-guessing & Not feeling “wow this is the most intense emotion i know, and i’m gonna just dive right into that and see where it takes me” must all lead people Away from what’s most genuine & right for them & etc etc. when that’s hardly true in general, and again from the like Neurodivergent For Neurodivergent angle b/w christine & jeremy, that’s another layer of how “um just be yourself :)” doesn’t mean everything and Being Yourself for real involves conscious effort rather than the shedding of that, and the fact that jeremy & christine’s relationship exists when they’re being fully spontaneous (which they can’t Just Do around anyone, anytime) And Also when they’re having this dialed back slower and quieter moment where it takes a little bit of back and forth to work up to saying something more direct....Augh
all that as kind of contextualizing leadup to Falling Over about the first agtikbi scene where it’s like good god they’re So precious already and that now it’s time for this banger of a song AND THEN when the section that Is truly directly more about christine and jeremy kicks in we have given the delightful chorus GLITTERY HEARTS with which to enhance the choreography and illustrate the apparent situation here and i personally am like leaning over clenching a fist like holy shit jesus christ i can’t believe bmc gives us so much so straightforwardly. and then the agtikbi reprise comes along and that’s yet another thing i crumple & explode over. thank you so much ;m;

Yeah i went again on sunday and really wanted to cry after because it's over forever Q_Q i am inconsolable but for the fact that there may be a halloween party... but uhhhhhhh anyway here's what I noticed this time!!
(also here's the notes from my first time for reference [x])
Ad libs:
Final show energy & lots of ad libs! Which were apparently real unscripted ad libs!! A lot of them were just little things (so I can't recount most of them) but they were very very good. the blorbos became real people for a second there
When Rich is looking for Mountain Dew Red at the party, Jenna appears and says "I have Mountain Dew Blue?" and he explodes at her (possibly "Not now, Jenna!")
When Christine and Jeremy talk together at the party, they're sitting on beanbags; after they get scared off by the skeleton guy, they're laughing and crawling back to their seats - Christine, through laughter: "oh where's the beanbag...."
Changes (?)
VIMH: Rich: "The ladies are gonna get to know the real Richard Goranski... And the dudes." Then he stares into the distance for like 30 seconds (a very long time), making calculating gestures in the air (like the woman with math meme) before going "Oh. My god............... I am totally bi!"
Maybe wrong, but I swear there was a wind part added to the middle of Michael in the Bathroom??? I thought it might be a flute or digital flute..... but as a flautist I might be projecting.....
The Play: Multiple thin green lights flickered down on people as they got squipped, with a cute video game chime sound. But fairly certain this was always there and I just noticed it this time lmao
Smartphone Hour: Background acting on the little platform at the very back of the stage: a scooby-doo esque chase sequence where a firefighter rushes on from SR and disappears SL (implied Jake's house is SL); the fireman reappears with Jake in his arms and runs back SR to safety. Then Jake runs back across to get something from his house and the fireman is trying to stop him. Then Jake runs back out of the house holding a teddy bear he saved from the fire; the fireman is chasing him back out of the house. It was fucking hilarious 10/10 especially because I couldn't be sure if it was a new addition or if I just completely filtered it out last time like a basketball gorilla dslfjdslfk
Also on Jake: between the teddy bear and the Upgrade scene (also detailed by Dani) where he's talking about archery while holding a plush duck - unsure dramaturgically if it's supposed to be a real dead duck or a toy, but anyway.... Jake who likes stuffies??? IDK if I buy it but I don't know enough about Jake to NOT buy it and its also a very fun headcanon I think so it's going on the pile for me. he can collect plushies with jeremy as far as im concerned dsljfsdkfjs
Oh yeah Jeremy also had a big white duck plush on his bed. edit: this is actually a seagull plush! Its name is Katie and it belongs to stage crew member Anya!
More details I saw this time
General
Christine actor was actually amazing she has this giggly honk voice she uses when being like obnoxiously loud and silly and idk how to describe it but such intense LOUD SILLYGIRL ENERGY. A little different than the chris im used to and it was fun to see another version of her!!
Maybe I'm insane but I think Christine also pronounced Jeremy kinda like 2 syllables (Jare - me). This extremely slight difference somehow led to me perceiving her singing "Is he worth it? Germyyyyyyy!" IDK Sorry Jaclyn if you are reading this ldksfjdlsk
Lots of times when Jeremy is talking about becoming cool he does little hip gyrations (think Rich at the urinal i guess but more subtle)
Jeremy does this thing where he holds his hand bent stiff with his fingers all together and taps hard on his right temple to express some kind of frustration with the SQUIP- e.g. when he's trying to get the SQUIP to turn on after the first day; during the end of the Halloween party, etc. Actually it very much has the same conceptual energy as "C'c'c'come on....." now that I think about it
Michael blows a cloud of smoke during a few of his entrances (MTS and maybe Halloween - or that was Dustin maybe)
He also uses a vape pen I think? When he says 'we gotta get stoned in my basement'
Preshow montage
Before the show, there's a montage of screenshots from the teens' lives on the back wall --- that is, their selfies and their text convos. Pretty sure the texts were that gossip submitted by fans? I only remember two:
"i heard that guy who wears hoodies all the time only listens to weezer" <- (I only noticed this one 'cause it KILLED ME honestly I feel like Jeremy would love Weezer and Michael would hate it sdjkfljdsf ) edit: this text was submitted by @/thesquirrelqueer!
I don't remember who was on which side, but Brooke or Chloe sending Chloe or Brooke a big comforting text after her breakup and making plans to go get ice cream I think?
MTS
"Dad haven't you ever heard of privacy?" He says this while putting on his belt after the opening.
Jeremy's actually gesturing towards his locker for like the entire conversation between Brooke, Chloe, Jenna; when they notice him finally it kinda looks like he's just pointing at them and that's part of why they think he's weird I think?
M: "Humanity has stopped evolving!" Jeremy then takes like 20 seconds of looking confused before going (approximately) "is that supposed to be good...?"
"Christiiiiiine Canigula!" Each Christine section he eventually (around 3rd time) starts using this fanboy totally-losing-his-mind-over-this voice which is REALLY hard to describe but i'll try: like lower & less articulate, like how it sounds when you raise your soft palate (?), and going up at the end kind of laugh-like like he's really excited. (For a bmc reference maybe sounds a little like will roland's tone in i even got some blood flowing / with no computer screen around). Anyway i'm not gonna lie it did make him sound really lame jsdlkfjdsf
"Why can't someone just help me out?" As Jeremy sings this bridge it's all dark except for a light on him. Students line up chairs behind him and sit down. At this line, two guys walk forwards on either side and touch his shoulders (looking kind of solemn / sympathetic) , and guide him back to sit in the chair in the middle. Then the lights come up on everyone and more group choreo wheeee
Post-ILPR MTS reprise
Christine: "Sorry, Jeremy, did you say something?" -> after this scene, she runs off giggling loudly, apparently glad to not be interrupted and VERY visibly excited about Jake asking her out
Jeremy sings "I don't wanna be special / Don't even want to survive...." (Instead of usual "Don't even need to survive.") Not sure if it was intentional but it happened at both shows I saw and made me sad both times noooooo........... guy...........
Squip song
Rich actually rubs his hands all over Jeremy's face (in addition to his arms)
"Top secret can't even look it up on the internet type shit": Rich looks to the side and mimes a rectangle (computer screen) then mimes typing where the keyboard would be
2PG
"I don't want that to be my future! Sad, and alone, and ... " - The music cuts out at "sad" instead of at the beginning of this line.
On their relationship in general, I think Michael irritates Jeremy more than fanon typically has it lol. Very excitable Michael who kinda lacks volume control (in several scenes - including VIMH even after Jeremy tells him to be quieter). Constructive interference of autism etc etc
(Again fun to see this!! as a jeremy stan i am definitely guilty of making michael a godlike perfect friend to jeremy and like.. no... they don't actually mesh that well even just in the script!! Often times Jeremy doesn't understand or care about the things Michael says. So yeah absorbing this into my headcanons now thank you)
Also back wall was this like vaporwave looking low-poly 2 person first person shooter game footage (think wolfenstein but with a very different aesthetic - purple and blue, and i think with some objects depicted in mesh).
BMC P1
When Jeremy's spasming on the ground (last time I thought he looked mostly in pain - this time he was vibrating a bit more like he lost muscle control) - local build-a-bear employee Jared Kleinman (JARED KLEINMAN...) and some other people start filming him.
Jared keeps filming him through the scene until SQUIP: "All they see is you having an animated conversation... with yourself." Jeremy turns and notices him; Jared doesn't stop filming but just waves at him nonchalantly (in a mocking way like hey buddy welcome back to reality)
Jared also has a BaB apron and BaB backpack on (or a bear sticking out of his backpack i dont remember). Pretty sure he also had a bear with him in another scene, probably Halloween?
"Lookin pretty sexy, brooke" -- says it in like a low Elvisy voice (like will connolly)
BMC P2
"Everything about you is going to be wonderful" -- Jeremy rolls up his cardigan sleeves so they're just below the elbow. (One of them slipped back down and he put it up again but I didnt think it was intentional lol). I was surprised how much instantly cooler that made him look but maybe that's just because my older brother wears his sleeves like that ljdsfkdsfklsfdlk
......also note that MICHAEL usually wears his sleeves rolled up like that in this production.... inch resting.....
MTS reprise
When the lights first come up, Jeremy is snoring with his head hanging off the side of the bed. He stops breathing for a second, then jerks awake.
GTIKBI
Chris: "I know you and Jake used to date...." Chloe and Brooke simultaneously go "Oh my god, no!!!" --- Chloe to Christine (mockingly), meanwhile Brooke is unrelatedly browsing her phone and says it in distress because she (implied) has just seen that Eminem died. As convo continues, Brooke sits next to another student (Leo Collins?) and shows them the article. (She still says 'yeah jake is so gross' to Chloe, just sounding upset)
Upgrade
I ALREADY SAID THIS BUT JEREMY AND BROOKE WERE SO CUTE TOGETHER JLKSDFLDFSJ. I decided to only watch them during this song (/ _ \) Based on their acting when they walked near the stage stairs, they had climbed to the back of the bleachers and were walking precariously on the outside of the railing - specifically, they went over the stair railings - first Brooke and she teeters a bit and jokingly pretends like she's gonna fall off; Jeremy goes under the rail, comes up on the other side and does a gesture like *tada!*. Then they sit down together and are talking and its just really cute. making me ship puppy love over here jdsifojdslkfdjsflk
Halloween
Michael was at the dance in costume - during a certain point (I think right before Rich starts losing it) Michael gets lost out of the group choreo, seems to be stressed out and runs off stage (presumably to the bathroom)
One of the guys is dressed up like Guy Fieri and it's really good. Like I remember last time I even had a moment where I realized I was interpreting this actor as playing The Real Guy Fieri At Jake's Halloween Party. Also in MITB he uses his hat (which is a combo of visor and fake hair) to knock on the door.
DYWH
Chloe: "...rock this baby fast asleep" then, laughing: "Goo goo ga ga!!" and she kinda topples onto him. The actress said she got this from the West End production!
When Jeremy says "I can't stand up." It was kind of implied it's because he has an erection not because his legs are frozen; right before this line he stands up then sits down and puts a pillow in his lap. Either way though ig it was still the SQUIP stopping him (S: "you're welcome.")
GTIKBI reprise
as Dani pointed out, Christine was sitting kinda numbly on the beanbag with headphones on; she takes them off when Jeremy starts talking to her.
Voices in my Head
Jeremy's wearing an X-Men shirt!
Re: expensive headphones - Michael's rubbing Rich's shoulders (???) when he says "I'm sure someone would be lucky to have you" (and then of course he still says but not meeeee while sending him flying)
"Throw you a rope home slice if you need some dope advice" Jake fist bumps with Jeremy (or equivalent gesture i dont remember)
Stagedorks kiss: after C says yes, they walk to the center of the stage. Jeremy rushes forwards and puts his hands on her cheeks (i think?) to pull her into a kiss. They separate, beat, then Christine goes forwards again and they have a long slow kiss while the ensemble keeps dancing and singing around them.
Not intentional i dont think but Patrick the Jeremy actor was crying a bit at the end /( T_ T \ )
OK YEAH i might add more to this if I remember and/or edit it back into the first post...... but hope that was fun to read????

Tumblr media
Now is the time on Sprockets where we unpack the experience. Pictured above: me still thinking about Jordan being like eye level with Emilie whenever she was sitting down and he was kneeling.
The knowledge that it is HIGHLY unlikely I will ever see another trio where I love each of them that much…a weighty realization. Blessed though.
The absolute manic energy that overtook me as I approached an hourly worker like myself during a wishful Majestic Theatre vibe check a smooth…fifteen minutes (?) before the Sunday matinee. I did wait until he was done assisting ppl and then he turned to me and it was more or less:
“Hi! So sorry to bug you, I was wondering if there are any understudies* on today?”
“Oh yeah there’s hella understudies!” (he said that, he was super nice!)
“Oh, amazing, are any of them the Phantom, Christine, or Ra—“
“The Phantom is an understudy!”
“Oh! Is it—is it Jeremy St—“
“It is Jeremy Stolle.”
Tumblr media
* The leads are currently all very strong of course but since I had seen Ben before and he has some really great understudies, in addition to hoping to possibly see Elizabeth or Kanisha or Bronson — it just seemed like there was a decent chance over the time I was there of getting to see one of a long list of people I’d be thrilled about, with such a solid main cast that it would be hard to go wrong.
Having a Normal One: taking your seat at a Sunday matinee when you saw that same show the actual night before. It is what it is.
I was so sad to miss Emilie in November, and had said I would Get On A Plane for Jordan Donica. So as excited as I would have been for the others, it was such a genuine delight to see them both twice. And then Jeremy was out here saying “fOoLe” and doing The Strolle so…
If you do see The Strolle & more in person I highly recommend seeing it with a like-minded friend/friends. We were clearly not going to yell in the theatre like — respect the cast, respect the other patrons, that said I’m not going to apologize for grabbing @emotionalmotionsicknessxx because I think it was the same amount of “I am grabbing your arm/softly hitting you so I will not audibly act up” although I know I whispered “no” a lot of times.
The way he was touching the sheet music at the beginning of first lair was untoward I don’t even know. He put his hand on her stomach during PONR. He was being chaotic on the bench. His “make your choice” broke me as a person. Also it was STRESSFUL to be sitting off to the side in our own little box because we could see Jeremy waiting behind the angel as Jordan Donica is mere feet below him being an absolute MENACE. Where is a person supposed to look?! (At Jordan and Emilie, mostly, but even though of course we know the phantom is there it was cool to be able to see him!)
When have I said a Raoul was a menace? Never! Nor will I ever again. Also great view of Emilie’s face acting at certain points, like “Twisted Ever Way” and this is the second time I ever teared up during “Wishing.”
Emilie and Jordan sound so lovely on that “anywhere you go—“ part in AIAOY and the only other time I ever really stopped to take notice of that is some Hugh audios with Sara Jean Ford and Sean MacLaughlin so — idk it’s a lovely song but rarely do I say “oh hello?!”
It is a matter of GREAT doctrinal import to know that the Pew Pew Stick simply did not work during Wandering Child and these two men responded by getting…Big N Loud at each other. Like more than they were already. Which…both of them are already deep-voiced and quite tall so honestly a blessing I was able to CLING to a friend at that moment as I was in danger of being sent to the astral plane.
And Jeremy did say Fathering Gaze. He said it. He said the thing.
Tumblr media
Lived my best clown life that day. That was it, that was the pinnacle.
I will have to talk more about Emilie another time. She was just wonderful. Gotta get the right words together but…I would even go see it just for her if you can. I mean yes catch Jordan if you can, I hope he comes back, but Emilie’s Christine is something really really special.

DP Episode/Fanfic idea (part 3? Musical edition): [probably titled 'Old Friends' because I'm unoriginal]
Episode would start in normal fashion; Sam and Tucker arguing about something. Danny is very much done with their BS. He tries to calm them both down with little luck.
In the background there's two male-looking ghosts arguing about arrangements and money versus fame, with a third ghost just sighing and plugging their ears.
Next 'scene' is Mr. Lancer announcing there was gonna be a new school musical [yes, it's that kind of episode] and auditions will be held later. Oh, and everyone should audition because whoever is in the musical gets extra credit (because of course)
The Trio are like "no way are we doing that, who has time" but then the new director and chorus teacher is...the two male ghosts. They look human enough, and I guess the school is tight in staff so sure. So...Danny is resigned to audition to see if there up to scheming and hey, bonus there’s extra credit on the line (he would fight them but after dealing with all the Rogues he's learned he may as well hear them out before sucking them up...also he's tired so sue him]
Anyway, at the auditions where his whole grade plus the theater kids are there. And the teachers are already arguing. Tucker tried finding out who they were -- Mr. Shepherd and Mr. Baum, famous composing and lyricist duo. One went on to score a lot of films and create amazing soundtracks, the other more niche known, but still famous in his own right. They both actually were great friends until something happened (no one knows what) -- unfortunately they died around the same time, both still angry at each other (”well, that’s obvious,” says Sam, watching them bicker).
And then they announce the musical, “Be More Chill,” since it’s “more kid appropriate, you know?” [”We should be more daring, Frankie, why not Beauty and the Beast? or Les Mis?” “Bobbie, you want them interested in the content, not begging for death. Besides, we can’t afford the rights.”]
Turns out, these ghosts powers are being able to make other sing to their best potential, and figuring out who fits the right part. Whether or not they want to be involved (Mr. Lancer does not want to play a teacher in this. He will be playing the Teacher AND Jeremy’s dad. He will not be having pants in this. yes he is upset about this).
So Danny gets up there, says he really can’t sing so he’s ok with the background or whatever. “Kid, just sing,” Mr. Shepherd sighs, “We’ll tell you where to go.”
Welp. Turns out Danny can sing. This is news to everyone. And then Baum goes, “He feels right for Jeremy.” and Franklin goes, “You’re right, ok you’re now Jeremy.”
Danny is not happy.
Tucker somehow gets Michael. He could NOT sing. Now they know the ghosts are doing this somehow.  They can’t figure out who Christine can be (i can’t either whatever).
Anyway, this continues with the two directors fighting at the same time as the trio are also fighting. It takes the third ghost from the beginning coming in and explaining what caused the fight, and how they were tired of always trying to be the glue to hold them together.
Feels, musicals, and chills. All that good stuff.

been thinking about how misogyny plays a huge role in why chloe is Like That ™️ (this isn't necessarily a defense on her, more of a character analysis)
see, as the 'two hottest girls in school' both chloe and brooke are heavily objectified. if you're a popular teenage girl boys are going to try to take advantage of you and girls are going to be jealous of you. but nobody stands up to chloe but everybody walks all over brooke. because chloe is mean and brooke is not. chloe went totally overboard with the alpha bitch role as a defense mechanism, survival strategy, whatever, and it fucked her up. and as a result she has this weird obsession about being nice. she pretends to be nice all the time (see: her reaction to jake breaking up with her in the broadway run, her confronting christine before play rehearsal etc etc) and of course, the "Everybody always likes Brooke. Why is that, because she's nice? I can be nice, I can be so goddamn nice!"- she really can be, people just won't let her be.
and i feel like this ties in with how she treats brooke, too. brooke is nice and people like her and chloe is jealous of that. but at the same time brooke is nice and people hurt her and chloe doesn't like seeing that. not only is chloe protective of brooke and wants her to 'grow out' of being the doormat, brooke reminds her of herself before she became the 'mean girl' and her self-hatred makes her lash out at her. it's beyond complicated. it's messy. it's fucked up. i am not defending chloe's actions but i am saying that she's technically a victim too.
that's not the only thing misogyny did to her. another issue chloe has is that she objectifies herself way too much. all she does is try to get boys' attention. she tries to get back at jake, she tries to get with jeremy, and she does that through a very inappropriate way (aka dywh) because as far as she knows that's all she's worth. she's the hottest girl at school, people know her for her looks, her body. she boasts about having 'had sex in pretty much every room in jake's house' and she kisses jeremy after he says she's 'the hottest girl in school'. it's messed up that she assumed a guy commenting on her looks meant he wanted to get with her. i also think her severe slutshaming toward madeline is because of her self-hatred about these issues.
and lastly, during sync up, the squip says that chloe is 'obsessed with status because she's afraid of losing it'. this is yet another example of how the Popular Kids are lost in the personas that they seemingly made up themselves but really were forced onto them. it might have started out as a role they willingly played for whatever reason but as time goes by there's no stepping out of the expectations people have for them.
anyway i like to think chloe's squip being herself opened her eyes to how much of a shitty person she was and led to her genuinely apologizing to the people around her
uh. idk how to wrap this up. thanks for coming to my ted talk. or something.
