Oh, Brumm with Mato. How would they get together? I feel like Brumm is extremely reserved while Mato is the polar opposite. But that is probably why they are perfect for each other.

Yeah this kind of opposites attract scenario is exactly why I find the idea very fun to think about. And there is definitely some precedent for Brumm to be drawn to someone a lot less reserved than him.

I mentioned it in his backstory, but he had a family before joining the Troupe. He tragically lost them (I haven't decided on the details yet, but they all died in the same way, sadly) and that made him so reserved and distant. Even after so many years of his service in the Troupe, he hasn't fully moved on. And his crush on Grimm is a good example - Grimm is very flamboyant and much more open, which I like to think reminded Brumm of his dead partner who had a similar personality. But as it turned out, he was blinded by the similarities and desperate to find the comfort he lost, if that makes sense. The feelings weren't fully genuine, and I think Grimm turning him down was when he realized that.

So he had many years to process his thoughts, and by the time Vyrm returned from hibernation, he was completely over it. Sure, he still sees Grimm as physically attractive, but it's hard not to - Grimm has this alluring aura to him that's hard to resist. But there are no feelings involved anymore, and in a lot of ways being rejected all those years back helped him get his mind back on track.

That said, seeing Grimm in a happy relationship with Vyrm made him wonder. He wanted to have someone like that, and he thought that perhaps now he was ready to do so without his past dictating his feelings. That's where Mato comes in, he started visiting Dirtmouth regularly in the past year or so, and he caught Brumm's eye. Mato is a skilled fighter, but has this warm, comforting aura to him. He's much more talkative and joyful than Brumm, and this kind of contrast is what Brumm really needs. But unlike with Grimm, this isn't a result of his grief, this time it feels genuine.

I don't think they're in an actual relationship just yet, but there's definitely a suggestion that it could go there. In many ways it's similar to Vyrm's feelings for Grimm, it's going to take a while before Brumm thinks he's ready to he open about it. Plus I love the idea of Divine and Grimm noticing it and gently nudging him towards it. They are friends, after all, and I think Grimm especially would want Brumm to be happy. He knows about his past, and he remembers rejecting his advances years ago, so the prospect of Brumm finally finding a partner is something he very much looks forward to. And Divine just really enjoys being the matchmaker type of friend, she's very supportive like that - she already gives Vyrm advice on romantic matters and supports him and Grimm wholeheartedly, so she would absolutely jump on the opportunity to hype up Brumm and Mato. Perhaps it's connected to her not having a partner herself (in this AU she's a lesbian, so the whole Leg Eater thing didn't happen), she's too busy with her work and has no time for relationships. Cheering on her friends' romantic journeys is a way of expressing her romantic ideas that doesn't distract her from her craft. Maybe she will eventually find someone, but for now she's content with her position.
