im obsessed with the way they sandwich sydney into carmy and claire’s scenes and it’s kind of similar to the way they’re actually sandwiching scenes of carmy and emmanuel enough to see a pattern.

in the morning before sydney leaves she’s discussing the upcoming night with her dad and his basic sentiment is: don’t be scared if this isn’t what you imagine because I love you I’m proud of you and I’ll be here for you.

under the table, carmy tells sydney that it’ll be okay if no one shows up. they’ll work on the food if it’s shit. *don’t be scared if this isn’t what you imagine because I love you* (you make me better at this, I won’t let you fail).

and it’s especially funny that syd reads those sentiments a little differently. it’s two people trying to quell her anxiety by assuring her that she will not, will never, be alone and when her dad says it in her ears it’s like he doesn’t believe this can be a thing. like her dad is already emotionally preparing her for the worst. and in some ways, that may be what he’s doing without meaning to, but mostly he wants her to know he’s gonna be there for her. hearing it from carmy it’s a little different because she knows she won’t be knee deep in whatever mess it may be alone. he will be there right next to her. and carmy is *still* saying that it’ll be okay, even if they both know it probably fucking won’t be because that’s how much he wants her to go into this night believing in herself because she deserves to.

carmy and her dad are both reassuring syd that they’ll be there for her no matter what in places that are coming from worry and love and in carmy’s case an actual belief that it will be okay simply because he’s met her so it’s already okay and better than anything ever was before she walked into his life

*cue panic attack scene right after sydney talks to her dad*
