you had long deleted genshin, since you had other things to do. you had wanted to go back to the game for a while now, now that you were less busy, but there was just one little problem.

it was now taking up nearly triple the amount of space that it was when you uninstalled it. around 300 whole gigabytes.

no installing new files, no checking for anything, no nothing…. just an immediate pan to the gates of celestia.

and then the game just… opened. no loading time, once again. no getting stuck on the geo symbol, nothing. nada. just a smooth entrance into what you had to assume to be teyvat — but your surroundings didn't really support that claim.

the grass was brown and just looked off, the sky was gray. a darker shade than, say, mond’s walls, but it was like one of those game crashes.

well, except you could still move around.

you moved your current character around (the traveller? since when were they the only one in your team?) and decided to open the map after not figuring out where you could possibly be.

hold on, this is springvale? since when?

eveything looked dead, like it had been rotting for a century. you tried to ignore it though, and teleported to the inside of mondstadt. surely this was just some glitch, right? one that would fix itself if you teleported?

maybe the world loaded incorrectly, maybe the fact that nothing took time to load meant that it couldn't load, maybe this or that, maybe…

maybe this really was how the game looked normally. you hadn't done any quests though, so you wondered if it could be restored.

you took a screenshot of the your surroundings — the stone, worn down and dirty. the houses which looked to be in a horrible state, and… the npcs, all sickly and pale, like they were starving.

you went to reddit (yes, reddit), and posted the screenshot, asking if it was normal.

you closed the game and decided to take a nap, too tired to really deal with this shit any further.

while you slumbered, people replied to your post.

I can’t believe I found people who think about this the exact same way as I do. I don’t get these hardcore buddie stans who suddenly try to make it look like buckTommy shipper are the toxic ones. I haven’t seen a single BuckTommy shipper who was rude without a reason (maybe a bit defensive about their CANON ship). Whereas I’ve seen plenty of incredibly toxic buddie stans who insult everyone who doesn’t ship their ship or share their opinions.

Another thing and don’t get me wrong Im not defending anyone. But I’ve seen many people heavily bullying the marisol actress because she’s apparently homophobic (not saying she isn’t or is) and wanting her to be gone beacause of this reason but totally ignore the alleged racism of ryan (again not saying he is racist or not, i dont know them personally) just because he is part of their beloved ship. By their logic Ryan should leave the show too.

Hey anon, it took me some time to answer your ask (chaotic life stuff lol) but I’m glad to finally have time to talk about this first part with you.

I’ll preface by saying I won’t get involved in actor drama, no matter how true or toxic it is because I don’t have enough information nor am I qualified to talk about the issues they mishandled. I’ll just say that, no matter who does bad things, they should be held accountable.

Okay, back to the main point: yes, it’s very strange how b*ddie st*ns are behaving towards the canon bi!buck thing. Both with people who ship bucktommy but also with the creators and actors on the show. Regardless if they are right or not about b*ddie being canon, this is not how you act with entertainment, specially with the people giving the content.

I hate to bash but it looks and sounds a lot like a toddler throwing a tantrum because they didn’t get a specific toy.

And toddlers only throw tantrums because they are brand new humans who are learning how to behave. They don’t know any better so they react with outbursts and repeated demands because it’s the only way they know to get the attention of the person taking care of them.

If I’m not mistaken, the main audience for the show is 18-45. NO ONE here should be yelling in comment sections “we want buddie! we want buddie! we want buddie!” as if they would immediately get it. It’s not how it works and it’s frankly embarrassing to see a bunch of adults acting like that for everyone to see.

And I can’t stress it enough, I’m not putting myself on a high ground here and saying I’m a better person by shipping bucktommy, as I’m sure there might be a percentage of fans out there being rude and annoying as well. But at least I’m keeping my conscience clear by not acting like me shipping two characters is something big enough in my life to ruin my enjoyment of a whole show in case my favorite ship doesn’t become canon.

I hate how fandoms behave as if they can have control over the content they are consuming. We aren’t entitled to anything and if there is supposed to be ANY discourse about which character was supposed to end with, that should happen AFTER the show ended! The story isn’t over yet! So why are b*ddie st*ns so stressed? If a show is making you this angry and demanding, please step aside a little, give it some distance because that’s not how consuming content is supposed to make you feel.

And I say that last part with sincerity because I too got way too involved with fandom discourse in the past, to the point that I had to distance myself from certain shows because being that involved made me upset.

Im just tired at this point you know. Im trying to protect myself as much as possible. Im not in the bird app, I don’t follow the show or the actors on social media, im avoiding interviews like the plague. All I want from this experience is to watch the show, gather my thoughts, form my opinions, log onto tumblr and reblog the cute stuff I see about my favorite ship without having to worry about whatever the hell is going on outside my pretty little bubble

Today in sociology we did an assignment where we had to read through statistics about marriage, reasons why people get married, divorce rates, views on how certain couples influence children, etc. and then we had questions at the end that had more to do with how *we* felt about marriage and what we thought about the other things brought up in the article and when I tell you it lowkey physically hurt to write out how I didn’t really care for marriage. good god

Ultimate tell of most USAmerican movies/shows being produced in California is when the foley artists put loon calls in scenes that are, in ascending order of hilarity, (1) during the dead of winter when all the lakes are frozen over, (2) way too far south, or (3) not remotely close to water of any kind

So imagine you’re Rue, and you meet someone you instantly click with, who you recognize as a fellow outsider in their circle. You’re so inspired by this feeling of possible connection that you reveal your true self, and when you do, you see him only marvel at it, at your bravery, at you.

You also see the way his behavior earns him scorn within his court, even as he dedicates himself to their service, the way you have dedicated yourself to service with the Bloom. At the conclusion of the meeting in the tailor’s shop, you ask him to consider himself, pointing out that no one else around him seems to be doing so. He doesn’t disagree, says he can’t disagree. You think maybe you’re getting through to him. He gives you his medal of courage. You implore him one last time to take care of himself, to protect himself.

Then, at the masquerade ball, you see him, in an instinct, when fireworks go off unexpectedly, leap to protect you, not his court superiors, those he has a duty to. You exchange flirtatious words and dance cards, and watch him very deliberately eat his own dance card in front of you. The tension is there, palpable, humming in the air. You dance all night. The rest of the world fades away. He whispers to you his full, true name.

You write him a letter, your whole heart laid bare on the page. You tell him you love him, that you wish to know him, to be with him, always and forever.

And, as far as you know, he simply doesn’t respond. Not even to politely decline. The next time you see him, he’s been wounded, but won’t even consider his own comfort and safety, still wholly concerned for the reputation of his court, and apparently he’s recently been promoted. You ask him his thoughts on the dismantling of the courts, and all he can say is, “where would the orders come from?” and your heart sinks, as you begin to realize he is not who you hoped. Once again you ask him of his own happiness, and find no real answer, just a deflection consumed with obligation. Still, you do wish him happiness, and you tell him so.

Then at the theater you see him with a Lady of the Seelie Court on his arm, the picture of a political arrangement, and ah, of course. It all does make sense now. You fully did misread him, and the situation. His station and reputation are all that truly matter to him after all. Your feelings could not help him with that, so why would they be worthy of a response?

You don’t push, though, or confront him, you simply excuse yourself to be alone, to think. You find BINX, who tells you he has deep feelings for you, and you want to believe them, but how can you? She has no reason to lie, but you’ve told him how you felt, and he’s made his choice, hasn’t he? Perhaps the feelings are real, then, but his duty to his court is still more important, in which case, what does it matter? You’ve spent your entire life hiding, an outsider in a court that kidnapped you, entertaining others as a way to survive. Do you really want to continue putting your happiness second place to obligation?

And still when he finds you, and Andhera and BINX scatter, you allow yourself one final moment of hope… and he has the unmitigated nerve, after all the moments you’ve shared, after you’ve confessed to him your honest feelings, to confront you about the dissolution of a nonsense political marriage. You attempt to disengage, but he doesn’t let you, once again focused on the stupid reputation of his stupid court. So you tell him why you did the things you did, admit that you were foolish to think what you did about him, and again all he can speak of is service, accusing you of manipulating him on behalf of your court, as if it has ever been about that. You told him how you feel, and he still accuses you of this?

So you tell him again, foolishly maybe, but love has apparently made you a fool. Still, maybe he will, at the very least, finally understand that your actions were not out of malice, were not to malign or elevate any court, that none of that even matters to you. That it’s irrelevant.

Because at the end of the day, all you’ve ever wanted is to make others happy, just like he has… all but for a few beautiful moments, where you allowed yourself to think that maybe, together, you could finally, perhaps this once, enjoy a taste of that same happiness, just for yourselves.

Doug Peterson and Russ Frushtick from Law Abiding Citizen - the fandom has gotten real quiet over time but I still love them so much ♥ There's a lot you can read into or leave silly with their dynamic, I still wholeheartedly recommend the emerge, transformed series as one of my favourite interpretations of Russ especially 💕

The Editor from Jazzpunk - he's just a silly little guy! It's honestly such a shame that he's only really in the last chapter, I would love to see him explored more, he's the worst ♪

Tatsumi Souichi from Koisuru Boukun - genuinely one of my all-time favourite characters, and The Only Good Tsundere as far as I'm concerned lol. I'm gonna write about him! I've got my fanfic and video essay sitting in my drafts, but like agh!! He's so interesting!!! So beautifully flawed - he's internally consistent which is my Favourite - and watching him grow and change while still being himself over literal years has been a truly unparalleled experience as a reader 💖

Luke Wigglebig and Florette from Pajama Sam: You Are What You Eat From Your Head To Your Feet - I joked before about being the only person on the internet who ships them but like, I'm pretty sure that's actually true lol. Even just more fanart of them by themselves would make me happy, they're so cute!! Especially Luke, his design is adorable

#listen I think I have a right to experience A Lot of annoyance over all this because I had to see ‘criticisms’ like that so often #this is a particularly hilarious one the same level as the people complaining about Daisy and Billy being the only ones on the Aurora cover #(there are changes with the shoot but them being the only two on the cover is the same as in the book lmao ya’ll can not read apparently #‘it’s an insult to the message of the book because it’s supposed to be the whole band on the cover and not just the Billy and Daisy show uw #you are talking about the scene in the book where the entire band in interview is mad/bitter about how they ended up going with only DB #on the cover even years later while Daisy and Billy in their interviews gush over how gorgeous and iconic the cover featuring just them is #like … ya’ll are conflating a general sentiment those chars were allowed to express with what the actual scene was grrr #it’s one of the best funniest parts of the book too like I love that part… #and if the complaint was ‘I’m sad the other interviews weren’t as extensive at that part in the show’ totally would be valid crit to me #I would have liked them to show everyone reacting in interviews too (they did show them esp Eddie be unhappy about it but #your right there wasn’t as much specific exploration in the show of how the side chars were effected. you know i mostly really like my grad program and everything but i have very quickly learned not to ask too much about vision and hearing loss bc it turns out most of the faculty here know very little about those things. they know a little bit about hearing loss but really only in the sense of "get them fitted with hearing aids/CI as early as possible so they can develop like a hearing child". i really wanna learn more about language development in deaf, blind, and deafblind children because that's the population i specifically wanna work with (and have worked with in the past). and it's just been frustrating having my questions about those populations be met with "uh. i'm really not sure."

most of the faculty have been nice about it, but i have had the misfortune of being assigned an advisor who is borderline hostile about it. the first time i brought up this subject, (back through email when i was still deciding where to go), i was asking about an ASL elective that was offered within the program and whether there were any other electives with related topics. she responded by telling me that this was a masters program in speech language pathology, not ASL. great! you could've just said "no." the second time it came up was a few weeks ago when i talked to her about maybe doing a masters thesis (i won't be doing one, by the way). i said that if i were to do one, it would be about deafness, blindness, and/or deafblindness, and she said something like, "that's not a subject that's typically studied or taught in a CSD curriculum". as if it's just crazy that i as a CSD student would want to learn about something as esoteric as fucking vision and hearing loss! what a marvel!! not like those two senses have fucking anything to do with communication huh??? not like children who are deafblind face significant barriers in their development of language, the effects of which i have personally seen in numerous individuals??? clearly i'm really the crazy one here

Big fan of when stories provide no justification/explanation for why main characters have unique, insanely powerful abilities. The writer(s) really just said “Well of course they can do that, they’re my specialist little character. It makes perfect sense.” And they’re right

#okay i made this in a joke form because i do find it funny #but like i unoronically think this is a good writing technique #like. sometimes people are just uniquely special for no reason #people with perfect pitch #people who can do insanely complicated math in their head #i know someone who can perfectly cut a card deck in half or thirds just by feel #sometimes things just don’t need an explanation! #and having your main character have this special ability for no apparent reason #really makes it clear WHY they’re the main character #like of course they’re the main character. they’re the only one who can do that. who else could the story possibly be about? #and it allows them to be obviously the main character without any kind of prophecy or clear-cut chosen one #there are definitely some cases where this does not work #like it works when the world has magic but only the main character can do a specific kind of magic #but it doesn’t work if they’re the only one in the world who has any magic #like. if you’re not gonna provide any explanation it has to be within reason imo #anyway #i wrote this about echo from dollhouse lol #but obviously it works for a lot of other characters too #nimona is a good example of this

I believe a lot of fanfic writers would be massively disappointed if they were to try and publish their fanfics (having changed the most identifying characteristics to present it as original work). bc one of the reasons why we never say anything when someone's writing is full of spelling mistakes or bad grammar or, imo the most serious flaws - plots, characters, the low quality of the story itself, the themes, the subtext, the deeper meaning, etc - the reason, besides the whole participating in fandom communities and the fact it's free, is that we easily overlook some of those things because we get to read more about the characters we already love. I know my ff standards are fairly low. and who hasn't found themselves in a situation where they've read through everything they initially wanted to read and then started reading even the fics they first disregarded bc they can't get enough of their otp. do you know how many times I've scrolled past some especially cringy parts of fanfics, but I still love them. when you publish it, you immediately lose that aspect and most reviewers and readers won't be particularly generous. I just think publishing ff has a very high chance of being a mistake, and if publishing houses are approaching ff writers, I don't think they're looking for high quality and I wonder how much they'd invest in serious editing. IMO those who write ff and want to be published should consider working on an original piece of work, or at least reworking their ff significantly. thanks for reading through my message.

Again, I can't say I disagree at all. Fanfiction doesn't hold a grasp in all of those aspects you mentioned against actual published books [and of course nothing at all against the few of those books we would actually dare to call literature] and we allow it and are fine with it, not just because it's free and about the community and about the basic delight in sharing more of the characters we care about, but because none of those things are the primarily function of fanfiction. You don't judge Ikea and an apartment you're going to rent in the same mannar. Ikea isn't a house. At least to me, fanfiction is only about the source material. If there is a fic that has a well-thought out plot and decent prose, but the characters are mischaracterized and/or the dynamics are inherently misunderstood, then it still fails at being a good fic to me. Because, simply, if what I'm looking for is a good plot and decent prose, then I'll just pick any, even a mediocre, book [and it'll be better than said fic]. So not only does fanfiction fail by large at competing in those elements, in the average ratio of good to bad fics, it's also the fact that even a good fic that does all of those things decently still won't hold a chance against an actual good book.

It's the same from a writing's perspective too. It's not exactly about effort but what sort of effort it is. If I feel like it, I can just post a fic because I want it out without spending millenia editing it. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. But the point is, with fanfic I have the choice and it won't matter. And it's not just about the editing, the grammar, etc.

Anyway, yeah. They aren't looking for quality. It's still a capitalisic endeavor. Bad books, unfortunately, do sell. Fifty Shades of Grey made millions to an average fanfic writer. Doesn't make it a good book [and I doubt even a good fic before that]. And it's understandable with this current twitter and tiktok book market; honestly the things twitter authors write and tiktokers promote aren't at all that much better than fanfics. They are well aware of what makes them money, and if they're pursuing ao3 writers then they know the money they'll put in editing, they will get back tenfold. But if anyone thinks that's a win for fanfiction, they are mistaken. It's just an insane downgrade in published literature. And dare I say [while risking sounding like a Harold Bloom-like boomer] it's an insane downgrade in the generation/public's reading taste.

#so my characters are becoming EXTREMELY independent and i haven't even finished the first chapter yet #*sharpay voice* 'this is not what i planned' lol #kay specifically is just doing whatever the heck he wants #my original conception of his character was that he was very socially aloof and kind of deliberately cultivated the 'tragic artist' vibe #but currently he's turning out a bit like tom from the glass menagerie and he's trying to be an EXTROVERT. darling you're not an extrovert? #stop being so charming??? where did you get those social skills?? I DIDN'T GIVE YOU THOSE GET BACK HERE #meanwhile gerda is being quieter than i had anticipated BUT not uncomfortable around people #which i think i like for her #she's not necessarily a 'social butterfly' but she gets along with everyone and everyone knows her #she overall is very comfortable with her environment and with who she is #she's not quite a woman but has already begun to hollow out her #own little place in her community to make it a home #(the problem is she doesn't know who she is to everyone else and #what she means to them. and by 'everyone else' i mainly mean kay but he's not the only one #she wants to know how to be of value within her community and what exactly that means) #she knows who she is in her community but doesn't have a sense of who she is on her own #meanwhile kay is so uncomfortable with where he is and who he is. you look at him and you feel he might jump out of his own skin any #minute and shed it like a snake #he feels that the safe haven he's grown up in is confining him like a childhood bed you outgrow #and he's seen so many people leave for good and so many people close to him in abandoning him have apparently found something out there #that fulfills them and is more important than he was to them that he feels there MUST be something out there to fill the void inside him #that's eating him alive #he can see the beauty of his little world around him but he only as representative of the greater beauty that must lie beyond #am i saying abandonment breeds abandonment? i don't know? #and it's this point of tension that lies between them unspoken because how do you address something that integral to your being at that #age? how do you even articulate it? can you even make sense of it in your own head? #but the tension is there and they both feel it and it grows more tangible the older they get and IF ONLY I COULD TRANSLATE IT TO PAPER #anyway sorry feel free to ignore this just working out writing problems in the tags #val's ocs
