the fellowship at a hardware store, from someone who works at a hardware store:
sam: is in the nursery!! goes straight to the discount/dying plants and piles his cart full of wilted and sad plants. likes to rescue the houseplants first, has a soft spot for perennials and citrus trees. is a nightmare to check out but is very sweet about it. dirt and leaves everywhere. like, everywhere. they have to sweep after he’s gone. surprisingly strong and hauls big bags of dirt.
frodo: enjoys home improvement!! likes to wander carpeting and organization, hunts for good deals and keeps tabs on the sales weekends. he likes to peruse the shower curtains and closet accessories. likes to refurbish old furniture he finds off the side of the road- currently fixing up an antique dresser to put in the master bedroom.
merry: doorknobs, handles, dresser nobs. he likes to pick out the interesting and antique ones and customize his home with them. he really likes the oddly shaped ones, he has one starfish and one pickle on his nightstand table. likes to joke about touching all the knobs and fiddling with the knockers.
pippin: is lost in the lighting department. he’s staring up at all the pretty lights and hypnotizing fans. likes the remote controlled lights, enjoys messing with the demos. also likes collecting paint chips. (pippins also the kind of person to get really high and shit in the display toilets.) does not buy anything, maybe some beef jerky and skittles at the check outs.
boromir: this man has like 80 projects going on and is remarkably proficient in every conceivable area featured in the store. he’s here so much people think he works here. he kinda does. he’s happy to advise you, lead you to products, and lifts heavy things for little old ladies and swooning maidens. he’s happy to grab the things on the highest shelf as well as carry those bigs bags of dirt out to your care. he is just a naturally pure and helpful soul. <3
aragorn: has lost himself in scrap wood. straight to the lumber yard, straight to the pile of damaged and recycled wood. once a month, he comes and loads up as much as it will fit in a pickup truck. no one knows what he does with it but he keeps coming back. there are several theories around the store. either he’s building a bunker, has a side hustle by reselling it, makes massive fires or he does wood work. alternatively, he’s a homeless man building his own cabin in the woods so he can live away from society. that’s one’s probably the closest.
gandalf: mixes his own paint. he doesn’t work there but somehow he keeps getting back there and making his own custom colors. was known to pull a miracle and turn gray paint back into white. no one knows how he did this. likes to camp out in the seasonal section. enjoys lounging on couches and swings for long periods of time.
gimli: is so excited to walk into the tools section. wants all the toys. likes power tools in a way that’s both funny and scary. really likes chainsaws and leaf blowers, possibly because they pose the biggest threat to legolas. often gets flagged out the door because no one person needs that many tools and he must be up to something. he always beeps out the door because inevitably someone forgot to take off one of the sensors of his many, many tools. he used to be nicer about this but lately has lost patience with always being stopped out the door, and often will make a show of waving his receipt before leaving.
legolas: spends a good amount of time in the garden. i imagine he gets enamored with the fountains and ponds rather quickly, also likes the statues and fun pots. also, wanders through the garden and samples the plants. by samples i mean eat small bites of it, and if he finds the quality satisfactory he will purchase it. this is rarely the case and he often just goes around eating small bites of houseplants.

From above the Arctic circle - to my windowsill.
Inuit art is mysterious, strong…the shapes are solid and carefully considered. Carved from a single chunk of incredibly heavy green stone, this hunter with his seal strapped to his back - delights me. The way he is standing. How his mittens curl inward, and the growl on his face…
Anyway…
He had to come with me.
Last Saturday was Dave Stuart’s first foray into the world of online auctioneering. I honestly didn’t think he could pull it off, but it’s OK to be proved wrong.
The room was PACKED with stuff for sale, most of which belongs to himself.
We have been deeply concerned for David, as he is behaving oddly. He learned how to bid on the online auctions, and has succumbed to a hoarding addiction which has been consuming his every waking hour. He sits hunched over his laptop in the shabby little office, bidding against the rest of the world for high-end antiques. He is spending a LOT of money, then jumps into a van and drives all over the country to pick up his prizes.
David is not a young man - closing in on 80? His auction sales have remained our happy-hunting-ground for years now - we bid on decent (but damaged) antiques, and can bring them home for very little money. I get to work - restore / repair / spruce-up - and move it on to a better auction for resale.
This is our “extra” income - and we’ve loved every minute of it.
The Stuart auctions have become a bizarre circus over the last few months. He has had little or no stock to sell - the folks who consign their things have looked elsewhere, because instead of holding an auction every Saturday - he runs only two sales a month. In the world of the numblies and the dealers in crap to buy and sell - this is a deal-breaker. It’s easier to move items into one of the other houses that sell EVERY WEEK - and put a little cash into their pockets sooner rather than later.
David has CRAMMED his place with extreme high-end antiques. His first obsession was Staffordshire figures. First one, then ten, suddenly a hundred are all stood cheek-to-cheek along the tables which are normally reserved for things being sold.
He’s not selling these.
Likewise antique oil lamps with beautiful glass shades. First five, then 25, now over a hundred - none of which are being sold. They belong to him.
The auction room is filling up with lovely things, but what is actually being sold is crap. Yards of blue rope. Chunks of old chain. Plastic kettles with no lids, a box of broken china, and maybe an extinct radio with no knobs….
German mid-century art pottery.
Then came the clocks. A line of magnificent mantle clocks, marked the beginning of the new obsession - then came the 18th century brass dial tall-case grandfather clocks. Beautiful, expensive time pieces which now march the length and breadth of the auction room. There are over 20 of these - all acquired within the last two months.
None of these things are being sold, just hoarded. The back rooms are crammed with stacks of fine oriental carpets, statuary, brass standard lamps, and whatever else his itchy trigger-finger bid on during somebody else’s auction online….
We stopped in to look at his upcoming sale, and he had packed what was left of the room with BIG brown furniture. Highly polished and restored Georgian tables, chests of drawers, sideboards, etc - all of which he has paid far too much for, and cannot sell to his usual customers. (Including us.)
“I’m going online” sez he. “I need to get better bidders to sell better things, and have joined easyliveauctions “
Color me dubious. David can’t run his own microphone, the woman in the office can’t run the credit card machine, and he struggles with his own cellphone.
But he managed to pull it all off - and I am impressed! The sale was packed with new people. The computer link for live bidding was handled by a woman who sat beside him on the podium, and his wife took care of phone bids.
Daaaaammmnnnn……!
Nobody was happy. Everybody was cramped, miserable, uncomfortable, nowhere to sit, and the usual camaraderie is dead and buried.
Bidding on the floor was fine - but then the internet bids trashed the assembled mob - and took things into the stratosphere. Grumbling was audible, tempers raw. A strange, grim man who was shaped like an actual ham - stood with a penciled list at the back of the room - and paid whatever he had been told on the fine furniture. €2000 for a Georgian table. £400 for a Victorian work table. Prices un-dreamed of before. He took no pleasure in his work, didn’t meet anyone’s eyes, but went about his task with silent, unsmiling determination. He carried everything out to his huge white van, loaded up with ties and blankets - and away he went.
David’s auction was a success. For David. I fear it will only feed the fire of his shopping addiction, and lead to more frantic acquisition.
In the meantime - I managed to bring home the hunter and his seal - because I love him. One of the last pieces to fall under the hammer of a three and a half hour sale (?!) - and nobody in ireland likes Inuit sculpture. He can live here with me, and I will admire his sturdy form in the morning light -for years to come.
The times they are a’changing.

Progress
We’re making baby steps toward getting this house the way we’d like it.  I think it was Martha Stewart who once said that a house is always a work in progress.  While I agree with that, I’ve always thought that meant adding little things here and there, maybe updating a bathroom or two, or refreshing your color scheme or wall decor.  I want to get to a place where the “work in progress” is just new throw pillows or a pretty plant, ya’ know?  Okay, whine over. I confess that I’ve had fun the last few days.  I’d been on the hunt for a bedside table for Matt’s room.  I wanted something with a little character -  vintage, retro, whatever you want to call it.  I just didn’t want brand new factory-produced stuff.  I had poked around a couple of area antique stores and the stuff I found was either too big too small, too feminine, or too fragile.  I wasn’t having any luck.  Last Sunday we were driving back from dropping off the grandgirl and I was telling the mister all of that.  He asked if I’d looked at Goodwill. I had not.  So he pulled into the local Goodwill parking lot and I found the perfect piece right inside the front door for ten dollars.  Score!   It’s actually an old record cabinet, for storing albums - that made me love it even more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I brought it home, cleaned it up, and got to work. It only took a couple of Snapped podcasts to get it to this point.
Tumblr media
Why yes, that is a mountain of Amazon boxes in the garage.  We’re due for a trip to the recycling center.  Anywho, I put a nice, matte black on that cabinet and replaced the old knobs with these cool leather pulls.
Tumblr media
Instead of albums, I filled it with National Geographic magazines because our family is big on National Geo.
Tumblr media
And, HALLELUJAH, the carpet installers finally came this morning and I was able to put Matt’s room together.
Tumblr media
That little cabinet worked out perfectly!  Whew! Just in time, too. Matt is flying in tomorrow and then the whole fam damily will be here for the holiday weekend.  I still have plenty to do in this room, but for now it will be cool and comfortable for him. I also had time to put a clear coat on that little chair I painted. Then I had to find a fern. I had my heart set on a fern, not flowers.  I figured I could substitute another green plant, I just didn’t want to do flowers, I thought it might be too busy for that multi-colored chair.  No one has ferns for sale in late June, it’s more of a “Hey, it’s spring!” plant.  Most folks have killed their ferns by now.  I crossed my fingers and drove down the road to Clayton’s, a big farm stand with green houses.  Lo and behold they had one fern hanging with a few scraggly leftover plants, and she was half price! Score!  So this sad chair with the broken seat....
Tumblr media
is wearing some makeup and sitting on the front porch now.
Tumblr media
Yippee!   I love it when things work out. Although we still need to buy granite for the kitchen counters and hopefully get the cabinets painted, I don’t even want to think about it right now. I think we both want a break from begging people to do some work.   I’m going to sleep like a baby tonight.  Most of what has been worrying me is now checked off the to-do list.  Tomorrow I’ll do a big grocery haul. I have forgotten how to feed a crowd. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner for six for several days? I’m thinking taco bar one night, something on the grill another, and everything else I can think of sounds too hot.  Can’t we all just sit around and eat watermelon? I’ll just keep sandwich stuff on hand for lunches, but everyone likes different things for breakfast.  Maybe I should just buy a tub of greek yogurt and some granola and we can do fresh fruit parfaits.  Or maybe I’ll win the lottery tonight and I’ll have the whole weekend catered.  That sounds best. Alright, I’m off to plan menus and make a grocery list. It feels like we’ve made some progress around here and maybe, just maybe, these blog posts will become less whiny and more interesting.  UPS just delivered a curtain rod that I ordered (I wanted one with a French return) so the panels I bought for the sliders will be up soon.  Starting to look like someone lives here!  I’ll keep you posted. I hope that this bit of fluff has distracted you for a few minutes from the craziness of life.  Hang in there, we’re all due for a win.  Good things are coming. I just know it. Stay safe, stay well, stay positive. XOXO - Nancy

Affordable Vintage Interior Decorating Ideas
Nostalgic Charm on a Budget: Mastering the Art of Vintage Interior Design
Vintage interior design is a celebration of the visual splendour of the past and a trip back in time. It’s about bringing back the grace and allure of bygone eras in a modern environment. In this article, we’ll look at how to acquire this classic appearance without breaking the bank.
Recognising Vintage Style
Items that represent the fashions and patterns of the past and are at least 20 to 100 years old are what define vintage style. Each item narrates a tale and combines beauty and nostalgia. The secret is to combine different elements while keeping your design harmonious.
Finding Reasonably Priced Antique Items
Finding antique gems may be just as thrilling as interior design. For reasonably priced vintage items, thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, and internet marketplaces are treasures. Seek out items that are well-made, unique, and resonate with you.
Tips for thrift store shopping
Examine for Quality
Constantly look for durability, wear indicators, and repair possibilities.
Think Creatively
Consider an item’s potential beyond its present state. With a little care and attention, just think of what it may become.
Negotiate
Have no fear about haggling. It adds to the enjoyment and can result in large savings.
Including Antique Furniture
An eye-catching feature in your space might be vintage furniture. Select items that are both utilitarian and visually appealing. A mid-century contemporary dresser, an antique table, or an armchair from the past may give your room a special touch.
Bringing Back Vintage Furniture
Upholstery
Giving an antique couch or chair a new coat of upholstery will revitalise it.
Paint
An aged artwork might be given a fresh coat of paint. Select hues that go well with the furniture’s retro style.
Repairs
Even little fixes have a significant impact. Replace missing knobs, tighten loose screws, and straighten up shaky legs.
Vintage Decor on a Budget
You may really dabble with old aesthetics in decor. Characteristic elements for your room include retro light fixtures, antique mirrors, and framed old posters. To add texture and colour, use old textiles for tablecloths or drapes.
Handmade Retro Decor
Upcycle
Convert used materials into new ones. You may make a bookcase out of an old ladder or a quirky coffee table out of a suitcase.
Handmade Art
Produce original artwork influenced by retro elements. It’s economical and personal.
Antique Accessories
As part of your décor, incorporate antique items such as typewriters, vinyl records, and cameras.
How to Make a Retro Colour Scheme
When decorating retro, the colour scheme is quite important. Select subdued hues such as navy blue, sage green, or dusty pink. These hues create feelings of grace and nostalgia. To create contrast and intrigue, use vivid colours sparingly.
Blending Vintage and Modern
Blending retro and contemporary components may provide a well-balanced, harmonious style. You can create a timeless and modern look in your room by pairing a modern sofa with an antique coffee table or by adding contemporary art to a room filled with old furniture.
Balancing the Old and the New
Contrast
Make good use of contrast. It might look amazing to place a sleek modern light on an antique table.
Harmony
Make sure the flow is harmonic. A room may be brought together by using recurring colours or patterns.
Lighting’s Function in Vintage Decor
In retro décor, lighting is an essential instrument. The vibe may be created with an old chandelier or vintage table lights. Choose soft, warm lighting for a cosy atmosphere since even the temperature of the lightbulb may change the mood.
Antique Textiles: Including Texture and Warmth
Vintage home design heavily incorporates textiles. Layers of warmth and texture may be added with Persian carpets, velvet pillows, or lace curtains. To add depth, mix and combine various textiles.

What does it take to buy nice furniture? Do you have to be a big time millionaire? Or instead do you just need the right education? The fact is that a good teacher is all you need, and this article has been written to be your guide. Read on to learn more.
Before purchasing a piece of furniture, always open drawers and doors. You should not purchase a piece of furniture if the drawers do not open all the way and close evenly. Make sure the doors stay open and close properly. You should also check the knobs or handles to make sure they are properly attached. When you arrange your furniture, make sure that you do not place it too close to any heat sources. This can damage the material and shorten the life of these items. You should avoid placing furniture near air conditioning units as well, because the extreme cold can have a damaging effect on the material. If you are shopping for wooden furniture, particularly antiques, don't just look at the outside surfaces. You have to also check out the guts of the piece - behind doors, inside drawers. Many times, this inspection is going to let you make a better assessment of the furniture than you'd get by simply inspecting the surface wood. It's sometimes called secondary wood and these surfaces can help you figure out the construction quality, along with the age of the piece. Buying good furniture is easy as long as you know what to look for. Always look for manufacturers who pride themselves on producing a quality product. There are many companies who produce furniture that will not stand the test of time. Only buy furniture from a quality manufacturer who will stand by their product over the years. When considering a couch, opt for one that has removable cushions. These cushions can be flipped throughout the year so that wear and tear is at a minimum. If you can't flip your cushions then expect to have to buy a new couch every few years as the wear is bound to accumulate rather quickly. When buying furniture, quality is important. Custom furniture makers will not use nails and glue to join wood corners and ends together. They will use a process known as wood joinery. This produces a high quality joint that will be sturdier and will take more weight. Nails and glue construction will not deliver a solid quality product. Check the couch frame before purchasing. The board must be a tad over one-inch thick. If the sofa's board is thinner than that, the sofa will squeak. Try sitting on the sofa you are interested in and move around to see if the sofa makes any noises. Read all color description before buying any furniture from online. many times people select furniture based on the way that it looks. In many cases people that do this end up with mismatched furniture. A brown loveseat with a black chair won't look so good, so read the descriptions thoroughly. If you need furniture and want to save money, consider shopping at warehouse stores. Most of these stores do charge a membership fee; however, the money you will save will pay for the fee over and over again. These stores carry quality furniture at a fraction of the price of a furniture store. Consider both form and function when you are selecting a new piece of furniture. It is all well and good to buy a new item that looks stunning in your room. However, if telecommute sales is so impractical that it is not really usable for you and your family, you have really wasted your money. Window shop online to get a feel for shapes and styles. You should always pick out your furniture in person, but that doesn't mean you can't take advantage of the internet. Learn what styles are available and get a feel for what you want to look for when you head to the store. You can even get a good idea of what you should pay, so you don't get taken advantage of. These tips were drafted with you in mind, the uninitiated shopper who needs to find the perfect piece of furniture. On top of that, your budget was at the top of our thoughts. It is our desire to help you shop better, and if you use these tips, you will do just that and more.

. . Hurricane lanterns are well known for its versatility, mobility & reliablity, as the name signifies they stay burning amidst a hurricane. They are made from zinc-plated iron which protects against corrosion. The special engineered burner operates with no flickering, or soot from the flame. These lanterns also feature a heat resistant Fire proof globe that can withstand operation in the rain or snow, without cracking. The lamp burner has a flat wick, usually made of cotton. The lower part of the wick dips into the well & absorbs the kerosene by capillary action; the top part of the wick extends out of the wick tube of the lamp burner, which includes a wick-adjustment mechanism. Adjusting how much of the wick extends above the wick tube controls the flame. The wick tube surrounds the wick ensuring correct amount of air reaches the lamp burner. Adjustment is usually done by means of a small knob operating, which a toothed, metal sprocket is bearing against the wick. If the wick is too high, and extends beyond the burner cone at the top of the wick tube, the lamp will produce smoke and soot (un burned carbon). When the lamp is lit, the kerosene in the wick burns to produces a clear, bright, yellow flame. As the kerosene burns, capillary action in the wick draws more kerosene up from the fuel tank. All kerosene flat wick lamps use the dead flame burner design, where the flame is fed cold air from below & hot air exits above. The principle behind this lantern is cold air being circulated & fed through the tubes at the sides to the wick end thereby providing constant oxygen supply keeping the flame burning bright at the same time withstanding fierce wind flow. Flat wick lanterns burn brightest with kerosene fuel for which they are made for, but also work fine on clear lamp oil, Petrol & turpentine. . How Do I Choose the Best Vintage Eggbeater?
Most people now prepare their meals in food processors, but eggbeaters were a staple of every kitchen in the past. Although many modern eggbeaters are available today, vintage models are still preferred and used with the proper care. Additionally, they offer an intriguing viewpoint on contemporary fine art and photography in San Diego. Even though going to a store in person is the best option, many online merchants offer free shipping on returns so you can find the eggbeater that's right for you. First, though, how do these operate?
The Vintage Eggbeater: A History
Vintage eggbeaters were initially created as a mixing device rather than just for whisking eggs. The beaters are spun by hand, cranking the beater's large double-sided drive wheel, which transfers the handle's motion to the two bevel pinions. The rotary egg whisk helps save a lot of time and effort. It has been produced in a variety of designs and styles, the most popular of which have painted handles in hues of red, green, etc. It also contributed to the development of the electric mixer. Isn't it amazing?
Tumblr media
Things to Consider When Choosing the Best Vintage Eggbeater
The Best Vintage Egg Beaters are popular with many eggbeater enthusiasts because of their sturdy fabrication. Typically, you can locate them at antique shops, yard sales, and online auction websites. The drawback? It's the design of the vintage beaters that is not very versatile.
Although they are just as effective as any contemporary beater, most people only add them to their kitchens for aesthetic reasons. Therefore, choosing the best one to match you is essential. Here are some things to keep in mind while purchasing the best vintage eggbeater for you:
The Design
Even if you only occasionally intend to use the eggbeater, pick the comfiest model you can. A holding handle, whether positioned horizontally on top or vertically to the side, may be challenging if you have large hands because it is typically relatively small. Most likely, a knob would be more comfortable. The crank's cylinder shape could also be problematic.
The Shape
The shape of the beaters themselves will impact your blending. A rounded beater with flat spokes is the ideal design. To get batter off the side of the bowl, rounded beaters work better than elongated beaters, producing a more homogeneous mixer.
The Bottom Line: Remember Your Purpose
Remember, the best vintage eggbeaters are once-in-a-lifetime investments at pocket-friendly rates. Base your decision just on the action and comfort of the beater, not the price. You can buy them at Martin Trailer Fine Art Photography, a contemporary Fine Art Photography Studio in San Diego.

Designer Matilda wanted to fill her new London house with surprises to make it different from the typical home. First she used a striped runner on the staircase.
Tumblr media
She replaced the kitchen door with a larger one with glass panels, painted in red gloss.
Tumblr media
The kitchen was custom built, and she had the cabinets painted sage green. The walls were given a lime wash.
Tumblr media
The scalloped granite backsplash was a late addition and made from the same granite as the worktops. The fluted sink was £60 from eBay.
Tumblr media
'In the kitchen we have used a mix of handles, some from an old ship, mixed with antique brass bits. A combination of knobs and door handles looks more personal and less shop fitted,” says Matilda.
Tumblr media
In the larder Matilda used red grout between the white tiles.
Tumblr media
In the living room, Matilda combined pink linen and ticking for the curtains, with bamboo blinds. The blue sideboard (left) was bought at a sample sale, the red shelving unit was designed by Matilda and built by her husband's company. The lamp, chairs and table are vintage.
Tumblr media
The red unit hides a radiator and is flanked by deep drawers on either side.
Tumblr media
Matilda sourced most of the furniture in this room second hand, at antique fairs, reclamation yards and eBay.
Tumblr media
A large painting by the Australian artist Emma Gale hangs between two vintage toleware lights with cane shades.
Tumblr media
The scullery curtain was made from a ticking fabric.
Tumblr media
A painting by Fei Wei Wei hangs on the upstairs landing. The floor is painted in a checkerboard design.
Tumblr media
In the bedroom Matilda sourced the bed from eBay, upholstering the headboard herself.
Tumblr media
The cane paneled wardrobes were built by her husband’s company and painted in the same color as the walls.
Tumblr media
The bathroom mirror is flanked by lights from IKEA. The sink was sourced from a reclamation yard.

. Flat wick lanterns burn brightest with kerosene fuel for which they are made for, but also work fine on clear lamp oil, Petrol & turpentine. .
