My piece for @bambeptin's Generator Rex art telephone: promises!

I did many things differently here from how I usually work (the lineless color styling and many texture gradients + layout), so this was a lot of fun! Thank you for organizing this art telephone, Bamboo! The piece before me by Bean @forestryfae was so impressive in my mind, I had to find a way to represent everything in that, as well as make my own take on it and the whole piece became a fun challenge.

bobo is a very interesting character to me because he does not feel like he fits in the setting of generator rex. he and rex are the only evos who work for providence and while rex has the excuse of being super special and different, bobo seemingly just has a job bc it's more convenient for providence to have him on their side and rex likes him

there are times where rex acts kind of like he feels alone in the world, like when he tells circe he's never met anyone like her before (evo like him) and there are moments when ppl talk shit about rex for being an evo and everyone kind of just ignores bobo? and if they don't ignore bobo they ignore the fact that he's an evo?

iirc also bobo is the only character who used to be a regular animal and became more humanlike from going evo, if we believe that the backstory presented in "robo bobo" is true. and when rex cures everyone in the last episode all of the incurables are cured too EXCEPT FOR BOBO

he shares a room with rex even after white expands rex's living space. why do they share a room? do they share a room because they want to share a room? why? they both complain about the other being so stinky. why do they share a room

the more i think about bobo the more questions i have which sucks because no one should think about bobo this hard. i love the guy. he's so confusing

My most controversial GenRex opinion is that Bobo Haha is an interesting and useful character.

Bobo is Rex's "cute animal sidekick," a one-eyed chimpanzee with the intelligence of of a human and the morals of a...chimpanzee. He is incredibly obnoxious and unpleasant. Ostensibly he's there as backup to Rex, but realistically he's just there to make Rex and Six look good. He's basically a Rob Schneider character. What possible purpose does he serve?

First, Providence's choice of cross-species womanizer drinker and gambler Bobo Haha as roommate for teenager Rex speaks VOLUMES about Providence's care for Rex's mental health and moral upbringing. It's like giving a racehorse a goat for company. It only makes sense if they never plan to let Rex out of their control again.

Second, Bobo's amoral cynicism serves as a foil for Rex's idealism, Six's tortured killer complex, and Holiday's self-righteousness.

Third, Bobo's sense of humor makes Rex's jokes seem funnier by contrast.

Fourth, Bobo is vulnerable to White and Six's anger in ways that Rex is not, and he knows this. Bobo's reactions to them serve as a reminder that the organization, especially in the first season, is dangerous to anyone it can't use. But he's enough of an asshole that his fear is funny, at least to kids who aren't thinking hard enough about it.

Six: *audibly raises eyebrow*

Bobo: “so many people owe me so much money”
