Is such an insane quote to me. All I can think of is how GRRM had no reason to put that in if not for literary thematic reasons. The phrase also works so incredibly well for GRRM’s self proclaimed style of subconscious foreshadowing, and using a literary sleight of hand when it comes to planting seeds. (I.e whilst he’s placing in hints and clues he’s waving his other hand with some flashy wording).

So the thing with a lot of Jonsa clues is that it lives between the lines . It lives in this implicit subconscious place that you’d only pick up on if *critically* reading. It’s what you pick up on through re-reads , and you have to be unbiased, open to anything and willing to look - and then it’s quite literally screaming off the page and you cannot unsee it.

The issue with the majority of the fandom, is that they refuse to see it. They claim “no narrative basis!!” You guys are reaching … but are willing to accept targaryen imagery in Sansa’s chapters as long as it relates to fAegon. Or the blue rose in the wall of ice meaning that J/D are the fated soul lovers of the saga etc etc.

The primary quote that is used by J/D shippers is Jon’s death and the link to the wolf howl with Dany.

I’m not one of those asoiaf fans who kicks and screams , denying any semblance of foreshadowing for other ships. You do you. (I have a problem with the people who choose to be condescending and towards my ship, which happens to Jonsa’s a lot since it’s quite niche compared to J/D). I can acknowledge all the foreshadowing for J/D, I saw it from ACOK - but the difference is that I don’t view it as overtly positive and as an endgame fated romance.

What is interesting to me is that the GA will overemphasise this quote as absolute proof that J/D are endgame, (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read it on Tiktok, reddit, Twitter etc) though they are quick to dismiss literally anything else….even a very very similar quote with uniquely distinct phrasing because it can’t be !! It’s a delusional ‘reach.’

The Dany quote in question:

“Off in the distance, a wolf howled. The sound made her feel sad and lonely but no less hungry.” (ADWD Daenerys X) .

Later in that chapter she embraces ‘fire and blood.’ So to me, the hunger represents both a physical absence and insatiable desires which she will soon embrace and no longer reject - she’ll likely sail to Westeros in TWOW. I actually love this interpretation of the quote, though it seems rather in the minority for the GA. Is it foreshadowing ? I believe non-J/D shippers can absolutely agree on that. But it doesn’t seem an overly positive quote that suggests everlasting romance. I mean, the fact that she hears it in the distance, so it isn’t a loud sound, and though it despairs her, she’s more concerned with that ‘hunger.’ It’s interesting word-play from GRRM as there are obvious double meanings to the quote.

And you know what ? I’m intrigued to see where he goes with that - I’m far more enamoured by potential conflict - though conflict is never without its complexity of course . See I do find J/D compelling, and I see the appeal that the GA finds, - I used to like the it in the past because of fanart and edits. I then just realised that J/S are far subtler, but make more sense and tie together beautifully in terms of thematics, parallels, and characterisations . In terms of J/D I’ve realised I’m more interested in a uniquely conflicting dynamic rather than the conventional hero boy x hero girl saves the world . I’m all on board for GRRM subverting that tired tired fantasy trope and giving us something else - unexpected - raw, beautiful, (angsty) and unequivocally there since the beginning. Here’s a hint; starts with J and has 5 letters.

Okay I went on way too much of a ramble here !!! Back to Sansa’s quote.

GA pass over Sansa’s line which is simultaneously subtle and visceral. And it’s easy to do so, because it’s in AFFC - but then that’s a perfect way for GRRM to weave something in. Sansa is physically surrounded by mountains in her chapter, just as the fierce howling is an overwhelming presence. Jon dies and calls for Ghost in his last chapter - it could be around the same time - Ghost reacting to Jon’s death, grieving over him. it’s also a ‘ghost’ because something (someone) important to Sansa has perished. Someone she hadn’t thought of in a long time and was only just reminded of.

“A ghost wolf big as mountains” “howling fiercely.” Ghost wolf. Did George need to specify that it was a GHOST wolf in the exact same chapter where Sansa is consciously thinking of how sweet it’d be to see Jon again? After not thinking of him in 2 books?? And then once more lamenting “that could never be.”

Now I’m primarily analysing this quote through a Jonsa lens, but both ^ the Dany and Sansa quote also allude to Jon’s sheer importance to the narrative - his loss is profound, and his resurrection will be even more so.

OLIVER X RANDY X GINGI THINGY!!

Randy woke up, sweaty and sandwiched between two warm bodies. He felt a pair of arms wrapped firmly around his scrawny waist and another strewn somewhere near his upper torso. His tail was twined with the tail of whoever was behind him, carefully fitted bells hanging from the end of their beige cord. The green skin.. wait. Green skin? Fuck, he remembered where he was now. He was cuddling with Oliver and Gingi, in Oliver’s apartment, on Oliver’s bed. His screen grew hotter and, against his own control, his tail thumped onto the mattress. This set off the bells wrapped around Oliver’s tail, obviously, waking both the fezzed man and the cryptid. Compared to Oliver’s slow stretching as he awakened, Gingi practically dragged Randy with them as it sat up as quickly as.. cryptidly possible in the bed.

“WHERE AM I!? DID I OVERDOSE ON COUGH SYRUP AGAIN?? RANDAL AND OLIVE-MAN, WHY ARE YOU HERE??” Gingi screamed all of this in rapid succession, frantically looking around the room and between Randy and Oliver. It had backed away from Randy’s grasp at some point and he didn’t feel like acknowledging how upset that made him. He did not feel like unpacking that right now.

“Rotary-christ, Gingi, shut up. I invited you and Randy to hang out yesterday and we ended the night by cuddling with each other because you refused to do anything else.” Oliver chuckled through his sentence, resting a hand on Randy’s knee to calm the startled nokia.

“Oh. In that case, Mama’s goin’ back to sleep.” With that, Gingi curled back into the bed and wrapped their tail around itself.

“We should probs go back t’ sleep too. It’s, like, 2:30 in the morning. Unless ya ain’t tired?” Oliver tilted his head, questioning Randy. The nokia replied with a small shake of his head.

“N- No, I’m still tired just.. I’ve got to use the bathroom, y-y’know?” He knew damn well the fezzed man wasn’t buying it, accentuated by the hand on his knee moving up to his thigh and giving it a reassuring pat.

“If it’s ‘bout us cuddlin’ ya don’t need t’ be nervous. It’s just me n’ Ging. Wait.. here I’ll even let ya choose the position ya end up in this time.” Oliver held his arms out, seemingly waiting for something. Randy felt his screen grow brighter and hotter yet again, but he still found himself latching onto Oliver’s waist and holding him close.

“Awww, didn’t know ya were such a lil’ love bug, Rands.” Oliver saying this while he pat the nokia’s head didn’t help his entire “overheating” situation. Randy simply wagged his tail in response as Oliver carefully caressed his head, rubbing the back of it and purposely avoiding the delicate buttons resting on the front. The moment the fezzed man started humming was when Randy knew he was done for. The quiet tune quickly lulling him back to sleep, the purring from Gingi to the side of him definitely helped. Oh, and how warm he felt for once. All he knew was he would trade all of his organs if it meant he was able to stay here just a bit longer. Surrounded by his “friends” and literally wrapped in the arms of one of them.

TADC PART 2 SPOILERS INDER THE CUT (spoilers for characterisation and the plot outline + major events) (long post ahead)

The way Jax being portrayed as a legitimate asshole who doesn't care about the NPCs in quests just makes him so much more INTERESTING to me

Like everyone's reactions to the adventures sums up the different reactions to distractions in stressful times. It's like...

Okay, so the Circus is presented as some sort of world, without meaningful consequences, right? Throw a bunch of people into a world without consequences (like,,, videogames irl) and you're going to get a bunch of different reactions to it!

Ragatha presents as an individual who wants to use the adventures that Cain presents as a positive distraction from the existential horror of the Circus itself. She is even acknowledged to have a history of issues surrounding the nature of The Circus from when she first arrived (evidenced by dialogue in the show, too lazy to pick specific examples, but she acknowledges it herself, source: trust).

But at the end of the day, she is a member of the system. She treats the adventures as what Cain presents them as, just adventures. She refers to the people that exist in the world as NPCs. NPCs that she treats kindly, and with respect, but one's that she is disconnected from, as shown when Pomni expressed distress at the loss of Gummigoo. Stating that Cain sometimes reuses NPCs, so it's "not too bad".

So in a world without consequence, she strives to do the adventures/quests in the "right" way. Heroically and all that jazz.

Jax on the other hand is someone who is also using the adventures as a positive distraction from the circus. While he presents in a nihilistic, unbothered way, it's clear from his responses that he greatly cares about what he can "get out of" The experiences the Circus provides.

After all, why would he be so disappointed that The Fudge was destroyed, if he truly didn't care about anything? He does care. He just wants something different out of the adventures. He wants destruction, a sense of control.

His behaviours reflect many disenfranchised peoples ones when in crisis situations. Presenting with a lackadaisical attitude, and getting joy out of things they can control. After all, most people wouldn't want to have the Fudge come and destroy things, so he gets to take agency and make the decision without anyone else getting pleasure from it.

Is it right? Probably not. But in a world where there are no consequences, it makes sense that he would watch a city get destroyed for the joy of it.

We also see moments of vulnerability in Jax outside of his frustration when things don't go his way. He expresses a moment of sadness at the mention of Kaufmo's funeral service, before he forces himself back into the mask of indifference and disgust.

Ergo, in the face of a non consequential system, Jax says "fuck it, burn it all down"

Zooble also represents typical responses to distraction methods in the face of adversity. With uncaringness. Their refusal to participate in Cain's adventures (unless explicitly forced to, like in episode 1) reflects a complete disconnect from the offered mechanisms that Cain provides.

After all, why participate when it doesn't mean anything to you? Zooble presents as the disinterested individual, who, similarly to Jax, does care about events within the Circus, but does not desire to use the coping mechanisms that it provides.

In the face of a world without consequence. They do not care for it.

Kinger presents an entirely different coping mechanism from his peers. Kinger, underneath the pressures of the Circus, has disconnected from the reality around him. While he has moments of clarity, and even shows interest in things people say, it seems to be filtered through layers of dissociation and uncomprehending.

When asked direct questions, it's a toss up whether he can 1) hear the question 2) comprehend it correctly and 3) be able to respond but only once.

He's shown to have a depth of knowledge, but it's out of his reach. And when faced with a world without consequence, he doesn't seem to fully grasp it. Instead, going only for the ride.

Gangle is an interesting case, where her fearful personality pushes her to agree with the sentiments of those around her. What she believes in seems to be kindness, but it's difficult to tell how exactly she feels about the adventures, and the Circus, as she often reacts to what others do, rather than pushing herself to the forefront.

Case in point, while driving, Gangle appears very nervous, and when Jax comments on using violence against the croco bandits, she doesn't directly go against it. Instead, she makes a small comment about violating a convention. Not "that's wrong" or "I dont think we should do that", but a reflection of law and order.

We haven't really seen her without the pressures of external influences (particularly Jax). So while we can make some assumptions about her intentions (she probably doesn't want to hurt people) it's difficult to see deeper reasoning beyond "not wanting to upset anyone".

So, when Gangle is presented with an adventure with no consequences, she reacts to it, rather than enforces her own will onto the environment.

And finally, Pomni.

In a world of no consequence, she finds them. She does not fullt accept the narrative Cain constructs, that the adventure is inconsequential (a distraction), that there is no exit.

She gets presented with a "fact" (I.e., there is no exit), and immediately (either through her own determination, or chance), finds deeper meaning and alternate paths.

There was an exit door. True, it didn't lead to the outside world, but it existed. Pomni proved that. She continued for ages, down paths of endless corridors, to prove that everyone was wrong, until she found the void.

The mission was to stop some bandits and get the syrup back? She instead fell through the floor of the map, and found friendship in what was meant to be an NPC with no consciousness.

Pomni is the person, that when presented with an impossible situation, finds ways around it.

Cain is the one who takes her progress and resets it. (Taking her out of the void, popping Gummigoo)

While we can't be certain of Cain's intent just yet (beyond being a representation of/being the system that the characters are stuck in), we can ascertain one thing.

Pomni, when faced with a world without consequence, finds that there is in fact, a cost to the world

Thinking about Frank vs Russia again. And about the confirmation that the SINNED system was created at the same time as the DENNIS one. We know Dennis perfected his system for women but we haven't seen him ever date a man or keep a man. We have no confirmation of what he's done, and based on Dennis' eagerness in knowing if Dee and Mac got 2nd dates, I like to think he's never even tested it before. It was all based on observations. He kept it secret all these years and finally saw potential now to test it out through them. When's the second date? He's eager to know. Does it work.

And it does. Ofc it does. It was foolproof. He knew that.

Dennis isn't against a romance with Mac. The system exists since s6, Dennis clearly WANTS to keep a man. He just doesn't understand how that's already happened. Mac likes him? Wdym, he hasn't done the steps yet. Dennis just confirmed that the system works.

We know Dennis' outburst basically meant "You can't be in love with Johnny because he doesn't love you Mac, I don't love you. Move on."

But it also meant "You can't be in love with Johnny because Johnny is me! And you're not in love with me!"

Dennis is rejecting love on all grounds, in both directions. This isn't part of the plan, part of the scheme. This isn't his goal, not now. He's not ready and Mac isn't either.

The goal was simply to get Mac's attention back. To bring them back on equal footing. To be friends again. Dennis is fixing the friendship first, and Mac is being impatient and an idiot and jumping at romance and ruining the careful pacing Dennis is creating.

my emotions are all over the place

#wind howls #i feel like i am in a state of a mild anxiety attack. #perhaps i am anxious. huh. #atsv left me feeling weird which isnt a bad thing and i know that Specifically will pass. it happened with totk as well #but the travel to the movie and back were not great #so now im not feeling great. my body hurts and i feel vaguely sick. #i think a big part of it is me just. ranting to my boyfriend abt those events and my sibling listening in on me and texting me abt it #i think. that really really bothered me. my own privacy is very important to me. and i hate when it feels like thats taken from me #next time ill just text from the get go i guess. but also im just upset still. #i dont know how my sibling expects me to take their side in an 'argument' when the other side is my 11 year old baby sister. #and its not even an argument. its my baby sister just being a child and my sibling taking offense to her being a kid. #and like. its not even a case of me liking one of my siblings more than another. this is a case of 'youre being needlesly cruel to a kid.' #and somehow they havent realized by now that a kids wellbeing will always be more important to me than literally anything else. #especially when the kid is my own baby sister. #i dont like getting into arguments with my sibling because theyre strong and confrontational but also theyre just 18. almost 19. #theyre an adult ! but they still have all their teenage immaturity and fragility. #which obviously they refuse to acknowledge. because of the aforementioned immaturity and fragility. #genuinely if i had to pick anyone in my family that should talk to a therapist first. it would easily be my sibling. #i hope they get better soon for their own sake because i love them but my patience is running thin.

ur post abt the roommate. wow the audacity of white ppl never fails to amaze me. they rlly only perceive the world through their lens and think if someone hasn’t established themselves in their community they’re a nobody. u had to find out abt kanye west due to a white woman prevalent in ur community? what does that say abt u more than anything? it’s so funny how they rlly think poc success relies on whether they’re relevant enough to white ppl. it makes me understand now why a lot of them will be obsessed with and hype up artists like tyler the creator, since 90% of his audience are white. i experienced this first hand at one of his concerts earlier this year.

It def changes the narrative a lot, but I'm also white and I was really shocked, too. I knew it was possible, but I never really thought someone would be so blatant (and intentional, too) in their cultural deafness and blindness about a topic that's not only easy to understand but also... important?

Like... idek know what to say. The fact that there are (white) people out there who have never had to challenge their worldview, even with different styles of art and music... to the point where distinct history, at the very least, isn't even remotely important? Or considered at all?

Not only does it touch upon what you say about it reflecting poorly on them (which, BIG FACTS) but also... you wonder how that's something to even defend or take pride in. It's pure stupidity... and overall just hard to watch, someone having the nerve to so wrongly but confidently have opinions about a topic they never even bothered to learn about.

And exactly as you say about TTC, too. We were just talking in one of my education classes, about how culture can be alienated at the exact same time society starts to accept it. Like, who is truly benefitting from making something mainstream? Not that this is inherently/automatically bad, per se, but when art, music, food, etc, becomes popular at the expense of the people who made it and who it was made FOR... what's really going on? Definitely nothing mutually beneficial, that's for sure... and ESPECIALLY not if this version is the only thing shared, valued, and understood of the culture.

Like Kanye West at the VMAs vs. the impact of his entire discography, for example.

I think about how when i used he/they pronouns, everyone around me would only ever use they/them on me and only brought up me using he/him so they could "treat" me like a man and exclude me. Despite me not being one.

What about spencer with a reader who is normally so independent and does everything for herself but she’s so soft for spencer and lets him dote on her and take care of her and the team is like :o bc they can’t believe she is letting someone do things for her

"I am better," You insist, your voice a far cry from its usual drawl. It's more ragged and weak, and you definitely have a stuffy nose, which indicates how untruthful your words are. Everyone knows it, most of the bullpen can hear your insistent griping, and they're beginning to feel bad for Spencer. They can't imagine how he'd gotten you to stay home today, but they're shooting each other knowing grins each time you push back against his gentle insistence.

"No, angel, you're not." Spencer croons, "You're on the mend, but you're not recovered yet. And you'll get worse if you don't take your meds. I put them on the nightstand for you, and some water. All you have to do is take them, and go back to sleep."

"I don't want to sleep!" You insist, and it's a whine- a whine! Emily's mouth splits in an incredulous grin, and a laugh threatens to tremble Derek's broad shoulders at how juvenile your attempts at protest have become. They're used to your biting words, your forceful demeanor, your inability to surrender any control, but Spencer's got you tucked into the covers begging for a kiss on the forehead.

"I've been sleeping all day, and I slept all day yesterday, and the day before that. I'm tired of sleeping. Just let me fill out some paperwork! Anything, Spence, please."

He chews on the inside of his cheek, ignoring the way that JJ giggles suspiciously with Penelope, who's leaning against the side of her desk, drawn out of her office for the spectacle.

"You can read," He relents, "And you can watch tv but only if you do it on your computer with the night light setting turned on," He narrows his eyes, taking on your rather rough persona to ensure that his orders are obeyed, "Promise?"

"Promise," You rasp, and the team can hear the smile in your voice, "Thanks, Spencer."

"Use the night light setting," He warns instead of accepting your thanks, "I'll check later to see if it's turned on!"

"Okay!" You laugh, and Spencer winces lightly as the sound morphs into a thick cough, "Okay, I'll- ah, I'll see you later, baby."

"See you later," He concedes with a fond smile, waving in addition to his verbal goodbyes, "Love you."

"Love you too," You promise, then end the call. Spencer feels the weight of everyone else's stares on him as he sets his seldom-used phone down and resumes working, refusing to acknowledge them unless they prod at him first.

"Good job, Spence," JJ congratulates, "I didn't think she'd ever take a sick day."

"I know," Emily gushes with bright eyes and a wild smile, "If I tried to tuck her in she'd probably bite me."

"Well, that's 'cause you don't have Pretty Boy's charm," Derek cracks, though the smile that he flashes Prentiss is reassurance that he's teasing Spencer more than he's teasing her, "Congrats on wearing the pants today, Reid. Enjoy it while it lasts, 'cause as soon as she's out of bed, she's taking the wheel again."

Spencer takes great pleasure in levelling Derek with a meaningful, "Shut up," because he's more than happy to be your passenger princess any day.
