Bethesda E3 Press Conference Summary

Bethesda kicked off their Live E3 2018 press conference in Los Angeles with an electrifying musical performance from Andrew WK to get the crowd pumped for Rage 2, followed by a detailed action trailer for the “most insane open world shooter” from id Software – the creators of the First Person Shooter genre with Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake – and Avalanche Studios – whose explosive open-world mayhem experience speaks for itself with Just Cause and Mad Max.

In Rage 2, the player takes on the role of Walker, the last ranger, as he fights the armies of The Authority across the wasteland where an asteroid collision on Earth has wiped out most of the population and ended civilisation as we know it. The explosive trailer features explosive car chases, deadly boomerangs, and anti-gravity grenades that cause the victims to be thrown into the air or held onto the ceiling where they are easily picked off with a shotgun blast. Rage 2 looks like a lot of fun and a huge step up from the previous instalment. Rage 2 has a release window of Spring 2019.

Following on from that explosive opener, Bethesda announced that popular free-to-play card game, The Elder Scrolls: Legends is coming to PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch later this year. All your current progress will transfer over to these new platform editions.

With the Summerset expansion just released to hugely positive reviews, Bethesda are keeping the moment going by announcing the next story DLC for The Elder Scrolls: Online that will be released later this year. The new content will expand on the lore of the Argonian race, as it focuses primarily on the region of Murkmire in Black Marsh.

Following on the from the hugely successful reboot of one of the most recognised franchises in video gaming history, Doom is getting a sequel entitled Doom: Eternal. The short teaser announcement trailer shows Hell on Earth, with the demon horde ravaging the crumbling ruins of a cityscape. Doom: Eternal is said to feature increased power for our favourite UAC Demon-slayer, along with many new Demon types. We can expect more detail to be revealed in August during QuakeCon.

Prey has been a huge success for Bethesda and Arkane Studios, and a way of saying thank you to the fans, the development have just released a free update that features three new game modes; Story Mode, New Game+ and Survival Mode. Mooncrash is another game mode that is coming that sounds like a lot of fun and really enhances the replayability factor of this highly acclaimed game. Mooncrash puts the player into a simulation where no two experiences are ever the same. To get an idea of a small sample of what to expect, check out the trailer below. Prey is also getting a 1v5 Player-vs-Player mode called Typhon Hunter, where 1 human character is set against 5 mimic Typhons, complete will all their disguise abilities. This new game mode sounds like a blast and it will also be available as a VR experience soon.

Along with the previously announced Nintendo Switch release of Wolfenstein: The New Colossus which is due on 29th June, the franchise is also getting a spin-off game called Wolfenstein: Youngblood. This new instalment features the twin daughters of BJ Blazkowicz and is set in 1980s Nazi-occupied Paris. The game is due in 2019 and can be played solo or as a completely co-operative experience.

With the games that Bethesda are publishing out of the way, it was time to see that their in-house game development team – Bethesda Game Studios - have been working on. Fallout 76 was briefly announced a couple of weeks ago, and then the first trailer was shown during the Microsoft Press Conference earlier today, but the detail was always going to be saved for this moment.

Fallout 76 is a prequel to all other Fallout games and features a map 4 times bigger than the one seen in Fallout 4. After spending 25 years in Vault 76, you emerge on Reclamation Day into the distinct and eerily lush mountainous Wastelands of West Virgina, which we’re told features 16 times more environmental detail than previous games, including distant weather patterns across the 6 distinct regions of the map. Fallout 76 is also completely online, and each character to emerge from Vault 76 with you is another player. You can play completely solo as in the previous instalments, focusing on your own progression and tactics, but the safest way to survive the many dangers of the Wasteland is to squad up with these other players at any time.

The game will feature a mobile construction kit, allowing you to build settlements on the fly all across the map. Fallout 76 will also feature dynamic game mechanics in the form of Nuclear launch sites. All you have to do is reclaim control of the silos from the hostile occupants, obtain the launch codes and choose where you want to launch. The impact site will completely change the landscape, and you can brave the many dangers to claim huge rewards from the devastation. Fallout 76 will launch on 14th November 2018.

To close off the press conference, Bethesda Game Studios teased 2 new projects in development. Firstly, a completely new franchise called Starfield, which seems to be set in space is in the works. Hopefully we’ll get more details soon, but the idea of a huge Elder Scrolls style Sci-Fi RPG will get many fans excited! Speaking of which… The Elder Scrolls VI is officially in development! Not much was revealed about this one either – just some little appetisers to keep the fans wanting more! Well done Bethesda, we salute you.

Overall: A fun little conference that was completely free from bloated PR talks and only focused on games (except for the brief segment from Acer). Both of the hosts were great and took any slip ups in stride. Only complaint really is how long it was. And since it's the PC Gaming show, there aren't any massive title reveals, but that's to be expected.

Favorite Moments

Good to hear more about The Sinking City. I really want a new Lovecraftian game.

Man Eater; You play as a shark who eats people and its an open world RPG. It's crazy enough that it might work.

Genesis Alpha One sounds really awesome. Definitely on my radar.

Two Point Hospital looks like a fun twist on the building/management genre. Plus, the host perfectly handled the mic not working situation.

Rapture Rejects; I'm a sucker for Cyanide and Happiness. The really funny trailer grabbed me.

E3 2019 Press Conference Expectations Predictions and more.

So E3 it's that time of year again where we see all of the new games announced that are coming out very soon games that we've been waiting to play. And new game announcements that we never heard of that hopefully surprised us.

The biggest change to this year's E3 is that one of the biggest competitors in the industry Sony is not going to make an appearance this year don't be too down though because I think they have something big in the works that they're prepared to announce at next year's E3 also they have their monthly update videos that they live stream called state of play so we're sure to get one of those in the month of June.

Bethesda's up next as they are going to livestream their conference Sunday 6/9/2019 at 8:30 p.m. eastern time and it is unclear what they plan on showing as they have already stated they will not be showing Starfield or the sequel to Skyrim Elder Scrolls 6 . Very interesting to see what they are going to talk about during their press conference I hope it's a little bit about blades I was interested in it a little bit last year and they have since come out with the mobile version which is okay but I would prefer the PS4 version or VR experience but we will see.

Next on Monday we have Square Enix and they're going to be showcasing the Marvel Avengers game that they teased back at the beginning of 2017 it's literally been forever and they haven't said anything about this game except for the initial announcement trailer and this week we finally get to see the game and at least know what kind of game it is we don't even know that yet. But Square Enix is a pretty good game developer and I trust them so I think they'll do a good job with this game can't wait to see what it looks like!

The Square Enix conference will be held Monday June 10th at 9 p.m. eastern time.

Microsoft conference will be Sunday June 9th at 4 p.m. eastern time.

Of course Microsoft is going to be there and I suspect we will get pretty much the same stuff we got last year just them bragging about getting more developers on their side I'm pretty sure we will hear a lot about live stream gaming that seems to be where everybody's headed streaming your game and still actually buying a physical copy or downloading the game. They could also announced a few games that are available on both consoles Xbox and Playstation they've done that in the past.

And you have Ubisoft who knows what they're going to show probably some Just Dance game 2020 or something there could be another Assassin's Creed this year releasing. And I wouldn't be surprised if they did another partnership with Nintendo used one of their IPs to create a whole new game. We'll just have to wait and see on that there press conferences is Monday June 10th at 4 p.m. eastern time.

And last but not least Nintendo will show their Nintendo Direct live stream Tuesday June 11th at 12 p.m. eastern time I don't really see a Nintendo showing off anyting or much of anything that we don't already know about they should be showing a lot of Animal Crossing for the switch maybe some Mario Maker 2 stuff a couple more of the Smash Bros characters should be announced maybe some surprise games I suspect they will talk about Pokemon sword and shield but they're already going to do that on 6 5 2019 at 9 a.m. in a separate Pokemon go direct before E3 even starts. My guess is Nintendo will talk about their mobile Mario Kart game and probably some surprise stuff.

Closing statements E3 2019 looks like it will be pretty good this year we are missing Sony but I think if we get some good surprises I'll be happy. I'm already super excited to see what Square Enix can do with that Avengers game they've been working on for two years at least. And hopefully Nintendo does have those surprises up their sleeves although I don't know what more they can do.

For them this was a challenge, as their community were very excited to hear anything about the game that was a brand new IP.

The video also sheds more light on Cyberpunk 2077, stating that the development is “far from over”, which could mean there might be some time before its release. It features the importance of character customisation for players, which for a developer known for their detailed character designs such as The Witcher’s Geralt, is a new path for them to take allowing players more “freedom” with their protagonist. The importance of “first person” was also spotlighted, as it gives you a more “immersive” feel according to Level Designer Miles Tost.

We’re left with the tagline “it’s still coming, when it’s ready”, meaning there is no current timeline for the release date. Cyberpunk 2077 will release on platforms PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Publisher Modiphius Entertainment announces they will be releasing an officially licensed Fallout pen and paper RPG which is set to release sometime in 2020.

The pen and paper RPG for Fallout will use Modiphius Entertainment‘s 2d20 system which is the same system used for Mutant Chronicles 3rd Edition and Star Trek Adventures RPGs. So far there is no title for the Fallout tabletop RPG and it will be next year when it gets its launch.

Sam Webb head of roleplaying game development at Modiphius will be taking the lead of this project. A long-time fan and also worked on previous games such as Star Trek Adventures.

But this is not the only Fallout themed project planned, there is also an expansion for the tabletop miniatures game Fallout: Wasteland Warfare in the works.

The expansion for Fallout: Wasteland Warfare is expected to launch sometime this summer 2019, while the Fallout pen and paper RPG is set to release sometime next year.

Playstation 4 Remote Play App

Playstation have announced support for a range of devices with the launch of PS4 firmware 6.50, as well as launching a new app for iOS meaning you can now stream PS4 games on your iPhone or iPad.

This might be more suitable on an iPad for a more comfortable viewing size. Where you can play will be limited to your home Wi-Fi reach as it is not supported by mobile network. However, the app could come in handy when you to be in other parts of your home or when nature calls.

E3 2018 Press Conferences – Something for Everyone?

E3 began today, Tuesday, June 12th, with the official opening of the expo floor in Los Angeles. It feels, for those of watching from afar, like E3 ended this morning with the last of the publisher press conferences/presentations/ media briefings that began on Saturday and traditionally feature the biggest reveals and news about the coming years in games. Starting with EA on Saturday and through this morning's Nintendo Direct, here are my quick (editor's note: ha!) thoughts and takeaways from each presentation.

EA kicked things off on Saturday and did every other company a favor by setting such a low bar to clear to appear interesting. Their sports lineup was represented with announcements for FIFA, NBA Live, and Madden. Madden 19 will mark the franchise's return to the PC, which immediately had me worried about hacking. It's no secret these games' Ultimate Team modes make EA tons of money via microtransaction-driven card collecting/team building and I imagine within hours of release the more creative members of the PC scene will have accounts with tons of in-game currency and/or the best cards available in the mode. There was also a bit of a lackluster showing of Anthem, the new game from Bioware that's poised to be EA/Bioware's Destiny. I enjoyed having the developers speak, but I didn't come away feeling like I have any idea if Bioware is making a game that I would expect and want from Bioware vs simply aping the model of Destiny. We also got a tease of Respawn's Star Wars game, with studio head Vince Zampella revealing the name (Jedi Fallen Order) and that it would be set between Episodes 3 and 4. No gameplay or trailer was shown, just a name given and a release date of "Holiday 2019" that I would already bet is actually more like "Spring 2019." Finally, the Star Wars Battlefront II team from DICE addressed overhauls to progression and upcoming content updates, saying on stage they got things wrong at release. It was nice to hear, but I'd bet all the money in my pocket against all the money in yours that NO ONE at DICE made the business decisions that led to Battlefront II launching with the broken, exploitative progression system and loot box set-up they took so much heat for. EA's CEO, Andrew Wilson, was there to say all kinds of nice things about the upcoming line-up, it would have been better to see him eat just a bite of humble pie for the disastrous decisions behind Battlefront II.

Sunday was a much better day, with Microsoft and Bethesda having strong presentations outlining defined futures for their companies. Microsoft touted 50 games being shown and equally impressive numbers of "world premieres" and "exclusives" even if those phrases mean less and less and the market changes. Of the 50 games shown, the things I'm excited for are: Gears Tactics, an Xcom inspired strategy and tactics game in the Gears of War universe, Crackdown 3, which was delayed again until February 2019 but still looks like the open world toy box you want from Crackdown, And Forza Horizon 4, which brings changing seasons to the open world driving franchise. Some other announcements got my attention, like Chis Avellone writing Dying Light 2, a sequel whose predecessor didn't connect with me at all, very good trailers for Tunic, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Metro Exodus. Microsoft also announced they were beefing up their 1st party studio portfolio by acquiring 5 new studios, including Playground Games (Forza Horizon), Undead Labs (State of Decay franchise), and Ninja Theory who released the underrated Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice last year. Even if some of the big reveals didn't connect with me (Devil May Cry 5, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice), it was a strong showing for a company that's been on the defensive since the poor reveal and launch of the Xbox One. They ended with a trailer for CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077. That game has a look and a tone already that I'm into to the degree I'm almost prepared to say "Show me no more until I can download it and play it myself."

Bethesda spent the first half of their event covering the bases they needed to: service games like Elder Scrolls Online and Elder Scrolls Legends (both of which I enjoy!) got stage time to mention upcoming content or changes, but those types of games see updates and changes so frequently that their communities are better served by dedicated streams or community events. Todd Howard then spent 30 minutes or so doing what I wish Bioware had done for Anthem, explaining what the game would be and how it would differ from prior, mainline Fallout experiences. I'm eager to play with friends after seeing what they had to say. And then they teased Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, which I'm imagining won't be actual products until 2020 and 2022, respectively.

Square Enix kicked off Monday with a video presentation. They showed almost nothing new that interested me; I was already going to play Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Dragon Quest XI, and Octopath Traveler. It was still nice to see trailers for them. The Quiet Man was the only intriguing new thing to me, and even then I have no idea what the brief mixed live action/gameplay thing they showed was or what the game actually is. That's not a bad thing – sometimes a "teaser" does its job by "teasing" you with what may be.

Ubisoft had a typical Ubisoft presentation, opening with a dancing panda bear accompanied by a marching band. I could tell you it was to promote the latest entry in the Just Dance series, but would it matter? It was still a dancing panda bear and marching band and was wonderfully weird with or without context. Beyond Good and Evil 2 made an appearance with an impressive trailer and some pre-alpha footage. Less impressive was the announcement of a partnership with Hit Record to crowdsource assets for the game. Don't do spec work, and multibillion dollar companies should pay the people who make their products. Also worth mentioning, The Division 2 got its first extended trailer after an earlier appearance of gameplay at Microsoft. I enjoyed aspects of The Division, and it sounds like the dev team is aware of less than stellar aspects of that game that were a drag, i.e. bullet sponge enemies. I have incredibly mixed feelings on The Division 2; the trailer includes the phrase "America is on the verge of collapse," and, like, maybe read the room in a nation hurtling towards being a fascist police state? Also, when your game explicitly focuses on a world where government-sanctioned agents operate as an ad hoc paramilitary organization, it's disingenuous at best for the developers to say the game is "apolitical." On the other hand, the shooting feels good and the loot treadmill sure was rewarding in the original The Division. It's out on March 15th, 2019, so maybe the impacts of the repeal of the US's net neutrality protections will be clear by then and help me make up my mind about playing an on-line only game. Animations are fluid and natural, and the attacks, be they up close stabbings or gunshots, appear to have a weight behind them. It's technically impressive, but I worry about the balance between the story and character moments I enjoy from a Naught Dog game and these frankly brutal sequences of intense gore and violence and how they'll be balanced. While I have those doubts, the trailers ends by returning to Dina and Ellie, with Dina making a comment to Ellie that resonates in the context of the two contrasting scenes and Ellie's facial expression changing in an amazingly natural way, both in terms of the technical animation aspect and in the context of the small story we've seen play out. On the "fun violence!" side of the scale is the PS4 exclusive Spider-Man game that looks like a ton of fun with plenty of combat powers to explore and combine in protecting New York. Other big Sony exclusives Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding (from Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear fame) look technically impressive but just do nothing for me in terms of story or gameplay.

Nintendo closed the presentation part of the show the same way EA kicked it off: disappointingly, at least for me. They did confirm a new Fire Emblem title is coming to Switch in Spring of 2019, which is great news, along with a remake/rerelease of The World Ends With You. Mario Tennis Aces and Octopath Traveler are out this month, and Captain Toad; Treasure Tracker hits for Switch in July. The rest of the show was mostly focused on Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, the latest entry in the Smash Brothers series. I have zero interest in Smash Brothers, and a good 30 minutes of the presentation were dedicated to revealing the entire roster – all 64 characters – and going into the minutia of every kind of change you could make to a fighting game.
