Dracula, Daily, Done!
Tumblr media
We did it! We've reached November 6th! The Time Loop resets itself anew We've finished Dracula!
At a rough estimate, I've churned out about 155 individual sketches since May 3rd for this little daily sketch project. Who knew a roughly six month/400 page novel could be so long?
Thank you so so much to everyone who's stopped by and liked, reblogged, commented or followed! Your support was wonderful and desperately appreciated. It's been a joy to participate in Dracula Daily properly this year. This book means so much to me, and getting to share it in art form has been a fantastic, cathartic challenge.
I have plans to maybe go in, fix up a few of the more rushed/wonky drawings, and possibly produce a little Dracula zine featuring all the sketches in chronological order + some selected painted scenes, but we'll see how that shakes out!
For now, thank you all so much again. I hope you stick around now the Dracula party's ended. I have a new story with Big Finish coming out in December for the Eleventh Doctor, and a few secret projects arriving in 2024, so there's plenty in store!

things that made me absolutely lose my marbles, despite my not being of fainting disposition, as I was listening to @re-dracula:
1. Mina continuing to quietly, bitterly moan 'unclean...' as Jonathan was soothing her. 7/10 that HURT okay
2. The decision to actually include Jonathan's voice hoarsing through the burial rights as Jack was describing the scene. 10/10 pure painnn!
3. The fact that nobody seems to know what 'Godalming' is pronounced like, because the Harkers & Co keep saying GOdalming, but here Jack Seward is, no shit no care, calling him GoDALming all the way. 12/10 totally relatable, made me cackle every time

One of the things I'm taking away from the second go round of Dracula Daily (and particularly from David Ault's excellent performance in Re: Dracula) is how much I like Lord Arthur Godalming.
Like. On the surface and the first time round he stands out the least of Lucy's suitors, and given how much time we hear from Jack, he can come off the most developed. Quincy, of course, gives us a heck of a lot of personality with relatively little (again, compared to how much we get from Jack). Arthur, though, doesn't have the same volume of words to develop, nor the instantly clear personality. He's just Lucy's fiancee, Jack and Quincy's friend, the heroes of light's wealthy benefactor.
But God, this poor man. He's suffered several immense losses in a very short period, been forced to see the woman he loved as a monster, and then had to put her down so she could rest in peace. Beyond the emotional burdens of such losses, he has to deal with the legal matters and the settling of affairs for three different people, probably doing whatever one needs to do to take his father's place in the House of Lords (something I know absolutely nothing about but I assume there's things to do there), AND the earth shattering revelation the supernatural is real, monsters do exist, and the one who killed Lucy is still out there.
And all of that while having to abide by the Victorian standards of manhood. Stalwart, strong, showing no emotions that could make him seem weak.
I think the scene in September 30th, where Mina comforts him and finally he has the chance to let go of all of these burdens he's felt he must carry alone, all of the grief and sorrow he's been forced to carry, he can for at least a moment put aside the mask of manliness society insist he wear and just let himself be a man who has lost his father and his fiancee within days of each other, who is dealing with situations beyond belief.
Obviously we've seen him cry and grieve before but it always felt like he was stifling it to a degree because, well. He only has his male friends to lean on now and the stupid proprieties of society mean he can only lean so much. But now he's had a chance to finally let go, made a connection with Lucy's dearest friend and a new sister of choice. He has his friends, he's finally been allowed to mourn in the way he's truly feeling...and now he's ready to help in whatever way possible to avenge Lucy.
Arthur comes off to me as a very strong character, a man driven by great love, who's emotions, as constrained as they may be, are one of his greatest strengths (and, of course, every good monster hunting group needs a financial benefactor). He's not a flat character at all, he's not forgettable character. Lucy loved him for a reason and, I think, in the moment his grief finally breaks, we get a glimpse at that.
I think that one of the good things of Dracula Daily has been making people realize how good of a character Jonathan Harker is, how pop culture has done damage to the true character of Lucy and Mina…I think we should add that its done a good job of making one care for a character as Arthur, who at first glance seems flat and boring.
Or at least it's made me appreciate him more. And I still want to know how he and Jack and Quincy became friends and what sort of shenanigans they got up to before the events of the book.

"Seven years ago we all went through the flames; and the happiness of some of us since then is, we think, well worth the pain we endured."
Although Dracula was published in 1897, some think that it takes place in 1893 because of the way the days and dates used line up. If that's the case, Jonathan Harker's epilogue, seven years later, would have been added around 1900. A new era bubbling with new change and new conventions. The story ends with Jonathan looking ahead to a new century filled with the unknown and being able to look on the past, despite its darkness, "without despair."

What do you think each person from the drac pack would dress up as for Halloween?
Jonathan and Mina are a couple’s costume, no question. Gomez and Morticia Addams are the likeliest bet.
Lucy goes for a dramatique Shakespearean look. Ophelia or one of Macbeth’s witches.
Jack tries to play himself off as too mature for such things, but does ultimately crack and go for a Victor Frankensteinish look, complete with streaks, antique attire, and a (hopefully prop) bone saw.
Arthur is still very much Not one for scary style, so probably a more pop cultural costume. He likes going as superheroes, but sticks more with the comic book designs rather than movie versions. He doesn’t like how watered down the cinematic outfits look.
Quincey opts for subtler looks as he doesn’t like any getup he can’t easily maneuver in. He’s usually one to wear his own clothes, but with makeup jobs that make him ‘himself, but something happened.’ This results in Cowboy Ghost/Werewolf/Zombie/Alien etc.
Van Helsing is addicted to silly mascot costumes. Specifically because he likes to be on trick-or-treater duty and wants a friendly-silly character to greet the little kids at the door.
Renfield flips a coin between a stunning stage-ready reproduction of a Doctor Faustus costume or a chef. The latter’s props are…interesting. (He considers the night a win when Jack looks at the menu in his hand and reads what/who the main course is.)
BONUS:
Dracula cheats by dusting off his old warlord raiment and/or armor. He gets several compliments on the design and the realism of the maroon stains.
The Weird Sisters oddly avoid going as their namesakes. Straws are drawn between going as Jennifer Check, Tomie, and a Bride of Frankenstein with a severed Creature head for a purse.

Wow. I just realized. Arthur gets his warrant to check Dracula's coffin because he said he believes the box contains "something stolen from a friend of his."
That's not a lie. If Dracula's in that box, so is his blood, the blood he stole from Mina. The coffin literally does contain something "stolen from a friend of his."

“His bundle of names links all our little band of men together.”
Jonathan didn’t say his and Mina’s son’s full “bundle of names” but we all know his middle initials are MD, D.Ph., D.Litt., etc

Lucy writes to Mina saying that she's feeling well and Arthur says she's doing great - but then the very next day we hear from Arthur himself to find that she's looking awful and he's genuinely concerned. Love that unrealiable narration.

No one is a visionary anymore. They don't even include Arthur's small rat-mauling terriers that he picks up one by one over the threshold smh
Honestly, the Dogs Hate Dracula factor as a whole deserves a spotlight.
Dogs howl for Jonathan and Lucy's sake, as if knowing what's coming for them. A dog tried to attack Wolf Dracula after he left the Demeter, prompting it being slain. A dog in the cemetery was set off by being too near to Dracula's hiding place. The terriers tore apart his guard rats. Hell, even the wolves don't like him--they came to attack Dracula's caleche! They had to be mind-controlled away, just like the Count has to force them into everything else.
Pair that with the Drac Attack Pack being comparable to a pack of dogs chasing the wolf from their flock, and the whole canine motif is begging to be acknowledged by any movie or book.
Much like 100000 other themes and scenes that could be utilized, but I won't hold my breath for those either
