You had just finished plating the last of the pancakes and fried the rest of the bacon before he had come wandering in.
The drag of his feet was what gave it away, so you already found yourself smiling softly at him- before he was within your view. But sure enough, there he was. Dressed in a pair of pajamas that hung very loosely on his lean frame. And bed-head sticking up and out and down and around and all sorts of different directions. And of course- there was that passive expression on his face. The tired, half-lidded eyes, complete with the dark rings that symbolize another tireless night. The mouth almost settled into a frown. And the hands, previously hanging limply at his side.
Now reaching out, hoping to grab at you.
“You’re up so early, Rei.” You whisper to him quietly as he shuffles a little closer. You catch his dark blue eyes for a second behind his messy bangs, and he just offers up a half-groan, half-grunt in acknowledgment. You smile at him again, offering up something a little bit sweet for the exhausted man in front of you before turning your attention to your last task before waking the other two in the apartment up to eat. “I’m almost done with breakfast. Can you go ahead and sit down at the table for me?”
He lets out another groan, and this time it’s accompanied by a mumble too low for you to really make out. Luckily, he stops moving further in the kitchen and opts to linger by one of the countertops you’re not currently using. Still a little close. But not quite in the way. Just yet, at least.
With a sigh, you shake your head playfully at him and get back to work. He’s always been a bit clingy in the morning. Ever since he and Kazuki had convinced you to move in. So much so that the early morning visits when it’s your turn to cook breakfast for everyone are starting to get less and less surprising. Even though you know he never does this to Kazuki.
However as your hands start to move again, you find yourself pulled back into the task at hand. At least for a little while. Currently, you’re cutting up strawberries. Pulling at the leaves. Separating the berry from its stem. Letting your small knife pass through the even smaller pieces of fruit as you chop them up into thin little slices. Easy for a little girl like Miri to snack on and enjoy without making too much of a mess. Plus, you know Kazuki is particularly fond of this brand of strawberries that you picked up the last time you went shopping. You know he would definitely enjoy some cut into some bigger pieces. He might even appreciate it if you sprinkled a few of the strawberries on his pancakes. Maybe you could even make them in a nice pattern too. Or even a cute little strawberry face on Miri’s two pancakes. Hmmm…
While you’re lost in thought, absently cutting away at the strawberries and wondering if you should stick to the simple bowls of fruits or do something special, something wraps around your waist from behind and squeezes tight. You can’t hold in the sudden gasp that comes pouring from your lips in surprise. The feeling of arms circling your body isn’t too unfamiliar, but you were just so focused on breakfast that you nearly forgot about Rei standing nearby, watching you as you worked. So for a second, you nearly jumped out of your skin as your instincts told you exactly what to do. Stay very still. Tighten your grip on the weapon in your hands. Assess the situation.
But as your mind began to catch up with everything that was happening around you, you felt the brush of dark, messy hair against your neck, causing you to shiver for a second. And soon after that, followed an increase of pressure- the feeling of someone letting more and more and more of their weight fall onto you. It’s then that you do finally realize that it was Rei- clingy, sleepy Rei- holding onto you from behind and crowding into you- like you’re the most comfortable thing in the world.
“Rei…” You murmur, almost afraid to raise your voice any louder in favor of keeping the quiet atmosphere that had fallen between the two of you once more now that your heart has settled. You put down the knife and abandon a half-cut strawberry in favor of turning your head and trying your best to look at him from over your shoulder. Still, he acknowledges the call of his name by letting out another low groan before stepping a little closer to your backside and squeezing you a little tighter. You wonder if he’s able to smell exactly what you’ve been cooking all morning. You wonder if that’s what caused him to stumble in the kitchen like a lost, lonely puppy today. “Give me a little more of a warning next time! You scared me…”
Rei lets out another quiet groan. But this time, when the mumble follows, you’re able to hear it loud and clear as he speaks the word into your skin.
“...sorry…” He apologizes- head turnt and lips brushing against your neck as he speaks. It causes you to let out another shiver, but judging by the way you feel him almost smile into your skin, you have a feeling that must have been what he wanted all along. Because in that moment, the hands around your waist are trailing downwards. Slowly, slowly, slowly. But with open palms and fingers stretched wide as the hands around your waist become the hands around your hips, to even the hands dipping past the fabric of your short, pajamas shorts. Touching and feeling and exploring the bare skin that was left exposed and vulnerable.
Your breath hitches in the back of your throat as his touches get a bit bolder. A bit more intense. But you don’t him to take his hands off of you. And you make no move to pull his hands off of you either. No, instead you’re watching. Instead, you’re waiting. Looking at the way his hands travel the expanse of your body. As if his goal was to memorize the shape and the feel of your curves. Running his hands up and running his hands up and down and up and down as he cherishes every chance he gets to get a feel of you. The real you. All of you. Now that parts of you are covered by a nice pair of silky sleeping shorts. Not the parts of you that are covered by one of the boy’s ratty old t-shirts. The real you.
The very parts of you that you’re willing to share with him. The very parts of you that you want to share with him.
So when Rei peeks his head over the side of your shoulder and locks eyes with you, you just let yourself give a little nod to his unasked question. It’s all the confirmation he needs to let his hand start reaching down once more. Only this time, they’re not going to rest over the top of your pajamas. This time, it’s one hand reaching for the waistline and pulling it down- your panties included. Dragging them down as far as he can without having to change too much of his position. Letting you experience the drag of fabric against your skin and the slight coolness of your nice and damp center being exposed in the kitchen.
But you aren’t left with a whole lot of time to think about how indecent you are. You aren’t left with a whole lot of time to think about how you should move to the bedroom or at least hold out until you know the two of you will have some more privacy. Because by then, Rei has already stepped impossibly closer to you.
And had just pressed his sizeable erection right against your ass.
The thin pair of pajamas he’s wearing leaves little to the imagination- even on touch alone. You feel yourself letting out another gasp at just how hard and thick and defined his cock feels just rubbing up against your skin from behind- even with a layer of clothes still separating you from it. From behind you, you swear you could hear Rei let out a sound- a quiet chuckle. But all too soon, both his hands are at your hips again. Gripping it, instead of wrapping around. Letting two coarse palms dig blunt nails into your skin as he pulls your ass into his cock and grinds.
Running his hardness up and down and up and down and up and down the expanse of your ass. You try to follow his movements. You try to keep up- try to grind back into him. Roll your hips in a way you know he likes. Throw it back ever so slightly- just to give him a surprise. But in the end, you just can’t keep up with his speed. You just can’t keep up with his eagerness. With his desire to have his way with you- even if it’s not through the usual means, he likes to seek pleasure from you.
Still, you find yourself smiling again. At least ever so slightly. Now, the kitchen is no longer filled with the sounds of bacon cooking and feet shuffling. Now it’s filled with the sounds of Rei’s harsh breaths in and out as he gets himself off using your body and friction between the two of you. Now it’s filled with your gasps of surprise and pleasure whenever Rei manages to pull off a move that somehow pleases the two of you at the same time. But most of all?
It’s filled with a man. Starved down to his bones- looking for something to feast on. Looking for something to satisfy him. Looking for you to satisfy him. And luckily for him.
You know just exactly what he needs in this moment.
And you’re more than happy to give it to him too.

Pairings: Rei x reader Buddy Daddies fluff, descriptions of gun violence
Wordcount: 4,027 (revised 22/03/23)
You weren’t exactly sure how long ago it had been - a year, possibly? More? - but on one particular torturous night, he’d strangled you after what he deemed a ‘stressful day’. Your throat was sore for days after, your vocal chords husky and raw. You found it easier just to not talk after that and he seemed happy enough with the development, so you were too. If you spoke, there was a danger that you’d say something to upset him and he’d lash out in anger. Of course, he still did lose his temper and you would bear the brunt of his anger, but now it was only over other grievances rather than anything you brought on yourself.
You didn’t even flinch when he jammed the cold metal of the gun into the side of your skull. It wasn’t the first time, that’s for sure. He did it a lot at the start of your time there, enjoying your sobs as you feared for your life. Now you just wished he’d just pull the trigger. Get it over with – you weren’t sure of your purpose here. You were the maid - you cleaned and served him and were his personal punchbag. Thankfully, he’d never touched you in that way, but surely he’d had enough enjoyment out of you by now.
It had been a typical evening in the house – he’d retired to his study with his cigar and whisky while you cleared the dinner table for him and his goons. The gunfire had started soon after that. You hadn’t thought too much of it at first, sometimes when his men drank they got a bit trigger-happy with each other over minor disputes. It was only when he ran into the dining room, gunshots echoing behind him that you realized it wasn’t as you first thought. He grabbed you around the neck, breathing heavily as his assailant entered the room and your abductor pressed the gun into your head.
A sullen man with an undercut and black hair tied up upon his head is staring at you with an equally blank stare on his face as yours, his aim steady. He’s dressed in a well-fitted, obviously tailored suit - a professional, you guessed.
“Let her go,” you heard a voice hiss behind you, another gun cocking. He was trapped, surrounded by two guns. The barrel left your skull and then everything happened in a blur - someone yanked you back and threw you down to the ground as there was a single gunshot. Your abductor’s body crashed to the floor, blood oozing from a hole in the middle of his forehead.
You look up, expecting a bullet to hit you next. The two men stand over you, looking down. The voice behind you turned out to be a blonde man, classically good-looking with fluffy hair and also very well-dressed. You watch as he puts away his gun and crouches down in front of you.
“Are you okay?” The blonde man asks gently and you must’ve given him a confused look as he backtracked. “No, stupid question. Is anything, er, broken?” You'd hit the floor pretty hard but nothing had cracked. You shake your head.
“That’s good. How long have you been here?” You think for a moment, opening your mouth slightly but the words don’t come. It was the only defense mechanism you had left. If you don’t speak, no-one can get mad when you say the wrong thing, right? And these two were assassins, clearly. They’d just put a bullet in your abductor’s head and maybe you’d be next if you didn't say what they wanted. You resort to a shrug – it's honest, you don’t know how long it’s been.
The blonde frowns, before pursuing his line of questioning.
“Erm… Well, is there someone we can call for you?”
You shake your head again, twisting your fingers in your lap.
“Do you have a name? I’m Kazuki, and that’s Rei.” He points to the black-haired man behind him.
You dig your nails into the palm of your hand at that. Your name… You shake your head.
The blonde looks at his partner in desperation.
“And the rest of the house is clear?”
“Mm.” Rei confirms. “She’s the only one left. She wasn’t in any of the files.”
Kazuki sighs. They’re in the middle of nowhere. He can’t, in all good conscience, leave you here, especially in the state you appear to be in. They know that eventually they’ll be another drop and the deaths will be discovered, but who knows how long that’ll be and won’t they blame you? The pony-tailed man raised an eyebrow, seeming to read his thoughts.
“If you get to bring a kid and a woman home, I’m definitely getting a cat.”
“I know, I know,” Kazuki mutters. “But we can’t just leave her here. Let’s take her back to the city and then maybe Kyu will be able to dig up something about her.” He turned back to you, debating. “Maybe she’s got some personal items. Do you have a room here? Can you show us?”
You swallowed before nodding in the affirmative. Why would they want to see that? You got to your feet and the blonde quickly stepped in line with you. Rei stalked behind, his gun still drawn.
You led them through a back passage to your “room”. It wasn’t really a room to be perfectly honest, it was a broom closet. The door had a heavy padlock on it but it was no longer used - you’d stopped trying to get out of there long ago. You swung the door open and pulled the cord, a solitary light bulb flickered and illuminated the grimy room. There was a pile of blankets on the floor – your makeshift bed - and a folded pile of two dresses, socks and undergarments. Your ‘uniform’. Screwed into the concrete wall was a shackle but, as with the padlock, it had been a while since it had been used.
“Uh… Okay. I...” The blonde stumbled over his words. “I was going to ask if there was anything you want to bring with you, but I guess not.”
You looked down at your feet, awkwardly. Those were the only clothes you owned, but you didn't particularly want to bring them with you.
“Okay, let’s go. We’ve got a van out the front. We’ll get you back to the city and take it from there.” You followed Kazuki dutifully to the front door, Rei once again walking behind when you saw the outcome of the ambush. Your abductor’s security team strewed about the floor, some riddled with gunshots, some a single wound but all very much dead. It should’ve shocked you and it would’ve however long ago, but it wasn’t the first time you’d seen corpses since you’d arrived here. Thankfully, you'd never been given that clean-up.
At the front door, Kazuki looked down at your sock-clad feet – frilly white thigh highs of all things to match that horrendous maid outfit he had you wear. “Erm, do you have any shoes?”
Shoes? You shook your head. Why would you have shoes? You never went outside. You had them once, but you don’t know what happened to any of the things you’d been wearing when you’d first been brought here.
“No? Right. It’s not far, will you be okay to walk like that?”
You nodded. If you had shook your head, would they have left you behind?
The night air was crisp and the freshest thing you’d ever tasted. On occasion you’d pushed your face right up to the windows, trying to breathe it in, but it was rare. The house had always had someone around, yanking you back from the window in case you tried to jump.
There was a catering van parked off to the side of the driveway. You hopped in the back as instructed and sat in the chair Kazuki pointed to. Rei took to the steering wheel and they began the long drive home in silence.
You didn’t want to or even mean to, but the motion of the van had you dozing on and off, meaning you'd pick up snippets of their conversation.
“Maybe she just can’t talk.” You hear Rei suggest.
“No, I think she’s traumatized. She’s covered in bruises. How long do you think she’s been there?”
“Dunno.” A pause. “What are we going to say to Miri?”
--
An hour or so later, you arrived back in the city. They parked in an underground car park and you followed them to the elevator, up to what seemed quite an elaborate apartment.
Kazuki insisted you sleep in Rei’s bedroom – the man wasn’t really using the room anyway, he’d told you - and you weren’t really in a position to disagree. He’d given you a rundown of the facilities. “So, the toilet’s downstairs near the front door. Rei sleeps in the downstairs bathroom. Don’t ask." He rolls his eyes and then slams his hand into his forehead. "Sorry, no, that sounds insensitive. I mean, if you wanted to ask that’s fine. I’d love to hear you speak, actually, but… Ugh. Okay. Sorry. You’re safe, it’s late, I’ll let you get some sleep.” And he ducked out the room as fast he could.
--
You didn’t get a lot of sleep. The bed was nice but after months of months on a floor, is it possible that a bed could feel too soft? A lack of sleep wasn’t new though and you had technically napped on the drive here. Your duties at the house often ran late into the night and started early the next morning. When the sun rose that morning, you were already up, sat perched on the end of the bed, feeling anxious. What were you meant to do? What were they going to do with you now?
As these thoughts swirled around your head for however long, there was suddenly a knock at the door. “Er, morning! Are you awake? I won’t come in…” It was Kazuki.
You got to your feet and sprinted over to the door, opening it swiftly - he’d hated waiting for anything.
“Hi!” Kazuki gave a great big smile, clothes in hand. ”I hope you slept okay. I forgot to offer you some clothes last night, but I’ve found these.” He handed over the bundle. “They’re clean – things I’ve been meaning to get rid of since they’re a bit small for Rei now. The shorts are gonna be way too big, but they’ve got a drawstring so that should keep them up. Is that okay?”
You nod, clutching it close to your chest.
“Okay, well, you get changed and I’ll come back in five. Breakfast should be ready soon and you can meet Miri – she’s our little girl. You might’ve heard Rei talk about her last night. See you soon.”
You nodded, and he shut the door. You walked back over to the bed and laid out the garments. A white t-shirt, soft grey jersey shorts with a cord and a black zip-up hoodie. How long had it been since you hadn’t worn a dress? You pulled it off and over your head before pulling up the shorts. Kazuki was right – they were too large but pulling the drawstring tight and securing it in a bow sorted out the issue and the t-shirt was only a little oversized and the hoodie was cosy and covered the bruises on your arms. Thinking of the little girl they'd mentioned, you also kept your thigh high socks on, knowing they would also hide the purple marks on your calves. It was the comfiest you could remember feeling in a while, though.
A knock at the door. “You ready?”
You jogged to the door again, throwing it open, before standing straight and clasping your hands in front of you.
“Okay, great! Er, just follow me.”
You descend the spiral staircase and see a little girl sat at the coffee table, scribbling happily across three pieces of paper, a box of crayons spilt out in front of her. There's a man sat besides her on the sofa, headphones around his neck and mashing at a controller. It takes you a second to recognise them as Rei - he's dressed more far more casual now - in a pair of sweatpants, a navy t-shirt and hoodie on top and his hair is down. Off-duty.
“Hi!” The little girl gasps, her eyes widening in interest at your presence. “I’m Miri, what’s your name?”
Kazuki watches in interest as you open your mouth but quickly close it again, digging your nails into your palms once more.
“Er, Miri, this is Papa Kazuki's…” he hesitated, thinking of how best to phrase it, “..friend. She’s not feeling too well at the moment. She’s sort of lost her voice.”
Miri's eyes widened. “Like a spell?”
“Yeah,” he nods. “Like a spell.”
“You must be a princess!” She squealed, remembering a storybook. “But what’s her name?”
“Er, well…” Kazuki scratches the back of his head. “That’s where we’ve been struggling.”
“Oh, I know, I know!” Miri grabbed another piece of paper and scribbled on it before sliding it over in front of you, alongside a crayon. “See, it says ‘Miri!’ Now it’s your go – write yours.”
You bit your lip before kneeling down besides the coffee table and picking up the crayon. Your hand was shaking. Your abductor had never called you by your name - he'd called you maid, stupid girl was another favourite, and there was a myriad of derogatory terms used by his goons. You’d fought back the first few weeks, when your spirit wasn’t crushed. Your penmanship was as wobbly as Miri’s, but Kazuki read it over slowly, a frown across his features.
“I don’t remember is a funny name!” Miri squealed. There was silence in the room – even Rei had stopped mashing the controller buttons for a beat.
Kazuki winced at Miri’s statement. “No, Miri. I think that must be part of the, er, spell.”
“Oh…” Miri frowned, pondering for a moment. “Well, I’ll call you princess! Sit with me, princess!” She tugged at your arm, trying to pull you up to the sofa besides her.
“If Miri gets to call her princess, can I call her kitty?” Rei's voice makes you jump.
“Princess Kitty!”
Kazuki looks mortified at his company. “It’s not up to me! Is… is that okay with you? I mean, until we can figure it all out.”
You nod – they were nicer names than you were used to.
Breakfast was a far more lavish affair than you were used to – the plates were laden and there was so much choice. Rei and Miri said grace and you bowed your head in thanks, following suit. The two then proceeded to demolish their servings before you could even fathom, quickly abandoning the table for their previous activities at the sofa. Kazuki chuckles, “Yeah, they’re like that, unfortunately. We can take our time.”
The food felt rich and heavy in your stomach, so you forced a bit more down than you originally wanted so as not to seem ungrateful. It was never a good outcome. Kazuki got to his feet and stretched, and you took it as your cue to start clearing.
“Oh, no, no, it’s okay. You’re our guest. Go sit with Rei and Miri - relax.”
You froze, relax? What…?
“Yeah, come sit with me again, kitty!” Miri chimes, patting the space besides her. “We can watch Papa Rei win!” Seems like she’d be won over by Rei’s name for you.
“Sorry,” Kazuki rubs the back of his head. “I promise when we find out your real name we’ll nip that in the bud. Go, sit."
You walk over to the couch and sit down besides Miri, as she and Kazuki had instructed. She laughed joyfully, watching the man game for a couple of minutes as the blonde bustled around in the background, appearing to pack a bag.
“Miri, come on! Time to go.”
“Oh…” Miri frowned, before she scrambled into your lap. “Will you still be here when I get back, kitty? I want to hang out with you more!”
“Yes, Miri…” Kazuki hesitates before he says your new name, apparently, “kitty will be. Can you go get your coat on?”
“Yay!” Miri squeezes you around the neck, before dashing off towards the front door.
“Okay,” Kazuki stands in front of the TV, trying to divert Rei’s attention from the screen. “I’ll drop Miri off at daycare and then go see Kyu, let him know how things went and if he can get us any information. I’ll bring us back some lunch, okay?”
“Bye.”
You nod.
Kazuki rolls his eyes, before he heads towards the door. Miri declares herself ready and Kazuki puts his shoes on. The door opens and Miri yells, “Bye, Papa Rei! Bye, kitty!”
The door closes.
You stare at the television. Rei was playing some sort of shooting game – you thought that was an odd way to relax after last night. You weren’t sure what you were meant to do now, though. Kazuki had set out his morning, but not yours. You had your routine at the house – serve and clear breakfast, wash the dishes, make the beds, do the laundry, sweep and scrub the floors… Though, what you really wanted to do at this moment if anyone was to ask was use the facilities, but you weren’t sure what the deal was here. When you were on your own doing your chores you could visit whenever, but if you were with him, you were expected to remain there - head bowed, awaiting instructions. Was Rei the same? You shuffled subtly in your position, trying to relieve the pressure on your bladder somewhat. You hoped he wouldn’t notice but, due to his profession and upbringing, he was acutely aware of his surroundings at all times.
“What’s the matter, kitty?”
You freeze and sit poker straight, maybe you’d annoyed him with your movements, distracted him from his game, made him lose…
He pauses the game and leans forward, sliding one of Miri’s pieces of paper towards him and another crayon.
“Can you write it down?”
You bite your lip and pick up the crayon, your stupid hand shaking again. Please may I go to the bathroom?
Rei blinks as he reads it, as if making sure he's read it correctly. “Sure. You don’t need to ask permission.” He unpauses his game and continues button mashing. You exhale, getting up to your feet, bracing yourself for it being a trick. He’d loved changing the rules to keep you on your toes, after all.
Nothing comes as you take a step - no harsh word, no fist or kick - followed by another in the direction of where Kazuki had shown you last night. As you enter and turn to close and lock the door, you can see Rei is still engrossed in his game.
After completing your business, you wash your hands thoroughly in the sink and look at yourself in the mirror. Your face is pale and your braids are messed up. You want to re-do them but you don’t want to seem like you’re taking too long in here – what if there’s a time limit? You tuck in a few loose strands before unlocking the door. Rei’s game play continues and you beeline it back to the couch, sitting exactly where you’d been before and watch.
Your mind starts to wonder – what was going to happen? Were you going to serve these two now? Is that how it worked in the criminal word – kill whoever and their property gets passed on to you? But that didn’t make sense, earlier Kazuki had said you were a guest, right?
“Here, kitty,” Rei says softly, interrupting your thoughts as he presses a controller in your hands. “You can be player two.” He’s switched the game when you were staring into space – Morio Kart now flashes on the screen. You’d seen it years ago but never played. There were no games consoles growing up – you hadn’t even had a television towards the end. Everything had been sold off to try and alleviate your father’s debts.
“Have you played before?” You shook your head. “You steer using the joystick, press this one to accelerate, this one to drift, and this one to throw stuff.” He points to the buttons one by one and you burn it into memory at once. It’s important to remember instructions.
--
The next few days are odd. Kazuki said Kyu - a business associate of theirs? - was doing his best to work out your past, but to let him know if you recalled anything that might point them in the right direction, however vague it might be but you couldn't even provide a city name. The new routine would consist of breakfast, Kazuki finally relenting in letting you help with dishes whilst he took Miri to daycare, you’d then sit with Rei, occasionally acting as player two, have lunch, fold some laundry with Kazuki, one of them would collect Miri and you’d colour or play something with her in the evening before dinner.
Tonight, things in the household are tense. Kazuki is at his wit’s end, arguing with a disengaged Rei – you’re not quite sure what about but you wanted to keep out of eyeline. Being around raised voices had never ended well for you. You’re at the top of the stairs after you’d taken up the load of laundry you’d folded with the blonde earlier while he was distracted in the dispute, and from your elevated position you can see Miri reaching for the pan of boiling hot water on the stove and your heart stops. You can’t make it down in time to physically stop her and Kazuki and Rei aren’t going to see in time...
You lean over the edge and open your mouth, “M-M-M-Miri, n-no!”
All eyes snap to you at that point - Miri’s included, thankfully, and she stops. You slapped your hand across your mouth, feeling bile rise up in your throat. Your voice sounds so foreign and wrong and you shouldn’t have done that. No, no, no…
Kazuki’s eyes move to Miri and he sees the little girl 's hand hovering centimetres away from the hot pan. “Miri, don’t touch that!” He roars, and she snatches her hand away but continues to stare up at you, along with Rei.
“Kitty spoke!”
“She did,” Rei agreed, and you bite your lip hard. Idiot.
Kazuki had made his way over to the hob, turning off the heat and pushing the pan to the back. Dinner would have to wait. “Miri, I’ve told you a dozen times, you can’t be playing around here. You can get really hurt.”
“But, Papa Kazuki,” she tugs at his trouser leg, “kitty said my name!”
You dart down the stairs, bowing your head over and over apologetically. Your eyes are brimming with tears. It wasn’t your place to discipline the girl, of course it wasn’t…
“She did, didn’t she?” Kazuki replied warmly, before balking when he saw your face. “Oh, hey! No, no, don’t cry! There’s nothing to cry about, we’re not mad. We’re glad to hear you speak, honestly. Aren’t we, Rei?”
Miri is now at your arm, pulling at it. “Say it again! Say it again!”
“Can you?” Rei asks, sounding curious.
“Please!” Miri squeals.
You swallow, looking at all their hopeful faces. It was an order, wasn’t it? “M-M-M-Miri.” You oblige, before ducking your head again.
Miri laughs, tugging at your arm with renewed vigor. “Now say my papas’ names!”
“Miri…” Kazuki warns. “Kitty can speak when she wants and say what she wants, okay? She’s not a performer for you.”
“But I like hearing her voice!”
“Yes, we do too”, he stressed, meeting your eyes at that point, “but she can take it at her own pace.”
There is a lull in conversation – everyone’s eyes are still on you and you hate it. Thankfully, Miri’s stomach rumbles loudly.
“Papa, I’m hungry!”
“Right, dinner!” Kazuki returns to the hob and starts bustling around the kitchen, forgetting about his argument from Rei a few moments before. You’re thankful for the intervention, the distraction and you duck into the bathroom to catch your breath.
--
Kazuki has taken Miri up to bed and it’s just you and Rei on the couch. He’s gaming as usual, but he has the volume turned down low.
“You can say my name, if you’d like.” He mumbles.
You look at him, unsure. “I’d like to hear you say it, but you don’t have to. I think you’re scared of someone thinking you’ve said the wrong thing, but you should be able to say whatever you feel. Since you already said Miri’s, maybe my name would be easy to say next, to ease you into it.”
His eyes have never left the screen as he speaks. A few moments of silence follow before you squeeze your eyes shut, taking a deep breath. “H-hi, R-R-Rei.”
You open one eye and look over. “Hi.” He replies back, a small smile on his face.
Part two now here.

Another little Buddy Daddies Fic because I can’t be normal about liking things
Miri’s Mistletoe Trap
Synopsis: Kazuki and Rei kiss for the first time when Miri tricks them into standing under mistletoe together.
Word Count: 1816
Warnings: None. Very vague spoilers.
Other tags: FLUFFY AS HELL, Kazurei, first kiss, mutual pining, sort of confession.
(Also, I don’t know if kissing under mistletoe is a thing in Japan, I just thought this idea was cute)
It was a cold evening in February. Kazuki was in the kitchen rolling out cookie dough while Rei and Miri were snuggled up on the couch under a blanket playing Morio Kart. Miri cheered as the race finished, causing Kazuki to look up and smile.
It had been a few months since they made their dramatic departure from the organization, and Kazuki and Rei were happier than they had ever been. Of course, they had their fair share of challenges to overcome, but every time Kazuki noticed a little domestic moment like this, he was reminded about how all of that was worth it.
“Papa? Can I have some water?” Miri asked.
“Of course sweetie, Rei, could you grab it?” Kazuki said, holding up his hands to show they were caked in flour and cookie dough.
Rei nodded and tousled Miri’s hair playfully before getting up. He grabbed a plastic cup from the cabinet and went to stand next to Kazuki at the sink when Miri jumped up and yelled triumphantly.
“HA I got you!” She squealed, pointing at her fathers. Kazuki and Rei both jumped slightly in surprise.
“Miri, what are you talking about?” Kazuki asked, wiping his hands off on a kitchen towel. She continued giggling for a moment before pointing above their heads.
“You fell right into my trap!” She said, proud of herself. Kazuki and Rei glanced at each other in silent confusion before looking up to see what she was pointing at. Kazuki immediately became visibly flustered while Rei just continued to look up blankly at the red and green flower taped to their ceiling.
“Miri! What the- How did you even get up there?” Kazuki said, trying to keep his cool.
“Uncle Kyu helped me earlier when you were doing errands!” She said, causing Kazuki to curse under his breath. He was so going to beat Kyu’s ass for this later.
“I don’t get it.” Rei said flatly.
“Hinata told me that when you stand under mistletoe you have to kiss!”
“Mistletoe?“ Rei mumbled, still confused.
“Miri, first of all! You never have to kiss anyone if you don’t want to. Ever. In any situation. Second. I’m pretty sure Mistletoe is only a Christmas thing” Kazuki took a deep breath before continuing. “Why do you want us to kiss?”
“Because I love both my papa's so much and I want you to love each other and people who love each other kiss” she said, her voice getting a little quiet and dreamy. “Like when they find true love's kiss at the end of the movie” Miri had been on a princess movie kick recently, and they all seemed to end the exact same way, with them finding their true love and sharing a kiss before riding off into the sunset.
“Cute.” Rei said quietly. Kazuki had to take a moment to compose himself over how adorable his daughter was.
“Miri, Papa Rei and I do love each other, we just…don’t kiss.” Kazuki explained gently.
“But Why not?” Miri pouted. Kazuki opened his mouth to respond, but genuinely couldn’t come up with an honest answer.
“No reason why we can’t” Rei surprisingly spoke first. Kazuki’s head whipped around to him.
“What?!” Kazuki desperately tried to read Rei’s face, but was coming up empty as his own mind raced with confusion, fear, and hope.
“I can’t think of a reason. Can you?” He said with a shrug. “It’s not like it’d kill us.” Rei said it casually, but Kazuki was reeling.
“Yeah but—“
“Pleeeeeeeaaaaaassseee” Miri pleaded, interrupting Kazuki. He looked back to her and, seeing the cute little pouty face she was making, melted.
“Alright alright you win.” Kazuki threw his arms up in the air. Rei nodded and took a step closer.
Before Kazuki could lose his nerve, he grabbed Rei’s shoulders. Giving Rei one last chance to back out if he was uncomfortable, Kazuki closed the distance and quickly leaned in.
The intention was just a quick peck, but once Kazuki felt Rei’s lips pressed against his own, he found that he didn’t want to pull away.
“Yay! I can’t wait to tell Uncle Kyu!” Miri cheered, causing Rei and Kazuki to pull apart. Miri ran back down the hallway to her room, giggling that her plan worked.
“Miri! No Running in the House!” Kazuki called down the hallway, shaking his head. When he turned back to Rei he noticed that his partner had been staring at him this whole time, his steel gray eyes slightly wide. A moment of tense stillness passed between them.
“Man. Kyu is never gonna let us hear the end of it” Kazuki finally said with a strained chuckle.
“That’s fine.” Rei said quietly, still staring Kazuki down. Maybe Kazuki was imagining it, but he could swear he could see the slightest pink shadow on Rei’s cheeks. They were still standing close together.
“Makes sense that my first kiss would be with you.” He finally mumbled.
“Wait! You’ve never-?!” Kazuki stopped himself. Rei didn’t exactly have a normal upbringing, even by (former) hitman standards, and was never allowed to have any attachments, so of course Rei had never kissed anyone. Kazuki chastised himself for not connecting the dots on that sooner.
“Sorry—if I had known that was your first kiss, I would have done a better job” Kazuki joked, trying to ease the tension.
“It was…nice…” Rei said, a softness in his voice. Kazuki felt his face get even more warm.
“Yeah?”
“It was soft. And warm.” Rei’s mouth tipped upward to an ever so slight smile that caused Kazuki's heart to hammer in his chest. “It was nice” Rei repeated
“Well, I’m glad you liked it. But just know I can do better than that.” Kazuki blurted out without thinking.
“How?” Rei asked. Kazuki looked at his partner, finding the genuine curiosity in his eyes incredibly endearing. He decided to take the leap.
“Want me to show you?” Kazuki asked. Rei tensed for a moment, blinking as he processed Kazuki's question, before giving a small nod.
Kazuki moved one hand to cup Rei’s cheek and leaned in, this time slower and more deliberately. He pressed his lips to Rei's. Kazuki lingered in the kiss for a moment, relishing it. He had kissed a fair number of people before, and had even been in love, but this felt different. It just felt right.
Even though Kazuki didn’t want it to end, he also didn’t want to overwhelm Rei. He reluctantly started to pull back. However, before he could, he felt Rei’s hands gripping the front of his shirt to pull him back in. He sighed against Kazuki’s lips at the added pressure, sending shivers down Kazuki’s spine.
Kazuki couldn’t believe this was happening. That Rei didn’t want this to stop either. Of course, the thought of kissing Rei and exploring that side of their relationship had crossed Kazuki’s mind. They were living together and raising a child together after all, so it was kind of hard to not consider the possibility. But Kazuki didn’t want to overcomplicate things more, and resigned himself to sitting on those feelings so that he didn’t ruin what they had.
Admittedly, those thoughts had been getting harder and harder to ignore lately. Sure, he was perfectly happy with their situation before, but he’d be lying if he said he had never fantasized about this moment.
He moved the hand on Rei’s face to the back of his head, fingers tangling with his hair as his other hand rested on Rei’s waist. He pulled Rei towards him, trying to deepen the kiss even more. Rei let go of Kazuki’s shirt and wrapped his arms around his neck. They clung to each other for dear life as their lips met again and again.
Though neither of them wanted to stop, eventually they had to pull back to catch their breath. When they did, they stayed holding each other, foreheads pressed together.
“You’re right. That was better” Rei said matter of factly, causing Kazuki to chuckle.
“Told ya.”
Rei gave a quiet laugh. Kazuki smiled. Ever since Miri came into their lives, Rei had started to smile and laugh a bit more, and every time it happened Kazuki’s heart felt warm.
“To be honest. I’ve thought about doing that for a while.” Kazuki admitted, his voice barely audible. Rei stayed holding Kazuki but pulled back slightly to look at his face.
“Why didn’t you?” He asked in a serious tone. Now that Kazuki could see his face he could see just how much his partner was blushing too.
“I mean…I don’t know…I didn’t want to scare you off…I wasn’t sure if you felt that way about me” He stammered. Rei stared at Kazuki in disbelief for a second before cracking a smile.
“You realize we have a kid together and are basically married right?” Rei teased.
“Hey! I don’t know, we didn’t exactly have a kid the normal way and—“
“I sleep in the same bed as you”
“Okay but…wait…I could ask you the same question” Kazuki said, mad at himself that he had probably (definitely) missed some signals.
“I didn’t know how to initiate it” Rei shrugged. “Like I said, I’ve never done this before”
“Huh. Fair enough” Kazuki said after a moment.
“At least Miri was smart enough to figure it out for the both of us”
“Yeah…I can’t believe we fell into a trap made by a five year old.” Kazuki chuckled.
“She’s smart” Rei repeated, the corners of his mouth tipping back up into a small smile. “Must be those hitman genetics at work” He added, causing Kazuki’s face to scrunch up in playful annoyance.
“One time! I said that one time! You’re never gonna let that go are you?” Kazuki sighed.
“Nope.” Rei said, leaning forward to plant a cautious but sweet kiss on Kazuki’s cheek. “And it was more than one time.” He whispered in Kazuki’s ear.
Before Kazuki could retort, they heard the little pitter patter of Miri’s feet coming back towards them. They reluctantly separated as she turned the corner, holding a piece of paper.
“Look!” She said excitedly. Instead of just picking the paper up, Rei chose to hoist Miri up with his good arm. Once she was sitting comfortably on his hip, he took the drawing from her and examined it.
“Heh.” Rei chuckled, flipping the paper around to show to Kazuki. It was a crayon drawing of Rei and Kazuki as stick figures, kissing under mistletoe. On top of the drawing Miri had written “Phase 4: Kiss!” Implying she had drawn out the other steps of her plan.
“She’s our daughter alright.” Rei said with a mixture of amusement and pride. Kazuki laughed and wrapped his arms around Rei and Miri.
“She sure is…Though she fell into her own trap!” He said, giving Miri a big kiss on the cheek. Rei followed, giving Miri a kiss on the forehead and Kazuki a quick peck on the cheek. Miri giggled again, music to both of their ears.

Snow muffles everything. It's early morning, Miri still sleeps soundly in her room, neatly tugged in a thick blanket. Her mouth probably opened wide, a trickle of saliva going down her cheek. Even with a window ajar in the living room, no sound comes from the outside. Everything's quiet except for hissing of a pan in the kitchen.
Rei tries to flip a French toast with one hand, the other still hangs lifeless at his right side. He curses under his nose when another attempt ends with a splash messing up his hoodie and the countertop around him. Kazuki looks at him, his eyes wide and innocent, from his breakfast work.
"Need help?" But no response follows. He puts down the knife he's using. "Come on, it won't harm your pride if you say it. Here, let me."
He walks over, stops close to Rei, just behind him, and gives his assist with his right hand and a fork he found on the side. He counts to three and then they flip the toast together. The mixture bubbles a bit, so Kazuki's hand immediately lands on the cork to lower the heat.
"There you go." His words come out gentle, in a similar tone in which he soothes Miri when she's got a nightmare. They sound just next to Rei's right ear as he focuses his gaze on the pan. He continues while doing that: "Nothing scary, right? It's not like it's impossible to do it with one hand, but some toasts are stubborn. You'll get it."
He stays close for a couple more seconds, but reflects himself and walks away, leaving Rei starring blankly at the spot where just a moment ago he saw a red sleeve substituting the arm he had sacrificed. His heart feels softer, like if it was dipped in a sweet coating, but beats so terribly fast he has to take in a sharper breath.
"Thanks," he murmurs as his features melt in the fond feeling that appeared in his chest, not for the first time.
He thinks back to the conversation with his father, when he brought up all the little things that made him fall in love with his newfound family. He also remembers holding Kazuki up in the kitchen back then, their blood mixing as they supported each other.
I knew my partner would come to save me. And he did.
Yes, if something was on, he knew his partner will indeed come to save him. Even if it's just flipping a toast.

By the Grace of Cat
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inspired by Lily’s official illustration, Rei has a cat. Finally. @bdcharacterweek hosted a week of Kazuki and one of the prompts was cats/dogs. This is super late, I know. (And I am worried that they haven’t updated yet.) Also, for @fluffbruary’s May prompt silk/pillow/pet. Deeply grateful for Andy @clouds-of-peach for her owlish eyes and suggestions.
Half an hour later, the cat’s meowing ceases and so does the noise coming from the child. When Kazuki comes back to check in on them what he sees in front of him tugs at his heartstrings. Rei uses the cat as his pillow while Miri sleeps on his arm, snoring softly, saliva running down her chin. It is a peaceful tableau that he has never thought he would experience after the death of his first wife. The cat stretches her back showing her black-inked belly. An invitation? A dare? Feeling bold in front of a cat he’s only known for a day, Kazuki then kneels down and begins to knead and rub her tummy. In Kazuki’s eyes, Rei, Miri and the animal resemble a closed ensō. A perfection.

Missing scene from the ending of episode 10 Buddy Daddies.
(Mind the spoilers!)
word counts: 465 words
***************
When Kazuki and Rei got home from the handoff, the sight of Miri’s traces around the house was too painful to look at — her soft toys all over living room, her favorite sippy cup on the kitchen counter, crayons and drawings on the floor, a little blanket for when she fell asleep on the couch, haphazardly thrown over the armrest. It was a reminder of what they couldn’t have, of what they were incapable of doing. With head hung low, gaze not meeting Rei’s he said, “I’m gonna head straight to bed.”
There was none of his usual rituals of putting the house together late at night. The only time he could tidy up after Miri was tucked in bed, because cleaning around her was impossible and mornings were reserved for making elaborate breakfasts. He couldn’t do it. Kazuki couldn’t bear looking at Miri’s belongings right now, or having to think of what to do with the rest of her stuff now that she was no longer here, no longer the first person he would greet in the morning as he made them their favorite french toasts, Miri more of a morning person than Rei ever was.
This whole year felt like one massive fever dream.
A sudden dip on the mattress took Kazuki out of the trance, lost in thought for however long it had been as he stared at the ceiling with tears pooling at the corner of his eyes, on the verge of falling. With eyes already acclimatized to the darkness of the room, Rei appeared in his line of vision, lying on his side close enough for Kazuki to feel his body heat.
“Kazuki,” he muttered quietly. “Come here.”
That was all it took for Kazuki to unleash himself upon Rei. He slotted himself in Rei’s arms, which on rare occasions were open and inviting. Kazuki buried his face on the crook of his neck, clutching tight around his chest, before a breathless wail rippled through him, muffled by Rei’s shirt in his mouth. Tears burst out of his eyes and streamed down his face as he breathed through clenched teeth, fighting the pain that was ripping his heart into tiny little shreds. Life was simply too cruel. It took Kazuki’s child away from him not once, but twice.
Rei’s arms came around Kazuki’s neck and shaking shoulders, pulling him close into an embrace. A choked sob escaped Rei as he buried his face in the thick of Kazuki’s hair, as he bunched a fist of Kazuki’s shirt in his hand, the scratch from his nails accidentally digging into Kazuki’s skin was nowhere near as painful as whatever that was eating him alive from the inside.
Who would have thought, one little girl was all it took to break two ruthless hitmen?

Movie night! - A Buddy Daddies Fanfic
(Sorry, I’m not familiar with the proper tagging system for fics, but this contains a heavy make out sesh, so take what you will from that 🤷🏻)
The living room is awash in the soft glow of the tv screen as the credits of the movie they had just watched begin to roll. Miri is asleep in her beanbag chair, limbs sprawled in what looks like an extremely uncomfortable position (does she care? Absolutely not). Kazuki leans back in his seat and rests his left arm on the back of the couch. He peeks over at Rei, who is sitting to his left with a small gap between them. Rei is sitting cross-legged and tightly hugging a large plushie (it’s supposed to be a black cat, but it looks more like a giant egg with cat ears). His chin is resting on the top of the toy, between its pointy ears. “We bought that for Miri, but he loves that thing,” Kazuki thought to himself.
It’s dark in the room, so Kazuki couldn’t quite make out the expression on Rei’s face at first. But after a few minutes of staring, he noticed there was a glint of light reflecting under Rei’s eye. A teasing grin spread across Kazuki’s face as he whispers, “Reiii~ are you crying? It was just a kid’s movie, ya know.”
“…I’m not crying,” Rei whispers back.
“Oh come on~ it’s okay! Let your emotions out!” Kazuki leans in closer to Rei.
“Shut up, I said I’m not crying.” Rei turns his head away and makes a not-so-subtle sniffle noise.
“Heyyy don’t be shy! Come here, I’ll comfort you!” Kazuki scoots closer and pinches the sides of Rei’s abdomen.
“H-hey! What are you doing?! Quit that!” Rei whips around and uses the stuffed animal to push Kazuki away. His whisper wasn’t really a whisper anymore.
“You better be quiet or you’ll wake Miri!” Kazuki continues to pinch and tickle random spots on Rei’s stomach and sides as Rei squirms in place.
“It’s your fault if she wakes up!” Rei continues to struggle, pushing the plush toy into Kazuki’s face. It doesn’t work. Kazuki is relentless.
“Kazukiii, plea- hnngGH ah!”
Kazuki immediately stops in his tracks. Rei’s squirming also stops.
“What… was that?!” Kazuki thought to himself.
Rei’s expression turns icy as he tilts his head upward to face Kazuki. His eyes were shooting daggers, but his cheeks were flushed beet red. “…You heard nothing.”
Kazuki about lost his mind right then and there. He had definitely heard something escape from Rei’s lips moments ago. And the look on Rei’s face in this moment lit a fire inside Kazuki.
Kazuki grabs the stuffed toy from Rei’s hands and tosses it behind him. In the same motion, he leans in toward Rei even more, pushing him backward onto the couch cushion.
Kazuki hovers on top of Rei, his right knee nestled in between Rei’s legs, pressed against his groin. Kazuki’s hands are pressed into the couch cushion on each side of Rei’s head as he holds himself in position.
Rei shifts his bewildered gaze up toward Kazuki. He notices the raw desperation in the eyes that stare back at him. Rei suddenly realizes that he’s waiting for Kazuki to make his next move, but it doesn’t come.
“Ah… he’s waiting for me to say this is ok…” Rei contemplated for just a brief moment before finally reaching his hand up to Kazuki’s face. He let his fingers gently graze against Kazuki’s cheek, feeling the slight stubble of facial hair that would be shaved off in the morning. Kazuki’s gaze softens, and he tilts his head into Rei’s touch.
Rei slides his hand behind Kazuki’s ear and firmly grasps the back of his neck, pulling him closer as he lifts himself up to meet Kazuki’s face half way. Rei presses his lips gently against Kazuki’s.
“I guess it makes sense that he’s my first kiss. I hope it feels ok for him…”
In that moment, Kazuki presses his body even closer to Rei and returns the kiss with a sort of gentle forcefulness. He continues to hold himself up with his left arm, but uses his right hand to reach down toward Rei’s hip. He grips tightly, and Rei lets out a soft whimper.
Rei weaves his fingers into Kazuki’s hair and tugs. He feels Kazuki’s tongue slip into his mouth, and can’t help but notice the slight taste of popcorn and cola from earlier. Even still, his face and ears are on fire from the rush of blood, and he wants more. He reaches his other hand up to Kazuki’s back and pulls him as close as they can comfortably get.
Rei only just now notices the placement of Kazuki’s knee, because he realizes that his lower half has started to rhythmically grind against it. Kazuki notices this too, and begins to move his body in a similar motion.
Kazuki lifts his head slightly and gazes upon the sight underneath him. Rei is bleary-eyed and is quietly panting, attempting to catch his breath in this brief moment. Kazuki leans forward yet again, only this time he plants light kisses on Rei’s jawline. As Kazuki works his way down toward Rei’s neck, a thought crosses his mind, “I wanna devour him.”
“Kazuki papa… what’re you doing to Rei papa?”
Both Kazuki and Rei jolt, whipping their heads to cast a glance at the small child who had been sleeping in her beanbag chair a mere six feet away.
“Kazuki papa… don’t fight with Rei papa. He di’n’t mean to burn down the kitchen…” *snoooore*
“…”
“She’s… talking in her sleep?!”
“Hey, what the hell is she dreaming about??”
Kazuki turns his head to face Rei once again. The two of them are still in a very… compromising position. To Kazuki’s surprise, Rei lets out a deep, hushed chuckle. Kazuki then bursts into laughter as well, but quickly buries his face in the crook of Rei’s neck to muffle the sound.
“Huu… That was a close one”
Kazuki’s head pops back up. “I know, right?! We’re such terrible papas! What were we thinking??”
Rei suddenly felt a twinge in his chest. “…Yeah. You’re right, it was a mistake.”
“What? No, I just meant that we need to be more careful next time and make sure Miri isn’t in the same room.”
“…Next time?” Rei’s face and ears are now a bright shade of pink.
Kazuki chuckles, and uses his free hand to cup Rei’s cheek. “There will be a next time, yeah?”
Rei nods.
“Heheh thought so!” Kazuki plants several tiny kisses all over Rei’s face, which causes Rei to squirm around. Eventually Kazuki stops and pulls Rei to an upright position with him. “Alright, let’s get the kid to bed.”
“Okay”
“Where’re you sleeping? Bathtub or my bed?”
“….Bathtub.”
“What?! What’s wrong with sleeping next to me??”
“Kidding,” Rei says, with an awkward smile.
“Oh you’re a jerk, you know that? Well now I don’t wanna share my bed with you!”
“Wait, why?”
And the bickering continues…

honestly not sure how i ended up here
i mean, why not resurrect a barely used, decade-old writing blog for the anime show buddy daddies?
this is what happens when a formerly depressed human turned queer therapist-in-training decides to watch 2 hitmen and a baby as an escape during the last semester of graduate school: i end up with the kind of brainrot that leads me to spiral about the lasting impact of trauma on these fictional characters, and eventually think “what’s the deal with rei suwa’s mother?” then the next thing i know i’m accidentally spending the majority of my spring break writing a rambling rei character study about healing and growth and found family that i will almost definitely not have time to finish (even though i desperately want to lmao).
so here’s one of the scenes that i did manage to finish because i’m so dang soft for this little family that it’s borderline unhealthy:
He sleeps more peacefully on the nights when Miri demands that the three of them share a bed. She’s learned how to time it for moments when they’re both exhausted and feeling even more incapable than usual of saying no to her.
Rei likes it more than he’s willing to admit. Miri tosses and turns, her little feet digging into tender organs and her arms often splayed wide over both of their faces, but when she finally settles it’s almost always with Rei. Tiny hands clinging to his shirt or his hair, small body curled into his torso. The warmth of her thaws something deep inside Rei, and he never thinks twice about putting a protective arm over her, curving his own body back around hers like a shield. Behind him, Kazuki radiates a similar heat - reminding Rei of his constant, steady presence.
Rei had had glimpses of reprieve from the brutality of life as the Suwa heir scattered throughout his childhood. They were few and far between, and always fleeting: the soothing touch of his mother’s hand, the sound of her voice lulling him to sleep with a story. It took Rei a while to understand why she wouldn’t - or rather, couldn’t - save him from the boss, but he still felt bitter about it for a long time after. However, since Kazuki and Miri’s entrance into his life, those small moments of safety and love that she could manage to offer have begun to filter back into Rei’s memory.
She had come to him during some of those tormented nights as a kid, Rei remembers. When she could, when the boss was away on business and not there to see her doing what he viewed as her coddling him. She would sneak through the shadows to go unnoticed by the underlings the boss had tasked with protecting his bloodline in his absence and slip into Rei’s room. Sometimes she would find him already in tears, face pressed into his pillow to muffle the sound. Sometimes he would jerk awake with a scream in his throat to find her already sitting at the foot of his bed. She wouldn’t usually say anything - what was there to say? - but she would draw his head into her lap and thread her fingers through his hair, scratching gently at his scalp until he drifted back into a less fretful sleep.
Of course, there were also reasons why Rei chose most nights to sleep in a cold bathtub with little, if any, comforts. He was telling Miri the truth when he said it was in case of an ambush, but not being able to sleep too deeply also ensured that he didn’t dream. Being sandwiched between the comforting warmth of Miri and Kazuki’s sleeping bodies, feeling safe enough to drift off into a deep sleep - some nights that didn’t end well for Rei. Thankfully, on many of those nights he had only twitched awake with a sharp gasp, barely disturbing Miri - who would mutter something about Papa Rei and sleep before settling again.
But on this night Rei finds himself trapped in a particularly awful nightmare. It’s a stomach-turning combination of real memories and his worst fears: a ten year old version of himself on his knees, begging and screaming while his father orders the murder of his family; watching helplessly as that dead-eyed creep Ogino levels a gun at Miri’s precious head, Kazuki already dead beside her.
He wakes violently - sitting up with a shout and flinging his body toward the bedside drawer where he knows Kazuki keeps a disassembled Glock. He hears Miri’s terrified scream and reacts without thinking. Jumping into a crouch on the bed, assembling the gun with smooth, practiced motions as he does, and pointing it toward the nearest source of movement.
“Rei!” Kazuki yells. His hands are thrown over his head, and he looks so frightened that it cuts through the haze of Rei’s panic like a knife. The gun lowers as his arms go limp, and Kazuki snatches it out of his reach, ejects the magazine before tucking it into the back waistband of his pajama bottoms. He starts to reach for Rei but pauses when Miri explodes into tears from the other side of the bed.
“Miri!”
Kazuki scoops her into his arms as Rei deflates further, all of the tension draining out of his body and replaced by concern at the sound of Miri’s hiccuping sobs. Each one feels like something sharp stabbing into his ribcage. He reaches for her without thinking. She cries even louder, and Rei snatches his hand back like he’s been burned. Kazuki looks wretched, torn between who to comfort.
“Just give her a minute,” he says. He gives Rei a meaningful look and stands with Miri in his arms. “We’ll be right back.”
The door clicks shut behind them, and Rei drops his head into his hands. He can hear the muffled sounds of Miri crying and Kazuki’s attempts to soothe her getting further away as they pad downstairs. Rei thinks they’re probably heading to the kitchen. The one foolproof way of getting Miri to calm down is usually food. They’re alike in that way, Rei observes distantly, then groans to himself.
He feels fucking terrible.
Why did he think he could do something like this right? A father is the person who saves you; that’s what Miri said in the park on the day when everything changed between them. That’s when he became her Papa Rei. He had heard those distressed cries, her pleas for him, as he stood waffling behind a tree and knew all at once that he couldn’t not protect her.
But now he’s the reason she feels afraid. He’s too fucked up to ever protect anyone. It’s a miracle he survived this long (and, if he’s being totally honest with himself, he knows that miracle is named Kazuki). He drags his fingers through his hair, gripping it at the base of his skull, and lets out a frustrated sigh. Really, it was only a matter of time before Miri realized what a piece of trash her Papa Rei actually is, how incapable he is at everything except violence and killing. She was always going to end up afraid of him, just like he was of his father.
Rei hears the sound of the refrigerator door opening downstairs, then Kazuki’s quiet voice. Miri’s higher pitched tone follows. Sure enough, she sounds calmed by the promise of yummy food. She sniffles occasionally, but seems to not be crying anymore. Rei leans back against the wall with his knees pulled up and his arms dangling loosely over them. He drifts in and out of time for a while, and eventually becomes aware of Kazuki sitting in front of him. Rei blinks a few times to bring him into focus.
“Hey,” Kazuki says. Something about his expression looks careful, but there’s no pity there. “You okay?”
Rei shrugs. It’s as honest as he can let himself be.
Kazuki nods like he understands. “Do you want to join us?”
Rei freezes and casts a nervous glance in the direction of the stairs.
“Does she?”
“Of course she does,” Kazuki assures him. “You scared her, but she’s okay now. She’s asking about you, and I think she’d feel better if you came down too.”
Rei draws in a deep breath and nods. He follows Kazuki out of the bedroom and down the staircase. Miri is sitting at the table, her short legs swinging while she colors. The tip of her tongue pokes out of the corner of her mouth in concentration, and there is an empty plate and cup by her elbow. She looks up at the sound of their footsteps.
“Papa Rei, come sit,” she says. She doesn’t bounce out of her chair and into his arms like part of him had secretly hoped, but she doesn’t turn away from him either. She still trusts him, Rei thinks, and relief floods through his chest. He sits next to her, careful to give her enough space to come to him when she’s ready. She points to her drawing. “It’s you.”
A black-haired stick figure in a blue hoodie sits above a rectangle filled with colorful circles and blobs. Rei feels his throat tighten. Despite his efforts, his voice comes out a little raspy when he speaks.
“This is me?”
Miri nods and jabs a finger toward the paper again.
“Papa Kazuki said that sometimes you have scary dreams and it makes you sad.” Rei glances over at Kazuki, who gives him a sheepish shrug. “And I said we should make you all of your favorite food because that makes you happy, but Papa Kazuki said we don’t have all the ingre-dents, plus,” she pauses for an inhale and pitches her voice lower to imitate Kazuki, “’it’s the middle of the night.’ So I thought I would draw a picture of you with your favorite foods instead to make you happy. Do you like it?”
Rei touches the tips of his fingers to the drawing, feeling bits of waxy crayon shavings cling to them.
“I do,” he says. Miri smiles at him, and Rei can’t help himself. “Miri, I’m sorry that I scared you.”
Miri studies his face for a few long moments, and Rei gets the sense not for the first time that she is wise beyond her years. Without a word, she climbs over from her chair into Rei’s lap. He winces when her sharp elbow digs into his stomach and adjusts his posture so that they fit more comfortably. Once she’s settled, Miri looks up into his eyes with a serious expression and gestures for him to come closer.
Rei does. He would do anything for her.
“Sometimes I feel scared and sad, too,” she whispers into his ear.
Rei huffs a surprised exhale, and brings his arms around her without a second thought. She hugs him back for a second and then laughs a little.
“Papa Kazuki!” she says. Rei looks over to see Kazuki quickly swiping at his eyes. Miri pulls back and turns that serious expression on Rei once more. “He needs a hug too.”
Rei nods and stands with Miri. As they approach Kazuki, Miri stretches out her little arms and grabs him by the neck to pull him closer without trying to crawl out of Rei’s grasp. Rei startles for a moment. He thought that Miri was planning to give Kazuki a hug of her own, not that she meant for all of them to hug.
Kazuki appears to be realizing the same thing. He darts that familiar helpless, “oh well, what else can we to do” look that usually accompanies Miri demanding something they know will make her happy, and places an arm over each of their shoulders. Miri giggles and squirms as Kazuki presses exaggerated kisses to her cheeks and hair. Rei’s arms are full trying to keep the wiggling toddler from falling to the floor, so all he can really do is lean into Kazuki’s solid torso until the two of them are finished. Before Kazuki releases them, he gives Rei a quick but firm squeeze.

By the time you come to, your eyesight is filled with the bright lights of the TV screen.
It’s foreign. It’s different. It just doesn’t seem real in this moment. But yet, it is.
You let out a soft sound- groaning lightly at the agony of being awoken by such an offensive sight from such a peaceful slumber. It’s harsh, beaming, bright, colorful, and all sorts of things that you can’t help but hate in this tired, tired moment of yours. But no matter how hard you squeeze your eyes shut and try to pretend it doesn’t exist, some of that light slips through the cracks. And suddenly, your eyesight is adjusting. Even though you really rather it didn’t.
Alas, it’s out of your control. And all too soon, you find that despite the darkness surrounding the open windows of the apartment contrasting the lights from the TV screen, you can see clearly once again. Your mind still moves a bit slowly. You’re sleepy and you’re warm and you’re content with this feeling. As you move to turn your head to take in the rest of the room, you still feel the lull of tiredness in your brain. But it eases up as you look from spot to spot- taking in all that you see. The tray of half-eaten snacks on the coffee table. The pile of dirty pots and pans in the kitchen, just out of sight. A mess of cables where phones and consoles and controllers fight to be plugged in for power. The line of stuffed animals angled to view the TV screen. And at the center of it all a passed-out Miri.
Wrapped in a blanket pile on the ground, head on a pillow, and completely conked out with a tiny snack wrapper in her hand.
Once your eyes land on her, the memories of tonight come back to you oh-so-clearly. You were called over for a babysitting gig while the boys were away at work. And that turned into being convinced that you should stay for dinner since Miri was having so much fun…and there was nothing in your fridge at home. And one thing led to another, and suddenly, it’s a game tournament between three of you while the cooking takes place. But after a little bit more fun, it’s time for dinner. But after dinner, there comes more cries of how Miri doesn’t want you to go- how she doesn’t want the fun to end. And so, you found yourself sitting down on the couch once more. But this time, you’re wrapped in blankets. You’re swaddled with care. You’re sitting between two very handsome men…
 “Um, Rei…? Kazuki...?”
…who just can’t seem to let you go.
At the sound of your soft murmur, you feel Rei shift. You’re aware he’s a light sleeper- you’ve been told it comes with his territory. Though you didn’t expect him to be woken up by such a quiet whisper. One so far away from his ears, no less. Right now, he’s half laid across the sofa with his head on your lap and his arms wrapped around your thigh. His long legs hang over the side of the couch air while the rest of his body sinks into the plush surface. You can’t help but think to yourself that this position can’t be comfortable. But when you take the chance and give a soft whisper of his name again, you’re met with a familiar, low tone of voice that never fails to capture your attention.
 “Go back to sleep already…”
For a split second, his comment surprises you. It’s followed by a rustle of him moving beneath his own blanket, before curling into you and your body even tighter than before. Your breath hitches at his reaction. You’re not used to seeing Rei this affectionate. Hell, you’re not used to seeing Rei this open or touchy or even comfortable with another person before. Even Miri still has to initiate all her cuddles. So you decided that you had to do it- you had to take the chance. But Rei barely reacts to the feels of your hand reaching out and curling through his messy bangs. No, he welcomes it as he turns a little more into your grasp and silently urges you to keep combing through his hair as he melts into your lap once more.
Though despite how floored you are at the rare sight before you, a quick look to the clock tells you that it’s way after the young girl’s bedtime. And something needs to be addressed:
“Someone needs to put Miri to bed.” You whisper to him. Half of you hopes that this will be enough for him to let you go- let you stand and grab her so she can be tucked in nice and proper and get a good night’s rest. But the other half of you? “And I need to go home too. It’s after midnight.”
The other half of you is wondering why you decided to open your mouth and say something like that in the first place. But fortunately for you- there’s already an invitation waiting for you. And this time, it’s coming from a voice you were a little more sure was still fast asleep by your side.
“Stay the night,” Kazuki tells you. “I’ll get her to bed soon. So stay with us, okay?”
His voice sounds heavy, and his breath feels warm against your skin. His head is still buried in your neck, and the arm slung around your shoulder squeezes you once. Twice, as if to say he’s not letting you go without a fight. And with that, the offer becomes tempting. A sweet deal. Spending time with your favorite boys and their adorable little girl. But the rational, adult in you is telling you how bad of an idea this is. It’s reminding you how you haven’t checked your calendar to see if you’re on the clock tomorrow. It’s reminding you how you haven’t set an alarm for when to wake up. It’s reminding you that you probably have errands to run or phone calls to make or things to remember or-
The arm around your neck shifts. Though you aren’t quite aware of its movement or its purpose until the hand it’s attached to is suddenly under your chin. Titling your head to the side and then up, up, up until there’s more than enough space for Kazuki to make his move. More than enough room for soft lips to find their home against your jugular- delivering soft, convincing kisses to your skin. As if he knew you were going to be a flight risk all along.
As if he knew you were going to be the most reluctant flight risk all along.
“Rei,” Kazuki calls quietly in between kisses. The blonde doesn’t seem to care how your face warms at each contact. He doesn’t seem to care how your breathing has changed or how your heartbeat has increased with every single peck to your skin. He doesn’t even seem to care that he’s kissing your neck all soft and sweet like as his partner and closest friend curl up on your lap without a single care in the world. But as it turns out…he doesn’t have a good reason to. “Go set up in my room. I’ll join you guys as soon as I’m done with Miri.”
And with that, Kazuki sheds his own blanket and pulls away from you. When he stands to his full height and stretches, your eyes catch his amber-colored ones for a moment. And you like to think that the knowing smile he flashes you isn’t because of your flustered, dazed, and a little bit disappointed expression is all too easy to see as it bathes in the light of the TV. But you’re not left in that state for long. Because all too soon, Rei is lifting himself up and out of your lap as well. He shares a nod with his partner as the two pass each other. Miri resting on Kazuki’s side as the blonde picks her up and takes her to her room. And you, now standing on your own two shaky feet as Rei slings an arm around your waist and pulls you into his side.
Kazuki disappears with Miri as Rei busies himself with turning off the TV and grabbing the three phones left on the ground. He hands one of them to you, and you thank him quietly as you slide your device into your pocket. Your good manners are rewarded with the sight of Rei ducking his head down by your should neck and the feeling of his lips delivering a tiny peck to your shoulder. And then another one. And another one. And then one more, for good measure.
At this point, your head is swimming. As much as you hate it, you can’t help but tell yourself that this is a dream. That you’re dreaming. The nicest, prettiest, most desirable dream. Because the boys you know would never give this much attention. Never give you still much affection even though you wish for them to. But Rei’s hands on your waist, as he guides you through the apartment, feel so real. And the bed you find yourself laying on after a blur of emotions and movement throughout the apartment feels so real too. Almost as real as the loose hoodie that smells just like Rei covering your torso. Almost as real as the big pair of shorts you were dressed in that you swore you’d seen on Kazuki before. But it can’t be real. It can’t be.
There’s no way that the two men you’ve fallen so deeply for have just dressed you up in their clothes just to crawl under the covers and fall asleep by your side once more. No way.
It’s foreign. It’s different. It just doesn’t seem real in this moment. But it’s so desirable. It’s so tempting.
 It’s so real.
Because when all is said and done, Rei’s bangs are now tickling your forehead as he dozes off in front of you, his nose brushing just against yours. Because when all is said and done, Kazuki’s arm is now slug over your side as his breath tickles your neck, and he enters his own dreamland just behind you.
Because when all is said and done?
You’re in between two sleepy boys who can’t help but dream the same dreams that you would too.

Kitty (part 2)
Pairings: Rei x reader Buddy Daddies Check out part one here.
Kyu has come up blank on finding out your real name, but he does think he’s confirmed a possible date you were taken into ‘service’ - a polite way of saying they took you for payment of your father’s debts. The conclusion was drawn from some other intelligence he had in his possession. Turns out your abductor had been on the organization’s radar for a few years before he became the prime target of a hit, and on a USB stick from a previous reconnaissance job about one of his associates Kyu had found a photograph of you. You were stood behind the target as he sat at a table, laughing heartily with your abductor. You were in that stupid maid outfit, your face adorned with a split lip and a nasty-looking black eye. You couldn’t say you remembered that one in particular – there had been a fair few until you decided it was best to keep your mouth shut. He no longer had a reason to hit you in the face if you weren’t talking back, but the rest of your body was free game. The real kick in the stomach was that the date of the photograph was from over two years ago. Kyu had used that information to look at missing persons reports a year either side of the date, but had come up empty. He’d suggested to Kazuki that maybe you weren’t from the city, maybe you’d be based rurally and so it had just been your father and you. All you had at the back of your mind was that maybe no-one from your old life even missed you enough to ever mention it. No wonder you couldn’t remember any names of your supposed family, friends or acquaintances – even what you’d do before you were in the house. Maybe your life in service was better than the one where you were free.
You don’t know how to feel when you hear it has been over two years. Your concept of time is completely warped. How long exactly did you put up a fight for in the end? It’s a blur of screaming and beatings, and then silence, beatings and house chores. Maybe you didn’t fight long enough or hard enough. Time passed and when you realized he wasn’t going to kill you, despite all of the numerous threats to do so, you’d just accepted this was going to be your life now? Clean, serve, clean, wash, serve, clean and sleep in a closet, with his hands grabbing you throughout the day, always leaving a bruise. Rinse and repeat. Maybe you should’ve realized time passing though. For one, your hair had grown longer but you’d kept it braided, wrapping it around your crown to keep it out of the way. At one point you must’ve just not considered what another inch of hair to braid represented in the grand scheme of it all.
After your vow of silence had been broken yesterday to stop Miri dousing herself in hot water, you’d began trying to answer some questions with a couple of words throughout the day. Some might even constitute a full sentence. It still felt so very wrong but there was no backlash, only ever pure delight from Kazuki and Miri when you spoke and what appeared to be an encouraging nod from Rei.
“See, Miri, Rei,” Kazuki comments over dinner that evening, “Kitty eats her vegetables.” He’s been in a bit of a mood that he’s had to serve convenience store hamburg steak again at Miri’s insistence.
You look at your plate compared to theirs – Miri and Rei are devouring everything but their vegetables, whereas you’d focused on those more than anything else. It was all just so colourful and appetizing to you.
“Papa Kazuki, you should make Kitty’s favourite for dinner tomorrow!” Miri bounces up and down in her seat.
“That’s a good idea. What’s your favourite food?” All eyes are on you, waiting for an answer. You put down the chopsticks and take a drink of water – your mouth going dry as you try to think of a response. Favourite?
Thankfully, Rei relieves the heat. “Mine’s ramen.”
“Of course it is,” Kazuki rolls his eyes. “That instant stuff too.”
You’ve had time to think now. “S-s-scraps.”
“Scraps?” Kazuki raises an eyebrow, and then his face sinks in realisation. Rei’s stopped mid-bite and your heart skips a beat. No, no, you’ve phrased that wrong. That’s not the normal way to reply to someone asking you your favourite food, idiot. There was a better way to say that your sustenance had been whatever you’d salvaged off plates or rescued from the top of the bin on really desperate evenings when he dined alone and scraped his plate clean. You bite your lip trying to think of the word that sounded more polite and less depressing.
“S-sorry, no. I-I mean l-l-leftovers.” You pick up your chopsticks again and grasp the broccoli. Surely they can’t ask you more questions if your mouth is full.
“I wanna try leftovers!” Miri exclaims.
“Miri, you and Papa Rei never leave any leftovers… except veggies, so maybe we will have a completely vegetarian meal for a change tomorrow,” he threatens.
Miri wolfs down her vegetables with gusto, one that Rei and Kazuki hadn’t quite seen. “Nuh-uh,” she protests. “You’ll have to make new leftovers.”
You help Kazuki with the dishes after dinner – you like having a task to focus on. It helps your thoughts from spiraling. You’ve been stuck in your head waiting for the catch, because there had to be one. Would two assassins really just take pity on you and take you in, no other motive? You’ve just gone willingly along with them and yes, they’ve let you sleep in a bed and, sure, they feed you and they haven’t hurt you and they have an adorable little girl, but where do you fit into this, whatever this is?
They’re both on the sofa tonight after Miri is tucked up in bed. She insisted that you sit in while Rei read her a bedtime story. He read all the character voices in a deadpan voice, but Miri laughed through the whole thing. Kazuki wanted to watch some romance spy drama on the television – he gave you a very thorough recap before it started. Your brain didn’t absorb much of it, there’s two love triangles going on, and someone’s in a coma but also an evil twin? Rei is gaming on his phone, but he’s holding the device in such a way that you think he’s secretly into the drama as well but doesn’t want to show it. Kazuki is one end of the sofa and Rei the other, and you’re in the middle, feeling sandwiched despite the distance between you three. The drama comes to a close – if anyone were to ask you a single thing about it you wouldn’t have a clue - and Kazuki stretches, getting up from his position. Rei grabs for his games controller. You’re on your feet at the same time and at first you don’t realise you’ve done it – is it a habit, a reflex?
“You good?” The blonde asks, not sure what to make of your movements.
“I-I-I-I…” You trail off, swallowing hard. Cut out the middle. “Q-q-question.”
“You have a question?” Rei translates and you nod.
“Yeah, of course!” Kazuki sits back down, clasping his hands in his lap and looking at you expectantly. You look at your feet - maybe it’ll be easier talking to the floor.
“W-w-what’s to h-happen with m-me n-now?”
“Happen to you?” The blonde repeats.
“Nothing, Kitty.” Rei says, in a matter-of-fact tone. “You’re safe.”
“Yeah! We just wanna help you in whatever way we can. You got dealt a real shitty hand, I won’t lie. And, I mean, we probably should’ve said before that if you want us to drop you off at the police station or a shelter or something…”
“No.” You manage that word firmly, but Kazuki keeps going. “..we can, but we’d obviously need you to promise you wouldn’t give names or tell them what you saw about us…”
“Dude, she said no.” Rei cuts over him.
“Sorry, sorry,” Kazuki raises his hands. “You’re welcome to stay here as long as you like and anything we can do, we will. Right, Rei?”
The dark-haired man nods.
“We know we’re not your typical family but maybe that’s not such a bad thing, and you’d be very welcome to join us if that’s what you desire.” The blonde is back on his feet but looks on the verge of tears.
“Dial it back, Kazuki.”
“Oh,” he rubs the back of his head awkwardly. “I swear Miri’s made me soft.”
“-er.”
“Huh?”
“Soft-er.” Rei clarifies. “We heard you weep when Kitty said good morning.”
“It’s just so nice to see your confidence begin to return…” Kazuki’s eyes are brimming and Rei has a flashback to when he’d offered to make rice balls for the sports day and knows it’s time to intervene. “To think a few days ago you were so terrified to utter a word and… Hey!”
Rei is now dragging the blonde man towards the stairs. “Don’t you have to be up early?”
“Yeah, you’re right… Night, Kitty!”
“G-g-goodnight.” This has turned into much more of a scene than you wanted. Rei slopes back to the sofa now Kazuki is safely on the upper floor and picks up the controller.
“Sorry if he made you feel uncomfortable.”
“Ka-ka-kazu…” You swallow, giving up on the third syllable. “He’s n-nice.”
“Hm.” Rei begins to set up a game. “Want to play?”
You’re tired, in all honesty. All this conversation was draining. “C-can I g-go to bed, p-p-please?”
He looks at you – is it possible he’s frowning even more than usual? “You don’t need to ask permission, Kitty.” You know he’s said it before, as well as Kazuki, but you can’t shake the doubt that there’s going to be one thing that trips you up if you don’t ask. “You can do what you want when you want.”
“B-but it’s your r-r-room.” He’s only been in there when you were downstairs, grabbing a fresh pair of clothes in the morning, but it feels weird to be in what should be his intimate space at night. You’d considered previously if he wasn’t already using the tub that’s where you might’ve resorted to.
“Call it ours.” He turns his attention to the TV. “Sleep well.”
“Night, Rei.” It’s only when you make it up the stairs you realize you made it through those two words without hesitation.
--
Day four - or was it five? You probably shouldn’t keep count - started much as the same as the other days. Kazuki was up early with Miri, serving breakfast. Rei emerged from the tub due to all the racket and whilst Kazuki and Miri headed off to daycare, you had a bath, washing your hair and retreating to Rei’s – no, our? - bedroom to dry it before braiding it as usual, and joined him back downstairs ahead of Kazuki’s return.
“Kitty?” Rei’s voice cuts across your thoughts. You’re both on the couch, he’s paused his game and is looking at you. Kazuki is back, bustling around in the kitchen and you’re not quite sure where your head’s been at. You’re cuddling your knees. You can tell Rei must’ve asked you something and you’ve blanked him as his game is now paused and his attention is focused solely on you.
“S-s-sorry, w-what did you s-say?” You wondered how long it would be until you didn’t feel like you were gonna throw up every time you started a sentence, especially if your stomach was full after one of Kazuki’s – admittedly delicious - meals.
“Do you know your shoe size?”
You looked at your feet. Kazuki had given you a fun pack of socks with cute patterns on them so you could get rid of those stupid thigh highs. That had opened up a new can of worms though - Miri gasping at the healing bruises on your legs that the socks had covered when you were in shorts. Her eyes were wide and tearful as she had asked you what had happened. Kazuki and Rei had looked mildly panicked as to what you were going to say.
“I’m… I’m c-c-clumsy, Miri. I f-fell o-over. Silly.”
“Like me!” She beamed.
“No, Miri, you’re just reckless,” Kazuki rolled his eyes.
Back to the present, you shook your head and the idea of time passing swirled around your head again - it’d been over two years since you’d thought about shoes. “N-no. Sorry.”
“No need to be sorry,” Rei replied.
“Rei’s right.” Kazuki brushed his hands down on his apron. “Well, only one thing for it - to the 398 yen store! We can get you some new clothes too, something you like rather than just Rei’s picks.”
You had, apparently, been working your work through Rei’s wardrobe. Rei told you to take whatever you wanted to wear from his t-shirt drawer but that felt wrong. He’d now taken to getting a t-shirt out for you when he dressed, leaving it on top of the dresser. Kazuki had dug out a pair of black tracksuit bottoms with drawstrings. They’d been too long on the leg but the cuffed bottoms meant you could hoist them up a bit. Today, you were in those, a plain white t-shirt and the black hoodie they’d given you the first day. You’d put on socks that were bright white and had orange slices all over them – they’d made you smile.
“Y-you shouldn’t s-spend your m-m-money on me.” They’d done so much for you already, their clothes were fine. More than fine.
“It’s the household’s money and you’re part of that,” the blonde replied, holding his finger in the air as he so often did when it came to money matters. “I’m sure I’ve got some of those ‘one size fits all’ slippers in the back of my closet. They should do to get us there…” He dashed up the spiral staircase.
“You’ll like the 398 yen store, it has everything.” The game’s unpaused and his fingers fly over the controller buttons.
“A-are you c-coming?”
“Of course. I’d go everyday if Kazuki would let me.”
--
The 398 yen store is overwhelming. Rei wasn’t lying when he said it had everything. They headed straight towards the shoes, Kazuki finding a device that measured your feet and he said the number aloud, a number that you felt your brain should’ve recognized – “Oh, of course I’m that size,” but nothing clicked. Next, it was off to a literal wall of shoes, surrounded by buckets of shoes. Kazuki encouraged you to choose whatever you wanted. It felt a daunting task, there were so many styles and colours – laces, zips, slip-ons. At least the price point was the same for them all…
You possibly stared a bit too long before Rei appeared at your side, pressing a pair of black and white sneakers into your hands. “These look comfy - for walking.”
You nodded and tried them on – they felt odd, but that was probably just because you hadn’t worn shoes in so long more than anything.
After the shoes came the clothes and, you realized, undergarments of all things. You’d slipped those in the cart without much of a fanfare, thankfully, letting them run riot on other items for you. You didn’t really have a style so the cart is a mix with dark and bright colours, representing both their styles and perhaps you’ll find something inbetween.
When you get back to the apartment, Kazuki starts to pull the tags off everything whilst Rei mutters something about the bedroom, ties his hair back upon his head and darts upstairs. Kazuki stares as he does so. “Okay…”
A short while later, Rei emerges and strides down the stairs, releasing his hair and heads to the door to get his shoes on – the two of them had promised to pick up Miri from daycare together this afternoon.
“About time.” Kazuki puts his hands on his hips. “We gotta go. What were you doing up there?” Rei having his hair up only ever meant serious business in his eyes.
“Kitty needs space for her things, so I cleared out a couple of drawers.”
“Y-y-you didn’t h-have to do t-that for me.” But you couldn’t help the smile that crept on your face. Something about having a space that was entirely yours seemed exciting in that moment.
“It’s fine.” There’s a hint of red on his cheeks. “Let’s go.” He pulls on the door handle and leaves without another glance.
“Back soon, Kitty!” Kazuki calls cheerily and follows his partner, leaving you in the silence of the apartment. He catches up with Rei at the lift, his hands in his pockets.
“What was that, Rei?” He’s elbowing him in the side, raising his eyebrows, being an absolute clown. “Clearing drawer space, huh?”
“It’s nothing.” He shrugs. “It was overdue.” But it can’t be nothing, because seeing you smile made his stomach flip in a way he’s not felt before.

“You’re quiet today” Rei observed. Usually when they dropped Miri off in the morning and ate breakfast, Kazuki was much more chatty. It wasn’t uncommon for Kazuki to talk Rei’s ear off about a new recipe he was excited to try for dinner, or about a weird dream he had. Rei didn’t mind, he liked the sound of Kazuki’s voice. But today he was only speaking when directly spoken too, and responding in one or two word sentences wherever possible.
“What’s wrong?” He pressed.
Kazuki sighed and set his fork down. “It’s stupid.” He shifted around in his seat for a moment:
“It’s just…when I was brushing my teeth this morning. I noticed this.” He said, pointing to his eye. Rei leaned forward to try and see what he was talking about.
“Is there something wrong with your eye?” Rei squinted in confusion to try and see what Kazuki was pointing out.
“What? No! I have wrinkles, Rei!!” He said sadly. “I’m starting to look old and I hate it”
“Why is looking old bad?” Rei asked, taking another bite of his cereal.
“Because I don’t want people to think I’m ugly. Okay?” Kazuki exclaimed before hiding his face in his hands. Rei tried to think of something to say. He really didn’t see what the big deal was, but this was obviously bothering Kazuki and he wanted to help.
“Rei?” Kazuki asked in a small voice before Rei could come up with something. He looked up, eyes full of fear. “Do you think I’m ugly?”
Once Rei had processed Kazuki’s question, he couldn’t help but laugh at how ridiculous it was.
“What the hell?! You don’t have to laugh at me.” Kazuki said angrily, tears welling in his eyes. He got up and began to storm away when Rei grabbed his wrist.
“I’m laughing because that was one of the stupidest things you’ve ever asked me.” Rei said, standing up and wrapping his arms around Kazuki’s waist from behind. “Why in the world would I think you’re ugly Kazuki? You’re beautiful”. Kazuki froze.
“Beautiful?” He whispered.
“I mean. I think so”. Rei said. Giving compliments wasn’t one of Rei’s strong points, but he knew Kazuki needed him to try. “Your hair is the color of a piece of French toast that’s perfectly cooked, and it always looks so fluffy and soft and nice to play with.” He said, burying his face in Kazuki’s hair and breathing in the scent of his shampoo, which smelled like some kind of citrus. Rei felt Kazuki relax slightly in his arms, which he took as a good sign.
“I’ve never seen someone with eyes like yours. They’re like…” Rei paused and guided Kazuki to turn around and face him so he could get a better look. “They’re like a fire that you sit by to get warm when it’s really cold outside” He said, placing a gentle kiss on Kazuki’s cheekbone.
“And your smile is literally contagious. I never smiled until I met you, you know?” Rei pressed another soft kiss to the edge of Kazuki’s lips. “And when I’m having a bad day where I’m in pain or anxious or whatever I just look at you and it makes me feel better.” At this point, Kazuki wrapped his arms around Rei’s shoulders.
“Really?” He breathed as he gazed at Rei. Rei nodded, feeling heat rise to his cheeks. He felt a bit awkward about saying all this stuff out loud, but it seemed like it was helping Kazuki, so he continued.
“And when it’s summer you get these freckles that are really cute, just like Miri does.” Rei continued, kissing Kazuki on the bridge of his nose where he would usually get them. “And when you’re trying really hard at Morio Kart your face does this thing where it gets all scrunched up in concentration, which always makes me laugh.” Rei kissed Kazuki’s forehead. “And when we’re going to sleep seeing you right there makes me feel safe” Rei said as he moved to kiss Kazuki’s jaw and neck where he would normally bury his face to sleep. The feeling of Rei’s breath on Kazuki’s neck caused him to shiver involuntarily.
“So yes, I think you’re beautiful, inside and out.” Rei said after a moment, holding Kazuki’s face in both of his hands and planting a firm but gentle kiss on Kazuki’s lips.
“But…what if I get old and you don’t think that anymore?” Kazuki asked once they pulled back.
“Kazuki.” Rei said in a serious voice. “I never thought I would get old. You gave me the chance not only to get old but to get old with a family I love” now that he was close, he could see the tiny wrinkles in the corners of Kazuki’s eyes that had started all this. He gently ran his thumb over them. “Every wrinkle, every gray hair, is just a reminder that I get to grow old with you, which makes me really happy” At this point, Kazuki completely lost it, breaking down sobbing on Rei’s shoulder.
Rei hugged him tightly, feeling a twinge of guilt. “Sorry! Did I say something wrong?!” he asked. Kazuki shook his head and continued to cling to Rei, his tears wetting the front of Rei’s shirt.
“You didn’t say anything wrong. It’s just…that was beautiful, Rei” Kazuki said once he had calmed down a bit, still resting his chin on Rei’s shoulder.
“I’m just stating the obvious,” Rei said, fully meaning it. Kazuki pulled back and laughed as he wiped his tears away with the back of his hands.
“I love you” Kazuki said, resting his forehead on Rei’s. Tears were still falling but he was smiling. Rei breathed a sigh of relief.
“I love you too.” Rei said, leaning forward and pulling Kazuki in for a long, tender kiss.
“So, whatcha want to do today?” Rei asked once Kazuki had stopped crying. He continued to place small kisses all over Kazuki’s face and neck.
“I don’t know.” Kazuki had been so wrapped up in his quarter life crisis he honestly hadn’t thought about it, and it was hard to think now with Rei kissing him all over. “I kinda want to just do this all day to be honest” he said with a breathy chuckle. Rei smiled against his neck. As much as Rei also wanted to do this all day, he knew Kazuki would get antsy if they didn’t actually do something.
“Tell you what?” Rei said, moving to look into Kazuki’s ruby red eyes, which were practically shining. “Let’s finish breakfast and marathon one of your favorite cooking shows, then maybe after we pick Miri up from school we can all go do something fun as a family?”
“That sounds perfect,” Kazuki smiled. Rei kissed him again, thinking how lucky he was that he and Kazuki had found each other.
