for those who know, im taking some liberties with Baron Samedi, basically building him and Maman Brigitte a little more than what we got in American Gods. The Baron is harder to make my own without crossing some boundaries, much like it was hard to make Zikala my own character as respectfully as I can, as voodoo is a closed religious practice.
for those who don't, I hope you enjoy and appreciate the research im putting into these characters like Zikala and Baron Samedi (who will be in this new chapter). Both Lakota spiritual practices and Voodoo are closed, so I'm not delving into detail with them, but the locations that my story has taken my characters and the locations that American Gods has taken us at least allowed me to touch on them.
when i (inevitably) rewrite this down the road, Zikala and (if hes included) the Baron will be heavily heavily researched to include more culturly appropriate representation and a more indepth look into who they represent in their repeative practices so as to be as respectful as i possibly can.
i hope you guys enjoy the upcoming chapter. its coming together nicely.

James Bond as a franchise is known by most people. However if you're like me, you have never seen any of the movies or read any of the books. Until now. But seriously before this my only experience with 007 was playing Goldeneye on the N64.
While Ian Fleming didn't create the spy fiction genre, these kind of stories boomed during the first World War, during the peaceful period, then World War II made it even grander. It was after WWII ended that Fleming decided to write Casino Royale with one of the most boring and bland characters imaginable; James Bond, he actually is said to have named him and made his personality to be boring but everyone fell in love.
Tumblr media
Casino Royale was a wonderful book. Just over 200 pages, the important is minimal (James Bond, his boss M, CIA agent Leiter, Ladyfriend who becomes more than friend Miss Lynd, and the villain/SMERSH/Soviet agent Le Chiffre)
A simple and easy story where M sends James on a mission with an insane amount of taxpayer dollars from the treasury to a casino in France. Le Chiffre, for story reasons, is at the casino trying to earn money to fund SMERSH, a Soviet organization that wants to get rid of all spies...by employing agents to then go out and sabotage intelligence agencies. Using spies to kill spies, alright.
James is sent with taxpayer dollars to the casino not to kill Le Chiffre, but to out-gamble him and make him broke. I enjoy that it's not a hit and run, and the high-stake baccarat scene is wonderful. Yes there's a car chase, and someone who double crosses Bond, and takes more then the daily recommended dose of sleeping pills, but the Casino scene with natural, baked in suspense, added onto the fact that if he loses, not only is James broke, but all the taxpayer money goes to the other side. and the rules of baccarat are explained in the novel, so who wants to play?
Casino Royale is great. A simple meal well made, strong reccomendation.

And then there's 'Live and Let Die.'
I enjoy the premise. It is the second book in the series. that stakes are raised, he goes to New York, then St Petersburg Florida, then Jamaica. The villain is a highly educated Half French/Haitian called Mr Big, who lives in Harlem and is a crime boss. Also works for SMERSH and was laundering pirate loot so that the organization could have more money. Presumably because they lost so much at the gambling tables.
Also an interesting note to the villain, is he has taken Haitian voodoo and superstition and made his followers/groundmen believe he is a zombie; that is, a husk of a body brought back to life and needing to obey the one who summoned it. Who "summoned" Mr Big then? The story he made up is that Baron Samedi did, the Baron being a Lwa/Loa/Loi/Spirit Deity of the dead (death, tombs, gravestones, drinking, spirits- the dead kind or alcoholic?- and fertility. Mr Big sadly does not use this aspect.) Upset Mr Big and you upset the God of the Dead.
The aquarium break-in was fun and how they hid the coins was, to me, really cool. You see the ruthlessness of Mr Big as a mob boss when he gets his people to shoot up a train car, feed someone to a shark, and break James's finger, for funsies.
While I don't find the story bad, you can absolutely tell this book was written in the 50's by a British white man nonetheless. Save for Mr Big and the new Ladyfriend Solitaire all of the "colored folk" as James calls them talk like the romantic couple you see in the image above. While Ring Shout did that as well, is wasn't to as sever of a degree, and was done by someone of that ethnicity. Also the fact that every African American was superstitious and believed the rumor of Baron Samedi, reads to me like dark skinned people are not that intelligent and can be easily swayed by fear or rumors. Not one person doubted? Seriously? Sure, Ian Fleming came from a different time, societal norms were different. But it's not something I can really brush over. Read Casino Royale, if you wanna read Live and Let Die then go for it, but I know which one is my favourite.

Look them up you will find they have appeared in American media. Also I am not white you dumbass ignorant bitch. Seriously, you guys who think just because you disagree with something means you are white, privileged and lack understanding. I understand that these developers know to pander to lazy dumbasses like you who will eat up crap. You guys thinking white is boring are the real boring ones. It’s because you see white people as a monolith when in reality they are diverse. And interesting enough one can be made as well for other cultures we lumped into one group.  Kratos is not black. He is greek. Kratos does not have the facial features of a black person. Furthermore both his parents are white greeks. His mom is a Greek woman and his father is She's, the Greek god of thunder and very much white. This is what we talk about when we talk about people attributing identity politics in games. Kratos is clearly not black, but to try to finish the criticism of Angraboda being black when it does not fit in the Norse Myth. God of war ragnarok having Thor be fat and Angraboda black is clearly the pushing of identity politics by the games director. Furthermore, the reason the god of war trilogy is held in such high regard is it respects Greek mythology and is as close as you can get to the Greek mythology without copying the narrative. The only liberties taken are with the introduction of the character Kratos and the narrative is tweaked to fit in Kratos as a character. The problem with Ragnarok is with the deviation from the Norse Myth with some of the character designs.

Baron Samedi [or Baron Satudray], is one of the loa of Haitian Vodou. Samedi is a loa of the dead, along with Baron's numerous other incarnations Baron Cimetière, Baron La Croix and Baron Kriminel. He is the head of the Guédé family of loa. His wife is the loa Maman Brigitte.

Welcome to the February American Gods Challenge!
This month, let’s think about the five love languages. Not sure what a love language is? It’s based on a book from 1992. “It outlines five general ways that romantic partners express and experience love, which Chapman calls "love languages". They are acts of service, gift-giving, physical touch, quality time, and words of affirmation.” You can also take a quiz to find your own here!
You can look at romantic love, friend love, familial love, god/worshipper love, whatever you’d like. What would Technical Boy give as a gift? How would Mx. World tell you they appreciate you? Czernobog is gruff, but he’s got a soft spot hidden away for those he respects. How do Maman Brigitte and Baron Samedi show each other they care? Salim and Laura have a tender friendship that would be great to explore too! Shadow and Cordelia are also looking like they’re going to be allies this season. There’s lots to explore!
Be sure to use the tag #american gods february challenge or #ag february challenge on your creation!

Main Character for the novel I’m writing. Arcell!  I drew him and the other two main characters as part of a triptych to get a better more consistent sense of their designs. Getting closer and happier with the style slowly!

It is quite interesting to see how differently the book and the television series treat the Loas from the Vodou religion.
In the television series, we see the Loas in flesh and blood, as human-like beings, embodiment of the typical appearances given to them.
Yet in the novel, Neil Gaiman kept a fundamental aspect of the vaudou practices - the riding. For those of you that don’t know it, in the vodou religion, when you invoke a loa, said loa will take possession of a person in the assembly, and they will “ride” them like a horse, making them act like... well, like themselves. And in the novel, the loas never appear as entities by themselves (except in the Backstage), in our world they always manifest by “riding” humans.
