thank u sm for asking!! basically the au is based off of n's beta design(s) just for reference

and here are my own references (expand to see my art and more of the au story, cw for abuse and violence mentioned)

so the bulk of n's scarring, his missing eye and arm namely, were done by ghetsis with hydreigon. ghetsis is/was more overt with his abuse in this au, and wasn't afraid of almost killing n as a kid just to make a point to him. n was pretty young when he was attacked by hydreigon

the attack also indirectly taught n that there was no need for charisma in plasma's plan to liberate pokemon. if he could just liberate by force, why bother with any of the niceties and take longer to get the same result? and maybe as time went on he lost his original vision, it became less about "saving innocent pokemon" and more about "ending evil humans" if that makes sense

not super important but colress is the one to make n's prosthetic arm before he leaves the castle. he's kinda the same in this au, just a neutral scientist, but we might do more with him later idk

n still goes off to wander unova like usual, but he doesn't beat around the bush when it comes to his plasma affiliation and plans. his journey is finding zekrom, then taking it to the league to enact the takeover. he still runs into hilbert and hilda a few times. it's more like the manga than the games

in this au hilbert is more of a skittish pacifist, he's not really chasing after the pokemon league, just out on his own to escape a shitty home situation. he ends up facing off against n by being in the wrong place in the wrong time and it's just about the last thing he wants to do. but reshiram picked him and he has to fight this battle

n's plan fails of course. he gets arrested and ghetsis vanishes. hilbert was badly injured, and so was alder (who came to help hilbert, alongside the e4), and that combined with a lot of bystander pokemon and humans being injured by the takeover meant n was supposed to get a long, maybe lifetime sentence to prison

the only reason he ends up not being imprisoned for the rest of his life is because alder steps in. he sort of pities n, and he believes in rehabilitation over incarceration. he knows n never got a real chance at a good life, he was sort of doomed from the start. he strikes a deal with the court that states he has two years to prove n is capable of being a good person (through good behavior and a change of attitude towards humans; he doesn't have to love humans but if he could stop wishing an apocalypse on them that'd be good) or else they can put him back in prison

a lot of what my partner and i have covered in the au is based around n's time with alder and his family (drayden, iris, benga) and his rehabilitation process. a lot of it is still kind of ambigious/in the works. hopefully i'll post more art of it in the future and expand on it. thanks again for asking :]

1. What is Mushroom Oasis❔ What is the rating❔

Mushroom Oasis is a visual novel made in Ren'Py that was initially released for the 2023 Yandere Game Jam. It's currently still in development as a solo project. I post updates almost exclusively on this tumblr so if you're interested in the game, you're in the right place. The rating is 16+. How did I come up with the concept?

2. How many days will the game have❔ When will it release❔

I initially planned it to have 4-5 days! But with some new ideas and routes I'm considering, it might extend to 5+ days. As for a release date, it's done when it's done. So please allow me the time to develop it at my pace <3

3. Will the game be translated to other languages❔

I'll be honest, I had no plans to. However, a few people have reached out volunteering to. I'll say for now I'm open to the idea, but I prefer people asking permission first. First and foremost, ask first.

4. Will the game be available for mobile❔

For now, a hard no. I have zero clue how to make it available for mobile. Maybe I'll consider it once the game is fully released, but it's only for PC and Mac for now, as those are the default builds in Ren'Py.

5. Is NSFW content allowed❔

Considering the main love interest is an adult, that's fine. However I'd appreciate proper filtering of NSFW content considering the game's age rating means there's more than a few minors in the fandom. NSFW questions aren't allowed on the blog.

Keep it where it's meant to be with proper tagging separate from the '#mushroom oasis vn' tag. Using '#mushroom oasis nsfw' should be enough? I hope.

NOTE: Now, I understand some people are really passionate about Mychael being asexual, but I can't bring myself to police people for mischaracterizing his asexuality, nor would I want to gatekeep him either.

He's a fictional character first and foremost, and while representation is important!!!/gen /srs I don't want to bring attention to any such content in case it brings unwanted harrassment on that creator for posting such content.

Please don't do that. Let people make what they wanna make. It's unfortunate, but fandom will be fandom.

6. Will there be other love interests? Will it have multiple endings❔

Due to project scope, the only romance-able character for MO is Mychael himself. The game will have multiple endings however, ranging from romantic ending, platonic ending to creepy/bad endings (because, y'know, yandere).

7. Will there be official merch?

As a college student and soon-to-be fresh graduate, the income would be nice haha. As I keep working on the game (and once I'm done with college in March) I'll definitely look into making them someday!

He identifies as male, uses he/him pronouns and is a panromantic asexual. He's older than you think. ::-)

Initially it was 15th February! Simply because I happened to start designing him that day, hence his 'creation'.

My Strawberry Film Ep 6 Stray Thoughts

Last week, the kids went on a double date, and no one had a good time. Chika tried to be brave about it all because she knew Ryo didn't like her, but she eventually got mad because Ryo was being nice and thoughtful and blew up at him. Meanwhile, Minami drew a line with Hikaru and wouldn't agree to be his boyfriend, insisting that their current dynamic was fine.

I suspected Minami might be looking for her mom or some other family member. Curious how long she's known about this letter.

I really hope we get some GL out of this show. Every time Minami and Chika interact, my hope rises.

Damn, Minami, you ain't have to call my boy out like that. She's right, though. When I was deep in my closet angst, I had no real appreciation for any signals women were sending my way.

Whoa, we just walked into what feels like ARO-GAY Solidarity. Minami can see what's happening between everyone else, but says she doesn't feel these things herself. The reference to having a lover but not a boyfriend feels like the kind of aro-ace admission we got in Koisenu Futari. Very much connecting with Ryo holding his feelings in because it's about him not wanting things to change.

Oh, Hikaru, do you even know who or what you're jealous of now?

I'm relieved that Chika and Ryo are still talking even if it's awkward.

Gross, Hikaru. That's a yikes from me, dawg. This kind of jealousy is very unappealing.

"Friends don't have rank." The Gen Z mind cannot fathom MySpace.

I like the way they're cutting back and forth between these conversations, particularly because Hikaru is doing so poorly as Ryo and Chika move past the rejection. I also really love Ryo refusing to pretend that the whole event didn't happen.

"Maybe I don't want to eat it today," feels so layered. I am so invested in Minami now.

Genuinely, I'm really enjoying this episode as payoff for the moody angst around what it means to like someone being the primary question driving the characters this week.

Well, this finally got interesting for me! I'm really glad I hung in there with this show. It was rather quiet for a long stretch there, and I had to work to care about the heterosexual motivations, but I like the show taking them seriously to unpack the space between people who like each other and what it means to express and respond to feelings. Really excited to see how things potentially come to a head next week.

1. Unfortunately no, I don't have requests open. I can't afford to do art for others for free, and now that I just got my first job I'm gonna be a lot busier than I used to be, so finding the time/motivation to draw is gonna be harder for me to navigate

Also I feel like it defeats the purpose of me having commissions open while also making art catered for others for free, I gotta make money somewhere yknow

And from what I've seen in this community a lot of the requests artists get are for one-off prompts or characters, which just isn't my cup of tea. I can't get invested in a character or a drawing that is just like a one-time thing, if that makes sense?

I don't want that to snowball with me getting flooded with requests from people for random prompts they wanna see drawn out

I hope that makes sense, and please don't see this as me being upset at the question, I just like to be thorough with my answers and explain why /gen

2. I do! Unfortunately not a whole lot that I draw, my main female oc is Vanessa, and I just love her to bits. Her and Damien are stuck like glue so most of my drawings of her also include her lovely hubby~

If you're wondering about me drawing female weight gain, I'm just not really into that, for a number of reasons, but the main one being my feelings towards the female weight gain community, and how it treats women mostly just as an object for pleasure. As an afab person, it just makes me really uncomfortable how I see women portrayed in the feedism community, since from what I can tell most of the people that create/seek out that kind of content are cishet men just looking to get off.

I know that's not the entire female wg community but it's unfortunately the majority of what I've encountered, and it's just turned me off from the subject completely. There are *very* few times I'll see female weight gain portrayed in a way I can appreciate, and those few are like little gold nuggets that I gotta find by sifting through all the shitty stuff, it's just not worth it for me

It just feels dehumanizing, idk

As a fat person who has always been fat, and who is (unfortunately) still perceived by the general public as female, I've seen first hand the way society treats people like me, the backhanded comments and fatshaming and diet culture, and the horrible things I've been called before.. I see it all too often in the female feedism community, it's just a big no no for me overall

3. If I were to ever open up requests, I would say yes, they would only involve my ocs. I use this blog sort of as a public sandbox, where I can just kinda play around with my ocs and share my art with you all. I want the focus to be on my ocs and my own original content, with the exception of my friends and mutuals ocs which I do enjoy drawing from time to time

TLDR, yes, if I hypothetically opened requests they would only be for my ocs, just to keep my blog clear of clutter and random prompts I'm not interested in. I don't want to add another layer of stress to my life with requests and stuff that I can't keep up with

Honestly, I didn’t really like episodes seven or eight that much? They weren’t necessarily bad but I personally found them unfulfilling.

[Spoilers]

First of all, Fiore and Ellie were weird boots to me, I figured they were for sure set to go to the merge (it seemed like Ellie was building up to be a stronger antagonist than she was, Gabellie angst was mostly unfulfilled, Fiore didn’t make up with Alec, I think Fiore and Jake would’ve been a cool alliance, Jake and Ellie’s rivalry was barely touched on, etc). And while I think Gabby will be an interesting villain, I still feel like her motive being Ellie’s elimination is more underwhelming than her motive being Ellie’s betrayal; also Gabby’s character relies very heavily on Ellie, and I really wish we saw her make more decisions divorced from their relationship.

Also I didn’t really like Ally and Jake’s beef. Jake is my favorite character but this episode he really just bitched the whole time and it feels like he’s devolving back to his mid season one self. If he’s meant to be healing this season, let him heal, and if he’s supposed to be an antagonist, let him be an antagonist. I feel like the writers sometimes forget which direction they’re taking him in. If this was spurred on by finding out Tom has a “boyfriend”, the anger should be directed at Tom more (maybe he doesn’t have an outlet because he doesn’t want to hurt Tom? Idk). Like Ally is such a bad target for him, I know she’s friends with Ashley and he’s insecure about that because Ashley’s really the only person he has left in the game, but like…I dunno, their beef just isn’t entertaining, I guess it’s in character for him especially if this is him sort of descending into hatred but I just personally feel like it’s unnecessary the way they went about it, I feel like quiet sabotage or him having internal conflict about Ally but playing nice would be more enjoyable to watch. I’m also kinda sad that Aiden, Jake, and Riya didn’t interact more in the challenge; I’d love to see Aiden and Jake actually have a conversation, or Riya and Jake team up. Jake and Aiden should especially talk now that Jake knows Aiden’s not a threat since Tom has this supposed boyfriend, like I feel like we’ve kicked the Tomden drama bucket now that we’ve had this reveal— and if we haven’t, Riya hates Aiden too, so I’m not sure why Jake and Riya aren’t interacting.

Aside from this, I did like Tess (as usual), the challenge was very fun (loved the space theme and the outfits), and Alec and Riya’s friendship is pretty cool. Also I don’t really like Yul, but he was kinda funny this episode, I think I just really like his voice acting lol. I’m also excited to see them do more with Emily, and Trevor’s feelings for Derek being confirmed was kinda adorable. And of course, as usual, the animation and designs and VA’s were fantastic. I think I’ll appreciate the episode more once I see how it plays into the entire season and know where they’re taking the characters, but for now I just felt like they made some questionable writing decisions that I would personally change. Sorry this is long, I had a lot of thoughts and I also suffer from Chronic Jake Brain Rot.

Sakanaction is back!! Screaming crying throwing up. They were gone for many years because the front-man struggled with depression and cluster headache. This isn't a new song but I've been listening to them a lot to get ready for the comeback. This song is mostly instrumental so I can have it on repeat for hours tbh especially if I'm in my hyper-focus mode.

Sakanaction is definitely coolest band in Japan. I think they could be big internationally if they were from the anglosphere. I mean look at these legends:

you might have talked about this before but what do you think of fruitiger aero? and other such styles. i wouldnt say its my thing personally but i think its pretty neat 👍

fruitiger aero my friend frutiger aero. i love U frutiger aero but mostly just in comparison to all the flat minimalist UI design that replaced it immediately after, frutiger aero is like the last gen of futuristic-feeling tech aesthetic design that i don't actively hate [cuz i think hexatron is tacky and ipod minimalism feels too cold and unfriendly]. frutiger aero is EXTREEEEEEEEMELY 2007 to me and i have an appreciation for how kinda tacky a lot of it feels, since it goes hand in hand with mcbling and in comparison to Y2K futurism you can Really feel the maximalism

i said a while ago how i don't like windows vista's UI being glossy black glass because while it's sleek it feels unfriendly compared to the soft plastic feel of XP and i stand by this but i would definitely take glossy textured glass VS the flat minimalist shit everything is these days at least it was interesting. also i genuinely fucking adore the specific shading technique a lot of frutiger aero shit uses that makes it look like glass with the like darker half circle and gradients. y'know like old iOS icons

i genuinely really like that it's a nice lookin way to shade rounded glass and it makes these things look like hard candy and i wanna pop em into my mouth.

anyway tl;dr i think frutiger aero is fine but it's not my favorite. also people lumping frutiger aero in with Y2K futurism makes me mad cuz they're like a decade apart, Y2K is like 1996-2003 frutiger is like 2006-2011 they have Some Similarities but they are Distinct Entities

Tell me what are some things you'd like to see for Hux in the future of DBD. Cosmetic wise, lore wise.

Are there any changes you'd make for him in game, buffs or otherwise :3

Honestly cosmetic wise, I want to see basically anything at this point. Hux is one of the charcaters that unfortunately keeps dealing with the short end of of the stick when it comes to skins. I understand that his design does limit people to making anything for him but come on, he's still worth a try. Sure the cosmetic he got from the fit is nice and the "you are what you kill one" is a pretty great Portal reference, but I'd appreciate more cosmetics that aren't just recolors. (I am excited however because there it was hinted that he might get a cosmetic that's him before Gabriel burnt him!!!)

Lore wise I would really like to see what went on with the production of the Hux-A7 units. Just interested in what the process was there, but it also makes me wonder if anything went wrong with #13(aka Hux himself) considering how he is the only unit the strayed from the rest of the group. It's like there was something off about him and he ventured out elsewhere before being zapped by the alien crystal. It would be nice to see what life was for Hux A7-13 before he became aware.. Like I'm curious to see was he already technically active before the departure date? Was he only ever powered on when they arrived to Dvarka? How long has he lived for? (This is also for...fanfic purposes because of that one specific fic I've been wanting to write involving Gabriel lol please ask me about that because I have been itching to write it along with the next part to the Praetorian fic but need to get the smut out of the way first)

Okay so in game...oh geez let's see:

Something seriously needs to be done about the EMPS. It's insane how easily a survivor alone is able to control Hux's power. Not even add-ons are enough to discourage the use of EMPS. Now imagine all four survivors carrying an EMP each, it's hell. And the fact that you can have the EMP on for 45 seconds is a crazy fact alone; you can get some serious distance in that time period and have disabled so many biopods already because you also have to take into consideration its radius!).

I do think the EMPs should become limited like Wesker's and Nemesis' respective items, or they should at least hold some kind of punishment like what Skull Merchant's drones did(aka receiving a tracker when disabling her drones). Like have some of his add-ons be built in maybe?

Or if not limited at least do something like with Xenomorph's turrets. The EMPS continue printing the second you take one, the turrets at least make you wait after you've taken one. And after 3 have been taken from the same control station you have to wait for that stuff to be remade.

OR at least give him more biopods. Once again, you can take out some many biopods + slipstreams in 45 seconds)

Yes there are add-ons that kind of do that but even then they're sort of useless (the only one I can think of is Live Wires which I like to use but what's the point when everyone is on the opposite side of the map and they've dispersed or finish their gen by the time you got there?)

His add-ons I feel really do need some buffing because the only one Singularity mains really consider using is the Soma Family Photo which makes you faster when in Overclock mode but still reduces your timer for it. And that's ONLY if you succesfully slipstream to a survivor of course(I say this because I still have some trouble with it)

His add-ons really rely on having survivors slipstreamed and that's pretty hard to do when they can constantly remove the temporal slipstream

I don't care if I'm called biased for this but I do not believe Hux needs a nerf of any kind. Slipstreaming is something that takes a good while to learn, I'm still learning how to do it properly myself. I think Overclock mode is a decent reward for a successful slipstream (and it doesn't even last that long???). It just sucks that there's some asshole out there trying really hard to make him the next "chess killer" which hopefully doesn't lead to an unecessary nerf.

There's more I'm sure of it, but this is what I can think of at the moment. I'll add more after I get bullied as Singularity again lololol

Also this is more at gameplay itself rather than Hux's ability and such but they need to lower his chase music's volumeor something. I personally rely a very lot on sounds and I lose survivors often while playing Singularity because of both his music and his mechanical whirring.

And also his hook??? I never really miss attacks when I play as killer but there's something about Hux's blade that makes me miss because I always think I'm much closer than I apparently am.

Hi hi!! I would be honored to Teeth is everything I want to be!!

So Teeth is a being of indeterminate origin. The form you see - aka the vaguely humanoid forms, with varying degrees of monster - is what I've coined his "calcified" form. His true form, his "marrow" form, looks something like this.

Not so convenient for interacting with people. Teeth is an amorphous blob of what can be best described as long-legged insects that were dropped in a blender and have returned for revenge. He takes his various calcified forms to interact with others, and can take any form he so wishes - though the forms that come most naturally to him are the ones I draw the most. Teeth can look like just about anyone he wants to, and the only real difference will be his eyes!

Teeth lives in a tree in the centre of a dark forest, where he hoards cool things he finds. These things can range from the bones of animals that he's found and scavenged, cool rocks he picked up, or trinkets he stole from humans. Since he isn't a human himself, he knows very little about them or how they work - he does have a strong desire to BECOME a human though. It's why he's so fiercely protective of any human who's nice to him! He can learn from them!

Some folks have compared Teeth to a demon, but I prefer to call him a cryptid in all honesty. He's the kind of thing you see out in your late night walk that appears out of the corner of your eye, steals your wallet only to take the shiny coins out, then disappears into the woods.

Even in his calcified form, Teeth is still an amorphous blob underneath the solid outer form - it's visible in his ref without clothes, with the dark splotchy patches being parts he simply chose not to turn to flesh. This means he's largely impervious to any forms of damage, because he has no blood, bone, or organs - if you were to unzip him like a plastic bag, you'd see he's just a dark, writhing mass underneath his artificial skin. Every part of him is very much alive and feels pain, and can turn back to the blob at any time - he uses this as a quick defense mechanism, because that means he can turn injured parts of his body into gigantic clusters of spikes.

Overall, he's a very chaotic good guy. He means well, really, he's just a bit oblivious to how humans do things. He's very easy to make friends with, and he protects people he considers his friends with everything he has.

Thanks for showing interest in my OCs and my work!! I appreciate you! Teeth is very special to me as my persona, and a lot of his little quirks are inspired by my own quirks. It makes me happy to know people like him!!

Mmh, this is a tough one, because I think there's no bad blorbofication. Like I touched on when talking about homogenization, people taking blorbo on crazy trips isn't an issue to me. Maybe a better term here would be woobifying

The best example I can think of within my fandoms is perhaps Thrawn? I'm going through a renaissance with him I guess... I'm watching rebels at long last and I can't wait for him to show up and make the Empire half-competent.

He's a very compelling character, but the new canon gives him an anti-hero slant, which I think is a little unfortunate, as fandom multiplies that into a bit of 'Thrawn did nothing wrong' and 'he's just a cute smartass doing his best'.

But Thrawn shines as a villain. Which he is. He aligns with the Empire for his interests. For the plans he designed. He does orbital bombings and closes his eyes on slavery and is mostly annoyed at the Death Star for being a stupid waste of resources and taking away from his own, better optimised death squadrons! He's. Not. A. Good. Guy. In legends he has a guy killed on his bridge for being incompetent.

And yeah it's the same bridge where this happens:

Now I know my own original First Fic™️ is Thrawn on holidays, and that I put it on hiatus before I got to the War Crimes™️, so it definitely looks like I'm part of that problem. It's just a general trend. Thrawn being cute with Eli. Thrawn being a harmless hottie. Thrawn being relatable. Thrawn saving his people with some hard logic and art appreciation.

Not enough Thrawn being the bad guy he canonically is. There is that out there though and it's great!! So it's not an actual complaint either.

17 — there should be more of this type of fic/art

For fic, actually gender-neutral readers, not fem readers hidden under a "GN Reader" tag. Your reader is not properly gender-neutral if they have curves, lush hair, full lips, etc. sometimes people try and it just slips past them. Sometimes you really feel like they just slapped the tag on without another thought.

It's hard when it comes down to smut, but it's not complicated to be fully neutral when you're dealing with gen fic. Which ties into another thing I'd love more of : second person GN reader fics that aren't smutty/horny but rather gen. I write them because I rarely find them, and I think they're fun. There's definitely an audience for it!

I don't have anything for art. I'm always happy to see people's work and don't have anything in particular I'm searching for when browsing a fandom. Just curious to see what's up, and happy with whatever I get.

To say, that's really nice, I'm super happy to hear it, I love that me doing a nosedive into an old video game has made some people revisit that old ember of interest in themselves, and maybe reconsidered the canon content. LOVE that. Sometimes I love it so much that I say it to myself at random as a reminder! So I appreciate that a LOT /gen I guess I hope you can tap into that passion!

How I feel about this character: Love them all! Love them to death, and I'll keep defending them until my last breath. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Any/all the people I ship romantically ship with this character: Currently, the only B5 ship I have is Gakuyuki. The others are paired with OCs (for Next Gen purposes, hehe...) I do have a soft spot for Ren/Hazama, but it's constantly floating between "Nah, won't happen" and "Bad idea but still funny to think about..." and "But it's just so good!!!"

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character:

Gakushuu: His rivalry with Karma, especially in sibling AUs.

Ren: I just love the idea of Maehara having a one-sided rivalry with a clueless Ren.

Seo: A sibling-like relationship with Rio, filled with bilingual bickering, curses, snarky remarks, and even diss tracks.

Araki: Him and his dad; I get the feeling they have a good relationship from what little extra info we got.

Koyama: His one-sided hatred with Okuda. So now you have one E-student vowing to best a Virtuoso, who is barely aware of their existence, and a Virtuoso trying to best a an E-student, who is barely aware of their existence.

My unpopular opinion for this character: For Gakushuu, I got nothing. As for the others....

Ren: If you're gonna hate Ren for the library scene, then you better also hate Maehara, Okajima, Itona, Irina, Korosensei, Rio, and every other perv in the series because some of them make Ren's actions look tame in comparison. Just saying...

Seo: The fact he genuinely cares about his friends makes him redeemable, likeable, and even interesting.

Araki: "Only Ren and Gakushuu are hot. Everyone else is ugly." My guy, you are not ready for the nerdy Ikemen type yet.

Koyama: His face and laugh are iconic.

Also...

They're called the Big Five, not Gakushuu and Friends! Remember them, people!

One thing I wish would happen/ had happened with this character in canon: More screentime of course. I know AC isn't really their story, but it would've been nice to have just one chapter showing us their daily lives, or at least give them all character profiles, not just Gakushuu. What I wouldn't do for offical birthdays....

A B5 spin-off would be greatly appreciated, no matter how unlikely it may sounds. Heck, I'm okay if it were just a one-shot, just give me some B5 content, Matsui!

Also, Seo got done dirty in the timeskip! Why is it we learned what the previous four did for a living, but Seo's section was just, "He and Whatsherface went to the same university and repeatedly dated on and off, yet despite this ridiculously clear sign this so-called relationship is an utter failure, Idiots #1 and #2 believe the other is their one true love."

Even Ren's section was better than this. Sure, he almost started a bloodbath and got lectured by Shuu for it, but at least he got some much-needed character development out of it. Every single Virtuoso got a happy ending but Seo, who is stuck in an unhealthy relationship. No character development, no clue what he was majoring, like come on! Have mercy on my insecure boy! Preferably by him dumping the harpy he's been shackled with since middle school once and for all.

Favorite friendship for this character: Ren and Gakushuu (Wholesome), Seo and Araki (Wholesome), Koyama and Seo (Chaos)

Yeah, I wasn't planning for my first ask to be this long, but ah well, more B5 content for Candy 😊

Top Games Played in 2023 - Number 2: Fire Emblem Engage

2. Fire Emblem Engage (Switch)

Fire Emblem Engage was the first game in the series I was straight up disappointed to see announced. The main character looked awful, and the tone felt way too young. I figured this was going to be my least favourite Fire Emblem game.

But once I actually played it, I realized it was surprisingly good.

What I Like

Engage is basically the opposite of Fire Emblem Three Houses in terms of where it excels and where it fails. Three Houses has unremarkable maps and combat gameplay, so Engage has some of the best maps in the series! Seriously, this game made me remember the combat in Fire Emblem is supposed to be fun and not just something you push through to get to the story. There's multiple different map designs, different objectives than just "kill the boss/all enemies", and great enemy placement. They also brought back the Weapon Triangle which was inexplicably missing in Three Houses.

I also really like the Emblem specific maps brought from previous games in the series. Some of them are weird choices (Lyn's is from Binding Blade even though she's not in that game) but they're all fun to play. It's also interesting to see how maps designed for different combat systems are adapted for Engage, especially the large map of Genealogy of the Holy War.

And while the general story and writing of Engage does not live up the 3H, there are some really good characters and pieces of writing in this game. A lot of it is in later Support conversations and further in the story, so it really does get better as you go.

In particular this has my favourite version of the series mascot Anna; they turned her into a child but kept her as a crafty merchant.

Re-classing seems less broken than some other games, especially because permanent skills aren't unlocked through it. So it's really a case of what class you want (or possibly what growth rates you want) rather than pushing through a mediocre class for a good skill. I also appreciate that no one class seems to be the best like the Wyvern Lord in 3H.

Instead skills aren't learned through the Emblem rings, which act as equipment you can put onto a character as needed. However you get certain great passive and active abilities from wearing them that you can't ever permanently learn otherwise, so there's a strategy in deciding which Emblem to equip on which character.

The in-between home base sections are very streamlined and can be finished much quicker than previous games.

It's also nice to see the classic characters with current gen Switch graphics. Speaking of graphics, they are a HUGE step up from 3D. Plus this game has a much more vibrant colour scheme.

Engage also has by FAR the best combat animations of the series since the GBA days. It really feels like they're trying to adapt those animations with how lively the characters move. There's also cool small touches such as low level characters doing dodge animations when the enemy misses, but high level characters deflecting the attack when it misses.

There's also a cool new class where the character rides a wolf and fights with a knife. That's like objectively cool. And the wolf does flips!

What I Don't Like

As I mentioned before, Engage does not have great writing most of the time. The story is pretty average, and a lot of the characters are just fine. Even the good ones like Alfred often need some investment into Support conversations before they really shine, writing wise.

Some of the Emblems in particular just feel out of character and very one-note. Lyn gets this the worst given originally she's a reckless person focused on family and revenge as well as her homeland. Here she just...talks about her homeland. None of the other stuff.

The game also makes a horrible first impression. Not just the trailer. Not just the cheesy Saturday morning cartoon theme song (which I like but not for a Fire Emblem game). But the initial few chapters have you with just the ugly main character and two annoying same-looking kids. It takes some time to get going, and I can see people drop it before getting that far.

You also have the ability to unlock outfits, but they only show up during the home-base. So they are basically pointless.

One MAJOR and inexplicable negative is that there are no paired endings except for the main character. Practically every Fire Emblem game since they started releasing in the West have had paired endings, so it's really weird they're missing here. I want to ship some of these characters, and the supports make it seem like they should end up together, but too bad for me.

Final Thoughts

Fire Emblem Engage feels like a return to form after the unusual (but great) departure of Three Houses. As someone who was worried the future of the series wouldn't return to these gameplay highs, I'm glad to be proven wrong. I just wish it had a better looking main character and general introduction so people didn't dismiss the game.
