Atalaya Castle, is correctly and historically known simply as Atalaya, and was the winter home of industrialist and philanthropist Archer M. Huntington and his wife, the sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, located in Huntington Beach State Park near the Atlantic coast in Murrells Inlet, Georgetown County, South Carolina.

She falls in love with everyone that crosses her path; it is her nature to be drawn to that something that was always in someone, though at the heart of it all the same in everybody. Stirring in her the desire to hold, to possess and caress the men and women she sees.

When the world was new she would watch as young maidens sold their virtue in exchange for their freedom. The men who granted their coin were rewarded with a moment to make believe they were touching her, the goddess that granted their carnal needs, their spiritual desires.

Temples were erected in her name,in many names (though none truly hers). She was called the goddess of love, the goddess of lust, she was called desire. Around the world the temples changed, rituals varied, more names were granted. Ishtar A starts, Aphrodite. On the another side of the world the girls are tethered to her spiritually, the very meaning of their lives to worship her, keep her earthly home. Waiting for that moment for a warm body pressed against their flesh, to channel the goddess, to be the goddess.

Others avoid her name, admonish against her influence. Something inside all of us, our birthright, our curse. Meant to be kept locked away, never to be thought of, never to be touched, succubus. She is the Warning, the Downfall, the their of the forbidden fruit.

They are right about every story, every assumption. Though in truth none could fathom the story as a whole.

She is the watchtower, the veil between logic and delirium, reality and dream. She is built of stone rising high above the landscape, set with embellishments to tell the world “this is a holy building”.

She seeks frenzy while in the guise of a woman. From sacred rites to the most soul shattering crime, all perform any favor to be the one person that gives the Forbidden Touch.

When she calls, those who come do so willingly. Some turn her away, and she will return to them. Some will change their minds and follow, some will still have no cause to accept her as guide. Those who refuse her never understand the euphoria of the road for which her watchtower falls.

She waits forever, whether there is someone who believes in her or not. She exists forever, whether the temples stand or fall. There is one, or so she has been told, that can touch her flesh, hold her against their body. Fill her with the soul of what is real and what is dreamed. How long has she been waiting, how many has she lured to her side in hopes that her walls would crumble forever and she is not longer a fence, a/part from both sides….?

If asked she would tell you that it does not matter, offer to grant you your greatest desire. In her presence, woman or tower, she will always be the only one a mortal could ever wish for. She is every hope, every despair that is a part of our existence.

[ Atalaya & Brookgreen Gardens, Murrell’s Inlet, South Carolina — September 2022 ]  

Atalaya and Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark District encompassing two formerly-united properties associated with sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. It includes the nation's first formal sculpture garden, and one of the studios at which Huntington did her most productive work.

#so atalaya is actually not all that impressive - they clearly did not keep it up after anna left in the 1950s #but it DOES give the very clear impression of being very haunted. #it's all the faded whitewashing and the uneven floors and the occasional cupboard or tap left behind #brookgreen is way more fun; it's not just devoted to anna's sculptures anymore; it's a hodgepodge of different modern sculptors #in fact the national sculpture society finalists were on display when we went which was a cool way of showing the continuity #of people making figurative sculptures #.......also I'm pretty convinced that anna and archer huntington had a lavender marriage though I have no proof of it #except reading between the lines of some faded historical plaques #wherever there is light #the lesser american roadtrip
