what genres of music do you think the gaang would listen to? what about some of their favorite artists? i think katara would be a big olivia rodrigo fan and that aang would listen to a lot of taylor swift lol
aw come on now be nice to aang. he would have better taste than THAT. i think he would listen to a lot of disco, like donna summer. he would like upbeat funky music that you can dance to. and he’d have a pretty eclectic and varied music taste. like i see him also loving joanna newsom (and not just because divers is about his life). and maaayyybe he’d listen to taylor swift, like one or two songs perhaps, but his ass would NOT be a swiftie.
that said, katara would feel very passionately about her, although whether positively or negatively i do not know. but there is no way she is simply swift-neutral. she would care way too much about pop culture as a phenomenon. i think that even if she really did love taylor swift she’d always preface her name with “famous climate criminal…”
and look, i respect olivia rodrigo, i think she’s a talented performer and makes great songs for amvs (ty lee all american bitch kendall roy brutal nanami vampire, to name a few highlights), but if anything, katara would listen to actual 90s riot grrrl and female singer songwriters, because olivia is simply not as good as her inspirations.
katara would also listen to any music that has a subversive political message or is sung by a woman with eminently powerful vocals. so a combination of punk, folk, some gospel, some heavy metal, and a lot of r&b. also i think she’d listen to very specific shwotunes and defend those musicals with her life.
sokka doesn’t have a music “taste” he has one song that he plays on repeat for weeks until he gets sick of it. sometimes that song is a symphony by beethoven, and sometimes that song is “fireworks” by mitski (okay, it’s often “firework” by mitski). but his one constant is kate bush. he’s fucking obsessed with kate bush.
toph grew up a piano prodigy so she has a lot of opinions on classical music and that’s most of what she listens to for the first decade or so of her life. then she gets introduced to like, tracy chapman and fiona apple through katara and sokka, and realizes that classifying all music with lyrics as “trash” may have been a bit reductive. and when she gets a bit older she gets really into indie rock and begs sokka to take her to concerts. and he doesn’t even really care for the concerts. he just takes her because he knows how much she loves it.
zuko is a mitskigirl thru and thru. i know that ppl say he’d be emo and listen to mcr but that music is too coarse and unpolished for his sensitive ears. he likes music with a beautiful melancholy quality that makes him feel sad yet gorgeous. he also listens to jbrekkie and jay som and other musical equivalents to ocean vuong. he’s literally gaysian what do u want from him.
suki is by far the most into music of anyone in their friendgroup. music is one of her favorite things in the entire world, and if she couldn’t play and listen to music she wouldn’t even want to exist. she’s in an indie folk rock band with her friends called the kyoshi warriors, and they have a lot of followers on bandcamp. she has an incredibly varied and extensive music taste, which is why she’s basically always designated the aux cord. sometimes she’s playing the cranberries and sometimes she’s playing googoosh and sometimes she’s playing otyken. and her taste never misses.
ty lee is one of those freaks who doesn’t really listen to music by choice. instead, she listens to: true crime podcasts, audiobooks (eg, of lacanian psychoanalysis), or sometimes simply has her earbuds in with nothing actually playing so as to seem as if she isn’t eavesdropping on the conversations taking place in her vicinity. but when people ask her what kind of music she likes she just says, “oh, you know…. pop.”
mai is also a mitskigirl she’s even more of a mitskigirl than zuko is (so she claims, although zuko would contest this). she’s very active on spotify because she loves making various playlists for different moods, different vibes, different blorbos from her shows. she likes all different genres, and takes suki’s recommendations very seriously above all.
azula’s two favorite artists are, unfortunately, rachmaninoff and kanye, and that’s all you really need to know about her.

hello, since you did a mitski+gaang post, which mitski songs would you associate with yangchen, kavik and korrasami?
i should’ve done these in chronological order by album but I didn’t so please excuse the disjointedness. also this got kind of long so im putting it under a readmore…
“i’m your man” is SUCH a kavik & kalyaan and asami & hiroshi song. ugh
“bug like an angel” korra alone anthem
also “i don’t like my mind”
“when memories snow” is so yangchen and her past lives…
“the frost” kavik/yangchen breakup song (you’re my best friend, now i have no one to tell, of how i lost my best friend)
“I love me after you” asami & hiroshi and also korra & zaheer song (they’re king of all the land!!!)
“remember my name” is THEE ultimate korra song to me.
“me and my husband” is also an asami & hiroshi song. to me.
“a pearl” is such a yangchen and her past lives song….. (nobody told me it ended)
“why didn’t you stop me” the kavik/yangchen post-betrayal breakup anthem
“old friend” is a mako & korra & asami song…. reconciling with your ex moments
“come into the water” is so asami needing korra to make the first move…. (maybe i’m the same as all those men writing songs of all their dreaming…)
“liquid smooth” is also. you guessed it. an asami & hiroshi song.
as, of course, is “wife.”
“abbey” is another extremely existential korra song about legacy and identity
“brand new city” is asami’s internal monologue but she just never shows it
“pearl diver” is the ultimate chaisee song ever. i know you didn’t ask about her but like. this is THE chaisee song. if you even care
“real men” obviously another asami & hiroshi song. of course
“fireworks” is a korra song bc it’s literally the depression anthem of all time and, well.
“my body’s made of crushed little stars” is also a korra (alone) song. she’s not doing anything!
“a burning hill” is also an asami & hiroshi song. you might be thinking i’m insane at this point, but then i invite you to remember. that yasuko was literally killed by fire.
“goodbye my danish sweetheart” obviously a kavik/yangchen breakup song (kavik’s pov of course) i mean duh.
“strawberry blond” asami pining for korra moments…..
“class of 2013” another korra alone song and god what a song it is!
valentine, texas” is a yangchen/kavik song no i will not elaborate on that
“working for the knife” WOULD be an asami song if lok understood that capitalism is bad. and yet. alas.
“stay soft” is a yangchen & kavik & chaisee & kalyaan song. naturally.
“everyone” another korra alone song.
“heat lightning” another existential korra song.
“the only heartbreaker” another kavik/yangchen breakup song from kavik’s pov
“texas reznikoff” is sooo korrasami (but i’ve been everywhere and it’s not what i want… i wanna be still with you…)
“first love / late spring” is, again, an asami & hiroshi (and kavik & kalyaan) song
“francis forever” is a korrasami and yangvik pining from a distance anthem
“I don’t smoke” is soooo asami & hiroshi and kavik & kalyaan. sorry
“jobless monday” yet another korra alone anthem
“I will” is SOOO korrasami it’s like the korrasami thesis statement
“carry me out” yangchen & korra (and every avatar’s) existential crisis moments. also a perfect note to end on bc it’s my favorite mitski song <3

Have you ever listened to Light by Sleeping at Last? I've been listening to it on repeat becasue it gives so much Sokka and Katara vibes, too many Sokka feelings my heart couldn't handle.
Just... this dude just dedicated his life to protecting his sister and then later his little family. Why not think about him all day?
i listened to it and i actually got stronger aang&katara vibes upon a first listen (although their devotion is reciprocal, so it's a different dynamic) but i do get where you're coming from for sure. "with every heartbeat i have left / i'll defend your every breath" is extremely sokkacore. picturing a banger amv rn that transitions between all of them and various instances of their devotion mirrored thru the repetition of the lyrics. it would be so good if only u guys could peer into my brain to experience the vision bc i am not actually making that

Hi, hope you're well.
Idk if you've listened to the new mitski album, but I think it's such a sokka album. There are so many songs on the album that remind me of sokka or sokka and yue like:
heaven and star are such yuekka songs to me or rather yuekka from sokka's perspective where he is both remembering their time together and mourning her death and kinda brings up how her death has fundamentally shaped him forever.
I don't like my mind, the deal and when memories snow makes me think of how exhausting it is to be sokka. All of his many problems that he refuses to (can't) acknowledge and the guilt he feels for those rare times he thinks of not dealing with his many responsibilities.
And finally, I'm your man and I love me after you really make me think of how sokka puts so many people before himself that he is willing to die several times over if it meant the other person's safety. I'm your man especially makes me think of sokka's worship of his dad and how he can't acknowledge that while his father left for the right reasons, it still hurt sokka and katara in very different yet fundamental ways (your father leaving the safety of your sister and entire tribe to twelve year old you will do that).
But yeah it's a good album I think.
Sorry this ask is so long, I just wanted to know your thoughts on this new mitski album + the gaang and others?
yes!! was wondering if/when someone would ask me this lol. i agree that a lot of songs on the album have sokka vibes. i'll go through the album in bullet points (out of order) to elaborate on how i think they fit various characters as i have done with other albums in the past:
"my love mine all mine" is THEE sokka/yue song to me. like the denial of agency/personhood outside of their love which must be hidden and ignored for the sake of duty but cannot be denied!!! and the invocation of the moon is just so potent, of course. if i had time i would make an amv, quite frankly
"star" is such a sokka/yue song from yue's pov specifically she is literally the shining light "burning so you can keep looking up" normally i hate when people compare stars and moons as if they are interchangeable bodies (this is why i cannot enjoy sun & moon dichotomies in poetry i am an insufferable pedant when it comes to astronomy) but i will make an exception in this case because it is just such a beautiful song and really does fit so well.
"buffalo replaced" is such an aang song to me. like not just because of the obvious buffalo (or is it bison?) imagery, but because of the evocation of not being able to catch up to the destructive progress of imperialist nation-building (replacing buffalos with railways, etc.) while simultaneously contrasting it with the liberty and love and freedom of the individual (and that whole verse about how much she loves her cat, that is so real and also so aang) that is so poignant and devastating yet celebratory and warm. maybe that's just my interpretation, but it just feels so aang.
"the frost" is a katara song to me and not just, again, because the imagery is so obviously evocative. there's also some aang themes in the first verse, but the "you're my best friend / now i have no one to tell of how i lost my best friend" lyric really hits because it feels like an address to her mother, but also to sokka. obviously kya was the most important person in katara's life (i assume this is the case for all children with their mothers, i know it's still true for me), but she also lost sokka as a friend when he became her sworn protector. i think katara is grieving the relationship she had with sokka but has no way to communicate it because he's right there, so instead she communicates her grief over kya and rage at the fire nation for taking her family away from her, because it's far easier to verbalize than grief over someone having changed but in a way that seems imperceptible. she calls what sokka does "playing soldier" because the idea that it's just a game to him is far preferable to the chilling alternative that he is prepar[ed/ing] to die. she is losing him in increments and has no one to tell because everyone in her family has either died, left her, or left her emotionally. "it's just witness-less me."
"bug like angel" is a song quite specifically about addiction (alcoholism in particular) but the themes of guilt, regret, and longing do evoke aang and zuko (separately, not as a dynamic) to me. the desire for family, comfort, and for life to revert back to its "original" state before mistakes were made that irreparably altered it (a "sunlit garden" if you will)
"i'm your man" is a sokka song it is also an azula song also a zuko song maybe even an iroh song? it's a song about staking your identity in patriarchal logic especially wrt to one's own father (especially if that father happens to be the leader of a state). it's about the contradictions of patriarchy and selfhood under patriarchy and worshipping at the altar of masculinity even as subsuming its logic destroys you. (will expand on this matter whenever i finally find time to finish my sokka nanami essay. btw)
"i love me after you" is a song that could apply to any number of them but i think it's most poignant if you imagine it as an azula song ("king of all the land" is quite literal, in this case), but also like, a version of azula in the future. it's an azula song someday. eventually.
"when memories snow" is an azula song wrt the line "and if i break could i go on break" and the "thousand hands that clap for me in the dark" but the imagery of memories as snowfall also evokes the black snow that triggers sokka and katara and feels like a metonym for ptsd and trauma. for such a short song, it has a wide range of highly specific applications.
"the deal" can apply to so many characters, as it broadly follows mitski's pattern of existentialist songs such as "abbey" and "door" that can be applied to any range experiences concerning the human condition, BUT, i find it most evocative when considering iroh and his relationship to lu ten and to the spirit world. i'll expand on this more if asked, but for now. just think about it
"i don't like my mind" is such a zuko song especially book 1 zuko who is so obsessively focused on capturing the avatar because he refuses to consider the obvious implications of his situation and is in hardcore denial and avoidance of the blatant truth. he needs this job it is all he has..... please don't take my job from me......
"heaven" IS a sokka/yue song but it's also a sokka/suki song and a mai/ty lee song and really just a universally applicable love song and maybe the most beautiful song ever i dont know. "now i bend like the a willow thinking of you" makes me go crazy every time i hear/think about it probably because i am so othellopilled i think of desdemona and start crying and gnashing my teeth... anyway. on that note!
i'd be happy to expand on any of these, as i recognize that some of my claims were cursory and vague. thank you for asking this and indulging my ramblings :)

I listened to Billie eilish’s new song “what was I made for?” recently, and it reminded me a lot of your interpretation of Sokka. Especially the lyric “looked so alive, turns out I’m not real, just something you paid for”
The song also repeats “I don’t know how to feel” a lot, which reminds me a lot of sokka repressing his emotions.
Also even the main question of the song “what was I made for?” is very Sokka to me. Like it’s basically Sokka not feeling like a whole, real person outside of his perceived purpose of being Katara’s protector and coming to the realization throughout the series that she doesn’t need him to physically protect her and therefore causing him to question his purpose.
Anyways, this was king of pointless but just thought I’d share
wait this is so true. yet another point for the “sokka is barbie” camp! tfw u are exploited & repressed by gender roles, expected to perform a certain role so completely that u are dehumanized & depersonalized in the process to the point that u cannot conceive of ur own selfhood beyond the service u provide to others: teen pop stars 🤝 toys representing hyperfemininity as a consumer product 🤝 sokkas

really enjoyed ur post abt the gaang’s music tastes, literally spot on. anyway i was listening to tears for fears’ “raoul and the kings of spain” and was suddenly like ‘oh this song is about zuko’
thanks! i feel u bc when i listen to literally any song i picture a corresponding utena amv in my head. anyway yeah i can definitely see it (pertinent lyrics below the cut)
[Chorus]
When the seventh son of the seventh son
Comes along and breaks the chain
Raoul, Raoul, Raoul and the kings of Spain
Making it plain, making it sane
To turn this loss into a gain
[Verse 1]
Did you know your father was an island?
Did you know your mother was the sea?
Can we ever hope to seek asylum
From the bounds of fate and family?
[Verse 2]
Did you know all mothers come from heaven?
Did you know all fathers come from hell?
That is why they're at sixes and sevens
That is why their marriage isn't well
Not well

I know you’ve answered the question if the atla characters would like rina sawayama before, but how about if there are songs of hers that fit them or ones they’d relate to?
i don't rly listen to her music (i mostly like her mvs bc her visuals are usually excellent, but i don't usually like pop) so this is more assorted thoughts than anything super coherent
"cherry" is a mailee song of course
"akaska sad" is a zuko in 3a returning to the fire nation mood
u know "XS" is that fn industrialization serve
p sure i've said this before but obv "dynasty" is a huge zuko song
"commes des garcons" is a v azula & toph song. their internalized misogyny slay (also i think abt this shiv vid all the time)
"forgiveness" is such a katara in "the southern raiders" song omg
"imagining" is thee mood for zuko's sanity spiral the whole time he's questioning good/bad (throughout the whole show basically)
"frankenstein" is obviously an azula song. enough said
"to be alive" is a sokka song. iykyk
"flavour of the month" is giving ty lee. willing objectification bc it resembles (the illusion of) control while simultaneously acerbically acknowledging how hollow it truly is!
i know "minor feelings" is obv quite literally a response to cathy park hong's book but it is giving mai tbqh
"chosen family" yeah that's the gaang <3

which instruments
I feel like I’ve answered this before at least once, but I always enjoy talking about music, so why not answer it again
aang: is good enough at ukelele that he can entertain with it, is pretty good at the harp, a maestro on the triangle, and loves to shred on the tsungi horn
katara: well, she can play “creep” on the guitar and “chopsticks” on the piano..... it’s okay though she has a lovely singing voice
sokka: can play nearly anything on the piano by ear, but doesn’t consider this impressive, because so can toph, and she’s better. also doesn’t realize that having a talent for jazz improvisation is considered difficult bc it comes so intuitively to him
toph: also plays piano beautifully by ear, but unlike sokka, spent hours every day practicing at the behest of her mother. but ultimately she enjoys playing drums for suki’s band far more than she ever liked playing piano
zuko: burned out tsungi horn prodigy. I like to think that aang gets him back into it eventually
suki: guitar, bass, also weirdly really good at the accordion. also the only one of them who can successfully write music (both irt composition and lyrics). her band slaps fyi
azula: burned out violin prodigy who refuses to admit that she’s burned out, but every time she so much as hears a violin she inexplicably breaks out in hives
mai: just good enough at the flute that her parents don’t get on her case about it. she fucking hates it though
ty lee: secret piccolo prodigy. only busts out this skill when it’s least expected
