May I present: Quarlani Revar!

She is a Dispater tiefling whose birth parents were cultists and not particularily good parents. They were revealed and executed when she was about 10 in a paladin raid during which she herself was not discovered. She spent a few months after that surving by stealing and lurked around the local graveyard with very vague and frankly terrible plans of reviving parents. The gravekeeper there was an elvish Kelemvor priest who was more perceptive than she expected and who did very much notice her lurking around and breaking into his book collection. He let her work around for a time, knowing she’d inevitably fail and finally confronted her when she attempted the ritual. Begrudglingly impressed by her fierce loyalty and tenacity he took her in as an apprentice. Originally she only accpted to continue stealing books and learn the secrets of resurrection, but eventually they both grew to like each other and she eventually let go of her childhood and earnestly followed her (by now) adopted father’s footsteps into the priesthood of Kelemvor. (As I don’t know yet how my DM is gonna play Kelemvor I can’t say exactly what her relationship with him looks like, but I think we’re on the same page to make it as weirdly intense and intimate as possible.)

Revar is her adopted father’s last name which adopted of her own accord, and Quarlani, which means Spirit in elvish, is the name he gave her, to replace her old one, Scorn.

It's been a while since I've made an original post, so let me talk about what I'm working on right this moment.

The biggest thing I have on my plate is the Gloomhaven TTRPG. I'm working with Isaac Cephalofair to create the best translation of the board game system to a ttrpg system we can, while at the same time writing up an outline. We already have a lot of the systems work done, so really it's getting into high gear to hire authors and get the rest of the book moving. I'm excited about this one.

Next up is At the Gates which is my own personal game using Onyx Path's internal Storypath Ultra system. This is a high fantasy game deeply inspired by jrpgs like Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, the Mana series, etc. Unlike Fabula Ultima (another great game you should check out!) this game isn't completely focused on the combat, but I will say a lot of the way you build and level a character for combat is inspired by that. Also 4e DnD, because that game really knew what it was on about as far as combat strategy goes.

I've got a project I'm under strict NDA to not talk about. That makes it very hard to hype it here, but I'm certain folks who are fans of Onyx Path's brand will be excited for. I can't wait for folks to see what we've been finding regarding this project.

Finally, Exalted. As the Inhouse developer for Exalted, I get to set the pace for new books, and boy howdy are we about to move at lightning speed. We're gonna get some stretch goals out to you faster than you can blink.

What type of werewolf are we talking here? Classic bipedal or twilight style giant wolf? Somewhere in between?

Are any of the other characters werewolves, and/or does Chip know any others?

Is lycanthropy a known thing? How do people react?

One of my D&D books has a section on lycanthropy, and while you can play player characters affected by it, it goes hand and hand with the Evil alignment (it’s an older book, not sure about lycanthropy in 5E). Is this similar in your AU, or are werewolves misunderstood?

for the TYPE of wolf... I totally leant more into mythology rather than werewolf movies. ive never actually watched a werewolf movie (although, a friend said wolfchip would be like the wolves from twilight so now im planning a marathon with IRLs.... oops) I'm doing a lot of worldbuilding into the nature and magic of werewolves and that stays hidden but.. - physically they are BIG. like twilight wolf sized... big big. - They have no tail (a mythology thing for werewolves!! common for creatures rumored to just be witches in disguse actually) I was VERYYYYYYYY much not going to pull the werewolf pop culture thing and have some 'weird human-wolf hybrid cross' because i did not like the idea tooooo much..... would rather be taken out back and killed with bricks than make chip bipedal wolf-man hybrid thing.... noooooooo...... also in human form werewolves are distinctly inhuman!! Won't go into TOO MUCH worldbuilding of mine but essentially, among other things their wolf form and traits fluctuate with the lunar cycle. on new moon they're indistinguishable from human, on full moon they're fully wolf, and all inbetween is a mix of traits. It all depends on when you catch em, whether it's day or night, whether it's new moon or close to full moon.... you might not know what you're signing up for if you find a normal person on the full moon only for them to change as the lunar cycle goes on, lol. but from mythology these are the traits which often identify a werewolf in human form - unibrow (not giving chip this one. no dice) - low, swinging stride (yes!) - lower set ears (also yes!) - when the skin is cut, there is fur under it! (yes, but i felt might be too obscure for people.... not included in common werewolf pop culture sadly...) as well as a few special things of my own!!! I ALSO HAVE A PHOTO OF WHAT WOLFCHIP LOOKS LIKE!! i found this on a dog grooming video on tiktok and went 'thats wolfchip."

2) Yes! I have one confirmed werewolf NPC (of my own making for the purposes of the story) and am toying with the idea of making another character a werewolf. It won't be too big of a deal though... just a neat little reference!! 3) now THIS is staunchly spoiler territory!! sorry dude!!! 4) this is also spoiler territory but what i will say is that I did not go off of DND modules (although it wouldnt hurt to give them a read...)!! I play BECMI and 5e as my DND modules among other TTRPGS but i did not lean from any of them. Honestly, I didn't take much inspiration for my werewolf worldbuilding outside of some mythology shit (and not a lot, anyway). I think i just went off the general, well known werewolf myths and said 'ok what can i do with this' and i sewed and cut and now it is a new beast. it is MY beast. TYSM for your questions!!! I’m struggling atm with trying to write a proper sickfic for this man, here’s a compilation of headcanons and scenarios in the meantime since I don’t think they’re worthy of their own posts. *sweeping the DnD vampire lore under the rug*

Potential SPOILERS! + Angsty stuff

-Astarion getting a bit too cocky, thinking that because the tadpole negates some of his vampire related weaknesses and lets him daywalk, he doesn’t have to worry about those things AT ALL anymore… and of course he’s proven wrong.

-Maybe someone at camp is cooking with garlic or using it in some sort of alchemy and he’s surprised to find that it still sets him off, turning him into a sniveling mess, having to excuse himself through a fit of sneezes, running off to his tent or into the woods, his face absolutely streaming.

-Running water may not burn like acid anymore, but that doesn’t mean having to wade through that frigid stream won’t result in catching a cold.

-I can’t decide if sick Astarion would downplay his illness not wanting to be pitied, or exaggerate and be incredibly dramatic about it, but it’s most likely the ladder.

-He definitely complains A LOT! It’s both endearing and annoying.

“Darling, I’m feeling absolutely dreadful, I don’t think I’ll make it much longer…”

“It’s just a cold, Astarion.”

“But It’s dreadful!”

-Despite his dramatics, Astarion would need to be fairly close with Tav to actually let them get close and truly take care of him, seeing him in that state. Complaining is all well and good, but he doesn’t want to be seen looking unkempt and sickly with snot running down his face, he doesn’t want to show any real, true vulnerability.

-If Astarion does allow Tav that closeness he’ll be incredibly touched by their care, he’s not going to show it of course, but on the inside he’s melting. No one’s ever been this nice to him, Cazador certainly never treated him well when he was sick. It’s hard for him to comprehend the genuine love Tav is showing him, finding himself emotionally overwhelmed.

-Fevers make his nightmares worse. If he’s sleeping with Tav he’ll sometimes subconsciously reach out for them. They know how to comfort him by now, gently giving his hand a squeeze, spooning him, or just holding him as tight as they can if it’s a really bad night.

-Astarion being allergic to one of the animals at camp. Trying to feed on it like the bastard he is and getting a face full of feathers or fur, immediately getting launched into a sneezing fit, allowing the creature to escape.

-Maybe instead of being afraid or aggressive that particular animal ends up taking quite a liking to him…

—I never get asked this question, so thanks for being the first lmao. (I did write my “S5 hopes” before, but these are different I think?) Anyway. Hmmm.

While they both love Tolkien, Mike likes the Lord of the Rings trilogy books more, but Will enjoys the Hobbit best. Mike loves the depth of the lore and complexity of how Tolkien describes things in the original trilogy because they help him when he’s coming up with campaigns, but Will enjoys the straightforward (and a little sweeter) narrative of The Hobbit more—and also has a preference for it because the version he had as a kid was more image-heavy, and he’s an artist. :)

Speaking of Tolkien—Mike absolutely has a one-ring he keeps around his neck like Frodo. (It may even be what he chooses as an engagement ring way, way down the line, but Will is so outdone he decides to just buy it to wear it around his neck instead lol).

When it comes to getting work done, Mike is a think-out-loud type—as in, will talk to himself out loud and not even realize he’s doing it when alone, or with someone he’s comfortable getting into his head around. Will doesn’t say anything about it, because he thinks it’s hilarious—but Mike eventually learns about his own tendency when Will knows about a surprise he had planned before he can even do it…because he was thinking out loud. (He gets up in arms about how Will should have told him, but the more time passes, the funnier the tendency becomes to them).

Mike was hype as hell for the release of Jurassic Park in 1993. Will was also hype, but. Not nearly as excited about it as Mike was. When the Peter Jackson’s LOTR adaptation was announced, they were both over the moon (though Will was a bit scared. He is very picky about his movies, and adaptations even more so).

The two of them would settle in San Francisco, and would definitely be the ones who run a “teach DnD / campaign night” in conjunction with a comic book store in their neighborhood, in an attempt to keep the younger generations’ love for it alive—the same way as the bookstore owner who introduced them to the book. this is maybe based on an actual comicbook store with a dnd night in the SF Castro that I found a few years ago. The world may never know. They are thrilled in 2016 when a new Netflix show (😉) and Critical Role revives people’s love for it when they’re much, much older.

The first time the topic of “going to pride” comes up in the mid-90’s (long before it was the socially accepted event it is today), Will is mildly terrified—and so is Mike, but his “brave paladin” side absolutely talks himself up enough to get Will to join him solely out of a need to prove he can. They end up having a great time, and Mike, who has never really delved into queer history, ends up on a whole tangent of learning about it for an entire month afterward. Will finds it v endearing.

Mike sucks at poker because he cannot keep a single thing off his face. He is, however, really good at playing “the house” in card games, so that’s the role he takes on (comes from years of leading campaigns. He’s a bit of a showman that way).

Will cannot stand cold even after he’s disconnected from Vecna/the UD, and misses California—which is why they move back. When “global warming” talk starts becoming more common, his favorite dad joke to make is “if I think it’s getting hot, it must be,” but no one but the party & family know why it’s funny.

Earlier into their relationship, Will becomes a bit troubled by the fact that Mike is the only person he ever dated. It causes tension in their relationship for a little while, though Will eventually realizes he doesn't want to be with anyone else, so it doesn't matter. (Much later, Mike admits that he thought Will’s concerns were unfounded, considering the only person he ever dated outside of Will happened when he was 13 & probably shouldn’t have even been his girlfriend in the first place, given the fact that she was 3 seconds out of a lab…& he doesn’t even like women anyway).

Mike knows Will is healing more from “the events of the show” when Will starts making dark-humor jokes about being possessed and/or being lost in the upside down—though it takes him a lot to get used to it, given how scared he spent years being about losing Will. Eventually he gets on board and laughs—which Will appreciates, because it helps him to see Mike get less uncomfortable and feel safer about keeping Will safe after all that happened.
