the most monotonously uncharismatic matty has ever been on camera.
But u would be too if you-- post asg in your hometown w your entire extended family-- had just been awakened from a thousand year exhaustion nap by your job's peppy socials team armed n ready with inane copy for you to read. ONE TAKE ONLY. oh and reminder to self: do. Not. blurt out that you spent ASG 2020 weekend in pub bathrooms and arena supply closets sucking off ur sworn enemy in the media. GO!
But this is still the most entertaining hockey monotone ever????
that blink at the end = "i hate myself. But i do not regret decisions"💀

for the "things you said" writing meme -- matthew/leon, 12 :)
Thank you for the request <3 I realised very quickly I have no idea what constitutes a 'mini' fic. I struggle to write 'mini' anything lol. Hopefully this still satisfies :)
12. things you said when you thought i was asleep
It takes all of Matthew's willpower not to reach over and smash his phone just to shut off the alarm. All that saves his wallet and an awkward trip to the Apple store is the split-second realisation that the shrieking in his ear isn't his usual alarm.
It's a ringtone. Not his own, either.
He pries his eyes open to find the world through the window is still dark. One of the balcony doors is still ajar, letting in a cool night breeze. He's lying on his side in his own bed, the end of the all-star weekend memorialized by several aches and bruises.
His hips and ass are a little sore too, but that's unrelated. Technically.
The ringing stops. Someone huffs behind him.
Someone. Yeah, no, Matthew knows who it is. They may have met up at the bar once the media was done swarming, but Matthew was far from drunk. Painfully sober, in fact. If he's being honest with himself, he was hoping things would turn out this way.
One more time. One more moment. Because it's been a long time since they were them. Longer still since the sex was just sex, since hate became want. Matthew is strong in a lot of ways, but not against this.
"Davo." Leon's voice is low, and still gruff from sleep when he answers his phone. He sits up on his side of the bed, trying not to disturb Matthew, pulling the covers back up over Matthew's shoulder like he thinks he'll freeze to death in this balmy Florida winter.
Usually Matthew's a heavy sleeper. But never when Leon's around. He makes it impossible for Matthew to completely relax, to let time slip by. Leon's just too big of a presence, almost too much to bear. It was more important that everything linger, to bask in the strange comfort of their relationship, whatever it was. They had so little time. Even less, now.
"I know it's late. No, no, I'm not at the hotel. I'm... I'm with Tkachuk."
Leon says his last name like it's wrong, like it's rotting on his tongue.
When he corrects himself, says, "Matthew", it's better, lighter. Like it's ambrosia.
Matthew remembers when Leon Draisaitl saying his name wouldn't have meant a damn thing to him. When that simple act didn't fill him with fondness.
In the silence, Matthew can hear McDavid talking on the other end, but can't quite make out what he's saying. Matthew tucks up under the duvet, breathing quiet and even, trying to focus instead on the distant sound of waves and the ticking clock on his wall.
Ticking. Always ticking. Time bleeds out when they're together.
He doesn't even remember falling asleep last night, but he wishes he hadn't now. He wishes he'd stayed awake longer, just to... just to see him. To look Leon in the eye, to talk about everything and nothing until dawn, to feel big, too-warm hands on his body more and more and more. He wants to make sure he'll remember how Leon feels, sounds, tastes.
"Connor," Leon says, a warning, followed by a sigh. "I know. I know, okay? It was stupid, but..."
Maybe it was. Matthew has a good thing here in Florida. Better than ever. He was happy to leave Alberta behind and start over. So why did leaving make him feel like a coward?
Because leaving was about Calgary, and the Flames. About his career and his future. It wasn't about Leon. Leon was the wrench in the gears; the one thing he didn't expect to have to say goodbye to, the kind of hurt he never could have accounted for.
"I needed to see him." Leon sounds helpless. He's not the only one.
The only time he's heard Leon so lost was after his team was knocked out of the playoffs last season. The Oilers meant nothing--Matthew was pretty fucking glad considering they'd beat out the Flames--but he never wanted to hear Leon like that again.
He definitely never wanted to be the cause of it. Not like this.
Leon is still mumbling into his phone. "Yeah, I'm fine. He's... we're good. He's happy."
A hand settles on Matthew's head. Fingers play with his curls, nails scratch his scalp. A thumb presses just behind Matthew's ear, stroking the soft skin where only hours before Leon had put his lips, whispering sweetness and filth in equal measure.
It takes everything for Matthew not to groan, to whimper and surrender, roll over and climb on top of Leon and take all over again. Beg him to take something--everything--from Matthew.
"I don't know," Leon says then.
It's easy to guess what McDavid asked.
He's happy. But are you?
"I can't even tell him I still love him."
Still. Matthew didn't even know there was a before, let alone a still. Leon never said anything. Fuck, if Matthew wasn't busy trying to remember how to breathe, he'd roll over and punch him.
Then again, what did Matthew ever say? They never talked about it. Never let those closet hook-ups and slipping out back doors and little drinks and dinners and overnights excused as practical necessity be anything more than that. A bunch of chirps and half-truths and aborted discussions because it was all becoming too much. There was too much uncertainty. Too many ways it could go wrong.
It did go wrong. It became something. It became real.
Maybe that would have changed something. Maybe it wouldn't have changed anything at all. It doesn't matter now. Matthew left, and neither of them said a word about things like love, because it was easier to hope it would shrivel and die with distance and time.
"I know I'm being stupid." Leon pauses when McDavid interrupts, then huffs. "No, I am. Fuck, I really thought I'd get over it. Maybe I will. Eventually."
Don't you fucking dare, you piece of shit, Matthew wants to scream.
"Not sure I can, though." Leon swallows so loud Matthew can hear it. Then quieter, like he's not sure he's even allowed to admit it, he says, "I don't really want to."
He's still playing with Matthew's hair, occasionally dragging a finger over his bare shoulder or down his back, tracing imaginary lines across Matthew's flesh. Like he's something to be memorized and cherished.
They're both so fucking stupid. Matthew bites his lip and tries not to choke on the lump in his throat. Could be his heart, climbing right up and out of his mouth. He clings to the sheets with shaking hands.
"I'm not going to fuck up what he's got here," Leon says tiredly, voice thick with tension and pathetic resignation.
Leon's not here to drag him back. He wouldn't do that. So why is he here? Just to torture them both? Being with him doesn't feel like torture. It feels like winning. It feels like defiance and decadence and too much and not enough. It feels like what could have been and what could still be.
He didn't find Leon at that bar and bring him home out of pity, or nostalgia, one last fuck for old times sake. It was... it just was. Not an ending. Not some final goodbye. Proof maybe there could still be something. Getting over it was never an option, Matthew knew that well before he stepped onto the ice as a Panther and found himself staring Leon down all over again.
Matthew's vision is blurring. His eyes sting, warm and wet. There's blood pounding in his ears, and a hand clutching his heart, a vice around his lungs. He hardly remembers how to breathe.
He doesn't catch the rest of Leon's conversation, except something about meeting Connor back at the hotel tomorrow. Meaning he's staying the night, at least. He's staying.
When Leon hangs up the phone, Matthew finally comes up for air. He relaxes his shoulders, listening to the soft thump as Leon taps his phone against his forehead over and over. Then it clatters on the side table. Leon sighs, sniffs, and sinks back under the covers. He tucks right up against Matthew's back, still burning like a furnace, soft muscle and skin brushing Matthew's spine in all the right ways.
He throws an arm around Matthew and finds one of his hands, worming his fingers through the gaps to hold it. His palm is sweaty, not that it matters at all to Matthew. He can't help squeezing Leon's hand a little, but if Leon notices, he doesn't say a word.
Not until he's wrapped tight around Matthew, near suffocating, like any part of them that isn't touching is a sin.
"Love you," Leon mumbles, barely more than a whisper, pressing his lips right to the base of Matthew's neck. Matthew's body can't seem to decide whether to shiver or melt under the heat.
Leon says it like it's inevitable. Painful. Pitiful.
What he's saying is, I'm sorry I love you. I'm sorry I couldn't say it before. I'm sorry I don't know how to say it now. I'm sorry it's too late, it's the wrong place, the wrong time.
Like he doesn't think Matthew could ever understand. And that's the worst part of it all. They're still not on the same page. Tearing down what they never built.
If Leon's only brave enough to say it when Matthew's asleep, then Matthew will just have to be brave enough to say it in the light of day. He doesn't run, and he won't now that he knows he doesn't have to.
He stares into the night outside his window, listening to Leon breathe, feeling his heart beat through Matthew's chest like that's where it longs to be.
Tomorrow. Tomorrow maybe they can stop chasing time long enough to make the most of what they have. To make up for what they've wasted. And whatever happens after, well, maybe they can stop being afraid of that, too.

having only recently really delved deep into the Nico/Nolan lore and obviously already in deep with the Nico/Jack stuff.
I need fic about the Nolan - Nico - Jack of it all. How does Jack feel about Nico’s Nolan romance? How does Nolan feel about Nico’s new golden boy?
(and how does poor Jesper Bratt feel because he’s lived through all of it)

do you know anything about any of those rubber bracelets Jack wears? like their origin or if any of them have some special significance? I see them on him all the time (locker room videos, at the f1 event last summer, etc) thanks again for all your historian work 🫡🫡
yes, actually!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the orange one is for a kid named brady who is a cancer survivor that he's been wearing since may 2022
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the yellow/black one could be multiple things (im assuming suicide prevention based) he started wearing last yearish
Tumblr media
and the grey/white one has a suicide hotline number on it
Tumblr media
the red one he's been wearing since HS but ive never been able tell what it says. and the greyish one i think he started wearing sometime in mid 2020. it used to be whiter LOL
the blue one seems to not be constant or it’s just always hidden by the others but i don’t think that one has anything on it, it looks like it’s got a twisty design. first sighting is this pic from feb 2023 asg
Tumblr media
if anyone else has any info to share very much welcome!

Hey, hope you're doing okay. I hope you don't mind me asking, but I am rather new to the mattdrai fandom and I couldn't help but wonder:
Was Matthew really as bad as a lot of fic lead to believe in his earlier hockey years in Calgary? And was he really disliked in the room - where there rumours like that? So many fics build on this premise, and seeing him now in Florida and hearing all the nice things his teammates say about him and seeing the things he does himself and the insane good hockey he plays... it's hard to believe.
It's so strange also that it's so rarely mentioned that Leon was the one to be sent down to the minors, not Matthew.
Plus what I don't get: matthew is a lot hotter than Leon? why is it always told like Leon is the hottest dude on earth while Matthew is nothing? comparing early pics and pics from now... it's just not true? Leon looks good, a bit bland IMO, but Matthew is and was just hot in a very unique and special way. maybe because he isn't that bland generic good looking Leon is? But good looking in a special way? so that got a lot longer than I thought it would, hope you don't mind the ask.
i don't mind you asking at all! this is basically my roman empire so MY apologies if this gets unwieldy but i have FEELINGS about matthew's early fic portrayal lmao
in his six years on the flames, matthew was always one of the top five scorers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
his rookie year, he was sixth in rookie scoring
Tumblr media
the season he was picked for his first ASG, the flames were 16th in the league at the time all star rosters were announced and matthew was their top scorer.
Tumblr media
so it's not like he was the best player from a bottom of the league team or going because he was the home town boy, he was a playoff team's best player (both at the asg break and when the season was eventually suspended because of covid).
and even in his career worst year (2020-2022), he ended the year as their third best scorer and only six points behind johnny (the leader). and as one of calgary's beat reporters said in his end of the year review, Matthew was "good, but not quite as good as the Flames needed him to be."
Tumblr media
so i've never really understood why people were portraying him like that either and still haven't figure out if most of it was unreliable narrator kind of stuff or if some authors actually thought he was bad before he had his breakout season, but it doesn't reflect reality.
as for him being disliked in calgary, that all stems from jake muzzin flipping the puck at him, and the subsequent players only meeting that took place after it, in which matthew allegedly told the team he was upset they didn't join him in the scrum after and he was then told him it can't be a riot every night.
before that there were never any rumors that i'm aware of that he was unliked in the room, and in 2019 gio, who most people tend to think is the one who told matthew to tone it down, said this about another players only meeting:
Tumblr media
so while the 2021 players only meeting was a story because matthew wasn't playing like his usual self afterward, i've never thought it was indicative of him not being liked by his teammates. and honestly, you have to take it all with a grain of salt anyway because while guys obviously bullshit the media, at the practice after the players only meeting guys talked about how there was a general lack of emotion, and how they came out there trying to have fun with each other and put it behind them, and in the postgame the next night, gio specifically sites getting into scrums and mixing it up when asked how much more emotion they played with in that win compared to earlier losses, so if mixing it up was good the very next night, the math doesn't quite add up, yk?
but johnny did confirm in his spittin chiclets appearance about two weeks after the muzzin incident that matthew was pissed after they left him out to dry that night, and when asked about matthew's struggles that season darryl sutter said matthew needed to, and would, get back to playing to his identity, so the whole cause and effect of the muzzin incident on matthew's play that season isn't completely unfounded, but i do think multiple guys saying the team needed to play with more emotion, johnny saying in the chiclets episode that the guys skating off didn't find out about the puck flip until they saw it on sportsnet and saying he felt bad about it, and the new coach coming in and getting matthew to play back to his style shows that it wasn't as personal as it was made out to be.
anyway, the flames may not have be as tight knit as the panthers are, but matthew had his people there. he's bffs with hanifin and his friendship with sam bennett is part of what drew him to florida. johnny always says great things about him, blake coleman called him the heartbeat of the team, and was such an important voice in the room that the flames suffered when he and gudbranson were no longer around to tell sutter to chill the fuck out when he was being too hard on guys in the room.
he probably wasn't close with every teammate, most people aren't friends with all their coworkers, but he wasn't some sort of loner in that locker room.
as for the looks, that's all down to personal preference. leon is definitely very conventionally attractive and while matthew has definitely glowed up in the last few seasons, he was by no means ugly. i wouldn't even say he's really unconventionally attractive either. he's got a good face and was a cute teen and people who are like "oh no i find matthew tkachuk attractive now" have literally never made sense to me. but again! personal preference and all that.
again, my apologies if you weren't looking for THIS MUCH of an answer to your question but this isn't even all the sources i pulled up when i first got this ask so i did TRY to keep it short lol

Hi!! I'm totally in love with linger, thank you for your amazing work! I've bing-read all your stories and I LOVED them. Do you have any recs for other good Matthew/Leon fics from other authors? I'm officially hooked now :D
aw thank you anon! that's very kind of you. some deeply biased recs (as in, read anything they write but these are a few of my faves):
head above water by @msmargaretmurry (rivals to lovers, alternate version of the 2022-23 season): i mean, of course im gonna rec the og ratnovel. the interiority and unreliability? so well done. and matthew is so fucked in the head in this one (affectionate). the best part about finishing my latest long fic is now im in the right brain space that i can do a reread and im: excited
preference by @hopetorun (winner's room): i love weird lightly dubious but lightly not sex that then turns into an arrangement that then has all these undercurrents of feelings that bump up against other priorities and are only ever exacerbated by unexpected tenderness. per-son-al-ly! and no sex scene ever feels like a repetition of another, which is such a skill
pull me closer (we ain't ever getting older) by @ohtemporas (leon is at bc and matthew is at bu): as we all know i love the grossness of hooking up in college and this one TRULY delivers; i especially love the way rivals to lovers and the immense distance that a two year age gap becomes when one of you is a freshman are handled. as always the ending got me real fuckin good.
what you got is hard to find by void_fish (omegaverse; omega!leon): i owe some kind of intellectual debt to jay for showing me how fun omegaverse can be without all the trappings that sometimes get added, and god the ending of the first in this series still cracks me the fuck up every time i read it
and one less intensely biased rec (lol):
if you handed over your body by photovoltaic (2020 ASG weekend): people who can convey this much ambiguity and emotion in under 3k are so impressive to me, i think about this one a LOT. love something concise and dense and punchy.

idk if you’re still doing the fanfic title ask thing but if you are, mattdrai + neutral zone
i feel like this would be a sweet, funny little story where they have their bye weeks at the same time and coincidentally wind up on vacation at the same resort. big romcommy vibes. more of a @bropunzeling style joint than my own usual style, but i would do my best 😂
obviously leon's there with connor, third-wheeling with him and lauren, since they're coming straight from the all-star game. matthew, also coming straight from the asg, is flying in to meet up with some friends — maybe brady's bye week was before the asg, but robby thomas, or some florida pals, or whoever are there. mostly i just want him to be free of familial obligations so that he can let his freak flag fly.
anyway, the all-star weekend was good for everyone involved — let's say this is set this coming year, so no one was thrilled about going to cold toronto and losing out on three extra days of real vacation, not like florida, which was basically just extra vacation, but it was fun enough. neither the pacific or the atlantic won; none of our main cast here became the main character of the weekend, but there were some fun moments. matthew and leon didn't really talk during the asw, didn't really talk during last year's asw (although, to be fair, matthew was very busy playing host last year), because the thing is, they don't really have any reason to interact now that they're not in the same division.
leon didn't think he'd miss it, but he kind of misses it. the battle of alberta isn't nearly as exciting now. matthew pissed him off a lot when they were younger, yeah, but he has always been fun to play against. the 2020 asg was the first time they ever had a real conversation and it wasn't a big thing or anything, but it was kind of a turning point in the somewhat one-sided animosity, and by the time the 2022 playoffs rolled around, they had developed this kind of almost-friendly (slightly flirty?) respect. matthew still pissed him off on the ice, yeah, but they had some laughs, too, at faceoff circles, between whistles. leon started to believe the people that said, well, if he was on your team you'd love him.
and then matthew got himself traded to florida, built himself a happy new life there, became the main character of the nhl, etc. leon's not not happy for him, but maybe, when he thinks about it in certain moods, he does prickle a little at how easily matthew left the alberta of it all behind.
meanwhile matthew figures they were all just glad to be rid of him. he's been having a great time in florida. a great enough time that it's mostly healed the sting of how his last season in calgary ended and how frustrating his career there was sometimes. there was a time in his life when he would have really, really liked for leon draisaitl to like him, but he's totally past that now.
anyway, due to a series of somewhat comedic near-misses at the airport, they don't realize they're going to the same place until they get onto the plane and they're all in first class: matthew, leon, connor, lauren. everyone's like uhhhhh ?? but matthew makes a joke, retreats to his seat behind them, puts his headphones on, doesn't make conversation except to charm the flight attendants. when they land, connor asks him where he's headed, if he wants to share their cab. matthew politely declines. he's not trying to be anti-social, he's just not trying to intrude on someone else's vacation.
but, of course, the resort isn't huge. it takes, like, a day for matthew's group to run into leon again — at the tiki bar on the beach, where leon is loitering even though lauren and connor are down by the water, because he's feeling particularly third wheel-y today. matthew had the right idea, finding a whole group to glom onto after the asg. all this to say, he's kind of relieved to see other people he kind of knows, even if it all feels a little awkward. but hey, they're on vacation. everyone can be friends here.
cue a beachy vacation montage of drinking and laughing and playing volleyball on the beach and splashing into the water — leon (and often connor and lauren — i feel like there are other wags around with matthew's group of friends) gets kind of folded into the group, and here on vacation away from all the hockey stuff, past rivalries, etc, it turns out that they just kind of click. they're both super competitive, even about dumb things like beach volleyball — but that's fun when the stakes are low, when they're on the same team. matthew's always checking in to make sure leon's having a good time if he's hanging with them while connor and lauren are off doing coupley things — he's always making sure everyone's having a good time, really, and leon starts to really get why his teammates in florida talk about him the way they do. leon is surprisingly funny and surprisingly affectionate when he doesn't want to kill you, and matthew keeps getting that old familiar feeling that he'd really like for leon to like him.
it's only like two days in when they get tipsy and hook up, which is probably a good thing, because it's so mind-bogglingly hot that if they'd held out until the end of the week and just did it once at the end, they would have both gone a little crazy not getting to do it again right away. cue all sorts of sneaking off to have all sorts of gross, sweaty vacation sex, and maybe getting a little obsessed with each other in the process.
the last night of the trip, the whole combined group of them has a big dinner on the beach and everyone just hangs out until late, long after the sun goes down. matthew and leon keep not-so-subtly making eyes at each other, trying to gauge when they're gonna sneak off to go wreck each other, but matthew is also a little in his head about this being the last day of vacation, because he's 100% sure this is gonna be a "what happened in bye week stays in bye week" situation, which is how it should be, anything else would be too complicated and make no sense, but he knows that despite knowing all that logically, it's gonna do a number on him to fly home alone after this whirlwind — whatever it is, with leon, so at some point he disappears, and after a while leon finds him sitting down by the water a little ways away, looking out at the ocean.
leon goes to sit with him. kisses his shoulder, but doesn't try to make conversation. he kind of thinks he knows what matthew's thinking, but it takes him a while to figure out what to say about it in a way that won't be too embarrassing if he's wrong. eventually he settles on, "we should do this again sometime."
matthew looks over, surprised. "you'd want to?"
leon shrugs. "i mean. it's been fun, right?"
and then they make out on the beach, and then they go back to one of their rooms and have sex, and then shower sex, and then morning sex, all of it increasingly clingy in a way they will not discuss until, like, sexcation #4 at least, but leon does kiss matthew's cheek when they part ways at the airport later, and matthew's friends tease him mercilessly about it for the rest of the day.

3, 9, 10, 19, 20, 33, 37, 52 for the mattdrai ask game? (sorry for asking so many in one go!) <3 <3 <3
3. What do you think Matthew said to Leon in the faceoff circle during the 2022 playoffs?
left up to my imagination, something smart like "wanna get off the ice yet?"
9. What do you think Matthew meant when he said 'I can't answer that or he’ll get mad at me' in response to Leon's 'get off the ice' comment?
i honestly have no clue. my brain turns those words over in my head like rocks in a tumbler all the time and i still can't reach a conclusion. one of lifes mysteries!! but someday someone is gonna bring it up again, idk just a feeling
10. What do you think Leon meant when he said 'It might have gotten taken a little bit out of context'? What context did Leon want it to be taken in?
a joking context maybe?? but the way he's so locked in when he says 'i'd rather get off the ice' it's hard to come off any other way than serious in my eyesss. maybe its the german in him
19. Songs that remind you of them?
a lot !!! been slowly adding songs to this playlist over the last year for ones that really stand out to me
20. Favorite Matthew moment of all time? Favorite Leon moment of all time? Favorite Mattdrai moment of all time?
matthew: his hat trick in game one against the oilers in the 21/22 playoffs. leon: can i say that interview for the asg 23 where he's just building a sandcastle 😭 mattdrai: i mean. that 2020 goal, but also the unofficial mattdrai goals. the time (last season? i think?) where matthew's fumble lead to a leo goal, and when matty was still on the flames where the puck left leons stick and ended up with matthew and he scored a goal.
33. What are popular Mattdrai fic tropes that do you not like?
there's not too many i actively avoid, but sometimes matthew gets portrayed as a little tooo helpless. like...uwu-ification. which i do stand by on occasion, but sometimes it just kinda takes me out of a story
37. Do you think Leon is grumpy / stoic? Do you think Matthew is insecure?
i think there are aspects of both of them that lend themselves to these tropes, but i don't think leon is as cold a bitch as most fandom make him out to be, and i think maybe flames-era matty was insecure and finding himself but he seems very confident in himself now. not to say that there's not insecurity lying underneath that.
but like idk if you know that one post flames/blues game interview with johnny gaudreau where matthew is asked about what his dad would think (then he says how he's brady's biggest fan, rambles on about how he probably wont even get a text from his dad, etc), and i would be surprised to see him answer a question that way now.
52. Would they drop the gloves for each other if they were on the same team?
answered!

okay so 1-53 for our mattdrai ask meme, pls ❤️😈😇
just kidding darling, let's say 3, 9, 21, 25 (because I'm evil muhahaha) and 36
I will be (im)patiently awaiting your answer
thank you my dear as always for the ask! I know you'd ask me them all if you could <3 (and I'd probably answer them all if I could lol)
3. What do you think Matthew said to Leon in the faceoff circle during the 2022 playoffs?
They were setting up a post-game date. Obviously. Okay my honest answer is I've watched the gifs/clip so many times (you know, like a sane person) and I think Matthew is most likely telling Leon to get on his side of the line, maybe saying something about how if he stayed on his side 'I wouldn't have to push you', and Leon's laughing at him because it's such a silly little thing that Matthew literally shoves him with his stick. Though looking at it again Leon is actually on his side of the line when Matthew skates up which is probably why Leon is like "really?" so maybe it's just two messy bitches who love being annoying finding any excuse to annoy each other. Watching the full clip, Leon is smiling/laughing well after Matthew backs off so whatever it was was probably more amusing than annoying.
9. What do you think Matthew meant when he said 'I can't answer that or he’ll get mad at me' in response to Leon's 'get off the ice' comment?
Oh the million dollar question. My best guess is since Matthew just finished saying that he does think Leon is a great player and he was looking forward to playing with him (and Connor), he probably just didn't want to say anything that could be taken as an insult or 'returning fire'. Like from a professionalism perspective, he wouldn't want to start anything by mistake. I would like to think he didn't take Leon's comment to heart anyways (even if he did skate off after scoring their goal together lol). Or maybe he genuinely thought if he said anything it would upset Leon because the media would almost surely make any back and forth between them into a bigger thing than it was, and rivalries aside Matthew does seem to be friendly and polite to everyone off-ice. I believe he respects Leon as a player, and maybe didn't want to create any negative impressions outside of the game.
Of course the gremlin in my brain likes to think Matthew was thinking 'oh hot german rival doesn't like me? he could fuck me about it if he wasn't a coward' but I imagine you can't say that on TV...
21. 2020 ASG or 2023 ASG? Which is superior?
Well, I mean... 2020 ASG is the sacred texts, isn't it? But I do love the appeal of the 2023 ASG because of the passage of time and the change in logistics for Matthew means the rivalries aren't really there anymore. And there's been some maturation all around. Plus all that time for shenanigans is warm, sunny Florida...
I think I'd still say 2020 ASG is superior, but I also tend to view them differently. Like 2020 is still mattdrai's 'enemies' arc (enemies who fuck??), while 2023 in my mind is more conducive to the 'lovers' part of their arc. 2020-2023 is the enemies-to-lovers arc to me, is what I'm saying. But the 2020 ASG is superior by proxy of the tension and the drama and the potential for angst.
25. Who would break up with whom? Who would be more heartbroken about it? How do they cope with the breakup?
Why would you make me think about this? I thought we were friends. Ugggh fine if I have to...
Pained as I am to admit it, I think Matthew would be more likely to break up with Leon. I just think Matthew is more capable of letting things go when he has to, even if it hurts. Break-up scenarios in my head usually go hand in hand with Matthew's move to Florida, and that need to kind of start over and reinvent himself, even if that means leaving everything behind, including Leon. But it would be the furthest thing from easy, and Matthew would not do it lightly. It's hard to say who would be more heartbroken: Leon is so deep in his emotions and loves with the entirety of his heart. I don't think it would hurt Matthew less, but I think Leon would struggle to compartmentalize those emotions more. As for how do they cope? They don't. At all. Drinking and cry sessions with friends and family I imagine. Maybe they don't talk for a bit until things have settled, but then maybe they do start talking again, slowly, testing the waters, trying to be 'just friends'. It's awkward, but it's better than nothing.
Of course in my head the separation never sticks. Screw your break-up I'm copping out and saying they get back together within 6-12 months. Enemies-to-friends-to-lovers-to-exes-to-lovers. HAHAHA
36. If Leon got traded to Florida and had to move in with Matthew, which one of them would learn how to cook and / or be good at it?
I still haven't figured out the answer and I started writing a fic about this exact scenario lol. Once again I'm leaning more towards Matthew for this one, mostly because it's his house and he is a 'I have to take care of people' kind of guy. Also I'm assuming Leon is still Mr. 'I could burn water' lol. But I'm sure once Matthew learns a thing or two (probably with the help of the team chefs and his parents, who definitely would come down to help him), he'll try and teach Leon a thing or two, and then they can cook together. It probably still won't be great but it'll be better than starving lol

Omg what is the public’s reaction to Matthew and Leon? Not only do they go public… but go public with a baby and married?! Did Leon just hide her pregnancy the whole time? Was it a total shock to everyone or were the tumblr girlies like yeaaapppp called it confirmed LOL
oh leon hid that thing lol she had a ""lower body injury"" for the summer/to start the season and then after the asg shows up and is like. hello. i mean the team knew but it was a very, well we're not talking about that lol.
when it does get revealed, well, not to be rude to the hockey tumblr girlies but are they really all that interested in heterosexuality 😂 matthew's busy having sexual tension with enemy goalies and distracts them. but in all honesty i think it's a thing where like, teammates know. close friends on other/former teams know. some reporters have guessed. people play the 2020 asg clips and are like what was THAT about. but sudden family reveal?????? oh hockey twitter is shooketh
