hi! I hope you're having a lovely day :) feel free to ignore this if you don't want to do more work on tumblr lol, but you seem very knowledgeable about all sorts of historical and touristy things in Portugal, so I figured I'd ask anyway!

I'm going to north Portugal in September on my honeymoon, we're spending 5 days in Porto, then a couple of days near the Douro valley, and then a few days near Manteigas in the Serra da Estrela national park.

me and my husband are both very into museums/art galleries and historic buildings - is there anything in Porto that we absolutely shouldn't miss whilst we're there? is there any particular food we should try? do you have any recommendations for cafes or restaurants to visit?

Porto is beautiful and I promise you are going to love it, and I admit I'm excited about you going to Serra da Estrela. It's so quiet at that time of the year, all you hear is nature, it's just so peaceful. Also, please try the cheese. Serra da Estrela cheese is a sin, it's so good, and you can go straight to the source there.

In Porto, there is a lot to see, especially if you enjoy museums, monuments and galleries, so I'll list a few things:

Palácio da Bolsa is a must, in my opinion. I believe they have guided tours, if you are interested in that.

Clérigos Church, Hospital and Tower. The view from up there is amazing, but the whole building is rich with history and super interesting, and the church is beautiful.

Porto's Cathedral, which includes the Chapter House and has some amazing artworks inside.

The entire area of the old Borrough of Porto, which is the hill where the Cathedral sits on. That is where the oldest house in Porto is (in Beco dos Redemoinhos, it's about 700 years old), or where the "stairs of the queen" also are, said to have been the stairs taken Countess Teresa on her way to the church that would later become the Cathedral, and the watch tower in front of it.

There are points of interest you might come across as must-sees in Porto but you're better off standing there looking at it cause they're either expensive or they're a McDonalds. The McDonalds building is beautiful, yes. Majestic café is a unique art nouveau building, but it's SO expensive.

On that note, Lello. Lello is interesting and super beautiful, I am not one to discourage people from visiting it. But expect a long line. (it's right next to Clérigos and you can see it from there...). However, you can buy the tickets online (I think they're 5€) and that allows you to skip the line, and if you buy a book, the price of the ticket is deducted from your purchase.

For museums, Soares dos Reis has a lot of art, from painting to sculpture to decorative arts, and it's rich with some of the most important portuguese artists, focused mostly on the circle of Porto, especially from the 19th century.

Porto is known ofr being a vast sea of blue and white tiles. You don't have to look for them, you will just find them. However, Capelinha das Almas and Church of Santo Ildefonso are a good example (Ildefonso stares at Clérigos directly... they were once rivals).

And on THAT note... São Bento Train Station. It is worth it just standing there admiring the architecture and the tiles (keep in mind a lot of these things are stuff you can just include on a long walk)

Some streets... Rua das Flores, or famously Rua de Santa Catarina (where you'll find Majestic and Capelinha das Almas) they're all just very nice walks. Same for Ribeira (the riverside). No plans, just a walk while enjoying the view.

If you are interested in Contemporary Art, Fundação Serralves. At the very least, the gardens are wonderful and they're just a great place to rest and enjoy the afternoon (I think they have cafés there too, but I haven't been there in years, now).

Go on a Douro Valley tour. I cannot emphasise how great these are. You get to visit a handful of cellars, try several wines and enjoy a ride across the Douro. In Porto itself, they also have boat rides across the Douro, some might have wine, I'm not sure, but I find it so much more enriching to do a Douro Valley tour and be able to visit the cellars.

As for food and where to eat, I am not going to give you any restaurant names because I KNOW I have people from Porto who follow me and they can answer that better than I can, but there's 2 things I usually tell people to try in Porto.

One, of course, is Francesinha. It's going to feel like it's a lot. I call it a tower of bread with fibre for days. But try it, because nowhere else in Portugal can they make them as well as they make them in Porto. Besides it's one of the most important hallmarks of Porto culture, and I find that it's a fundamental experience in your journey to try Francesinha. It's like going to Valencia and trying Paella, you just HAVE to.

The other one is a personal opinion and choice of mine because, well, Portugal is known for codfish dishes and my all time favourite codfish dish was born in Porto and it's Bacalhau à Gomes Sá. If I'm not mistaken, it was born on a restaurant that was nearby Ribeira, somewhere in that area, and they actually put up a goddamn plaque celebrating this

Ribeira is the easiest place to find this dish, but it's going to be above average in price (I can guarantee you someone will come into this post to scream that it's a complete theft how expensive it is, but we're just poor and cheapskates, and the restaurants aren't bad. Again, they're going to be above average but not all are ridiculously overprices).

On a final note, if you're interested in doing a walk tour of Porto, there are several companies that do so, but I happen to know a guide who is currently living and working in Porto and I can ask her availability and you guys can agree on something if you're interested. Just let me know!

When you look her up online it shows plenty of articles about her being in a romantic relationship with her best friend Justin, who is according to lipstick alley's Chris Evans fans a gay man because in the "Chris Evans Relationship Theories Part 10" thread, they claimed that in Alba's instagram post about the GQ MOTY awards, you can see his boyfriend tagged by her under "Styling".

Her gay best friend Justin is a not-well known movie director. For what does he need a beard? It looks more that she was in need of a merkin. I mean, why else did her team post all these articles about her and Justin all the time in the past?

Remember, she was supposed to be pushed too with her warrior nun show. When Chris and her had the New York pap walk in November 2022 when season 2 of her WN show premiered. So netflix apparently wanted her to make an A-lister too evidenced by the fact that they chose former A lister Chris Evans as a merkin for her. And through my blog you have found out that Hollywood is still homophobic so she needs to be presented as a heterosexual to the public.

I came up with that thought when an industry insider called Janet B on lipstick alley claimed she is a lesbian:

To qualify, you need to start a company and create at least ten jobs in Portugal (or eight in less populated areas). Each employee must be registered with the Portuguese Social Security system. You have the opportunity to inject €500,000 into an established business in Portugal, generating and sustaining five new full-time positions for three years. Corporate tax is 21%, and personal income tax ranges from 14.5% to 48%.  

Benefits of Portugal Golden Visa Program 

Portugal's Tier A passport is among the best, granting visa-free access to 191 countries in 2024, making it the third most powerful passport as mentioned by the Nomad Passport Index. While investing in a residency permit won't automatically make you a citizen, it's a step towards it. The naturalization process in Portugal is relatively quick, just five years. You can enjoy visa-free travel within the Schengen Area and many other countries during this time. You also gain the right to work and live in Portugal and other EU/EEA nations. Portugal's investment visa is considered stable, and Portugal offers tax benefits for crypto investors.  

Capital Contributions with Portugal's Golden Visa 

For those not taking the entrepreneur route, simpler options like capital contributions are available. Due to recent changes, this route has become more appealing but is pricier. 

Investment options for Portugal's Golden Visa include: 

€500,000 in Venture Capital/Private Equity Fund 

€500,000 as a Donation to Research Activities 

€250,000 for Donations to Arts These investments must be maintained for five years of residence.

Golden Visa: Requirements, Documents and Fees 

1. Fulfill the minimum residence requirement

Then, when you renew your permit for the next three years, you'll need to pay a total of 21 days in Portugal. After that, you only need to spend a minimum of seven days per year in the country to keep your residency. 

2. Provide proper documentation 

Applying for the Portugal Golden Investment Visa is more straightforward than applying for other citizenship programs. You can apply online through their Immigration and Borders Services portal or have a legal representative do it. However, it's essential to understand the process to avoid mistakes. You must submit personal documents, proof of investment, and other paperwork like a background check, health insurance, and evidence of tax compliance. All documents must be recent. 

3. Be a third-country national 

This requirement means you can't already be a citizen of Portugal or any EU or EEA country. While over half of the applicants are from China, others from countries like Russia, Turkey, South Africa, Brazil, and more are also applying.  

4. Maintain a qualified investment for five years 

As the principal applicant, you must keep the investment if you and your family have a Portugal visa and Golden residency status. Once you attain permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship, you are no longer required to maintain the investment. 

5. Pay all related fees 

The Portuguese government offers a Tier A passport for wealthy investors seeking EU access. Alongside your investment, applicants pay a €5,000 ($5,364) fee, which is reduced by half upon renewal. A processing fee of €533 (US$571) for the principal applicant and €83 (US$89) for each family member, payable with the initial application and renewals. Lisbon - Day 8 - Walking Around

Friday 10/6

We are leaving Lisbon for Porto tomorrow and starting to prepare for our train trip. I came back to our apartment after emptying the garbage and our electronic front door wouldn’t unlock. Luckily MaryEllen was still inside. It is a keyless entry and for some reason the green light turned on after entering the correct code, but the door latch didn’t respond by unlocking. After about 1/2 hour of communication back and forth with our host and playing around with the lock, it started working again. The rest of the day we were concerned that the lock may malfunction again. Luckily the host provided us with a way to get a key to manually unlock the door if it failed again. So much for IOT (Internet of Things)!

We need to buy our train tickets still for Porto. We attempted to do it online but the web site kept switching between English and Portuguese, making it very difficult to understand how to use the site. Since there was a train station two blocks from our apartment, we decided just to walk over and get our tickets there.

Today we walked up the tree-lined Avenida de Libberdade to the Parque Edwardo VII. Avenida Libberdade is where a number of upscale retail stores are located (eg, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Guess, Boss), plus one of the areas where American expats tend to live.

Real estate is not cheap in Lisbon. This 4 bedroom 4 bath apartment with parking for 3 cars is for sale for $2.6 million.

We stopped and had a picnic lunch under the trees at the edge of the park. After lunch we walked though the park. Supposedly there were two Pickleball courts there, but we couldn’t find them. We found the tennis courts, but no Pickleball. I guess we not moving to Portugal :-).

At the opposite end of the park was El Corte Ingles, a large seven story upscale department store. We went inside and found a luxurious selection of high-end designer merchandise, even surpassing that of Bloomingdale's in the US. It provided our first glimpse into the lifestyles of Lisbon's more affluent residents.

We then decided to continue walking in a new neighborhood so we could check out a restaurant that sounded good. We got lost a number of times even with the aid of Google maps. Below is some street art we saw along the way.

During our walk we saw some roosters struting around at a park we passed. In Portugal, the rooster symbolizes honesty and good fortune, stemming from the tale of the “Galo de Barcelos” (Rooster of Barcelos). This 17th-century legend tells of a man falsely accused of theft. He boldly proclaimed that a roasted rooster at the dinner table would crow at his execution to prove his innocence. Miraculously, the roaster rooster stood up on the serving plate and crowed, and as a result the man's life was spared. 

Tuk tuks provide unique way to explore the Lisbon, especially with its narrow, hilly streets which are challenging for larger vehicles. Tuk tuks can be hired by tourists for guided tours around Lisbon.

Back at our apartment, we took one last view of of the Monumento aos Restauradores and the surround area just before sunset from our living room window.

For dinner we had chicken Peri Peri at Bonjardim Restaurante.

Start dancing again! I don’t know yet what kind of dance, maybe try ballet again, or jazz dancing. I enjoyed a lot doing belly dance and aerial silks too. But I also would love to try pole dancing and tap dance - so many options!

Remember to stretch everyday correctly, never stay sitting down for longer than 2 hours without getting up.

Drinking at least 3 bottles of water per day - I already got a lot better at remembering to drink water, but it’s still not enough.

Get a bike and start going out with it.

Taking sun baths on the early morning - before 9 am.

Other things

Start reading again - let’s set the bar “low” for this year, at least 30 books. (Low comparing to before high school, where I would read at least 50 per year - was so proud of one year I got 84!)

Get back to writing - doesn’t matter what, fanfiction, poetry, short tales...

Learn to sew a few clothes - I really want to make all of my clothing someday, if possible.

Learn embroidery!

Get a better comprehension and speaking of spanish!

If possible, I would love to visit Chile again, and get to know Argentina and Uruguay, since I’ll be studying so close to the border.

I also really want to be able to visit Portugal and Spain again, meet the family that I haven’t seen since I was 6.

IF I manage to get better at spanish, I would like to try and start learning a fourth language. Don’t know which yet - italian, japanese, mandarin (modern), french or arabic.

IF possible, I would like to be able to *slowly* let go of my antidepressants. My dosage has already gone down this past years, but since 2020 I’ve been stuck.

Get actually tested to TDAH and autism, and if confirmed, learn ways to cope with what bothers me. I’ve been thinking about buying some ear noice reducing plugs for when I am out, since it sometimes makes me anxious.

And above all, I want to make the most out of my time on this world. No matter what happens, or where I am, I hope I can continue trying and hoping for better things. I wish all of you the same. Happy New Year to all of us that survived these trying times -  I hope I can say that again at the end.

The "A Muralha" exhibit features stunning murals that cover an entire wall of a building. The street exhibition Lisbon was a stunning display of art that showcased the talent of many artists. The city government organized the event to celebrate the arts, and it was a success. Visitors were able to walk through the streets and admire the beautiful paintings, sculptures, and other pieces on display. Some of the art was interactive, allowing people to play with it or even climb on top of it. It was an amazing experience and I encourage everyone to check out a similar event in their area.

Why numbers matter: Japan, a country with a population of over 124.2 million, is ranked at 121 in the Gender Inequality Index (GII) published by Human Development Reports 2020.  Japanese women got the vote in 1946 – earlier than China (1949), Liechtenstein (1984) and Switzerland (1993).

In the ranking chart of the Global Gender Gap 2020, the top ten reads as follows: 1: Iceland; 2: Norway; 3: Finland; 4: Sweden; 5: Nicaragua; 6: New Zealand; 7: Ireland; 8: Spain; 9: Rwanda; 10: Germany. The UK ranked 21, following Albania at number 20. Though Japan falls some 100 places behind the UK, the latter’s ranking at 21 is nothing to be proud of either. Clearly there is plenty of work to be done in both countries. Hence, NUMBERS MATTER 121 features four special projects led by Japanese women: Chiharu MK, Otaco, Yu Kawabata (in collaboration with German poemproducer AGF) and Mayuko Hino.

Footnote: In the Press Freedom Index published in 2020, Japan and the UK don’t fare much better than in the GII. Out of 180 countries listed, the UK is ranked at 33 and Japan at 66. The countries listed from one to ten are as follows: Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Switzerland, New Zealand, Portugal and Germany.

Chiharu MK is from Sapporo. Primarily trained as a composer, she studied the acousmonium, that is, the sound diffusion system, at INA-GRM studio in Paris. Since completing her studies in 2002, she has become an internationally recognised electroacoustic sound artist, either performing or creating sound installations for festival, gallery or non-concert hall spaces in Europe, Hong Kong and Japan. For Intersect 2015, she commissioned the non-Japanese artists Francisco López, Sogar and Taylor Deupree to compose sounds for a 17.1 multi Channel Speaker System (consisting of seven speakers + ten screen speakers + one woofer) in Sapporo city centre’s underground walkway. Chiharu MK’s new multimedia work Paramnesia 2020 is based on her original piece for Hong Kong Art Centre’s 40th anniversary multi-channel Sound Forms festival in 2018.

This film shows her performing the piece inside Glass Pyramid, nicknamed Hidamari – Japanese for Sunny Spot, it’s the centrepiece of Sapporo’s Moerenuma Park, designed by Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988). Construction work on the park actually began in the year Noguchi died, and it opened in 2005. The film also shows Chiharu MK recording on Ishikari beach, just north of Sapporo.

Taking her name from tako, the Japanese word for octopus, Otaco is originally from Japan’s northernmost main island Hokkaido. An electronic musician and vocalist, Otaco is one of the most vibrant and engaging performers to emerge from the alternative music scene anywhere in Japan.

Now living in Tokyo, she operates a home studio set-up of a rhythm box with a synthesizer; she samples and syncs sounds into a computer, running them into real-time sequences to construct her outre pop-electronica songs and instrumentals. Otaco also plays guitar when she leads Gotou, an occasional rock trio formed out of homage to early 1980s West Berlin groups Mania D and Malaria!. She appeared for the first time in the UK during Coding In GE 2018 festival for women and technology.

Antye Greie also know as AGF was born and raised in East Germany. She is a vocalist, digital songwriter, producer, performer, e-poet, calligrapher, digital media artist. In the last decade Greie has released more than 20 full length records and played over 300 live performances worldwide. AGF runs her own production company AGF Production  – http://antyegreie.com She first worked with Yu Kawabata on her 2015 album A Deep Mysterious Tone, the third in AGF’s series of settings and poetry interpretations from different countries, this one featuring Japanese poets and writers including Noe Ito, Fumiko Kaneko, Shikubu Izumi, Blue Stocking editor and writer Hiratsuka Raicho, and more.

Yu Kawabata is a techno DJ active in Japan and Russia. This is Yu and AGF’s second collaboration. On their first, AGF set to music Yu’s reading of a waka poem, written by the 12th century court lady Yūshi Naishinnō-ke no Kii, enumerated as one of the Thirty-Six Female Immortals of Poetry. Since resuming music in 2011 after a ten year break to study Chinese medicine, Mayuko Hino has reclaimed her status as queen of noise.

A prolific live performer, Hino is best known for C.C.C.C. (Cosmic Coincidence Control Center), the group she formed in 1990 with Hiroshi Hasegawa, Fumio Kosakai and Ryuichi Nagakubo. In their early phase, the band grabbed attention by combining noise music with Hino’s sadomasochism performances using bondage ropes and dripping candle wax. Hino has since been a member of Mne-Mic, DFH-M3 and her most recent group Transparentz with Akira Sakata, who split up in January 2020.

Whether solo or in her various group projects, Hino experiments with the function of noise music as a transdisciplinary medium, in the process to breaking the boundaries surrounding performance art: urban structure against man, art against non art, activity versus rest.

In 2018 Mayuko Hino performed at Iklectic’s Coding In GE Festival alongside and in collaboration with Ramleh. The same year she released her second solo album Lunisolar. In addition to self-made instruments, Hino plays noise with her six-theremin oscillators (in bright pink), a unique device specially made for her by Ryo Araishi (aka ichion)

This year Hino had planned to resume activities with C.C.C.C. to mark the US reissue of their first four albums, but unfortunately their plans had to be put on hold because of the pandemic.

“There’s a sense of momentum to be found in Hino’s noise; it’s rarely static… At the hands of Hino it seems astral travelling is as much out-of-this-world as it is an out-of-body experience… on Lunisolar she continues with the ever evolving atmospheric and psychedelic sound that energised the noise of C.C.C.C.” (Compulsion Online)

RANKO ONISHI (Mne-mic): voice

Performing artist Ranko Onishi was born in Hokkaido. She moved to Tokyo where she joined Shuji Terayama’s Tenjo Sajiki theatre company in 1980. She was a second year student of dancer Min Tanaka in 1982 and became a full member of Tanaka’s company in 1984. Five years later in 1989 she performed with Keiji Haino. She and Hino work together in the duo Mne-mic, featuring Hino on electronics, Theremin and synthesizer, and Onishi on voice, water and fogphone. Their album Gulf Stream was released by Alchemy Records in 1999.

While researching texts for AGF’s 2015 CD A Deep Mysterious Tone I developed a profound interest in women’s history in Japan. AGF and I first met and begain talking about her project while she was taking part in my hometown Sapporo’s International Arts Festival in 2014. For the album she compiled and set to music Japanese writings and poems from the ninth century to the present day, and commissioned the female electronic musicians Ryoko Akama (UK), Kyoka (Germany), Tujiko Noriko (France) and Yu Kawabata to read her selections. She had met them at European festivals, and as she got to know them she learnt these female electronic musicians are not treated very well when they’re back home in Japan.

Indeed NUMBERS MATTER 121 took seed in these discussions on women and Japan with AGF. In some ways it’s also a sequel to “Coding in GE”, the 2018 Iklectik festival offering a platform to female electronic musicians, for which we got funding from Sasakawa Foundation UK, and in which Otaco, Mayuko Hino and AGF participated.

Another question addressed in NUMBERS MATTER 121 is the subject of decentralisation.  I consciously asked musicians from outside Tokyo to participate in this project.

Books and Mirrors: As A New Year Dawns

You often hear the Hebrew phrase ḥeshbon ha-nefesh, literally “an accounting of the soul” in this regard—and those words really do capture the concept pithily and well: thinking of our lives as ledger-books in which our instances of moral courage and ethical inadequacy stand in for the accountant’s credits and debits works for me and will probably suit most. There is even a book with that title—Sefer Ḥeshbon Ha-nefesh by Rabbi Menaḥem Mendel Lefin, written in 1808 and the only rabbinic work known to have been directly influenced by the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin—which I wrote about to you all a few years ago just before Pesach. How exactly to go about this is a different question, however. I suppose some people really can just sit down and review the year week by week, noting where they personally feel themselves to have come up short and resolving to respond in a way more in keeping with the moral code they claim to espouse when facing analogous situations in the future. For most of us, though, that process—although theoretically possible—is not that practical an approach to the larger enterprise: who can remember the days of our lives with clear-eyed enough exactitude to analyze deeds from months ago with the certainty that we are remembering things precisely correctly? Fortunately, there are other ways to see ourselves clearly and for many, myself included, the simplest answer is to use a mirror.  Not a real one, of course, in which you can only see the reflection of your outermost appearance. But there are other kinds of mirrors available to us, some of which have the ability to reflect the inner self and which can serve, therefore, more like windows into the soul than the kind of mirror you look into each morning when you brush your teeth and see yourself looking back with a toothbrush in your mouth.

For me personally and for many years now, that mirror has always been a book I’ve chosen to read or re-read during Elul in the hope that it will allow me to see myself reflected either in its plot, in the way some specific one of its characters is depicted, or in the world it describes. Over the years, I’ve chosen well and less well. But when I do somehow manage to choose the right book for Elul, that choice makes all the difference by allowing me to see myself in the depiction of another far more clearly than I think I ever could have managed on my own.

This year I read Marcos Aguinis’ novel, Against the Inquisition.  Although the author is apparently very well-known in his native Argentina and throughout the Spanish-speaking world, I hadn’t ever heard of him until just this last July when Dara Horn published a review of the new English-language translation by Carolina de Robertis of his most successful book, called La Gesta del Marrano in Spanish, in Moment magazine. The review was stellar (to read it for yourself, click here) and left me intrigued enough to buy a copy with the intention of it being my Elul book for this year. It wasn’t a big investment, so I wasn’t risking much. (Used paperback copies and the e-book version are both available online for less than $5 each.) But it turned out to be exactly the right choice: I just finished it earlier this week and found myself truly astounded both by the author’s literary skill and, even more so, by what the book has to say about the nature of Jewishness itself.

Seeing myself in the protagonist, Francisco Maldonado da Silva—a real historical figure who lived from1592 to 1639—was simple enough. Imagining myself reaching the level of piety, self-awareness, courage, and moral decency he exemplified in his life and, even more so, in his death—that was the mirror into which I found myself peering as I read Aguinis’s book. I don’t have to be him, obviously. But I do have to be me. And so the question is not whether I could learn Spanish and move to the seventeenth century, but whether I have it in me to be me in the same sense that the book’s protagonist was himself. If the concept sounds obscure when I formulate it that way, read the book and you’ll see what I mean: I can hardly remember feeling more personally challenged by a novel, and more eager to accept the protagonist as a moral role model. Against the Inquisition is a historical novel, of course, not a non-fiction work of “regular” history. But it tells a true story…and the opportunity to read the story, to take it to heart, to be moved incredibly by its detail, and to feel transformed by the experience of communing with a great Jewish thinker through the medium of his art—that is the gift Against the Inquisition offers to its readers.

The plot, fully rooted in the real Francisco Maldonado da Silva’s life story, is beyond moving. The details of Jewish life in Latin America in the late 1500s and the early 1600s will be obscure to most readers in North America today. But the short version is that all of South America except Brazil was part of the Spanish Empire back then. And the Catholic authorities (whose power over the region’s secular rulers was almost absolute) were dedicated not merely to making the practice of Judaism illegal, but to ferreting out even the vaguest traces of Jewish practice of belief that might still be lingering among the so-called “New” Christians, the descendants of those Jews who chose conversion to Catholic Christianity over flight when the Jews were exiled from Spain and Portugal, but at least some of whom retained a deeply engrained sense of their own Jewishness intact enough to pass along to their children and their children’s children as well.

Da Silva’s life story as retold in the book is remarkable in almost every way. His father, a physician harboring a deep, if secret and entirely illicit, devotion to his own Jewishness is eventually discovered and punished so cruelly and so degradingly that it beggars the imagination to consider that his torture—which is certainly not too strong a word to describe his treatment—was undertaken by men who considered themselves not only deeply religious but truly virtuous. But the meat of the novel is the story of how exactly the physician’s son Francisco, who also becomes well-known and highly respected doctor, is made aware of his Jewishness and then finds it in him not to dissemble so as not to be caught, but, at least eventually, to embrace his Jewishness and his Judaism openly and fearlessly. That kind of behavior was not tolerated in Spanish America, and the consequences for Francisco are, at least in some ways, even worse than the physical abuse and public humiliation to which his father was subjected.

The last chapters particularly are seared into my memory. You know what’s coming. You know that there’s no other way for the book to end. You understand that the protagonist, Francisco himself, sees that as clearly as you do. And yet you continue to hope that you’re wrong, that some deus ex machina will descend from the sky and make things right. You know you’re being crazy by hoping for such a thing—and, if you are me, you already know that the auto-da-fé of January 23, 1639, in Lima, Peru, was perhaps the largest mass execution of Jews ever undertaken by the Catholic church, a nightmarish travesty of justice undertaken in the name of religion in which more than eighty “New” Christians were burnt alive at the stake for the crime of having retained some faint vestige of their families’ Jewishness—but you continue to delude yourself into thinking that perhaps the author will take advantage of his novelist’s prerogative to just make up some other ending.  That Francisco is depicted as having the means of escaping his prison cell but instead uses his freedom to visit other prisoners and encourage them to embrace their Jewishness and to accept their fate with pride and courage—that detail alone makes this novel a worthy Elul read.

My readers all know who my personal heroes are. Janusz Korczak, who chose to die at Treblinka rather than to abandon the orphans entrusted to his care. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who returned to wartime Germany to preach against Nazism and eventually to play a role in the plot to assassinate Hitler, for which effort he paid with his life. And now I add Francisco Maldonado da Silva, who chose to die with dignity and pride as a Jew rather than to run off and spend his life masquerading as something he was not and had no wish to be. Could I be like that? Could I live up to my own values in the way these men did? Could I be me the way they were them? I ask these questions not because I wish to answer them in public, but merely to show that they can be asked. They can also be answered, of course. And that is what Elul is for: to challenge us to peer into whatever mirror we choose…and ask if the man or woman we could be is looking back, or just the woman or man we ended up as. That is the searing, anxiety-provoking question the holidays about to dawn lay at our feet. If you’re looking for the courage to formulate your own answer, read Against the Inquisition and I’m guessing you’ll be as inspired to undertake the ḥeshbon ha-nefesh necessary to answer honestly as I was.
