Ships: Billy Hargrove x Chrissy Cunningham and Heather Holloway x Jason Carver.

Warnings: Implied/referenced child abuse, lots of arguing and misunderstandings, very mild references to sexual content.

“No. Nope. I don’t believe that for one second.”

Gossip. That’s all it is. Heather and Chrissy laying on the former’s bed, legs up against the wall, long hair dangling over the opposite edge of the bed, exchanging silly gossip.

Never the mean kind, Chrissy won’t allow that, it’s mostly their respective crushes and fascinations from school they talk about.

Or specifically, lately how much Heather doesn’t like Chrissy’s taste in boys. Or anybody, for that matter. In her heart of hearts, she knows Heather is just protective.

Still, Chrissy tosses a little stuffed fuzzball of an animal at her friend for that comment, “Hetty! Rude!”

“Look I’m sorry, I just can’t believe that Hargrove has like, actual feelings. I don’t trust him.” Heather elaborates, through her laughter.

See, she’d say the same every time, they both know that. What matters is whether Chrissy is bold enough to go through with it. She never has been so far. It’s one thing to have a crush, but to have someone openly pining back, that’s something more rare.

An opportunity Chrissy wouldn’t like to lose just to please her best friend.

She’ll try to win her over, “One date won’t be bad.”

But Heather will make excuse after excuse, “Every girl says that before the worst night of her life.”

Chrissy rolls onto her front, sighing so heavily the weight of Heather’s mattress lifts up, like she’s turned to the most stressed little helium balloon and floated away. Maybe she did, off into her imagination, taking her common sense with her.

Maybe she’ll entertain Heather’s concerns, but only if they’re productive, “Well how did you know Jason was being genuine?”

Heather's boyfriend. Track and basketball star, high class social asshole. Chrissys has never been a fan, to be entirely honest. Her earliest memories of Jason Carver were of him shoving over smaller kids in their church group and treating every recess game as pro-level sports. She still doesn’t see what Heather finds so charming about him.

She hopes maybe he’d changed, assumes he’d have had to to win over a critical heart like the one guarded in Heather’s chest.

Oh but Heather gives no such benefit of the doubt to anybody else, “I /don’t/ know it. But /my/ boyfriend doesn’t run over innocent children in his free time.. or whatever the hell it is Billy Hargrove gets up to.”

Chrissy has to laugh at that, it's so absurd, “Oh- He does not! Billy’s /nice./”

“Prove it.” Heather challenges, popping a gum bubble between her teeth to assert her seriousness.

“Hetty.” Chrissy warns, uninterested in playing that game.

Her friend isn’t having it. Heather rolls her brown eyes with so much force she literally rolls over on the bed, sprawling out over top of Chrissy like a beloved golden retriever with no respect for sharing space. It’s always been comfortable with her, coexisting without regard to self consciousness and mothers opinions and Godly image. Probably why she lets Heather get away with being a little catty sometimes.

Like now, as she claims, “Oh come on. Make it a game, have some fun, but show me he’s genuine. Or else I’m kicking his ass.”

“Fine.” Chrissy wants to be stern, but she cracks a little smile, her real, bright one, “If I'm supposed to threaten to kick Jason’s butt, I don’t think I’d be able to.”

Heather hums in thought before presenting a solution, “I’ll do the ‘defending of our honor’ if you help me test Jay back.”

“Pinky promise you’ll be nicer to Billy once we get proof?”

“That’s /if/ we get proof, but you have my word.”

The deal is sealed. They lock pinky fingers, one soft pink nailed and one a flaming red shade. In the ten years they’d been friends since Heather joined their class in 1st grade, not a single pinky promise between them has been broken. It just isn’t done.

Admittedly, that’s a lot of pressure. Talking about cute boys doesn’t feel as fun anymore.

Chrissy’s fluttery feelings start to set in, fidgeting with her hands to hope to drive them off. If she had her bracelets on, she’d shake them and enjoy the way they ring from the hard plastics and metals banging together, but it’s late, she’s in her pjs without jewelry. She picks her nails instead.

Redirecting, Heather hands her a stuffed Winnie the Pooh, and asks a question she knows will catch her off guard, “Soooo. What are you gonna do?”

“Hetty, I haven’t had time to think!” Chrissy complains, squishing poor Pooh between her hands, choosing to abuse the stuffed toy with her anxiety instead of her own skin.

“Oh come on. What do boys care about? Cars, sex, and sports. Pick one and he’ll show his true colors.” Heather says it likes it’s all just so easy, and she already knows it all.

Chrissy isn’t as sure. She considers her options,

“Um, sports sounds the least dangerous.. maybe?”

“Until he tackles your little ass.” Heather points out.

There’s a moment where they both sort of stop moving. They both know what Heather is about to do, but Chrissy's defenses are useless to stop it. She scrunches her body up as tiny as can be, but Heather has pounced, poking her sides gently where she knows her friend is ticklish.

Chrissy used to get all self conscious when Heather would do things like that. Not just touching her skin, so close to where she feels her strongest insecurities, but even jokes, little digs that had nothing to do with Chrissy’s appearance would get her down.

They have Billy to thank for the change. Dating or not, William Hargrove isn’t one to hide his affections. Everyone knows he’s had a thing for Chrissy for a while. It’s deciphering whether he’s chasing tail, or chasing the sweet girl he’d shown enough interest in to replenish her view of herself, hung around and flirted and laughed with so freely it healed a part of her broken heart.

She thinks maybe repaying him a little would increase the chances of getting the ball rolling, and getting Heather’s trust. “What if I cheer special for him during one of his games?”

“Uh, no!” Heather shakes her head, rolled curls bouncing in their pillow curlers back and forth, ”That just makes /you/ public about it. And he can spin that if he’s being an ass for real.”

“But I don’t think-“ Chrissy starts to argue, brow knotted.

Heather holds one of her hands, showing she is doing this because she cares, even if she’s being a little harsh, “Honey, I know I’m a cynical bitch, but I don’t want to see you hurt. Save yourself the embarrassment.”

“I don’t- Heather, it’s not embarrassing to be in love!”

A gasp, slow realization dawning. “You’re right. Oh my god, Chrissy you’re so right!!”

Heather kicks her legs with glee, fuzzy slippers going flying. Right out of a movie, she squeals with delight, infecting Chrissy too with her sudden joy.

Chrissy giggles, going along with it, “I am?”

“Uh, yes! It’s perfect!” Heather scoots closer until they’re shoulder to shoulder, looking up at the ceiling together. She talks with her hands, like she’s painting the picture for her. “Don’t /cheer/ his name. /Wear/ it.”

Only, Chrissy doesn’t think she gets it, “...How?”

“His varsity jacket! If a boy gives you his varsity jacket, it’s serious business. They protect those damn things like a firstborn daughter. If you can get Billy to give you his jacket, you might as well be hitched!” Heather explains, a ball of enthusiasm.

Chrissy knows her longing heart starts racing, probably obvious to Heather too this close together, “You actually think that would work?”

Heather flips up so she’s sitting, burning some of her energy in her dramatic motions, “Duh! You show up to a game repping his varsity, baby, that deal is sealed. I’m talking a proposal at the end-zone. A wedding between quarters. I’m talkin’ baby-making under the bleachers-“

Chrissy, face as hot pink as her pj tank top, interrupts all that, “Okay! Okay. That’s… I get it.”

“Do I make you blush, fair lady?” Heather drawls, in an impression of a boy, eyebrow arched, chest puffed out, lips curled, her voiced dropped ridiculously deep-

Chrissy covers her face, trying desperately not to laugh at the ridiculous attempt, “Heatherrr!!”

Heather clutches her chest like she’s wounded, taking on a sort of accent almost from how badly she’s doing her impression, “Ah! My apologies, maiden. How ungentlemanly of me.”

“Nobody talks like that! /Billy/ doesn’t talk like that!!” Chrissy argues, though she giggles at the unseriousness of it all. So it took a while, but Heather always does know how to make her feel better.

They drop the boy talk for a while, choosing to sneak downstairs and grab some snacks at two in the morning once Heather’s parents were definitely asleep, coming back up with a strange homemade trail mix. Dark chocolate chips, raisins, pretzels, almonds and strawberries. Certainly nothing outside of Chrissy’s comfort zone, careful not to push the limits of her recovery, though it’ll probably give them both a stomachache in a few hours regardless.

Leaned against some bean bag chairs right under the open window, enjoying the birdsong and cricket chirps, they share their homemade creation, and better, more smiles and lighthearted stories. Like they used to, before highschool drama and all.

Nearing 4, Heather turns to her, uncharacteristically dead serious, and declares, “I hope he makes you this happy.”

The realness inspires Chrissy to do the prying now, switching roles, hoping her friend will open up to her in kind, “Does Jason make you happy?”

“/Jason/ does. Our parents practically arranging for us to be married from the time we were newborns, hm not so much.” Heather sighs, drawing her knees in. She doesn’t quite shut down, it’s more for comfort, self assurance, which Chrissy understands. She gives her space to collect her thoughts.

“He’s my guy best friend. And I love him. In more than the best friend way. It’d be stupid not to end up together. But god there’s so much pressure!”

“I think you should do the jacket thing too.” Chrissy offers carefully, “I’m doing it to prove /my/ date isn’t a one-hit creep. You can do it just to remind yourself why you love your boy. And that he loves you. ‘Cause I know he does, Heather. But I know you’re afraid he doesn’t.”

Heather has tears in her eyes and a sad smile when she looks at Chrissy, “What is with you quiet girls and secretly being psychics?”

Oh how Chrissy wished she truly were a psychic.

At the beginning, she wasn’t nervous at all. Her and Heather bullshitted all the time, it wasn’t anything serious. But they’re all four on a date, wandering downtown around the various second hand stores, a typical stop for one couple, and the complete opposite for the others.

Seemed as good a time as any to go through with their silly plan, it wasn’t like it would hurt anything. Except she’d tried all kinds of things to get Billy to give her his jacket, and so far, none of them worked even a little! Not browsing through a selection of jackets at the stores, not shivering dramatically, not clinging to his side either.

Chrissy felt a chip in her little heart every time, feeling like maybe Heather was right. All over a jacket. She’d have her heart broken for a little bit of wool and leather.

With her boyfriend's name on it. Her boyfriend who actually holds her hand, and tells her she’s pretty, and doesn’t creep his hands under his skirt constantly.

She doesn’t know if she could get over losing that.

Her gait down the strip is admittedly less spirited, lingering behind Heather and Jay, but Billy never leaves her behind. He engages her in conversation too, hair blowing all over the place around his face, “How the fuck do you go outside in this shit?”

Chrissy looks at him, wearing an amused little smile, “Like, ever?”

“Yeah /ever/, Princess.” Billy sarcastically, but lightheartedly bumps her shoulder lightly with his arm, “Jesus, I should take you to California. Gonna miss winters without tiny fucking knives falling from the sky.”

Heather doesn’t lose track of that comment for a minute. Excited for Chrissy, she tries to plant the seed for their plan,

“What’s the matter, Billy? You too cold?”

“Hell no. But I’m not a chick the size of a baby deer.” Billy remarks, taking the bait perfectly well, rubbing Chrissy’s arms and feeling how cold she is, “Shit, you’re fucking frozen, Chris. Here.”

And without even thinking he peels off his varsity jacket and starts to hand it over.

Used to the cold, and despite her excitement wanting to make sure Billy doesn’t get uncomfortable, Chrissy protests, “No, no, no. Keep it. I can’t let your California sunshine freeze over.”

Billy disregards that, slinging it over her shoulders anyways, “Yeah, well I’m not letting all the fuckin’ little pixies that fly around your head freeze to death either.”

Jason scoffs at him, turning around to walk backwards with the group, teasing, “Dude, what does that even mean?”

Without even looking Heather flicks his ear, getting his attention back, “Just because you don’t understand romance doesn’t mean nobody can.”

He looks at her like a kicked puppy, but Jason is nothing if not stubborn, “Pixies? Sunshine? What happened to- beautiful and charming and butterflies in the stomach?”

“I don’t know, Jason. Maybe you should fall in love again and find out.”

“Who would I fall in love with? Nobody can beat you, Holloway.”

Heather rolls her eyes, flicking her hair like an agitated horse would it’s tail, “Ah, see you almost got a couple points there. Almost. You’re in the negatives though for using my last name.”

He tries to recover it suavely, “I could call you Carver instead?”

But that isn’t Heather's way. She counters intensely, “No. I’m not being a child bride, thank you very much. Besides, who says I’m taking your name? Maybe I could call you Holloway.”

“The.. I- Okay.” Jason just sputters, turning pink up to his ears.

Behind them, still lingering a good ways back, Chrissy hums, warm and cozy in her boyfriend’s jacket, “What are they even arguing about?”

Billy laughs about that, shrugs his shoulders, “Hell if I know. They lost me a long time ago.”

“It’s funny. Heather didn’t think you were good for me, but she fights with Jason all the time.” Chrissy informs him.

Billy stops dead in his tracks. Gently uses his hold on Chrissy's hand to spin her around to face him as he fell behind,

“Hold on. Take a step back. Heather thinks /what/ about me?”

Chrissy’s nerves spike so quickly she gets a little dizzy, “Please don't take it personally. I want my two favorite people to like each other. Please.”

Her beau steadies her, instead of freaking out, “No problem. I just find it.. fuckin’ weird.”

“It’s because of the way you drive. And smoke. And act. She thinks it’s bad for me.” Chrissy blurts, knowing it’s unkind but needing him to believe that she had no part in it.

He doesn’t seem too phased by having Heather’s disapproval, apparently learning faster than most people do, “Big fucking deal. At least you know I love you, right?”

“Mhm.” Chrissy nods her assurance, standing on her tiptoes to kiss Billy’s cheek and seal the promise.

“Right. Tell her she’s the one making Jason cry his damn eyes out the second he gets tipsy on a sip of anything stronger than a fuckin’ soda pop. I’m tellin’ you, Holloway has ripped out his heart and shoved it up his own pansy ass.” Billy sounds bitter, but not overly mean.

It’s something he’s thought about before. Good to know the gossip street goes both ways.

It’s why Chrissy doesn’t feel too bad telling Billy now, “She doesn’t mean to. I think she’s scared.”

“Sacred of Carver?…. He hurt her?” His voice drops, as angry and mean as Heather warned her about.

They don’t talk much about serious things, serious isn’t their kind of fun, but Chrissy knows about Billy’s life at home. About the type of man Billy could’ve been destined to be.

She rushes to make sure he doesn’t turn on his own friend for thinking Jason was the same way, “Oh no! No, not at all. Never. It’s her mom and her daddy. They sort of forced her to date Jason. She wasn’t ready. I think she’s ready now and doesn’t want to admit it. ‘Cause that would be like taking their orders.”

“Fuckin’ parents.” Billy eventually grumbles, not knowing what else to say.

It seems to be a common theme in their group. A bonding experience for all four of them, whether or not they’re open about it.

Chrissy doesn’t really feel like talking about that stuff anymore, sort of just mumbling, “Yeah.”

Because Billy is perfect, and none of the things Heather says at all, and the actual bullies in their lives makes her want to just hide. Billy notices the drop in her mood, and silently slings an arm around her waist, pulling her into his side as they walk. Keeping her close. Safe.

Maybe someday things will work out beyond Hawkins. They have to. Winning the jacket was a silly, small victory, but it was a step.

Now Chrissy just wants, more than anything, her friends to be happy.

She holds onto Billy’s hand a little tighter.

The next time Heather and Jason get together, it’s for a study date at the end of that week. With Heather being a year above, the only class they have in common is the Biology two class Heather failed last year. There’s coloring sheets of bones and cells to be completed, so it’s not like they need each other’s help, but sitting on Heather’s bed coloring with colored pencils didn’t seem like a bad deal either way.

At some point, surrounded by all the color, Heather realizes something,

“Honey. We’re going shopping this weekend.”

Jason barely looks up from his work, focused on being neat close to the lines, “For?”

“Clothes. You’ve worn three white polos this week. I’m bringing some color into your life.” Heather pokes him with the flat end of the white pencil for emphasis.

Jason blinks, caught off his guard, “I wear green sometimes.”

“School colors don’t count. Yellow either.”

“I think I have, maybe, /one/ blue shirt.”

Heather digs in the pile for a turquoise-ish pencil, “Blue! Blue’s.. good! That’s definitely on God’s rainbow. Maybe a nice pair of blue jeans too, for once-“

That’s where Jason cuts it off. Because that’s where Heather went from playfully sharp to flat-out insulting, “Heather, please.”

She stays on the defensive, “I’m just saying. There’s nothing wrong with branching out from your choir boy uniform. That’s all.”

Sometimes it’s like she thinks if she pokes a bruise enough, it’ll make her seem like she’s strong enough to cause them. Like she’s all in charge and nothing can stop her.

Jason doesn’t want to stop her, he just wants her basic respect, “So what do you suggest?”

Not even sarcastic, just genuinely enthusiastic to share, Heather starts, “Pastels! Your hair is way too strawberry to be a dark dresser. Unless you go with emeralds, no more tacky green. Ooh, or even if you grow it out some! You know, actually-“

Jason runs his fingers over his neatly parted hair, protecting it, not hiding the concerned squeak to his voice, “No thank you, I happen to like my hair short.”

“Again, baby. Boring.” Heather just rolls her eyes, once again. Sometimes it’s like that’s all she knows how to do.

It stings.

“Look, if nothing I do is ever going to be good enough-“

Heather doesn't entertain that in the least. She slaps her hand over his homework page, making him look at her, “It’s not /you/. You know that it’s not you.”

No, he didn’t know that. Jason looks at her, confused, “What?”

“Just because you dress yourself, and you drive your stupid little station wagon around parading your image, doesn’t mean there’s not that voice in the back of your head. Maybe… maybe a tight fist too. Telling you what to do. You’re afraid.” Heather talks with her hands, just enough that Jason can see through it.

That she’s being showy to hide something.

Doesn’t mean he’s not been rendered self conscious and bare-souled all the same. He doesn’t like that, even after months with Heather not feeling safe showing her all his tender parts like that, “I don’t want to hear this from you.”

“Oh, so a girl can’t have opinions, huh? I should just spread my legs now and let something else do all the talking?” Heather heats the argument.

Jason just lets his head fall back, frustrated, “I don’t- You /know/ I don’t want that.”

“Oh please do enlighten me then, your graciousness.” Heather forces what Jason is thinking out of him.

So he lets it go, without regard to her feelings, even though he hadn’t wanted to, “Look, I’m not stupid. I know your parents are a problem, Heather. Everyone that’s read the paper knows Tom Holloway isn’t a kind man. You try to hide it, but you can’t keep it from me. And you can’t- just take it all out on me!”

“I wasn’t-“ Heather tries to backpedal.

He still doesn’t let her, “You were! You always have! Nobody has the key to the lock on your heart, but I’ve been trying anyways. And you just shut. me. down!”

“Jason…”

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry we didn’t meet for real until high school. I’m sorry I can’t save you because I’ve got my own.. shit to deal with. But, and forgive me for using His name in vain, Jesus fucking Christ Heather!”

“Jason..” Heather repeats, clearly more misty eyed than before, and opens her arms. A hug is letting him in physically, letting him get close even when the words aren’t easy.

Mostly, she hadn’t realized Jason could read her as easily as she could read him.

He takes the vulnerability to mean it’s safe to say, “I love you.”

“I know.” Is Heather’s response. It’s not easy to say it back, not when she chokes on it every time she tries to say it to her ‘problems,’ let alone a highschool boyfriend she was never supposed to fall for, not in her own heart.

It’s enough. Jason keeps holding her, lips against her shoulder, “I’m sorry.”

Heather repeats herself, “I know.”

Nothing else felt right to say. Because she /was/ sorry too, but saying it second would feel ingenuine. At least, she’d read it that way.

She closes her eyes and feels exhausted. It’s not supposed to be this hard. Their school years are drawing to a close, and yet she can’t even admit her own parents treat her like shit.

Maybe a silent tear drop or two drips off the end of her nose behind Jason’s back. If he noticed, he didn’t say a word.

After a while, Heather needs to do something, sitting and thinking and regretting not doing anything to help, “Can we call Chrissy and Billy and go get some ice cream or something?”

“Sure. I think I owe that to you for keeping myself so.. alone.” Jason admits, bashful but genuine.

And isn’t that just the thing. Heather gives him a tiny smile back, “Ditto, baby.”

Ice cream ran into the evening, all of them itching for an excuse to stay out. Chrissy was the last to finish her bowl of two raspberry scoops with sprinkles, half of it melted into sludge by the last spoonful, and even that’s not a distraction enough.

It’s early spring, which means, as the group informed Billy, that the Hawkins drive-in theater was opening back up. Nobody even needed to discuss it to know that’s what they wanted to do. There were a variety of chick-flicks and even more horror sequels in the box office, which meant the two week delay at the drive-in would make for some good choices at least. Most Hawkins residents would take their trucks out there, not some prissy little station wagon, but it would do.

At least, it should, but Billy started getting impatient with cruising along under the speed limit out to the wooded hill where the drive-in is, “Can’t this piece of shit go faster?”

Heather turned around slightly to face and scold him, “Well, we coulda brought yours if you hadn’t decided to buy the extra tiny, no room for fun model.”

Billy just snorted humorlessly, “We could fit if there was any actual fun going on. Leaving room for the Lord or whatever is what fucks it up.”

For that comment, knowing their company, Chrissy pushed Billy’s arm gently. Still, she didn’t seem to disagree too harshly, since she smiled through when he kissed her next.

Heather seemed irritated, though that tends to be her default honestly, as she huffed, “Not everyone’s a sleaze like you, Hargrove. Get used to it.”

Billy hadn’t even justified it with a response, just waved her off and used the same arm to swing it over the seat behind Chrissy. She was wearing his jacket again, hadn’t taken it off all week, curled into his side and wearing his name. In that bubbly way she does, she was also wiggling her hands about, not nervous, but happy.

Content.

Heather and Jason still had a ways to go to reach contentment.

The pair stay in the car for the movie, their counterparts in a blanket on the grass instead. Cali boy is out there freezing his ass off, but he’d said anything would be better than being trapped with relationship drama.

Heather and Jason try to ignore him.

They fail.

Jason turns to her not even a full twenty minutes after that comment starts working it’s way under his skin, “Heather?”

“Hm?” She hums to show she’s listening, but doesn’t look his way.

That’s not enough for what needs to be said, so he repeats, “Heather.”

“Yeah, that’s me. You need something?”

“I wanted- I just…. I’m sorry.”

Her pretty features screw up in confusion, “For what?”

“For not being good enough.” Jason informs, like it was the most clear thing, “You’d be happier with a guy like Billy. Maybe you could call up Steve-“

“No, fuck you if you think I could ever leave you.” She spits.

And then she grabs Jason by the collar of his polo and kisses him.

It’s nothing chaste, nothing at all like their usual peck of the lips. This is roaming tongues and hands.

Heather reigns herself in when she feels Jason’s hands, holding her hips up under the back of her shirt, shaking.

“I’m not gonna make you do anything. Sex isn’t my endgame.”

He sort of freezes, like it hadn’t occurred to him that Heather wouldn’t mind helping him in his devotion to modesty, “So what is?”

“An apartment. Maybe get a cat. I want to share a space with you long before we do marriage shit.” Heather explains lightly, smile on her face.

Jason relaxes his shoulders, “Make it a dog and we’ll see. Dogs are better.”

“Oh, ha-ha. Make it one of each and I’ll forgive you for that comment.”

Heather kisses him again, without any heat or intensity this time, just gentle, soft affection. She even lets him touch her hair, despite usually slapping his hands away for that. It helps that she’d brushed it out to be restyled before bed tonight, but still, she would have let him even if her curls were laying perfect.

When they pull away, Heather lays her head on Jason’s shoulder. Instead of watching Cat’s Eye on the screen, her gaze falls to their friends huddled up outside, and she muses, “How much you wanna bet Chrissy and Billy run away into the sunset?”

“I hope they do. Hawkins is Hell on earth.” Jason asserts, clearly serious because he usually wouldn’t even mention a place like that.

Heather sighs slightly, “Literally. The kidnappings, the murders. I can’t take much more of it.”

Confident, Jason says, “I’m sure they’d make room for us then. If we wanted to go with them.”

That has Heather sitting up straighter, surprised, “You would live in California?”

Sunny skies, living free- it didn’t seem very much his pace. The order and the mundanity of Midwestern life seemed better for Jason.

He just shrugs for now, “Who knows? We’ll see when we get there.”

“And you’re okay with that?” Heather wonders aloud, as she knows it, finding that Jason prefers to have his entire life planned out.

He only sounds a little tense as he tries to sound brave and strong, “Getting there.”

If Heather could be more open to discussion when that made her uncomfortable, and Jason less complicit to begin with, the pair would probably be on the right path again.

She lays her head on him again, and this time, Jason takes his arm out of one sleeve of his varsity jacket, slinging it around her like a blanket. Her heart absolutely soars. The promise to Chrissy was fulfilled, she and her honey were working out just fine now, after she’d gotten Billy’s jacket.

That’s gotta be a sign that things will work out for Heather too.

Shoutout to you for the way you treat Alex and George’s relationship when you talk about George in context of gewis. So many people in cases like this with less popular ships turn vitriolic towards anyone who they think could pose a threat to their ship and just… don’t. Wow, thank you!

I have to say this message surprised me a bit because it’s something I’ve really had to work on, to the point I used to get some very angry anons about the way I generally ignored or forgot about Alex. Basically the opposite of this one hahaha! but I’ve also started to warm more to Alex this year than I did last year, though I still wouldn’t call myself a real fan, it’s nice when he does well.

I have… a complicated relationship with Alex as a driver and person. On one hand, he’s George’s best friend, I couldn’t change that even if I wanted to, and it’s a truly sibling like relationship I suspect George needed given how much older his actual siblings were. They support each other and that’s a thing they both need.

On the other, I’ve been watching since 2020, and Alex WAS a Red Bull driver, and he spent the entire first year of when I was watching the sport, getting into incidents with my favourite driver while being generally being very… accusatory. His role in RB during 2021 didn’t help either, and it just generally left me very mistrustful of the guy, probably unfairly, but with 20 drivers to focus on you don’t tend to get past first impressions unless you really stick about.

When he moved to Williams it was all under the fan fair of Horner crying that Toto didn’t approve of the move because he thought Alex was going to spy for them, and at the time it was hard not to sit there and go “well… are you?” Because post AD Redbull had more than proven they were willing to do anything to win, even if it was George’s influence that got Alex the Williams seat. It now truly delights me to see how that has in fact backfired on Christian as he lost a genuinely talented young driver to another team who will better respect his skill if he’s willing to be patient, though you won’t catch me calling for Alex to Merc…ever, or at least, any time soon.

I also struggled with the way he did talk about George a lot! It’s banter between brothers but it often felt like at the time the only way I saw Alex referring to their relationship was to poke or complain about George- especially showing off his body. Every single post George made showing even a little skin- the comments would be full of people waiting for Alex to show up and say something mean, and slowly the content from George dropped off, a coincidence probably given the ramp up with his duties at Merc, but it was hard not to link those things y’know, especially with my OWN, not Alex’s problem, views on body image.

So yeah, it was a tough grind, NONE of it helped by the prevalence of Galex as a popular ship and the tendency of popular ships to get very… expectant, of you to like them. I had the exact same issue with Sewis, though I will always adore Sebastian, because for a while it really did feel like it was being shoved in my face every which way and I couldn’t escape them, and no one enjoys having to wade through things they don’t like. Lots of posts with a general vibe of “what do you MEAN you like gewis when galex exists and clearly has more evidence” that just didn’t sit right for what I felt or what I was seeing. There was also the fic that will not be named that gave me a slightly… traumatic response to Galex and Sewis in relation to Gewis, and I all but stopped mentioning Alex at all if I could avoid it. Which as mentioned at the start… some anons sure took issue with!

I spose what changed my relationship with Alex was reframing his relationship to George (and by proxy redbull), when then things he started saying became less about George’s body and more about what a pain in the ass best friend he was. That’s a relationship I understand, the best friend who you love beyond all belief, would defend from wolves, would kill for, but if you had to date you’d kill each other in a couple days. A psuedo sibling bond I have with a lot of my own friends, people I would say I love you too knowing I have 0 intention on dating them.

Then it became easier to see all the ship stuff because I could go, cool I get it, but to me that’s his brother, that’s the guy who watches George pine and makes faux gagging noises, but would also go behind George’s back to tell Lewis how George felt if he thought it would make George happy. That’s the guy who George complains to when he’s struggling with balancing his feelings with his job as a teammate, and who hugs him when he’s feeling lost.

I have to credit Niamh for saying it one of her fics- but Alex is George’s Valtteri. The guy who has his back even when they’re fighting, and who’s bond goes a little deeper than skin, different to romance but no less strong.

So yeah, I will still always probably grit my teeth when it comes to getting galex shoved in my face, (no I haven’t forgotten synths poll, so many of you were v annoying to me ((this is a JOKE)), I’ve certainly started to completely detach that from Alex as a driver, and short of a nuclear melt down, I hope that relationship just slowly improves. Not that any of that matters to him of course. But this is the blog where I talk about myself.

Sorry for the ramble! That was useful to get off my chest I think hahah, cheers for the offload, now I can move on from it.

B5 s03e07 Exogenesis table of contents • previous episode

I try to pay attention to ships' names because they can give hints to the nature of a character or a thematic element, but today's is pretty oblique. The shuttle Dyson. Is it for Dyson physics? The interactions of quantum elements with physical matter from a quick wikipedia romp. Or is it another dyson that I don't know the reference for? Fun theorizing.

This newly minted Lieutenant seems plot-relevant!

Marcus the Ranger is hanging out on B5, it seems. I wonder if it's one of those times they talk about someone to remind the audience they exist, but they don't show up in the episode.

Yikes! The Dyson people are doing weird alien bugs melding into humans shit. Dr Franklin's probably gonna do more coke-fueled medical work.

Corwin the new Lieutenant is going to get Susan Ivanova's best subtle grilling as to his allegiances. Can't wait. But till then, some Marcus harassing a sleeping vendor by quoting the Scottish play to him.

And then a meeting with another Ranger who gives him the funniest information report imaginable. Not so much sharing information as making sly allusions to what may be. Funny and dramatic. It is interesting seeing Marcus work. He's like a local liaison, coordinator, recruiter, and information gathered all at once. I guess you have to wear a lot of different hats when you're in a small start-up with limited staff and a ever-widening scope.

I love the sheer medical garb and ppe, and also like the new mesh arm and shoulder layer Dr Franklin is modeling. Also like the 3d imager! The alien bug is now wrapped around the dead guy's spinal column and is imaged like criss-crossing threads. I enjoy this medical mystery for Dr Franklin. He could use some enrichment, and if there aren't mass causalities it might be almost relaxing for him.

Looks like Marcus's absent colleague/contact has fallen in with a new crowd. A crowd of people all infected with this new-to-Stephen parasite? What would a parasite's agenda even be? And the vendor who wasn't feeling well is missing as well.

Listen new Lieutenant. Listen to me closely. Susan Ivanova is not hitting on you right now. She is the second in command of Babylon 5. Obviously she wants to informally assess a new Lieutenant under her command!

Funny that Garibaldi was enthused about the idea of hanging with Marcus and inviting him to things, but now that Marcus himself is asking him to do something, he doesn't wanna hang. And I actually laughed at Marcus's clever wordplay. He didn't lie at all, but strongly suggested that Garibaldi cares a lot about the issue and is asking Dr Franklin to help Marcus. He must have studied at the same Aes Sedai school as Delenn!

Shenanigans are afoot at the old vendor's quarters! His shirt is all jacked up and his back is pulsing! I don't like that! Or all the parasite-distributers with guns.

Stephen and Marcus are asking the same questions I am. What are the parasites' motives? What are their aims? What are their actual effects on the humans?

Dr Franklin thinks the parasite takes control of their neural system. I wonder if they are trying to transport themselves somewhere, or survive somehow. Garibaldi's point about why they would be targeting people from Down Below is a good one.

Marcus is sassy! I like him. He's very roguish. He and Dr Franklin will be fine. I hope they enjoy their field trip together!

I hope Susan is fucking with this guy right now. Just tormenting him over the roses because he panicked and lied and said he found them lying on her doorstep.

An unsettling conversation with the person who says he "was once Duncan, but is now Vindrizi." And he says they are just trying to survive. dun dun! This still has the potential to be a mostly enriching field trip for Dr Franklin. And it's a great further introduction to Marcus. I like him tremendously.

Susan's testing the insubordinate waters is kinda sorta subtle. But she does get the necessary information. He would report another officer whom he say speaking or acting against Earthdome. They will have to work around him!

Oooooh, gossiping about Susan Ivanova! Franklin likes her. Marcus is concerned that she seems more distant now than when he first came on board.

Marcus: "I sense in her a key as yet unturned." Dr Franklin: "What does that mean?" Marcus: "I don't know, but I think it will be fascinating to find out."

dude is just saying allegorical things and then admitting he doesn't even know why he thinks that. Lol. But somehow it's charming?? What a little smartass (affectionate). Dr Franklin thinks so, too. And I love that they're failing the reverse bechdel test (I jest, I jest).

Stephen is right that Marcus is not Ivanova's type. We all her know her type is blond and telepathic with a tortured backstory.

This has been a very fun plot. Stephen has two patients in one, and Marcus just took out two guards in one plot! And got Stephen's Link and triggered a security protocol! Finally, some backup is on the way. There's just enough time for Marcus and Stephen to discover the aliens' tragic backstory and suddenly be required to negotiate for their safe passage to the recently-arrived security team. But they do have wrap up their little prison break first!

Aha! Information sharing! The person who was once Duncan says that all the humans there volunteered, and that they will all have a better life this way.

Aww, and they have a hell of a backstory! Less tragic, and more epic. Living histories. Less parasites, and more a holy order of record-keepers.

This is a wonderful little story. Very epic. Another of those cool details of worldbuilding. Also it's fucking hilarious how Stephen Franklin is like "I will only allow this if I get to medically oversee it every step of the way."

Oh, and here does come the tragedy. Duncan's…symbiote? left him so Duncan could convince Marcus and Stephen they were telling the truth, but the separation caused damage and he wouldn't be able to rejoin without permanent damage. But at least he feels inspired to go really live and see some amazing things with the rest of his life. And I think he's wise to say that we should all wake up and decide to be special.

Lol, Susan wasn't fucking with the Lieutenant Corwin about the roses. Inadvertently, that guy has played a hell of a prank on both her and Marcus! Hah!

Ivanova, throwing the roses on the bar: "Keep em!" Marcus, beaming and picking them up: "Thanks! I will!"

Really laughed hard at that one.

Alright, I'm starting to see where some of you acquired your crushes on Marcus! He's cute and charming! And very nonthreatening. I wouldn't mind being buds with him. He seems genuinely really an entertaining person to hang out with.

This was overall an interesting and fun episode. I enjoyed theorizing about it. I can't discern a connection between the name of the shuttle the symbiote record keepers arrived in and any plot. If you have thoughts on that let me know! It also isn't often you see symbiotic relationships with bug-like critters. I know now that DS9 was accused of lifting a lot of details from the original B5 pitch, but I wonder if this isn't a nod back the other way, especially since Trill symbiotes were introduced in TNG, which predated the B5 pitch if I'm not mistaken.

Honestly, until now I have not seen any fanfic, fanart, where they talk about them or they simply appeared together. They are very unrecognizable, underrated and so on. That's why here I show you a loose sketch of these 2!

The explanation why they would be a beautiful couple in the series would be like this:

Compared to everything, Eagleator has no principles of being a good enemy. Why? The short they had on screen together did not show balance.

On the other hand, they did not last several years as enemies, although I will not deny that Eagleator is a very good enemy. I will deny that it is better than Owlmandor

Now I will explain again, Eagleator compared to Owlmandor does not have the balance that the two of them have, it was demonstrated more than 1 time that Flamurtle beats up Eagleator, EAGLEATOR ONLY BEATS HER WHEN HE ARE ALLYING WITH HIM ENEMY (hawkodile)

So... Owlmandor manages to hit Flamurtle at least 3 times, he has the skills to be her BEST enemy. Eagleator enjoys fighting with her, but she's not a better enemy partner than Owlmandor, that's my point.

And now, leaving off talking about Eagleator (the only purpose I mention it is for the ship), the two of them have history, unknown, but history together.

They have a past, possibly years of enemies, and this could be a great lesbian ship.

Again. Because compared to all of Flamurtle's interactions, she is the only one honored to have a past with her.

I refer to the last image, if you notice in the original there is Unikitty WITH THE SAME DECIMATOR GLASSES. And Puppycorn with THE SAME GLASSES OF GROOVETRON. Yes, the ship lacks foundations, but the only foundation I have is that they had a 20% chance of having an interaction, JUST A LITTLE MUCH.

Elsewhere, the palettes they share with null, such as yellow, black, green, yes and also medium purple and dark blue.

They have things in common apart from that, their rivalry with the main protagonists, Groovetron: richard, Decimator: hawkodile

They are only a little similar in design (but I am not the same) the gloves they have (like "dog collar")They both wear cool glasses, if you think about it a little, these 2 would get along well. Just give them a few weeks

What do you think of the ship of Blooom and Sky? 😂😂 Yeah, it sucks for me too but I'm looking for an analysis.

I love that you came to me for this lol.

First off, let’s get one thing out of the way. I will not be looking at this from my personal shipper standpoint, which I’m sure many of you expect me to do. No, I am approaching this objectively simply based on the actions of Bloom and Sky alone throughout the seasons. This is also just my opinion, therefore feel free to ignore it!

Despite what many people may think, I don’t believe BloomxSky to be inherently a bad ship. Deep, deep at its core, it’s a cute friends to lovers trope, I guess. However, it’s drowning in toxicity. I know that’s a very overused word these days thanks to the internet, but I think it’s effective in this conversation.

Now, I’m sure you’re expecting the “he lied to her about his identity!” argument because that seems to be the default. And while it’s valid and is key to their issues, I don’t even have to touch on that to prove the relationship was doomed from the start. I’d like to go back even further to the true foundation. And that’s Sky’s actions in 1x14. While it’s a very forgotten episode, it truly lays the groundwork as to why Bloom and Sky should never have gotten together and is also the reason it gets under my skin that he’s constantly referred to as “Bloom’s Prince Charming.” So let’s take a look at this episode, shall we?

In this episode, we find Bloom once again doubting her powers, and meets with Sky to vent. He then shows up at her dorm that night with his levabike saying “let’s go break into Cloud Tower so you can read more of that book you found about you.” But when they get there, what they don’t know is that the Trix have spelled the book into telling Bloom lies about her past, telling her that she’s not actually a fairy and instead she’s a witch. Sky’s reaction to this “revelation” is the takeaway. This boy literally recoils from her. In fact, he takes several steps back because he’s so horrified that the girl he has a crush on is a witch. Keep in mind, nothing has changed about her personality or who she is as a person. But Sky has the nerve to hang his head like she’s betrayed him because she no longer fits into his perfect image of her, and acting as if she’s been lying to him despite her finding this information out at the exact same time he did (which is ironic considering he’s actually been lying to her the entire time about his identity). And then, to top it off, instead of making sure Bloom gets back to Alfea safe, he lets her walk alone through the forest at night while he flies back to Red Fountain. “Oh well maybe she insisted” I don’t care. She’s clearly in a negative head space, her whole world has been turned upside down, and you’re letting her be alone right now in an environment she’s never navigated before. Take. Her. Home. You. Dick.

That aside, they also tend to draw out each other’s negative qualities. And as you can guess, those tend to play off each other. We quite literally can’t go through a single season without there being Bloom and Sky drama due to how central these issues are to their relationship. And, I don’t want to point fingers or show a bias, but the biggest points of contention in their relationship are Sky’s incessant refusal to go against his parents and his inability to tell Diaspro to get the fuck away from him. Bloom’s major negative contributions to the relationship are her intense jealousy and trust issues, yes. But where do those stem from? Sky giving her reason after reason after reason to reaffirm those feelings. He breaks off his engagement to Diaspro? He goes on a canoe trip with her over the summer. He brings Bloom home to meet his parents? Doesn’t defend her when his mother yells at her for offering a suggestion to help save his ex-fiancée. I could go on, but I’m just getting angrier. So I’m going to stop.

But I also think another point of contention is that Bloom frequently challenges Sky’s behavior. But in the end, she always sacrifices herself to allow him to persist in being a doormat. She’s changed quite a bit throughout the seasons to become a “perfect princess,” however I’d argue that in comparison, Sky has actually regressed. While he did challenge his parents by breaking his engagement to Diaspro, we’ve never seen that kind of backbone from him ever again. We should’ve seen that same behavior when Diaspro was assigned to be his personal guard or whoever she was supposed to be in s5. But alas we did not. He seems pretty content with living under his parents’ control for the rest of his life. And it makes you wonder why.

Personally, I think Bloom deserves better. And I’m not saying that with anyone in particular in mind. She just genuinely deserves someone who’s actually going to respect her and take her feelings into consideration. And Sky …. he just needs to go be with Diaspro since clearly he’s not interested in removing her from his life.

I’ll just leave it at that. It’s taken me 3(?) weeks to finish this, and it feels terribly disjointed, which I deeply apologize for (it’s been a rough couple of weeks). But if anyone would like a deeper view into anything I’ve brought up, I’d be happy to do so because I’m sure there’s more shit my migraine-addled brain can scrounge up about their disaster of a relationship.

1/28/2024-2/3/2024 Progress Update

This week was somewhat productive on my capstone pre-production.

One of the things I wanted to do was experiment and play with the use of multiple tools in conjunction with each other, mainly Midjourney and Photoshop AI. I wanted to see if I can create a background using Midjourney, based on something I filmed in real life, and stylize both the subject and background to help blend the two evenly using Photoshop AI. I would then use EBsynth to apply the look to the rest of the scene.

For those who don’t know, EBsynth allows users to stylize only a few frames of a video the way they like, and apply the style to all frames within a sequence. Its goal is to shorten animation time for individuals who need to painstakingly animate everything frame-by-frame.

To test everything out, I first filmed a toy spaceship on a green screen, and exported it through Premiere as a PNG sequence for EBsynth. The footage was rough, but enough to work.

Choosing one of the frames from that sequence, I sent it over to Midjourney to create a background. It looked good, but the ship came back warped by Midjourney’s interpretation.

With that however, I took it over to Photoshop and removed the warped subject using their content aware AI to make a blank background. I then brought in the original source image I used as a reference for Midjourney, and removed the green screen so only the ship remained. Using Photoshop’s Neural AI Filters, I applied a style to both layers individually to create the image I posted below.

I then repeated the process on different frames, removing the green screen, adding the background, and stylizing different angles of the ship so EBsynth had more reference points for the final project.

So far, it sounds like everything is working well. However, issues occurred was when I sent everything to EBsynth and compiled it in premiere pro for a final look. The ship came out wonderfully, but the background kept glitching due to the fact that I used the same static background for all the frames. The fact that there was movement in the foreground confused EBsynth, so it tried to make the still background move as well, causing it to distort and artifact.

To fix this, next time I will need to remove the subject from the green screen in After Effects before exporting as a PNG sequence. That way the green screen will be removed from the subject and I’ll be left with a single object. Using a HuggingFaces AI tool called ZoeDepth, I’ll able to get the background I made, and turn it into a 3D background using what’s called depth-mapping. Then I can apply the background separately through Premiere, or After Effects and add movement to it myself, removing the horrible artifacting that was being caused by EBsynth.

As I keep researching, i hope to continue experimentations in the future and find something that works. I have found other means of AI tools in filmmaking, including a blend of Stable Diffusion, ControlNet, and Blender. The learning for it seems pretty steep, but if it’s something I need to learn, I am open to accepting that challenge.

What got you into Azulaang?

A long post on my personal history with ATLA, the fandom and Azulaang in particular. It's a bit less on the ship itself and more on how I got into it. If you wanna hear my thoughts on why I adore it from a narrative viewpoint lemme know.

With Azulaang (and most atla ships for me, with some exceptions), I didn't really get into the ship traditionally. When ATLA was coming out, I watched it and tuned in every week, but I didn't interact with the fandom at all. The most I'd do is visit the old nick site, maybe look up art on deviantart (but these were mainly just funny comic strips and gags, maybe a dress up game), but our family had the one computer and most of the time my older brother used it to play runescape, and I wasn't savvy with the internet at ALL.

Come 2009, a bit over a year after the show ended, I got my first laptop as part of my school's program in year 5/6 (end of primary school). I still didn't have wifi at home, so I couldn't use the internet on the laptop there, and the school's internet was heavily blocked. We weren't allowed google back then iirc, and even when the ban on that was lifted a year later, we still weren't allowed to go on google images. But, there were sites that they hadn't blocked. Sites we could go on for fun. And that same year I discovered fanfiction dot net on the family computer.

So, I'd have a system. FF wasn't blocked at school. I'd open up internet explorer, go on fanfiction dot net, go to the atla tag, and - cause like, I had amazing taste as a kid, and Azula was my fave and the character I decided to latch onto for fanfiction content - open every Azula fic i could find. If it was a one-shot I would open it in the same window. If it was a multichapter, I would open a new window, and then open every chapter individually in its own tab. I'd have easily 300 tabs open just on fanfiction alone. Then when I went home I'd just CONSUME all the fics I could read. And, being young, I didn't have any preference for ships or content. As long as it involved Azula, I was happy to read. Even better, if it involved post-canon Azula stuff - I wanted to read about her recovery and a redemption arc!

While tyzula was definitely the big ship at that time (and zucest) for azula, I remember there being a few fics based on pairings I hadn't considered before; sokkla and azulaang. Granted I didn't think about ships at all, because I was 10, and shipping wasn't a thing in my brain except for me shipping myself with OOT Link. The azulaang ones, in particular, exactly fit my interests of post-canon recovery stories. So it had a good start.

Now that I'm older and I've been in and out of the fandom since, yknow, it started, I've always liked Azulaang. But I think with age I've come to appreciate just how nuanced the pair can be, it's wonderfully complicated and sometimes messy but I think they'd be a good fit.

But. yknow. ill save that for another time.

elaborating a bit more on Nick's importance to me, something i've only really recently felt more inclined to look back on and resurface in my mind given the..... nature... of this story 🥲 going back through my old facebook to find the images has definitely tightened my chest a lot as i'm writing this, but i think it's as good a time as any to share now i've done so.

trigger warning for domestic violence / physical assault. contains content made pre transition, identities and characters i no longer use, please respect this and do not use them

observing the bittersweet horrors below the cut

the movie released in 2016. i was 19 / 20 yrs old at the time. i was still a furry, identifying with the label, with a "fursona" all that jazz (i still have animal sonas and interest in costuming as my sonas now, i just dont identify as a furry or interact with the community / go to the meet ups anymore). most importantly i was in a co habiting relationship with my then boyfriend, who we will refer to as L (bc he certainly didnt act like a W lol....)

we've got the trigger warning out of the way so i'll be frank - L was my abuser. i was a domestic violence victim to this man. he was unpredictable, attacked me in my own home several times a week, over mundane things like a chore needing doing or not smoking inside or needing to wake him up at 4pm. it's stuff that still haunts me to this very day (high intensity therapy finally happening, end of this year) that i wont elaborate much more on but it was BAD, ok. really really bad, shit you only see happening in movies. i was nearly DEAD, on the last occassion. i lived that horror for over a year whilst we lived together, and the knock on effect its had... i have not been able to work since, i lost my job due to needing to be sent to hospital on my shift a couple days after and fired for my "inconsistent appearence" at work. i lost everything to this man. i've only just started coming out of my shell in terms of holding a relationship in the last 2 years, largely in part given to the bravery that self shipping has brought me.

so here we mention Zootopia. Zootropolis over here w/e it's not important - Zootopia released in the same year 2016, after much hype from myself it was one of few things keeping me going at the time the awaited release of this movie, and i fell hard for Nick. how much i related to his character (even more so in recent times) how tender he seemed underneath everything and his turn around, everything about this character comforted me.

and i started to selfship with him! i didnt know what selfshipping was at the time, it was just me drawing my at the time fursona with him romantically and had no idea the SS community existed until just a few years ago. i never really felt the need to ship with characters when i was in IRL relationships before - and the fact i started drawing myself with Nick was an eye opener for me that something wasn't right for me. that i was deep down seeking refuge in a fictional relationship bc i was starting to break down and come to terms with the fact my IRL relationship was not only unhealthy, but dangerous.

it was the comfort of shipping with Nick and that realisation it gave me that gave me the wake up call i needed. one morning L was on another of his hands on tyrades, and scared our poor elderly cat, seeing my baby scared and knowing i'd been putting my heart into new outlets, i ejected him from the property that day. sure, L was able to manipulate his way back into my life for another couple months later that year that ended the exact same way (for good this time, good riddance) but in that moment i knew i wanted better than what i had when i found that in Nick at the time.

while my self ship with him has been quite on and off since then, i'll never forget the part he played in essentially saving my life. aforementioned, L nearly KILLED ME one time, right towards the end of that second appearence i mentioned before. i'll spare the specifics, i'm lucky to be alive.

i don't know where i would be without that wake up call. Nick and my sweet elderly cat Clawey rest in peace, they both saved my life in 2016 and i'm forever grateful for that ;___;

i had some hesitation about artfight before i started, due to there being no clear explanation of how it works, and now i’m seeing the same thing with other people. so i decided to try and make my own little guide to the specifics! it really is easy to understand once you take part in it, but before that i see how one could get pretty anxious about not understanding the structure of the event!

so here’s an overcomplicated explanation that can hopefully help!

Before the event starts:

Ok! So to start off, I’ll go over some of the basics! To prepare for artfight, what you can do before the month starts is upload your characters under the submit button at the top of the site, when the even starts this is where you’ll be able to submit attacks too!

You are not allowed to start drawing any attacks before the event has started! If you want to spend time preparing, then use it to update your character references and information or plan who you want to attack!

Character profiles:

You can use up to 6 images as reference for each character and write as much or as little information about them as you’d like! It’s really up to you how much information to provide, as long as someone can reasonably look at the images you’ve provided and draw that character. If you only have the upper half of a character designed, then that’s fine as long as you don’t expect anyone to draw a fullbody for that character!

I’m currently updating all my characters to have a profile like this:

I think this is the right amount for me, since it’s enough information to understand the concept of the character being drawn! But some people might like to go into more detail, and others might just have images.

It’s also easy to link to a different site where you might have more information about the character

As for images, you can use art by other people of your ocs as long as you correctly credit them when uploading the image, which is as easy as this:

Bookmarks:

When you view someone else’s character, you have the option to bookmark the character. This adds them to your own list where you can easily find characters you want to draw. This is list is for your eyes only, the character’s owner has no way of knowing you’ve bookmarked their character unless you feel like telling them. You can assign the character a number to put them in a certain order if you feel like it. I have friends/mutuals characters at a 4 which is the highest number I’ve used to they’re at the top of my list. You can also write anything in a little box about the character for yourself to see. You might want to draw character x and character y together so you bookmark both of them and write “draw with character y” in their bookmark to remind your future self.

For example:

I assigned this character a 1 because of my specific sorting order and simply wrote “umineko” in their bookmark to remind myself that they’re an umineko oc and that’s why I bookmarked them!

Character tags:

Character tags are a newer feature on the site, but it’s as simple as it sounds! You can add up to 10 tags on a character and then they can show up when someone searches for that type of character!

These are my tags on Magical Star:

Just add anything you think someone might search that applies to your character, meaning the people who like to draw the same things as you can find you!

...not that I’m expecting anyone to search nyanbinary. I just like the word :3c

Permissions:

Permissions are rules you set yourself for anybody drawing your characters, the site has rules that apply to everybody, but you can set your own boundaries this way! This is most useful for whether or not you’re ok with suggestive content, gore, ship art, etc.

My permissions are pretty lengthy (I couldn’t screenshot the whole thing)

And I’ll use my brother’s as an example of something much more simple!

There are general character permissions that apply to all your characters and will show up on every character profile, and there are also character specific ones. For example, say you were ok with gorey art of most of your characters so you say that’s allowed in your permissions, but you have one character who you don’t want drawn like that. You could then use that character’s permissions to say “No gore for this one please!”

If you're not that bothered about all these things then no problem, you can just leave your permissions empty!

Teams:

While the teams are a big part of the concept of art fight, they’re ultimately inconsequential to most people outside of picking the aesthetic you like more! Attacking someone on the same team as you gets you less points, but I think more people are concerned with giving and receiving art then their team winning. Last year was cyberpunk vs steampunk, so people chose which team had the aesthetic they like more and went about their business drawing whoever they wanted to draw anyway. I personally didn’t have a preference for the teams so i went with cyberpunk because it made my name purple instead of brown! (We lost in the end but I’m still happier I had the name colour I liked more!)

If you join during the event you’ll be put on a team by random chance, but once this year’s theme is revealed (for 2022 it’s on Wednesday the 22nd of June) you’ll have a chance to pick which team you want to be on before the start of the event!

Points you get from attacking (which I’ll go over shortly) count towards your team’s total, and the team with the most points at the end wins! They don’t get anything really, it’s just good fun to get jokingly competitive!

Attacking:

So now you’re on a team, you’ve bookmarked some characters, it’s time to start attacking! An attack can be anything from a headshot sketch, to a fully rendered fullbody, to an animated gif, etc. Some people even make physical crafts that they can later mail to the recipient! Remember to follow the sites rules and the character’s permissions, but other than that you’re free to choose what kind of attack to make!

When you upload an attack you will be able to fill in the information about what type of attack it is. I’d love to get a screenshot for you but until the event starts the option isn’t on the site. From memory, some of the things it will ask you about are how clean the line art is, if it’s shaded or not, did you draw the whole character or just a headshot? They’ll all have multiple choice answers so you just need to figure out which once’s are the closest! Examples of what counts as clean or sketchy and things like that are on the site!

The information you put in will determine how many points you get for that attack, and that will count towards your team’s total. Attacking a member of the same team as you is called “friendly fire” and this will reward you with less points, but like I said before most people don’t really care about that.

For example, here’s two of my attack from last year. The one on the left is a coloured sketch headshot, and the second is a fully coloured and shaded chibi:

And that’s it, that’s your attack done! They might attack you back and draw one of your characters in return which is called a “revenge”, but they are under no obligation to. Likewise, you’re under no obligation to revenge every attack you get! Some people might say on their profile that they always aim to do revenge, but even that doesn’t mean you’re owed anything. If you attack someone in the hope that they’ll attack you back because you like their art, that’s fine but don’t act as if they owe you art if they haven’t personally promised you anything.

Both years I’ve taken part in art fight, I’ve gotten more attacks on me than I could return unfortunately. Think of it like any other day outside of art fight, if someone sent you a drawing of your character and demanded you draw something for them in return with no prior agreement to an art trade, that wouldn’t be fair on you! So the same logic goes during art fight. The hope is that everyone will get a good amount of art, but you can’t force anybody in particular to draw you something!

Extra info/advice:

Revenge chains = when a pair of people take turns attacking each other multiple times. I’ve never taken part in one but it looks like people usually agree to do so beforehand!

Defense = another word for an attack you received. On your profile your ‘attacks’ are your art and your ‘defenses’ are the art you’ve received.

If you want to increase your chances of getting more art I’d suggest using the search function to find artists that like the same things as you and give them a follow! A lot of my characters are magical girls, so I searched ‘magical girl’ and found other people that like to draw magical girls, I follow them, we see each others characters, now the people who like drawing magical girls are drawing each others magical girls and it’s more magical all around!

While I must remind you not to expect specific things from specific people, there are “stats” you can view on a person’s profile to see how much they attack people compared to how many attacks they receive. If someone has a high “battle ratio” it means they’ve given out more attacks then they’ve received. I think it’s good to attack people with high attack ratios because that means they’ve gotten a smaller amount of art so far, but of course it’s not as if you have to!

It’s ok if you can’t contribute that much, life circumstances are different for everyone! In 2020 I only managed to do 6 attacks, and in 20201 I did 26, pretty big difference! There’s also the question of whether you do a few quick sketches or one piece that takes longer in the same span of time with the same amount of effort, neither is objectively better.

The site will be laggy on the first day or so because the moment it starts there will be a lot of people online at once, don’t worry about this too much! If you finish an attack within that time but it’s difficult to upload while that site is like that, just wait a little while! This is also why it’s good to get all your character profiles sorted before the start. Last year I was trying to upload a character reference I finished right as art fight started, and it was painful!

Additionally, you might see a ton of people uploading attack right at the start that there’s no realistic way they could have drawn in that time. I’m talking a fully coloured and shaded drawing 5 minutes in, attacks flooding in the second the option to upload them is available. If you don’t remember, I earlier pointed out that starting the creation of an attack before the start time of the event is against the rules. If you’re going to cheat I can’t stop you, but at least don’t upload it right away and make it obvious lol.

If you really want to revenge someone but run out of time, no one will complain if you message them on other social media afterwards with the art you wanted to attack them with! I also did this last year since I had the discord of the person I wanted to attack back! Obviously you won’t get any points for it and it won’t be on the site, but no one would turn down a gift like that, and that’s really the point after all.

If you read all this, I hope I could help at least a little! It’s really simple once you have a go, but I personally found it intimidating that nobody explained how it works when I joined!

Yes you are right, “true mature love and closeness which old couples have developed with time”, I loove these kind of relations. Although this has nothing to do with Erwin and levi.

First Isayama-sensei didn’t make their relation to be seen as romance, as we can clearly tell the romance between eren and mikasa/ yumir and historia(…the canon ship as well ), nonetheless, he always referred to Erwin as a good friend for Levi (the guide book ), he didn’t implicate romance between them, as proof, most of aot watchers “out of the shipping community” didn’t see them romantically I can tell from myself as I was surprised when I first saw the ship and so were my friends (even the comment below support my idea).

Even so, we ignore these facts and consider “Their deep mutual respect, trust, understanding for each other and levi devotion for Erwin” it doesn’t require romantic love, and I dislike how romance is the first idea that bumps into shipper’s heads. Yes, levi admired Erwin so much in a way like what you said “admiring someone's personality, attitude, ideas and them as human” but you don’t realize the key difference between love and admiration, while love focuses on affection, admiration focuses on respect and approval.

Basically, true companions like erwin and levi had already shared and experienced everything, taking their relation to a romantic level means adding sexual affection, cause you can’t deny it but the difference between any type of love and romantic love is sexual attraction and passion,- don’t misunderstand me I believe sex activities are pretty normal for couples who chose to be in romantic ship-, but what I don’t get is why, why do the shipper insist on crossing the lines when their relation is already that beautiful why they cannot just “appreciate it ”like you said the way it is, that only means that they’re not mature enough to understand relations and they tend to sexualize everything. They need to understand that appreciating a relation doesn’t essentially mean that you like it in romantic terms.

Attack on Titan may not be a whole feelings and relations lessons type of anime but Isayama-sensei did surely succeeded to represent the most beautiful bond in the whole aot anime, for me, Levi and Erwin relation is the deepest and pure tie I’ve ever seen and I can’t stop and which to have one alike, so why do we sexualize it and be so blind to unsee the true meaning behind. And that’s the difference between our visions. It takes a certain level of maturity and experiences to understand what truly relations are about so they can stop confusing terms.

This is just my opinion and shipping is okay unless it’s legal and they’re not trying to make it canon when it’s not, and I usually never talk about these topics in their area I just ignore it but science it’s not a shipping post I’m setting myself free.

I also disagree that romantic love requires sexual relationship. You can certainly have sex without any intention of romance and romance without any sex.

I will not drastically alter the drawing once it enters the lineart stage. The drawing will take up to 2 weeks at MOST, if you do not have your drawing by then you are entitled to a full refund. I am starting college soon so I may be busier than usual and your drawing may take a little bit of time, please be patient!
