I know I'm supposed to be taking a break, but I just wanted everyone to know that Rafal started trolling me as a northern flicker. Every morning this literal shit bird pecks away at my chimney cap, sounding like a machine gun, so now I have to hire someone to install bird spikes (which don't harm birds, only deter them from landing) on it.

What if Rafal couldn't save Rhian in time? Like Vulcan successfully stabbed him with the pen before Rafal could prevent it?
The comedic answer is that I have one word for you: gibbeting.
That's the more "fun" answer, a form of medieval execution/torture, which was specifically intended to make an example of someone, publicly, to deter further criminal acts, and if Vulcan murdered Rhian, well, he deserves the worst death possible! And why not make it a creative one? However, I think, to an extent, that gibbeting could be too extreme, and that Rafal would recognize that if Rhian were alive, he'd view it as an eyesore, tasteless, or simply too brutal, so it's probably unlikely to happen. But, Rafal might not be above it, considering that the Doom Room exists, so it could go either way, potentially.
Plus, there's some added, bonus "fun" here, in how a certain canon moment would come full circle. Vulcan put Rafal in a birdcage (while he was a black sparrow), and now, Rafal would get the pleasure of hanging Vulcan (or rather, his slowly dying and later, decomposing body) up in a cage, a pretty neat form of revenge, if I do say so myself, haha! Besides, Vulcan was a bit exhibitionistic, wasn't he? So, this would also make for an ironical fate.
Now for the serious answer. I hope you don't mind it if I get a little more subjective/personal with this one at some point. It's not quite as much an overblown, narrative-style post, and may be more understated than usual.
I took this "what if" ask to essentially mean: how would Rafal react to Rhian's death and how would he mourn Rhian over time? If I misinterpreted your ask, and this wasn't the kind of response you were expecting, please let me know. Also, everything is speculative, of course, so take my interpretations with a grain of salt. I'm open to hearing other opinions!
I think Rafal's immediate, knee-jerk reaction would probably be to murder Vulcan as revenge, but also it would serve the more practical reason of disposing of the tyrant usurper, ousting him from the School permanently. However, I don't think Rafal would find catharsis in it, not this time at least, considering why he is doing it.
He'd have to act on his feet, and quickly, because, Vulcan would still pose a threat to his own life, which would force Rafal to delay any kind of visceral, emotional reaction.
That is why I think the murder would be done instantaneously because speed is more important, and so is getting the task done right. And, having Vulcan dead sooner for everyone's safety is more important than the potential brutality of any kind of gruesome catharsis Rafal could derive from the act. That's why I think Rafal would go about performing this particular murder in a less sadistic fashion, for once, like how Vulcan died in canon by a stab wound, versus the time when Rafal turned Rufius to gold and shattered him, or did worse to others, generally. If Vulcan had simply been a foe who was already incapacitated, that could've given Rafal the opportunity to go for a worse form of murder, but Vulcan isn't harmless.
Thus, employing a "kinder" form of murder in this instance wouldn't be out of sympathy for Vulcan, but more so, to fulfill an urgent need. And, in some sense, the act of murder would be done out of a kind of duty to Rhian, for Rhian's sake and nothing more. I think Rafal deriving pleasure/catharsis out of this murder could possibly be a bit of a slight to Rhian's memory because this is somber business.
Then, after that adrenaline or rage-fueled clarity and the action taken, I think Rafal would next probably feel some kind of uncomprehending fog next because Rhian was suddenly ripped away from him with little warning. His supposedly immortal brother, who was supposed to be with him forever, just died. To an extent, that has to feel surreal.
The surreal feeling could start out as a detached, dissociated feeling, like the kind of out-of-body experience where you're like a third-person observer, (probably a similar feeling as a panic attack?) Like, what? What has my life become? Rhian is suddenly gone, for good.
(The revelation of Rhian's death being real could also prompt a lot of thought as to why their bond wasn't able to save or revive Rhian, and could evoke guilt.)
Once Rafal processes the implications of Rhian's death, his initial outburst could be the most, actual, unbridled emotion he lets out, at all, if ever—maybe, one raw, primal scream of agony into the ether and that’s it. (Yet, I'm also tempted to say, that's too dramatic of a reaction, even for him. As interesting as it is to go to extremes in other cases, I'm attempting to go for something closer to realism here, so bear with me.)
While there is probably a narrow chance, that under the exact, right conditions, he could be driven insane or become an extremist in some way, out of guilt or by how ridiculously unjust the whole situation would be, I think it's a little more plausible that Rafal would just bury himself in his work. He could devote his life to Evil, and still keep it in balance with Good, without Rhian there to keep him in check, even if he was more often the one to keep Rhian in check, from what we saw. (He could also become disillusioned with the world and the Pen.)
Given how I view Rafal, I think he would shut down emotionally but not functionally. He wouldn't let himself dwell on the grief for long, and he might even (irrationally) resent Rhian for dying, at first, on the surface, because he's now got twice the work. And yet, the work would be a welcome distraction from his actual grief.
Additionally, I think Rafal would become numb and immune to all emotional appeals from other people. Not even a trick like Hook reminding him of Rhian would work to convince him to change his mind that he's already made up in any future instance. He's never, never investing himself in the fate of another person again. Not when he could lose them. He just... does his job. Someone has to do it after all.
That said, I think his paranoia level would absolutely skyrocket, too, as a result of the whole Vulcan incident, and that he'd isolate himself more than he already did before.
Now comes the part where this may or may not take a weird turn, and I could be projecting with what I'm about to say, but I think I have actual reason to apply it to Rafal, purely out of thinking it could make sense for him, (as just one of the many possible ways he could take Rhian's death. Again, this is all just my speculation. I could easily be wrong, so keep that in mind.)
Ok, I'm not sure if this is a common or a weird thing to think and I had a feeling it could be controversial. Thus, I'm going to preface it with this: my intention is not to sound callous, but...
I (usually) do not miss people when they are gone. (Death is different from just absence though.)
I doubt that I "miss" people in what is the typical way, from what I have heard from others? Though, I have an explanation. Obviously, it depends, but missing others doesn't occupy my every waking thought. (And thoughts about fictional characters are a different type of thought to arise.)
I feel others' presence when they’re around, and when they’re not around, unless I'm concerned for them, I don’t exactly think about them. It's kind of "out of sight, out of mind," except for the cases in which I actually am holding something to say to them in mind for our next encounter.
I’m sorry if this is strange, but I think that’s how I operate most of the time. I don't "wait around" for people to return because I always have some thing to occupy myself with. Can anyone relate?
I suspect that the reason why is because, to me, missing someone is what I would classify as an active feeling. When someone I love is apart from me, I'm usually busy, regardless of whether they're present or not (that doesn't change), and I know that when you're busy, you don't have the time to feel, at least not active emotions. They just... don't occur to you? Or maybe they are not conscious?
Now, from my view of things, if something you feel becomes a problem, and interferes with your daily functioning or general contentment with everyday life, that could very well surface as a real reaction or outburst. But, that's an entirely different matter. I also think that I am reminded of people at times, but that I usually don't "miss" them without there being some kind of (internal or external) stimuli that causes me to think about them.
Maybe, I'm just projecting onto Rafal too much because I relate to him over other characters, and this is silly, or junk psychoanalysis, but it seemed to fit his character also???
Sometimes, I just want recognition more than I want actual companionship since I don't get lonely. I wonder what that says about me? That I'm an introvert, or lazy because relationships require regular maintenance to sustain them? I promise I'm not a misanthrope!
Ok, back to Rafal. He's sunken himself into his work and as such, he wouldn't actively miss Rhian. (If anyone would like more clarification, I'm not saying he wouldn't grieve Rhian at all. It's not that.)
And, if we're going down a more realistic than dramatic route, he wouldn’t lose his sense of self, or his mind over Rhian. Yes, not even Rhian. I think the only thing keeping him running and tethered to his life would be his commitment to the School/keeping himself alive.
What this makes me think of is how people romanticize grief or unrequited love, how they may end up looking wan and eventually wasting away (well, if we're talking about being heartsick in literary/symbolic contexts...). And, I just don't think Rafal would be the type of person to fall into some kind of "madness" or melancholic malady. Grief just wouldn’t be so debilitating or all-consuming to him because he wouldn’t let it do that to him. He wouldn’t stop eating or sleeping as I would expect these behaviors more from someone like Rhian, not him.
Similarly, he might not indulge in pleasurable things, but he’s a bit of an ascetic already anyway, so that’s that. He could potentially renounce pleasurable things in life out of mourning, in a traditional way, but I doubt that would happen either, to be honest. It probably wouldn't cross his mind. At least, it wouldn't happen on a formal, conscious level, even if he could very well deprive himself without realizing it.
I just don't think Rafal would be engulfed by grief, simply because he isn’t that much of an emotionally driven person or that vulnerable to being swept up by personal tragedy, when compared to Rhian, who's more "wild." He’d only let his grief manifest so far, assuming his emotions do still remained locked down and under his control.
So, while he may think about Rhian regularly, he might just accept the fact of Rhian's death, carry on, and not miss him because Rafal missing Rhian could (implicitly) mean becoming non-functional due to grief (or guilt) and that would be too great of a risk for Rafal to take, considering his current reality alone. Basically, to let himself wallow in those emotions would be an unnecessary "risk," from his viewpoint. That's why he might repress that reflective type of thought.
Such feelings would be too much mess or potential disorder for someone like him, especially if he realized he couldn't keep them contained, and they, as a consequence, actually jeopardized his fate or the School's, assuming the grief made him unable to perform his job properly.
(He'd probably subtly resent the Storian as well, for not preserving Rhian's life.)
Also, one small point: in canon, was his bond with Rhian really, truly all-consuming? Let's stop and ask ourselves that for a moment.
Yes, for a time, their bond may have seemed like it was priority no. 1, but Rafal was apart from Rhian for six months, and might not have consciously missed him, if it took him that long to return after getting an external reminder from his interactions with Hook. It might have taken something outside of himself (like the prophecy) for him to come to the realization that he had to return and reestablish his loyalty to Rhian (which was arguably never gone, just dormant for a while). And this would mean that if left alone to his own devices, had he never been moved by James, or "awakened" and been made aware by Adela Sader, he could have taken longer than even six months to return... if he ever decided to at all, if the thought ever arose in the first place.
So, overall, it would only be rarely, when he has nothing to occupy himself with, that Rafal would grieve in some quiet way, and over time, the grief would fade. It wouldn't leave him entirely, but it would diminish, I think, the more and more he distances himself from everything else.
Also, in canon, I suspect that he lies to himself about how much he cares for Rhian. He never shows Rhian much affection, but he sacrifices his life for him, on instinct, which probably means a grieving Rafal would also lie to himself about how “little” he mourns Rhian. In reality, he’d probably mourn Rhian a great deal more than he could know, but wouldn’t have enough self-awareness to realize it.
Perhaps, at night, he would be haunted by Rhian's memory, and take on Rhian's insomniac trait on occasion. Also, to credit @cursed-daydreamer, I think it would be plausible for Rafal to take on a few of Rhian's traits, unconsciously, to compensate for the loss, and fill his void; it could be a way of keeping Rhian's presence in his life.
Lastly, I doubt that Rafal would publicly erect monuments or dedicate anything to Rhian. He wouldn’t want a painful, visual reminder around. His rituals, if we were to call them that, any form of remembrance, I mean, would likely be private, away from prying eyes and students. Rafal wouldn't want to come across as weak or sentimental. That’s the last thing he needs at the moment, a ruined reputation, another so-called threat to his own life/power. Because, increased paranoia could lead him to believe that if he were to show any sign of vulnerability, more "Vulcans" could prey on him and the School.
He could maintain the cherry blossom trees though, but it'd always be a sobering occasion, and he'd never take the credit.
Besides that, he probably wouldn’t go eulogizing his brother or canonizing him. He can still recognize Rhian's flaws, and to praise Rhian so completely would be "too much," too public, and the performative (or contrived) nature of certain mourning customs like those would probably strike him as "wrong" because they just seem... insincere. I don't think Nevers (if we're assuming Rafal remains Evil) put as much much stock in praise anyway, according to their value system.
The exception to the rule would probably be if he recognized that it would be Rhian's wish, to receive some recognition or a dedication. Then, he would do it, out of reverence, I think. He'd have reason to "excuse" it (Rhian's dying wishes), unlike visible emotions, which don't have an excuse to be felt.
Also, I was wondering: does anyone agree or disagree? I'm really curious because this ask provoked a train of thought I'd never considered before!

I am sorry but everything that fans of the book have said about the book make it sound like the movie was actually better on every way.
"Sophie was bad from the start, she is too nice in the movie." Yeah, because otherwise nobody would give a fuck about her friendship with Agatha or understand why Agatha wants to be her friend at all.
"Tedros and Agatha hated a lot more in the books. Tedros even made a doll to look like Agatha and abused it in front of her." Death threats. You are telling me this guy that carries a weapon at all times was abusing a doll meant to represent Agatha in front of her, so she would know that he was capable of doing that, and that was to set up how good it was going to be when they do fall in love with each other. Not saying that the books couldn't make it work because I don't know, but a two hour movie with already a lot going on I don't think could have added that and keep Tedros as a sympathetic character at all. Because WOW, that is some fucking dickish thing to do to someone who carries no weapon and you do. Fuck that.
"This character whose main power is to turn things into sweets and eat it was supposed to be fat!" A character whose entire power relies on sweets that they later eat is not a fat stereotype? What a fucking tragedy. We truly lost something by not having a character with sugar powers to be fat on a movie where we already had another bunch of fat characters, many of them POC. A tragedy I tell you.
"Rafal didn't had to appear at all." Except that according to the narrative his presence makes the plot make sense while keeping it short.
"The other princesses are supposed to be good, not bullies." The point is that Agatha still feels isolated and makes sense for the audience her attachment to Sophie.
Like, again, haven't read the books, probably never will, so maybe I am missing some masterpiece that is full of nuance and complexities... but the movie was fine. It had a clear idea of what they wanted to do and did it. If that wasn't the same thing the books wanted to do, then fine, they are different, but doesn't make it bad either.

*sigh*
Ok this is going to be the final post I ever make on this issue
Again, in canon both Nel and Rafal aren't Alear's half siblings.
They both come from a dimension where Alear isn't their father's child hence why in the S support they'll mention that fact, because that's what makes them unrelated to Alear.
"But Alear still has Sombron's blood!!!" So ? How is it gonna change the fact that in canon they come from a world where Alear has not Sombron's blood and Rafal having this one line in his S support with Alear ? The writing has already been done, finished approve no matter what arguments you can pull off your pocket so you're probably better off accepting it
"But Sombron has the same DNA, he looks identical" THAT THE LOOK ALIKE LOOKS LIKE SOMBRON IS NOT AN EVIDENCE OF HAVING THE SAME DNA !! Besides Nel straight up explains at the begining of the DLC her Sombron was native to his Elyos and hence had different ancestor so even if you try to replicate irl to a fictional scenario that wouldn't work
"But in X or Y media multiverse is written like this so logically it should" No, I'll stop you right here. Multiverse as a concept is entirely fictional. I wathced long ago a video made by a scientist explaining that the spacio-temporal rules of the universe were so precise that it was literaly impossible for an alternate version of yourself to even exist. Do you realize how many % of chances you had to even be born the way you are ? That somehow your parents would happen to meet in another world and have you in another world and that you would look exactly like you do is close to 0. Any writers is free to wrote about multiverse with all the rules and any rules that they please and I'd have problem to see you say "but it's not like that irl" since it doesn't exist in real life, we have no idea how many chances there is to have indeed a dimension where everything is absolutely identical.
So basically you are arguing despite the canon that this ship might be potentially immoral because even if multiverse doesn't exist because what if the writers are wrong about the own story they wrote because we should ask ourselves if in another world bloodrelationship are kept and DNA doesn't change ? Please find real problems
"But Nel and Veyle become siblings in her support so Alear-" That Veyle choosed to bond as a sister with a fell dragon who hail from a world where Veyle is her sibling because in this world Sombron is still her father is Veyle's decision, it doesn't concern either Rafal or Alear, if they want to bond this way with Nel and Veyle, then it should be their own decision
"But don't you think this is convoluted as all heck ?" Yes it is. But at the end of the day it's what the writers wrote. No one can change that except them
"But if you have to go through all that trouble to make it ok, then that's-" Again, that's nothing. All of what happened is just the consequence of the writers writing what they needed : they nedded Nel and Rafal to be the child of the Sombron of their world to have him serves as a catalyst for their story but didn't needed to have them being siblings to Alear so they made sure that Alear in their world is Lumera's child. Like you really though that this one change, Nel being in love with Alear and the PR being romantic wasn't done on purpose ? You really didn't connected the dots ?
"But no one would complain had they given the Fell twins a different parent!!" Oh I sure don't doubt that but again, considering what the canon says, would it have made that much of a difference ? Besides you can still ship them with the Blue Alear if it bugs you so much to have them being shipped with the regular one. It's essentially shipping the same ship since it's involving the same characters and that if you put Alear in Emblem mode next to Isekai Alear they have the same hair and eye color and it's the essential reason why the twins being romance exist but hey, if it helps you feel better (but if you ask me if you can ship them with a least one version of Alear without it carrying the uneasyness you are feeling that shows how much of a nothing problem that is)
"But it's not a good look when you have to explain why shipping 2 characters isn't ince-" Look, anyone who has been in a fandom will tell you that's the one argument that is easily disproven by people so into their headcanon that they project it into canon and that's not even entering into cultural differences and sues
"But it makes me unconfortable, I prefer to headcanon them as siblings" Which is perfectly valid and understable, you have every right to be weirded out by it and to not like shipping them but prefering a family headcanon, provided of course that you don't try to police people on those ships since... the creator of the characters themselves are fine with this ship happening in canon
"But the fact they let you marry your multi-cross-dimensional sibling is wil-" Again, multiverse doesn't exist so we have literaly no idea id we can have cross dimensional sibling to begin with, we are bond to the text that says they aren't in virtue of Alear changing parents across dimension
"But there would have been so much more potential if they became siblings in canon instead " that's more your wish on the story then anything, because Alear hates Sombron and feel no kinship to him so why would they towards another Sombron whom they never met and isn't even their father in that world ? And Nel and Rafal both comming from a world where Alear isn't their sibling I don't see them feeling kinship suddenly because in this world they are a Fell dragon too since they also hate their own Sombron. Veyle is a special case in case you havent noticed... being their siblings in their world and having a connection with Alear's that actullay relevant to the main story... and being called Alear's only sister in the JPN version.
"But all of this is only so that you the player can marry them" So ?Not only is that untrue since Alear being a Divine dragon by blood in their world wasn't linked to the S support future, but that also means they have even less chance of being related because why on earth would you have the player marry their sister ? You can't even do it with VEYLE. I think that Veyle not being concerned should already speak volume to that
At the end of the day we are talking about fictional characters (aka stuff that don't exist and don't have blood nor DNA so aren't related in any other place then your imagination) that can be romanced in canon sayin that they aren't related to Alear in canon and that can still be shipped with the other version of Alear who is identical in apperance and personality any way. I think by that point it shows that fighting over this is useless.

Honestly, Griss was just a little upset when he'd heard there was a group embarking for Valentia, and that Celly would've probably been there too (if she was a princess - or a queen - like she was supposed to be), but he was more upset that Rafal was going instead, without him.
"All by your lonesome, huh?" Griss says in lieu of a greeting, sauntering over to the dragon with a lopsided smile and the edge of a knife tucked between his words. The port is far warmer than Garreg Mach had been these past couple of months, and the clear sky has him in a good mood despite the circumstances. He stops to lean back with his elbows against the railing overlooking the docks.
"Bet you like it that way though." He looks directly at Rafal. "Nothing out there a fell dragon's gotta be worried about, yeah? Especially not you." A beat passes. Griss finally breaks away with a nod toward one of the ships. "Lucky for me, I'm with your sis."
Another beat. The passengers begin to board, so Griss pushes off from the rail. Then adds as an afterthought:
"I dunno if you got any Emblems from Valentia where you're from, but its princess ain't a pushover either."
Of all the creatures that Rafal could ward off with his terrifying presence alone, he lamented that the seaside gnats weren't one of them. It was hot. With their incessant buzzing and biting and targeting even more so. Rafal when Griss found him was waving a hand to deter the stubborn pests from sucking his blood, and upon his notice of the other, stilled his movements. For the most part.
"You've the right idea and you would do well to remember it. I am a powerful Fell Dragon—threatened by nothing and no-one." Smack! Hand to neck, when his palm lifted a dark gnat fizzled sadly to the ground. He pestled it beneath his heel for good measure and then crossed his arms proudly:
". . .Powerful. And used to solitude."
A thousand years of it in fact. To someone who once wore his solitude like a second snakeskin, this was nothing- or rather, it should have been nothing. He followed the nod to the ship, as if he hadn't been staring after it this entire time; gazing into the distance at a towering galleon aimed toward Elibe, envisioning the tall black-haired woman somewhere on deck with ruby eyes near identical to his own. 'Nothing'? With a long separation from Nel on the horizon, Rafal hesitated to call it that.
He quieted. Not quite sad, not quite brooding, but uncharacteristic all the same, he allowed the silence to simmer between them for a moment, until a motion from the other man captured his attention. Back to his usual colors he went, thorny and smirking. "How kind your words for a friend. Or perhaps it is a warning? Either way, I've no need for such things. Whatever concern you intend to wield should be aimed toward yourself."
The commotion on the gangplank a begotten cue to leave, his hands buried into his pockets on the cool turn of his heel, away from Griss. Rafal always left conversations on his own terms- broken off bonds on his own terms- but this time was a little different. It was easier to make a request when his eyes didn't show their sincerity. "Return alive and ensure you are not the only one, Griss," he said without looking back, trusting that the meaning would be clear.
Watch out for my sister. I'm counting on you.

It is because in Nel and Nil's universe Alear is not a fell dragon, but a divine one. They are Lumera's bilogical child in this universe as implied by Alear support with the Four Winds, Nel and Nil. Nel in her support with Veyle explain that her Sombron is not Veyl's father therfore they are not siblings and that her Sombron is a different person. Their Sombron had children by pair of twins while our Sombron had kids without this peculiarity. In short, they want to make it crystal clear that Alear is not related to the twins because they don't have the same father albeit being both Sombron.
I am pretty sure that in their universe, Alear is not Sombron's child while both the twins were not OUR sombron's kids because they were not born or simply did not exist. either way, this is giving me a headache but the idea is that their are fell child but not related ?? like they are just part of the same species or some shit ?
That must be why somehow in their universe Alear is a divine dragon and not a fell one. But by the time you can S support them, you apparently got rid of all your fell blood by becoming an emblem and in both universe you are not related even if their are the kid of Alt!Sombron... wow this is really a headscratchers....
"but you could absolutely play it that way if you were so inclined." what do you mean ?
Wow, four anons about this already.
My point is not that there isn't a non-incestuous explanation, because regardless of any ambiguity that would be covered by the playable Alear and Nel being from different dimensions. My point is that if you need such a complicated explanation to justify why Alear/Nel isn't technically incest, it's probably worth stepping back and thinking about why the writers would construct such a scenario in the first place. It's quite similar to Rhealeth in that regard; Rhea is not, biologically speaking, related to Byleth - but you could also squint a bit at the convoluted circumstances of Byleth's birth and call Rhea their mother, father, grandmother, and daughter simultaneously. What's the point of coming up with something like that? It doesn't even work as shock value like the Lachesis archetype because the game never actually says it out loud. I can only conclude that it's meant to appeal to players with a fetish for that kind of thing. Engage already has a number of Pact Ring options with racy implications regardless of how much the localization may have tried to obscure them, but even though I haven't seen any of Nel or Rafal's supports yet I'm confident in guessing that their Alear supports lean more in that direction than Alear/Veyle does. The game as such has three separate flavors of sibling romance - provided you want to read it that way.
I do however have to include the disclaimer here that I'm not attempting to shame anyone who ships their Avatars with the Fates Royals, Rhea, or the other Engage dragons. I'm aware that purity culture types can sometimes make the same point: that if you justify shipping something "nasty" with a technicality, like that two characters aren't biologically related or that age of consent is not universally 18, then you're just as much of a degenerate pervert and deserve to be shamed for it. I'm just pointing out that IS has done this before, and it continues to be amusing. I think that after Fates went really in on the pseudo-incest angle they didn't really have any way to top themselves without getting into absurd, dragon-blood-and-alternate-dimensions territory. With the partial exception of Tellius, nothing in FE has ever come close to tickling any of my personal kinks. I thus have no personal stakes here - but in my professional life I've learned that it's better to be non-judgmental about kinks, even the uncommon ones.

SFGE Headcanons
Royals are trained in politics and self-defense from the moment they can talk since there is a high probability they will end up as orphans in their fairy tale.
There are some parents who don't get close to their children until AFTER they have graduated, since there is a chance they could end up as a plant or die in their fairy tale. This is way more common in Evil, where Good's winning streak left a lot of broken Evil families behind (either your child died young or your parent died as the finale of a fairy tale).
In a way, Rafal's intervention in the Tale saved Sophie's life, since she would have ended up dead once they graduated and she became the villain of Agatha's story. But since you can't intervene in a fairy tale's course without suffering the consequences, the Storian went "a life for a life" and killed Rafal. Suck it, old man.
While at Good they have an equal number of male and female students (because of the One True Love thing), at Evil two thirds of the students are girls. This would explain why they have three towers for all their students instead of four like Good. Gotta keep up with the witch demand 😂
Nah, but an in-universe reason could be that magic is easier for females than males. This would also be why we see girls using it the most in the books while boys rely on their swords or talents.
After the Tale of Sophie and Agatha they stop trying to match up people at Good and simply admit them according to the goodness of their souls instead of trying to have an equal number of girls and boys.

Ohh! You might be right about Wednesday wearing dark blue in Fam Values but I swear I can only recall her bathing suit, one Morticia dress and Debbie's fits at the moment haha. I'm gonna probably rewatch both movies before Halloween though. Wbu? Are u planning any spooky movie marathon maybe? Also oof I'm so sorry abt your experience with the school for g00d and and evil. I haven't seen it.. yet(?).. but I read the book ages ago and um yeah. 😐😑😒
GOSH THANK U SO MUCH for posting your draft, you made my night!! Like I'm sitting here with a huge, dumb smile on my face cause it's so sweet and wholesome! Enid knew she was gonna miss Wednesday even before parting for the summer so she gave her her number but didn't have much hope she would even keep it. But Wednesday did keep it and bought a phone so just she could text her because she missed her too! OH BE STILL MY HEART 😳 That's also what Enid must have told herself after receiving that msg and realizing that ''Wednesday Addams actually missed me'' 😳
That bit about Enid thinking of Wesnesday and her smile? I SWOONED
And how Wednesday keeps making HER smile effortlessly with just being her weird as shit gothic ass self? The one Enid grew to LO- LIKE so much? OH MY HEART
This is such a fantastic draft you have here and I'm so grateful and honored you shared it with us. 💛 I'm no way asking or bugging you to finish it before the show drops cause I understand you prefer to post canon compliant content. All I'm gonna say is if inspiration strikes and you find your head full of ideas for this fic don't let anything stop you from writing it. You're genuinely amazing in expressing yourself in both writing and drawing so sometimes you can have a little non-canon stuff too as a treat 😄 I for one am gonna love love love it either way among many others. Of course it's up to you and only you, like I said I understood your reasoning perfectly. It's just.. this is waaaay to good to be scrapped. Really. Alright I will shut up now. Thanks again 💛
Ah not really. Whatever time i have when im not working, id rather spend drawing either for fun or my commissions. Although i do love creepy and macabre stuff, im not a big fan of horror movies. A lot of them are more about either shocking viewers and being as gorey and torture porn-y as possible, which isn't really my thing. Tho there are some horror movies out there i quite liked, I prefer to watch compilation videos of ghosts caught on camera and stuff if im in the mood for something spooky.
The SGE movie's pretty good for someone like me who hasn't read the books. My brother and I actually had tons of fun until all the confusing qb(and the whole thing with Rafal and Sophie. Barf). Like, if the filmmakers knew Agatha and Sophie were sisters then why have them kiss on the lips?? Unless they plan on retconning that since i hear that was only revealed at a later book...
Omg thank you! Ive mentioned it before but I'm not as confident with my writing as i am with my art, so compliments regarding my fics are always super appreciated. I'll consider continuing to write it, if there's still more i can squeeze out of me.

"As for Sombron not recognizing the twins, I just assumed that Sombron had so many children he couldn’t keep track of them all (I’d say this is supported by how blasé he was with killing them in the OG game) OR not all of his children in the regular world have a 1:1 alt world counterpart" I'd kind of agree but in the twins' worl it is shown that they grew up and that XenoSombron knew them. Nel, Rafal and Nil. While in the main game, in the jpn version, when Nel fight sombro she just assume that her alt self is dead "" The me of this world, is she.. it would be naive to ask, it's obvious she is no longer alive". Howvever, Nel's support with Veyle is based on Veyle asking Nel if she is SOmrbon's daughteer, implying Veyle never met her alternate self of this world which is bizarre because Nel seems to be older and that Past Alear's dialogue seems to indicate that Alear and Veyle met all their siblings. Even in Nel's world, she only knew of Veyle thanks to Mauvier. Sombron being ok with killing kids doesn't really matter in this equation since in the Alt!world, he did encourage and praised Nel for killing some of her siblings because they insulted Nil/Rafal, but her doing just made me though that in the OG world, Veyle and Alear were only fearing the Corrupted, they never taked about rivalry while in the alt world, Nel says that some of Sombron's killed, who were more numerous due to the "each fell child is born by pair of twins" thing, even ended up killing and plotting against each other out of rivalry. I don't know if the developper just wanted to make it ambiguous whether Rafal Nel and therir twins had also dopplengagner in the reg world or if they just did not thought about it, but I am leanin towards the second anwer.
I just mean him being blasé about killing them indicates that he probably had way more kids than we see, otherwise killing so many of them would probably leave him without a lot of pawns. We see when he only has Veyle that he goes to greater lengths to keep her alive than is previously implied by past!Alear
And I can’t point to a specific place, but I was under the impression that Veyle actually hadn’t met many of her siblings since she was so young when they all died. We know she and Alear must have met but I don’t recall much indication that Veyle met too many others.
Nel also mentions that they didn’t know all of their siblings either so I don’t think it’s out of the question that Alear and Veyle could be ignorant to any additional siblings

If a drunk Rafal is a party animal, then what would a drunk Rhian be like? Clingy? More delusional than ever? Or would he be an angry drunk, finally releasing his "Dragon Fire" anger?
I usually imagine drunk Rhian laughing a lot and getting a bit touchy-feely, but he could probably get moody at times! I guess it would depend. In Rise, he does swig some wine after the last contender for the position of dean leaves. He's frustrated at that point, unable to find someone who can give him that fresh spark he's been craving. Obviously, he doesn't get drunk in either book, but if there were a drunk scene, he might've released his dragon fire while intoxicated.
Would've been funny if he accidentally killed Hook that way.
Sorry this took so long to answer!

Childhood Headcanons
These particular, sort of apocryphal headcanons (depends on who believes what after all) provide further context for the brothers' childhood under the constraints of my canon-divergent fic, "When Lightning Falls," that was proved wrong by canon after the release of Fall.
There's also an accompanying Creation Theory I made up, to provide context for the fic, which becomes especially relevant here.
And, if anyone's wondering, this post has been around for far too long—I just never posted it some while after the fic itself was done. I have a lot of stuff on backlog anyway, and figured I may as well edit and post this.
Note:
Most of these thoughts focus on Rafal, and there is a slightly dark undercurrent that runs throughout this post.
First, the brothers were originally foundlings, like in the fairy tales of yore.
Fittingly, they have been the youngest and the oldest beings ever to live at the School, at different points in time.
At first, they led a deathly existence, an insecure, unstable one, with potential death at every turn.
Rafal became used to death threats, and being called "demon spawn." He hardened in response. Ever townspeople tried to ward him off, but their feeble sigils did no good, did no true harm against him and his latent sorcery, even whilst he was still learning magic.
They were found, possibly, doddering around in the Woods, on the outskirts of the School, at somewhere from three to five years old? So, they conveniently have little to no memory of their existence beforehand, as vagrants, outcasts, rejects, waifs, who knows—they were alone in the world.
The twins crashed through the brambles, clothes torn, faces scratched, scrapes on their limbs, drenched by the rain, just... waiting to be taken in like strays, as if they simply... appeared.
Rhian trailed after Rafal who forged a path ahead, until they emerged in the light of a clearing, as if guided by the hand of fate, to the School for Good and Evil.
Shortly after their discovery, they became the youngest students to ever attend the school.
Of course, taking them in was the Good thing to do, but perhaps, if we let conspiracy run rampant, the Storian had a hand in the proceedings.
Oddly enough, the Pen just might have brainwashed all the faculty to come to the unanimous agreement of raising the brothers as their own, among the lot of them. How odd that they agreed for once, the one time in decades that Good and Evil have agreed on any matter.
It was probably done for the greater fate of the Woods, the way they were all swayed by the Storian, nearly unconsciously.
And so, they came to terms with the new status quo because there seemed to be something behind this decision of the Pen's, that was greater than they could ever know, or so they believed.
They accepted it. They didn't question it because it was so obviously the Storian's doing. Controlling their minds that had already been made for them. No chance to decide for themselves.
But, they let the Storian handle it, handed over all control to the Storian. Because, no one, not even the highest ranking sorcerer or fairy godmother of either School, or lord or lady could have taken issue with what the Storian did. No one went against it. No one could. Contradicting it would have been a death wish just waiting to happen.
And they all knew that. They knew that very well, considering the nature of the tales they taught.
Eventually, they came to the common conclusion that these children must have been their future School Masters.
Thus, they took the Storian's apparent decision to heart because it wasn't their place to step in.
No one could overrule the Pen, so they lived with it, and continued to train the mysterious, foundling brothers—while they worried for their lives and all that was to come.
That particular set of faculty became a little like the brothers' parents, until they died off, one by one, each from old age or the occupational hazards of working at such a School.
Their professional lives were demanding and they didn't pay as much attention to the brothers as they should have.
All they could do was follow through and hope the Pen had charted the right course, that it chose well in the end.
Even if they would never live to see the future, they were aware they had played a monumental role in securing safety and balance for the Woods, by acting as these children's first, human influences.
"When Lightning Falls" takes place around three years after the brothers' arrival, when they're about seven, so they've had time to have grown used to the schools.
Everything has become a bit mundane to them. There's nothing new because it's all they've ever known and grown up with, unlike the incoming students' experience of the manor every four years.
So, they've never been around peers their own age, which led to Rhian feeling special and becoming fragile with no challengers and to Rafal gaining a massive superiority complex.
During those years is when Rafal starts on his skepticism, early in life.
Rafal starts to question the Pen, and ask why of everything and everyone that can possibly answer him, or that would answer him if he persisted and probed enough, and didn't relent. And he threatens his way to the answers, to get his way, to figure out what makes everything in this world of theirs tick.
It's the only way he knows, to bribe or exchange, even unethically, or to beat and to hassle information out of others, to trap them in their own bedchambers or offices and not release them until they answered him or fulfilled his demands.
He learned the word "leverage" early on, and the Evil faculty thought he was a prodigy.
He doesn't know any other way because the Never faculty took him in first, claimed him as one of their own. They took a liking to him and his silence, over his crybaby brother.
Predictably, the Never faculty were rough around the edges and they never showed displays of pleading and begging, so Rafal never did that, even as a child.
He never learned the art of apologizing either. Everyone was remiss to let that pass by... but it was too late.
He refused to resort to such means as begging, to lower himself in that way, like Rhian would, even at such a young age, because he wasn't taught mercy. He was told kindness was a weakness and that justice was right. And so, even as a young child, he maintained an adult-like level of dignity in how he conducted himself, always.
Meanwhile, he'd look on at his brother, and wonder: why is he acting so childishly? Having Evil imposed on him forced Rafal to grow up sooner, before his time.
Evil taught him never to whine and whinge, to never cry to get his way. He could already get his way, by other, more sinister means. Cleverer, more artful, more guileful means besides, and in doing so, he could still feel superior, boosting his ego, inflating it and inflating it as a result.
So, that was what he'd grown up around. It was the natural way of things, to him.
At least, this is how children ought to be treated in his eyes, simple as that. And he turned out fine, didn't he? Of course he did. No question about it. He's him, and he's great. The best. Superior to all others, everyone else in his school.
He probably considered himself the smartest little boy alive, not necessarily the most knowledgeable, but the most clever or capable of outwitting others, of negotiating deals, and plotting schemes and doing other, crooked deeds. He thought himself smart in that artful sense, skilled to the point that he could outfox adults over twice his age, outdoing the teenage students in everything he did.
Oh, and if certain knowledge were established as forbidden? Rafal would still try all the more diligently to go after it. That's how he contended with all things.
And what of Rhian? To Rafal, Rhian was naive. Secretly, Rafal never considered Rhian his match. No way, no how. That brother of his couldn't tell Good from Evil in the simplest of challenges.
The Evil faculty were decently well-meaning, thinking Rafal would be good villain material, but again, they weren't exactly attentive or warm or caring like Good's faculty was in "parenting" Rhian.
They weren't neglectful either, but still, Rafal was left to his own devices outside of lessons, and he grew accustomed to being alone when Rhian wasn't around to play with him. Not that he really played that frequently.
Thus, time passed, and the staff believed the twins to be foundlings. That they were adopted, taken in under their wings. Children of the School.
In reality, the twins were children of the Storian.
Everyone knowingly buys into the lie because they didn't want to think beyond the present. They wanted to believe the brothers were of woman-born, abandoned, and insignificant. But, the truth could only be delayed, not buried.
The brothers are foundlings, they all said, persistently. That's what most of the faculty believed, and that's what the brothers were led to think.
Yet, a select few knew their actual purpose of existence: the brothers were not being trained up to follow the Rules of fairy tales themselves—they were being trained up to rule. (Or rather, "rule" as figureheads for the greater Pen.)
They were bound to the School grounds, and only a few people, none in living memory, knew they belonged to the Storian...
Any thoughts anyone?

Original twins headcanons
I'm finally making this after months. Here's some random facts from my fic. Let's go.
Ok mostly they're opposites in everything (very predictable, I know). Rafal dresses like a royal, Rhian has an infinite amount of copies of the same outfit like a cartoon character. Rafal is charming and good at speeches and all that jazz, Rhian doesn't want to be percieved. Rafal is a Light Yagami kinnie, Rhian has 0 self esteem. Rafal is an absolute monster, Rhian is a literal angel. You get the drill. One thing that they do have in common is that they're both introverts.
They're left handed. It's not relevant, I just accidentally made them left handed in a drawing and now I decided it's canon.
Random Rhian facts: he's your typical Hufflepuff. He has a pretty smile. He hates responsabilities and talking to stranger. He likes walking in the woods. He deserved better. I miss him a lot (and I make him suffer in every chapter even tho he's my favourite character).
Rhian is the only valid straight person in sge sorry I don't make the rules 😔✋🏻. I think I accidentally made Rafal aromantic. I sincerely apologize to all my aro followers for that.
According to Personality Databes, Rafal's MBTI type is INTJ. I decided that Rhian is INFP because I kin him.
As I said in a previous post, Rhian is a cottagecore king and Rafal is too much into dark royalcore. Uhm. Interesting contrast.
Rhian's talent is ice magic (because their dad is related to the Snow Queen) and Rafal's is controlling shadows (Shadow!Rafal canon ✨).
They actually became school masters a short time after their third year (does that count as a fourth year quest?!). The reasons why they put two litteral 18 year olds on charge of protecting the most important entity in the woods? 1. They're two twins from different schools, therefore a perfect symbol of balance between Good and Evil (wich was very needed in that time period). 2. They're some of the best students from that year. 3. The previous School Master died suddenly (... long story) and they were really desperate to find a new one. 4. Their dad is famous and no one wants to upset him. 5. "They're siblings!! They should get along!!! Right?!" (And then they didn't).
Rhian didn't even want to be a School Master, one day Rafal basically went "Hey I know you want to live in a cottage with your gf and shit but I wanna become the School Master very badly and they probably won't let me without you" and Rhian was like "😀?!?!? Ok I guess?!?!!!!" (Spoiler: it was a terrible idea).
Pretty irrelevant but young Rafal wears a shitton of rings because I think they're cool. Later on he gets into gloves (because they give creepy vibes and also for sad edgy reasons).
Their mother (Ingrid, name stolen from @tedros-is-helpless ) is a former Ever and their father (mr Isa Mistral, that fucking bastard) is a Never. Wich creates a lot of drama, even tho Isa doesn't live with them.
Rafal is good at seeing people's true natures (=mostly if they're Evers or Nevers) and Rhian is good at understanding other people's emotions. Except that they use these qualities in the worst way possible. So yeah my first hot take from today are "Rafal has some sort of emotional intelligence but he only uses it for evil".
Rhian is generally better at magic and Rafal is furios about it, even tho he doesn't show it.
Rafal really gets into weapons (especially very fancy daggers that can conveniently be hidden in your sleeve to kill your brother).
No but they were actually very close when they where little, but they broke apart a little bit when they started school. Rhian kinda hoped that becoming the school masters would solve everything, but as you might expect it got really shitty real quick (and it was Rafal's fault, as always. He's gross).
My secon hot take is "the only person Rafal ever loved was Rhian and deep down he regrettes killing him". And he knew that Rhian cared about him but he simply decided to ignore it and pursue power instead. (Also his idea of "caring" is "I want him by my side and I don't want him dead" and not "I want him to be happy").
Rafal felt like he could only be truly himself with Rhian, wich either means "snarky edgy teen" or "manipulative and controlling monster that only cares about himself" depending on the context. Basically he's only nice to important people and he's passive aggressive.
Rhian is only twenty-something when he dies and that breaks me (even tho I wrote it). Also he always tried to justify Rafal's actions because he didn't want to lose him and, even tho he eventually had to put the School's safety first, he loved him until the very end. Maybe it doesn't hit you as hard described like this, but it definetly hit me hard a worring amount of times a day.
So yeah. Here's what, as the kids say, lived into my mind rent free for the last year. I wrote most of this at 1 am and it shows. Please like it.

Oh boi, do you'all actually hate me or ... ? anyways, let's break him down.
But because of rules, spoliers ahead !!!
Rafal is one of the other Sombron/Xenobron's child and possibly an alternate version to one of Alear's half sibling in Elyos (though it's a bit of a touchy subject) , even if in this world he isn't family to his Alear.
Like all of Xenobron's children, he had a twin but this twin died a long time ago and when he was too young to remember so he was the only Fell child to be all alone in an environnement surronded by pair of twins. He became friends with his half brother, Nil, whom he strangely ressembled a whole lot. But during the parralel war of 1 000 Nil died in a battle and Rafal switched his place with him, making believe he died as he promised dying Nil to watch over Nel and that's what happenend, 1 000 years of assuming Nil's identity. One day, Xenobron noticed he was able to awake Emblems and approached him, promising him that he would become his heir and additionally, took advantage of this to curse the dragonstone he shared with Nel. Then once Altlear and Xenobron killed each other, operation ressurection of Papabron began and then it unpacks with the whole Fell xenologue events until Nel dies to save him and him, remorseful ends up a ressurection session like Lumimi did with Alear until she woke up 1 000 as atonement and the two move in our Elyos.
Alright, let's begin
1- Rafal is a shetty written villain/forced antagonist
Tumblr media
If you want to explain Engage's internal writing problem, Rafal is probably an empitome for it. While his support proves him to be an excellent character, the DLC story is so lame that he is forced to be the antagonist although his motivations barely makes him one. Not to excuse his actions (since he himself refuse it) but it's probably because he is such a sheety villain he works so well as a redeeming one cause if there is one thing you can give him is that 1) he is actually a threat in the DLC (brrr;;;;; map 5) and also 2) he is a well written character when HE IS ALLOWED TO BE HIMSELF but we'll go through it once I am done explaining the crime he commited.
According to the devs and his support with Ivy, he didn't killed everyone but only 1) The royals to turn them into Corrupted, the only consenting victims being Ivyalt
Tumblr media
And he also admitted to have killed all his remaining siblings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And he ... well cause Nel to die but she came back so... does that count ? idk
One thing for sure, he did a lot of awful thing he himself is ashamed of and once you beat the sheet out of him, he goes on redemption arc
Now one thing a lot of people wondered is : isn"t it a bit easy that Alear forgives him like this when he say stuff like that ?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, let's find out !
2- Rafal's way of speech.
Ok, so there's something important about this guy when we speaks of transalation. The localization tended to make him seems more arrogant in the eng compared to the jpn version because the jpn version can use prounons to convey Rafal's arrogance whereas the eng version has to rely on a choice of words rather snobbish in order to make him seem haughty. You probably had noticed that Y.Chang switches between two tones to signify that he is Nil or Rafal. Well, Takuya Eguchi does the same, but he also swtiches prounons. I really wished I could share the audio of the JPN dub but tumblr won't let me so I'll just link two video so you can compare how he speaks differently when he is Nil and when is Rafal.
When Rafal speaks as Nil, he uses boku/僕 i kanji form to showcase it's an adult man speaking as opposed to young boys who either uses katakana or hiragana, which is Nil's case when we see the recollections flashbacks as he speaks entirely in hiragana. Boku is considered to be a masculine way of saying I but is less informal or viritliy assertive as ore/俺 which is used by both Gregory and Griss, it is also considered to be a form used by character with a kind temparement so Rafal uses it whenever he speaks to impersonnates Nil due to wanting to fit with Nil's kind nature.
However, when Rafal speaks as himself, he uses ware/我 which is a peculiar case when speaking of japanese pronouns. It's an archaic form of refering to one self since it's more common in old japanese and it's use is more literary if anything, but to be fair, japanses in anime and video games and sons is drastically different then japanese spoken in real life. Regardless, it's a form that is often used by character who consider themselves important due to either being 1 000 year old or having the statuts of a royalitie or a kami. Rafal being a proud character, there is nothing surprising as him using prounons that makes him looks arrogant. However... guess what ? Sombron uses the same prounons as Rafal. Yep.
Tumblr media
And that's not all. If you compare Rafal's way of speaking using a lot of "zo" and "ga", to Sombron's, you'll realize that Rafal speaks the exact same way as Sombron. The way someone speaks is a reflection of his own mind and apprehension of the world. When i said : "when HE IS ALLOWED TO BE HIMSELF" I am refering to the fact that in the whole Fell Xenologue he plays 2 role, and his speech reflects that. During the great portion of the Fell Xenologue plot he pretends to be Nil like he did for 1 000 years. But he also wasn't being himself during the second part and begining of the DLC since he was possesed/cursed (literaly this time) and because of this... he really does speak like Sombron
Tumblr media
Doesn't that remind you of someone ? And while Sombron and Xenobron are different person and that they might have different objective, they still speak in a similar manner hence there is nothing surprising as Rafal saying things that are similar to our Sombron even if he isn't his actual dad but just the alternate version (please bear with me ? ik that the Fell Xenologue's plot is downright stopid but hey). Rafal is definitely emulating his father and in the game, it is portrayed as being due to Sombron's curse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the game during those scenes, he has the animation showing him bowing, like for when Veyle switched her personailty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, not to be that "JPN dub is superior to ENG dub" person because 1) it's false, 3H and Engage gave us impressive VA and Y.Chang is doing an amazing job but.... can we talk about how in this scene Takuya Eguchi looks like he is at the verge of his life ? I am serious, his acting makes Rafal's possesion sounds even more obvious then in the JPN dub . Not to mention, that the localization sorta missed the point because in the jpn he says "My chest hurts, always, always !!"
Tumblr media
Yep you guessed it, that's why his chest hurts.
The fact that he speaks like Sombron, bore HIS wishes rather then his own, that even the dragon form he had looked quite similar to that of Sombron as opposed as his regular Fell Dragon form more alike to Nel shows that he is indeed under Sombron's influence, even more then the simple case of possesion
3- Possesion as a metaphor
Look, I am not saying that Fe is the kind of series where I expect the writer to use "possesion" as a symbolic device rather then a way to explain why they force a traumatized kid to be a forced antagonist and other then an obvious trope beloved by Kaga except instead of another damsel in distress, it's a pretty boi. (#RafalistheLyonarchetypeofEngage) However with the elements I mentionned earlier, it's obvious that the Sombron's spell goes along to show how a victim of parental abuse can be robbed of their agency and ends up interiozing and emphazing with their abusers, and in the case of Rafal, he is like Veyle since his long lasting abuse, inferiority complex, self validation issues and lack of love lead him to feel alone. Must I remind you that once he lost his twin he was all alone for a long time in an environnement consistuting in Fell children comploting against one another, making him an easy prey and he like Nil was traited as a failure except that Nil followed pretty much the same thing as Alcryst that is to say that his belief in being weak, he accepted it as truth and was rather self depricating, whereas Rafal never wanted to accept it and as a result, sought to prove his worth in return for a proof of acknowledgment. Like I mentionned in my Zephia dive about Sombron sharing his definition of family was like a "curse" that sealed Zephia's fate, Sombron telling Rafal how he would be a suitable heir for him was the curse as it was the proof of worth, the acknowledgement he was desesperately seeking for and even Nel's love wasn't enough because ...
4- Rafal has identity crisis and syndrome of the imposter
Must I remind you that Nil died when he was a CHILD. This means Rafal had to see his brother and only friend died when he was CHILD but that he accepted to remplace him as a CHILD. He cast away his identity when he was still a CHILD. He accepted to be someone he wasn't when he was a CHILD. Do I keep going on or is it clear ? If you recall, he said "I made belived I was the one who died that day, I was in a way". And why ? 1000 of acting as someone you aren't, this might make you ask thousand of existential question; and this happening at the time he was still a kid, a person in a process of building his identity. But that's only the tip of the iceberg, really. The real problem, the reason why he couldn't accept Nel's love is RIGHT THERE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The reason why Rafal cherished and hate his time at Lythos at the same time is so obvious. The reason why he feel like Nel's love isn't for him is also obvious. Because he isn't Nil. Sure, he is Nel's half sibling, but he isn't her twin brother, her one true half, the one she cherished and wished to protect, the one for whom she betrayed her own Father even though it may have ended her life. All she did, was out of love but nor for him as Rafal but for Nil, her dead brother. And even though Rafal promised Nil to protect Nel and made her happy and even then wished for her happines since he came to think of her as her true neesan, he can't help but feel guilty because "It should be Nil not me who has that" is exactly what he means by "that treasure is a stolen one" even if it was Nil's dying wish. His inner self hatred, validation issue and so on and so on cannot make him feel like he deserves Nel's love since it's directed to someone else. He knows that when Nel looks at him, she doesn't see Rafal, but Nil. She doesn't see him as who he is and he doesn't have the right to be himself, not for Nil's sake, he can't be loved for he is because he has to pretend to be someone else. Which hurts even more as Nel, the person he love most doesn't acknowledge his existence since she think he is Nil. So of course, even with Nel to protect him and love him, in truth, he never felt more alone because he felt like she never saw him, which made him even more vulnerable to Sombron's machination and worsen his wanting to prove his worth. Because (yes I know it's not Xenobron, it's our Sombron but point still stand)
Tumblr media
If you remember what I said commenting it, our Sombron knew that his children were feared and hated and entirely dependent of him. The situation in XenElyos being not so different (*cough, cough, the Firenalt sibling and other clearly having hostility to the Fell twins cough*) with whatsmore siblings hating each other and ready to stab each other's back and him feeling even more inferior due to knowing he will never be loved like Nil is and that each of Nel's gesture are actually directed at Nil made him even more dependent of his abuser. What'smore, remember Wounded Pride ? His personal skill ? Well, remember that even if he had this skill only when he was pretending to be Nil... it still representative of Rafal as a whole since his own pride got wonded many times. And this is because of this that he was under Sombron's influence on two level 1) the possesion spell 2) his emulation of Sombron. It's also quite the deal that the word Sombron told him as he was casting this spell on his chest makes it happen at the same moment, hence renforcing the impression that the possesion is here to show that it's not only because of the spell he is under Sombron's influence, but also because of all he's been through, Sombron's shadow still soar over him and the possession spells can hence be seen on a double level. He almost BECOME Sombron, having the same wish, same speech, same freaking dragon appearance. Even if he still had some of his agency and that unlike Veyle he doesn't got "what happened o - o ?" once the spell is broken, he was still essentially under Sombron's influence
5- Nel's breaking the spell on 2 level
Tumblr media
Alright, if you recall to break the spell Nel had to break her own dragonstone which can only break because... she dies.
Ok now, remember all that I said about Rafal wanting someone to acknowledge his existence and all i said about how he gave up on Nel being this person. Well, Nel's sacrifice broke the spell AND on a second level definitely freed Rafal from Sombron's influence because this was literaly the biggest act that one could do for him. What's more Nel revealing that she always knew his real identity (andthusmakingeverythingthathappenedfallflatsaidshewithrepressedanger) made Rafal realized that all of Nel's kind gesture towards him were really genuinely for HIM and not directed at a Nil whose sister and identity he stole according to him, that Nel was seeing him and acknowledge his existence, that she always returned the love he gave her. All of this was enough to make Rafal realized he don't need Sombron cause remember what he said when he lost ? "If i can't carry out father's ambitions, I am useless". What's more;... he always had suicidal tendencies
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He wanted Nel, the person he loves most, his sister to end his life. In truth, what he truly wanted was Nel's love but he still felt like he didn't deserved it because he is an impostor, he stole Nil's sister, he stole what belong to him etc.
Tumblr media
That's the face he made as he though Nel was going to kill him. FREAKING SMILING. Dear God.
But Nel dying to free him from Sombron's influence made him realized he was indeed loved (Nelisbestgirldon't@ me); This made him come back to his sense when he could have gone as far has literaly becoming his dad and like I mentionned we saw him as both Nil and Evil Nil/Sombron 3.0 hence the actual reason why the DLC failed his characterization (unti the snap moment) is because he wasn't being himself in literaly all sense until Nel's stabbed herself, until he snapped. I mean remember whe first saw him as Nil, then as whatever creepy face he made in the nigthmare that is map 5 and even as he spoke to Nel we don't see his actual face, he is shown from behind, eyes closed, and then the spells begin to strike back until Alear pops up and we see his damaged face

a dominating kiss to end an argument
Soren probably meant to punch Rafal when he grabbed the other's collar, last syllable of their argument on his lips. He thought it was clear who was right (himself, as usual) and who was delusional, but when it seemed Rafal was going to protest—
It was like magnets snapping together, black and white colliding with force as Soren gave a harsh, consuming kiss to Rafal, not even bothering to say shut up when he could take the shortcut and make him.
He didn't even regret it- yet? Tacticians understood ruses came in many necessary forms.
𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐊𝐈𝐒𝐒 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓
Emblem Soren. Real Soren. He found that what few differences existed between the two did so with striking transparency. Without the boon of levitation the true Soren was even shorter than the already diminutive Emblem who once floated at his side, whose relic wrapped in the form of a bracelet around Rafal's very wrist. A smaller and seemingly feeble body, however, did not qualify for the Fell Dragon's mercy and- by the look of things- didn't need it in the slightest, either.
"If you mean to strike then do it." He glared coldly down at the shorter- weaker- man when he seized his collar, knowing just how to twist a knife even when he rested beneath one himself. Tension commanded his form as he made to move; to protest, or to push Soren away, to attack him or- "I will relish in the knowledge that you could never best me in words!! Instead you must resort to—"
But there was no impression of weakness as he originally assumed. Not a single drop of it in the collision between them as the Fell Dragon was hauled down for a bruising match of mouths that earned his startled hiss. If the goal was his silence then Soren had seized it successfully in a decisive maneuver, but one could wonder whether there was any meaning to one battle lost when another one had just begun.
Did you think this was your easy victory?
He kissed him back. Of course he did. Knocking their teeth together and striping his nails across all the fleshy spaces they could reach. Because Rafal never backed down from a challenge. Because he would ensure doubly that a flimsy mage ever regretted ambushing Rafal in such a way. With a bite he would ruin his expectation for victory; with mussing hands he knew the dedication that went into tidy long hair equal to his own, so he would ruin that too.
By the end when they pulled apart in a tumult of tired breathing, he pressed his thumb against the corner of his mouth. Come away with something wet, red, and salty smeared across it. Not his own. In noticing that, the white dragon's ensuing smirk glowed like a dragonstone.
