Had a thought about this: the reason why we have Agarthan/Nemesis/Slither stans is probably the same reason why we have fans of Almyra or a desire to make Alymra more interesting. It's a part of transformative fandom culture where people wish certain aspects of the game were explored more than what the game gave them. People wanted to see more of Almyran culture than what the game portrayed which is that they like to pillage and engage in wars. In the same way, there are people who want the Agarthans to be more interesting than being blatant Saturday morning cartoon villains who are the embodiment of the Dark Knight line "Some people just want to watch the world burn". Heck with Thales' line where he decries the Nabateans for defeating and exiling them, I can see where some people wanted to explore that angle, unfortunately ignoring how the whole thing was the Agarthans fault to begin with by starting wars, killing innocents, burning the world down and then attacking Sothis out of fear when she revealed herself.

But yeah, I can kinda get where some of that desire to make the Agarthans more interesting come from. Doesn't excuse the pro-genocide and nativist/xenophobic rhetoric though.

Yeah, I can understand wanting the comically evil mustache-twirling villains to be more complex but ultimately that leads to them making some very wild takes.

"The Agarthans have to be more morally gray so that means the Nabateans were alien colonizers (ignoring how the Nabateans were born on Fodlan) and deserved to get slaughtered in Zanado."

Or my favorite: "Nemesis is considered to be a hero so clearly the Nabatean rule was really bad and Rhea is just hiding the truth (ignoring how the devs use the word "cure" for the Nabatean rule)."
