Song Review: Bella White - “Numbers” (Alt. Version)

Bella White pours her personal and professional worries out on “Numbers.”

Originally released on - and a highlight of - 2023’s Among other Things, “Numbers” is back as a stripped-down Alt. Version that trades a full country band for guitar, fiddle and drums and a slower tempo as White, fretting about relationships, turns her attention to album sales:

Well you would think that I should feel happy/but the truth is I feel spent/and the numbers they’ve been climbing/just not enough to pay my rent/I didn’t used to think much of the numbers/but now they’re always racing through my head, she sings.

The power of White’s songwriting remains in this rawer rendering. And had it been the final version, it’d been yet another fine addition to her songbook. The album version, however, is superior.

Song Review: Bella White - “Rhododendron” (Alt. Version)

Bella White took a sad song - her own “Rhododendron” - and made it sadder.

Re-recording the track from this year’s Among other Things LP as an Alt. Version, White took the bare-bones approach, adding only light drums and mournful fiddle to her voice and acoustic guitar.

Unfolding over five-plus minutes, “Rhododendron” is the story of a mama robin (aka White) navigating a world full of hungry cats (aka humanity’s myriad problems) and and concluding:

For this weight I bear leaves me so damn scared/I guess we’ve all been hurting like a little bird I’m learning

The resulting arrangement brings White’s unique vocals and analogous songwriting to the fore. Striking as it would be coming from anyone, it is even more so coming from the 22-year-old (!) White.
