"A new community housing development in the Bronx will feature a cool piece of kit: an on-site aerobic digester that can turn 1,100 pounds of food scraps into 220 pounds of high-quality fertilizer every single day.
Built by Harp Renewables, it’s basically a big stomach filled with bacteria that breaks down food scraps and wasted food into their component parts, and in the future could be a standard part of all apartment units as the amount of food waste in American reaches 30% of the total mass of all trash collection.
The Peninsula, organized by Gilbane Development Company, will feature 740 units of affordable housing, 50,000 square-foot light industrial space and equal sized green space, and 15,000 feet of commercial space, all of which will send their castaway comestibles right into the digester...
Fast Company reports that Christina Grace, founder of a zero-waste food management company, helped plan the design and implementation of the digester into The Peninsula, and helped organize a 40% grant from the city to pay the $50,000 upfront cost.
“The goal is for this material to work its way into the community garden network in the Bronx,” [Christina Grace, who helped plan the design] told the magazine, adding that she expects it to pay for itself over just a few years. “We see this as highly replicable in both commercial and residential venues. We know there’s a need for fertilizer.”
Producing fertilizer right there in the city reduces the need for it to be trucked in from afar, chipping away, even if just a bit, at NYC traffic.
Big problem solver
Perhaps uniquely beneficial to New York City compared to other spots in the U.S. is that the digester will have a significant impact on the Bronx’s share of the city’s rodent problem.
Those who’ve watched the Morgan Spurlock documentary Rats will understand why that’s significant—while those that haven’t will have to imagine what living in a megacity where rats outnumber people by around 8 or 10 to 1 looks like.
Another big problem the bio-digesters could potentially help is pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Fertilizer is a big emitter of all three of the most-targeted GHGs. Fertilizer, like quarry dust and ammonia is, like so many commodities, often imported from countries who specialize in its production, such as Norway, but also Russia and Ukraine, whose conflict has recently highlighted the fragility of the supply chain with sharp increases in prices...
Bio-digesters by design keep the CO2 and methane in the fertilizer produced, rather than it entering the atmosphere.
For these reasons and more, the aerobic bio-digester is slowly making its way into residential and industrial spaces around the country.
GNN reported on an enormous bio-digester at the heart of the D.C. advanced resource (sewage) recovery center outside the capital, and on the use of bio-digesters on Australian pig farms which are helping reduce the environmental and psychological impact of the effluent produced from such operations.
Harp Renewables tweeted how happy they were to have installed their bio-digester in the town of Cashel, Ireland.
Expect to see more stories like this pop up around the globe."

Note: Obviously gentrification bad and "affordable housing" is sometimes nowhere near as affordable as it should be, etc. etc. That said, this is such a fantastic use case that I felt I had to post it anyway.

If we are talking poison/healing/whatever drugs, here is how administration is ranked by speed of effect:
Inhalation/smoking
Intravenously (aka an injection specifically into a vein--this is different than an epipen, for example, which is an intramuscular or sometimes a subcutaneous injection)
Snorting a powder
Other injections-- Intramuscular or subcutaneous
Suppository
Ingesting a liquid (faster if on an empty stomach)
Eating
It takes about an hour for anything to get through your stomach, though this will be highly dependent on whether or not food has been consumed recently. Drug absorption does not occur until a drug has passed from the stomach to the small intestine. Oral administration of an antidote could be useful when the drug/poison was administered in food--depending on what kind of antidote it is, it can bind the poison rendering it unable to be absorbed or blocking whatever mechanism of action it has, or prevent it from being broken down into toxic metabolites, and it can do this in the stomach before the poison has reached the victim's system.
Without an antidote, if a poison has been swallowed, purging is the next best solution. Get as much out of the system as you can before it's absorbed and hope whatever was absorbed was not enough to kill you.
These two methods are fully useless for an inhaled poison. Inhaling an antidote is an option, nasally or possibly through a nebulizer or something like that. IV admin of an antidote would also work fairly quickly and is A+ for getting your hero out of a bind. IM injection, like an epipen, also works fairly quickly. Anything else will be pretty slow, so depending on how quick/devastating the poison is, you'll be SOL.
In the real world, an example of this is Narcan (Nalaxone). Used in the case of an opiate overdose, it can be administered intramuscularly, intranasally (inhaled), or intravenously. Anything else would be too slow to be effective.
IM injections are preferred over IV because any person with a hand can work it. Best case scenario, you apply alcohol to the skin of the thigh, belly, or occasionally the sort of bottom meaty part of your upper arm, wait for it to evaporate, and then jab that sucker in. Most people are not trained to find veins.
All of that said, in a magical world with magical items with magical healing properties, you know, you do you. If drinking a potion can mend a bone, I don't see why it couldn't stop a poison. But inhaling that potion might work faster. And eating a solid will never quickly remedy a poison that is already in the blood.

Bringing Renewable Energy to Local Farmers.
Tumblr media
Eco-innovative farming solutions are vital to ensuring the global reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to agriculture. Biodôme du Maroc, a small, fast-growing Moroccan company, provides local farmers with a technology that gives them access to renewable energy for on-farm use. Founded in 2013 by Dr. Fatima Zahra Beraich, Biodôme du Maroc is the first Moroccan company to specialize in the recovery of organic waste through natural treatment and environmentally friendly processes. This is to enable farmers in rural areas to produce biogas and fertilizer.
Tumblr media
For the environment, biogas helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from abandoned organic waste and minimizes the risk of polluting waterways. This “clean” method of energy production also reduces reliance on wood as a fuel source. Biodôme du Maroc offers a range of small-scale agricultural anaerobic digesters. These digesters use a simple and innovative system to produce biogas and recover organic matter. Inside underground concrete enclosures, farmers can deposit different kinds of organic waste, such as household, plant and animal waste, which is fermented in a biological accelerator. In this process, gas is produced through methanization or anaerobic bio-digestion, where bacteria naturally break down organic matter within weeks.
Tumblr media
By providing a technology that produces gas from organic waste, Biodôme du Maroc gives local farmers access to renewable energy for agricultural production.
Dr. Beraich currently holds six patents covering innovations that improve the efficiency and performance of Biodômeʼs bio-digesters. “The process of securing a patent means that our technology is evaluated by experts and allows us to understand just how different our inventions are from other competing technologies. This allows us to protect the inventive characteristics of our outputs,” explains Dr. Beraich. “With these patents in hand, we hope to be able to license our more recent patented innovations.” The support of the Moroccan Association for Research and Development (R&D Maroc) – part of the network of Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs) in Morocco – has played a critical role in the success of Biodôme du Maroc. “I learned about the TISC network at an outreach event at the University organized by the Moroccan Industrial and Commercial Property Office,” Dr. Beraich explains. R&D Maroc helped Dr. Beraich secure seed funding and also ensured she had the help she needed to draft her patent applications, and license and access the technology she required to create and commercialize her bio-digesters. Biodôme is currently marketing its patent-protected bio-digesters in Morocco and across Africa.
