Aziraphale: I want a proper apology.
Crowley: No.
Aziraphale: With the little dance.
Crowley: I don't do the dance.
Aziraphale: I did the "I was wrong" dance in 1650, in 1793, 1941…
Crowley: Fine! [doing the apology dance:] You were right, you were right, I was wrong, you were right. Okay?
Aziraphale: Very nice.

I was working on some of my Fanfic just now, when something hit me that stopped me right in my tracks.
I think, maybe, we've all got it wrong.
We (the fandom, the viewers, et al) have gotten something fundamentally WRONG about something that seems a silly little throwaway, but may be extremely important, but for a reason utterly different than we assume.
We've been calling it "the apology dance."
Canonically, it's NOT. It's not an apology. Azi makes a comment of wanting a "real apology. With the little dance." Yes. But then he specifically calls it "the 'I was wrong' dance." And when Crowley does the dance, at no point during it does he say "I'm sorry." He says "You were right. I was wrong. You were right."
It's NOT the same thing. Especially when you factor in the references Azi makes to the times HE did the dance. Now, we have no idea what happened in 1650, because we haven't been shown that, yet. But in both 1793 and 1941, the only thing Azi did that he would need to say he was in the wrong for was putting himself in danger.
Yes, folks, I'm going on record to say I firmly believe the only time Crowley insists on Azi doing the dance is when he puts himself in REAL, mortal danger. And seeing as both cases we KNOW of were unintentional/beyond his control (unintentionally in 1793 because he didn't stop to think about what he was doing, and outside his control in 1941, because he wouldn't have been in danger if Furfur hadn't been there).
This also opens a whole other discussion about when Azi demands the dance of Crowley. We can safely assume he's NEVER asked it of him, based on Crowley's reaction to the suggestion of it on screen. "I don't do the dance." Meaning "that's your thing, not mine. I've never done that." Also, in the context of what I mentioned above "that's for putting yourself in danger, and I didn't do that."
The subtext, however, based on what WE, and Crowley, know (Azi doesn't, at this point), and I now believe is the reason he does, in the end, actually DO the dance, is because to Crowley, that dance is associated with Azi being in danger (self-initiated danger in the referenced situations), and in this one case, Crowley storming out and refusing to help did, in actual fact, leave Azi to face a very REAL danger alone, and uninformed he's even IN danger. And THAT is what drives Crowley to actually do the dance (not the subtle pressure Azi applies, by listing those other times he was the one to do it... Those just incidentally serve as a reminder to Crowley of the reason the dance exists).
It's not an apology. At least, not like we've been reading it all this time, because it looks like a silly little "I fucked up" thing. It's a very real, very serious reminder to them both of the fact that they're putting something very important at risk when they don't stop to think about the consequences. Azi asks (okay, demands) it of Crowley because at this point they're pretty much on their own, and if Crowley refuses to stay and work with him, then Crowley will put himself in danger because he won't turn to Azi if he needs help as long as there's this rift between them. And Crowley does the dance as a reminder to himself that he nearly left the one person it would destroy him to lose alone to face a threat Azi doesn't even know exists.
I don't know about you, but I won't be viewing that scene the same, next time through.

"I want a proper apology."
The dramatic “apology dance”
In the entirety of Season 2, I think the “apology dance” scene is pretty close to my favorite.
The way Crowley walks in like he’s entering a stage in a packed theater.
The way Azi clearly sees him coming and fusses himself up to look extra focused on his work and not at all excited about Crowley’s return.
Tumblr media
Crowley, noticing that Azi has yet to look at him, ramps up the drama by:
Whipping off his glasses (taking off his armor)
Response from Azi? Clears his throat and focuses harder on his work.
Tumblr media
Time for Level 2 Drama, it seems.
Stalking over to the table (no sauntering here)
Tossing the glasses down (looks casual but absolutely isn’t)
Ringing that little bell (like a ceremonial gong signaling “this is fucking happening”)
Walking back into the rotunda where he has maximum visibility (also maximum vulnerability)
Azi now has no choice but to react, which he does by slowly looking up and over at Crowley, who looks like the human-shaped embodiment of dread.
Tumblr media
Finally announcing “I’m back” like the bitchy customer who just yesterday had declared they were never shopping here again
I mean, wow. Amazing. Glorious.
Not to be outcunted, Azi just casually turns back to his work and practically hums, “Yes. I can see that.”
Damn, Aziraphale, did you take lessons in passive aggression from my mother?
Tumblr media
Now Crowley groans in a way that I felt to my core and asks, “Do you want a big, ‘I think I said the wrong thing,’ sort of an apology, or can we take that as said?”
He averts his eyes until the last second because this probably feels more demeaning than begging Azi not to do his magic act at Warlock’s birthday part.
Tumblr media
Still turned away, Azi replies in a tone that is a mix of hurt and guilt that makes me think this has been coming for awhile. "I'd like the apology actually." I bet you would, Angel.
Tumblr media
Back to Crowley, he pauses to assess his options, takes a deep breath, and says the magic words: “You were right.” Also looks like he almost says something else but either doesn’t know what to say or doesn’t want to say it.
Tumblr media
Oh wow, so convincing. Bravo.
Finally, Azi puts down his glasses and his work and turns to address Crowley. He is not happy.
“Not good enough. I want a proper apology.” Also, side note, but Michael Sheen’s voice here is just…yum.
Tumblr media
Before Azi can finish, Crowley is so quick to reject this idea. “No.” with a shake of the head.
Tumblr media
You're not winning this battle, Crowley, and you know it.
“With the little dance.” Azi’s voice perks up and his eyes brighten at the hope this will happen. Seize that opportunity!
Tumblr media
Again, Crowley barely let’s the word “dance” come out before he tries to shut it down. “I don’t do the dance.” Nope, no sir, not this demon.
Tumblr media
Oh no, now Azi’s anger joins the hurt and guilt for a vicious trifecta. “I did the ‘I was wrong’ dance in 1650, 1793, 1941…” each date being spat out with increasing amounts of venom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh Crowley, you brought this on yourself, girl.
This non-apology combined with his “I'm sorry. I apologize. Whatever I said, I didn’t mean it. Work with me, I’m apologizing here. Yes? Good. Get in the car.” and I can see why Azi reacts to this the way he does.
Tumblr media
Crowley knows he’s beaten and concedes with a “Fine!” that feels the very opposite of the word.
Tumblr media
Okay so before the “proper apology” can begin, Azi gets up from his chair, straightens his waistcoat, and stands with his hands grasped in front of him like a proper gentleman. A properly petty gentleman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then the main attraction! Crowley, looking completely stone-faced, does “the little dance.”
Tumblr media
It’s wonderful. He looks so silly and childish and graceful and mature. And god, that deep knee bend at the end? Amazing.
Tumblr media
Also amazing is Crowley’s face when he says "Kay?” while bobbing his head and eyebrows back like a sassy rooster? *chef’s kiss*
Tumblr media
For Azi’s part, god it is just a delicious mix of polite poker face and barely concealed thirst. I see your eyes scanning Crowley, drinking in that thin, dark Duke. That little dance will live in his head forever.
Tumblr media
And that’s the signal to go back to normal! Crowley regains control and Azi falls back into the supporting role.
Long-term relationships are hard, yo.

Throughout both seasons of Good Omens, I adore watching how Aziraphale and Crowley show their love for each other. They each have a different set of needs that the other knows about and validates... Crowley is big on giving Aziraphale Acts of Service. Aziraphale leans more towards Physical Touch.
But one thing that they both give the other is possibly the most important for our two man shaped beings... Words of Affirmation.
It's easy to see when Crowley does this for Aziraphale, and I think it's quite easy to see when Azi both needs those words and also how dramatically he responds to them.
Tumblr media
He doesn't just enjoy Crowley praising him... he needs it. Heaven has been brutal to Aziraphale. They have never had a kind word for him... instead they belittle him and mock him at every turn.
Tumblr media
Imagine that THIS is what you are given for thousands and thousands of years. No matter what you say, no matter what you do, THIS is the response. Nothing is ever good enough. EVER.
And then, you meet a demon. And he listens to your ideas. He sees you for who you are. And he never mocks you. He listens. He accepts you. And he tells you that you're doing good things, that you're smart, that you're clever. That you have value.
Tumblr media
Look at that face!!! Look how much it means to him! Even with six thousand years together, Aziraphale is ready to be mocked, and when Crowley encourages him, it is everything!
Even waaaaay back, in the Garden. They hardly knew each other, and yet already we have this affirmation that Aziraphale desperately needs.
Tumblr media
What might be more difficult to see is how Aziraphale gives Crowley Words of Affirmation that HE needs just as much. It's much more subtle, but Crowley needs them, and Aziraphale provides.
Crowley's entire existence is a delicate balancing act. Inside, he is at heart a good person. He didn't lose that in his Fall like many of the other demons. We can see his kindness in a thousand small ways... his concern for children, his love of Aziraphale, following Hell only as far as he can... But imagine. He's a demon of Hell. Surrounded by people who think words like kind, nice, love are "four letter words." And the punishment for that kindness is not just mockery, but it's physical, brutal. How easy would it be to lose those parts of yourself just out of pure survival?
And then, you meet an angel. And he sees you for who you are, deep down, all the little things that you had to hide away. And he says it out loud, so you know that he sees it and accepts it and appreciates it. And he helps keep those parts of you you cherish alive.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale is the only person that validates those parts of Crowley. And even if Crowley reacts negatively to it either out of fear that they're being listened to or even just habit, he still hears it.
Tumblr media
Okay, he reacts REALLY badly to it... but Aziraphale never stops saying it, either. He knows deep down just how much Crowley needs him to say it.
Kind, nice, these are the most common of Aziraphale's Words of Affirmation... but there is one that I think Crowley needs the most... the one that he himself brings up the least... the fear that as a demon he is truly unforgiveable. He is unreliable when describing his Fall through out the series, and I see that as a sign that it is something that eats away at him. No demon gets forgiven. Period.
But Aziraphale forgives him. Offers it to him over and over. (Ignore the final offer of forgiveness in S2... those circumstances are out of the ordinary).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And when Aziraphale offers his forgiveness, I don't think that he's limiting it to whatever the surface reason is. Look at him... that's the face of someone who is trying to put as much meaning behind his words as he can. To reach that core of self-doubt that Crowley hides away, and ease the ache that is there. "You can be forgiven. You are worth forgiving. I forgive you, even if no one else does." We see throughout the series the forgiveness that Aziraphale offers start off pretty broad, and moves more and more intimate... from "May God forgive you" to "May you be forgiven" to finally "I forgive you." He refines his words until he finds what Crowley needs.
For both of them, the Words of Affirmation that the other provides is such an important part of their relationship! I'm thinking that soon I'll take a look at some of the other Love Languages that they use throughout the series. Until then!

Finally We're Going to Talk About Crowley
I really do love them equally but you wouldn't know it from my posting history because I constantly feel the need to ride to Aziraphale's defense every other week.
Anyway we talk incessantly about Aziraphale's behavior in the last scenes of season two for obvious reasons, but I think Crowley also needs some deconstructing. His behavior is less shocking; he appears to be reacting to Aziraphale more than taking the reins of the narrative himself. But there are a few key moments I want to look at more closely.
The first thing I thought of was how nonchalant he appeared to be about his only friend going off to have a private conversation with a powerful angel who clearly loathes the sight of him. "Go ahead, the day can't get any weirder" YES IT CAN YES IT CAN but anyway, I was deeply mistaken.
The second they're out of sight he jumps to his feet and stares out the window after them, then he starts to pace around the bookshop. He stops dead when he sees Muriel and goes back to nonchalant mode. "They'll be back soon."
(In the tone, imo, of a parent waiting for their kid to come back from a date and it's past curfew and they're not answering their cell.)
And then--he immediately tries to get rid of Muriel. Who doesn't want to leave, bc "The Metatron might need me!" And you can see the "oh my sweet summer child" expression cross Crowley's face. He's still his usual casual demonic No Fucks Given self on the outside, but he doubles down on getting Muriel out of the shop.
I don't want to spit in anyone's crepes with this next bit, but I don't think the "us time" portion of this conversation was intended to be romantic. I hypothesize that Crowley had just about made up his mind to have an honest conversation with Aziraphale about his Fall and whatever tf he's got going on with the Metabitch. And the "extremely alcoholic breakfast" was what he needed to get through the conversation.
I'm wandering into the realm of speculation at this point, but I think my hypotheses are based on canon events. Crowley does not talk about his Fall with Aziraphale and discourages any mention of his angel identity. That could just be a trauma response, but you don't see the same reticence when it comes up in conversation with Beelz or Muriel or even Jim. I think he's been protecting Aziraphale from something all this time, maybe for his own safety or maybe because he doesn't want Azi to lose faith in heaven/God. The way he tries to send Muriel away makes me think it's a physical safety thing.
But then Metacunt shows up in the flesh and Crowley goes, Yeah it's time to have The Talk.
So then what changed?
This next extrapolation is a bit tenuous so feel free to disagree, but I don't think Crowley was as lost in the woods as he seemed to be. Crowley is impulsive and emotional, but he's not stupid. My friend leaves with the most dangerous angel I know and comes back acting weird. We are not getting that breakfast at the Ritz, are we?
I think the confession and the kiss were sincere, but I also think they had a purpose. I think he was trying to snap Aziraphale out of whatever was making him act like a marionette on crack. But, "It's too late. It's always too late."

Hi there! Do you know of any fics where aziraphale is a human and Crowley is still a demon? Or the other way around where Crowley is human and aziraphale is still an angel
Hello! We have #human aziraphale and #human crowley tags you'll want to check for more fics like this. Here are a couple more of each to add to the collections...
Call my name and I’ll be there by cole90210 (G)
Aziraphale is a human with a bookshop and an unfortunate habit of reading out loud from occult books he is repairing. When the demon Crowley answers the summons, it will be a battle of wills, temptations and an unlikely friendship (that leads to more).
out of touch, out of time (out of my head when you're not around) by popcornizuku (T)
"Uh, are you a demon?” His face crumbles, clearly distraught by the implication, and Crowley winces. He shakes his head vehemently, “Oh, Heavens no. Quite the opposite, really.” Before Crowley can question whatever that means, he raises a brow, considering, “Were you attempting to summon a demon? I don’t believe that would be a very wise course of action. Awful company, demons are. They have never been known for their manners, I can assure you.” “Er, right. I’ll take your word for it… Wait, no, I wasn’t trying to summon a demon!” (Or, Crowley accidentally summons an angel, attempts to find his soulmate, fights some demons, and falls in love.)
Azi and the Demon by tiresius (E)
He stared at Azi appraisingly. “So. You have agreed to come here, of your own free will? To live with me, as my… companion?” Azi nodded. He supposed that was true. “Hmm.” Crowley’s tongue appeared briefly between his lips. It was very red. “Tell me, Azi. Have you ever met a demon before?” A Good Omens fairy tale, loosely based on the original story of Beauty and the Beast.
Who wants to live forever? by jessescreations (NR)
Antony Colby is a young man living in London, who is suddenly plagued by nightmares of fires, angels and demons. In search for simple answers he discovers big errors in his life - trying to make sense of things, he comes in contact with a bookshop owner who seems to know more than he wants to admit and the longer the search goes the larger the pile of questions grows - in the end of it all Antony Colby has to make a choice or Crowley is punished with a mortal life and does not remember the past 6000 years.
Guiding Light by aurora_beam, LTRisBACK (G)
The Principality Aziraphale has been in Heaven for most of the 6000 years that Earth has existed for. Now, he is summoned by the Archangels and given a very specific mission - to guide Antony J. Crowley, Lawyer, and keep him from falling from his path. No one (except maybe the one giving the orders, whose plans are ineffable) expected them to fall in love...
Among the Stacks by MeinirRhos (NR)
Nearly a year after Aziraphale returns to Heaven, he vanishes from existence, leaving Crowley bereft on Earth. Just when the demon has finally started to heal and move on with his life, he finds his angel by chance in a library. But Aziraphale has no memory of his life as an angel, or of Crowley. How will our hero cope?

Crowley X Reader: To love and be loved
Tumblr media
This is purely self indulgente
Warnings: fluff, heartbreak, happy ending
Word count:1,8K
He’s not used to this feeling. He knows what it is, well at least he thinks he does, but he’s still not accustomed to it.
Love is weird.
Crowley had always thought that and this situation just seemed to prove it. He loved Aziraphale. It had taken him eons to admit it to himself but he knew it was true. But as much as he loved Aziraphale he also loved you. A demon in love with an angel and a human. It’s funny how life works. He still hadn’t told you how he felt. His heart was still recovering from Azi’s rejection. But despite the heartbreak he knew you’d be much more open to his  love than Aziraphale had been. You’d stuck around, after all. Which was more than he could say for the Angel. Crowley could still feel the warmth of your body as you stood beside him that day as you both watched Aziraphale leave. He missed the feeling of having you near. You’d tried to reach him but he was making it absurdly hard for you. Crowley wanted to be alone and at the same time he wanted someone to hold him.
Was this how humans felt after a breakup? Odd little creatures.
It took some time but Crowley finally caved. He drove over to your apartment, parking the Bentley somewhere safe before going to knock at your door. He turned to look at the street as he waited for you to open the door, his eyes catching on the bookshop on the other side. It wasn’t your fault you lived right in front of it. It was why you’d ended up meeting the two of them in the first place. It finally hit Crowley why he’d put this off for so long. As much as he wanted to see you he couldn’t deal with the thought of coming back here and finding the bookshop empty.
Crowley didn’t hear you unlock the door. He didn’t hear it screech open either. You glanced at the Demons characteristic red locks, your heart nearly jumping out of your chest at the sight. You went to place your hand on Crowley's shoulders, stopping for a moment as you realized just what he was staring at. You moved closer to him, your arms wrapping around his neck as you leaned your head on his shoulder. Crowley moved his head to the side, his nose bumping against your cheek. He closed his eyes, taking in your familiar scent. He loved when you hugged him like this.
“Long time no see.”
“Sorry about that dove.”
“It’s okay. You’re here now.”
Crowley hummed against your skin as you gave a kiss to his shoulder blade, despite his coat he felt the pressure of your lips against his skin. You were always so affectionate with him. It had taken him a while to get used to it but now he couldn’t see himself living without your caresses.
“Wanna come inside?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll make some coffee.”
Crowley sat on your armchair, his legs slung on top of your coffee table as he watched you move around in the kitchen. You hummed as you worked making the Demon smile. He rose from his seat moving over to your record collection. He skimmed through the vinyls searching for the right one. Once he’d found it he went over to your record player, placing the disc in before turning the machine on. Your head turned to face him as you heard “Good Old-fashioned lover boy” begin to play. You smiled at Crowley, watching as he moved over to you.
“Queen huh?”
“Heard you humming it.”
“Ah I see.”
You placed the rag you had been holding on the counter. Crowley watched you sway your body to the rhythm cautiously for a moment before starting to dance without hesitation. He grinned at you his head bopping to the beat. You stuck your hand out to him walking backwards into the living room.  He gave you a dubious glance, silently asking what you were doing.
“Well, aren’t you going to dance with me?”
“Oh I don't dance.”
“Bullshit.”
Crowley looked at you, his eyes moving over your features sadly. Before the memories could get him down he gave you his hand.
“Oh what the hell.”
You laughed as Crowley spun you around. The two of you moved around the living room, each one dancing in their own weird way. Everyonce in a while you'd bump into each other causing you to have a fit of laughter. Neither of you thought anything of it when your skin grazed the other, you were used to having close contact with each other. And then something changed. You bumped into Crowley for what felt like the hundredth time but this time instead of nudging him with your limps you managed to collide into his body, causing his arms to wrap around you.
“Careful dove.”
“Sorry.”
You raised your head, eyes falling on Crowley's yellow orbs. You hadn't noticed he’d taken off his glasses. Your hand found its way to his cheek, one finger tracinging over the mark near his ear. The Demon stared down at you observing the way your eyelids fluttered lightly as you caressed him, your lips parted in a way that allowed him to feel your breath against his skin. He could feel your heartbeat against his chest, the steady thrum soothing him. You didn’t break eye contact, allowing Crowley's eyes to lure you in. The Demon started to become self conscious causing him to lower his gaze. You called out his name placing a finger under his chin. He raised his head to look at you. He looked so scared. You’d rarely seen him look so uncertain of himself.
“You’re very pretty, you know that?”
You weren’t really sure why you’d said that. It had just come out. Crowley's brows creased as he looked at you. Here you were holding him in your arms in the middle of your living room and telling him he looked pretty. He wasn’t used to this kind of treatment. He didn’t really know how to react. You moved your head up slightly, eyes shifting back and forth as you inched your face closer to Crowleys. When the Demon didn’t move away from you in anger you decided to go for it. Your lips grazed Crowleys as you laid a gentle kiss to his mouth. You opened your eyes, pulling away. Your gaze fell on Crowley's shocked expression, your own eyes widening as you realized what you’d just done.
“Oh shit. Crowley, I'm so sorry.”
You backed away unlatching yourself from Crowley as you stumbled backwards. You put your hands over your face covering it in embarrassment.
“Fuck.”
Letting out an angry groan you forced yourself to look at Crowley. He still had the same expression plastered on his face. You bit your lip as you tried to formulate the right thing to say.
“Crowley listen i’m really-”
He was sick of hearing you say sorry. He was sick of the way you avoided his gaze. He needed to feel you again. Needed to have you close to him. With two long strides the Demon had made his way over to you, one of his hands gripping onto your hip as the other wound itself in your hair. Crowley shoved his lips against yours, hungrily devouring the gasp that left your mouth. You clung onto Crowley's jacket in desperation. He kissed you in a bruising manner, hands trying to hold onto whatever of you he could reach. His hands were cold against your skin, something you’d become used to over the years. In your despair you and Crowley had managed to make your way to the other side of the living room. Your ass bumped into the record player causing the needle to scratch against the vinyl in a grating noise. The sound made you and Crowley cover your ears, hands detaching from each other. The Demon let out a frustrated groan moving to lift the needle.
“I’ll get you a new one.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
Crowley set the needle back down on the disc in a random spot. A small sigh left the Demon's lips as “Somebody to love” started playing. You noticed the way Crowley's body sagged a bit causing you to frown.
“Crowley here let me change-”
“Listen.”
The Demon's hand held onto your wrist, stopping you from switching the track that was playing. You didn’t understand why he wanted to keep listening to this song. After everything that had happened in the past few weeks you would have thought that a love song was the last thing he would want to hear. Crowley's fingers trailed up your arm making you look at his face. You watched as he observed the way his fingers moved over your skin. He was thinking about something. Really thinking about it. You wondered what exactly could make the line between his brows appear so predominant.  You placed your hand over Crowley’s causing him to look at you. You smiled at the Demon beginning to nod your head to the beat of the song.
“Find me somebody to love. Come on Crowley sing it with me.”
“Find me somebody to love.”
“There you go.”
You sang the words together. While you sang with your whole heart Crowley sang with a bit more hesitancy. You didn’t hold it against him though. He'd been through a lot. Even if the words were part of lyrics they still held a deeper meaning. You knew that. Maybe that was what made you sing with such passion. Maybe it’s what made you keep your eyes focused on Crowley's face as you sang. Because it meant something. And you wanted him to know that.
“Can anybody find me somebody to…..love.”
“Already did.”
“Oh Crowley. Azi’s a fool he’s a big-”
“I’m not talking about the Angel.”
Your brows creased in confusion. Crowley loved Aziraphale. You’d known if from the moment you’d laid eyes on them. So if he wasn’t talking about him who could he be-oh oh. Crowley moved closer to you, placing his hand on your chin. You gazed up at him, eyes moving back and forth as your brain struggled to compute what this meant. The Demon leaned his head down slightly. He was going to take it slow this time. Give you time to push him away if that’s what you wanted. He wouldn’t fuck up again. He knew better now. Crowley called out your name. You realized you hadn’t said anything for a while. You cursed yourself for reacting so slowly.  You’d forgotten that Crowley had developed trust issues because of Aziraphale. He wasn’t going to be the one to make the final move. He couldn’t handle another heartbreak so he was leaving it up to you to decide what happened next.
“Crowley…”
The Demon prepared himself to pull away from you. He’d already begun to back away when you let out a breathy whisper.
“I love you too.”
He wasn’t sure he’d heard you correctly. His mind had a way of playing games with him recently. But then your lips were on his and your hands were winding around his neck and he just knew. He knew this was real. You were real. You loved him. And that was more than enough.

It really saddens me to see Aziraphale get the full force of everyone’s contempt over his reaction to the kiss & here's why:
Tumblr media
What do we know about Aziraphale's true character? What they we been shown? Well, he’s a silly angel, who cares too much, loves his partner Crowley and truly wants to do what he believes is the right thing!
Don't get me wrong, I can see why a lot of people side and identify with Crowley after the final fifteen, given his trauma and the fact that he was the one making himself vulnerable by initiating the kiss.
But here the thing: it’s not like Aziraphale acted out of character after hearing Crowley’s proposal. We, as the audience, have been shown multiple times when Crowley has begged for them to run away together and every time we’ve seen it, it has been in a situation where Crowley wants to abandon all responsibility. It’s a trauma response and I don’t blame Crowley for being traumatized by Heaven and Hell. Just like I don’t blame him for not wanting to go back to either.
But Aziraphale has never responded positively to this proposition before. The only difference this time was the kiss. A beautiful, desperate, awkward kiss!
Aziraphale has always been wired to take responsibility and direct action even when he shouldn’t. For him, Azi’s personal code is to always do what he believes is the right thing to do, even if it might not end well. He gives the flaming sword to humanity, he saves Job’s children, he discorporates himself to stop the apocalypse, he does the thing with the halo.
I just don’t buy the narrative that he chose Heaven over Crowley. I think Aziraphale chose Heaven *because* of Crowley. He knew as long as he was in charge, he could keep Crowley safe.
Tumblr media
Azi clearly loves Crowley despite his cognitive dissonance at all times. He can talk all the livelong day about how they "aren’t friends," but his actions speak the opposite. He cares deeply for Crowley. Azi trusts Crowley, he lets him get “plenty of use” out of the bookshop, he turns a neighborhood association meeting into a cotillion ball so that he can dance with him, he risked an eternity in Hell by wearing Crowley’s face.
He also knows that Crowley always comes back especially his angel needs him. Unless Crowley does a 180 and returns to Hell to actively thwart Heaven out of spite (which ngl that would great television & a theory I’d like to dwell deeper into elsewhere) this was just another disagreement and they will work it out somehow by working together. And hopefully learn how to communicate clearly!
The very root of the argument was misunderstanding and failure of communication on both sides.
The more I think about the “I forgive you” line, the more I think it may have just been Azi’s gut reaction to read the kiss as one of Crowley’s “temptations.” It’s a loaded word, but I think most people read the kiss as a last act of desperation to convince him to run away. In the past, we have seen Azi’s automatic response to what he feels like is a temptation from Crowley has always been to “forgive” him.
Is it irritating? Yes. Is it good communication? No. Is it a trauma response? I think yes.
I think that’s why the ending of season 2 didn’t upset me as much as it has upset others. I feel like I understand both sides—both how and why Crowley and Aziraphale make their decisions—because the writing is so damn good.
*Aziraphale did not reject or abandon Crowley.*
That last look at Crowley before stepping into the elevator was not a “good bye” or a “fuck you.” I truly believe he looked back to remind himself why he’s doing what he’s doing in the first place!!!
Aziraphale is protecting Crowley because he loves Crowley and believes their relationship is not only worth making sacrifices for, but also strong enough to withstand them!

Hiii! Can I please request a Crowley x reader x Aziraphale where Crowley and Aziraphale fought about something stupid (though they would claim that it was very serious) and they keep complaining to the reader about it. Reader is usually patient but they finally explode and get mad, forcing Azi and Crowley to talk. Instead of getting offended, the two make up because they both agree reader is hot when they’re mad. Thank you!
Tumblr media
I set this one as TLTDATSIB-verse because it fit!💕
Crowley x reader x Aziraphale
Tumblr media
God, it gets your goat when the two of them bicker. It’s usually about something daft but they’re both so stubborn. Neither wants to be the one to apologise. They might be from totally opposite places but they are so similar sometimes.
You walk into the bookshop and they’re doing a marvellous job of pointedly ignoring each other. Crowley is set up at the window peering out at passers-by, and Aziraphale has an open book at his desk. He’s not reading it. And they both absolutely pretend not to notice the other one when you walk in.
“Morning, nightingale,” Crowley calls, and at the same time Aziraphale chirps a “hello darling!”
They both swap glances for a moment, then turn away. They might as well be crossing their arms over their chests and pouting.
You slam your bag down on the floor and it makes them both jump, but it definitely gets their attention.
“Right. This stops now.”
“I don’t know—” begins Aziraphale, but you hold a hand up to silence him. He does so immediately.
“Follow me. Both of you.”
Reluctantly your husbands both get up out of their chairs and shuffle along behind you. You lead them into the bookshop’s break room and point to the sofa. It’s a loveseat, so they have to sit snug side-by-side. You let them stew for a moment as you fill up the kettle and start it boiling, pour it when it’s done, then spin round to face them with an expression like thunder.
“I don’t care why you’re arguing. I don’t. But I’m telling you you’re making up today, now. Because I can’t do this anymore. I can’t have the two of you icing each other out every time I step into the shop. Do you know how annoying it is, you making sure you show the other one is in your bad books?! I know that’s exactly what’s happening. If you weren’t both doing this to be performative, you wouldn’t even be here, Crowley!”
Crowley opens his mouth to object but realises you’re right, so shuts it with a click. They both shift uncomfortably. They hate to admit that they’re wrong but usually, you’re the one who is right.
For two immortals they’re both so human sometimes.
“So,” you say, letting the tea steep before fishing the bags out with a little angel-winged teaspoon, “I’m going to make you sit here. And you’re talking it out. Because if you don’t I am not going to let you leave this room ever. And don’t test me because I’ll find a way.”
You press the tea into their hands: milky with loads of sugar for Aziraphale, black and strong for Crowley.
“Understood?”
They both nod.
“Alright. Well. Good.”
You pick up your own tea and leave.
For a moment they sit in silence.
Aziraphale speaks first.
“I’m not sure if it’s just me, but that was a bit…”
“Sexy?” Crowley states, simply. Aziraphale runs a finger under his collar and swallows.
“We should talk.”
“Alright,” relents Crowley, and turns to his husband for the first time since they began to quibble about which one of them really was at the signing of the Magna Carta.

You reblogged that one post a while ago that said crowley loves mischief but only the kind of mischief that doesn't hurt people and what he actually wants is to be kind and that azi loves kindness and being kind but that he wants to be be free to be selfish sometimes and i think it captures it.
There is no good one and no bad one because they're both good. They have flaws but not bad flaws. They care, they're selfless, they're kind, and they want to do the right thing. Neither of them would ever want to hurt or harm anyone, not the other and not humans or whoever. The hurt sometimes caused like in the final 15 isn't caused by intention or hurt pride or whatever but because they care so much about the other, because they want the other to be safe and happy. The key here isn't that either of them is bad but the miscommunication and azi's refusal to let go of heaven and heal (everything you listed in response to the first nonny). The intentions towards each other and in general are and have always been good. That's what makes it so tragic yet beautiful.
Mhhhhmh I am making a very undecided noise right now.
Neither of them is bad OR good. No one is, and that's part of the point—the entire dichotomy from start to finish is nothing but a purely imaginary construct that has no factual basis. Angels aren't good, demons aren't bad, that divide is arbitrary and subjective.
If you were to ask Michael or Uriel if they're good they'd tell you yes, they are, and they believe it. They're angels, of course they're good! To them, morality is not decided by actions, there are two options and you don't get to choose.
To quote NG and TP:
Tumblr media
Everyone is fundamentally people, including every single angel and demon, which makes Crowley just Crowley and Aziraphale just Aziraphale.
They can choose to be kind, they can choose to harm people, they can choose to protect—everyone has the capacity for both 'good' and 'bad' actions, and no one will always do only one kind.
Crowley does find fun in hurting people, e.g. the paintball scene, and while his moral compass is more down to earth (pun intended) than Aziraphale's he isn't a saint. He is never intentionally cruel, sure, but he also doesn't intervene e.g. when Morag is dying, he still scares Job's kids, he kills a duck (then brings it back for Aziraphale), and he has no qualms doing his little hypnotizing act if it makes a situation more convenient for him.
Aziraphale, boy, Aziraphale is in some aspects worse than Crowley. The way he talks about poor people alone is horrific, he hoards books and actively scares and manipulates people to keep them away, he uses humans like PUPPETS during the ball, he tells Wee Morag Elspeth will go to hell with a smile on his face. His morality is equally complex and makes him just Aziraphale.
Not good or bad. Just themselves. They do kind acts and nice acts, harmful acts and selfish ones, and so on and on.
Side note: Aziraphale doesn't actually care that much about individual humans but rather humanity tm as a group, while Crowley does actively care about the occasional single human and is more personal in his interactions with him.

It's pretty easy to hate on an angel RN so let's shake things up and talk about how CROWLEY enables Aziraphale's repression.
Most of the flashbacks put Aziraphales burgeoning cognitive dissonance on centerfold- with Crowley acting as the voice of reason. To Aziraphale, he represents a slippery slope; the personification of Temptation and Hard Questions and Grey Morals, but those things aren't actually character flaws on his part, as the show reminds us over and over. His actual flaws are more subtle, but very much still present.
Frankly, Crowleys worst flaw is stated plainly by Aziraphale; that he enables naivety in order to keep his angel safe. Put another way, swooping in to "save" him.
It's hard to blame him because, well, they could both die otherwise most of the time. But when Crowley saves the day with Job's kids and the Laudanum, he's also stopping Aziraphale from reaching his own solutions (and conclusions). The fact Aziraphale has managed to avoid any kind of punishment is, in fact, a detriment adding to his indoctrination under Heaven. Put simply: for Azi, it always works out. So why worry? Crowley, on the other hand, isn't so lucky- he gets punished for the Laundanum incident (which I hope we get more detail on btw) and in general suffers a lot for protecting Aziraphale.
You see this pattern repeat in smaller interactions, too. Crowley does all the work re-wording things to make them more palatable to Aziraphale. Crowley always returns to apologize after a storm-out. Etc.
((Side tangent: This is another reason I think the Blitz continuation is so interesting. For once you see a bit of a role reversal- Crowley INITIALLY saves him from the Nazis, but it's Aziraphale who saves them both from Furfur. Its one of the first and only times you see them communicating more effectively- so it's NO COINCIDENCE that this is also when Aziraphale seems to unclench his ass a little.))
During the Bookshop fight, Aziraphale waits for Crowley to save them to everybodys detriment. He endangers Maggie and Nina, and ends up having to use the halo as a desperate last resort. Again we see Aziraphale avoid implementing a solution (and thus avoid facing the consequences) until the last moment, hoping Crowley will do it for him. In the end, Nina nails them both on the head, right? They don't talk, and they really should.
All of this to be a stubborn Aziraphale defender, so here's my point:
Aziraphale looks completely shaken during Crowleys confession because it IS the first time he's hearing some of these things. Sure, Crowley has said some variety of "Heaven sucks" a million times, but Aziraphale always heard it to the tune of a jealous guy who has been kicked out for bad behavior. Their situations don't seem the same to Aziraphale because in his LIVED reality, they arent.
Hell, even their "exile" isnt the same- Aziraphale keeps the bookshop and is allowed to keep helping people. Crowley loses everything and continues to be hounded by Shax. To Azi, Heaven and Hell are moral opposites, not parallels, and Crowley has never really argued otherwise until now.
Crowley, of course, bails him out every time because he wants to spare his angel the Heartbreak that destroyed him. You can't blame him- and snapping under all the pressure is only logical too. But you also can't blame Aziraphale for being upset when 6,000 years of Crowleys obscura comes tumbling down around them.

On my post about what Aziraphale meant by "I forgive you", @rebloggyssia replied:
I love this interpretation! It was a really sad moment to witness so I had problems to analyze the scene. But after reading your post I did rewatch it and Azi was really angry for a moment like you said. So my question is: why? Was he upset about Crowley not sharing is point of view, their miscommunication or something else?
I touched on this briefly in one of the many reblog threads of this post, but I have some more to say (don't I always?)
Earlier, I said that I think Aziraphale is angry that Crowley loves him, but not enough to follow him. That's the proximal reason.
But to be honest, I'm not even sure if he's really angry with Crowley. I think more than anything he's just fucking furious about this whole unbearable, hopeless, endless situation they're in. It's been six thousand years. They survived the end of the world. They're as free and together as they've ever been and they still can't talk about it. Whatever changed after Armageddon, it wasn't enough, and here they are again fighting for their lives. They can't go on like this.
So he offers a solution that he hopes will protect them both and Crowley rejects it out of hand. And like, of course he's angry about that, but I still maintain that whatever miscommunication is going on between them, fundamentally they know each other. Maybe better than two beings on Earth or anywhere else ever have. Deep down, I think he knew Crowley would never do this. And so he's angry, too, that he has this offer Crowley can't accept, and it's an offer he can't turn down.
That's the whole problem, isn't it? Angel and demon are sides in a war, they're deeply ingrained identities, but they're also choices. It's a bad choice between ruthlessly enforced control with the illusion of peace and unpredictable violence with the illusion of freedom, but it's the choice they have. Pick your poison.
The fact that Aziraphale and Crowley have never had this conversation - what if we could be on the same side? - says pretty plainly that they know where they stand. Arguably, Crowley returning to Heaven never felt like an actual possibility and so Aziraphale always assumed that if he could, he would. I think this is really one of those places where Aziraphale's cognitive dissonance is working overtime to accommodate his conflicting beliefs. Heaven is Good and there's something fundamentally wrong with anyone who would reject it. Crowley is the best person Aziraphale kows, and he rejects Heaven. Aziraphale reconciles this by doubting Crowley's rejection is genuine, but he also never has to test it if it isn't really on the table. He never asks Crowley and it isn't because he takes it for granted. It's because he doesn't want to hear that he's wrong.
So Aziraphale doesn't know what to do with Crowley's refusal, and maybe he really is surprised by it. Crowley usually does cave in the end. But I think he realised this would be a hard sell. If we're taking the fight at face value, that's how I would explain his anxious behaviour when he starts the conversation. He's making a proposition he knows Crowley is going to hate. He's nervous about Crowley's reaction, and his performance of excitement is his own version of a temptation: see how happy we can be, if you'll only say yes?
Aziraphale has thousands of years worth of repressed doubt and longing and Heaven is offering him the chance to set right all the things he knows to be wrong. He wouldn't have to live with this schism in his heart between faith and love. Whatever mistakes Heaven made are mistakes he can fix. And then Crowley says: no, angel, you can't fix this.
This is the brilliance of the Metatron's manipulation. For thousands of years, Aziraphale has been torn between Heaven and Crowley. I'm being unforgivably reductive about the ideals Aziraphale is struggling to reconcile, but on some level, it really is that simple. Aziraphale loves Heaven, Aziraphale loves Crowley, and he cannot have both. Heaven shows Aziraphale over and over that he can't have both. Meanwhile Crowley swans around giving Aziraphale excuses to flip Heaven off behind the archangels' backs, working beside him to do the good that Heaven won't, and never, ever making him choose. Crowley might have Opinions about Heaven's priorities and Aziraphale might privately agree but Crowley will never make him say it. He'll never ask Aziraphale to reject Heaven as Heaven demands he reject Crowley. Heaven gives black and white ultimatums and Crowley shows him how to live in the grey.
And then Heaven says he can have both. Aziraphale doesn't have to choose, he can have Heaven, and Crowley, and the power to fix the problems he always railed against besides. It's the perfect move, because if Heaven says yes, it forces Crowley to be the one to say no. And to make sure he does, Heaven includes a condition that Aziraphale can live with and Crowley absolutely cannot.
This is why Aziraphale is angry. All of it. It's a 6000 year running clusterfuck of impossible choices and every time he thinks he sees a way out it gets snatched away. He's had four years of freedom with Crowley and it still wasn't enough for them to even talk about what's really between them, and now Heaven is back knocking on their door. He's repressed all of his anger towards Heaven because it was never safe to express it, and then Heaven pulls a neat little trick to make all of it Crowley's fault instead, and dangles everything he wants right in front of him while knowing it'll stay out of reach. Even if he sees right through that, he's completely powerless to change it. So he's angry with Crowley, and Heaven, and himself, and for this one intense moment, anger he couldn't show becomes anger he can't hold back.

Good Omens Aziraphale's Sad Bastard Breakup Playlist
After the breakup, Aziraphale has a new job in heaven, having taken Gabriel’s vacant position. Aziraphale is haunted by sad music reminding him of his time with Crowley. The songs are dramatic, tragic, melancholic, angry, wistful, romantic, and sentimental. How does he listen to music at his new job in the head office? Are material objects allowed? Does he keep a secret stash of tea, cake, and records and a phonograph player in his office? Does he have a celestial radio that can tune in Earth radio stations? Does he sneak off to Earth to hang out in record shops and bookstores? Or more dramatically and emotionally torturously, does he remember every note, every nuance, every feeling, of every song and replay them in his mind? He's stuffing his face with angel food cake and tea while crying and listening to sad bastard songs and hiding from Michael and the Metatron.
See note after list on song selection process.
Songs include:
“Lacrimosa” – Mozart, Requiem in D Minor, Vienna Mozart Orchestra
“Commendatore” – Mozart, Don Giovanni, Amadeus film soundtrack
“Ja, tot katoramu vnimala” – Rubenstein, The Demon, Nicolai Ghiaurov
“D’amour l’ardente flemme” – Berlioz, The Damnation of Faust, Maria Callas
“Liebestod” – Wagner, Tristan and Isolde, Waltraud Meier
“Ach ich fuhls” – Mozart, The Magic Flute, Gundula Janowitz
“Thy hand, Belinda … When I am laid in earth” – Purcell, Dido and Aeneas, Janet Baker
“E lucevan la stelle” – Puccini, Tosca, Placido Domingo
“Celeste Aidia” – Verdi, Aida, Mario Lanza
“Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen” Mahler, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
“Der Wanderer” – Schubert, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
“Love is a Plaintive Song” – Gilbert and Sullivan, Patience, D’Oyly Carte Opera Company
“I am a Courtier Grave and Serious” – Gilbert and Sullivan, The Gondoliers, D’Oyly Carte Opera Company
“The Gentleman is a Dope” – Rodgers and Hammerstein, Allegro, Blossom Dearie
“A Hymn to Him” – Lerner and Lowe, My Fair Lady, Rex Harrison
“Could I Leave You?” – Sondheim, Follies, Alexis Smith
“We Do Not Belong Together” – Sondheim, Sunday in the Park with George, Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin
“On My Own” – Schonberg, Les Misérables, Frances Ruffelle
“As Long as He Needs Me” – Bert, Oliver, Judy Garland
“Stranger in Paradise” – Wright and Forest, Kismet, Richard Kiley and Doretta Morrow
“A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” – Sherwin and Maschwitz, Vera Lynn
“Night and Day” – Porter, The Gay Divorcee, Ella Fitzgerald
“I’ve Got You Under My Skin” – Porter, Born to Dance, Shirley Bassey
“Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” – Rodgers and Heart, Pal Joey, Sarah Vaughan
“They Can’t Take That Away From Me” – Gershwin, Shall We Dance, Fred Astaire
“Mon Deu” – Dumont and Vaucaire, Edith Piaf
“Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” – Dumont and Vaucaire, Edith Piaf
P.S.: Aziraphale likes Les Mis because it reminds him of that time Crowley rescued him from the Bastille. Don't tell anyone. It's a big secret.
P.P.S.: “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” reminds him of the time he and Crowley got drunk in the backroom at the bookshop the day the anti-Christ was delivered to Earth. Basically, this song reminds him of every time they went out for drinks or stayed in and drank.
P.P.P.S.: “I am a Courtier Grave and Serious” was the song Aziraphale planned to play when trying to tempt Crowley into learning the gavotte. It reminds him of the ball in the bookstore when he finally danced with Crowley.
P.P.P.P.S.: “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” is as close as Aziraphale can get to telling the world and Crowley to eff off. He has no more effs to give. Or at least he’s trying to convince himself he no longer gives a f***. He’s going off to his new job at the head office and Do Good.
Note on song selection:
I selected songs that thematically fit with the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley. I think the songs tell a story of Aziraphale’s struggle to reconcile his conflicted motivations. They reflect Aziraphale’s fears and desires. He fears being hauled off to hell for disobedience. He fears Crowley’s death and being alone in the world. He desires to be emotionally intimate with Crowley. (Dare he risk physical intimacy with Crowley?) He feels self-righteously indignant, but he’s soft and squishy and weepy and misses his best friend.
I don’t have much knowledge of opera or musical theater, but I have some experience with choir and solo performance. I did a lot of research into opera, art songs, musicals, showtunes, and standards to create a playlist on YouTube. Selections were based on availability, popularity, and sound quality. My big question was whether or not Aziraphale is a strict originalist or if he likes different versions of songs. In some places, I chose newer versions over original versions due to the sound quality of the recordings. I tried to keep selections accessible to a wide audience with varying degrees of musical knowledge. You may not like my choices, so your mileage may vary. You can make your own playlist.
You can listen to it on YouTube.

"What the hell did you just do?"
Part 2 of whatever. Continuing on with Tadfield Manor scenes, we get to the infamous "Wall" scene. I know it has been analyzed by many so far, but that's never stopped people in the world of literary analysis from spewing their own thoughts on well-reviewed texts. Also, I just want to.
Okay, so once they enter the manor building and see the management training branding, Crowley decides to "help out" and make all of the paintball guns into real machine guns. He snaps his fingers and points double finger guns at the passing "soldier".
Tumblr media
Aziraphale is dumbfounded. "What the hell did you just do?
Such language, Angel! And no physical reaction to it like Crowley did when he said "Heaven's sake" in E6. Huh.
Crowley, meanwhile, is thoroughly pleased with himself. They want to battle? He's happy to oblige.
This plus the scare in the courtyard lets us see Crowley enjoying the few perks of being a demon. It's fucking adorable.
Aziraphale cannot comprehend how Crowley - who just miracled a stain away on his coat because it bothered him - could do something so thoroughly evil. And with a jaunty step!
If Aziraphale had pearls, he'd be clutching them so hard.
To which Crowley takes the opportunity to once again point out the flawed binary system of morality. We the audience will see this argument again in the Body Snatcher minisode, so it's fun to see how these two keep having the same old debates throughout time just with different causes with which to start from.
Tumblr media
Pointing out hypocrisy while slinking down a hall? Crowley, you delicious tramp.
Aziraphale is still thoroughly horrified, but Crowley concedes with a sigh that everyone will, in fact, be fine. To me, his tone is a mix of disappointment at him not being quite as much of a bastard as he paints himself. He can't really hide his true self from Aziraphale.
Tumblr media
I love how he can't stop moving his body. Snakes gonna slither.
Then here is it. The big moment. Smug little Aziraphale feels the need to mention how nice Crowley is underneath his demonic persona.
Tumblr media
We now know that this is a reoccurring exchange, where Crowley must defend his title of Big Bad Demon in front of Azi's kind compliments. There's serious consequences to Crowley being labeled "nice" and Azi knows this by now. So why does he keep bringing it up? To provoke Crowley? To finally break him into admitting Azi is right? It's not like Azi can protect Crowley from Hell's wrath, but he pushes anyway.
I thought Crowley was the shit-stirrer in this relationship.
And now my favorite part. Sister Mary shows up and rightly implies these two are about to nail each other through the drywall. But when she recognizes Crowley, he stops her in her tracks.
The sass! It's off the fucking chart! Only an Angel could withstand such a display!
Aziraphale just straightens his clothes and lets the sass go unchallenged because he's still has a bit of self-preservation instincts left.
So I already talked about the "Luck of the devil" line from Aziraphale here, but it truly is a fun moment in the context of the whole scene. Crowley is worked up from the "nice" comment and Aziraphale's seeming refusal to stop analyzing him.
Tumblr media
Horny Aziraphale is sassy and Crowley looks like he wants to bite through a door frame.
So, obviously, I've spent way too much time rewatching these scenes, but I do find it so interesting how we see so much of their relationship on display within just a few minutes. The different personality traits to draw them together while also pushing them apart.
The way Aziraphale knows how to work Crowley, who in turns knows how to indulge appropriately. (*cough* bullet catch *cough*)
The way Crowley happily taps into his demonic toolbox to spread a bit of chaos without actually causing serious harm. (*cough* Job *cough*)
The way Aziraphale reflexively tows the party line of Heaven even in the face of Crowley's demonstrations of humanity's instincts. (*cough* all of time *cough*)
And basically the way they bring out the best (and sometimes worst) of each other. Some might say they're a team. Or a group. A group of the two of them.

when Lucifer rebelled against God, there was a WAR. And when Lucifer's side lost this war, they were cast down a million light-years right into a burning lake of boiling sulfur as a PUNISHMENT, where parts of them - angelic parts - were TAKEN (burned away) from them. NOT with their consent.
Now obviously the whole experience changed Crowley, he learned things he could never and should never unlearn and you can never go home again yada yada yada, but he did not on his own realize that he was a different person and changed his environment accordingly. It HAPPENED to him. It was FORCED on him.
"I never asked to be a demon. I was just minding my own business one day and then, looky here, it’s Lucifer and the guys, they say, hey, Crowley, my man, we’re just on our way to discuss the whole job conditions and career advancement thing, so, okay, the food hadn’t been that good lately, I’d got nothing on for the rest of that afternoon, next thing I know I’m doing a million-light-year freestyle dive into a pool of boiling sulphur."
and
"I only ever asked questions. That's all it took to be a demon in the old days."
There are LOADS of amazing queer references and parallels and metaphors in Good Omens, especially from UK history, but this is not one of them.
Crowley did not transition. His angelic name is not his deadname. And while I found the jokes "Aziraphale accidentally asked his boyfriend to detransition" funny at first, that is not actually what happened.
Should he have gone back with Azi to Heaven? Obviously not, he knows too much to ever be as naive optimistic and pure-hearted as someone like Aziraphale (or sheepishly obedient and indifferent as the other angels) now. Should he take back his angelic name? No, he has definitely outgrown it. But does he have a RIGHT to it? Does he deserve its reinstatement to be offered just to throw it back into God's face? Does he deserve his angelic self to be remembered and the injustices he suffered to be acknowledged? Hell yeah.
That said, Crowley DOES HAVE a deadname, though.
"'They just said, Get up there and make some trouble,' said the serpent, whose name was Crawley, although he was thinking of changing it now. Crawley, he'd decided, was not him."
//rant over.

You know what I would like to see in the S3 flashbacks? Azi doing some kind of temptation or something that Crowley was supposed to do. As far as Crowley and miracle is just another walk in the park, I can't grasp my head around Azi doing temptation. Not that, I think he doesn't have the guts. He does. I bet he's pretty amazing at this actually, but how he manages to do it, quoting Crowley: "looking like that?" He's like an epitome of an angel, when it comes to his look. Does he change how he looks? Puts on a wing or just changes his clothes? I need to know, because it drives me insane. Though, if anyone can mange something like that with this face it's Azirphale.
