"They sat on the edge of the heated indoor pool, jammies rolled up to their knees, hands almost touching, legs dangling in the water. They’d abandoned their robes and slippers on one of the poolside chairs. Ed wasn’t gonna say anything, but he was a little bit chilly without it."

YOU WERE STARTING TO ENVY COUPLES WHO FOUGHT.
At least they could let all their anger and emotions out on each other. At least they could communicate what was bothering them instead of talking to a wall. At least they weren't begging for their significant other to just speak to them.
Every conversation you had with your boyfriend just made you feel more and more hopeless. You weren't even able to tell Sunghoon how horrible he made you feel the last night you two spent together. It was nearing the next round of midterms now and you were still at a standstill in your relationship.
You didn't even want to go to the stupid club anymore; your mood soured after your brief conversation with Sunghoon, and all you wanted to do was curl into your bed and cry your eyes out.
But you were cold. And your mattress was even colder.
This was a responsibility that someone like you was supposed to uphold. Even if you were at your lowest, you were still expected to dry your eyes and show face.
When you saw Heeseung's text, informing you that he was outside, you groaned, still rolling your mascara wand across your lashes.
In under a minute, you managed to finish your mascara and eyeliner, opting to not go for a full-beat tonight. Your mother, a world renown fashion designer, recently sent you the most gorgeous Christopher Esber dress, but you had been hoping to wear it for your boyfriend to see. Now that he was a no-show yet again, you settled for something less flashy.
When you were outside, you spotted Heeseung's Mercedes-Benz parked up ahead. From the back window, he seemed to be craning his neck to talk to someone in the back seat. Surely, he wouldn't make his girlfriend sit in the back, so you realized he picked up the transfer student—Jay—first.
"Hey," Heeseung greeted as soon as you opened the door, giving you a once-over that made you feel relieved that Chaewon wasn't in the car.
You chose to ignore the look he gave you and apologized, "Sorry for taking so long."
"Nah, it wasn't that long. Jay and I were just talking."
Jay grinned, and you were pretty sure it was your first time seeing him smile like that. "He was telling me about Yeonjun almost selling coke to a professor."
You couldn't stop yourself from nearly bursting into laughter, quickly slapping your palm over your mouth. Jay's grin only widened at your reaction.
"So fucking funny," Heeseung said, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Heeseung! It's not funny," you scolded, even though you found it hilarious. "He could've gotten in serious trouble."
"C'mon, it's a little funny," Jay said, all lighthearted.
Since you two were in the back seat, you turned to look at him with a retired sigh, as if you were so devastated that you couldn't defend Yeonjun over this. You held up your thumb and pointer finger like you were pinching something, as if to say, yeah, just a little.
You and Heeseung made eye contact in the rearview mirror, and he held your gaze as he said, "Loosen up, Y/N."
You folded your arms across your chest. "Yeah, pass me some of the coke you bought off him."
He smirked at you. "Snitch."
When Heeseung stopped in front of Chaewon's apartment, you three discussed the Yeonjun situation some more before she came stumbling outside with a few shooters in her hand. After hopping into the front seat, she leaned over to press a kiss to Heeseung's cheek. You noticed how he stiffened, though, averting his gaze.
"I brought you guys some shooters," she said with a giggle, clearly already tipsy. You gingerly took the two she handed to the back and passed one to Jay.
"Thanks, Chae," you said, inspecting the tiny Pink Whitney bottle you took from her. "How have you been?"
"Exhausted," she admitted, looking suddenly miserable. You thought it was an innocent question but it put a damper on her mood within seconds. "I signed up to be orientation leaders with Seunghan and Eunseok, and our first meeting was five hours long—at night!"
"There's absolutely no way you're gonna have time for the Order and being an orientation leader," Heeseung said, facing her once they were stopped at a red light. "Aren't you doing an internship this summer, anyway?"
Jay seemed to balk at the mention of internships, and Heeseung started rattling off about how he needed to start applying soon. You decided against sharing your plans because all you could think about was how it was probably going to be a lonely summer vacation.
For the rest of the car ride, even with Heeseung and Jay chatting yours and Chaewon's ears off, you couldn't seem to focus on their conversation at all. You stared straight ahead, wondering if you told them about your relationship issues and your academic stress, would they ignore your problems the same way your own boyfriend did?
Tumblr media
The club was no better.
The music was too loud, the lights were too blinding, and you felt claustrophobic by all the bodies packed tightly on the floor.
You spent the first hour talking to Kim Jennie; then you took Yuna to the bathroom to help her throw up; then you let Jeon Wonwoo buy you a drink while he talked about his dissertation topic; then you introduced Jay to Yoon Jeonghan and watched them hit it off; then you attempted to muster up the courage to approach Park Sungjin about Sunghoon not showing up (and proceeded to chicken out); and then you ended up sitting on one of the couches by yourself, completely exhausted and drained from all the social interaction.
Normally, you would've thought twice before sitting on the couch at the club. God knows what it had been through, and you didn't want to find out. However, you were so worn-out that you didn't even care anymore.
While you were people-watching (specifically eyeing Jennie, who you were hoping would give you her seat, laughing at something Zhong Chenle said), Jay came over to sit next to you.
You were confused at first, asking, "Where's Jeonghan?"
"Called an Uber for him 'cause he got so wasted, so Joshua went home with him," he replied, grimacing at the memory. "He wouldn't stop kissing my head."
You smiled weakly as you envisioned a drunk Jeonghan grabbing the sides of Jay's face and planting kisses on the top of his head.
"So, uh, why're you alone?" he asked.
"Wish I knew."
You two lapsed into silence. Not particularly uncomfortable silence, though, thanks to how loud everything was around you.
Jay noticed how quiet you had gotten and asked, "Is everything okay?"
"Huh. I haven't heard that question in a while."
"Well, are you?"
You had been trying to reply in a joking manner so that he wouldn't take you seriously, but hearing the sincerity in Jay's tone made you feel unnerved.
You were quiet for a few moments before you answered, "To be honest, no—not really."
"Ah..." For a second, you thought Jay would take that as his cue to get up and leave. You wouldn't blame him, either; no one wanted their mood to be brought down like this at a club. "Have you talked to Sunghoon about it?"
You scoffed. "It's about him, actually."
"Then what about Heeseung?"
"I couldn't. They're best friends, too."
"Your other friends?"
"They're just gonna tell me they told me so."
"Well... then how about me?" He gave you an awkward smile when you shot him a furious look, as if you couldn't believe he even suggested it, but then your face started to soften. "I mean, I've never said I told you so."
You weren't sure why, but, right now, you felt like you could tell Jay anything on your mind. Maybe it was because of the whole period blood incident; if he could be so understanding about that, then he could handle hearing anything you said. Or maybe it was because he didn't come from such high-class families like the rest of your friends. He wasn't held to some standard to look good in front of you or impress you. From what you picked up on over the past few months, he didn't even seem to care about wealth.
You sucked in a sharp breath, still overwhelmed by the pounding music that made your bones rattle. "Wanna get some fresh air then?"
"Lead the way."
It was much cooler outside, and you soon realized that this wasn't the smartest idea for someone wearing a backless mini dress. But it was far less suffocating to be outside, and you felt like you could finally breathe again without all the sweat and alcohol making you feel gross.
The streets weren't as busy as you expected, save for some students roaming about—probably because New Haven was more of a college town. Your breath was coming out in white clouds of vapor, and before you could even wrap your arms around yourself and rub some heat into your arms, Jay was already handing you his leather jacket.
You took it without even thinking, and then said, "Whoa, my second one from you." A small grin crossed your face. "I feel like I'm collecting your jackets at this point."
He looked down at his feet, shrugging. "I don't mind. Seemed like you needed it more than I did."
You put the jacket on over your dress, and it was like being wrapped in an embrace with how insulated it was. The sleeves were a bit too long and the jacket fell past your dress itself, but you still appreciated the gesture.
You two sat down at a bench farther down the sidewalk. It was freezing and your dress didn't cover enough of your thighs, but Jay's jacket was warm around your body.
"Why didn't Sunghoon show up?" Jay asked. "Is that why you were upset?"
"Sort of."
"Then what is it?"
You sighed. Trying to find the words. Trying to make sense of everything that was going on. Trying to figure out if Jay genuinely wanted to listen to your problems.
He hesitated before asking again, "Y/N?"
You sucked in a sharp breath before starting, "Okay, you wanna know what the problem is? It's the fact that my boyfriend seems to have time for everyone but me! I can't even understand what's going through his head—I mean, we hung out more before we were dating! I can't help but feel like he just doesn't... like me anymore. He used to spend weeks at my place, and now I have to beg him to show up for a few hours.
"And don't get me started on the Order—god, it's, like, the only thing Sunghoon cares about right now. And I don't even know why he's so stressed about everything when he has a guaranteed seat! I'd understand if he told me what's going on but he never talks to me about anything anymore. You've gotta keep this between us, but I think my parents and Sunghoon's parents have been waiting for the two of us to get together our whole lives. Now that it's happened, I can't help but wonder if Sunghoon felt like he was forced into a relationship with me.
“Honestly, come to think of it, the last time I expressed a personal concern to him that's been bothering me for years, he hardly gave me any genuine comfort over it. I don't think he even cared! He just wants me to live up to the same standards my parents set for me because he's so obsessed with living up to his dad's expectations."
You noticed your breathing had shallowed by the end of your rant, and you had to sit in silence for a few moments as your chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm. Instead of checking for Jay's reaction, you kept your eyes down. You wouldn't blame him if he made a run for it now.
After what felt like forever, Jay asked, "You've told him all of this?"
"Not exactly all of it. He's been blowing off most of our plans ever since we started our third year." Your lip was curled in disdain at this point. "I just—I mean, has he told you anything? You've gotten close to him and Heeseung, right?"
"Uh..." Jay trailed off for a moment. "I think he was just upset about the Yuna thing. Other than that, I thought you two made up after your fight at Heeseung's party."
"Does he think so? I don't think we have."
"You two haven't talked about it?"
"Not really. He hasn't been very open with me."
There was a pause before Jay replied rather bluntly, "You deserve better, Y/N."
If there had been heavy stones weighing your heart down, Jay had just about demolished them with his words. You didn't even realize how badly you needed to hear that from someone.
Having a boyfriend like Sunghoon meant that you were were always gushed over how lucky you were. Eventually, it got to a point where you truly stopped believing you could do any better, so even when your boyfriend wasn't treating you right, you had no hope that you could find someone who would.
Unlike Heeseung, who mostly turned a blind eye to the way his best friend mistreated you, Jay had the sense to call your boyfriend out. Instead of crying, you felt a swell of relief in your chest. If Jay could feel the same way about the situation, then maybe you weren't going crazy or being inconsiderate about Sunghoon's feelings.
Jay mistook your awestruck silence for tension, so he quickly stammered, "Uh... I mean, no offense to Sunghoon or anything. I just meant—"
"No, that was exactly what I needed to hear." You turned to look at him, sighing softly. "I've been thinking of breaking up with him for a while—or I'll give him an ultimatum."
"Do you think an ultimatum's gonna work? That means you'd have to give him another chance."
"I don't know." Tears welled up in your eyes as you shook your head. "I'm just so tired of everything."
Jay stood up, looking down at you expectantly. "Come on."
You frowned. "Where?"
"To get something to eat. I always feel better after I eat something good."
You stared him down long enough for Jay to turn his face, embarrassed.
"If you want," he added in a meek voice, "I recently found a place with good Mexican food open late around here."
Strangely enough, the corners of your lips tugged upward into a smile.
"Sure, let's do it."

big brother & little sister energy.
the two met before i-land but were never friends, they just knew each other because of what people told them about the other.
heeseung was an ace trainee and everyone knew it, including yumi.
this intimidated yumi because of how everyone spoke so highly of him.
the only time they actually hung out was when mutual friends of them went to a noraebang and both were invited.
even then, they only exchanged a few words.
jump to i-land days, when heeseung saw her enter he knew she was a tough contestant.
the older opted to be on her side rather than be her opponent so, he quickly went up to her a sprung out a conversation whenever they were set at i-land.
they were very friendly at the start and as i-land progressed they got even closer to each other.
heeseung reminded yumi of her brother and she thinks this is why they grew so close in such a short time.
in present time, they are fully like siblings.
hee (and jay) is very protective over yuyu, always making sure she's alright.
when she's wearing a skirt, he'll lend her his jacket to cover up; when she has solo promotions, he always makes sure she's doing alright; when yumi is in an uncomfortable situation he's the first one to know and take her out of it.
like she does with her brother, yumi confides in him for his opinion as the older one.
their favorite activities to do together are karaoke nights, late night talks over a bowl of ramen and writing lyrics together.
heeseung has her contact saved as ‘en- yumi ☀️’ and she has him saved as ‘seung-oppa 🎶’
Tumblr media
ıllı 𝐲𝐮𝐦𝐢 + 𝐣𝐚𝐲 = 𝐣𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐢 !
another member that is like her big brother.
they also hadn't met before i-land so it was a fresh start when the two met in the show.
at first, yumi found jay intimidating and didn't have to courage to go up to him.
but with a little help of her group mates she went up to him and started chatting.
when Jay was struggling in the show, she was the one who could be seen next to him encouraging and lifting up his spirits. she hated to see how he put himself down.
in exchange, jay would be the one protecting yumi from though comments which lower her self esteem very quickly.
throughout i-land they developed a friendship which was mainly based on looking out for each other and helping the other.
they both bonded over their love for fashion in and after the show. this fact helped to bring them closer.
after i-land, they developed the sibling type of friendship.
like previously stated, heeseung and him are yumi's big brothers in the group.
unlike heeseung, who mainly makes sure she's physically okay, jay is the one who makes sure she is mentally and emotionally okay.
he does a lot of check ups on her because he knows that yumi puts up an act of being the sunshine of the group but inside she's struggling.
jay sees right through her and is always there to help her get through whatever she's struggling with.
also! yumi is jay's oficial sous chef and is his main helper in the kitchen. when she started cooking with the older member, she barely knew how to cook ramen noodles.
she now knows how to cook herself a basic meal without burning down the kitchen!
which actually almost happened because yumi left the stove on with a pan of oil on it. jay removed her cooking alone privilege for some time after that.
their favorite activities to do together are cooking, watching netflix and shopping.
jay has saved her contact as ‘sous chef 🍳’ and she saved his contact as ‘my stylist 🕶️’

ıllı 𝐲𝐮𝐦𝐢 + 𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐧 = 𝐲𝐮𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐧 !
opposites attract with these two!!
another pair who hadn't met before i-land.
even though he was friends with jake and yumi had met him prior to the show, jake never introduced the two to each other.
their first meeting was a very funny one.
yumi was lowkey starstruck when she saw sunghoon. she had seen his skate competitions before and one of her best friends was a huge fan of his. said friends had dragged yumi to see one of his competitions. so it took her a hot minute for her to say hello back whenever they met in i-land.
but after overcoming the initial starstruck, yumi went to back to her extraverted self and quickly sprung up a conversation with the boy.
this shocked sunghoon as he is introverted by nature and made it a bit awkward between the two.
the first couple conversations of the two were basically: yumi speaking 90% of the time and sunghoon listening and commenting whenever he felt like it.
while and after i-land they were known as the opposites attract duo.
very much black cat and golden retriever energy.
sorry jakehoon, yuhoon is the ship now.
in i-land you could see how they worried and cared about each other when either one of them faced the chance of elimination.
yumi went to the ground two times, and the first person she went to hug goodbye and hello was sunghoon (heeseung would low-key get upset she went to hug sunghoon instead of him). his eyes would light up when she came back, it was so endearing.
they bring each other's playful / chaotic side out.
yuyu LOVES to poke his dimples, she finds them so cute.
don't let his introverted personality fool you though, hoon is also protective over yumi. especially with guys she dates / brings to the dorms.
but her love life is a whole nother shit show we can talk about in a future post 🤡.
they're like jaywon but opposites attract version.
he isn't one to show much affection physically but yumi knows he supports her with his actions.
yumi needs water? he's already on it. she's stressed because of uni? he has set up a movie and popcorn in the living room.
in exchange, yumi is always there for when he needs a little vent or just needs someone.
omg they once went to an ice skating rink because yumi insisted on learning the basics of skating and let's just say sunghoon was very frustrated with yumi falling every two seconds.
their convos at first were very shy and soft spoken but in present times, they love to annoy each other being sarcastic.
their convos are 50% sarcastic.
they like to annoy the hell out of each other, whether it be on or off camera.
their favorite activities to do together are sharing music recs with each other, teaching each other their hobbies (ice skating & modeling) and play fighting.
she has him saved as ‘ice ice baby 🩵’ and sunghoon has her saved as ‘yumi kang ☀️’.
Tumblr media
ıllı 𝐲𝐮𝐦𝐢 + 𝐣𝐚𝐤𝐞 = 𝐣𝐚𝐞𝐲𝐮 !
tom and jerry duo !!
jake and her are the sweetest and purest souls out there. but also very chaotic too.
in i-land, these two were seen speaking in english with each other almost all the time.
even in i-land, when they first met, they were teasing each other.
as time went on, they started to have more confidence with each other and started to bicker and tease each other more.
the members say that they're always play fighting (even more than sunghoon and her).
although they bicker and tease each other, they really love and care for one another.
yuyu loves teasing him by imitating his accent and he finds it so endearing!!
“naurrr” but in tiny.
Jake helps yumi with being more organized and focused as she is really bad at both.
jake is another one who is protective over yuyu, not wanting her to get hurt by anyone. he is protective over her like an older brother would be of a younger sister.
their favorite activities to do together are watching movies, making playlists, and talking about their doggies!! (yumi has a one year old golden retriever named winnie, who stays with her parents.)
jake dragged yumi to watch vincenzo with him and she got HOOKED.
she has the fattest crush on both vincenzo and chayoung.
jake was the one who literally begged yuyu to go blonde. he wanted someone to accompany him in the pain of being bleach blonde.
and after months of persistence and annoying her about it, yumi caved and dyed her hair blonde with him.
yumi was named Layla's official godmother by jake and he was named winnie's official godfather by her.
she saved Jake's contact as ‘winnie's godfather 🐾’ and he saved yumi as ‘layla's godmother 🐾’.
Tumblr media
ıllı 𝐲𝐮𝐦𝐢 + 𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐨𝐨 = 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐢 !
the 03 linerz !!
sunoo was actually the one who approached yumi in i-land, asking her if she could lend him a face mask. she obviously said yes and gave him one, then they started chatting about skincare and that conversation slowly shifted to getting to know each other.
it was the most random first conversation but it was a fun one, nonetheless.
they then started to talk more and their friendship flourished!
yumi quickly got attached to the boy, finding comfort in him.
they're literally the definition of platonic soulmates.
⅓ of yumi's pretty boys.
she sees him as a twin brother / best friend, which means she cares for him x2.
not that she doesn't care for the other members, she does. and a lot.
sunoo rants and she listens regardless if his rant is long, she will listen. she thinks everyone deserves to have someone to listen to their rants!
skincare routine legends!!!!
they take it very seriously and they usually do it together before they go to sleep.
they also share skincare tips and tricks with each other.
their favorite activities to do with each other are skincare and shopping.
he brings yuyu sweets and snacks when she's upset, knowing how much she loves them and how they lift her spirits up.
yumi matches his energy (and all the members' energy, for that matter), so when he's dramatic, she'll be dramatic.
sunoo helps livie go out of her comfort zone, in a good way, and she is very grateful about that.
sunoo knows yumi's life more than she does. she tells him all the gossip going in between her friends and people she knows to the point sunoo talks about them like he actually knew them lmao.
heavy side eye to anyone they don't like and they're not shy about it !!!
sunoo is her brother from another mother.
she saved him in her contacts as ‘sunoo luv 🧸’ and he has livie saved as ‘yuyu 👑’
Tumblr media
ıllı 𝐲𝐮𝐦𝐢 + 𝐣𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐰𝐨𝐧 = 𝐦𝐢𝐰𝐨𝐧 !
yumi LOVES this boy so much, omg.
older sister & younger brother type of dynamic.
jungwon was the one who approached yuyu, wanting to be friends with her since a couple of days before. little did she know that he had the cutest crush on her!
the boys would tease him so much and he would be so flustered whenever she hugged him or did any form of skin ship with him.
this crush was more of a passing crush as he stopped having a crush on her after some weeks.
they're so sweet towards each other!!!
⅓ of yumi's pretty boys.
even though yumi is older, she does see him as a leader and respects him as one.
speaking of leader things, yumi helps him with his leader responsibilities when she sees that he's overwhelmed with them.
the only member jungwon is not savage with (and that's on being part of yumi's pretty boy line).
yumi calls him wonnie and boba ( in english ) 99% of the time and jungwon is convinced that she forgot his real name.
helps him with school like she does with ni-ki.
she's jungwon's personal therapist. she is always there for when he needs to rant or just wants to speak with someone without being judged.
yumi is the baby of her family so being the 'older sister' in their friendship is refreshing for her.
she lowkey spoils him and ni-ki because of this.
their favorite activities to do together are listening to music while they talk about random topics and walking around in nature.
they once went on a picnic "date" to the Han river and fans went crazy when pictures of them together were leaked on twitter. they found them so cute and fawned over how close the two are.
she saved him in her contacts as ‘leader wonnie 🐑’ and he has her saved as ‘pretty mimi ❣️’
Tumblr media
ıllı 𝐲𝐮𝐦𝐢 + 𝐧𝐢-𝐤𝐢 = 𝐲𝐮𝐤𝐢 !
yumi hold ni-ki's custody, no one can change that.
ever since she saw him when entering i-land, she knew he was going to be the little brother she never had.
she actually was the one who went over to talk to him and he was so surprised but talked to her nonetheless.
yumi doesn't baby him, even if she sees him as her little brother.
you know how jake sometimes seems like ni-ki's babysitter? it's exactly the same with yuyu.
⅓ of yumi's pretty boys.
there's so many clips of her looking out / taking care of ni-ki on the internet and engene's have made a lot of compilations with them.
ni-ki is literally the only one from the maknae line that gets away with calling yumi noona.
jungwon can't call her that (she doesn't like her close friends calling her that since it feels too formal and it makes her feel old).
the members call it ‘the ni-ki privilege’.
activities they like to do together are just dance competitions, playing video games with each other and working out with each other.
yumi is not big on working out but she does like to do some exercise with ni-ki (and jake!).
ni-ki and yuyu are known to do late night just dance competitions, waking up their downstairs neighbors (and everyone on their floor, the floor below and the floor upstairs) but they don't really care.
they like to go to the arcade on free days (and the rest of the maknae line usually tags along and sometimes all of enhypen).
she cried in her room when ni-ki went to the ground. to this day, no one actually knows she did.
ni-ki always goes to yumi when he needs help on his science homework since he knows that's her favorite subject and she's also very good at it. she never gives him the answers though.
he loves him but she wants him to find the solutions to the problems, he has to do it by himself!
she saved ni-ki in her contacts as ‘little bro 💯’ and he saved her contact as ‘favorite noona 🤪’

Coffee and Comfort Summary: Reader works at a coffee shop and one morning is rough enough that she gets sent home not even 2hrs into her shift. Jay comes home and comforts her.
Waking up for your 8am shift at the coffee shop felt more like waking up for a 6:30 am shift at the coffee shop. You were tired and slow in your movements. You sat down in front of your mirror closet doors like you did every morning out of habit. Quickly changing into your work clothes, you gave yourself a quick pep talk while simultaneously trying to both convince yourself to go into work and at the same time convince yourself to call the manager on duty phone and call off. Opting for the route of needing to pick up your tips, so you had date night money for your date with Jay that weekend, you got up off the floor, zipped up your docs and walked out the door.
To say you should have called out of work, is an understatement, walking onto the floor and taking a tiny glance to the duty roster, you noticed it looked like every employee under the sun was scheduled for the day. Meaning there would be too many employees and not enough positions or tasks. But alas, you tied your apron and asked, “Where do you want me” to your shift manager.
“Start on register” she replied and you dutifully went over to the register and signed in. Taking a look at the long line forming outside the shop, you sucked in a breath, thought ‘I need the money’ and waited for the door to be unlocked.
The chaos didn’t take long to become overwhelming. On top of every employee scheduled, all the new fresh out of training employees were also on the floor.
“We are out of chocolate croissants” your coworker Amari called out from the food section.
“Hi, can I get a -” started a customer, “ - 86 the sausage breakfast sandwiches” called out Amari.
“A iced vanilla latte” concluded the customer.
“For su-” you began, “we have chocolate croissants again”
“For sure, what size”
“Medium” “you have 2 almond left, and 1 classic left”
“Hey, I’m looking for Kylie, is she still here?” asked the senior manager in charge.
“I don’t know” called your shift manager Riley.
“Ooh, what are we going to get?” asked an overly excited customer to her friends while they waited in line.
Was the music getting louder? Why can I hear every conversation but can’t finish a single conversation?
“Your total will be 14.99” you choked out while blinking back tears and hopping the customer in front of you doesn’t see you failing to keep tears at bay.
“Hi can I -” started the next customer who walked up.
“I’m so sorry, just give me one second” you choked out, before turning to face Riley.
“Can I go to the back real fast?” you asked.
After getting the go ahead, you quickly walked into the back and pulled your neckline of your shirt to your eyes and began crying. And before you could stop it you found yourself hyperventilating. “No, No, No” you audibly exclaimed while trying to get your breathing in check while you started shaking.
After a few minutes you had staved off the dreaded panic attack but you found yourself panicky, shakey, and on the verge of more tears. But alas, you wiped your eyes with your shirt, took a breath and walked back out on the floor.
“I’m back” you said as you walked back on the floor, “thanks I needed a moment” you added.
Riley took one look at you and could immediately tell you weren’t doing good. “Are you okay?” she asked. Normally you would lie and say you were fine, but you really didn’t want to be there anymore, so you actually said you weren’t.
Next thing you knew you were talking to the senior manager and then being told to go home and take care of yourself. You didn’t need to be told twice.
Walking into your apartment, you sighed, changed your clothes, and lept into bed and under the covers.
“Y/N?” called out Jay an hour later.
Noticing your bag on the floor, he walked towards your room. Opening the door, he noticed your shoes discarded to the side and could hear soft snoring. Gently shaking you Jay called your name until you rolled over and looked at him, “What?” you asked groggily.
“Why are you home? I thought you worked til 4:30”
“Had a rough morning, got sent home” was all you muttered while cuddling close to your boyfriend.
“Wanna talk about it?” he asked while shuffling himself to make himself more comfortable on your bed and allowing you to get comfortable curled up next to him.
“I was just overwhelmed and staved off a panic attack and it was too many people talking over one another, I’m good at my job, I’ve been in food service since I was 15, but today I felt like I was a newbie because I could never finish a single sentence without being interrupted and neither could a customer. It was like if I listened to a customer and drowned out the person on food, then I’d hear what the customer wanted but would miss out on important food items we were out of or running low on. And if I drowned out the customer and listened to what was being said on food, then I felt like an ass having to ask the customer to repeat themself or me guessing what they wanted based off of the limited words I heard them say and if I guessed wrong, which happened a lot, then I look like a ditz who can’t do their job! And I can do my job! I’m damn good at my job!” you cried.
Jay just held you while you let out your frustrations, “I know, I’m sorry it was overwhelming!”
You cried til you couldn’t cry anymore and you looked up at Jay and sighed, “I’m sorry, I know we were going to hang out tonight and this weekend, but I just have so much anxiety and really don’t want to do anything at least tonight, maybe this weekend we can do something”
Hugging you close to him, he bent down and kissed your head, “never apologize. You are always so quick to help me after a tough case, the least I could do is return the favor. When Kim and Roman responded to a call at your work and they noticed you weren’t there, when they got back to the district they told me and I knew something was wrong, you never willingly leave work early.”
“That’s why you knew to come here, I was starting to wonder how you knew I was home. Since normally you come over after I get home.”
He shrugged and smiled, “now, let’s say you get dressed in comfy clothes, then I’ll take you to your favorite coffee spot for some ice tea and then we’ll come back here and watch all the trash tv shows you want. How does that sound?”
Smiling, you replied, “Can we watch As The World Turns?” referring to the Soap opera that ran from ‘56 to 2010.
“Anything for you” Jay smirked.

Siren's Song - Chapter 4
Three months of peace had passed since the team had recovered the Golden Weapons. Alisha could be found training in the courtyard, running the training course as quickly as possible. Nya kept time, watching the siren gracefully slide through the course. Wu stepped outside, looking for the ninjas. Alisha took no notice, but Nya shook her head, pointing to another room inside the monastery. Wu shook his head in disappointment, closing the door as he left to chew out the ninja.
Nya turned her attention back to Alisha, who was wrapping up the course. "Whew! What's my time?"
The dark-haired girl grinned, checking the stopwatch. "Uh, forty-five seconds! Maintaining the same average as the last few rounds. Stamina seems to be holding out, and you've barely broken a sweat."
Alisha smirked. "Sounds great. I'm gonna go clean up, 'cause I was thinking about running into town and rescuing the rest of my stuff from my apartment. Need anything?"
Nya nodded. "Actually, yeah. I think we need to get more laundry supplies, and I have some stuff to get for myself as well."
The girls made their way inside. Alisha quickly changed from her blue sports jacket and matching leggings to a pair of ripped black jeans and a coral zip-up sweatshirt with a loose tie-dyed tank top underneath. The tank top read "This never happened" in black letters, a contrast to the blue-green dye job over the white fabric. She pulled her hair from its braid, keeping it in a simple loose ponytail. The siren grabbed a pair of soft-soled white sneakers, doing an awkward hop-walk as she pulled them on her feet. She made her way to the game room, where the boys sat playing video games. She made it in time to hear Cole say, "Well, I was gonna eat this pizza tomorrow, so if that's the case..."
Wu swiftly kicked the pizza slice out of Cole's hand. "Ow!"
The older man quickly snapped at the ninja. "No pizza for you! In order to reach your full potential, you must train."
Kai leaned back on his forearms, video game console on his lap. "Uh, remember when we did a little thing called the Tornado of Creation? I thought that was pretty insane."
Alisha stifled a giggle, continuing to sneak up behind the ninjas. Wu sighed. "Oh. You four have merely scratched the surface of your full potential. There are still so many secrets you have yet to unlock. You haven't even begun to tap into what powers your golden weapons hold."
Cole laughed. "You wanna talk secret powers? Check this out," he replied, using the Scythe of Quakes to plug in the TV, starting up the video game. Alisha readied herself to jump at them as Zane tried to comfort Wu. "Don't worry, Master. We will be ready when Lord Garmadon returns."
The siren crept up behind the boys, yelling, "BLEAH!"
The reactions of the ninjas made Alisha break down in giggles. Cole jumped, Kai shrieked, Jay fell over, and Zane yelled. Wu, upon seeing the chaos, had to stifle a laugh despite knowing the disappointing state the team was in.
The boys turned around to see Alisha sitting on the floor in a fit of giggles. "You- your faces," she managed to gasp out. "You look- ridiculous!"
Nya burst in, out of breath. "Guys, Lord Garmadon, he's returned! He was spotted approaching Jamanakai Village!"
Alisha leaped to her feet, laughter being replaced with shock. "Shit! Come on, let's go!"
She sprinted outside, opting to jump up and over the wall of the courtyard rather than go through the gates. As she free-fell down to the dragon stables, she used her Siren abilities to make her clothes shift from normal to her combat suit. Landing lightly on her toes she rose to her feet between doors to the separate stable stalls. As the doors opened, Alisha climbed onto Shard's back with ease and grace, compared to Zane, who struggled. She settled behind Zane's seat, laughing as they finally leaped into flight.
Alisha watched the conversation between the ninjas with a small smile. Her eyes widened when Jay asked, "Race you there?"
The rest of the team spurred their dragons faster. Alisha yelped at the change in pace but after a moment, recovered and whooped as Zane prompted Shard to move faster. "Come on, Zane! We'll beat them there!"
As they landed, Alisha hopped off first with a laugh, watching the others bicker over who arrived first. "Ladies, ladies, you're all equally pretty. Mission now, bickering later," she reminded them, grinning beneath her mask. Kai turned towards where the shadow of their enemy reflected off a wall. Evil laughter echoed around them. "Stay sharp, team. Whatever happens, never let your guard down."
The laughing shadow rounded the wall to reveal... a little kid in a black hoodie. Alisha rolled her eyes. "Oh, great," she commented. The kid laughed. "It is I, Lloyd Garmadon! I demand all the candy in town, or else!"
Jay's defensive position went slack as he stood normally. "Lloyd Garmadon? I thought we were gonna face Lord Garmadon."
Cole groaned, turning to Kai to explain. "It's his son."
Jay groaned. "Ugh."
Cole continued, addressing everyone. "Looks like he escaped his boarding school for bad boys again. And to think we could've been doing Spinjitzu already."
Alisha groaned. "Again? The last time was bad enough, with that two-week-long mission-turned-manhunt. This kid is gonna be the death of me."
Lloyd, getting no response, tried to make more threats. "Uh... gimmie your candy, or I'll release the Serpentine on you!"
The villagers of Jamanakai Village started booing. Lloyd pulled out a prank can of rubber snakes, unleashing them into the crowd. Alisha snickered as the villagers started throwing vegetables at the child. "No way! I asked for candy, not vegetables! I hate vegetables!"
Kai picked up one of the rubber snakes, slingshotting it out of the way as he spoke. "He's gonna have to do a lot better than use an old bedtime story to scare people."
Zane shook his head. "The Serpentine are real, Kai. They're not something to joke about."
Kai scoffed. "Serpentine? Real? We're talking about the ancient race of snake people who once ruled Ninjago and were supposedly locked underground."
Jay chuckled nervously. "Sealed in five different tombs to separate the warring tribes and ensure they don't unify to exact their revenge upon those who put them there."
Kai threw his hands in the air. "It was an old wive's tale to teach kids not to poke their noses where they don't belong. Don't you think it's a little suspicious no one's ever found one of their tombs?"
Cole sighed, approaching the kid standing on the fountain ledge. "Well, that's because you'd be a fool to look for one. If there was anything I hated more than dragons, it was snakes. Rubber or not."
The rest of the team joined Cole in getting the kid out of the main space. Jay got waffled in the head with the snake can, earning a stifled laugh from Alisha. "Eh, at least it isn't spider people. That would be bad," she commented. Cole waved off the people, saying, "Don't worry, folks. We'll take care of this. Nothing to see here."
The kid, fighting to get out of the team's grasp, started spewing nonsense. "Bow down to me or suffer my wrath! I'll give you to the count of three! One! Two!"
Kai butted in as they carried the gremlin child around the corner. "What are we supposed to do? Spank him?"
Alisha swatted his shoulder, scolding him. "Kai!"
The little kid got nervous. "Two and a half!"
A few minutes later, Lloyd was hanging off a sign by the back of his shirt, with food and mud all over him. Alisha snickered as the kid yelled, "You just made me your nemesis! Mark my words, you'll pay for this!"
Zane walked over to the candy stand nearby, purchasing candy for the rest of the team. The others each got some candy of their own from Zane, and Alisha ended up with a few lollipops. "Next time, try paying for your candy," Cole commented. Alisha shook her head with a grin, looking up at Lloyd. "Crime doesn't pay, niño. Trust me. It's not worth it."
Jay made a show of eating his cotton candy, taunting the ten-year-old. "Mmm... cotton candy."
The kid lost it at that, causing Kai to start laughing as the team walked away. As they walked back to the dragons, Cole wrapped an arm around Alisha's shoulders. "See? Nowhere near as bad as last time!"
The siren scoffed, face souring at the memory. "Yeah. Do you recall how we got that little gremlin to stop stealing our shit? Because I certainly do. Trust me, lullabies barely worked on that little demon child."
The team started to mount the dragons, Cole giving Alisha a boost onto Rocky. A scroll fell out of Kai's saddlebag. "Huh? I don't remember putting this here."
Zane examined the bag. "That Sensei's bag. You must've accidentally taken it in the rush."
Jay peeked over Kai's shoulder. "What is it?"
Kai turned to him in annoyance. "It's a scroll, windbag," he deadpanned. Alisha cracked a grin as Jay turned back with a matching look. "I know it's a scroll, but what does it say? It's written in chicken scratch."
Zane shook his head. "Not chicken scratch. The ancient language of our ancestors."
Alisha's eyes widened. Oh shit, she realized. Only Sensei's important and very secret scrolls are in the Old Tongue, like the-
"Uh, can you read it?" "Well, I can try. This symbol means 'prophecy'."
Ohhh no.
"Prophecy?" "It means it tells the future." "Of course. Ha-ha. I knew that."
Oh fuck no, I swear if this is what I think it is-
"'One ninja will rise above the others and become the Green Ninja, the ninja destined to defeat the Dark Lord,'."
Shit fuck shit fuck shit fuck shit fuck shit!
"Oh, look, a picture!" "Dark Lord? Hold on... you think they mean Lord Garmadon?"
Oh gods, please, no!
"Wait a minute! Is that us? Is anyone else thinking what I'm thinking?"
Shit! Oh, we're so screwed. Screwed.
The bickering of the others faded into the background as Alisha continued to panic. Oh gods, Sensei's plan is going to fall apart! The whole point of the team was that it wouldn't be any of them! I have to tell Sensei before the plan crumbles-
"Everyone, stop it! Remember why Sensei brought us together in the first place. We're a team. We weren't meant to see this, and probably for good reason. Come on, let's head back home. We have training to do," Cole's voice broke into the siren's thoughts, dispelling the panic. She registered a black blur in front of her. "Hey, you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost," Cole commented, meeting Alisha's panic-stricken eyes. She let out a shaky breath. "Yeah, just got caught up in my head," she replied, readying herself for the ride home. "Don't fly rough this time, I don't want to get sick like I almost did the last time I rode with you."
Cole laughed in front of Alisha. "That was one time! You can't let that go?"
The blonde scoffed. "Never," she replied with a playful jab to Cole's side.
About minutes later, the team returned to the Monastery of Spinjitzu with lively chatter between the boys. Alisha flicked her wrists, alighting her hands with the purple-pink glow of her siren powers. She quickly crossed them over her front and dropped them quickly. As she did so, her combat suit shifted back to her regular clothes, relaxing in her more comfortable day clothes.
As the team entered the monastery's courtyard, Alisha noticed Nya running the training course. She noticed the team and lost focus, getting knocked off of the course. Jay went and shyly offered her a hand. "Hey, Nya. Closer to beating your brother's speed record?"
The black-haired girl nodded with a grin, running a hand through her bangs and de-sticking them from her forehead. "I'm getting there. Heard what happened in town. Just a false alarm?"
Kai nodded. "Yeah. Uh, but we're gonna need the space. Sorry, sis."
As the boys set up the space, Alisha rolled her eyes. "Men. Always thinking with their fists."
Cole started laying down some rules. "Two matches. Then the winners of each face off for the title. The armor is for our own protection. It's time to see what these babies can do."
Kai turned back to the girls. "Hey, Nya. Wanna stay and watch me mop the floor with them?"
Nya shook her head. "No, thanks. Alisha and I have to get some stuff from Jamanakai Village. Knock yourselves out."
The girls turned and left, walking down past the dragon stables to the hidden driveway. Alisha guided the younger girl to her motorbike, passing Nya a spare helmet. "You might have to adjust it a little, Cole was the last one to use it."
Nya laughed, clipping on the helmet. The two girls soon arrived at Jamanakai Village and split up to run their separate errands. "You pick up what you need, and I'll get the groceries we need."
About an hour later, the girls had what they came for. As they packed up Alisha's bike, villagers started screaming and running. Nya sighed. "What now?"
Alisha took a look, seeing Lloyd Garmadon with a cart of candy. "Ugh. Mini Garmadon. Again. I'll handle him, you finish loading up the bike."
The siren stepped out into the street just in time to see a horde of snake figures marching in formation behind the kid. She just as quickly darted back behind the building next to Nya. "I would like to retract my previous statement," she stated with wide eyes.
They stayed hidden in the alleyway, watching the Serpentine mind-control the innocent villagers. Eventually, the rest of the team showed up and attempted to deal with the wayward child. But, when they realized they were outnumbered, they turned and ran. Alisha caught them with the Force, pulling them back into the alley with herself and Nya. "Guys!"
Jay laughed. "Ha! You guys are okay!"
Nya sighed. "Barely. They've hypnotized everyone in town."
"Mind control? How is this possible?"
The black-haired girl held up a hand. "When you hear them rattle their tails, don't look them in the eyes. That's how they get you."
Jay groaned. "Well, what are we supposed to do? We can't use our weapons, and now we gotta fight with our eyes closed? Ha, perfect."
Alisha nudged Nya in the side, pointing to the only snake with a real tail. "The snake with the staff is the General. He's the one in charge. If we can get the staff from him, it holds the anti-venom. If we get that, we can save everyone," Nya explained. Kai butted in, pointing out, "Look, guys. Forget about the whole Green Ninja thing. Let's make Sensei proud. The four of us. We're a team."
Cole laughed. "Now you're talking!"
Jay turned to Nya. "Oh, and Nya, you can be our honorary member."
The girl rolled her eyes. "Gee, thanks," she commented sarcastically. Alisha knocked Jay in the back of the head as she strode past him. "Ow!"
The siren peeked out around the corner. "It's a good thing I don't have to ruin these clothes," she commented nonchalantly. "I like this outfit a lot."
She opened her mind to the Force, feeling the familiar hum of her siren powers. A purple-pink glow engulfed her, and when it faded, she was now wearing her combat suit, cape and all. Strapped to her back was her spear, tucked safely in a small slit along the cape seams. A familiar call came from the Force, a plea from an old weapon to be brought back once more. She frowned, tuning out the call.
Alisha grabbed her spear, spinning it in her hands for a moment. "Let's see how those snakes like a taste of their own medicine."
She stepped into the street, hitting her spear against the ground to catch the Serpentine's attention. "Hey, snakes!"
Her eyes widened as a bunch of snakes turned to attack her. "Please work," she muttered as she sheathed her spear. Crossing her wrists in front of her torso, she grinned as her hands lit aglow with purple-pink tendrils of siren magic.
The tendrils poured from her hands, eyes, and heart down into the streets, creeping along the ground until they caught the leg or tail of a Serpentine warrior. Once she had a sufficient catch, Alisha started softly singing a dark, simple melody.
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where they strung up a man
They say who murdered three.
Strange things did happen here,
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the Hanging Tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where the dead man called out
For his love to flee
Strange things did happen here,
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In that Hanging Tree.
Alisha opened her eyes to see a crowd of Serpentine, eyes glowing the same purple-pink as her siren magic. They were under her control, completely unable to do anything other than what she willed them to. A dark smile crept across her face. "Sleep."
The Serpentine dropped to the ground unconscious, some snoring as they went down. Alisha released her hold on the snake beings before the whispers invaded her mind. She brought a hand to her head, holding back a gasp of pain from the sudden headache. "There's that karma," she groaned.
She noticed Zane confronting Lloyd. "Sensei was right. Never put off until tomorrow what can be done today. We should've dealt with you the first time around."
Lloyd shrieked. "Retreat!"
As the snakes turned to escape, Cole tackled the general, stealing his staff. But another snake tried to hypnotize him. Alisha tried to run to him but fell to her knees, still weakened from controlling so many beings at once. Nya saw everything and kicked the snake in the head. "Cole! You have the anti-venom!"
Cole shouted something back, but Alisha missed it when her ears started ringing. The siren's head drooped, forehead brushing against the ground. A red-clad figure entered her vision, but she couldn't tell if they were Kai or Nya. The figure picked her up, yelling something the siren couldn't quite understand. Through blurry vision, she saw the figure look her in the eyes. "Hang on, Alisha," they pleaded in a muffled voice. "Don't pass out."
Alisha started feeling lightheaded and floaty as her vision cut to black. The last thing she heard before passing out was her ringing ears.

FRIDAY 3RD DECEMBER.
the shoot didn't take long, and you made sure you maintained your professionalism the entire time, which of course, isn't a hard task for you, especially in your line of work, as you had to always be professional. plus you didn't want to let jay down, you felt like he was definitely trying to intimidate you a little when you two first met but who could blame him really? with the behaviour of the people who previously took photos of him, you understood his bluntness and uninterested tone in anything you had to say besides the topic of how the photoshoot was going to go.
as you were packing your belongings away, getting ready to leave, jay appears at your side, "hey, y/n, i just wanted to say thank you for today. you were completely professional and it's appreciated, so much, thank you. i apologise that i was a jerk earlier."
"don't worry about it, i don't blame you. i would feel the same way as you. being a photographer, you get to know others in the business and not everyone is as professional as they should be. people can take advantage or not do what they're paid to do by their clients. i'm sorry people have let you down in the past, and i hope that doesn't happen again," you give him a small smile and you're ready to say goodbye when he stops you, asking if you're free for a coffee. you accept his offer as you could definitely go for a cup of coffee right now.
you and jay head to the café across the road from the studio and sit at the back, next to the fireplace. you opt for a cup of hot chocolate once you settle down next to the warmth of the fire.
the conversation between the two of you flows so smoothly, you talk mostly about work and hobbies you two have, some of which you share. he's much nicer than he appears online and what you've read about him in the interviews that you and yuna have watched together.
"so, i wanted to ask, how do you know sunghoon?" jay asks you, leaning back in his chair, sipping on his coffee. you half dreaded this question being asked to be honest because you still feel bad for ranting to sunghoon about your break up. you were just full of all kinds of emotions and while listening to his music, you kind of just vomited the heartbreak you felt onto him.
"funny story, actually, i'm a really big fan of his music and i used to send him really stupid memes every day and compliment his music whenever he released a cover or an EP. and i went through a very, very horrible break up recently and i told him what i was going through and said that his music was there for me. he responded to me, and he's just been really nice..."
"i'm still at that stage where i can't believe what happened to me and i wonder what i did wrong. i'm still really sad about it but i know i won't feel this way forever, you know.... but yeah, we just kinda became friends? and i owe him a lot for taking my mind off the shit i'm dealing with," you can feel the tears stinging your eyes and before you can wipe them away with your sleeve, jay's offered you a few tissues.
"thank you. uh, he cheated on me," you watched jay's eyes roll as he shook his head, "...with my best friend," as he took another sip of his coffee, he almost choked when you mentioned who he had been cheating on you with.
"what the fuck, are you serious? i'm so sorry, y/n, no one deserves to be cheated on but the fact that it was with your best friend? that's got me really angry, jesus. why can't people just break off the relationship? i'm sorry, y/n. want me to hit him?"
"no, absolutely not, don't waste your energy. i think he's accepted that things are over between us. her on the other hand, not so much."
jay cocks his head to the side, "oh is she one of those people who acts like it's not her fault?"
you nod, "yeah, her behaviour was concerning and it had me worried for myself. she was saying i should forgive her because she wasn't the one who cheated."
jay shakes his head, "is she stupid? who does that? you deserve so much better and one day you will find it. i know it's easier said than done but do not let either of them win, okay?"
"thanks, jay. i appreciate that. i know i'll be okay, it's just trying to come to terms with it and heal from the hurt that's been caused."
"you'll be okay. and i'm a message away if you ever want to talk, y/n."

Chapter 15: The Medium.
Warnings: Swearing, mentions of arson || Word count: 850.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
一Do they realize we can literally see them staring at us?一 Y/N whispered at Jungwon, as he was awkwardly sitting across her in the school’s cafeteria. A few tables away, Sunghoon and Sunoo were gossiping and taking discret (or at least they thought so) looks at the pair. Meanwhile, Jake looked embarrassed, face red as ever, and Riki had not let go of his phone the entire time; Jugnwon thought he was pretending to be busy so no one would catch him spying, such a nosy kid.
一Unfortunately, I don’t think so一 The tarotist quietly replied. 一What did you wanna talk about?一. The girl nervously tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, but still managed to maintain eye contact 一I want to join your club一.
Jungwon choked on his mango juice 一E-excuse me?一 he coughed a few more times, practically hearing how his friends were mocking him a few meters away, Sunoo’s facepalm sounded specially loud. 一Why is that?一.
Y/N gazed at the spectators, not understanding at all their reactions 一Don’t worry, I already know about Riki, you don’t have to cover him一 She explained, even though it was not exactly the reason Jungwon was concerned 一I discovered a few weeks ago that I…一 The girl leaned close, making him mirror her actions, and whispered while bringing her hand to the side of her mouth as to avoid more gossipers to catch on their conversation 一I’m a medium. I can connect with the souls of people’s deceased relatives…一
一Are you fucking insane?!一 The conversation was abruptly interrupted by the sound of a very angry male voice. Jungwon and Y/N stared in horror as Jay held Riki by the uniform's collar. 一Who do you think you are to get us suspended?!一.
Unfazed, the alchemist smirked in the older boy’s hold 一Why are you still here? I thought you and Heeseung would’ve left by now一 He smacked Jay’s hand away from him and raised his eyebrows in a mocking manner 一I guess I didn’t tell enough victims about all the things you’ve done to them behind their backs一.
Y/N ran to Riki’s side and grabbed his arm in a protective manner 一Leave him alone, Jay一. The girl’s presence seemed to make the magician impossibly angrier 一And what are you gonna do if I don’t? Stop being an annoying bitch and get out of the way!一
Jay rummaged inside his pockets, possibly looking for a rune to throw a spell at the girl, but Jungwon was faster, grabbing his arm and positioning himself between Y/N and the magician. 一Leave, now.一 His friends had never seen him like this, speaking in a demanding, almost intimidating tone; his eyes, usually cat-like, had turned into something more dangerous, as if daring the older boy to try confront him. Time seemed to stop as everyone present was holding their breath.
The tension between the boys was cut short, though, as one of the teachers, possibly alerted by a student, started to disperse the small crowd. Jungwon let go of Jay, who opted to leave before his suspension turned into him getting expelled from school.
Back into his usual calm demeanor, as if all the prior events had never occurred, Jungwon turned back to his friends一Are you both alright?一 Riki and Y/N slowly nodded, taken aback by the leader’s unexpected behavior. The girl was still holding onto the youngest’s arm, she shook her head in confusion and frowned at him 一Just, what did you do this time?一.

It was yet another restless night for the now novice medium. As she was recapitulating all that had happened at school today, a small, almost invisible detail was bothering her and causing her mind to go haywire. She had not noticed in the heat of the moment, but she literally held physical contact with Riki for about fifteen minutes, and not even once did she hear a voice.
Why could that be? All her hypotheses were pointing in the same direction, but she just did not want to acknowledge them. You see, Y/N was given an order by the souls of Riki’s past relatives, to “help him find his way”; at first, she could not quite understand its meaning, but after seeing the way he acted at lunch time, she figured that now, the alchemist had found his place in the club and was now creating a new path for himself to walk on. After all that happened, the souls had left him alone.
And why was all this bothering Y/N? Because, if she was correct, it meant her next step was to let Jungwon communicate with his mother, and she would rather do literally anything else. The girl would not admit it out loud, but she was becoming fond of the young tarotist and his friends, which was the reason she gathered courage to join their club.
Y/N really wanted to be their friend, it was not the right time to bring up such a heavy topic, at least not yet. It was not easy, but for now she decided to focus on commiting to the club, and worry about the rest later… or never, yeah, she liked that one better.

10 for the ask? 👀
I don't have a line of dialogue I especially like because I think the goodness of my dialogue comes from context. So have a whole scene.
Jay walked towards the black market’s heart. Every stall but a food court was packed with people selling and bartering. The person occupying it had left his backpack beside her feet in a display of foolishness, or confidence that his reputation made him invulnerable to pickpocketers. The amount of people gravitating towards the opposite side of the alleyway pointed towards the latter. Jay felt tempted to try her hand at pickpocketing to find something to use as leverage during their conversation.
Instead, she sat down on the nearest stool. He did not raise his eyes from his bowl of soup, but his whole body tensed up. He was taller than Jay, but that was no achievement. A few strands of dark curly hair that had escaped his low ponytail framed his sour expression.
“There are plenty of seats away from me.”
Despite the lack of blazing eyes and cement-shattering voice, his presence lived up to Jay’s interpretation of the rumours about the ruin looter.
"That's not the best way to protect your belongings from being stolen but I respect your approach.”
The looter scooped a spoonful of noodles and slurped them. Jay’s answer had managed to surprise him enough to grant her some seconds.
“They could try. They would fail.”
He made it sound like a universal truth. He was not just careless; he was overconfident. A profile Jay had unfortunately dealt with before countless times. She was starting to regret not going for his bag. Infiltrating ruins was not among her skillset, so she would need as much help as she could get. Unfortunately, people who went into ruins and remained alive for long enough to make a living of it were scarce.
“I heard you know about ruins.”
That awarded her a few seconds of eye contact. Larean tradition stated that the eyes betrayed the soul. Jay did not believe in superstition, but even her detective instincts agreed that he must have been soulless. She held his gaze regardless. His body started to betray a smidge of curiosity, which he tried to mask with hostility.
“And you still chose to sit near me.”
Jay smiled to herself. “Should it matter? I couldn't care less about the will of the ancient people.”
The looter raised an accusatory spoon at her. “I thought you cared about everyone’s business.”
Did he know of her identity? She counted on her renown among the aristocracy, but the matters of workers rarely required her services. When people from the underground knew she was a detective it made everything more difficult. They grew distrustful.
“Don’t look so surprised. I heard that a great detective arrived in the city. It was about time before some self-righteous fanatic sent you after me. Back off now, I don’t enjoy hurting people.”
He had her motive completely wrong. Jay opted to be straightforward with the truth. He did not seem like he enjoyed meaningless conversation.
“Noone has sent me after you. My beliefs contradict those of the Red Hand Faith. I have come of my own volition to seek your cooperation for a case.” This appeared to shock him out of his defensive disposition. “Given how up to date you are with rumours, you must have heard about the cult that has taken control of one of the ruins. I have been tasked with dismantling it. I suppose it is bad for your business if they forbid you from accessing it. Besides, the pay will be good and shared equally, aside from any pieces you can get for the market.”
The looter eyed her for a moment longer and returned to his bowl.
“I couldn't care less. There are other places I can access, and I highly doubt they control all the entrances. Besides, they will be forced to abandon it soon enough.”
That was inconvenient.
“If a group of people are so interested in that ruin to betray the values of every single major tradition, it is because there is something valuable there. Better get it out yourself before they handle it improperly and it loses value or breaks.”
“I don’t care about the money.” The looter did not even consider her words before dismissing them. “I’m self sufficient. Now, let me eat in peace or I’ll make the cook kick you out.”
Not an option. Jay raised her hand and ordered a bowl of noodles for herself. The cook eyed his other client, who just continued eating noodles. In the end, business was business and having a single client was unprofitable. He took a bundle of noodles from a stick above the pot and dunked them in. With a satisfied smile, Jay turned towards the looter again.
“Let’s negotiate.”
His only answer was loud slurping. There was still half a bowl left. Plenty of time.
“I could pull some strings to make people respect you.”
The looter shot her a look of disdain.
“Do I look like I care about what people think?”
“You look like it would save you some trouble,” she answered pointing with her eyes at a bruise on his cheek, presumably from his altercation with the Red Hand.
He tilted his head to hide it.
“I am not going to compromise with those fanatics.”
Jay’s bowl of soup arrived right in time to interrupt a brewing argument. It smelled meaty and sweet. She drank a spoonful of broth. The spiciness was just on point.
“It’s really good,” she told the cook, who for lack of anything else to do was waiting for her opinion.
A hum of agreement escaped the looter. He had it in him to not sound menacing. Jay could not resist the urge to dig deeper.
“I will invite you to a bowl or two if you help me solve the case.”
His eyes did betray him with the hint of a smile this time. He frowned deeper with a mumbled “no way”. The broody looter who could not be bought with money nor fame could be tempted with noodles. She wondered what other simple things could tempt him, but first she would let him eat in peace.
They ate in silence. People passing by stared at her, stealing a few glances of the looter. They would immediately scatter once the cook, desperate for some clientele, made eye contact. Soon, the looter lifted the bowl to his lips and emptied it. Before it hit the table again, Jay spoke.
“There must be something you want. I can offer almost anything. A good weapon, resistant clothing, a beautiful-”
The looter cut her off with a glare and stood up.
“I want freedom. And whatever you offer means compromise.”
“In that case, feel free to show up at the Giant’s Pouch if you’re curious about what is happening with the ruins.”
He stood in silence, picking up his backpack from the floor and adjusting it on his back. He turned and started walking away. Jay was getting mentally ready to find another means of information when he stopped as if he had forgotten something.
“The tab is on you, rich girl,” he said before continuing his path through the street.

Chapter 2a: Two uncommon strangers.

For options A and C || wc: 1k.
—Ready for physics?— Sunghoon tried to start a conversation, opting to ignore the way your eyes threatened to close; he knew that you would get mad at him for pointing it out or nagging about your messed up sleep schedule, and the least he wanted was to worsen your morning mood.
—Is that even a question?—. You eyed him up and down with a frown when he reached out to grab your bag, you were well aware of how much he cared about you, but there was no need for him to pity you to this extent, it only made you feel pathetic —Of course not, I don’t think anyone but Lily is ready for today— you said, glancing at your pink-haired friend who just nodded.
—Still…— he gestured for everyone to start walking —Don’t lose hope just yet, you barely arrived and the day is still young— he had a point, but mornings had always put you in a gloomy mood that you had not yet learned how to control —Who knows? Something completely life-changing could happen at any moment of the day—.
—How do you even manage to be so positive this early?—.
—Someone has to do it, this place would fall apart if all of us were as pessimistic as you—.
—Are you implying that I’m the problem?—.
Sunghoon shook his head, not quite believing his ears —No! All I’m trying to say is that no matter how sad you are, I’ll find a way to cheer you up because that’s what friends do…— he looked at you, almost bumping into a few people in the process. His motivational speech was cut short, as your group arrived at the classroom; he could clearly tell Gaeul was making fun of him inside her head just from the way she looked at him from behind your back, but it was not important anymore, physics was at the top of everyone’s worries right now.
Guided by Lily, who always wanted to take the front seats, you and your friends started occupying the usual chairs, but just as you were about to sit beside Sunghoon, a boy you had never seen before placed his bag on the desk and sat beside him without even looking at you.
You blinked a few times to process what had just happened, opting to sit between this unfamiliar person and Gaeul. You noticed how there was another student sitting beside Sunghoon on the opposite side and sparing glances at him as if the two guys were caging him.
—Good morning, class— the teacher spoke, immediately making all chatter come to a halt —I have graded the tests from last week— ah, yes, the words no one wanted to hear; except Lily, of course —And also, two students have transferred recently, Jay Park and Jake Sim— the strangers who were sitting beside your friend raised their hands when their respective names were called —Let’s make them feel welcome, okay?—.
A murmur of unanimous agreement was heard, but you could tell something smelled fishy, and it was surely not the teacher’s cologne this time. You looked at Gaeul and Lily, who were coincidentally staring back at you as if you had an explanation; the younger girl had an unusually tense posture, holding so tightly onto her pen that you feared it would break in two any second now. As for the black-haired girl, she was just plain confused like you and poor Sunghoon, who glanced at you as if asking for an emergency rescue; you could not blame him, you would have freaked out too if two strangers had suddenly cornered you and were not-so-discretely analyzing you.
There was something unsettling about the way those two guys shared smirks and quick glances, it almost seemed like they were having a mental conversation. Suddenly, the guy named Jake, who was sitting beside you, turned his head in your direction and raised an eyebrow in a questioning manner —Is there something wrong with my hair?—. Was he calling you out for staring? How did he even notice? Were you being too obvious? Well, most likely, since you had not taken your eyes off them since class started.
—Sorry!— you decided it was not time to act like the suspicious one, and opted to play dumb —It’s just that we don’t usually see new students around here, so I was surprised…— you had no idea whether it would be too soon to try to get close to them, but something about those strangers was attracting you to their orbit like a magnet. —I’m Y/N, by the way—.
—Jake, well, you already know that— both of you exchanged fake laughs out of politeness, the air was so dense it almost felt like you were about to see the awful results of an important physics test… wait a minute.
—You did well, miss, but I know you can do better— the teacher spoke, interrupting the conversation and placing your test on the desk. Well, at least you passed, Sunghoon would have been so proud of your positive thinking.
And speaking of Sunghoon, who would have known that, indeed, something completely life-changing could happen on a random Wednesday morning? Lily had not spared a single glance at her test, she was still holding onto her pen for dear life and something about her strange behavior was ringing alarms in your head because you trusted her intuition more than anything, and if her entire body language was telling you that something was super wrong about those two boys, then who were you to ignore the warning?
But at the same time, deep inside you knew that trying to avoid them would not lead you anywhere, you had to take the risk —Hey, Jake, and Jay too— you called, trying to ignore the fact that both guys were fighting back smiles as if they knew the conversation would turn in this direction anytime soon —Mind if we have lunch together?—.

Grant-Lee Phillips Interview: A Great Deal of Shared Experience
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Singer-songwriter Grant-Lee Phillips was one of many artists who released an album during the pandemic that ended up being prescient. No, it’s not an obvious foreshadowing. His 10th studio album wasn’t titled anything having to do with masks or distancing or viruses. But the idea of his daughter screaming, “Come on lightning, show us your stuff” and the words resonating with Phillips enough to name an album after it is strangely consistent with that increased rediscovery of “the small things” many of us experienced over a time where we needed to stay separate from other people. It’s the immediate surroundings of nature that grounded Phillips when, after being forced to promote Lightning, Show Us Your Stuff via livestream only, he decided to give up dreams of touring any time soon and sit and write new material. Used to writing on the road with what he calls “a proper balance of stimulation and boredom,” Phillips opted for daily drives to the Tennessee countryside with his family to generate that previously missing sense of motion. They also gave him solace in the face of what was happening globally--a pandemic--and nationally, the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election and the January 6th, 2021 Insurrection.
Phillips slowly got used to writing from home and ended up churning out the songs that would eventually make up his 11th studio album All That You Can Dream, released last month via Yep Roc. Obviously, at the time of writing, the events of January 6th were top of mind and ended up inspiring songs like “Rats in a Barrel” and “Peace Is a Delicate Thing”. On the latter, Phillips compares peace to “snow on the ground,” as if the very concept that we take for granted is seasonal, dependent on who’s in power at the time. The general horrors of the Trump administration and its role as the beginning of the end rather than a blip inspire “Cut to the Ending” and “My Eyes Have Seen”, the latter specifically referring to the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. The overall trauma of the past few years manifested in “Cannot Trust The Ground”, whose title refers to the modes of thought of someone who has lived through earthquakes but makes the case that our collective societal turmoil is somewhat of a quake itself. Phillips also wrote songs for the people he spent most of his time with--himself and his family--in the form of “You Can’t Hide” and “Remember This”, the latter dedicated to his teenage daughter.
Once he had the songs written, Phillips reached out to many of his usual collaborators--drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Jennifer Condos, keyboardist Jamie Edwards, pedal steel guitarist Eric Heywood, and cellist Richard Dodd--to add more sonic elements to the songs. (Phillips produced, recorded, engineered, and mixed the record at his Nashville home.) The pump organ of “Peace Is a Delicate Thing” gives it a nostalgic quality, as if Phillips is nostalgic for a bygone era where the entirety of American society wasn’t constantly under threat of violence. The subtle drum rumbles below the gentle acoustic guitar picking on “Cannot Trust the Ground” perfectly mirror the song’s sentiment. But as usual, the basis of the songs are as solo arrangements on acoustic guitar, and that’s why now, when Phillips is able to finally tour again, he’s still playing solo. “It’s something I’m at ease with,” he told me over the phone last month. “I can go to musical places--emotional places--on my own. That’s kind of where this material is formed. The moment conception takes place on a couch at home, or changing my strings in a hotel room in a foreign country. To carry that straight through to the final performance makes sense when you think about it.”
Phillips plays Friday night at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Read our conversation below, edited for length and clarity.
Tumblr media
Since I Left You: The songs on All That You Can Dream are born out of such a specific time and place, written in somewhat of an isolation. Is it sort of weird to play them to an audience?
Grant-Lee Phillips: No, I wouldn’t say so. I feel like this is a situation where we’ve had a lot of shared experiences, be it isolation or anxiety. All of these things that have driven us inward back into our homes and minds. Even beyond language [barriers], there’s a great deal of shared experience. And it’s not as though we’re out of the woods. I’d love to believe we were. But I think the residue and trauma of what we went through is something we’ll be working through for some time, as well as the reality that we live in a time where we could see another rise of variants or you name it. It’s an unsettling era we’re existing in.
SILY: You’re used to turning back songs that have layers and elements into the solo performance they were born out of. But were there any unique challenges in doing that with this particular batch of songs?
GLP: Not especially. I have a different relationship to them. It’s like bringing them up as children, as seedlings of ideas or sketches. There are so many points in time where they could have gone a different way that only I’m privy to. The listener knows the composition as a layered, sonic experience, but it doesn’t really throw me to play a song like “All That You Can Dream” even though the album version is based in the piano and the production I apply to the arrangement. I guess I’m always kind of aware of that. Even with Grant Lee Buffalo, we had to be aware of who we were on an album and who we were on stage. In hindsight, I’ve come to realize the distinction wasn’t so different. You can go back and get it right on a record, I guess, but sometimes, you would chase your tail trying to find what would happen spontaneously when you stepped on a stage and plugged in. All of these musicians are chasing after that perfect way to get the song and the track.
SILY: There are a few songs here about Jan 6, 2021. You talk about history and our ideas and awareness (or lack thereof) of history repeating itself. On “Rats in a Barrel”, you sing, “I’m done with mercy / I’m all tapped out.” Do you find you have empathy fatigue for certain groups of people that participated in such activities?
GLP: I have to think about that. My feeling is that there are lots of people who have, for their own reasons, believed in things that were untrue and not to their benefit. The values of those who thought they were doing the patriotic thing of that day. I don’t have an omnipotent view of everyone who was there and who played a role in that. I think we’re only beginning to get a sense of those at the core and the planning and who would gain the most from retaining power. That is yet to be revealed, which is a very frustrating place to be for a lot of us in this country. The feeling that justice is delayed if absent for those who should be held accountable. Meanwhile, down here on the ground, where all of us live and do our work, justice comes quite rapidly, for the person with a broken taillight or outdated registration. Some of that frustration is the kind of thing that actually fuels such resentment, but where does that resentment go? It festers, and tragically, that very resentment--which is real and grounded in reality at times--is used to wrangle the mob against their own interests and certainly against the interests of a democratic society, a country that should be lifting one another up. But I’m very concerned. I lose a lot of sleep over it.
SILY: I was struck on “Cut To The Ending” when you sing, “History is told by an old man / Who survived the wars / Little talk of spineless enablers / Ones who held the door.” Why do you think we tend to forget the enablers of bad history?
GLP: Oh, gosh. There’s a point in time where the generations that experienced the atrocity no longer walk the earth. We live in a time where it’s almost criminal to impart or teach history, in [worlds] of strongmen and despots. You can see the way a society turns to a person who seems to have all the answers and like a steamroller plows over everyone who comes in their way and challenges their power. There was a story that I read how in the shadow of Mussolini, [Italy] looked towards him as a symbol of strength and masculinity, and many young men carried a picture of him in their pocket. Whether they did literally or not, that was the image of who a person they [thought they] should be. Might was always right. When it came to Hitler, the tragic mantra was always, “We can control him. We can use this guy and the numbers he has behind him and the impetus to exploit him.” What a tragic mantra. Those who hold the door and hang on to their little slipper of power, they too will come to realize they made decisions that weren’t in their best interest in the long term. That’s what that song is about. “Cut To The Ending” as if we’re watching another horror film where we know what’s gonna happen. You know what’s gonna happen when you mix certain chemicals.
SILY: When you sing, “A fool won’t listen to reason / Till he’s gone too far,” I thought of all the stories of unvaccinated folks in the hospital, previously adamant about not getting vaccinated, dying from COVID and begging nurses to give them the shot and the nurses saying, “Sorry, I can’t give it to you.”
GLP: The thought that there are so many who might have survived this period, the first, second, third waves of this pandemic had it not become so tribal: That’s beyond tragic. I’m not one to leap into every opportunity to get a vaccination. I’m not an anti-vaxxer, but even the flu shot, I think, “What is it? Do I have to get it?” I understand apprehension, especially when it comes to a situation they’re not used to. But the Trump administration did us no favors in how it was dealt with. I feel like the health officials were very slow to act. On one hand, it’s a miracle we have been able to develop vaccines, but we were told by officials, “Don’t wear a mask.” We were condescended to in that fashion. Though she defends her position, [former White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator] Dr. [Deborah] Birx was quick to pat Trump on the back about his head for details and not her own head as he blathered onward about bleach and lightbulbs and whatever else he was on about. I think that was a real low moment. I think people died because of it. What can you say? I don’t judge people who make those decisions--I have compassion for anyone who is being ripped off or hoodwinked. I feel like there’s been a lot of that.
SILY: On “My Eyes Have Seen”, you talk about the horrors of WWII and the border during the Trump administration. But I can’t help but think that the irony of that song is there’s still so much our eyes haven’t seen.
GLP: That’s true. That’s a good observation. My inspiration was pretty firmly planted in the border crisis. I hadn’t thought of the other implications you hit upon. But I think you can most certainly see parallels anywhere where people are targeted and become refugees of their own country, as is the case in Ukraine, or wherever. But the things that we don’t see is such a good point. We lived through the war in Iraq, and so much of that was really hidden from us as well. You don’t want to even entertain those thoughts--you want to believe the government is doing the right thing and that, “We’re the good guys.” But it hasn’t always been the case.
SILY: This record’s certainly not all political. A few tracks are strictly personal to you. Take the sentiment of “You Can Hide”, for instance, “You can’t hide no more than the sun or moon can hide.” Is that an oddly comforting message to yourself, or more of a warning?
GLP: That is very much a song to myself. I share it hoping it will strike a chord for someone else. But there is sort of a double meaning. We can’t hide from all of the things we’ve previously discussed. That is the world we live in. But we can’t hide from our nature to find joy and to laugh and be communal, [either]. All of these impulses to protect ourselves to be on guard against threat, but to socialize and pull together is in us, too. Sometimes, those very beautiful human impulses are exploited. The desire to respond as a group and marshal such power when we truly need to. That song is about those things, and also about trying to pull myself out of my dark place. It’s easy to go there and not want to come out.
SILY: You have a song for your daughter on here where you reference disagreements. You talk a lot politically about not thinking the same way as someone else, but the way you talk about it with your daughter, it’s more loving. How do you balance these different perspectives?
GLP: As a teenager, you’re trying to establish your independence. That’s that tug of war. It was nice to spend time off the road with my daughter, helping her with her homework, brushing up on the things I didn’t pay attention to the first time around. That’s one of the lyrics in that song: “We don’t always think the same / Not a crime to disagree.” And that is true, especially in that context. We have to find ourselves and make our own mistakes and come to our own conclusions, perform our own experiments. She’s preoccupied with traipsing through the woods and setting traps for lizards, and I’m the one saying, “Watch out for ticks!” That’s a different context than the political disagreements we [all] have. In the arena of social media, it’s difficult to have the kinds of conversations that would produce meaningful understanding. It’s kind of like Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots on Twitter, trying to get the last word in. You just follow the people that seem fairly balanced and insightful. There’s plenty to disagree with. I open up Twitter in the morning, and it’s like sticking my head in a furnace. The fire singes my eyebrows off, and I begin another day.
SILY: These songs were written a couple years ago. What else is next for you? Are you currently working on anything?
GLP: Someone from [Yep Roc] brought it to my attention that it was 20 months ago that I released my last record. These days, the thing that takes the longest is the packaging and manufacturing, especially vinyl. In the case of this record, that took many, many months. We finished it 9 months in advance to get everything lined up. I’ve been a prolific writer. I began writing this album a few months after the last one came out. I worked on it through the winter and spring, and by early summer, I handed it into the record company. We began figuring out how long it would take. It was a long time. So at this point, I anticipate more touring. Hopefully I’ll be back in Europe in December, possibly on the West Coast in the fall. I have some intriguing concerts in the coming year in France and the UK. I think in some ways I’m at the point where I want to savor touring and performing and playing all the songs I’ve recorded lately.
SILY: Is there anything you’ve been listening to, watching, or reading lately that’s caught your attention?
GLP: I’ve been really taken with Angel Olsen. I’ve got a couple different biographies to read. I’m also reading a [Geoffrey R. Stone’s] Sex and the Constitution, which is about sexuality and how it was dealt with going back to the Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Middle Ages, and the influence of Saint Augustine onward. How we got to this point in time where Supreme Court judges cite witch-burning jurors from 300 years ago to make the judgements of the day. [laughs] Good light reading.

You had known Jake for more than half of your lives. Thanks to both of your rich ass parents setting you two up for a playdate at the age of 12, now you have found your rock and partner in crime. You know when he's feeling down, when he wants to cause trouble for no reason, when he has an eye for someone, heck, you know when and how to get him out of any situation when needed.
Like right now, as he gives you a side glance as he talks boringly to a group of men. All they talked about was business. Jake wanted to talk about that one burrito place down the block, he wants to get out of there and go get some. He wants to get out of this stupid high class party he has no part of.
He knows you do too, he knows by the way you keep glancing at the back door by the kitchen, and how you occasionally move to each group closer to the door. You know he catches up to the plan, how he also moves from group to group, excusing himself every 2 minutes.
You politely excuse yourself from the many unknown rich aunts who just questioned your love life, giving them a very passive smile, before turning to move to another group.
You don't get to go to another group, because you're already so close to the door, and Jake approaches you.
"Why, hello there, miss Y/n."
You feign shock at his greeting, holding a hand to your chest, "My, Jaeyun, wasn't it? It's been too long!"
Your best friend nods, playing along to the small skit you two have created, "About 2 hours, I think? You've grown very beautifully,"
You flick your hand at him, nudging his shoulder not-so-gently, "Oh stop."
You bite your lip to hold back a loud laugh when Jake winces at your harsh push at his shoulder, watching as his face twists in playful anger. You can't help but thin he looks absolutely adorable, nose scrunched up and eyes narrowed in a non meaningful glare, you ought to kiss his puffed cheeks.
You shake the last thought from your mind, bringing the elegant glass of champagne to your lips, sipping lightly at the sweet and slightly sour liquid. You then take a double check around the spacious room, to see if anyone is watching.
Your mother and father were chatting at the far corner with the parents of Jay, a guy you met earlier this evening. He looked just as bored as you. Jake's parents stood not too far from your parents, greeting anyone who approached them.
This was your chance.
Quickly, as Jake was mumbling something about you growing up strongly as well, you grab his arm. He yelps in surprise, as you drag him through the back door, lightly blushing at your gentle touch at his wrist.
The back door soon slams behind the both of you, and you are met with a large yard.
"Y/n! What if someone caught us?"
Giving Jake a side glare, you start to trudge down the flight of stairs to the garden, "You were too busy complaining about my guns to notice we had a chance to escape. You're welcome."
"You're weak!"
"Am not!"
"Are to!"
You ignore the upcoming argument you could've started, taking off your painful heels. They were absolutely stunning, but stung your feet constantly. Beauty is pain, as mother says.
"Lead the way to the burrito truck you claimed to see on the way here!"
Through the many bushes, and many guards, and even more bushes, you finally make it out the the big mansion, and into the dark streets. It's 10 in the night, you hope the burrito place is still open or your only choice left is a McDonalds about an hour away or convenience store food. Not that you minded, but you haven't had a burrito since you were 18. You had it right after graduation day with one of your closes friends who you have no idea of her whereabouts now.
The last time Jake had a burrito is about last week, the first time he met another rich kid named Sunghoon. Their parents gave them a bunch of money to go spend on expensive and top quality foods, but they both mutually agreed to get cheap burritos that would probably give them a bad stomach.
Jake takes the lead, as expected, for he was the one who spotted the food truck. He took off his blazer some time ago, you don't remember when, but with his jacket thrown over his elbow and sleeves rolled up like that, you can't help but admire.
You notice every single little thing about him, his slow, rhythmic paces, occasionally kicking stray rocks on the sidewalk. You watch as his hair slightly bounces as he kicks yet another rock, and you want to pet his hair.
There was that one time when you were 16 and you had a movie night as your parents went away for some business, he had his head on your lap, you didn't mind for some reason. At some point you had started playing lightly with a few strands of his hair, but you didn't notice. The moment you softly ran your hands through his hair, you realized, and decided to keep your hands to yourself after that. To your surprise he protested against it, claiming it was very comforting. So now every time one of you come over to the other's house, you would somehow find yourself playing with his hair, like pure human instinct.
But now as you observed your best friend more, you have a different feeling running through you as you had an urge to softly play with them once more, as if it wasn't as platonic anymore. But that was absurd. you've been friends for 10 years now, why are you just feeling like this now?
Your heart jumps in your chest when you are suddenly met with Jake's eyes, shining brightly with a slight mischievous gloss glazing over them. "Can we pick up the pace please? I'm getting pretty hungry and I know you are too."
Your heart softens as he sticks his arm out, gesturing you to come next to him. You jog barefoot to his side, instantly looping your arm with his.
It doesn't take long to find the food truck Jake mentioned, just a 10 minutes from the mansion, somewhere near the center of town. You had to drive about 2 hours to get here, and so did Jake, so it's a bit strange how he knew his way around the town so easily. You guess he just is that way.
You practically drool at the smell of savory foods that lingers in the air, sucking the saliva in your mouth.
Your best friend eyes you playfully, nudging your hip with his, "See? What did I tell you? Burrito food truck!"
You don't respond, simply grunting and dragging him to the cashier to order some food.
It takes a lot of time to decide on what burrito you'd buy, there were even tacos, and weirdly, cookies and croissants. It was your dream food truck, really. In the end, you both went for the classic burrito, nothing could beat it.
There were no seats to the food truck, sadly, so you and Jake opted to sit on the curb, legs sprawled out on the road, hopefully no cars drive by.
"You ready?" Your best friend asks you, looking at you with much anticipation. You stare at your own burrito in much more anticipation, it's been 4 years since you had a burrito. You wonder how you could survive that long.
You nod vivaciously, already opening your mouth to take a bite. Jake chuckles as he watches you take your first bite, your cheeks instantly puffing out full of the contents. You shut your eyes in bliss, licking your lips for anything left on them.
As you continue to chew, you shake your head, "Shit, I haven't had anything this good in sooo long." You exaggerate, taking yet another bite of the heavenly treat.
Jake can't agree more, he just had a burrito last week, but somehow eating one with you feels different. Especially when you don't mind him seeing and pointing out the smeared food around your mouth, simply trying to search for it with your tongue instead.
Your best friend wants to cherish this moment forever, keep it deep in his heart and laugh at it in the future when he suddenly gets reminded of it, he wants to brag about it to his friends, maybe even share it with his grandchildren, he doesn't know. All he knows is that you're it for him.
You're the one he's spent all of his teenage years with, his first heartbreak, first sleepover, first drink was with you, heck, you were his first close friend!
You know so much about him, you share so much about yourself to him, he's the one you trust. He's the first person you call out to when you're down, first person you call out to in the best of your times. It amazing how much you've been through together, and Jake thinks anything is possible, as long as it's you.
Falling in love seems so much easier than ever, especially at that moment, eating a burrito instead of the expensive caviar at the party before, just with him. And nobody else.
He wants to make you his. Not just his best friend, his lover, his soul mate, his whole world. Not that you weren't already.
"What's wrong?" you suddenly ask Jake, startling him. "You nudge your chin at the burrito in his hands, "Why aren't you eating?"
Jake flushes, realizing he's been staring at you the whole time, taking a big bite of his burrito, before looking away bashfully. "It's nothing."
You grow suspicious of his actions, watching as he swallows and bites his lip shyly. You choose to leave it there, instead bringing up your parents being out of town next week.
The conversation keeps going, from one topic to the other, swerving all over the place, but that's just how it is, talking to the person you're most comfortable with.
The conversation goes on and on until you find yourself walking along the streets blindly, fiddling with the paper packaging of the burrito you ate. You also find yourself wearing Jake's shoes instead of walking barefoot, he gave to you after you complained about walking over so many rocks, and you didn't like how your heart swarmed and beat dangerously fast as he claimed it would be better if you borrowed them for the night.
Strangely enough, his blazer he took off about and hour ago now stayed on your shoulders, keeping you warm from the cold breezes of the night. All your best friend's actions made you swoon over him, and that wasn't something you would feel often. Maybe occasionally, but not everyday.
Jake doesn't know what got into him when he took his shoes off for you, or when he draped his blazer on your shoulders, or why he took your heels and held it for you. What he does know, is that he enjoys the way your lips purse and a light shade of pink dusted over your cheeks. Or how you pull his blazer tighter around your body and sub-consciously loop your arm around his again.
You two never really got to go through the proper high school experience, your parents forced you to go to a strict school with strict rules, they didn't even have celebrations.
Jake always imagines what it would be like to go to a dance, prom, maybe? Full of fun, dancing, and definitely you. You had a similar vision. Chugging down punch or soda and dancing crazily together until you both get sick and throw up in the bathroom.
Prom was like a mutual yearning for the both of you.
God, how you would kill to have a normal high school experience.
"You know," Jake starts, "this feels like I'm walking you home after prom."
You can't stop the grin from reaching your lips, giving into it and letting out a soft laugh. Softly, you elbow his side, "Corny."
There are a few laughs here and there after that, but overall just comforting silence that goes throughout the night. The crickets that echo throughout the night are your only noises, and the few cars rushing by. You two come to a stop at a random bench by a streetlamp, settling there until you realize it's time to go back to the party.
You realize it, but you just don't want to let go of the moment.
You feel Jake hook his leg under yours, swinging them together in sync as you rest and stare into the night sky. Tonight isn't that much of a pretty night, no stars, barely a moon, but that's alright, you're enjoying the most of it.
You turn your head away from the boring black sky, instead facing the mot interesting thing you find in life. Jake is staring down at your swinging legs, smiling at the sight. He fiddles softly with your fingers, caressing and tracing them as if they were one of the most precious things in the world.
Your eyes trail from your tangled legs, to your tangled hands, all the way up to Jake's face, tracing each and every detail with your gaze. You don't remember when he matured, you only remember the fluffy cheeked bowl cut Jake when you two were still middle schoolers. Now all that cheek has become more defined, especially his jaw, you can't help but admire him. He was like a piece of art. Your favorite piece of art.
For the second time that night, you focus on his hair, and ought to run your hands through them once again. To pull him into your embrace as he rests on you, to simply relax and twirl his strands around your fingers.
It seems like whenever you're staring at his hair, Jake just startles you with his eyes, still glossy, but this time they hold something different.
They admire you just as much as yours admire him.
Slowly, as if an unspoken agreement, you lean in closer to his face. His breath close to your cheek sets goosebumps trailing your body, and his touch now on your neck warms you inside.
Your eyes flit between his eyes and lips, oh those plump, soft lips you dream of. You would never admit it, but you have had many urges to crash your own upon them.
And that's exactly what you do. Though, crash isn't the right word to describe it. They press together softly more than recklessly, pulling into a soft lock, something much more than just platonic love being poured into it. Pure bliss and love are being poured like gentle and calm rivers, the ones you find clear and beautiful in parks. It runs faster as Jake tilts your head to kiss you closer, lips wrapped up in the warmth of yours. It feels like home to him.
Jake is absolutely perfect, you decide, despite all the many nights spent together breaking down, left for each other to pick the other up, it makes him perfect.
He thinks you're the most flawless thing he's ever seen, despite all the gems and crystals he sees in most parties, you're the brightest one shining, he could never find any jewel more valuable than you.
You pull away with one last soft lock of your lips, but stay close and ghost them together. You find his eyes the shining the most you have ever seen in the 10 years you have spent with him, one different emotion fluttering behind them. Love.
You surely don't feel that big of a person when you're at these big rich parties, even if everyone knew of your name. But kissing your best friend and being the one he sees, he loves, being his, you feel like you could rule the world.
You know you're his after this. How could you not? The way he breaks out into a very bashful smile when you leave one last peck on his lips, the way he holds you so close. There was no way he couldn't be yours after this.
A week later you have a very sleepy boyfriend on your couch, his head resting on your lap as you play softly with his hair. Nothing is all that different, except for all the kisses he steals when reaching up to you. And of course, the corny lines being thrown at each other as a competition to see who can come up with the cheesiest, most disgusting pick up line ever.
"I want to wrap you in my arms and make you my baerito."
"Ugh Jake that was just straight but bad! Not even funny or cheesy!"
Jake simply laughs, and wraps his arms around you just as he claimed to have wanted to, mumbling how he agreed into your forehead.
Being in his arms, you feel like you could fight everything that would try to hurt your lover, but for now you stick to the playful pokes he gives to your stomach and sides.

Like Unrequited
Tumblr media
Part ONE | Part TWO | Part THREE | Part FOUR
pairing : heeseung x fem!reader / sunghoon x fem!reader
genre : angst/fluff. bulleted.
warnings : unrequited crush. slight feelings of awkwardness and abandonment. ambiguous relationship though - especially towards the end.
summary : how to confess to someone who doesn’t feel the same.
Tumblr media
‘I like you, Heeseung’
All you could see was his eyes
How they enlarged at the words you just spluttered
He hesitated
And at that the world seemed to rush down your throat and rob you of the air in your lungs
Uh.
But still the hope in your stomach flickered like a small fire
A small pathetic little fire
‘I-I….I don’t see you in that way Y/N...I’m sorry.’
Heeseung didn’t smile as he said that
But he squeezed at your shoulder to anchor you down to the reality of it all
You liked Heeseung
And he didn’t like you back
All those teenage movies you watched in an attempt to motivate you seemed to laugh at you
All those beautiful actresses and all those beautiful actors planting the seed of false hope in the victims of love unrequited
‘That’s okay?’
You smiled.
I’m sure you’ve never seen yourself wear the most bullshit smile you’ve ever bullshitted
Heeseung smacked his lips together and warmly smiled at you
‘I’ll see you at school tomorrow, okay?’
Uh.
‘..Maybe. I might just, uh- hang out in the library for a while.’
He grimaced at that
He didn’t want to make you feel as if you weren’t friends
He didn’t want to say ‘friends tho, right?’ as some sort of compensation for your feelings he didn’t share
He felt for you
He loved you (in a way that was only platonic)
And yet-
‘Okay.’
The next day Heeseung had waved at you whilst flanked by the other boys and Ryujin at his side
Jungwon hugged you and asked if you were coming to lunch
‘Nope,’
‘BOOO,’  Niki shouted in Sunoo’s ear
‘What about tomorrow then? I’ve still got that post I want you to see in person’ Jay whined.
‘I dunno I’ll let you know though.’
Ryujin squeezed your hand as she followed you down the hallway away from the boys
‘How was it?’ Ryujin bit her lip with her sympathetic eyes
You shook your head
‘Imma need time. I think.’
‘Okay. Don’t be a stranger.’
Ryujin smiled and hugged you tightly, ‘It’s just one guy, my buddy.’
‘A guy I just happen to like and who’s kind and who I used to gush about for hours on end and-’
‘I was trying to lighten the mood, but my bad,’ Ryujin chuckled a little before letting you go
‘Mhmm’
With a final goodbye you dawdled to the library with your assignments and errands listed in your head for you to do
You took a seat and dug through your bag for your books and pencil case filled with pens and highlighters and got to working
You spent what felt like hours in the library, filling in gaps and writing down notes that you’ve been holding off for what felt like weeks
You sighed as you flicked out your wrist in an attempt to dissipate your pen cramp
That’s when the antics of two boys called your attention
They whispered heatedly between the two of them as they fussed over their written notes and their bags
‘Out of all days, you’re cramming now?’
‘I didn’t know it was due today and you didn’t either!’
‘You don’t even have a pen-’
You giggled to yourself and that had the boys look over to you sheepishly
‘Hey,’
‘Can I borrow a pen?’
You grinned and nodded, pulling out a pen of your pencil case
‘Oh my god. Why aren’t you this helpful?’
‘Fuck you.’
After awhile as they had written down all their points and you had gone back to your work, giggling a little at their quips
‘Here’s your pen. Thanks, really.’
‘No worries...what test is it for?’
‘This science research test. I’m not prepared for it, obviously. But Jake is.’
Sunghoon had explained, cocking his head toward Jake
Jake giggled in reply
‘In that case, you may as well keep the pen.’
Sunghoon grinned
‘Thank you. Do you want the pen back?’
‘I’m not sure about today.. but that could change.’
Meanwhile in the background, Jake smirked at your little exchange, preparing to tell all his and Sunghoon’s friends about his little conversation with a pretty girl in the library
The next few days were spent with Sunghoon and Jake
They had an assignment due that next Wednesday
You had your errands
But as the hours and the days flew by, the time spent actually working on your studies depleted and they were spent getting to know each other
They both gave your their number and you gave yours
You started making plans for after school and weekends
Ryujin wanted you to come to a party with her on Saturday (the boys were going to be there too and Sunoo was missing you)
But you had plans (with Sunghoon)
You started missing phone calls from your friends because you were busy spending time with Sunghoon.
You told Sunghoon and Jake all about your attempt at confessing and that had set Jake off on a tangent about how stupid the guy was and Sunghoon had opted to hold your hand
Your library hangouts had turned into ‘hangouts’ and extended outside of the library
And one day you were with Sunghoon and Jake on the lunch table, smiling at their antics and their whatever-the-fuck-they-were-doing
‘Y/N!’
You turned towards the voice, Sunghoon and Jake following you too
Sunoo reached towards you and hugged you
‘Feel like I never see you, like ever.’
‘I miss you.’
‘Me too,’ You smile.
You looked over at Heeseung and your smile failed a little bit at the way he held a girl’s hand in his
‘Hey,’ He smiled, feeling a little awkward at the revelation of his new girlfriend/friend/fling?
Truthfully he didn’t know who she was
But he wanted to find out
He was also confused at the new friends of yours
Jungwon walked over to you, looking at Sunghoon confusedly, ‘I didn’t know you knew Y/N.’
‘Surprise’
Sunghoon watched as you struggled to gain the confidence to introduce them to your other friends
He reached over and grabbed your hand in his, offering a small smile ‘I’m Sunghoon’
‘Jake’
‘I haven’t seen you in awhile my girl,’ Ryujin said, toe tapping your ankle
‘Sorry, I’ve been with these two this whole time. Super busy.’
Everyone frowns at your short sentence and your sudden uncomfortableness with the whole group in front of you, your easygoingness replaced with something that felt foreign to them
That didn’t really change throughout the week
The only one that really got the same response from you was Sunoo and even that was tampered with
You smiled in front of Sunghoon and Jake like you’re usual
Jungwon, Heeseung, Niki, Jay and Ryujin could only look on as you seemed to distance yourself from them all
Jay still had that one post he had to show you but when he had shown it too
You had pursed your lips in reply and looked at Jake with a secretive smile that you used to use with him
But you smiled at Jay and hugged him goodbye
They weren’t happy (meaning Heeseung and pals)
You did miss your friends
But-
You were happy with Sunghoon and Jake.
Very happy.
Heeseung sighed at the way you branched off with your new friends, leaving him and Ryujin in the dust
‘Okay, I can’t fucking do this anymore,’
Ryujin swore and turned towards him
‘You need to fucking say something. Because I’m sick and tired of being ignored by my best fucking friend in exchange for two boys. Two hot boys, but still boys nonetheless.’
Heeseung sighed at that
He did, didn’t he
So with a bated breath, he approached you when you were alone
No Sunghoon or Jake
Just you
He loomed over you as he attempted to find the words to say
‘Hey’
‘Hey’
How are you?’
‘Good. You?’
‘I’m good.’
You nodded and looked over his shoulder in an attempt to find your friends
‘Y/N. Listen.’
Heeseung pleaded and he looked so desperate you couldn’t help but stare at him
‘I like you as my friend so please just keep being my friend.’
‘I am. I am, I just want space and I want time to be able to treat you like a pal and not the guy I like, Heeseung.’
‘That doesn’t explain why you’re ignoring the whole group.’
‘I’m not.’
‘You are! Sunoo misses you like fucking crazy and you are actually separated from Ryujin. That doesn’t feel normal.’
‘But I like being around the boys,’
‘SO LET THEM JOIN US. You don’t even have to look at me or speak to me, if you’re going to be my friend, please for the love of everything cheesy, we’re your friends too. Jay has even started sulking and you know he doesn’t hold grudges.’
You sighed
‘You’re right.’
‘I’m always right.’
‘I’ll let Sunghoon and Jake know then.’
‘Yes. Do that.’
So that lunch time, after attempting to persuade Jake who was more than happy to greet friends of yours and Sunghoon who was unhappy with Heeseung still
Sunghoon looked at you softly and then looked at Heeseung in a way that wasn’t the most friendly
‘Hey guys. This is Sunghoon and Jake.’
Jake waved and Sunghoon nodded, linking his fingers with yours
You turned towards him with a small smile
‘Uhhh- I was hoping we could all-join?’
They all couldn’t have been faster to nod or make room for you, welcoming you back with open arms and eager hearts.

pairing: hailey upton x reader
summary: you arrive at a police gala all dressed up and your girlfriend hailey can't help her jealously when she notices everyone staring at you.
word count: 0.7k
warning fluff and sexual content if you squint.
request note: i posted recently about how i really wanted to write dom!hailey upton and here's another anon request response!
note: thank you so much for this one, i hope this is okay but it's pure fluff!
Tumblr media
you walked into the open room. your black dress was simple, sleek, and had a slit on one of your thighs. the heels matched your dress and your hair was straightened down your back.
kim had helped you with your eyeliner earlier, a sleek wing on both eyes. you had on some mascara that complimented your eyelashes and you finished up the look with red lipstick.
now hailey wasn't biased because you were her girlfriend, but she definitely wasn't the only one looking at you.
"uh oh." adam chuckled. jay hit his arm to shut up and kim smirked, amused by the whole interaction.
the two of you had gotten ready together after work, you were closer to her than hailey was. hailey knew you wanted a little bit of girl time and opted out of the quick girl evening.
the brunette took a separate car since you'd be going home in different directions and beat you by a few seconds due to traffic. she held a champagne of glass for you, while drinking her own.
you didn't notice what was going on, just admiring how hailey looked and walked up to her with a smile that reached your eyes. she couldn't believe how beautiful you were.
even if it was a long night at work and you put your hair in a messy bun, you made it look so effortlessly. you just happened to have natural beauty no matter what you looked like. "hey babe!" you greeted.
she glanced around once more and tensed at the few who were still looking. you saw immediately what was happening and put a reassuring hand around her back in comfort.
after a few moments, you let go, seeing her calming. hailey was usually the one holding you. predicting her next movement, she put her hand around your waist instead and leaned in, giving you a sweet kiss. "hey beautiful."
kim held out your glass and you grabbed it from her, taking a sip. "thank you." she nodded and turned to adam who was talking to her about getting together yet again.
"i bet fifty bucks tomorrow they walk in around the same time." jay smirked.
"you're totally on! i bet they walk in together." hailey giggled.
"i agree with hailey. they are oblivious when they're together." you smiled in glee.
jay rolled his eyes already knowing what'll happen. "if you guys win you get to split the bet cost!"
kevin walked up from behind, hearing the conversation and spoke up. "don't worry jay, if they win then i'll split it with you. but i think burgess will be to cautious to walk in with ruzek."
"hmm, that's true. guess we'll all see, won't we?" hailey replied.
you held your glass up to the three, as if to silently say game on and tipped it back, swallowing the rest.
you heard kevin questioning jay where voight went and he said something about talking to somebody from a different department but that was all you had heard.
hailey pulled you away to the bar and noticed yet again that people were looking at you. she rolled her eyes and ordered two drinks from the bartender. "what's wrong?" you questioned.
"everybody is looking at you. i don't blame them in the slightest but i mean, can't they see we're together?"
you leaned in, pushing a strand of curly hair behind her ear and whispered in her ear. "let's give them something to look at, hmm?"
she squeezed her thighs together, attracted to the rasp in your voice and nodded. you leaned in slowly, brushing your lips along hers and then she took control of the kiss.
hailey's hand went on your cheek and the other rested on your hip. her teeth clashed with yours, neither not willing to give up dominance yet but she squeezed your hip, catching you off guard.
you gasped into her mouth and she took the opportunity to slide her tongue in your mouth, furthering the kiss.
maybe it was a little much for a police gala but you didn't care. hailey tasted so good on your lips and when she pulled back, you licked them.
she fixed her hair and glanced down at your lips and groaned, wishing the two of you were alone. you looked around and a few turned their heads away. the two of you grinned and then looked towards the group of intelligence.
the group hadn't looked away though and adam put
one of his arms up in the air, cheering all silly-like. you giggled, turning to see hailey smiling and shaking her head.
you walked in the next morning, seeing adam and kim walk in side by side and looked at hailey, smirking. you could hear a sigh from across the room. jay.

A Little Sus Part 2 - Reccordshipping (Lou x Dareth) [Part 1]
Dareth was beyond relived when Lou told him he was going to run late, it meant he had enough time to clean his suit up form the last party he went to where he wound up in an ocean of dyed water. "Jesper next time I want to pick where we go for a fish party," He mumbled to himself, running the steamer over it and brushing out the salt. You would think that a fish party would be fishing with a bunch of people, which it is, but the party-portion is the real catch.
He shook it out before throwing it on over his tan polo, double checking his hair and foundation before waltzing out the door. A date with Lou Brookstone, not something he expected to be real, not in this age, but not something he was going to put him down for. It was Lou's idea after all, it was at least worth a shot. Besides, he would be able to tell him if it's not right anyway, right? "And if anything goes wrong, we're still friends... I hope." He wavered and stepped out into the city.
--
"Cole, We really should not be meddling with this- I have nothing to do with this-" Zane was being pulled by the arm.     "Oh yes you are, you were with me for the first look-out, now you're stuck in here with me." He continued to stomp, the two of them dresses up nice for the occasion. Cole had planned it out, they were going to take a seat at a table, overhear their conversation -that's where Zane comes in- and then confront them afterwards. It was going to be perfect.     The nindroid fixed his tie and collar, "This feels wrong to me."     "Zane, let me put this into perspective," He rolled the words around in his mouth, "Lets say, your dad started dating oh, I dunno, Jay's parents. Wouldn't you be a little concerned? Wouldn't you want to know if it was a joke or not?"      He furrowed his brows, "Yes, I would be very concerned, my father is dead and that would make for a very strange relationship."      "ugh, lets just go."
--
"It's just nerves, it's going to be just fine!" Lou reasoned with himself behind the wheel. Dareth was fine with him running late by 30 minutes, right? He said it was okay over the phone. Maybe he had to get some things too? It was hard to pick out flowers for him, not many flowers were naturally brown unless they were dying or dried up, so he opted for golds instead. Getting flowers for the guy wasn't weird, Lou wore flowers all of the time- though he didn't even ask of Dareth liked flowers.      This was starting out horribly.      He eyed Dareth across the parking lot, the two stepping out of their vehicles at just the same time both dressed in suits with different cuts. "Is my timing impeccable or what? How are you?" He laughed and hugged the performer, "Those for me?"      "Oh- yes yes, do you know how hard it is to find brown flowers?"     "Not unless they're dead," Dareth snorted, taking the flowers and promptly sticking a few in his inner suit pockets, letting the heads poke out.      Lou offered a hand and the two walked in-toe. New problem, who was going to get the door? They both reached for it at the same time.     "Oh, my bad."     "Hah, sorry."     "Go ahead!"     "No please, your hand was first."     "Are you sure?"     "This was your idea for a date Lou, you get to open the door for me. I'm the guest."     "Right-"
"What are they doing?" Cole whispered from the roof of a building.      Zane held his hands up over his eyes like binoculars, "They seem to be having trouble opening the door. It is an order of operations problem."      "Huh, I guess that never crossed my mind. If two guys go on a date, who opens the door?"      "Whoever reaches it first, or whoever is on the side farthest from the handle. When we enter, I will get the door for us.- They're going inside, looks like your father opened the door."
"Wow, fan-cy," Dareth gleamed, "Say, this isn't one of your regular spots to go, is it?"     "Oh no, of course not. There's a different place down town, but I figured it'd be good to go somewhere that has more lenient reservation times. I actually know the owner of this one, she used to be part of an octet."     "Good evening, are you on the list?" the man at the podium began looking into the book. "Yes, under Brookstone. I am sorry for being half an hour late, some things popped up that I had to attend to." He smiled nervously. The man nodded and checked of the name, taking two menus and guiding them to a table.     "Something came up, what was that?" Dareth asked, flipping open the pages.     "Why I had to get the flowers of course, and I had to deliver a few letters."     "... at.. 6pm? Is the post office even open at that time?" He glanced up.     Lou picked at the corner, "No, but that doesn't mean I can't drop them off into pick-up boxes."     "That's what a mailbox is for?"     "I only have the little slit in my door, I thought having a box would clash with my house. Besides! I like to talk to the postman when he delivers. it makes it much harder to know when he's delivering a package if he doesn't right the bell!"     Dareth blinked and thought about it. Made enough sense to him, though it still seemed counter intuitive.
"Zane this place needed reservations??" Cole hissed.     "Yes, which is what I just did electronically. You can thank me later." He pulled open the door.     The deskman looked up at the two, eyes going from the broad-shouldered man with a comically large mustache, to the taller one with black pulled-back hair. "Reservation?"     "Yes," Zane hesitated, not wanting to lie. "It is on your website?"     Cole caught a glimpse of one of the last names, "Thornberry."     "uhhh....." He looked down and then back up, "You don't.. look like a miss Thornberry..." Cole stiffened, "I’m her husband. This is. My other Husband?"     "She set this up." Zane swiftly added. He looked from one to the other before leaning in, "Or we can take our money elsewhere."     He closed the book and took up two menus, "this way."     "Where did you learn to do that?" Cole whispered as they walked through, spotting where his father and Dareth were.     "Pixal has done this many times before, and it is terrifyingly useful." He whispered back.
"There's a lot to choose from," Lou looked over the various dishes, "What are you getting?"      "Just appetizers for me, I figure that we'll be talking more than anything." He slapped his wallet, not breaking eye contact.      Lou looked up at him, "I'm hosting, I can pay for it you know."      "Well in that case I want lobster bisque." He joked, pulling open the menu once more.      "I said I can pay for it, not hand over an arm and a leg," He chuckled, "Though that does sound good."      "Nah, nowhere in the city is it good. You want really good lobster, you'll have to travel east, just south of Stiix. Best lobster I've ever had- cheap too," Dareth hummed, "Go further and you can get a really good goose roast."      "Oh? Since when have you been over on those parts of the continent?"      "Well I did travel a lot for a little bit after my fluke. Jesper and I went all over the place, but I came back to the city since it's so homely to me. Country life just isn't what's for me, y'know?"      Lou nodded, "Yeah, I worry about that for me sometimes. When I retire I mean. I don't know what I'll do with myself then, maybe I can keep preforming.. and hope I don't sprain anymore ankles or knees."
Cole leaned in intently, "Well?"      "Cole this is really silly. They are talking about life."      "What? Is it even a date if it's not romantic?"      "A date can be anything Cole, it's primary goal is to let two or more people get to know each other better. Like for instance, I can initiate one right now by telling you about my day."      Cole set down the menu, "Oh? And how is your day?"      "It is going well. Currently I think I look very silly, and would much rather look like myself, but I do like your mustache."      "Yeah? I like it too. I just hope it doesn't fall off this time."      Zane chuckled, "You are your father's son."      "And what is that supposed to mean?" He leaned in.      Zane leaned on the table, "You both like your mustaches."

Two Can Play This Game
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Reader (Chicago Med ED doctor)
Summary: Y/N and Jay have a very undefined relationship, which causes problems when Jay decides to meet with Ally, his ex, for drinks. Y/N’s not one to take things lightly, so when Jay dismisses her jealousy she decides to give him a taste of his own medicine...
Warnings: Loud yelling-at-each-other arguments, which can be triggering, so please watch out! Swearing + dubious medical content, as per usual lol
A/N: I just needed a break before I got started on Not A Stranger Part 4, so this happened! Enjoy! As per usual, please leave comments if you really liked it - they mean a lot!
Tumblr media
The sun is bearing down on you hard, and you feel a trickle of sweat go down the back of your neck.
“Need a drink?” It’s Ethan, tossing a cool bottle of water at you. Grinning, you catch it and quickly begin to empty it into your mouth.
Ethan’s frowning, looking up into the sky. “Some days, I just don’t get Chicago. It’s either freezing because it’s the polar vortex, or it’s boiling hot because - well. Whatever. I hate this.” Crushing the plastic bottle, you toss it into a nearby trashcan. “We’ve cleared everyone?” You ask, gesturing to the relatively less frantic movement of firefighters, cops, and doctors on the road. Ethan nods.
A gas explosion had gone off in an apartment, and it was bad enough that CFD paged ED doctors to come down and treat some patients on the scene. Natalie, Connor, Lanik and the student doctors opted to stay behind and hold down the fort, so you were dispatched out with Will and Ethan. For the last hour and a half, you’d been busy running triage and treating whatever burns, smoke inhalations, and other trauma injuries came your way. Luckily, the fire had been contained to just one floor, so there were only a few really awful burns. But of course, this is Chicago so there’s only so much luck going around.
The building was an old one, and that coupled with several structural defects meant that the south face of the building had partially collapsed. So in essence, for every burn victim CFD pulled out, there were about three penetrating or blunt traumas from falling concrete.
“Yeah, but I’d rather treat trauma from a falling object than burns any day,” Ethan comments and you raise your eyebrows. “See, if you’d told me that at the start I would’ve just taken all the burn vics and tossed the rest to you.” Ethan throws his hands up, as you start laughing. “Okay hold on, I didn’t say I wanted to take them all – ” “You guys good?” Cruz swings by, soot and sweat on his face. He takes off his helmet with a sigh, and his shoulders sag like he’s been carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. “Should be asking you that. Are you guys done with search and rescue?” You ask, kicking a nearby plastic chair towards him. Cruz thanks you and starts taking off his equipment. “Yeah, we’ve cleared building. CPD’s in there now.” You nod, your heart skipping a beat at the thought of the police - well specifically at the thought of one detective who you know is on scene…
Except you’re supposed to be mad at him now, so stop thinking about him!
“So they think this is arson? And that it’s related to some case Intelligence is working?” Ethan asks, and Cruz nods, “Seems that way, yeah.”
There’s a moment of silence, and your eyes scan the area, watching patrol officers lift up police tape for the last few victims being wheeled into ambulances. You get up, ready to check with Will if he’s ready to go back when Cruz kicks at your feet, a cheeky smile on his face.
“So what’s this I hear about you and the younger Halstead being on the outs?” His eyes light up, and you groan, swearing. Ethan laughs, and you shoot him a glare, to which he simply shrugs like as if he’s got nothing to do with this.
You turn back to Cruz, narrowing your eyes at him. “Who told you and what do you know?”
“All I know is that you and Jay were both at Molly’s last night and you didn’t even look at each other.” Cruz pouts, acting all sad. “What happened to my favourite detective-doctor duo, huh? Why the trouble in paradise?”
You roll your eyes. “We’re fine. We just…were hanging out with different groups of people last night.” Shrugging your shoulders, you lean against the nearby table of supplies, trying to look all nonchalant. Ethan raises his eyebrows, “So you’re definitely not pissed about the blonde chick Jay had drinks with 2 nights ago?”
“Okay, fuck you - ” You exclaim, unable to hide your rage at that memory. Which Ethan and Cruz find hilarious, apparently, because they’re throwing their heads back and laughing.
“You guys suck,” You punch Cruz in the arm as you walk away; the two men calling you back while still laughing. You flip your middle finger at them, which elicits an outraged “Hey!” Shaking your head, you chuckle as well.
The Med ED/Firehouse 51/Intelligence circle is a tight one and you love it - love having friends who are more or less in the same line of work, friends you can lean on, friends who don’t get pissed when you have to cancel on them last minute. But the flip side of that is the fact that nothing stays secret. Gossip is most the valuable currency in that social circle, so if Cruz and Ethan know, then it’s not a bad guess to think everyone knows.
“Dude, c’mon. You’re an adult. Just take the damn injection!” Severide’s voice catches your attention, and you turn. He’s standing at the back of an ambulance, with Will and Jay by his side (your heart, again, skips a beat, which only pisses you off because ugh, you’re so bad at being angry at him!). The three of them are crowded around a fairly attractive, topless blonde man sitting in the back of the ambulance, shaking his head vehemently. You start making your way towards them, listening in.
“Hell nah – I’m not letting you stab me with that shit – ” The guy’s eyes are wide, and he’s leaning back from Will.
“It’s just a tetanus shot,” Will explains, exasperated. He points to the guy’s side, where a bandaged piece of gauze has been stuck to his skin. “The rusty stairwell scratched you, so you need to get a tetanus shot.”
“I said, I’m not fucking doing needles!” Hot blond guy yells and Jay runs his hand down his face. “Okay dude seriously, I can’t question you about the fire unless you get treated first, so please just take the damn shot so we can all move on with our lives – ”
“What’s going on?” You interject, hands on your hips. All four men turn, and you’re very careful to not make eye contact with Jay. Will and Kelly both immediately shoot furtive glances at Jay once they see you, so obviously they also know that you and Jay are having an argument. Great!
I mean, it has to have been Jay’s fault, because you didn’t tell anyone…well except for Natalie…who might have told Maggie…who might have told April…who might have told Kelly - shit. Well, it doesn’t matter. The whole thing is only happening because of Jay. Technically the two of you weren’t really dating – it was just a couple of hookups, but then you also started hanging out a lot together, and it got to the point where everyone knew that the two of you were basically kinda sorta an item.
You liked that you guys never had to sit down and talk about what exactly the two of you were – all that meant was that you guys were strong and confident and that you didn’t need to have a discussion about where you stood!
Or at least that’s what it meant to you. Jay apparently thought it meant it was completely okay to go have drinks with an on and off ex from high school, who he’d admitted to you he’d hooked up with on multiple occasions in the past. When you (rightfully!) got pissed at him, he just frowned and said “What’s the problem? We’re not together.”
To which you responded very maturely.
So maturely!
In a very, very responsible way…
Okay, fine, maybe you screamed “FUCK YOU!” at the top of your lungs and left his apartment, slamming his front door loud enough to wake up all the neighbours.
You get that you’re maybe being a little over-dramatic, and maybe it is on you because you just assumed you didn’t have to have that conversation with Jay. But it hurt you immensely how he thought it was okay to go have drinks with an ex (an ex!) without thinking about you at all.
“Blake here tripped on his way down the fire escape and got scraped by a rusty stairwell, but he’s refusing his tetanus shot.” Will explains, snapping you out of your reverie.
You turn to the guy just in time to catch him giving you a very slow once over, smirking.
Okay…
“How come a big strong guy like you is scared of needles, hmm?” You tilt your head, putting on your best flirty voice. It’s just a thing that tends to work with unruly male patients, you’ve learned over the years.
And yeah, maybe it can be a side benefit that Jay’s going to be an audience to you flirting with someone else…serves him right!
“I’m uh, I’m not actually scared of needles. Just didn’t trust that guy – ” He nods towards Will, who throws his hands in the air, “ – to do a good job you know? Take a delicate hand for these things. Speaking of which…you look like you’re pretty good with your hands,” Blake licks his lips, flirting with you blatantly. You have to press your lips against each other to not burst out laughing.
“Dude…” Jay threatens in a deep, dark voice, but stops when you turn around and grab the tetanus shot pack out of Will’s hands. You step towards Blake, who’s looking up at you with lust in his eyes as he shifts for you. Wiping his shoulder down with an alcohol swab, you find a good spot.
“I’m pretty good with my hands too, by the way,” Blake supplies, winking and you nod. “I’ll bet,” You reply, as someone behind you scoffs. From the corner of your eye, you can see Kelly turn away, trying not to laugh.
You’re much closer to Blake than you really need to be, not that he minds – in fact you’re pretty sure he’s having a great time checking you out up close. He curses under his breath when you inject him, but quickly recovers. You rub on the jab site once done, and trash the used pack. “Good to go,” You shoot Blake a smile. “Oh, one more thing!”
You turn, looking at a very frowny, jaws tight, arms-crossed-over-his-chest Jay Halstead. “Let me borrow that,” You reach forward and take his notepad and pen from him, before scribbling down your number on the top most sheet. Ripping it off, you press it against Blake’s chest, winking. Blake’s hands come up to take the piece of paper, grinning, briefly brushing your fingers as you pull away. Jay’s jaw is on the floor when you return his notepad and pen to him, and you can see Will just shake his head at you, amusement all over his face.
“Alright, let’s go!” You say to Will, and the two of you plus Kelly leave Jay behind with Blake.
“Jay’s going to murder that guy, you know right?” Kelly asks, once you’re out out earshot from Jay. “Like, he’s going down for a homicide. You just got an innocent man killed.” You chuckle and Will lets out a low whistle.
“I’m not gonna say he didn’t have that coming, but damn that was harsh.” The older Halstead says, still laughing.
Shrugging your shoulders, you act innocent. “I don’t know what you guys are talking about – I was just making friends!”
Will and Kelly both look at each other before looking back at you.
“Oh, yeah, of course – ”
“Obviously, what else could that have been – ”
You punch them both in the shoulder at their faux-agreement, the three of you laughing. Ethan comes over, saying there’s an ambulance ready to take them back to Med. You and Will say your goodbyes to Kelly, and take your leave.
***
It’s almost midnight when you finally get home. Hip-checking your door close behind you, you start undoing your scarf and carelessly toss it onto your coffee table, before collapsing onto your couch. Your hand roams the crevices of your couch, finding the plastic remote and turning on your TV. Rubbing your eyes while yawning, your TV comes alive to the news of the day. As if on cue, the screen is filled with videos of the building from earlier this morning.
“…while the gas explosion was first assumed to be an accident, it was later proven by CPD Intelligence that it was started by Derrick Henderson, a 35 year-old construction worker from Englewood, who…”
There’s a knock on your door, three loud raps. You blink, confused, and there’s another three. Frowning, you sit up, and you hear: “Y/N, I know you’re in there, c’mon just…just let me in, please,” Jay’s voice is muffled from the other side of your front door, but you know it’s him. Groaning, you get up and make your way over, unlatching your door.
“What do you want.” You intone, seeing him standing there in your threshold. He grabs the door with his hand, like as if he’s afraid you’re gonna shut the door in his face.
“I think I owe you an apology,” Jay starts and you hum, agreeing. “And then I think you owe me an apology,” He finishes, and your mouth falls open.
“What the fuck did I do!” You yell, shoving against his chest. Unfortunately for you, he doesn’t even budge - which is kinda hot, actually, wait, dammit - focus!
Jay’s eyes go wide, like he can’t believe you’re claiming innocence. “Are you kiddi – that whole thing! With – with Blake, the fucking moron, who was basically stripping you with his eyes! That was so unnecessary – ”
“You literally went on a date with your ex and you’re telling ME what’s unnecessary?! You – ”
“SHUT THE FUCK UP!” Your neighbour from down the hall yells, and both you and Jay shut up. “NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS YOU FUCKING MORONS!”
Jay scoffs, and turns to step down your hallway to your neighbour’s apartment when you reach out, grab him by his tee and unceremoniously drag him into your apartment. Slamming the door behind you, you turn to give him a piece of your mind.
“You’re the asshole who told me that we weren’t really together so it didn’t matter if you went out with your ex-girlfriend! So why the fuck is it a problem if I give my number out, huh?!”
Jay throws his hands in the air. “I’m sorry, okay! I didn’t fucking – I wasn’t thinking when I did what I did and I can see know that it probably really hurt you, but I swear I didn’t mean to do it. I didn’t want to hurt you; I just fucked up. But you – you went out of your WAY to piss me off – ”
“ALL I DID WAS GIVE OUT MY NUMBER – ”
“IN FRONT OF ME! TO SOME OTHER GUY! WHEN I – ”
The two of you jump when there’s loud banging on your door. “I’M CALLING THE FUCKING POLICE ON YOU TWO!”
Jay wrenches your door open and you see your pissed off neighbour on the other side. “I’M HER BOYFRIEND AND I’M THE FUCKING POLICE, SO YOU’D JUST BE CALLING ME!” He slams the door shut and turns, running his hands over his face.
“Okay, okay, we gotta stop yelling. Anyway, my point is – what?” Jay asks, as you stand unmoving, mouth slightly open.
When you eventually find your voice, all you can say is - “You’re my boyfriend?”
“That’s what I wanted to tell you – ” Jay smiles, reaching for you but you just step back.
“That you just decided you’re my boyfriend? Because this relationship is an autocracy?” You glare at him, getting angry again. The nerve of this guy!
Not that your heart didn’t practically soar when he called himself your boyfriend, but…
“No, no, we’re very democratic, and we should talk about this more, once we’re done with all the yelling.” Jay announces, and then he smiles. “I’m just saying I love you.”
“See, no, this is exactly the kind of issue with you - you just make decisions and act like you’re right and you can do whatever you want and you can go out with your ex if you want and that’s all supposed to be fine but the moment I – as a joke – hand out my number to some guy to give you a taste of your medicine, I’m the one who crossed a line and – wait, what?” You cut yourself off, confused if you’re hearing things.
“There we go,” Jay laughs, a fond smile etched on his face, as you finally process what he said.
“Did you just…did you just say you love me?” You ask, your voice soft as you step up to him.
“Yeah,” Jay’s grinning now, right in front of you. “I’m sorry it took me a while to realise it, but…I love you.”
You just blink at him for a couple of seconds, eyes starting to tear up. And then you punch him in the chest as hard as you can.
“Ow! What the fuck?!” Jay asks, eyes wide as he frowns, wholly confused.
“You fucking – fuck!” You whisper angrily, not wanting to piss off your neighbour again. “You had to fucking go out on a date with your ex-girlfriend and piss me the fuck off and make me make you jealous before you realised that you love me?!”
“I’ve been hit in the head multiple times…?” Jay shrugs apologetically.
“You’re an idiot.” You say, before cupping the back of his neck with your hand and pulling him down to press your lips together.
You can feel Jay smile through the kiss, bringing his hands up to cradle your face as he deepens the kiss, parting your lips. You’ve kissed each other many times before, in many ways – good morning pecks, in-the-middle-of-sex makeouts, teasing neck kisses – but something about this kiss is entirely new. It’s just…warm, and loving, and delicate and beautiful and just – just perfect.
When you pull apart, the two of you rest your foreheads against each other, smiling like dumb idiots.
“Jay?”
“Yeah?”
“I love you too.”
