#28: I'm Not Losing You (S7E04)

A little angst in a ship never hurt nobody and I'm moved by their earnest desire to protect each other in this scene. Even more, I appreciate how much this scene beautifully illustrates Rick and Michonne's communication and importance to each other. It showed that even when Rick and Michonne aren't on the same page, they're still always on the same side...

I love that even before this scene there’s that moment of Rick seeing Michonne has returned back to ASZ and being willing to take the risk of asking Negan for a second to see her.

Scratch that - the first time he tells Negan, "give me a second." It wasn’t an ask. Which in its own quiet way is bold as hell with Negan. But Rick has to get to Michonne and make sure no guns are traced back to her, so even a psycho isn’t getting in his way.

It really does seem like Negan even has a brief moment of noticing that whatever Rick is wanting to do right now is regarding somebody important to him. 

So then the actual scene begins with Rick hustling over to her. I always like to think that has to be pretty surreal for Michonne that she just saw Rick in front of Negan and surrounded by all his saviors, and now here he is in front of her. To me, it helps show how much protecting her is a priority for him.

It's sweet how Rick immediately notices that Michonne sees him holding the bat so he steps back - almost like empathizing with how upsetting it is to see the weapon that killed their friends and what he might have done with the bat since it was bloodied.

And Rick says, "He had me hold it," and I just know from Michonne's expression that she wants to slice Negan right then and there for the torment he's put her husband through today. 

Rick says he needs the rifle and Michonne asks “what?” with a subtle expression as she realizes Rick knows all about the gun. The rifle has to do with her so of course he knows about it. Rick says he knows what’s in the bag and what she’s going out there to do, and she asks what she’s doing out there. And even in a disagreement, I love their Richonne tones because there's always something so tender about the way they speak to each other.

Rick answers her, cuz there’s no such thing as a rhetorical question with him and Michonne, which I love, and I like that he says a non-condemning and non-judgmental answer by saying she’s practicing. 

You can visibly see how pained Rick is over having to reveal that they now have to give up all their guns. Michonne knows how much this hurts their chances of fighting back so she passionately says, "We can’t." Rick explains that if she keeps it and they find it, someone dies.

And then I love that he makes it clear how much he loves her when he adamantly says, “I’m not losing you or Carl or anyone else.” He’s specific about her and Carl cuz they’re his immediate family. 

And Andy perfectly delivers every single line always but especially when he again declares he’s not losing anyone else. You can just feel how much he means that and how, in his own way, surrendering to Negan is his attempt to fight to keep the people he loves alive - with Carl, Judith, and Michonne being the priority. 

I also like how it's not "I don't want to lose you," it's "I'm not losing you..." Rick doesn't play about his wife and kids and so he's in this headspace of not letting losing them even be an option. And there's something so heartbreaking and heartwarming about how clearly scared Rick is at the idea of losing Michonne.

You can see Michonne immediately empathize with him as he vulnerably expresses this. A consistent thing in Richonne’s relationship is that when the other gives them their heart and opens up, they immediately feel for them and can allow themselves to see things the other's way which was evident here.

It’s something Rick and Michonne do again in this same episode during a beautiful honorable mention scene when Rick reveals to her that Judith isn’t his biological daughter, and Michonne agrees to try to approach this Negan reign Rick's way.

While talking in this shed, I will always smile hearing Rick say, "So I’m giving it to them. Are you gonna let me?” 😊  It’s that blend of him being like this is how it has to be…but also only with your permission. Cuz he knows at the end of the day, Michonne and what she wants have so much influence on him to the point that if she were to say no, he’d accept it and they’d make some new plan.

I’m telling you, no one else is getting this kind of response and question from Rick Grimes. He’d just demand the rifle from others, but he can’t with Michonne because this is who he wants to give the world to, so he already feels hurt that he even has to ask her to give something up. 

(Side note: I’ve previously seen some argue that Michonne is more into Rick than he’s into her and I’m always just like…where?? I’ve always wholeheartedly been of the mindset that so much of what makes Richonne the ultimate ship is because they both love each other so intensely, immensely, and equally. Like their love, respect, and desire for each other really is equal.  But if the conversation of 'whose more into who?' required an answer beyond "both" (and it really doesn’t)…it’s Rick lol. I’m just saying. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Like by the tiniest percent more if you have to pick. And I just say that because Rick has shown time and time again that he cannot turn off how whipped he is for Michonne ever. And when he’s in that Richonne bubble with her, that’s really all homeboy wants to be focused on. Michonne can try to acknowledge the tasks at hand a bit more, but Rick is often like looming wars, community division, or just anything else going on can all take a temporary backseat when he’s with her. “Stick around,” (6.15), “Just a few more days,” “We can take our time” (7.12), “Ok, but tomorrow” (9.01), “I can take the day…we can.” (9.03). For Rick, when it comes to Michonne, the world can wait. And we love to see it. 🤗 But again, the ultimate takeaway is Rick and Michonne are equally in love with each other. Without a doubt. Michonne loves, wants, and believes in Rick like no other and Rick loves, wants, and believes in Michonne like no other. And that’s part of why they are so loved by me. 😊)

So after Rick asks if she'll let him have the gun, Michonne stays quiet and you see Rick look at her, and it just feels like he knows if he doesn’t act fast he’s going to get lost in those pretty brown eyes and do whatever she wants lol.

This scene was just a very married moment and fitting for Rick's dynamic with Michonne. I love the way he says these lines and the way they’re facing each other by the end of the scene. It was great as the first Richonne dialogue of s7. (Side note: this scene also just further proves this is a beautiful-looking couple, y’all) 

And as we know, Rick pouring his heart out here and giving them this time to explain while making all those Saviors wait really does resonate with Michonne. And so she agrees as we see in the next scene where Rick gives the Saviors the rifle, and Michonne gives them a lovely death stare with an iconic deer drop that has Rick like - if I do nothing else, I'm getting my wife another deer lol.

What I’ve always most appreciated about this #28 scene is that it showed how even when Rick and Michonne disagree or are going through a tough circumstance, their deep love for each other is still so visible and takes precedence. This scene is a wonderful example of Richonne's unbreakable love amid adversity. They choose each other every time. 😌

Cloud knew sign language from an early age, learning with his mom because his speech was delayed due to neurodivergence (ND). He slips into it from time to time in front of his boyfriends, but is embarrassed about it because he'd get teased in the village.

Genesis is the first to realize it's sign language, and rallies everyone to learn it.

They all LOVE Sign, because most of them are ND (GSZC), and one of them just loves his boys (A).

Cloud being really embarrassed and mortified at first, but Gen sitting him down and having a heart to heart.

"Beloved, we do a version of this already on the battlefield, it's no trouble. I'm just delighted we finally know when you're saying something. I love hearing from you, in any language. I love this part of you so much. I think it will even help us as a group; especially Sephiroth, probably Zack too. Aww, cherished chocobo, don't cry, you're perfect the way you are."

Genesis holds his sniffling chocobo super tightly, sometimes kissing his nose, making quiet commentary about the movie until the sniffles turn into chuckles.

(((Gen uses "not wanting to overwhelm Cloud" as an excuse for not inviting the others over, and therefore as an excuse to invite them over for an additional viewing later so he can get moAR LOVELESS. Everyone else is ok with it because Genesis sneakily told them that this would really help Cloud. For the third viewing, he guilt trips ASZ by saying it's Cloud's new favorite movie because it makes him feel special, and then turning around and guilt tripping Cloud by saying it would help Sephiroth, and Genesis really loves holding Cloud like they do every time with this movie.)))

Cloud growing in confidence and eventually making any group he's in charge of learn the field signs super well, plus some extras, and his teams get assigned better missions because they're better at communicating, especially when stealth is needed. They're also always looking at each other, and pick up on bad things quicker because of it.

Random trooper Fred notices random trooper Allen being affected by a poison gas because he was checking in with Allen to make sure he wasn't saying anything, for example.

1122 Spoilers

Overall this was a decent TWD episode. 

The montage is for Negan. I am pretty sure Hilarie Burton Morgan being credited for an episode was due to the montage. 

Nice little eye f**k between Daryl and Carol in opening minutes.  

Team Family makes their plans to infiltrate ASZ and we get this incredible bit of dialogue from Daryl to Connie: “You, me...down shit tunnel.” 

This is where I lament the time that was completely wasted on the Reapers arc. A 9 episode arc that could have been completed in about 3 episodes honestly. I think my frustration is that by the time this rolled around...the end of the series had been announced and alterations/rewrites to the script could have been done. The CW arc could have had way more exposition and depth if we had not wasted time with the Reapers. 

I said that, so I could say this. I am just not that invested in Negan and Annie. Show me...don’t tell me. Same with Luke and Jules. That ominous cliffhanger with Oceanside and we basically are just told from Luke’s standpoint what happened there. (I’m glad Luke and Jules made it though). 

Ah the tunnel scene that had everyone worried was a big nothing burger. Connie and Daryl are friends and they are worried about rescuing their family. It was a nice moment actually, but the shipbaiting will mercifully end soon. (To be clear, the playlist furor was much ado about nothing)

Carol and Maggie have a lovely scene, that could have only occurred between the two of them. I definitely got Same Boat vibes when they find Hershel and let me tell you folks....absolutely NO hesitation on the part of Carol to end the life of the trooper who was threatening Hershel. 

Just prior to Hershel’s rescue, we see that the warden character has Kelly held at gunpoint and Daryl sneaks up behind him and mortally wounds him. Kelly and Connie get a sweet reunion. 

I loved the synchronicity of Daryl and Carol helping their family reunite with their loved ones. These scenes play right behind each other and I think that was definitely intentional. 

Another scene I liked and don’t hate me for it was Negan and Ezekiel. Ezekiel hasn’t forgotten or forgiven the havoc Negan wreaked back in the day. Negan is a family man now and Ezekiel does not seem ready for Negan to have that. We get a Benjamin mention and I am glad he wasn’t forgotten.  Negan gives it right back to him though and mind you I am looking at this through eyes of someone who adores Carol. Negan mentions that he isn’t gonna standby and not protect his family and although she wasn’t mentioned, I have to wonder if Negan had thoughts of Carol avenging Henry’s death while Ezekiel was not participatory in Carol’s revenge quest. (This is probably just me, but hey, I can’t help my thoughts). 

Eugene had a nice courtroom monologue and I must give credit to Laila Robbins for convincing me at how bad an actor Pamela is. For Kangaroo Court...we should always reference these courtroom scenes. 

I will say that I have never been one to say the news of spinoffs spoiled moments in the episode for me, but I will say the suspense of the final ten minutes was tempered by the fact that we know Negan moves on to NYC for his spinoff.  But a still very good and heartpounding TeamFamily scene. Rosita is so savage and I am here for it. 

Only 2 episodes left and still we await the promised heart to heart for Caryl. I am hopeful and hopeful we will know more about how Carol’s and Caryl’s story continues after the finale. But admittedly, there is not a lot of time left for this to be resolved. I still think we could get canon...the satisfaction of said canon remains to be seen though.

what do you think the richonne reunion will be like?

I think it will be hard fought. I trust that having DG and AL as EPs on the series will mean there will be a certain level of care given to the characters, Michonne in particular. DG is an excellent storyteller. Her influence in the writers room will be felt for sure.

I don't know if you watched The Walking Dead: World Beyond, but there was one moment in the series that was very ominous in regard to Rick's story arc. Jadis spoke about how she used a 'B' to get into the Civic Republic - Rick was the 'B'. And what the Civic Republic Military (CRM) was doing with 'Bs' was awful. Experimentation, basically.

I think a lot of the series will focus on his time in the Civic Republic. That place is not easy to escape from, damn near impossible, actually, so I fully understand now why he was gone for so long.

The thing about Rick is, he was one hundred percent an 'A'. That was hinted at throughout the entire series of The Walking Dead. I'm thinking, hopefully he'll be relegated to (read forced to be) part of the CRM. He'll see their reach and their power and I think that's what would have kept him there -- plus the threat to his family because Jadis knows where they live.

Rick is smart. He would have done what he could do, on his end, to protect his family. The CRM aren't the Saviors. They're an organised military force with reach and immense firepower. Rick had to be smart about his escape.

Now, in saying all of this, their reunion will be spectacular. I am hoping that it will be back at ASZ -- and that it won't be ten years later. That's too effing long.

I think Michonne will be out there searching. She will have to revert to how she used to be when she was alone. I personally feel like it's going to be part of her arc that borders on dangerous. Namely because she has had so much character development. Rick brought her back from the edge. What will it look like for her out there without him and their family to ground her? She is smart and capable. I hope they don't have her out there being angry. Remember her saying: 'Anger makes you stupid, stupid gets you killed.'

I would like to see her arc mirror that of Rick's in the beginning. Someone who is out there looking for their family. She knows he is alive. She knows he would have returned if he could. She has the feeling he was being held captive. She is functioning on hope alone. Hope is dangerous. It makes people do dangerous things, especially in their world.

I also want to see flashbacks with the both of them. Some beautiful domesticity laced between the brutality of the world they inherited. That's how I would tell the story. Hire me AMC lol

It’s me again sorry about that 🤣 but I had a thought and maybe this has already been mentioned to you. Max mentions in 11x23 about how Pamela did the same thing before with the walkers to clear the streets (I hope I heard that part right) and that got me thinking of 10x03 I believe it was when TF was fighting horde after horde of walkers and they all thought it was Alpha’s doing and even questioned Lydia about it. What if those hordes was actually Pamela’s doing? Of course they didn’t know about the Commonwealth then but who knew if they knew about ASZ, Hilltop and Oceanside.

Yeah for sure. My fellow theorists and I have discussed that episode from S10 at length. Because it was purposefully never explained.

For those who don't remember, TF was fighting off wave after wave of walkers coming for Alexandria's gates. No one slept well for like 44 hours because of it, and they assumed Alpha was behind it. A good assumption, honestly. But when Gamma came to their gates, she insisted that it wasn't the Whisperers sending the waves of walkers. Alpha would have absolutely no reason to lie about that. In fact, more in line with her serial killer-like personality, I would assume she would be proud of it and go out of her way to take credit.

So, you're saying maybe the CW was sending them.

It's possible, but honestly, I think the CW is too far away from Alexandria, and Pamela just isn't cool enough to have that kind of forethought. She definitely moved the walker around with purpose in order to serve her own aims, but that was within the limited area of the CW.

If anything, I think the CRM was sending the walkers. I think it was a hint at bigger things going on in the bigger world, beyond what the scope of the flagship show covered. And of course there were parallels to Pamela and the CW, as you've pointed out. But I think they also used the CW storyline to foreshadow the CRM, so both S10 and S11 were foreshadowing what will happen hereafter.

#21: Rules Keep Changing (S5E11)

This scene right here - so beautiful and also very telling. I love this heart-to-heart that shows how much they can reach each other. Scenes like this remind me that we really watched two characters so wholly fall in love with everything the other is. And not only fall in deep love, but deep respect, appreciation, and trust. They really saw each other, understood each other, and changed the game for each other. And of all their bonds in the show, Rick and Michonne were always the most emotionally vulnerable with each other too. The way they became each other’s best friend plays an important part in the way they became each other’s other half...

I love the staging of this scene with Grimes 2.0 staying by their car from a distance while team family fix the RV. Rick, Michonne, Carl, and Judith are so clearly a four-person family right here and now. Like Michonne is Rick’s best friend at this time, but she's his future wife too, make no mistake. And I just appreciate that when their group got bigger upon reuniting with the rest of tf in s5, Rick and Michonne still kept super close to each other.

I love that Michonne shares some wisdom with Rick. She tells him the fight is over, and it’s so vital that Rick has someone in his life like Michonne who sees him so clearly and can breathe life into him and remind him that while the fight keeps you warm and fed it can turn on you if you don’t learn to let it go.

Rick needed to hear that because, as we see, he still was in that Terminus train car mindset which was making him go a bit mad. It’s precious the way Michonne softly says she knows it’s hard cuz Rick needs someone to be this gentle, compassionate, and understanding with him. 

And the way that Rick, even in this PTSD state, really tries to hear her out. The best. Rick and Michonne always communicate from a place of vulnerability, leveling with each other and sharing their own experience to resonate and relate with the other. It’s a beautiful thing.

Michonne looks at him so sweetly in this scene. And when she says the fight turns on you - Rick will learn how true that is because not releasing the fight in ASZ leads to some messy situations.

Rick tells Michonne that the concept of letting go is similar to what Bob was trying to tell him back at the church. "What to risk. When it’s safe." Rick will always pull my heartstrings because, at the end of the day, he’s a family man who just wants to keep his family safe at all costs, and that can lead him to be on high alert, which is stressful. 

You can just feel how much he carries the weight of the world in this scene. But having Michonne here to offer a refreshing reminder that it’s okay to let go, shows he does not have to carry the weight alone. Rick and Michonne now have a true partner and someone they can be fully human with.  

And then y’all, it gets quite interesting when Rick says, “When to let someone in.” I’ve always liked that he says "someone" and not "people." It’s like Rick's been pondering a more intimate level of letting someone in. Even the way he pauses, it’s like he deep down knows that “let someone in” means something more personal than just letting strangers like Aaron into the group. And right now, he’s confiding this to someone he has let in and wants to let in even more. 

And again, Rick is the type of guy who seems to really value a soul-level connection, and he seems to be the type who wouldn’t act thoughtlessly when letting someone into his heart (unless suffering from extreme PTSD). Letting someone in would need to have a deeper meaningfulness for him, and I know that at this point, Rick is slowly but surely coming around to the fact that it’s the woman right here on this car with him that he most needs to let in.

Then Rick says, "The rules keep changing." And it made me think about how I've always felt that because Rick is such a dutiful guy, it seemed to be such a stirring rule change for him when he was so captivated by Michonne in their early days of meeting each other. I really think that was a part of Rick's s3 hostility with Michonne at times because he was shaken that he had this draw and attraction to her so soon after losing Lori when the "rules" would suggest he should just be grieving.

All that to say, rule changes aren’t always easy for him, but it’s sweet how he acknowledges they’re changing and is coming around to being more open to it.

And then Michonne just puts the ultimate cherry on top of the scene by saying, “It did for me.”

Now, y’all, watching this back rn um…I’m surprised Richonne didn't become official the very next episode. Like what? I’m sorry, but there was nothing platonic about this exchange...

The way she says that and smiles at him. The way he stays looking directly at her after and then stays quiet and looks away cuz you know he had some thoughts that weren't platonic. This was giving 'I’m in love with you' energy from both of them. Can’t tell me any different. 😌

I just need to take a moment to unpack what this could mean. R: The rules keep changing. M: It did for me. Like wow. I guess if I had to be completely un-Richonne-minded (which admittedly ain't easy) then Michonne could just mean, 'I never thought I’d learn to let go and let people in but the rules changed and I’ve took the risk to let all of you in and embrace team family as her family.'

Sure. But like come on, I feel it’s not pushing it too far to say that there’s an element of this being about the two of them specifically. Rick changed the rules for her and opened her heart up in a way she didn’t think would happen again, and Michonne absolutely did the same for Rick. There's an intentional reason this exchange is between the two of them and not anyone else from the group.

Plus, while I'm always unsure of exactly how much time has passed during any given season in TWD, I'd venture to say that this moment occurs less than two months before Richonne becomes canon so it feels like this scene does want to start setting up that these two are coming closer to fully realizing their feelings for each other.

This really felt like one of the closest Rick and Michonne ever came pre-canon to acknowledging the love they’ve developed for each other. It was a beautiful scene, and to this day when I hear their moment interrupted by that RV starting to work I’m just looking over at the RV like...

Lol just cuz I wanted Rick and Michonne to get to stay in this very telling private moment a little longer and elaborate. But I understand their precious slow burn had to continue its steadily rising flicker before the wildfire could truly ignite in season 6. So this scene instead concludes with Rick excusing himself. He says he needs a moment as Michonne watches him with this loving compassionate expression.

Rick then goes to hide weapons before they take the leap that Michonne motivated and go to ASZ. Rick hiding the weapons shows that he clearly still doesn't know if this Alexandria stuff is legit, but even still they pull up to those ASZ gates (oh we're gonna talk about it 😋) And why do they still pull up? Because Rick trusts Michonne. Even over his own hesitancies. Love it.

And I adore the lingering shot of Michonne watching Rick as he goes. It’s so evident that he means so much to her, and I love that she is the one who most gets to see Rick the human being. And Michonne is so equipped to love and support him in all his humanness, just as Rick is with her.

This scene is just gold and genuinely meaningful to Richonne and their soulmate connection if you ask me. Rick and Michonne changed each others' rules and each other's lives. Oh, and changed mine too. 😌👌🏽

What kind of father Roegner would be for Pavetta? Did Eist succeed in being a father figure for Pavetta?

see, this is what i struggle with. i have two very different visions of roegner in my head, and i myself am not sure which one i like more. one, is where roegner is an extremely caring, and extremely involved father, because he knows what he did promising her to duny. he knows their time with her is running out and he wants to make the best of it. and the other version, where he is absent and withdrawn, spends most of his time secretly looking for duny to kill him, or for a way to save pavetta from the terrible fate he accidentally sentenced her to. and, seeing as roegner is described by sapkowski himself in ASZ as introverted and quiet and measured, i would say that i like the second option more.

as for eist, i don't think, unfortunately, that he was able to become a father figure to pavetta. she is shy, withdrawn, quiet, and i think he with his big stature, loud booming voice and excentric nature would frighten her more than anything. but he tried his best! (as we see in question or price, where he pours her wine and attempts to entertain her with a conversation)

" a character being black doesn't exempt them from criticism" so that's what you got from me telling you that you don't empathize with a black woman who went through trauma? I don't care if you don't like her, some have taste and others don't and that's ok. But saying that you didn't like her attitude knowing that she went through one of the most horrific thing that happened to any character on the show is peak white behavior. Just because she's strong doesn't mean she can't be affected by PTSD and while traumatized she never put anyone In danger, and just decided to peotect her kids and community. She was nice enough to Magna's group, making sure they found community in Hilltop even after their leader hide multiple knives and tried to sneak in her house to kill her, she didn't owe them anything. Her and the council gave Hilltop what they could when they asked (mind you they were just raided by Jocelyn & co at that time) and she was ok to let Ezekiel and his peeps live in ASZ. Also it's extremely funny how nobody from the other communities tried to check on her and her mental health (considering she's always been the one who wanted to unite the communities ), but only wanted her community's stuff and thangs. Once again that's probably something you dgaf about cause ww....Anyway let me just block you so I can stop seeing your takes in Mich's tags.
