So... I know it's been a million years since I've watched Highlander the Series, and I'm over it by now but I have to go into detail about what nonsense the two part finale was. This is about how ooc and absurd everyone was in Duncan's deadish fantasy so I will try not to drag him too much unnecessarily.

Let's start with Amanda, there is a big difference between a thief and a serial murderer. If she had not met Duncan and fallen in "love" with him would she have married a lot of rich men and stolen their money? Sure, why not. Would she have killed them? Not likely and the idea that Duncan singlehandedly saved her from being entirely evil is gross

Joe Dawson, you expect me to believe this man was so inspired by Duncan of all people/immortals that he just did not let the trauma of war effect him? If he never had the opportunity to stalk Duncan he would be homeless and an alcoholic? Ridiculous

Methos, now this guy used to be the absolute worst, the scum of the earth just for fun and to feel powerful, he changed, renounced violence and decided to live life hiding and minding his own business (note that realistically this change didn't happen over night, it took years of diligent hard work) and he did all of this without Duncan's influence. He is a thousand years old he knows that people die, he has been dealing with it for many lifetimes. Would he be so upset over the betrayal and death of his girlfriend that he just reverts back to being the worst? No. When his old friend with whom he used to commit atrocities found him and wanted to get back to it, would he just go along with it because he couldn't manipulate Duncan into killing him for him? No, he would fight and die trying or again run and hide, both of those outcomes would be more likely

Richie Ryan, his story almost made sense, I could buy that he with no other options continued his life of crime, got caught, ran, and died young without Duncan's influence. He could have become immortal and had to run from a bunch of bad guy immortals trying to kill him (but how likely is it really that no other decent immortal would see this poor young man, clueless and struggling and want to take him under their wing? as so many other immortals did for all of the other immortals in the show?) until he was taken in by some "nice" bad guy immortals (not Methos, as we've already established) and been further corrupted. the "nice" bad guy immortals could have asked him to kill an innocent person for their own agenda and Richie Might try but wouldn't be able to go through with it, however though Richie was a bit trusting and naive, he was not an idiot and would not have gone back to the "nice" bad guys after failing to fullfil such a request, he would have run again and if he had to have died again anyway (nonsense) they could have found and killed him later (no)

Tessa, don't even get me started on the horrible, gross, entirely appalling implication that it was better for her to have died young and having been loved by Duncan than to have gotten married and had children and lived because her husband was mean and she stopped making art (it was stated clearly and more than once she wanted children but gave up that dream for Duncan)

So...I've been thinking of doing a Highlander the Series rewatch on Youtube? I know this is an incredibly niche and practically prehistoric corner of fandom, but it's been brewing in my head for a while and I though it'd be fun to do.

I was also thinking about how I was also in the gen section of a hugely slash fandom, and I was thinking as I roll into season 2 of the series I might ask other members of the fandom, especially those who were lovers of the Duncan/Methos pairing to join me in certain episodes, just to get a wider flavour of the viewer experience of the time. I was thinking that I would post it as both a video & audio?

What do you guys think? I won't ask if you guys think there is an audience for this because I know there is only about five people who would actively watch this but, for those five people, would it be something you'd like to see?

Probably second most popular in the history of Escapade slash con is that staple of 90s slash fandom, Highlander: The Series.

Highlander was, in many ways, the perfect fandom: tons of fodder for a couple of big ships that kept it active but also lots of other characters and worldbuilding to explore when you wanted variety.

It shot half the year in Vancouver and half in Paris where gorgeous historical monuments added a shitton of production value you won’t find in most genre shows of the era. The combat was also a cut above: most of these actors know what they’re doing with a sword, and it really shows.

The soundtrack is by Queen, guys, oh my god.

Seriously, if you ever think about checking out oldschool fandoms, Highlander is the one to pick!

All those hot men menacing each other with the cutlery launched a thousand slash fics. Once Methos, sometime wimpy researcher, sometime suuuuper evil world conqueror, was introduced, you could hear the sucking vacuum sound as slash fans vacated every other fandom of the day. There’s a Lord Byron episode where he takes Polidori’s role and lounges in frilly period clothing, for fuck sake!

There are a million rarer character ships too, including one with that guy who played Krycek on the X-Files. (Shut up: he’s great!)

You wouldn’t know it from looking at AO3 today, but this was also a huge fandom for het, both with canon women and OFCs. Amanda, immortal thief and all around pain in the ass (Cf. that photo above of her pulling an arrow out of MacLeod’s butt) was a particular favorite even within slash fandom, inspiring the lulzy comment: “That’s not het: that’s Amanda”.

If you think I maybe ship the Duncan/Methos/Amanda OT3, you’d be exactly right. This was one of the earliest big OT3s I saw in fandom and one that set the classic pattern of slightly uptight cinnamon roll moral center/2 morally gray troublemakers that I’ve seen repeated a thousand times since.

(A pause for all of the Duncan fans to hotly contest the idea that he was ever uptight.)

I can think of no better introduction to the series than Killa’s awesome vid from Escapade 2015, Let the Day Begin.

Another interesting thing about Highlander is that it’s one of the only (and earliest) times I can remember fandom thirsting for a visibly disabled character. Silver fox Joe Dawson is a double amputee and subject of a lot of horny fics.

The actor lost his legs in a car accident, the character in a suitably melodramatic war experience that led him to being a Watcher--yes, this is the same cheesy fun as Anne Rice or Buffy Watchers, and MacLeod becoming besties with his stalker is one of my favorite parts of the series.

The fact that Methos, world’s oldest immortal and super badass warrior, is currently hiding out as a dorky researcher for them and is also Joe’s buddy makes it even better. Joe runs a cool bookstore in Paris as his cover, as if we needed more reasons to lust after him!

Unlike many fandoms of yore, Highlander is still going strong. Its holiday exchange, HLH Shortcuts still runs every year. It’s nothing like the juggernaut it once was, but new fanworks still regularly appear on AO3.

All a piece of cake to a thief of Amanda’s caliber, and most places didn’t even count as a challenge anymore. Except for the Louvre - that was a high unlike any other. She still thrived on the thrill of breaking and entering, and no matter how many lectures or eye rolls or heavy sighs Duncan gave her, it wasn’t like she was ever going to stop.
