2/?: Coming Home

Clint returns to the circus in the hope that he can find any hint of mate.

Every morning since Bucky had left, Clint had prayed that it was some nightmare, some paralyzed demon playing tricks on him. He begged God or whatever deity that existed to just listen to him, to wake him from this nightmare. He wasn't religious by any means, but just needed someone, something to listen to him.

To give him this break that they deserved, to have some confirmation that Bucky wasn't tired of him. That was his downright fear, the one that paralyzed him in his tracks. What if Bucky was tired of him? What if Bucky found him to be too much?

The fear paralyzed him and made it impossible for him to breathe. His chest hurt, he couldn't breathe, everything felt like it was paralyzing.

Out of pure habit, he brushed over the letter that was always on his person as he bundled the blankets to his chest and buried his face into them. Bucky's letter.

If Bucky truly hated him and found him to be far too much, then why would he leave him a letter? Why wouldn't he just disappear into the night?

The thought was enough for Clint to pull his blankets down, hearing Natasha padding around in his kitchen. She had breakfast on the table, the smell of coffee greeting him. It wasn't Bucky but it was nice to have life back in his kitchen, he had to admit.

He smiled as he heard her talking softly to Alpine and Lucky, watching the other half he could see Lucky's tail wagging a mile a minute. It was glad to see them happy again.

"There's your handsome smile," Natasha greeted him, spotting his bed head rising from the blankets. "Come on, I made breakfast. Your favorite - chocolate chip waffles and bacon."

He wanted to say no to food, the idea of eating made his stomach churn uncomfortably but he ignored it. She'd gone out of her way to make him his favorite breakfast, it be rude to ignore her. Trudging to his feet, Clint let his feet trudge towards the kitchen, exhausted.

"Thank you," Clint breathed as he sat at the kitchen island, the plate in front of him was making him want to get sick. "It all looks great, Natasha, thank you."

She was good about not watching him like she was inspecting him under a microscope as he started to eat, more or less just pushing the food around on his plate. She was used to him being in some state like this, leaving him to his own devices when it came to eating. As long as he took a few bites, Natasha was good.

He only managed a few bites before his stomach started to revolt against him eating, the taste, the texture, it all made him want to gag and truthfully it felt like a waste of time. The more time he wasted on trying to eat, the less he had time to search for Bucky.

He needed all the time he could get to search for his beloved mate. He'd already let the farm go into shambles, paying a neighbor to take care of the daily minimal tasks that couldn't be avoided.

"So..." He wrapped both hands around his steaming coffee mug, sipping on it to avoid her gaze. "Have you...have you..."

He trailed off, unsure if he even wanted to know the answer, if she'd manage to find any information or not. He didn't know he could handle it if she wasn't able to find anything out.

"Give me some good news," he finally spat out as she leaned into the island to watch him. "Please, even if you got to lie to me."

SHAPPY’S 10 AMAZING FACTS ABOUT KINGS ISLAND -- THE BEST AMUSEMENT PARK EVER

10 COOL THINGS ABOUT KINGS ISLAND AMUSEMENT PARK IN THE 70s & 80s

1. When you walk through the entrance, you are greeted by Fred & Barney, Scooby-Doo, Hong Kong Phooey and half of The Banana Splits in front of a dancing water fountain in front of a fake Eiffel Tower!

2. In 1975, Evel Kneivel jumped over 14 Greyhound buses in the parking lot setting a new world record!

3. It has THE BEAST! The biggest, baddest, longest, fastest, wooden roller coaster in the world! On one of it's test runs it ripped the head off a dummy! (Or was it really a human being?)

4. Both The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family shot episodes there!

5. When you rode The Screamin' Demon, one of the world's first looping roller coasters, it would stop mid-loop and people's wallets and sunglasses would fall out on to a little island full of monkeys in front of the Wild Animal Safari. The monkeys would throw all the tourist flotsam and jetsam at each other like their own poop!

6. Crafty lions and leopards kept finding ways to break out of the Wild Animal Safari which added a real sense of danger to that area of the park!

7. They sold fruit drinks in molded plastic fruit that represented whatever flavor you were drinking. Grape juice in grapes, orange drink in oranges, etc. As a kid I thought this was marketing GENIUS!

In The Happy Land Of Hanna-Barbera they had a ride called the Enchanted Voyage which was an air-conditioned boat ride through a giant television set.

8. They had an old-timey locomotive train ride that took you back in time to the pioneer days and real cowboys and indians used to jump out of the woods and on to the moving train scaring the crap out of little kids (including me)!

9. TimberWolf Theater got cool bands to play! I saw The Four Tops & The Temptations with my mom & dad! My first concert! Over the years I see Huey Lewis & The News, .38 Special, The Go-Go's, Paul Young and Tears For Fears! Shout, shout, let it all out!

10. In The Happy Land of Hanna-Barbera they had a ride called Enchanted Voyage (see a vintage home movie below) which was an air-conditioned boat ride through a giant television set. While you waited in line they played all the theme songs to my favorite Hanna-Barbera shows! I must have taken this Enchanted Voyage a hundred times! When you floated in there were all of your favorite cartoon characters come to life! The Hillbilly Bears! Wacky Races! Squiddly Diddly! At the end of the ride you entered a Scooby-Doo style haunted house and then spat out into some sort of psychedelic circus. Then they changed it to The Smurfs in the 80s and harshed my mellow. But I remember that ride like I just got off the boat and back in line.

It might have been the closest thing to nirvana I have ever experienced.

Curses.

Barney doesn’t believe in curses. He doesn’t believe in hexes or evil eyes or bad juju. Karma is perhaps pushing it; he’s more of the philosophy that bad shit just happens. But curses? Not so.

And then, there’s Jacques Duquesne.

He can’t deny that if curses did exist, it would be in that name. It’s a curse in of itself. Something you say in the dark, in the dead of night, when you’re bleeding and dying and when your last ditch effort at a belief in anything mystical comes to play.

What hurts most is he looked up to him once. When the circus was still new, when someone cared enough to step in. It had been a moment he’d never forgotten. Even to this day. Seeing a grown man quake under a protective threat that Barney was included in (and not giving himself).

A saviour, a friend, a mentor, a father figure…

Jacques had been a hope for something better. A future for them both. And Barney admits, he’d been blind for awhile. Gone along with encouragements and soft whispers for that one scrap of validation. He’d idolized him. Until the patterns had re-emerged and history repeated itself again. And he’d realized one night, his face throbbing, that things weren’t going to be the picture in his head and they never would be.

They’d been fools.

He’d had to get out. Tried so badly to take Clint with him. But they’d fought because sometimes his brother didn’t see for this. And he could only protect his brother so far as Clint would let him. They’d found the line then.

(And he’d left it behind.)

Often, he wonders what they would have become if Jacques had never been there to fill the void. He doesn’t know.

But to this day he still can’t bring himself to fully say that name, lest the demon rise from memory.

“Yeah,” he says quietly, darkly. “Ain’t no point in givin’ ‘em more attention.”
