C. Everett Koop
Tumblr media
Physique: Average Build Height: 6’ 1" (1.85 m)
Charles Everett Koop (October 14, 1916 – February 25, 2013) was an American pediatric surgeon and public health administrator who served as the 13th surgeon general of the United States under President Ronald Reagan from 1982 to 1989. According to the Associated Press, "Koop was the only surgeon general to become a household name" due to his frequent public presence around the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s. Koop died on February 25, 2013, at the age of 96.

With his mustacheless beard, deep voice and grim expression, he looked like a Civil War admiral when in his epauleted and ribboned blue or white uniform denoting his leadership of the commissioned corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. I had a thing for the guy back in the day as a kid watching his show called C. Everett Koop, M.D. for some reason. Looking back now, I realize why I love watching him as much as I did.

Koop was married nearly 70 years to his first wife until her death, having 4 children together. Koop is survived by his second wife, three children and eight grandchildren. Koop, called “Chick” (as in “Chicken Koop”) by his friends was by far the best known and most influential person to carry that title.

Genuine question since I would like to know your opinion on this, no hate or anything: I come from a family that has had a long history of problems with birth. One of my relatives needed to get an abortion, the fetus of which the doctors estimated would more than likely be stillborn, else she would die and leave her Husband and kids alone. In this case, would you argue that it would have been best for her to have the abortion? Or would you still say it is a sin? Again, no hate, I'm just curious.
This is a great article that goes into “double effect” with examples that are easy to understand.
That aside, the goal should always be to preserve the life of both baby and mother.
If medical treatment or surgical operation, necessary to save a mother’s life, is applied to her organism (though the child’s death would, or at least might, follow as a regretted but unavoidable consequence), it should not be maintained that the fetal life is thereby directly attacked. - Catholic Encyclopedia
In my thirty-six years of pediatric surgery I have never known of one instance where the child had to be aborted to save the mother’s life. . . . If toward the end of the pregnancy complications arise that threaten the mother’s health, [her obstetrician] will either induce labor or perform a Caesarian section. His intention is to save the life of both the mother and the baby. . . . The baby’s life is never willfully destroyed because the mother’s life is in danger. - Former U.S. surgeon general C. Everett Koop

Caring for older Americans’ teeth and gums is essential, but Medicare generally doesn’t cover that cost
C. Everett Koop, the avuncular doctor with a fluffy white beard who served as the U.S. surgeon general during the Reagan administration, was famous for his work as an innovative pediatric surgeon and the attention he paid to the HIV-AIDS crisis.

THE LAST GOOD REPUBLICAN (ep. 4): C. Everett Koop vs. Abortion
On the final episode of The Last Good Republican, we'll listen as Koop creates the infamous Koop Report in which he steadfastly refused to lie on behalf of the Reagan administration and the pro-life movement. We'll listen to archival footage, contemporary news coverage, and Koop's own words to understand how decided to prioritize the truth over his personal faith.
This episode features an amazing history lesson from cult survivor, religious historian, and host of the Leaving Eden podcast, Sadie Carpenter.

Ryoichi Sasakawa and Reagan
Tumblr media
1982 - Secret memo from Bud McFarland at the White House, October 25, 1982: "I do not believe the President should meet with Mr. Sasakawa, who is a highly controversial figure in Japan. Could you call framer Congressman Fletcher back and simply tell him that the Pre sident's schedule does not allow for a meeting with Mr. Sasakawa."
Tumblr media
This letter was following a request from Kathy Osborne to Judge Clark for a meeting between Sasakawa and Reagan be arranged in late October 1982. You can read more of the exchange here.
1987 - From a Los Angeles Times articles on AIDS research fundraiser in which Reagan spoke, with Sasakawa speaking right after:
Reagan had taken the podium after impassioned speeches had been made by Surgeon General C. Everett Koop and the world’s two leading AIDS researchers, Dr. Robert C. Gallo of the National Cancer Institute and Dr. Luc Montagnier of the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Gallo and Montagnier have feuded over which of them first discovered the virus, but they were gracious to each other during their speeches.
Reagan then spoke and said “fund-raisers always remind me of one of my favorite stories” about a man who was soliciting funds for a charity. The solicitor tells a man, “Our records show you have not given anything to our charity.” And the man asks if the records also show that a member of his family is disabled and another is a widow struggling to support her family.
“No, our records don’t show that,” the embarrassed solicitor admits.
“Well,” the man replies, “I don’t give anything to them. Why should I give anything to you?”
When Reagan got into the serious part of his text, drawing both boos and applause, some guests took the middle road, they acknowledged later. They did not like the sound of routine testing because discrimination might result from it, they explained, but they also were delighted that Reagan had said AIDS sufferers deserve compassion and that unfair treatment of victims “has no place in the home of the brave.”
Asked how he felt about the party, Koop replied, “This is the most significant week in the history of AIDS for this country. The President is coming forward with some flat-footed statements about AIDS and now we can move forward.”
Dr. Mervyn F. Silverman, president of the foundation, said, “I’m very pleased that the President talked about compassion and said the problem is a disease, not people. But I’d like to state again the position of AmFAR is that it supports voluntary, confidential testing accompanied by counseling. Safeguards must be present to prevent discrimination.
‘Issue Is Counseling’
“The whole issue of testing is misguided. The issue is counseling.”
Despite the emotional turmoil of the evening, the guests were treated to several merry moments. After Reagan spoke, Japanese philanthropist Ryoichi Sasakawa, chairman of the Japanese Shipbuilding Industry Foundation, strode to the microphone in a kimono and began giving an animated speech in Japanese.
After several moments, an interpreter explained that he had said, “My name is Ryoichi Sasakawa. I am 88 years old. Since I was a small child I was told by my parents that I was sent to this world as a cleaner of this dirty world.”
Sasakawa went on to explain that he had recently enjoyed a visit in Japan with Taylor and was donating $1 million to the foundation. Sasakawa has contributed many millions to various charities throughout his life and is particularly interested in world health issues, having helped to fund research on smallpox and leprosy.
Taylor thanked Sasakawa, playfully slipping his check down the front of her dress, and added, “This has been an extraordinary month for me. I also met Malcolm Forbes for the third time in my life and he presented me with a check for $1 million.”
Taylor beckoned millionaire publisher Forbes to the podium and held his and Sasakawa’s hands high in the air, like winning boxers
1988 - Chief of Staff to the President to the Chairman of the President’s Intelligence Oversight Board on March 29 on Sasakawa: “ . . . Sasakawa has given large sums of money to charitable causes in recent years, that in Mike’s view this still does not overcome a very unsavory past or his reputed current ties with the Japanese underworld and extreme right wing groups. It is also reported that Sasakawa organized a fascist party that was responsible for political assassinations in the 1930s. In the postwar period he has become heavily involved in motorboat gambling and connections, in some way, with Reverend Moon’s Unification Church.”
