Except when he steps off the plane into the blazing Texas sun and you break into a sprint to throw yourself in his arms before anyone can get in a word of greeting. He catches you as easily as breathing, presses his face against your shoulder and hugs you tight. And he smells like sand, like military issue soap, like stale cigarette smoke, like sun and gunpowder, and home. He breathes you in, and sighs, unspooling in your arms with a quiet, "'M home bonnie" that just makes your bury your face against his neck so no one can see how emotional you are over three little words.
