He looks at her reflection. She doesn't pay him any mind; just keeps playing on her phone. "What's sad?" he repeats.

"This. Faking the hero shit." Her voice is so unaffected, it's starting to remind him of his own. "And the worst is that I know you could be more than that. You could so easily be a hero. The love of the people would be real. The headlines wouldn't be written by Ashley. I'd have fallen in love with you twice over. But you just… don't." Her words are little dreams, and when she stops speaking, he watches them tumble off the table edge and shatter.

He finds himself staring at the ground for quite some time, looking for shards. He blinks himself awake. "It's too late now," he mumbles.

Cozy Corner Domaystic

Inspired by Domaystic, this Cozy Corner event celebrates fic/art/edits/etc. that shows the caped blorbo in everyday life situations. That includes some classic domestic trope and potentially fluffy prompts, but because we all love to see Homelander in situations, I've also added plenty of everyday hassles.

The event includes 31 prompts, one for each day of May (though you don't have to stick to the order), plus a few alternatives for those who want to fill 31 prompts but find no inspiration in some of the main prompts.

A big thank you to @bisexualhomelander for brainstorming prompts with me -- and especially for coming up with the glorious "mundane use of powers" prompt!

As always, rules are minimal. Fill however many prompts you want, in whichever order you want, with whatever medium you like: fic, art, headcanons, gif sets, video edits, etc. Fills can be for a ship or for gen, and most of the prompts are sufficiently ambiguous to allow for either. You can also combine prompts and fill a prompt twice if you feel particularly inspired.

As a general tag for the prompt fills and so I can find and reblog them, I would suggest #cozy corner domaystic. All fills will be reblogged to the freshly renamed @cozycornerevents blog (unless you say that you don't want reblogs, of course). You can start filling prompts before May 1, but I won't be checking the tag as regularly until the beginning of May.

Does anyone else find it hard to do this lol? My spatial "last line" in every google doc of a chapter in progress is a graveyard of text that I wrote but then removed. And my last line where I stopped is often for a good reason, not just because I ran out of time. So it's a line that is likely to go into the graveyard next time I look at it.

I don't know if this fic (chapter) will ever see the light of day, but technically this is the last thing I wrote:

Sometimes his imagination took him to more ludicrous places. Asking William what he wants. And when this coarse filthy-mouthed Brit would inevitably tell him to go suck his dick in the same tone as ‘go to hell’, by god, maybe he’d grin and do it, even though he’s never done anything like it before, just to enjoy the bewilderment on William’s face. He wanted to see William undone, dramatically, humiliatingly, by his own hand. He wanted to thank him for taking care of Ryan in the same breath as telling him he’d been waiting to see this sight. He wanted to deposit him back where he plucked him from, and in the morning have breakfast all together as a family, maybe William looking a little worse for the wear, maybe Ryan noticing but never guessing why.

The last thing I wrote of something that will see the light of day, but maybe not this particular part lol:

“He doin’ alright?” “He’s… doin’ better each day, let’s just say that.” “Looked fine in yesterday’s photos plastered all over the papers.” Butcher shrugs. “Yeah, he was damn intent on taking a good picture. They had a whole operation set up in the flat, hair and makeup, them lighting umbrellas and white backdrop and everything. But he hasn’t even been up and about much. They had to airbrush his face, he’s been so fucking pale.” “The baby get airbrushed too?” Judy asks and Butcher smiles because that's just like her. “Not while I was on watch. I’m sure they touched everything up in post though. None of 'em magazine pics ever look real.”

“I know that you’re always watching me, Butcher.” Homelander’s eyes were unnervingly blue and piercing, wide open and unblinking the entire time—like a pair of blackholes the viewer couldn’t look away from. “You’ve chased after me this long, hoping for a chance that I’d look back and see you. …Well, tiger, you got your wish. Big day’s coming. I know we’ve had our share of misunderstandings. But it’s time to finally put the past behind us and start brand new. Don’t think I’ve forgotten our promise. Of all my birthday saves, you will be my crowning glory. Like I told you, you and I share a different destiny.”

I need to cheat because the last thing I wrote is a chapter outline, so here's an excerpt from the second to last thing that I wrote: a Maevelander one-shot:

“Text me!” Maggie yells. “Or call. I don't give a fuck. Just don’t— don't do this, okay?” “Don’t do what?" A pair of blue eyes is staring at her uncomprehendingly.  Sometimes Maggie would love to know what's going on inside that brain. Most of the time, she just wants to drive her sword through his skull so she could stop those neurons from firing for good. But there's not a sword in the world that can do that, and all she has in her hand right now are her keys and her giant bag of groceries that she’s trying not to drop. "Don't do what?" Homelander repeats. Godfuckingdamnit. She can't tell if he’s pretending or genuinely confused. Doesn't matter. There’s a crowd of people forming behind him. “I'm off the clock, okay?” She tries to push past him, and he grabs her wrist. "Don't do what. Maeve?" He can be real stubborn, and there's that menacing tone again, subtle enough that an outsider wouldn't notice, but it's obvious to anybody who's ever spent more than five minutes with this man. The crowd is growing by the second. Wherever this man goes, people follow. The cameras can't be far behind now, Maeve thinks. She needs to handle this now. Homelander tries to cup her face, and her hoodie slips off as she tries to dodge his hand. “It's Maeve!” Somebody yells. “That's Queen Maeve!” Maeve drops her groceries, pushes the door open and pulls Homelander inside before slamming it shut. “Thanks for telling the world where I live,” she hisses. “I'm going to have to find a new apartment now.”

I just really admire you as a person, a writer of concepts, a writer of smut, and a fandom Citizen. ❤️❤️❤️

@kosmochlor You have been the lifeblood of Butchlander fandom (and probably several other HL centered smaller fandom branches) by being such an attentive fic reader and commenter. Many people who read widely and get too impatient and/or judgmental to leave any comments, let alone detailed, encouraging comments. I look forward to seeing your comments on fic I read, not to even mention ones I write. I also admire your imagination for high-concept premises, and the fics you’ve written (I tore through the latest Little Stranger ch, I will comment!!), and your meta that ties together different works of literature/media ❤️❤️❤️

@xieyaohuan I’m very glad to have met someone with a zany sense of humor, with whom I can enjoy even the worst shows, and hopefully this means we can provide emotional support to each other even if s4 is baaaad. I love your attention to details and tendency to organize and document fandom-related material so much (recovering academics unite 🤜🤛).
