The excitement seemed to hum through the air at Longbourn in preparation for the upcoming assembly at Meryton. Lydia and Kitty ran through the house in a sing-song about the evening's impending dancing and frivolity that awaited them. Mary sat at the pianoforte plunking out a sour tune. Lizzy curled Jane's lovely locks and Beatrice sat in a room by herself, drawing the landscape from the view of her window seat, humming a tune to herself as she went sketched.

It was not that Beatrice Bennet disliked assemblies. In fact, she found them rather gay; but like her sister Jane, Beatrice was painfully shy about the opposite sex. Except, Beatrice was far worse. If a man so much as looked her direction, her cheeks would flush and words fled her mind. She wished she was half as witty as Lizzy when it came to such matters or that her beauty and grace might make up for her lack of words, like Jane. Instead, she was simply forced to muddle her way through, much to the dismay of her mother. Beatrice feared she was forever going to be a burden to her father.

Beatrice knew she should be readying herself for the assembly, but there would be no one there she wanted to impress. Almost all the gentlemen that would be in attendance already had their eyes set on a woman. Well, all but the two unmarried gentlemen newly arrived in the area.  Mama hoped that Jane would catch the eye of one of the gentlemen.  But Beatrice had heard through the grapevine that the other man was rather dour.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I’ve done several angsty one-shots haha. Most people seem to react the strongest to Fading (Tony Stark x Reader, Soulmate AU), and also To Outrun Fate (Peter Maximoff x Reader, Soulmate AU).

I’m noticing a theme in my angst. Hm. Maybe I shouldn’t be allowed to write Marvel Soulmate fics.

Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Not yet, but I daydream crossovers a lot haha.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yeah lol. I called them out for it and the commenter then backtracked, deleted the comments, and said it was their sister. I still don’t fully believe that to this day, but whatever. Second chances and all.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Nope, not my thing. I will very very vaguely imply it on occasion, if I think it’s important to the plot, but it’ll only ever be a fade to black kind of thing.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Luckily no. I think it’s because I mostly write series, and one shots are the thing that people steal the most. Also smut, which I don’t write, so nothing much to steal from me.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, though I had someone ask once. I turned it down at the time, because I like to keep all of my works on my own page. But in the future I might be open to making one of those collaborative works on Ao3 so that both names are attached to it.

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Every time someone asks this, I immediately forget everything I ever shipped lol. Off the top of my head, Dramione, WinterWidow (Bucky x Natasha), Sifki (Loki x Sif), TaserTricks (Loki x Darcy), and Yennskier (or is it Jaskefer? Jaskier x Yennefer anyways). Then I ship one of my OCs with Peter Parker, and in an AU I ship her with Peter Maximoff.

As you can see, I’m a multi shipper lol.

And of course I ship myself with many many characters 😏 Basically, if I’ve written for them, it’s probably because I ship myself with them 😂

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

There’s a couple Marvel fics that I don’t think I’m ever going to finish, one being a Loki x OC fic that I’m planning on scrapping entirely to give the two of them an entirely new story.

What are your writing strengths?

I’d like to think that my writing superpower is being able to emulate the tone of each author I’m writing. I think I especially excel at Tolkien and Lewis’ stuff, and I have a lot of fun trying to structure my syntax in a way that sounds authentic to them.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I think I have a hard time with plot pacing. When I’m not doing a rewrite type of fic like TFPoaBE or APF, I often notice myself speeding from one event to the next without a catalyst or natural flow of events. Also, I notice myself getting too dialogy heavy sometimes, detracting from the descriptive portion of the work.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

It honestly depends on the work for me. Most often, if it’s a language the reader character or OC is supposed to know and understand, then I will write it in English in italics, to notate that yes, it is a different language, but the flow is still the same because the main character understands what is being said. When the OC or RC doesn’t know the language, then I do my best with google and I put the language in the work to disrupt the flow in the same way an MC who doesn’t speak the language would have their own flow of understanding interrupted.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?

I have a lot, so it’s hard to choose. I’m super super proud of TFPoaBE, though, for sure. Finishing that series felt like removing a part of my soul lol.

How do you organize your thoughts and ideas when writing/prepping?

I have literally been thinking about how to answer this since it came in.

The simplest way to answer it is: Logic

When I get the idea for a story, that little seed which could be anything - one scene, or a main overarching theme, or even a character - I think: how far can I spin it? 

So I take it in different directions and if nothing sticks or it’s forgettable then I move on and discard the idea. But when something sticks and I can’t get it out of my head, the next question is: what’s the final scene? 

With the Fuckening, I had the idea of Draco in Azkaban undergoing the inheritance. I knew that it would be Dramione and a love story and that’s it. Then I came across a thing (the seed) which very quickly sprawled into the overarching plot (I span it to the max). I couldn’t get it out of my head so I knew it had teeth. 

Then the important question of the final scene. I have had the final scene to part I in my head for months and it will be sometime before I actually write it. This is where the logic comes in. How do I get there?

With every scene, every plot point, every behaviour and decision has to follow on from one another. When it comes to writing, my biggest frustration is that I have to tell the story. I want to just download it all into your brains and be like - wasn’t that fun?

Describing the logic to get from A to B takes time, patience and words. You don’t have to be mega detailed, but the logic has to follow. The character can’t be travelling left constantly and then suddenly turn right with only one sentence to explain why. Storytelling is about weaving. So you have to drop hints here and there to leave breadcrumbs for the plot lines and decisions so that by the time the character does something or a plot point is exposed the reader is like - “yes that makes complete sense” not “where the fuck did that come from?”. 

Next is world-building and character development. In terms of world-building, that’s the technical side that I’ve spoken about before: hard and soft; whose POV is the narrative?; is it first or third person?

Char dev is again, making it believable. You can have an extra, dramatic and insane character, whose behaviours are alien and weird, but that then has to fit with their personality, their alignment, their motivation and most importantly, their voice. Everything has to be logical and congruent. If you hit a snag that you can’t explain, then stop and unpick it. You’re the author, either put something in to explain it, or take it away. 

At this point, you have created a fully rounded character for your reader to use as a vessel to traverse the world you have built. You know the destination and the shape of the route. 

I never, ever iron out the details on the plot though.

There are one or two key scenes that have to happen (Chapter 8/Chapter 11/ end of Chapter 16). Everything else is changeable - and has changed! As you go more and more into your world, you’ll realise that the original plot doesn’t fit the way that the char’s have developed. So I’m never strict about the parameters of the plot; if things need to change they do, which is why it’s important that I know the destination so that the logic can still follow.

Because when that formula is in place, then every detail is congruent with the next - even if you don’t realise it at the time. The amount of stuff I’ve written and only to realise in hindsight, that I had created a plotline which fitted in nicely with the theme. The story writes itself at that point as long as it is all grounded in the same foundation with the same destination in mind.

Which then leaves the final detail of the readers. You need to decide how you want your readers to perceive your story. Do you want them to find out about the plot as you go along? Or do you want your readers to second guess the narrative? Is it an unreliable narrator? I decided that I wanted my readers to know more than my characters. There are merits to every option but each one can create a different relationship to the plot. You then need to immerse your reader in the world. Use the senses. What do they feel on their skin? What do they hear? Smell is a big memory activator. Then look at sentence structure and the flow of the narrative. If they read choppy sentences, they’ll read faster, then creating urgency and suspense etc. Longer sentence slow down the flow and allow for you to paint the scene.

Overall, your aim as the author is to get what is in your head on to the page. The reader isn’t psychic and so they’re not going to know what you’re getting at or seeing unless you build it for them. Don’t be afraid to take your time and craft. But number 1, start at the end; number 2, use logic for everything. If you can’t explain how something happened, put something in to make it work or get rid.
