This was my piece for the Warriors ultimate guide Zine hosted by @harriertail !! Done over the summer :)
I did Rootspring(paw) and Tree in a sort of mock cover style for The Silent Thaw. Both the characters and this book are very dear to me, for personal reasons as well, so it was a pleasure to execute this idea for the zine! Glad to have been a part of this project💖

Leafstar and Squirrelflight are going to kill me
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as you can see, in silent thaw Squilf literally told Leafstar about the impostor, but we don't see it because rootpaw was probably drawing "R+B" inside a heart somewhere.
So,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
why the hell it looks like she doesn't know anything in Veil of Shadows? is it one more case of no talking between leader and medcat? is it leafstar way to protect her Clan or something? most probably, did the Erins forget?
THAT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!! I just want to understand why is this girl acting so mysteriously what did I miss why is she not saying like yas I knew it already tell me something mew 😭

I genuinely have a real problem with how little the Erin’s explained Ashfur’s sudden powers in TBC. I know they did it to make a threatening villain, but it really really annoys me how much they just improvised the whole thing without ever giving a hint of explanation. The closest we got was his POV in ALITM where he monologued about finding the barrier between Starclan and The Clans. And that honestly isn’t even the bare minimum of what they should have explained. What about his mind control powers? What about why The Dark Forest was dying because of his mental state? What about why he was able to place spirits in other bodies? I’m sorry, but it really bothers me that none of this was explained even a little. Because that gives the authors clarification that they can just make shit up on the spot for the sake of convenience and never feel like they should take the time to think of a basic explanation. That’s not good writing, that’s improv! I’m fine with them beefing Ash up as a villain, but would it have really been too much to ask for some decent background for how it happened. The Broken Code literally feels like an arc that was made up as they went along! Which is a pretty terrible way to write any book series!

if i had a nickel for every ashfur-affiliated cat who technically died and came back to life, i’d have two nickels. which isn’t a lot, it’s weird that it happened twice.

i enjoyed all perspectives equally this time unlike the last book where shadowsight was the only thing keeping me from boredom, the plot is finally picking up the pace and it is doing so fast
im excited to see what the next book has in store!
check out the tags “frans reads veil of shadows” for the upcoming liveread! for the previous books check out “frans reads the silent thaw” and “frans reads lost stars”

Some of y’all may remember my theory on The Broken Code from way back about the StarClan war, and I feel like bringing this back as an AU to TBC.
Lost Stars is close to the same as canon, but with more emphasis on the codebreakers. The Silent Thaw is a bit similar, except imposterstar is more focused on exiling the codebreakers than anything else. There’s a scene where he goes to ShadowClan with Bristlefrost and Squirrelflight, and tries to convince ShadowClan to make Tigerstar step down as StarClan wishes him to. This is what leads to the big battle.
Squirrelflight gets fed up, and snaps at imposterstar. The imposter is very upset, but more in fear than anger. Squirrelflight leaves to go to ShadowClan, and imposterstar spends his time alone in his den for a bit, leaving Bristlefrost and Berrynose to do everything.
Imposterstar then changes afterwards? He tries to bring back the cats he exiled, and tries to get Squirrelflight to come back. ThunderClan is super confused.
The battle happens, and Harestar is killed by Lionblaze and experiences the whole StarClan thing again. He exposes the imposter for lying, and Bramblestar loses a life. Bramblestar then seems to have come back, and ThunderClan celebrates.
Rootspring then finds another spirit, who introduces himself as Ashfur. He begs him to take him to Squirrelflight, and then he explains everything.
Ashfur had always felt alienated in StarClan for his actions, and was only let in because his mother Brindleface begged to have him there. StarClan felt split, as the clans seemed less reliant on StarClan. A war started on whether to have the clans rely on StarClan and the warrior code again, or to let them be independent. The pro StarClan side planned on having a leader be possessed to convince them of being more reliant on them. Ashfur wanted to “redeem” himself, and offered to possess Bramblestar. However, he realized he was in the wrong as Squirrelflight snapped at him, and decided to rebel against StarClan. He reveals Harestar is possessed, and turned on him. Bramblestar is still possessed, but instead by a different cat.
As the arc goes on, the theme of redemption is a big thing in the books. The Dark Forest cats still help out, but have a chance to actually go to StarClan after helping out the clans. StarClan is reformed after its corruption is revealed, and the clans live more independently of StarClan.

I'm rereading Warriors: The Broken Code rn (I plan on reading book 5 and 6 soon so gotta reread 1-4 just to remember what happens. It's been like 2 years) and Im suddenly remembering all the weird thoughts I had reading through each book.
Like I remember reading The Silent Thaw and thinking, "Man, poor Rootpaw. He's stuck as the only person who can see Bramblestar's consciousness." Because I hate Bramblestar and I've hated him since The New Prophecy and Squirrelflight's Hope only furthered my hatred of him. No I will not take criticism.
I also vaguely remember choosing not to ship Rootspring with Bristlefrost and instead jokingly paired him with Shadowsight. Because I'm pretty sure Shadowsight and Rootspring actually had a genuine friendship or were at least on good terms. Rootspring put Bristlefrost on a fucking pedestle and Bristlefrost basically went "eh. Fine, I'll give him a chance..."
But again, I don't remember much so I'll get back to that once I've read the rest of The Broken Code.

seeing Breezepelt at the “cats worried that Bramblestar is going too far” meeting makes me think he just misses the “secret society gathering at nights” vibes he got from the dark forest and just jumps on any new secret society that gives the same thrill.

The sentiment that every cat/almost every cat in the clans has broken the code at some point comes up continually in The Silent Thaw, and while it's definitely true, it is kind of telling that this is just an accepted fact up until now. Like "Yeah we decided on this set of rules which (up until now, at least) just about everyone agrees on being morally good and a valuable way to live your life and serve your community. But also everyone has broken at least one of these rules and we all know this and it causes no dissonance in our worldview."
Obviously I'm not saying this is unrealistic - there are plenty of people who hold the same conflicting thoughts about real life laws - but it does really underline the idea that the Code is flawed on some fundamental level if breaking it is basically expected. It does, however, make it sort of wild that there haven't been more cats who wanted to change the Code in the past. Then again, given the values and behaviors the Code reinforces, maybe this isn't actually all that shocking.

I know there are lots of WC books, boy do I know. But put your most faves of the series and rate them - shipping-shiggy.
oh fuck this is HARD
hmmmmmm...... im gonna do this in categories i think, putting under the cut bc this could get long
alright i'll start with super editions, since theyre the most cut and dry i think
crookedstar's promise, it's super good, very emotional, i love crookedstar
tallstar's revenge, very gay, love it
this one's kinda difficult bc i havent read most of the older ones in a long time, so i think my answer would probably change once i've reread them, so... tentatively, im gonna say crowfeather's trial, for the sole reason that i have been a crowfeather fan since i was 10
ok next up im gonna do it by arc, and then after that i'll pick my faves out of those faves
for the prophecies begin:
into the wild, ofc
rising storm
i think a dangerous path and the darkest hour are tied here
honestly, the first arc in general is just rly solid, probably the best in the series (altho not my favorite arc)
now for the new prophecy... disclaimer, i havent read these books in at least 6 years, and i dont remember hardly anything so im going off wiki summaries lmao
starlight (windclan civil war my beloved, oh if only you were better fleshed out and expanded on)
sunset (good bramblehawk content lmao)
moonrise
power of three time
eclipse!! when i was a kid i reread this book over and over bc i thought the battle in the tunnels was just SO fucking cool, and yknow what? i was right
dark river
the sight
omen of the stars
the last hope for the sheer impact it had on me as a kid (also i still cry over firestar's death lmao)
night whispers
the forgotten warrior
dawn of the clans, my favorite arc!
the first battle, it has my favorite line in the series and is just. so good.
a forest divided
path of stars
a vision of shadows
SHATTERED SKY this is in my top 5 of all time, i LOVE how fucking dark it is, i can't get enough, i want more warriors books that are this level of fucked
thunder and shadow
the apprentice's quest
honestly this arc... kinda sucks lmao, it has some high points but overall... nah
the broken code! this is probably my 2nd or 3rd fave arc, i rly liked it
lost stars, incredibly strong start to an arc
the silent thaw, was not bored for even a single page reading this one, which is very rare for warriors
darkness within bc of how dark it is, even in comparison to the rest of this arc; like, that scene where the sisters are trying to summon bramblestar's ghost but instead it's a bunch of ghost cats screaming in agony?? fucking awesome
aaand i can't rly rate the current arc since theres only one book out dnfgdjkfh but i really loved river, i think this arc is gonna be pretty good!
soooo overall rankings! we have:
shattered sky, i could read it again and again, i swear
the first battle
into the wild
and just for funsies here are some of my least favorite books, not rly categorized bc im getting tired of typing<3
yellowfang's secret, leopardstar's honor, squirrelflight's hope, the sun trail (seriously fuck this book), outcast (every time the erins write a traveling book i die a little more inside), the fourth apprentice, river of fire, and the place of no stars
