Do you ever find a song that makes you feel so unbelievably happy and comfortable and just giddy but also at the same time makes you want to scream and cry and peel every inch of skin off your body????

Album time. So forgot to blog yesterday, and that was Smile by Brian Wilson. Very unsurprisingly given who it's by, it sounds like a lost Beach Boys album. I've listened to Pet Sounds, widely considered The Beach Boys opus, and gotta say I enjoyed this way more. If the phrase "it's basically a Beach Boys album" sparks joy with you, you should listen. 4/5.
Today we have The Hour of Bewildebeast by Badly Drawn Boy. So just first off, that's a fucking great album title and a great band name. A+ guys, no notes. Nailed it. The music? It's alright. I was expecting with the goofy names something light that's maybe a little bit punk, but that's not really what you get here. It's mostly quiet acoustic stuff, but not completely edgeless. It's the "ceramic cutter your workplace gave you because a safety razor blade is somehow 'too dangerous'" of folk rock. It demonstrably gets the job done, it has an edge, but you wouldn't really call it "sharp." I know that sounds harsh, so I'd like to be clear I do like this album. Like a 3.5 that I'm not sure which side of the fence to fall on. I guess I'm inclined to be nice. 4/5.

BADLY DRAWN BOY – ST LUKES 29 MARCH 2023
Ok, full disclosure. Badly Drawn Boy (or Damon Gough as he was christened) has been one of my favourite musicians for a very long time. I’ve travelled the 3 hours to Manchester to see Damon more times that I care to remember so it’s always a treat when he plays in Glasgow, even on a Wednesday night.
He’s been releasing records and entertaining the masses for 25 years and this tour was to celebrate this impressive milestone. He has a back catalogue of 9 studio albums, which includes a couple of soundtracks and his set tonight saw a great mix of tunes from the debut Twisted Nerve eps to the latest album, ‘Banana Skin Shoes’, which was released just as the world went into lock down in 2020.
Damon is a complex character. Rarely will you see a more talented musician and songwriter, but he’s a perfectionist and seems to doubt himself and lacks confidence. He’s almost an accidental rock star but I’m glad we have him and we’re not letting him go anytime soon. He is one of the most honest musicians and bears his soul every time he plays live and it was no surprise when he confessed that his original plan was to be a bedroom musician and never play live but I’m glad he was duped into playing that first gig all those years ago.
I’d seen him twice in the last 6 months before tonight and both gigs had been fantastic, and tonight was no different. He has a hard-core fan base that adore him and there was plenty of love in the room tonight. Glasgow gigs are always great but there was talk in the car on the way home of a road trip down south in September and on this form, I hope that won’t be the last.
4 stars.

Former Smiths Bassist Andy Rourke Dies at 59
- “My mate was one of those rare people that absolutely no one doesn’t like,” Johnny Marr says
Andy Rourke, former bassist for the Smiths, has died.
The musician died May 19 “after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer,” per a statement on his social media pages.
“Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans,” the statement said.
Rourke was 59.
“May Andy Rourke rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.
Billy Bragg eulogized Rourke as “a lovely guy and an amazing bass player;” Simon Raymonde remembered him as “a fellow bassist of fine pedigree.”
Rourke played with the Smiths throughout their 1982-’87 run. He was also a member of Freebass and D.A.R.K. and recorded with former Smiths frontman Morrissey, Sinead O’Connor and the Pretenders and toured with Badly Drawn Boy.
His final appearance was in September 2022 with former Smiths bandmate Johnny Marr, who remembered “my mate (as) one of those rare people that absolutely no one doesn’t like,” in a statement on social media.
Marr said Rourke “reinvented what it is to be a bass guitar player,” during their time as Smiths.
“Well done, Andy,” Marr said. “We’ll miss you, brother.”
