I tried a poor man's version of Chor Muang!
Tumblr media
Poor man's version: Use corn starch instead of rice/tapioca/arrowroot flour (way too precious ingredients in the West to waste on first attempts), sieved tomatoes for food coloring and adjust the fillings to accommodate for the extra tomato-y taste it'll cause. (The camera made the ones in the pic look way more carrot colored than they really are...)
Trying to do the proper flower shape quickly proved to be an inane idea without having those tweezers, so instead I tried making this (kind of) flowery looking by other means and also used some gyouza fry-steaming technique instead of just simple steaming. (About halves the cooking time.)
It was good fun to experiment with all the sculpturing and food coloring. Until We Meet Again as a narrative may have hit a bunch of my worst dissonant notes, but it serving a proof of concept dish that combines non-sweet savory flavors with the artfulness commonly reserved for confectionary and is an actual legit easily portable dessert/snack was a blasted bloody REVELATION. As someone who doesn't eat sweets, this feels like a find of a lifetime, especially since it allows for sheer endless amounts of variations.
So this is just thanks for wielding your latent salesmen powers to make people acquainted with the show. ✨
BRILLIANT!!!!!
please send more photos and tell more of your experimenting if you proceed!!!!
Did you adapt from a recipe , or just go with your own innate dumpling knowledge?
(Innate Dumpling Knowledge is also the name of my wizard in that one D&D game...)

Despite the rather, er... interesting shenanigans with food in KP, the true showcase is Pete and food as a theme throughout the series. For Pete, food is a mark of comfort, connection, and love. He is completely devoted to his job and following the rules.
In fact, the only bodyguard rule we see Pete break involves food and, specifically, food his grandmother sends him. He connects to Porsche by sharing it with him, before even sharing his name, marking the beginning of their friendship.
Tumblr media
Pete doesn’t complain about the bodyguard food, because while it’s not appetizing, it is healthy, which is important to help him stay in shape for his job. Eating that healthy food is a mark of his connection to and love of his job, his purpose.
Tumblr media
When Vegas is holding him prisoner, at first he refuses to eat(i.e. connect to Vegas) He gets beaten for it, but that still doesn’t make him concede. He’s imprisoned and starving and still, food means so much to him that he won’t give in. Literally, this guy shrugged off torture, but an unappetizing meal? That’s a bridge too far. Metaphorically, this is him rejecting what Vegas is offering him right now(being treated like a pet, eating off the floor).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even after Vegas bandages him up and gives him medicine, he rejects the food. (You treated my wounds but I’m still leary. Is this really a change? Because it still looks like the old crap)
Tumblr media
It’s not until Vegas makes the noodles for Pete, hot, fresh served to him in bed, that they really make the first connection.
Tumblr media
Food is not only the way that Vegas and Pete really connect for the first time. It’s the way that Vegas sees Pete for the first time.
Tumblr media
Once he understands how important food is to Pete, not just sustenance but more, he happily goes out of his way to offer Pete that. That’s why it’s particularly egregious that Gun knocks the food onto the floor. He’s not only disrespecting and dismissing Vegas’ efforts, he’s literally dirtying and destroying the connection between Vegas and Pete.
Tumblr media
Pete and Vegas separately try to recreate the comfort of the connection between them with food, but they can’t.
Tumblr media
By the pool, Pete deliberately uses that connection to try and pull Vegas off the ledge and back to him.
Tumblr media
When Pete says “I’m hungry,” he means, I need connection, I need comfort, I need love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And when Vegas asks if someone else can give him that, his response says no. No. Only Vegas can give him that.
And finally, the epilogue begins with Pete coming back to the hospital with food for Macau, building new connections of comfort and love.
Tumblr media
The show does such a beautiful job of character-building for these characters. They never feel like an afterthought in the KinnxPorsche show.

Joke is a Fresh Spring Roll (and Zo is a Picky Eater)
So it seems that Hidden Agenda has decided to play with it's food....
As an audience, the first thing we learn about Zo is that he likes to play it safe. He absolutely hates being taken out of his comfort zone and will seek out the familiar when and where he can. Case in point: he's had a crush on Nita for YEARS and he can barely bring himself to walk past her when they're in the same room.
It also seems like his desire to play it safe also extends to his food; he has a set dish - basil chicken with fried egg over rice with no basil - and a set drink - chrysanthemum tea - and he has absolutely no interest in deviating from them. He knows that he likes those two things, so that's what he'll have and it's what he'll continue having until the end of time if he has it his way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately for Zo, however, Joke has other plans.
Almost as soon as they start spending time together, Joke is on a mission to expand Zo's taste buds, get him to try new things, and challenge his ideas of what he likes. It starts as early as sealing their pact with the Roselle juice (which Zo does not like), then carries over into their dinner at the Vietnamese restaurant (which Zo makes a show of not enjoying), and then on into their second dinner date.
Joke is constantly trying to get Zo to try new things and will even go so far as to make their deal of him helping win over Nita rest on wether or not Zo will try his food:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joke is trying to use food to open Zo up to trying new things that he doesn't think he likes.
Just like with his basil chicken and rice, Zo has never considered other options on the romance menu and Joke is well aware of this. From what we've seen so far, Zo has never considered liking anyone other than Nita, no matter how unsuccessful his suit is. Further more, it doesn't seem like it's ever crossed Zo's mind to consider men as romantic interests and even if he has, he's definitely never seen Joke as anything more than someone who annoys the heck out of him....
And because of Zo's very closed and risk-averse mindset, this in unlikely to change on it's own.
So Joke is wooing him with food, new food to be precise. Using their little dinner dates, Joke seems to be trying to (very gently) get Zo used to trying new things, to going out of his comfort zone and to becoming open to the idea that what he thought he liked (basil chicken and Nita) aren't necessarily the only things he likes and that maybe he likes other things more (fresh spring rolls and Joke).
And the thing is, it's working.
Zo may not have liked the Roselle juice but even with all the fuss he put up in the restaurant about eating the spring rolls, he still liked them enough to want to order them alongside his chicken at the lunch stand and when Joke said he'd feed him the macaroni, Zo eventually gives in by (albeit fake grudgingly) going to try it himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joke's love language is apparently food and what he's currently telling Zo is "You're a picky eater and I'm a spring roll but maybe (just maybe), if you try me, you'll like me"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Also a side note but using the act of trying new food to represent (and act as a prelude to) the journey of queer self discovery is pretty darn cute and while I'm not expecting anything overly deep or groundbreaking from this show I am definitely here for it]

I noticed your reblog of @tortibomb's post on the subtitle team at Viki for Until We Meet Again. I've watched Until We Meet Again on WabiSabi's YouTube channel twice. If I were to watch it again would it make sense to watch Viki's version so I get their subtitles? Would there be any advantage to get a different subtitle team's perspective?
For clarification, I use English subtitles, and I see it's still available on YouTube.
Yes! Definitely watch both versions!
Viki's subs using full teams (most of the time), because they are done by committee these tend to be slightly more correct and consistent (but not as elegant or poetical as a single translators POV). They are interesting because they come from a group think perspective. Even if they can be kind of... formal.
It's like the difference between accuracy and precision.
Tumblr media
In house (like Wabi Sabi and GMMTV) and Gaga seem to be just one person (with maybe an editor or two).
With language (and linguistics) + translation there often is a lot of grey space to make judgement calls and no exact this = that, so it's really fun to see how a different voice or voices handles the same subject matter.
Also it'll give you a greater understanding of Thai, and perhaps the narrative, too. Or you'll learn your own biases about what you like translated and in what way. (Like I hate it when phi is translated as bro.)
I adore it when a Japanese and Taiwanese shows are airing on both Viki & Gaga in particular because the subs are so wildly varied. I like to watch both. Sometimes back to back.
I know I'm a monster.
But it's sooooo fascinating, especially considering the history of the relationship between the 2 countries, and the parent companies of the streaming platforms in play. (Gaga = Taiwan, Viki = Japan)

Me right now because I thought I could handle ordering something and choosing the hottest option from my local Thai restaurant, and my lactose intollerant ass is drinking milk in between every bite to even be able to eat it 🤡 It's really good though, so 🤷‍♂️🥲

Ah, yes, the chef who pulls frozen nuggets out of his restaurant freezer to impress the boy he's flirting with... that's real product placement for you.

(I'm sorry, those are just sad compared to, you know, all the other food in the show and that makes it even funnier. I am cackling.)
