We’re reposting this rumination on Joan Didion and biker cinema we posted some time ago, as Ms. Didion just passed away. We’re big fans of her work and her essays are as essential now as ever. Our ideal world would have a thriving independent biker movies movement that played like Didion’s thoughtful, complicated essays, but remixed with the reviving, roaring still motors and rolling western highways intact. •••••••••••••••••• The great essayist Joan Didion wrote that “bike movies have constituted a kind of folk literature for adolescents” that “located an audience and fabricated a myth to exactly express that audience’s every inchoate resentment, every yearning for the extreme exhilaration of death.” She also “kept going to these movies because there on the screen was some news [she] was not getting from The New York Times.” —————- We wonder if Ms. Didion ever saw this (probably especially raunchy) biker film, or if this movie even still exists, or if it’s just a ghostly poster for a former movie at this point. ——— #joandidion #slouchingtowardsanewbikercinema #motorcyclegirl #bikemovies #bikesploitation #bikermovies #bikers #movieposterart #lostmovies #carlostobalina #anewbikercinema ————- #undergroundfolkliterature #theextremeexhilirationofdeath #newsyouwontfindinthenewyorktimes #revivingandremixingoldformsintonewforms (at Motorcycle Heaven) https://www.instagram.com/p/CX1t1s_lRiQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

uhhhh George Romero’s Excalibur-meets-sidehacking movie made me cry???
Ok, credit where due: Romero’s deft touch and Ed Harris’ incredible sold-out performance were the double whammy what did me in. Fuck he’s good in this! I honestly think this is his best performance I’ve seen? This man was 30?? Get out of here.
Anyway. Most of this movie came as a surprise to me — I added it to a Shout! Factory order to reach free shipping, based on what looked like a fun/cheesy bikesploitation romp from George Romero. Didn’t spot the 2hr 26m runtime until I had it in my hands, which is when I realized this would be something other than what I thought. Cheese woulda have been fun too, but this is so much more.
As a person avidly into doing make-believe as committed as possible, I couldn’t not perk up when it became clear that these touring Ren Faire bikers were 100% bought-in to living by their quasi-chivalry code. This isn’t staged wrestling bouts: if an upstart wins the crown in a cycle-joust, they’ll literally be running the show. Zero kayfabe or irony about it. So that shaggy runtime adds up to a lot of pretty great practical motorcycle fights, and a ton of very earnest 70’s hangout-movie vibes centered on community, friendship, & creative collectives among a set of misfits, outcasts, & outsiders. It would be hard not to love that.
Plus, beyond Ed Harris we’ve got Tom Savini as a co-star, Lyta Alexander from B5, Donald Gennaro fully formed 12 years before his triumphant dismemberment in Jurassic Park, and even Stephen King in a cameo as a boorish punter. An embarrassment of riches!
The other thing that prompted me to roll the dice on this was missing the Wyrd War programming at the Hollywood Theatre. It’s often pulpy genre stuff I’d never hear of or quite get around to watching on my own, & I like getting knocked out of my own patterns that way. I can’t tell if they’ve ever screened this, but now that they’ve got screenings happening again I will probably be writing them an annoyingly earnest letter begging them to do so soon, lol. Would very much love to see this on the big screen.

THE DEATH WHEELERS Sounds Absolutely Filthy On New Song "Divine Filth"
THE DEATH WHEELERS Sounds Absolutely Filthy On New Song “Divine Filth”
[ad_1]
The Death Wheelers are back and somehow even crustier than they were on their debut album. The Death Wheelers are streaming the appropriately-named “Divine Filth” off their coming album of the same name due out September 11. The track spans everything from revved-up shred to sludgy breakdowns alongside a bikesploitation-meets-Escape-from-NY-style music video. The end result is a huge grin…

The Death Wheelers "I Tread On Your Grave" - Test Pressing
Hand-stamped & hand-numbered to 30. $40   Heavily inspired by the aesthetics and ethos of bikesploitation movies such as The Wild Angels, Werewolves on Wheels and Psychomania, The Death Wheelers seek to glorify this unsung era of movie making through their sordid sounds. Taking musical cues from rock’s greats such as Davie Allan, The Cramps, Motörhead, The Stooges and Grand Funk Railroad, the…
