ugramm (vs. salaar)

so, Ugramm takes place on a much smaller scale than Salaar, where:

Khansaar = Mughor Devaratha = Agastya Varadha = Balaa Aadhya = Nithya Krishnakanth = Prabhakar Vishwa = Bilal Shivarudra, an MLA, and his son, Dheeraj who are equivalents for Khansaar's leaders

the plot, with comparisons:

the movie starts with an animated backstory, telling us that the reason Nithya's dad is in so much trouble is because he was asked to make a shipment (since he owns a shipping company) for Shivarudra's smuggled goods, and he refuses, due to which his wife is killed

before the men can kill Nithya, who is a baby at the time, Prabhakar promises to make the shipment, but he steals most of the materials, selling them himself. He tips the police off about Shivarudra, and runs to Australia with Nithya.

this is particularly interesting because the reason that Krishnakanth is in trouble hasn't been revealed yet in Salaar, but it's the first thing we find out in ugramm i highly doubt the reason will be the same in Salaar though, since it's implied Aadhya's mother dies in Australia and never got a chance to visit India.

Twenty years later, Shivarudra is out of jail, though he has been keeping the syndicate active through his son, and he still craves vengeance on Prabhakar.

he's in a state similar to Radha Rama, which probably means that Krishnakanth is the reason that Radha Rama had to leave Khansaar, and does not really show her face anywhere, choosing to operate instead through obulamma, vedha, and the others.

In the present day, an older Nithya comes to Bangalore to visit her mother's grave (not with ashes), and is kidnapped by Dheeraj's men, but Agastya comes for her after receiving a call from a friend (Vishwa) and takes her to his home afterwards

therefore it's Agastya who saves her (without violence, specifically), and develops a rapport with Nithya, rather than how it is in Salaar, with Bilal doing most of the work, and minimal involvement from Deva.

Starting here, there's a whole series of events that bring Agastya and Nitya closer, and MANY motifs and themes that recur, as a symbol of their feelings for each other.

this is a section, that even though it gets major importance in Ugramm, is completely skipped in Salaar, with prashanth even going as far as to not show any chemistry between Aadhya and Deva whatsoever. there's also much more comedy and lightheartedness in Ugramm, which prashanth has cut out of Salaar, which really drives it home that he means for Salaar to be very dark and undeniably gritty.

some of these scenarios include:

Agastya teaching Nithya the names of various vegetables in Kannada, because she's temporarily responsible for the cooking and other housework (since Agastya is hiding her true identity from his mother).

Nithya bothered by people in the market place, which is when Agastya's mother gives him permission to save her. [he draws a line around her in the sand (with an umbrella) and says: "the line is drawn. everything in this circle belongs to me"]

a whole montage telling us that, Agasthya will be everywhere Nithya is, just a step behind her, and as long as he is there, no one will dare to touch her.

Agastya sheltering her from the rain. with an umbrella. several times

he saves her from Shivarudra's men, and finds where she's hiding based on the fruit she describes to him over a call, because she doesn't know where she is (it's a gooseberry)

he takes her to her mother's grave and when they reach she says: "do i look pretty? (for my mother)" & he's just awestruck by her beauty

basically, prashanth really builds a meaningful relationship between Agastya & Nithya and makes us root for them.

there's this scene where Agastya's tattoo is revealed to Nithya, and she has a whole phase where she's kind of scared (unlike Aadhya, who is immediately fascinated by Deva's violence), but it still serves as relationship development for the both of them.

in Salaar, on the other hand, Deva and Aadhya barely get a chance to talk, and Deva doesn't really form the best of first impressions which makes me wonder: if prashanth intends on putting Deva and Aadhya together, would he really save all of that characterization and plot, just to dump it on us in part two?

Eventually, after observing how mysterious Agastya has been at times, and hearing rumors from the neighbors, Nithya asks Vishwa about Agastya's past, which is then shown to us in a way that's not as elaborate as what we see in Salaar.

an important point to note is that throughout the course of Ugraam's flashback, we know that Agasthya is intensely loyal to Balaa due to a promise made when they were children, but we see no proper reason for that fealty. We are never told why Agastya goes so far for Balaa, so there's no emotional quotient tied to any of Agastya's actions. Balaa especially is shown to be a bit smug when people witness the power Agastya holds, which makes it feel a little like Balaa is using Agastya as a weapon, and not as if Agastya is offering it himself.

Agastya saves the women of Mughor from a man like Vishnu (but imagine without the theatrics), which gets Balaa put in jail, and the way Agastya storms the jail to get Balaa out (which takes two minutes) is extremely anticlimactic compared to what happens in Salaar.

after getting Balaa out of jail, Agastya promises to conquer Mughor for him, and there's a specific scene where he gives Balaa a map and says:

"whatever you point at, will be yours"

this is the point in the plot at which Salaar: Ceasefire ends.

Following this, Agastya goes on a rampage, capturing areas of Mughor for Balaa, which gains both him and Balaa several enemies. Politically, things become heated, and it doesn't help that some people, including Balaa's brother, want credit for some victories.

Balaa's brother is irrationally aggressive at times, and this reaches a limit when Balaa's brother threatens an innocent women, whose husband they have just killed. Agastya disagrees with hurting her, since she's not involved, and helps the woman. Balaa's brother, feeling humiliated, says something about hurting Agastya's mom, and that turns out horribly, leading to a fight. This then ends with the brother's death, when he actually attempts to find Agastya's mother.

There is a chance that Deva will be responsible for Baachi's death for different reasons (and an even smaller chance that Baachi might not die at all), especially because Amma isn't in Khansaar when Deva returns, after 25 years. He returns alone. In, Ugramm, Agastya and his mother only escape their hometown when Agastya is well into adulthood. Ugramm does not have Salaar's childhood plot whatsoever, which changes the circumstance around Deva's return to Khansaar. This means that, if Deva invokes Varadha's rage by hurting/killing Baachi, it might be for something other than Baachi threatening his mother.

Agastya decides to leave Mughor, knowing that what he has done will be unforgivable for Balaa, and Balaa stops him right before they leave, intent on killing him. Agastya's mother, worried for her son, begs Agastya to make her a promise that he will never enter Mughor again or commit violence.

Agastya makes the promise at the last moment, and Balaa decides not to hurt him, before they part ways.

Fast forward to the present, Nithya's dad comes for her from Australia, and Agastya lets her go, (due to the classic 'she's too good for me' syndrome) which disappoints her, but she is then kidnapped and taken to Mughor, compelling Agastya once more, to step foot into that place.

Agastya fights to save her, killing Dheeraj in the process, but just before leaving, Balaa finds him. Agastya refuses to fight, willing to accept whatever punishment Balaa deems necessary, as long as Nithya is spared,

but Balaa, after consideration says:

"I won't fight a man who won't fight back. Even if I win, it'll bring me shame to attack a man who is already weak from fighting."

Before Balaa lets him go, he makes it clear that he has somewhat moved on, and acknowledges their friendship once again, calling Nithya "sister-in-law".

The movie ends with Agastya and Nithya outside of Mughor's borders, where he tells her to let him go, because of the way he is. She refuses, drawing a line in the sand around him as a callback to the first time he fought for her, and tells him that "everything in the circle belongs to her," ending the movie with the both of them together, and their prospective futures ahead of them.

this is where many things can go wrong if prashanth decides to put Deva and Aadhya together in a similar way, because he has not set them up for that. with the way he's laid out the plot and characterization, it is legitimately impossible to imagine: 1. Deva choosing anyone over Varadha, even if Varadha dies by the end of part two or 2. Varadha letting Deva go after they meet again, especially if he is able to move on from whatever Deva did that hurt him

All in all, Prashanth has made many minor changes regarding detailing, for the story to flow better, and he's scaled Salaar up to seem grander than life. It's evident that he has put more care into explaining every facet of the story, so that there's no plot holes, and been able to use Ugramm as a stepping stone to make Salaar that much better.

The major differences include showing us Varadha and Deva's childhood, and taking out all of Deva & Aadhya's relationship development, along with giving many of Nithya & Agastya's parallels to Varadeva, which suggests a different ending for Salaar: Shouryaanga Parvam, than that of Ugramm.

Dear the love of my life,

Once again I attempt writing to you. But this time with a more grown up and different perspective. And yet with all this perspective, the words are harder to come out now. Everything feels too much, a lot of it hopeless, a lot of it doomed. But with the little hope and faith I find, I write this to you. To you who I know is out there. To you who is figuring his life out.

Where are you now? Bangalore? London? Mumbai? Toronto? Badlapur? New Mexico? Seoul? Delhi, perhaps? Wherever you are, I send you the kind of energy you need the most right now. As of 23rd August, 2022, my love, what is it that you need? Is it the warmth of someone's sincerity? Is it a miracle to fix a very sticky situation at work or home? Is it strength that your body needs? Is it strength that your mind needs? A good, comfort meal? Peace? Whatever it is, I ask the universe to send it to you — kindly, timely, consistently, and abundantly.

The person I am right now is seeking something so intensely to a point that I have started to stray away from my values and beliefs. To a point that I have started to treat breadcrumbs like a gracious feast prepared specially for me. But if I love bread so much and there are supply chain issues, shouldn't I be strategic and figure out ways to fix them? Quarter by quarter but fix them? That starts now.

As I sit in Third Wave Café sipping on a very milky, very sweet iced coffee with a flower bouquet I curated for my friend who is sitting across me writing a letter to his to-be fiancé, as I feel cold due to the air conditioner for the first time in Bangalore, as I think about everything that's happened in the last five months, I now know this.

This is not the life I want. This is not the life I am going to continue to let myself live. From now on I am going to make decisions that protect me, that provide me with the best, that bring me peace, and that give me power. For I am going to bloom into the person that has always been inside me, waiting politely for me to recognize how precious I am. And I truly hope that you too are able to make the decisions that honor the divine in you and pacify the undivine.

We will meet. We have met. We exist. Soon. Always. Other than this, I have no declarations of love to make. I have no expectations to articulate. We will build and we will nurture and we will love exactly how it is precious to us. And we will laugh and laugh and laugh.

Omg! I love this idea and I don't see much either as I love Octane just as much. I'm sorry it took me so long to write and I'm sorry if the fight scene is a bit messy. I'm not really good with fighting scenes but I feel like Octane would do something like this so enjoy :)

“What are you doing? Are you crazy?” Lifeline asked as bullets were going past her head.

“I’m gonna ask her to marry me. I mean I don’t see the issue here, plus she and I have been dating for a while. I don’t see her saying no.” Octane said as he peaked over the ledge to see where the enemy team was.

“But we're in the middle of a fight right now. Are you sure she’s not gonna say no because we're preoccupied?” Lifeline asked as Octane shook his head.

“I don’t think so. If in all honesty I think everyone will be shocked that Octavio Silva is finally settling down after all these years. I know I would be.” Octane laughed as Y/N made a winge noise over mic and then called out that she was downed by a second team.

“Well, here’s your chance to be the hero. Go get them I guess.” Lifeline said as she rolled her eyes. She peaked over the ledge that Octane had just looked over and had seen where Y/N had gone down and sighed knowing that if he didn’t hurry the ring was going to pinch them and that was something she didn’t want to deal with.

“I’m coming Y/N! Just hold on!” Octane called over mic as he jabbed the needle of his stim into his chest and jetted out of the building on the north east side of The Mirage Voyage, grabbing the zipline, and then down to the second floor where he saw Mirage finishing Y/N and Wraith guardian the door.

“Wow, that's quite the predemis—Pruh—Preh... Predicam—uh... It's a bad situation for you.” Mirage smiled as he started moving backwards in some type of moonwalk dance and kick up his foot to finish Y/N but ended up stopping as Octane pulled out his R-99 and started shooting him, stopping him from finishing Y/N, and had both Wraith and Mirage focused on Octane so Lifeline could pick Y/N up.

"On yuh feet. Lifeline's gotcha back." Lifeline smiled as she had quickly followed Octane down the zipline and through the building to pick Y/N up. The three of them now dealing with Wraith and Mirage that when Y/N did finally heal up Lifeline had gotten shot by their third member Bangalore and groaned seeing her down weapon was a G Scout fully kitted.

“Tango down.” Bangalore smirked as she and Y/N locked eyes. Bangs was about to go after Y/N when Octane got between the two and sat down on one knee nearly confusing Bangalore and Y/N on what he was doing.

“Le-et me have this moment real quick, please?” Octane said as he shot at Bangalore giving her a warning and then downed Mirage as he tried to finish the job with Y/N.

“What are you doing? We have to finish them!” Y/N growled as she was aiming her gun at Bangalore looking around to figure out where the hell Wraith had fazed off too.

“Something I should have done a long time ago but was too chicken to do so…” Octane said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out what could only be but a small square velvet box.

“You gotta be kidding me.” Bangalore said while shaking her head, “You're doing this now?!”

Octane nodded his head, “Uh, yeah, I don’t see a better time than doing it now.”

Lifeline rolled her eyes as she and Bangalore waited for Octane to continue. The three of them standing on the bottom floor of the building just watching the ring grow closer as Mirage was knocked down in a corner, probably talking to Wraith and figuring out what to do while the other team and Bangalore were off proposing to people.

“Well, get on your knee Silva, got less than four-five.” Bangalore said as Octane quickly nodded and turned to face Y/n. His left hand removing his goggles so everyone could see his brown eyes and his cheeks a bit pink as he, himself, couldn’t believe he was doing this.

“Come on Silva we don’t have all day.” Lifeline said as she was starting to join the group of annoyed people.

“Right, Y/N, -” Octane began as Y/N nodded smiling from ear to ear, “-I know we haven’t been an item for a long time and I know we’ve been friends for twice as much, but ever since that day up on Kings Canyon on the jump course, where we did some sick teamwork on the jump pads, I knew I wanted to spend foverever with you. You're fun and amazing and when you do that thing with the P2020.” She flipped it around her pointer finger and then threw it up into the air before catching and putting it back into its holster, “I knew you were the love of my life, my partner in crime, my life long duo…” the list goes on and on as when Octane finally pulled out the ring Y/N gasped. The diamond was green wrapped around pure silva (see what I did there??). It was the same color as his stim and green hair. Tiny but on point as he didn’t want something flashy, but enough to catch someone’s eye. He wanted the ring to represent him and her put together and to show that Octavio Silva can be locked down. He just had to find someone special enough to do so.

“Awe, babe, you… shouldn’t have…” Y/N said as she held out her hand and waited for Octane to finish.

“Come on Silva pick it up we gotta go!” Bangalore said as she tapped her foot against the concrete.

“Ooo, right…” Octane said as he nodded. He pulled the ring out of the velvet box and smiled, holding it up to Y/N with a smile, “Will you make me the most happiest man alive and marry me?”

Y/N smiled nodding, “Of course you idiot. Of Course.'' and when she slipped on the ring Wraith came out of nowhere and finished off the three of them. First throwing a grenade and weakening them and then knocking all three of them with a R-301.

“Jesus, Wraith, couldn’t come fast enough? Where did you go?” Bangalore said as she threw down and heat shield and started looting through Octane’s box.

“I had to take care of some outside squads. I heard some strays while shielding up earlier and just sorry I came back late.” She said as she picked up Mirage who was mumbling some nonsense to himself. He looted through Y/N’s box as when the three of them were done. Heading out of the building and took off on the zipline.

“Did you know he was going to propose all this time?” Mirage asked as he looked back at Bangalore.

“Yeah, but I wasn’t expecting him to nearly kill us all with ring.” Banaglore sighed as she felt the heat from the ring burn her skin.

It shouldn't have been surprising that the weather forescast in Japan wasn't the same as in India. And yet there was Miyako, looking dejected, sitting at the (thankfully covered) bus stop while her dampt long hair made sure to leave puddles of water around her.

Her goal was to meet Lui right after his work shift to talk about his experiences as a Chosen Child. There was a lot she didn't understand about him being the "first" and the whole deal about Ukkomon being responsible for the Chosen Children system, so she was glad that the timid young man agreed to be interviewed by her. The plan was to meet him outside the cafe he worked at, but since she didn't know its exact location, she only managed to open a Digital Gate on the nearby area.

What poor excited Miyako didn't expect was to be pouring down back at Tokyo, considering how clean the skies were in Bangalore that day. Clear skies meant no umbrellas, which in turn left her stuck between that bus stop and the growing desire to throw it all away and open a Gate back to her dormitory.

She was typing on her phone, about to call the whole thing off, when a soft voice called her name. There was Lui, right next to the bus stop, his umbrella doing a terrible job at keeping him safe from the rainstorm.

- Oh, Ohwada-kun, I was... - she waved her phone at him, as if it meant anything - ...nevermind. Come, sit! There's a lot to talk about, and the rain won't stop any time soon!

He hesitated for a moment, seemingly unsure of what was happening, but soon joined her under the canopy while closing his umbrella. A moment of silence went by before he confessed he thought she wouldn't show up that day. No one was crazy enough to go out in that storm, not if they could avoid it. Lui, who had no other choice, was just there to catch a bus and go home.

- I see... - Miyako hoped he hadn't noticed her blush, being pretty sure he'd just called her crazy. He wouldn't be the first, but still - The weather was pretty nice in Bangalore, y-you know? And I didn't want to miss this today, I had already arranged my schedule for it. Do you mind if we go somewhere together? There's still so much I need you to tell me!

the National Flag was flown on Government buildings only .. until a kind Member of Parliament, Mr Jindal asked why it cannot be raised on our homes .. the question was negated .. and he moved Court , won the decision in his favour and immediately I started flying our National Flag on our homes .. as many that came for the meets on Sunday at the gates would have noticed on Jalsa ..

there were of course various restrictions .. when it should be raised, when brought down, size , material .. and it was to be made of ‘khadi’ and bought from one particular store in Bangalore till 2014 - now renamed Bengaluru ..

now there is a campaign for it to be flown from every home with pride ...

those memories gently in the mind of the Independence on 15th August 1947 .. and a 5 yr old me holding the flag in our modest home in Allahabad , in the veranda, filled with pride pf patriotism , of identity , of being mine and ours , of belonging .. and since then each occasion , the emotion that rides with it every time it is played .. one of the most, being the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata and the Indo - Pak cricket match , being asked to sing it live for the start of the game .. and a 100,000 thousand that filled the arena, singing along with me ..

my pride of being an Indian 🇮🇳 !! Jai Hind !! 🇮🇳

and that ecstatic evening when India won the World Cup Cricket .. Abhishek and I on top of our car waving the tricolour driving about the streets screaming shouting along with the hundreds that thronged the roads ..

they asked me this afternoon to sing a few lines of the song being picturised for the moment .. I have .. any association with National fervour a pride .. !!
