happy new year's, dying to know your top LA restaurants of the year

Happy new year and thank you SO much for this question Maddie. I’ve been training for this one the whole year

-northern Thai food club (also shows up as amphai northern Thai food on Google sometimes). This place has like 4 tables total, very cheap and serves the best Thai street food I’ve had outside of Thailand.

-saffy’s (fun but lowkey) and bavel (slightly more trendy and definitely more expensive) are sister restaurants by the same husband and wife pair serving some creative but authentic twists on middle eastern food. I had some of the best kebab of my life at saffy's and as a middle eastern person i don't say that lightly

-sonoratown: everyone in LA knows this casual mexican spot but it truly lives up to the hype. do not do takeout, these tacos/carmelos/burritos must be enjoyed hot at the source

-gjusta: classic deli food but make it a california brunch spot.

-girl & goat: just a classic california brunch spot

-my two fave special occasion/splurge spots ive been to are republique (classic french) and osteria mozza (classic italian)

HISTORY

phai has never been the type of woman to do what's expected of her, a trait that brought mostly chagrin and disappointment to her parents.

born on the upper east side to new money social climbers in the pharmaceuticals industry her parents desperately wanted to find their ranks among the old money elite of new york who had no desire to accept them.

phai, their eldest child was no help either. whether it was spilling wine all over a white tablecloth or speaking her opinion far to freely to someone who didn't value it she was a constant slew of mistakes in her family's mission to climb the ranks of society.

her only redeeming quality in her family's opinion was her mind. she was especially clever and her grades consistently were the best in her pampered private school crowd

she buzzed along behind those pampered kids like a favored pet. never entirely ostracized but never truly respected either. a funny thing to keep around, a running joke that they let tag along just for the hilarity of it.

in her later years after finding some better friends she developed a penchant for lavish partying. desperate to feel accepted and normal for even a moment.

phai enjoyed spoiling her friends, taking expensive vacations, desperate to endear them to her before they could grow tired of her and leave

her foray in cybersecurity came from a terminally online kid growing up in the beginning of the computer age

computer science just seemed like the easiest subject to major in and she happened to be especially good at it

eventually she made her own money doing cybersecurity for shady paramilitary companies and trying not the thing about the moral implications of her work

after the apocalypse she was rocketed right back to uselessness when terrorist cyberattacks became the very bottom rung of concern for americans

vacationing with her friends in vegas and stranded from her family phai had no way to get back to them despite her attempts. she supposed they didn't really care if she made it back one way or the other. after all she'd never been the kid they were proud of.

now endlessly dedicated to her friends, her chosen family she's felt immeasurable loss since the apocalypse started. finding novac has offered her some measure of peace but still left her feeling hollow in the wake of the end of the world.

PERSONALITY

a cringe, girlfailure, and at least three other fake twitter buzzwords related-phai is equal parts cynical and joyful. taking a bright approach to the little things in life but jaded by the troubles she's had. though she yearns for genuine connection but has an awful tendency to say the the wrong thing, at the wrong time, all the time. she can't seem to keep a lid on her honesty even when it's better to lie. she's always been contrarian to people's expectations of her but equally concerned about them. she's never been able to shut her brain off for even a second, a constant stream of thoughts and energy. her own feelings seem to betray her thoughts often. all she's every truly wanted in life is to feel valuable, to the world, to someone, to anything.

quick disclaimer. phai is a rework of an old muse for a myths rp whose supposed to be aphrodite so if you’re getting some of those vibes that’s why i just love her sm so she’s back

the first time someone called her pretty amphai was only a few hours old. family had been filing in and out of the hospital room all morning on a sunny valentine’s day, still warm even in february 

her great aunt had soothed her weathered hands over amphai’s tiny infant faced and cooed “how pretty just like her mom!” amphai’s mother, who had already mostly checked out of the situation was at least happy to hear the compliment 

the phrase continued over most of her life, that phai was pretty, she looked just like her mom, that was the closest they ever related. her mother never wanted to be a mom, had the baby with promises that phai’s father would take care of her, but he left shortly after the baby was born 

by the time phai was three her mother had enough of the memories chiang mai held and moved out to us with her aunt and uncle in georgia. 

it was there that phai grew up, and it was there that she learned that by wearing the right perfume, or tilting your head a certain way people would give you anything you wanted 

she grew up without a lot of money in a house with five other kids so she was left mostly unsupervised for most of her life, it was in that time she took a liking to pretty things, pretty people, anything beautiful to make her feel better in her life 

she breezed through boyfriends and girlfriends like you would tossing out an old pair of socks, but nobody really held it against her (well almost nobody) you knew what you were getting into with phai 

she was electric and enigmatic, but she was flighty and didn’t like commitment.

for years her only change from this routine of partying and dating were yearly summer visits to her family in chiang mai 

until her 18th birthday when her mother informed her that she wouldn’t be returning to the us with her 

though hurt phai was unsurprised, her mother had checked out of being a mother a long time ago, this was just more official 

she didn’t want her life in georgia any longer she’d exhausted all her options there, so she began couch surfing and hitchiking her way across the country 

working odd jobs along the way, mostly dancing at clubs, she had been on her high school’s dance teams and she knew that beauty and charisma could get you what you needed so it seemed like the natural progression 

she didn’t mean to stay in lancaster. originally arizona was meant to be a stop on the way to california, where she’d go to los angeles and become some famous person or another’s backup dancer 

but at 20 as she began working at the club as a dancer they treated her well and the dancers became like her family, it was entirely on accident that she settled into life in lancaster. by the time she’d made enough money to head out to la she found she didn’t really want to leave 

after a few years she wanted more, she didn’t mind the crimes the wild coyotes were involved after all she’d been around people like that her whole life. she started taking on more admin work for the club. doing paperwork in the morning and dancing at night 

sure she didn’t have anything greater than a high school education but she knew people, and she had google 

by the time she was twenty-seven the old manager was retiring and phai, who not only helped run the sapphire but loved it was the natural choice for manager 

it felt more adult like she was finally leaving her childhood behind, though phai’s personality hasn’t really changed much since she was twenty 

she’s still enigmatic, charismatic, feverishly dramatic and delightfully vain.

she gives affection like water never lacking in a number of partners or in friends, though usually those things coincide 

she’s just like candy vanilla bourbon, she is a warm hug in a tj-maxx bandage dress and high heels from ebay.

Amphai Northern Thai Cuisine, 5301 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles (East Hollywood/Thai Town), CA 90027

If you’re looking for BOLD, explosive Thai flavors and aren’t afraid of the FUNK, head on over to Amphai, a new Northern Thai hole in the wall in Thai Town.

I haven’t been to Thailand, but I felt like I was transported there by the spices in the air and the hawker/food stall ambiance. It’s pretty small. I think it seats 15 people. They have a steam table by the register with some cooked items, like sausage, curries, etc. There’s also a kitchen in the back. I think there are pictures of all their dishes taped to the window. There are 33 items on the menu and nothing is over $7! It’s easy to order by the menu item number.

Kha Nom Jean Nam Ngiaw ($7)/ Vermicelli rice noodle with curry sauce of tomato, fermented yellow beans, dried kapok flowers, ground pork, pork ribs, pork blood cubes, chicken feet served with fresh bean sprouts, a wedge of lime and pickles. It’s a noodle soup with a deep, dark, funky broth and a TON of pork blood cubes. There might even be blood in the actual broth. The broth was rich and complex, sour, spicy, and tangy. It was crazy flavorful. I wasn’t crazy about the thin, soft rice noodles (no chew) but they did soak up the flavor of the broth. There was a ton of funky things going on and so much blood. The meat on the tiny pork ribs was fall of the bone tender. Same with the chicken feet. Intense.

Northern spices pork sausage ($7): Ground pork marinated with herbs and spices – the sausage was sliced, the pork coarsely ground. Wow, the flavor was intense again – so much lemongrass, lots of chilis, definitely fish sauce. I could taste the pork but the flavor of the spices was stronger than the pork flavor.

Kang Ho ($7): vegetables, vermicelli, chili, pickled bamboo shoots, mushroom, pork with Thai-Burmese curry powder. Interesting dish – watch out for small bones. It had a lot more meat and a lot less curry than I expected. It was like braised pork with a mush of soft rice noodles and vegetables. Yes, it was spicy too.

Steamed sticky rice ($2): Dense and chewy, very filling

You’ll find sauces, napkins, and eating utensils at each table. The sauce with the Thai chilies was super salty. They also had the news on. Parking is going to be a challenge though they do share a small parking lot. Service was sweet and friendly.

it’s the kind of place that feels straight out of a fifties gangster movie, smoke wafts across the room from a man’s imported cuban cigar and glasses clink musically over the smooth sounds of the singer in the lounge. swathed in red silk amphai sits alone nursing a neat glass of whiskey and watching the singer with rapt attention. she’s an old friend and lover whose voice still enchants her to this day, though they long ago stopped having time for one another she still likes to make her way out to see the woman’s shows if only to hear her sonorous voice for a little bit. “what do you think?” she says leaning towards the small, round table adjacent to her. “she’s amazing right? i saw her sing bing crosby at the sky lounge once and it was life-changing.”

Qual o teu sonho?

A manhã foi passada a visitar templos budistas e a Phousi Mountain. Num dos templos budistas e em conversa com um monge voluntariei-me para lhe ensinar inglês e às 14h lá estava eu no templo, preparada.

Fui de bicicleta. Entrei no templo e estacionei-a debaixo de uma árvore onde nos sentamos nuns bancos para conversar.

Levava algumas coisas preparadas, folhas, uma caneta. O monge (o Bounpheng) tem 28 anos e é monge há 16. Há um ano que anda a aprender chinês :)

A nós, juntou-se um noviço (o Amphai) de 16 anos, que de uma forma curiosa se foi aproximando e assim se deixou ficar.É noviço, está há um ano no templo. Vem de uma província a sul de luang prabang e é filho único. Decidiu vir para monge (contra a vontade dos pais) porque quer aprender inglês.

Nas duas horas que estive com eles, tive ainda oportunidade de assistir a uma cerimónia, dada pelo monge a quem estava a ensinar inglês. E disseram que às 18h iam rezar e que, se eu quisesse, poderia ir assistir. Rezar e meditar. Fui.

Depois da cerimónia fiquei à conversa com o Amphai. Perguntei porque quer ele tanto aprender inglês, para ter deixado a família e ter vindo para monge. Disse que os pais são muito pobres e que não lhe conseguiriam nunca pagar a universidade. Perguntei "qual é o teu sonho?", "ser médico", respondeu ele.

Tanta vontade, determinação, espírito de sacrifício, humildade, num jovem que tem um sonho. Está a fazer o seu caminho. Para já com um manto laranja, depois quem sabe, com uma bata branca.
